Bradley’s Buzz: ESPN thinks UGA can (almost) beat Florida

When last I doubted the wisdom of ESPN’s Insiders and its Scouts Inc. brand of predicting, the Worldwide Leader was right and I was wrong. I thought Georgia Tech would beat Miami. Scouts Inc. picked the ‘Canes. Score it Scouts Inc. 1, MB nil.

So I pass this along for purposes of edification. Scouts Inc. gives Florida the edge over Georgia in seven of nine categories. (Link requires registration.) The Bulldogs are preferred at wide receiver and linebacker, you should know. Me, I’d have made it eight of nine, but I’m a famous Gator fan

Regarding Georgia’s offense, such as it is, against Florida’s top-ranked defense:

“Look for Georgia to attack the middle of the Florida run defense. True freshman RB Washaun Ealey and 222-pound backup Richard Samuel are both tough between-the-tackles runners who can lower their shoulders and pick up yards after contact. In addition, FB Fred Munzenmeir is an effective lead blocker who has done a nice job filling in for the injured Shaun Chapas. On the flip side, Gators MLB Brandon Spikes is questionable with a groin injury that forced him to miss the Mississippi State game, and Florida’s interior defensive line is banged-up.”

Regarding the men of Matinez versus the minions of Meyer:

“Florida will likely continue to have problems running QB Tim Tebow inside in short-yardage and red zone situations. Tebow is a north-south power runner who needs a seam to be truly effective, and Florida’s interior offensive line is allowing too much penetration. Georgia DT Geno Atkins is at his best using his above-average initial quickness and upper-body strength to shoot gaps and disrupt plays in the backfield. He is surrounded by a strong supporting cast as well, with the 315-pound Kade Weston getting good push up the middle and the active Jeff Owens holding his own at the point of attack.”

By now, you’re doubtless wondering if Scouts Inc. has been watching the same Bulldogs you have. And you’re also wondering: Does Scouts Inc. really think Georgia will win? The answer:

“Outside of the Kentucky game, Florida’s offense has sputtered during SEC play. Look for that trend to continue to a certain degree this week. Georgia’s pass defense has been one of the most porous in the country, but Tebow lacks the weapons at wide receiver to take advantage, and the Bulldogs have had a bye week to prepare for him. As far as the running game is concerned, the Bulldogs are capable of controlling the middle of the line of scrimmage and they have the athletes at linebacker to contain the speedy Gators running backs. However, Georgia’s offense will have an even tougher time putting points on the board working against the Gators’ stifling defense, and that will be the difference in the game.”

The projected score, according to Scouts Inc.: Florida 24, Georgia 16. Given that the spread is 15 points, I’m thinking that’s virtually a Dog victory. But what the heck do I know?

Hey! There’s no need to answer all at once.

does being 2nd get any points? As a fan, you hope all of that potential will surface at some point but I don’t see it. This is the same team that did not even get into the red zone against UT and UF’s D is better. My heart says UGA in a nail biter. My wallet says UF 34-10.

These people at ESPN are nuts. GA’s defensive line has had one good game all year and ESPN is talking like they are all-americans. Fla 34, GA 10 – Take FL and give the points.

EA SPORTS also had a simulated game that had Florida winning 31-24 (ahead 31-14 with some late UGA scoring). Georgia won’t score 24 on this Florida defense, not with the injured guys back. The biggest concern is whether Georgia can slow Florida’s offense. I think not because the same guy is coordinating the defense that already gave up 45 to Tennessee, 41 to Arkansas, 37 to South Carolina, 49 to Florida last season, 45 to Tech last season, 41 to Alabama last season, etc., etc. Notice a trend when matched up with good teams?!

College Football News has FLA 38 UGA 10. I think that is the more likely score. You can give 1/4 Willie a year to prepare and I won’t matter. Remember we were off the week before last year’s Tech game – that helped a bunch didn’t it.

I’m thinking this game will be low scoring but all in all the entire SEC has been below average this year. There is a serious lack of Qb’s in the conference. Aaron Murray may be the third best quarterback in the SEC. And pass along to the advertising department that an ad with a “2″ in a little black dress (a.k.a. a “10″ in New Jersey) will not make me want to go to Atlantic City.

Our only chance is to pressure Tebow and hope for the ball to bounce our way and get a couple timely turnovers. Fla’s D will make us work too hard to sustain a drive down the field. We also will have to hope for good play on special teams to set up field position (read: Logan Gray should not be in to fair catch punts, can’t someone who actually returns them make the decision to fair catch or run?)

I’d like to say it will be a low scoring game given the lackluster offense both sides have shown coupled with the Florida D. The wildcard is the UGA D. If they show up we have a chance to win a close game, if they decide to play a soft zone and not force the issue we’re done.

UF has played just average in the last three games so they will probably have a breakout game against UGA. Hopefully the UGA players don’t read these comments or they will vote to forget the trip to Jax. I wnat the Dawgs to win outright but I don’t thnik that will happen.. From a financial perspective, the spread is just not tempting enough at 15.5.

For those who think Georgia’s problems on defense are lack of talent: “I’m flipping on Georgia (on tape), and statistically, I know everybody is like, ‘What about this and what about that?’ ” Urban Meyer said. “All I know is what I see, and that’s as good a defensive personnel as there is in college football.” From ESPN…

I just do not see a complete turnaround as much as it pains me. We still can not hit the QB with any pressure and we do not play disciplined enough Defense yet. Why do we think we will all of a sudden run the ball? Our only hope is another wide open “Throw it to 8″ like we saw against Arizona..and I haven’t even mentioned the stupid penalties and turnovers…I think the bye will help keep is in the game for a 1/2, but after that…and I predict that upon losing we will in fact see Murray….I am a huge positive UGA Fan, but I can’t see us out of this one. Here’s the thing that people who defend Willie Martinez STILL don’t want to acknowledge.

Jonathan Crompton.

Stephen Garcia.

Ryan Mallet.

Tim Tebow.

John Parker Wilson.

Erik Ainge.

Pat White.

All of these QBs had CAREER games against Willie Martinez.

Pat White would go on to have even better games, but has Tebow had much better than last year’s WLOCP?

But here’s the REAL rub.

Willie Martinez turned Erik Ainge and John Parker Wilson into NFL DRAFT PICKS!!!

And it’s a 50-50 bet that he’s done it again for Jon Crompton.

Two absolutely HORRIBLE quarterbacks, Garcia and Crompton, have CAREER games against your defensive coordinator.

Two mediocre QBs, Ainge and Wilson, do the same.

And STILL, people feel the need to defend Willie Martinez. Or defend Mark Richt for putting his personal friendship with this pathetic excuse for a football coach above what’s best for the team.

Florida, just like Tennessee, is going to find the cure for what ails their offense in the Georgia defense.

Tebow is gonna get back on track, and he’ll look like a million bucks picking apart Soft Willie’s soft zones.

I can just hear Urban Meyer right now: “I got… a fevuh… and the only… prescription… is Willie… MARTINEZ!”

I have yet to see anyone defending Willie!! Dirty Dawg(non UGA fan, don’t respond and say you are the “biggest UGA fan of all”)…Firing CMR is NOT the answer. The other 2, you might be onto something. I just laugh when all of you football coaches (that don’t have a football job) say do this, do that! You have no clue as to what CMR is doing or saying in practice or in the games. Losing control during a game on the sidelines is NOT the way to make your team play better. The head coach has to stay in control. Now if an assistant or two wants to “snap” on someone, go for it. Until you are on the practice field, in the locker room, etc… you have NO IDEA what is being said and what is being done. Also, why waste a year on Murray now. He will be special, but at 4-3, I think it’s a waste to waste the year now! Hope we win Sat., but it will be more than tough to do it!! We will have to win a low scoring game. We won’t score much against that UF defense. That sux too! Go Dawgs!

Scouts Inc.’s assessment is pretty much exactly my own. The really decisive element, I believe, is Florida’s lights out defense. But unless we self destruct with turnovers and special teams mistakes (or the exact wrong defensive game plan), this one should be close enough that, if a handful of emerging players play their best and some good things happen (like Miss State’s TWO pick 6s), we just might sneak away with a miracle win.

Yeah, don’t bank on it, but it IS possible. Richt has righted the ship midseason before. We’ve got the talent to make this one competitive, the pieces just need to fall into place.

three/four national championships for Timmy and the seniors.
and next year you can have plenty of fun beating up on our mediocre team, but right now youve gotta admit urban has created one hell of a program and you can’t say you wouldnt be gloating if these things were true of your football team.

I’ve been a Ga fan for 30 years and we need to pull for the dawgs in this tough year. I really think Ga can get it done if all the players will buckle down and beat some gator ass. Go Dawgs

Damn, with THAT D-line how the hell can we be so bad on D. Weston, Owens and Atkins those guys are/were big time players. If they get after it this Saturday we should at least hang. I can’t believe that ESPN didn’t see any of the Tennessee game film before posting that we had almost a chance. We made Crompton look like a Heisman contender. Big game from Wooten. UGA freshman recievers roll on. Charles is tough over the middle, and Gators can’t cover all of the recievers. They will concentrate on Green. Watch for a run and shoot type spread. It will be what will work against that D.

I’m going out on a limb and predicting a 27-21 UGA victory. It will be the result of UGA running the ball 82% of the time, and using AJ Green as a decoy to complete passes to King, Charles, and White. Also, Willie has been read the riot act and will actually not run his 4 quarter prevent defense. I guarantee this win, and you can call me at 800-555-1212 to congratulate or belittle me. Peace.

We are going to win this game. It’s a rivalry game a 1-6 team could beat a 7-0 squad.Fla’s OL has been barely more effective than ours and I look for Weston,Owens and Atkins to have big games. For all the FLA is so superior than UGA talk…bottom line is a win sat and the series is tied at 3-3.Our kids have beaten FLA before so they are not intimated as some of our so called fans seem to be.

Here is a completely believable scenerio that leads to a DAWG win..
1. Fla wins toss and defers… UGA runs back kickoff for TD
2. On first possession Tebow throws a pick six to Branden Smith
3. On second possession UGA holds and Fla punts.. Uga returns punt for TD. By this time the crowd is wild and Dawgs confidence is soring
4. On third possession Tebow fumbles.. Dawgs kick field goal
5. On fourth possession Gators regain composure and score 7
6. Dawgs drive for another field goal
7. 27 to 7 Dawgs at halftime
Johnny, wake up… it is time to go to work…

I too think Ga will beat Fla AND with their running game. Cox only has to throw 8-10 yards just to keep Fla honest. Fla’s defensive line is beat up. Ga’s two running should get 3-4 yards a carry instead of 1-2. Throw to Green short and let him do his thing. I’m picking Ga. 20 Fla. 17. I think Ga’s defense AND offense will play much better being off a week before the game. They have had lots of time to study up on what to do, now all they have to do is execute. I’m a Tech fan and remember Miami having 12 days to get ready, where GT only had 4 or 5.

UGA will lose big time. Probably be 3TDs at the least.

This game isn’t going to make or break the Boobo’s or Martinez’ career. It hasn’t yet and it won’t Saturday. But if they lose to AU or KY or GT on top of the FL game, then yes the Uhauls will be backing up to their million dollar houses.

Lose to UF, and then miraculously beat AU, KY, and GT, then all coaches will get raises and extensions.

Losing to FL seems to be an acceptable way of life to Adams and Evans. And to most of the dawg fans as well. Sure, you guys complain about the loss, but you have more excuses for the loss to cover up Bobo and Martinez ineptness, than, well, Bobo and Martinez even do. So prepare yourself for another FL whipping and dust off your excuse list and start practicing what you’re going to say. Remember, it’s always good to have “9 or 10 wins” because “we’re rebuilding” or “some of them have the flu” or “they’re just young”.

georgia loses, but not like you think…after scoring a late touchdown to go ahead, georgia’s team and band and mascot and fans and player’s parents rush the field. after 33 penalties are assessed, the bulldogs kick off from the parking lot. florida calls for a fair catch in the bulldog’s end zone for the go ahead TD. after they incur zero penalties, they recover an onside kick and call 2 time outs and use another when they challenge the spot of the ball after they take a knee. after the game, both teams talk about how disrespected they feel. georgia’s players act out by driving terribly and getting arrested while florida’s players cry to meyer and he cries at a press conference where, for once, florida is flagged with a personal foul for being the whiniest number 1 team in history.

Still don’t think Cox should have played this year after seeing him in the spring game, but you will see an improved QB come Saturday w/ Bobo talking to him all game…every-time something went wrong (ints, fumbles, etc.) you could see an obviously flustered QB with that panicked stricken, wide eyed fear of failure in his eyes…I’m sure “the pressure” he felt as a 5th year player/leader “who gives us the best chance at winning”, put more demand on him than his skills/ability could deliver…Bobo should have been there on the sideline all along “trying to steady the ship”…I’m sure the team would look at his facial expression(s) in the huddle/sidelines and think “Oh Sh*t” this guy is scared out of his skin…this is not the leadership required ON THE FIELD…on the other hand, Cox is a great practice player and probably is a good team leader away from game situations…a QB can’t appear to be flustered, the team looks to them for the answers…like I stated earlier, w/ Bobo standing beside him, I think you’ll see a much more compossed Cox and the confidence will transform over to the entire team…it might make the difference in a W and a L this weekend…if Bobo’s presence doesn’t help, then this should be Cox’s last start…

Defensive Line has been a major dissapointment this year. Apparently Geno Atkins was taken out of the starting lineup for 4 or 5 games and nobody noticed. He wasn’t any more a factor when he started than when he was on the bench. Kade Weston has finally made a few plays this year but he’s a senior as well. Why did it take this long? Rashad Jones has to be one of the biggest bust recruits we have every had. He has had a personal foul for every big hit he has ever made and his coverage skills are non-existant. UGA D is a nightmare of blown coverages, stupid penalties and missed tackles.

Jared

Fact is it is going to take a lot more than just a UGA win over the Gators this week to help my Jackets out a lot. The ACC Championship and the Orange Bowl are ours to take. We just need to win. That’s a nice play to be… with your destiny in your own hands.

So many teams would have to lose, and possibly lose twice (I think even if UF loses this week they’d still be ranked higher than GT) for us to get into the MNC game… that’s why you won’t see a ton of GT fans pulling for UGA. Now, if that was ALL that had to happen, then you’d have a different story.

Jared is on the money. Tech has virtually zero chance of moving up enough in the BCS to play for the championship. So that makes it real easy for me to pull for the Gators to humiliate Richt and the Dawgs..

Gators 51, Dawgs 6

The Dawgs could probably keep the score a little closer if their coaches get the flu and aren’t at the game. :-)
