1. There are still six wins on the schedule. To enumerate: Two against Tampa Bay, one more against Carolina, home victories over Washington and Buffalo and a road victory over the Jets. That would make 10, and 10 generally gets you into the playoffs. And the Philadelphia game here — maybe you’ve heard some discussion about it — on Dec. 6 is a tossup. That would make 11, which would make the Falcons a postseason lock.
2. There’s room for growth everywhere. This is a polite way of saying the Falcons aren’t tearing it up in any single category. They’re 19th in the NFL in total offense, and they should be in the top 10. They’re 25th in total defense, which is one spot down from last season, which was to be expected with the changes made on D. Given the losses of Peria Jerry and Brian Williams, it will be hard for this defense to improve much this season. But the offense should have some breakout games in it, which would give the Falcons a puncher’s chance against anybody.
3. Jason Snelling looked good against Dallas. And that’s a major consideration, seeing that Jerious Norwood is still hurting (hip flexor this time) and Michael Turner is beginning to resemble a one-year wonder. Turner is averaging 3.4 yards per carry, down a full yard off last season’s yield. Put simply, that yard is the difference between second-and-four and second-and-five. Either the Burner gets it going or Snelling gets a longer look.
4. This staff is not Jim Mora’s staff. Mora and Co. were fine so long as nothing went wrong but clueless when something inevitably did. There are fine coaches working in Flowery Branch now — Mike Smith, Mike Mularkey, Brian VanGorder, Sugar Bear Hamilton, Paul Boudreau — and they’ll fix as much as coaches possibly can. And then, if that isn’t enough, Thomas Dimitroff will go to work come February 2010.
5. Remember when we kept saying this might be a better team with a worse record? It still might. The aggregate record of the Falcons’ six opponents is 19-18. Their first six opponents last season were 14-20. There haven’t been any Detroits or Kansas Citys on this schedule, but things will get easier in December. The Falcons are going to lose more games — they’ll lose Monday night in the Superdome — but they’ll manage that breakthrough winning season and they’ll make the playoffs. Keep the faith.

Matt “Choke” Ryan, you make some very good points, and you have done so all season, but numbers are nit everything. MV7 had terrible passing numbers it his numbers did not tell the whole story of his impact on a game. You know I am a big Matt Ryan critic, but his play over almost a year and a half is very impressive. He do not have the strongest arm, his long passes flutter, but Matt Ryan can flat out run an offense. He controls a game on the field. In a few years if the Falcons overrated Gm can put some more talent around him and put some talent on that defense then sky is the limit for those Durty Birds. Mark Bradley wrote an article last year saying give Matt Ryan a chance. I responed by posting, I did not give MV7 a chance, MV7’s play spoke for itself and thats how he won over his fans. Now Matt Ryan’s play is speaking for itself, the man is a damn good QB. I won’t call him great like many of these Jock sniffers do, he has to at least win a play-off game, but he can play. And, the Falcons have a solid coaching staff, maike Smith said he would improve that run defense over the bye weak and that run defense have been impressive over the last couple of weeks. They should not have let Malloy and Foxworth go. That blame lies with your “genius” GM

Our o-line hasn’t been run blocking, and Turner looks slow. Turner started looking slow last year in the last four games.
Ryan is going to have to win games with his arm, because he is going to be blitzed every play.
Someone needs to step up at #1 corner back.
The score in that Dallas game was deceiving. If they hadn’t gotten that punt return the Falcons would have beaten them.
I don’t see how anyone can blame Ryan for that loss.
Keith Brooking is a SLIMEBALL with NO CLASS. He should never be in the Falcons ring of honor. This guy is trash inside and out.

I agree with “most” of your points as well. The only reason I mention QB RATINGS and other stats is because that is what most bloggers on here want to hold against Mike Vick when his QB RATINGS were not very high, yet he had a VERY HIGH WINNING PERCENTAGE.
I disagree with you saying Matt Ryan is impressive in running the offense. Joey Harrington could run this offense with all their weapons, Turner, Norwood, White, Gonzalez, Snelling, Jenkins.
I don’t care about how high the passing percentages are, even Joey Harrington in 2007 had a high 60 completion percentage.
How many more weapons does a quarterback need – Joey Harrington put up simular numbers with far less talent and a bad coaching staff back in 2007.
I keep hearing bloggers saying he is young and is only in his 2nd season, yet Vick @ age 22 in his 2nd season, did not get the same patience in their attitudes
I still remain confident that if you can’t beat the ELITE teams and win in the postseason, you are plain and simple a BUST.

I feel you on that. Matt “Choke”Ryan. I agree with you 100 percent. But, I have been hanging out with real Falcons fans at the tailgate parties at the Dome and not these bloggers and internet bullies. Trust me when I tell you, these bloggers and real fans are 2 different breeds of people. Matt Ryan do need to win a play-off game to take his game to the next level. He don’t wanna fall into the Tony Romo mold. It also amaze me how people think MV7 is done in the league as a starter, I don’t know what they yare smoking. If MV7 don’t touch the field again this season, still at least 6 teams will be throwing money at him to be their starter next season. All those terrible franchises that said they did not want MV7, KC, Detroit, Jacksonville, Carolina, Washington, Seattle, Oak, etc. look at them now their QB situation suck except Detroit, Stafford will be fine in a few years.

Matt “Choke” Ryan,
Your kidding me right? Defense wins championships, not the QB. A team wins championships not the QB. A QB cannot decide who wins and loses. It doesn’t work that way. So what if there is a minute left and the Falcons are down by 7, Matt Ryan is supposed to throw the ball to himself because the receiver’s don’t decide games? Matt Ryan can only do so much. A QB can only do so much. If a QB get’s sacked 4 times and rushed god knows how many times it is going to be a tough outing. Take Aaron Rodgers against the Vikes earlier in the season. I consider Aaron Rodgers to be a good QB who can flat-out get it done if needed. But he got sacked 6 times and hurried all game long against the Vikes and that blame is in the trenches. The receiver’s need time to let the routes develop and it just didn’t happen because the O-line simply wasn’t ready for Dallas. Could Matt Ryan have done better? Absolutely. He had 3 turnover’s but 1 was a garbage INT when the game was out of reach and the second fumble was because the pocket collapsed on him (Go figure).
Your other assertion that a QB is bust if he can’t win big games or playoff wins. Wrong again in my opinion. We all know that the defense costed the Falcons last year. Two busted coverages by Milloy and Brooking is what cost the Falcons, and the fact that the defense let Arizona ball hog that game. That’s where the defense wins the games. A QB can’t do anything if the defense doesn’t get the other team off the field. Sorry, but it just doesn’t happen. It’s a team effort. Chemistry is formed in the locker room, not in the QB’s head.
And no, Joey Harrington could not run the offense as good as Ryan. Harrington cannot run the no-huddle. That assertion is so ridiculous it really doesn’t need an explanation.
The Falcons will be back this week to take down the Saint’s. No panic here. The Falcon’s will bounce back.

I agree, coming into the year i agreed with you and the other ajc writers that said 10-6 was plausible for the Falcons with possibly 11 which is easily a successful year for this team considering we’ve never had 2 back to back winning seasons nonetheless 2 back to back years in the post season so…winning 10 or 11 is definitely a plus.
You mentioned the schedule and Troy Aikmen mentioned it last week as well…we have the third hardest 8 game opening schedule in the league and here we sit at 4-2. Past teams would easily be 2-4 or 1-5.
And I agree, I doubt that we win this game in New Orleans…not that the Saints are that much better than us but for the more obvious reasons of the game being in New Orleans, on Monday Night in front of a prime time audience. Still having nightmares about the last time we played the Saints on Monday Night in New Orleans. Maybe the schedulers will do us a favor and schedule a monday night Falcons/Saints match-up at home next year.

Go Falcons610, there are a lot of bad QB’s starting in the NFL, MV7 is better than half of the starters right now. he will be a starter next year. They will be offering big bucks for him. The man sells Jersy’s and fill the stands. Who is better, David Garrard or MV7. Jake Delhomme Or MV7. Alex Smith or MV7. Who ever is the QB in Seattle Or MV7, Jamarcus Russel or MV7. Please…I completely understand thart you have drank teh Wac ryan koolaid, but at least admit thatThe best QB are measured by winning big games not running a 2 minute offense! If that is what you homers are holding on to now, then I feel for the future of football in this town. The fact is, against teams with winning records Wac Ryan has peed the bed to the tune of a QB rating in the high 60s!! Against the also rans of the NFL he is ove 100. that is jsut the facts… And please stop talking about his completion percentage…Having a 60+ percent conpletion rate is more overrated that Pam Anderson!! Hell, John Elway did not complete 60% of his passes, and Tro Aikman only averaged about 2300 yds a season passing! I hate to use tis name, But those numbers are very MV like!!!! The difference between Elway and Aikman and folks like Ryan and MV& is that in the biggest games, they did not CHOKE!!!! MV& showed up whent he falcons had big games and even won a couple ( Green Bay, and St.Louis) But Ryan has yet to win a big game for the Falcons. Who knows, maybe one day he will, but untli then, He is just another middle of the road QB on an also ran team.

Mark, I was at the game sunday. All the cowboy fans around me were wondering why we never threw
deep. Their safeties were sitting just 6 yards back. I don’t care how bad the blocking was/you have to throw deep. We saw one play where the Falcons kept in 8 to block and sent White on a 4 yard out and Gonzalez an 8 yard out on the same side of the field. the cowboys had 4 defenders on the play. Dumb. As far as Ryan obviously he got rattled but after the game there was not one cowboy fan where we were tailgating who said they would take Romo over Ryan. let the haters talk/who cares what they say. They have an agenda and we all know what that is.

I try to avoid reading message boards like these because they are often littered with comments from idiots and instigators- much like this board is. Go Falcons610 and Kane337, I commend y’all. You actually have a clue about football. If I hear one more comparison between Mike Vick and Matt Ryan, I am going to go crazy. Mike Vick will never be an NFL caliber QB. I loved watching him run around and make people look like fools, but that doesn’t win championships. Name the last team who went to the Super Bowl with a run first/pass last QB… I’ll wait. Just doesn’t happen. And as for “MV7″ being a starter next year? True.. In the UFL. The Eagles signed him purely as a favor to Tony Dungy, who became his halfway house mentor. This is proved by them not doing a damn thing with him this year. Yes, Mike Vick has a rocket arm. Yes, Mike Vick can throw it a mile. But, he has the accuracy of an 85 year old hitting the toilet. A bullet is not gonna kill the enemy if it doesn’t hit them. All of a sudden the smae receivers we had under Vick, minus Gonzo, are actually catching balls. So much for blaming his (in)accuracy on the WRs. Did everyone forget who was the Offensive Rookie of the year last year? And as for “MV7″ being a better leader? He sucked at audibles, referenced plays to cereal names, and scored a 13 out of 50 on his wonderlic. Ryan? 32. Ryan has the poise to be a franchise QB for the Falcons, and as a fan, I’d prefer a pocket passer over a scrambler/inaccurate/dog-fighter anyday. Go Falcons!

Smitty as head coach is a joke. Falcon fans will see that soon enough. He’s a very nice man and he will be run out of the NFL as head coach and back to position coach within 2 years. You say a scrambler has never won the Superbowl, and that you have to have a pocket passer to win it all, I say ok…that is more a function of opportunity than ability. remember, there are 32 teams and the league has played SB’s for 44 years… the only team to commit to that type of QB was the Falcons of the Vick era. So One faild this way and 1300 + teams and countless pocket passers that did not win standing in the pocket…..Just saying….

BigEasy830,
One of the biggest reasons the Falcons didn’t pay Milloy, Foxworth, and Brooking is that we are eating $7 mil against our salary cap this year because our #1 pick in the draft and former starting QB liked to hang, drown, and slam dogs to the ground. Oh yeah, and lie to the face of the team owner that gave him the opportunity to earn $130 mil and probably half that again in endorsement money. Never mind the fact we burned the top pick in the draft on the clown.

You think Vick is the only scrambling QB there has been? Randall Cunningham? Steve Young? Fran Tarkenton? But the difference between these QBs and the other guy is they could actually throw a ball. I did not say you have to commit to a pocket passer. I said I would rather have one than a scrambler. It’s purely my preference and frankly matters not to the Falcons coaching staff. And John Elway had one season of having a 63% comp percentage. Matt Ryan had 61% his rookie year. MV? 44% in 8 games his rookie year, and 54% in 2002(his first full year). The stats don’t lie, he is a franchise QB.

Please lets have some honesty in this debate… Elway was a career 56.9% passer. Steve Young was a runner when he was a backup in Tampa but made his bones as a west coast Offense QB . San Francisco. Fran Tarkenton was perhaps on of the top 5 passers of ALL TIME! And you knopw as well as i do that the stats can be displayed to show what ever point you are trying to make I.E Dree Brees avgs 1 .5 yards per attempt more than Ryan. By that stat, Brees is throwing passes that mean something and not just dumping the ball off to the tight end and backs. My point is don’t try to use that stats to make Ryan a Franchise guy… he is that because of draft position alone. When he has won a game that matters, then give my that billing. Until then, middle of the road, blah, blah, blah….

And yes, Fran Tarkenton was one of the best passers of ALL TIME, but he rushed well too making him the third most rushing QB of ALL TIME. Know when to hold it, know when to throw it.
