One is hunting a third BCS title; the other isn't bowl-eligible. (AJC photo by Brant Sanderlin)
Jacksonville — The game was a total loss, but the lesson imparted need not be. After yet another lost Saturday in Duval County, this much is beyond dispute: Georgia is no longer a major player in its division, let alone the nation.
Mark Richt began his somber media briefing by saying, “Well, here we are again.” And there they were, lopsided losers. It was 49-10 last season and 41-17 this time, and for all the good work Richt did in the early part of this decade, he and his program have been lapped by Urban Meyer. And Richt, once so clever and driven, seems to have run out of ideas.
He tried the color-scheme gimmick Saturday, presenting his players with black helmets after they’d warmed up in the usual red headgear. The upshot of this was to make Georgia look like an Arena league team and to cow the nation’s No. 1 team not one whit. After 11 1/2 minutes, the guys in the orange hats led the guys in the black hats 14-0.
“It’s not the helmet,” safety Reshad Jones said. “It’s what inside the helmet.”
Well, yes. With an extra week to prepare, Willie Martinez seemed even more witless than usual. As bad as the Gators’ first two touchdowns were, the third was an affront to everything Red and Black. Facing third-and-3 at the Georgia 23 with 1:32 left in the half, Florida ran a simple option. Tim Tebow faked a handoff and burst up the middle. He scored the touchdown that put him ahead of the hallowed Herschel Walker without being touched.
“They’re a good team,” said defensive end Justin Houston. “But it seemed like every time we made a bad play, they capitalized on it.”
In the first half Georgia had eight penalties. In the second it had four interceptions. If it was to have any chance against the Gators, it had to play a clean game. Instead it authored another in a series of messes.
If we’re to believe recruiting rankings, the gulf between Georgia and Florida shouldn’t be so pronounced. But Saturday was another installment of men against boys, and it called to mind the barb Steve Spurrier sunk into Ray Goff in this stadium 18 years ago: “Georgia gets all these players — I don’t know what happens to them.”
Players go to Florida and get, to invoke another Spurrier-ism, coached up. Players come to Georgia and are left to their own devices. Martinez is a substandard defensive coordinator, and no other position coach can be said to have done fabulous work. (Unless you count Kevin Butler, who isn’t a coach but who did sire the prodigious punter Drew Butler.)
Said Richt: “We’re 4-4 this season. I don’t think it’s an indictment of the program. I think it’s an indictment of where we are this year.”
Except Georgia has underachieved three times in the past four seasons, and as Richt himself noted Saturday: “There’s no guarantee of a bowl. The question is, will we play a game when we don’t do something that hinders us from being the best we can be?”
The Bulldogs have never lost more than four games under Richt, but they’ve never been 4-4 under this coach, either. Regarding possible changes, he said: “It’s not good to make decisions within minutes of an emotional game. You’ve got to settle your mind and settle your spirit, and then see where you are.”
As darkness fell on Halloween 2009, Georgia was again where it has been too often. The program that has all the resources was left to wonder why it has fallen so far behind Florida. And the ugly truth has never been more apparent: Florida might or might not have better players, but it absolutely has better coaches.

I cant beleive things had to get to this point for richt to say he needs to do something about penalties and turnovers. A couple of weeks ago he made some dumb excuse about why the penalties were OK. This program is in serious trouble – - any wonder Stafford and Moreno got the hell out of there? – - AJ will be next to jump ship I would too if I were him

Someone probably has already mentioned this but I’m not going to read through 700 blog entries to see. We should hire Jim Grobe away from Wake Forest before someone else grabs him.
By the way Mark Bradley — thanks for stating the obvious, you’re a real football genius. The dog fans have been way ahead of you. Knowledgeable fans have wanted Martinez gone for a couple of years now. Everyone is tired of the way Georgia is losing — penalties, turnovers, bad play calling, bad special teams, and lack of motivation and discipline (which all goes back to bad coaching). Everyone knows it’s time for a change — all good things run their course (just like Fulmer and the rest of them). Richt’s two terms are up — it’s time for change — we want to be competitive on the field.

Points scored by Richt’s offense vs the four major teams-SC,UT,UF,AU- that UGA plays every year and that know the FSU Guru’s offense.
17-6-17-9-10-13-18-13-13-20-14-17-10-18-14-12-14-14-10-19 17= 66% of the time scores 20 or less

Im tired of CMRS antics and lame excuses. Last year he said that the whole coaching staff were taking a new approach and would get better. Well what the F happened? We have stooped to coddling players and taking them swimming and bowling instead of making them run the damn bleachers. This team and program is a slight notch above SC and Vandy. Pathetic.

Both evans and richt are clueless. UGA is a third rate program due to all these bad decisions. Adams needs to get rid of both of these morons and bring in people who know what they are doing. 3 passes.
We threw 3 passes to AJ Green.
We tried a 4th pass, out of 70 plays, but it was into quad coverage. 4 Florida players man on man against AJ Green on the play. A 5th who jumped up trying to disrupt the pass in flight before it got to him and a 6th who was just to the left of that defender. And, we threw the ball to him anyway.
Nice play call their Coach Richt, who has MADE HIS CALLING in THIS WORLD as play caller, offensive coordinator and Quarterbacks’ Coach.
Only had 4 punts.
That is an improvement.
We are like a Vandy now, where our best player is visibly our DAMN PUNTER.
Only had 4 punts, because we never had the ball because we lead the nation in penalties playing BAD BOYS and therefore cannot sustain a drive, and because we lead the nation in turnovers and don’t have to punt when you turn the football over every series on offense.
But, of course, it is just Willie Martinez who has to go.

Richt obviously needs to make some changes but I honestly believe that he can and will turn this thing around at Georgia. As I noted in another post, it’s become increasingly obvious that he was the primary reason for all of those national championships at Florida State. Maybe his loyalty to his assistants is a problem at this point and changes need to be forced. Keep in mind, however, that Tampa Bay fired Tony Dungy for the same reason and he went on to have huge success at Indianapolis. TB hired a coach who won the whole thing with Dungy’s players but then took a nose dive and is now in the broadcast booth. In the end, integrity and character matters and Richt has both in spades.

NOT A CARE IN THE WORLD.
Take your furlough day off and your “coaching staff” and then go watch Division III football games out of state, instead of figuring it out how you have a LOSING RECORD against top teams and a LOSING RECORD against 2 teams from The SEC East and The SEC West in your 8 years and 8 weeks here in the Coach Richt Era of WORTHLESS “coaching staff.”
4 of 12 on 3rd down conversions by the offensive offense. On 3rd and long the announcers are left saying, the reason why UGA is calling a running play (WITHOUT A RUNNING BACK) is that they are AFRAID to ask their 4 Top 10 Quarterbacks in the nation to throw the ball downfield.
Yank Joe Cox whom Coach Richt has repeatedly said is HIS QUARTERBACK. Really Coach Richt, have you coached him yourself 1 damn minute in his 5 years here ? Doesn’t look like it.
Put in another Top 10 Quarterback, also not coached, and he throws the football 3 yards from his end zone to the best player on Florida’s defense. Not a receiver for UGA in the picture.
Nice.
At least we can put to rest that the NEXT COACHING STAFF at my alma mater can move along to Aaron Murray and forget this crap that we have coached and brought along Logan Gray with his 1 play for 3 games experience, all running plays.
At least we got Logan Gray in there to find that out.
Now.
Aaron Murray will play here what ?
2 years like Knowshon Moreno.
Logan Gray zero for 3 on passes, with a PICK 6 interception and a SACK.
Great coaching to finally let him play in a game, Coach Richt.

Has to be the players, Coach Richt says after the game. Going to change all the players.
Study each player, position by position.
Figure out which players to sit on the bench.
Nope. I am NOT going to discuss ANY possible changes on the staff.
Can’t do that 5 minutes after a 4 touchdown blow-out.

Quote from Cox in the paper referring to the black helmets, “Maybe every now and then you need some change to bring excitement and we needed excitement.” You need a gimmick to get excited about playing the number one team in the country and the team that has owned you for the last 20 years? That is precisely what is wrong with this program right now.

He is over there on the sidelines yelling at the officials.
Oh, their player poked the eyes of our rookie running back we ripped the redshirt off after 3 quarters of 6 games was complete.
Oh, the officials suck.
Oh, wait until next year Coach Richt will win the national championship with these young players we have on this young team with 32 scholarship seniors and juniors we have this 2009 season.
32.
Oh we have had great success here at UGA, getting to play 5-Loss Flawed State in 2002 ending up Number 3 in the nation and getting to play equally hapless Hawaii in 2007 ending up Number 2 in the nation. Ain’t we great. Ain’t we the envy of college football with those on Coach Richt’s resume.

Why did Richt not hire an offensive coordinator when he came to Georgia? He only turned it over to Bozo because the heat was on him. And who could trust his judgement after Willie, Bozo, the Celebration, the Fashion Shows, and the infamous Jasper Sanks Call.
The Call: Auburn 2001. Trailing by a 7 and with a first-and-goal at the 1, host Georgia had time for at least two and most likely three passing attempts. But Richt decided to run Jasper Sanks. He was stuffed for no gain and time ran out on Georgia.

I have have maintained that Richt will get it done and that the problem does NOT lie with the HC. I no longer believe that and I do think the most serious problems lie with Richt. Yes the Martinez should be coaching a middle school squad somewhere. Bobo is inconsistant at best and is over his head too. But let’s look at the big picture here…who alllows the players to dance like idiots ON THE FIELD DURING GAMES…who allows the players to celebrate in the endzone/on the Vandy logo/on the sideline beacuse you scored a TD instead of acting like you have been there before…who allows the ridiculous penalties, especially the PF’s, to NOT result in benching…who allows these silly color scheme gimmicks to get your team ready to play especially when you are 4-3…who would have thought UGA would have to admit that UF plays with more class. Finally the statements he makes after these games are really unbelievable. I don’t think it is necessary to name names but for godness sake say we played horrible, we played undiscaplined, we got whipped on the field, and we got whipped in the coaching booth. Everyone else already knows these things but at least we will know that you get it too. Richt is an honorable man but he has lost control of this program and I am no longer convinced he can turn it around. Let me be clear, Richt gets paid big $ to win games but he more importantly he gets paid to run a program everyone can be proud of and represent the university with class and honor…to that end this program has been an absolute embarassment for several years.

Paying Top Dollar for our “coaching staff” and having no clue who even to play or not play, who to redshirt or not redshirt.
Can’t see we cannot sack a QB for years from Defensive End, which is why we didn’t recruit any DE for this season after no sacks last year.
Knew Knowshon Moreno going to the 7th pick of the 1st round of the NFL draft. No effort to go get a RB for this year.
Great Fullbacks. Refuse to hand them the football to run with.
Clueless.

For crying out loud Mark Bradley, fact is Mark Richt has been one of the most successful coaches in America since coming to UGA. Mark Richt is proven..his record of ten win seasons, bowl victories, top ten finishes and SEC titles speak for themselves. I don’t want to hear about National titles either. Until there is a playoff and all subjectivity (ie ESPN and all the bias journalism majors like you) are taken out of the equation, national titles are bogus. Even Tim Tebow after losing to UGA just two years ago said Georgia was the best team he faced all year and oh yes, that included BCS National Champion LSU. Mark Richt doesn’t need affirmation from you or anyone else. He has earned his reputation and when I read articles like this you are earning yours. To say the Florida program is that far ahead of UGA is I believe, premature.
Congratulations to the Florida Nation. As a 50 year old Georgia fan I have been blessed to watch two of the greatest college football players in history compete in this, the greatest college game in America. Players like Herschel Walker and Tim Tebow and Coaches like Vince Dooley and Steve Spurier are what have made this game so special.
To all you opposing fans you should only hope Mark Richt gets fired. My only hope is that potential recruits have the common sense to differentiate between the true Georgia fans all these imposters.

Richt is responsible for cheap shot penalties the players have been making over the past few years. He could have stopped them by benching the player for the game. The face mask grab of the out of bounds Florida player is an example. Georgia does not need that type of player.
The team on both sides are undisciplined, have poor fundamentals, and in general poorly coached. The slide started when we lost Van Gorder. Martinez may be a good coach but he is no coordinator.Anyone who has ever played or knows the game of football know defense wins them. Vince Dooley and Bear Bryant both knew that.

There are changes that need to be made. No doubt. However, we UGA fans are the most fickle group of people on the planet. If you could back out and read the crap on this blog from the perspective of someone not UGA you should be embarrassed.
We suck more than the coaches. CMR is a good coach. The reason you all do not get considered is that you don’t know what the hell you are talking about fans. So, make intelligent comments and quit calling for CMR to be fired.
Do we need change at DC? Yes. OC? Maybe. Head coach? No.
The reason we were great the first part of CMR’s time is BVG and the defense. We need the same fire and discipline in a DC. Kirby Smart? I’d offer him some bucks to come be DC.
OC is hard. We lost a ton of fire power last year. Mike Bobo is still learning, and hey, we put up some points on Florida. Take away the interceptions, and this game is close even with marginal defense.
So, don’t panic. On Friday nights we don’t go for it on every 4th down because that is stupid. You don’t hair pin decision make in football, especially at this level.
Changes are needed, but we need to stop acting like a bunch of uneducated bums that do not know anything about football. Most of you never played and would not know the difference between a cover 2 or 3 or the difference between a blitz and a stunt. So relax. Be passionate, but don’t be stupid and foolish.

“As the athletic director, your job is to provide the best opportunity and atmosphere to win,” Stokan wrote in the letter to Evans, a copy of which was obtained by the AJC under the state’s Open Records Act. “Take a poll of your coach and the 72 players from the state of Georgia and see how many would rather play their arch-rival in their own backyard of Georgia in a facility called the Georgia Dome.”
A week later, Evans recommended to the UGA Athletic Association’s board that the game remain in Jacksonville for six years beyond the end of the current contract in 2010. UGA President Michael Adams endorsed the recommendation. The board unanimously agreed.
