UGA fans, what’s an acceptable result in Jacksonville?

Is it possible to lose to the hated Gators and still feel good? (AJC photo by Pouya Dianat)

Georgia heads to Jacksonville unranked, which it almost never is, and a two-touchdown underdog, which it never is. It will be met by a team that hasn’t lost since September 2008, a team tracking a second consecutive BCS title. (Know how many schools have won consecutive BCS titles? None.)

Put simply, Georgia is up against it in a way unaccustomed to Georgia teams under Mark Richt. It lost to Florida 49-10 a year ago in what seemed a coin-flip game going in. This one is no coin flip. This outcome seems foregone.

But hope springs eternal in the breast of every fan, and on the day before Halloween I want to ask Dawg fans this question: What would you deem an acceptable outcome Saturday?

A narrow and honorable loss? (Within a touchdown, say.) Or is actual victory the only satisfactory result? And here’s a twist: If beating Florida convinces Mark Richt he doesn’t need to make changes within his program, would you rather Georgia lose? Or would beating the Gators when they’re ranked No. 1 be worth another year of Willie Martinez?

I’d put up a poll, but I don’t think the parameters of a poll are broad enough. I’m interested in your thoughts. So rather that click on “yes” or “no,” I invite you denizens of Bulldog Nation to avail yourselves of the white comment box below. And I thank you in advance. And you’ll hear from me again Saturday afternoon from you-know-where.

How about making the officials stay away from the stadium. Start punishing them the same way the coaches will be punished for complaining about their stupid game changing calls.

Agreed 74 Dawg, it sets dangerous precedent to quell warranted critism of SEC officials. It allows the orchestrators unchecked control to continue “annointing” the SEC’s participant in the BCS process.

TheAntiMe,

Since the turn of the century, with the exception of one year, it’s always been the “chronically underachieving Bulldogs”. Both on the field, in the class room and all the way through life! It’s a substandard university and athletic program (except gymnastics and equestrian) and everyone outside of the 98,000 member dog nation knows it. It’s comical.

The bottom line is Georgia”s D doesn’t create turnovers. No turnovers + offensive turnovers to a good team = big loss. I hate to say but the dogs probably get whooped in this one, Urban is none to happy about the way his team has played in the last few weeks and who better to take it out on? We need some new blood in the staff thats for sure my question is how long do we stick with CMR? I think he’s a great coach but this team hasn’t looked like a well coached football team in some time. I hope for an enjoyable close game so I don’t have to hear my buddy talkin trash all day because I can’t say anything!

The Dogs lose because, once a team gets into another team’s head, it’s hard to get it out. and clearly, the Gators are in the heads of the Bulldogs and their fans. Many UGA fans are now like UF fans were in the 1970s and ’80s, when UGA was 18-5-1 against the Gators. They come to Jacksonville every year expecting to lose. And Richt is asked by the boosters every year, “When are you going to beat Florida?” It’s an imposing mental hurdle to get over. And the longer the domination goes on in the rivalry, the larger the albatross grows, the more the pressure increases. But, all things come to an end and one day the Dogs will be back on top.

If GA winning means keeping Martinez around, I SAY I HOPE WE LOSE BY 50! But I have a feeling that if GA wins, then Richt would use this to keep OLD GARBAGE MARTINEZ AROUND! I wonder if Richt would have enough sence to not use 1 big win to keep him around, BUT RICHT SURE LOVES THIS GARBAGE! GO DAWGS!

Mark Bradley said “I said it in a comment after an earlier post: I believe this will either be 48-7 or 24-20. But either way I think Florida wins. I just don’t think Georgia is good enough this time.”

The 48-7 guess will be pretty close. And I hope that will be the end of Mark Richt, and the Dawgs can be competitive once again with a real coach. Dawg fans are crying out in the wilderness, and we’re looking for a modern-day Moses to lead us to the Promised Land.

Mark, good question. As much I want the Dawgs to win, as much as I hate the Gators, if losing causes Richt to make coaching changes then lets take this one on the chin. For the GA football program to improve, coaching changes are necessary. Its either the players or the coaches, lets start with the coaches, didnt they pick the players anyway? This season is a bust. Lose the game, make the coaching changes. The best option would be to win the game and still make the coaching changes.

Mabel, Mark Richt certainly isn’t our Moses! The only place he’s leading the Dawgs to is mediocrity.

Yes, 48-7 sounds pretty realistic, but is it lopsided enough to get Richt sacked, that’s the question.

It sounds like bugsquacher has some pretty serious self-esteem issues to work out, bless his heart. I understand that he’s extremely frustrated over the crappy season the Dawgs are having, so he lashes out at Georgia Tech, which is not involved in this. The poor thing, I hope he gets help with his problem. :-)

I think the score will be closer than most people think, but the Gators will still win by 24 points.

Well now.

I see that it took Bugkiller — the same guy who claims he’s “Mr. Anti-Repetitive-Broken-Record” – 20 minutes (equates to 13.7 seconds in internet blog time) to weigh in with his usual repetitive, broken-record “Fire-Willie” diatribe.

Look, I’m not defending Willie, but why does Bugkiller call out other bloggers for doing exactly the same thing he does, day after day, week after week, season after season?

I’ll pull like hell as always for my Dawgs, but i’m not sure if it’ll help. Big Willie’s defense has made every SEC quarterback look like a Heisman candidate this year.. GARCIA, CROMPTON, MALLET, and even that worthless LSU qb. So, i’m not sure how we’ll do against Tebag and the rest of his gaytor buddies.

GA Gator. Stats don’t always tell the story. Tebow could have a high percentage without throwing all that much, nor for TD’s. As an NFL quarterback I don’t think that Tebow compares to the likes of a Peyton Manning.

No moral victories tomorrow, so get out of that thinking mode. Moral victories are for losers, which UGA has become, just another doormat one slight step above Vanderbilt.

Florida 42, Georgia 17.

Another humiliating loss. When will it end?

From a UGA graduate and fan of over forty years–I’m for whatever it takes for coaching changes and mostly getting rid of Martinez. Martinez has to go. It is like a fan told Coach Donnan when he had his horse hitched to Quincy Carter that Carter was going to ride him out of town. Martinez WILL cause Richt to go if Richt does not unhitch his horse.

Willie Martinez needs to go even if we win the game. Even, Urban Meyer said we have talent. We need to win! A loss still makes us 4-4 which is unacceptable. There are no moral victories at UGA. Willie must go! I’m tired of this BS! We have lowered our standards!

As I understand the situation, giving a good effort without all those dumb penalties would be acceptable. However, that is not going to happen.

What is unacceptable is telling a 5′7″ 165 pound recruit that Willie will be back next year! In fact telling any recruit that Willie will be back next year is unacceptable. Willie coming back next year is unacceptable.

How many points does Florida have to score for CMR to decide that Willie coming back is unacceptable? How many points does Tech need to score without throwing a pass before CMR gets it? Bottom line: Both those teams scoring that many points (ever how many that may be) is acceptable.

I’ve been a Georgia fan since the 1960’s. I was a season ticket holder until I moved out-of-state. I am not attending any games or watching on TV until Willie is gone. It is just too painful.
