Good times! Rookie Jeff Teague exults after his first pro hoop. (AJC photo by Jason Getz)
There was something old (Joe Smith, who’s 34), something new (Jeff Teague, who’s a rookie), something borrowed (Jamal Crawford, acquired from Golden State) and something blue (the Hawks’ pregame warmup shorts). There was a brand new bench, which did its part, and better balance among the starters. And at the end there was …
Joe Johnson.
He deferred to Josh Smith and Al Horford for a half, and then the Hawks’ best player reminded us that, even though this team has more good players than at any time in two decades, he’s still the Hawks’ best player. And if that’s the new method — let others get involved early and let JJ save it for later — it just might work.
The Hawks weren’t smashing in their opener. They yielded 65 points to tepid Indiana in a half — is Willie Martinez coaching basketball? — and trailed in the fourth quarter. They held — wrong word, I know — Danny Granger to 31 points. But they won pulling away, and en route they dropped powerful hints that this might well be the best Hawks team in … oh, two decades.
Something old: Johnson scoring 17 second-half points. Something new: Horford taking 17 shots. Something borrowed (from John Stockton): Josh Smith making eight assists and five steals and scoring 18 points on only 10 shots. Something blue (presumably): Jason Collins, a veteran big man who signed as a free agent but who went unused.
Before the game, Mike Woodson had been asked about the strange new feeling of having 11 real players at his disposal. Said the coach: “You can’t find 30 minutes a night for 11 or 12 guys.” Also this: “I will not sacrifice games just to satisfy someone.”
Which is why we saw the Hawks’ bench work long minutes in the second and third quarters but only a total of five in the fourth. “I kind of jumped my bench for losing the lead,” Woodson said. Then: “We’re all trying to get used to each other, especially them to me.”
Something new: Johnson having a tepid half and the Hawks still being in position to seize the game. Something old: Johnson seizing the game. He had 10 points and four assists in the fourth quarter, and two of those assists resulted in Mike Bibby treys. Which meant JJ had a hand in 20 of the Hawks’ 25 final points.
“I kind of wanted to get into the flow [earlier],” Johnson said. “But I was feeding off [Josh Smith and Horford]. They carried us in the first half.”
Seventeen shots for Horford? Was this by design? “We were just playing basketball,” he said. And then, sounding like Urban Meyer: “We were taking what the defense gives us.”
Something else new: Ten different Hawks working at least 10 minutes, none exceeding 40. “We are [deep],” said Rick Sund, the general manager who fleshed out this roster. “But it’s going to take some time for Woody to equate the combos.”
Ultimately the Hawks wore down the Pacers. Indiana scored 65 points in the first half, only 15 in the fourth quarter. This wasn’t so much pretty basketball — though there were instances of that, the most notable being a Bibby-to-Johnson-to-Josh fast break — as it was inexorable basketball. And only the best teams can be described as inexorable.
Before the game, Woodson said of his players: “If they continue to grow, we’ve got a chance to be in the hunt the next three or four years.” And they do.
The new Hawks didn’t trip the light fantastic in Game 1, but neither did they trip over themselves. For the first time in two decades, the pieces are in place. These guys could go places.

The game was fun to watch but was dissapointed in the min played by the reserves? Crawford and Joe Smith should have played more minutes and where was Jason Collins. As long as the score was close I dont see why they didnt play more. Woody you have a bench now!!! If they play more the starters are fresher for a run at the end? I bet anything when they both agreed to play here that they were promised minutes not seconds on the court?

HawkFan,
But in those 39 mins, Joe Johnson didn’t have to work as hard as he usually does which is a plus.

J-Smoove’s stat line last night:
Min FG 3PT FT +/- RB A ST BLK TO PF PTS
35 7-10 0-0 4-7 +23 0 3 8 5 2 1 4 18
One turnover and 0 Three Pt shots. Only one J-Smoove moment that I remember where he turns it over and runs back down the court frustrated and fouls the guy. It’s only one game, but if we get this kind of consistency out of Smoove all year, it’s gonna be a fun ride! +23!

No Mark, if Willie was holding the clipboard, we would be saying this morning, “something’s wrong with the Hawks….”
I think the Hawks are much better than last year, and deeper, if Woody will use this depth, but they better be better – did anyone see the Celtics Tue nite? They are a beast!

Tom,
Before you begin your critique why don’t you try watching the full game? There are just so many fair weathered fans on these boards you would think the Hawks lost. The second unit played the end of the 2nd quarter and a majority of the 3rd. If the back ups had played 20-25 minutes each and we lost then you all would be complaining still.
Look at the Lakers on opening night all their starters played at lease 33 min and Kobe had 38 and Ron and Lamar had at least 40 min.

Not to be so critical of Joe Johnson but he deferred to Josh and Al because they had it going in the first half and he didn’t. He was missing shots and they weren’t. But its good to see him not force it like in the past. He still needs to learn how to exploit the double team and make the team pay when they double.

I was very happy with the win and especially happy with the ball movement on offense, but the defense was horrible. They will certainly need to tighten things up on d and they can not allow easy layups. Good teams punish guys at the basket and the Hawks now have the depth to handle these type of situations (Collins, Pachulia, and sometimes Joe Smith).
Overall I really liked to offseason acquisitions. Teague looks very solid, Crawford will only get better, and Joe Smith is the consumate pro. They have a good chance of challenging the top four, but they must AMP UP THEIR “D”.

Saw the game last night and was impressed offensively and defensively (believe or not). They created a ton of turnovers. Beginning of the game I was diappointed that JJ missed alot and got stripped alot and I wish they would stop running the offense thru him. He rarely passes teh ball off of a pick and roll and he is not that great of a passer. J-Smoove really impressed me with not taking any 3’s but played going to the rim and above it. Wanted to see more Jamal Crawford , but I know he had a little foul trouble but thought he should have been in the game for the last 4-5 minutes. Nothing against Bibby I just think JC’s defense and offense is better at that point in the game. Everyone played their role well fo rthis to be the first game of the season, but I want to see less minutes from the starters and more of the bench. Also, have Horford in the game some times with a true center so we can see him at his real position (PF).

Really good win by the Hawks. Decided to go at the last minute and glad i am. Teague is special! All he needs are minutes and opportunity. Crawford was playing Mr Nice Guy and just trying to fit in to the scheme. Horford has arrived as an offensive weapon. His consistency around the 10 – 12 ft mark was impressive. He was also able to score inside the paint. Whoa Nellie. Josh was great at altering shots and getting to the rim. Marvin was also very consistent and smooth. JJ still likes to pound the ball but got his shot off. When he starts pounding, everyone seems to stand around and watch. The second squad is sooo much better than last year. When Woodie figures out how to play with all his new toys, this team will be even more fun to watch. The young guys are maturing – you can see it in their faces as nothing much frazzled them last night.

The only negative thing I could point out from last night’s game was free throw shooting. In order for the Hawks to take that next step as a true contender in the Eastern conference; they’ll have to shoot around 77 to 80 percent as a team from the free throw line.

My Name is Mark Bradley. I only write sentences under 8 words. This is good. The Hawks are good. The Braves are bad. Joe Johnson is good. I am cool. This is great.

Poor Willie Martinez, the human punchline…I guess for all this talk about ‘Joe Johnson won’t have to do so much” that maybe true, but looks like come crunchtime, it’s still and always will be his time.

Don’t let the 120 points fool you. The Pacers had countless turnovers which resulted in easy points for the Hawks, in addition to the numerous fouls/free-throws awarded by picky refs. The half-court offensive set looks too similar to last years, in particular those Joe isolation plays.
This team would be so much better off if our unimaginative and simple-minded coach actually knew how to incorporate additional offensive sets to encourage more ball movement and player involvement.
With that being said, go Hawks!!
