The good news: Georgia Tech should — not could, should — play in the Orange Bowl as the ACC champion. The less-good news: Georgia Tech cannot reasonably aspire to anything better than the Orange Bowl, and there is one game better. It will be played in Pasadena, and it’s for the BCS title.
Tech was ranked No. 11 in the BCS standings announced yesterday, and to play for the BCS title a team must be no lower than No. 2. It sounds overly simplistic to say that for Tech to climb nine spots nine teams would have to lose, but that’s essentially how it is. With the Jackets’ schedule, they aren’t apt to jump anybody ahead of them so long as those teams keep winning.
A few of those teams must lose. Alabama and LSU will meet, and the winner of that game will surely play Florida for the SEC championship. And Southern Cal and Oregon face off this weekend. So that’s three teams ranked above Tech that are guaranteed having one more loss than they do today. But only three.
It’s unlikely Boise State or TCU will lose. (Cincinnati could, though: The Bearcats have West Virginia and Pittsburgh remaining.) And if the current standings suggest anything, it’s that an unbeaten team from a non-BCS league figures to trump a once-beaten team from the ACC.
The Jackets have four games remaining in their regular season. They’ll be favored in each. The cumulative record of those four teams is 14-16. Not one is ranked. Nothing Tech does in those four games is going to impress anyone the way, say, Oregon beating Southern Cal or LSU beating Alabama would. The meat of Tech’s schedule is behind it, and even the ACC title game in Tampa figures to offer no heavyweight opposition. Every Atlantic Division team holds at least three losses.
Put simply, a once-beaten conference champion from the Big 12 — say Texas loses to Oklahoma State this Saturday but then wins out — or the Pac-10 would surely shade Tech in the final rankings. The ACC has lost cachet by the carload these past few seasons, and history teaches that the teams extended the benefit of the BCS doubt are those that have already caught someone’s eye. (Think LSU in 2007, which was ranked No. 1 twice only to lose and still wound up the national champ.)
For all its splendid work, Tech isn’t yet in the top 10. The guess here is that it will be somewhere around No. 5 come Dec. 6, the day the final BCS standings are revealed, and that in the grand scheme is really good. (The obvious assumption is that Tech won’t lose again this calendar year, which it shouldn’t.) But the BCS will never be a truly grand creation simply because different teams and different leagues are held to different standards.
Were Tech still in the SEC with its one loss, it would stand a fighting chance to reach Pasadena. Because it plays in a conference that has lost whatever sheen it once possessed, it has next to no chance. Sad but true.

ONE MORE TIME…..Since 1964, the Jackets have managed just 12 wins against Georgia. Let me say that again for all of you Jacket fans out there…12 wins in 45 games. To say that Georgia has dominated this series in the past 45 seasons would be a slight understatement. During that stretch of dominance, Georgia has posted win streaks of five, six and seven (twice). Tech has won three straight once (1998-2000).

Should a GT “Believe” campaign be erected? Their chances of reaching the BCS title game are probably on par with the Braves’ chances of reaching the post-season when that campaign was effected.

bugsquacher – I’m not sure what the last 45 seasons has anything to do with what’s going to happen this year. As Paul Johnson says, it doesn’t help you block and tackle, and it doesn’t give you any points. Unlike U[sic]GA, we don’t have to count on history to give us points, we have the Triple Option.
And ’squash’ is spelled with an S, not a C. There’s a U[sic]GA joke there, but I’m going to let it go. Too easy.

Naturally, Mark Bradley writes an article about Tech, an article that’s on the Tech page and not the uga page, and it is immediately swarmed by slobbering dawg fans. Typical.
I don’t think we have much of a shot at reaching the BCS title game this year. Like you said, nine teams need to lose, and I don’t think all nine of them will. Plus, our strength of schedule is pretty weak on the back end, so there’s no guarantee we won’t get jumped by lower ranked teams even if we do win out.
But it’s good to be in the conversation. It’s a huge step forward for Tech, given our recent history. And we have a chance to be in the top ten after this week. Someone has to lose in the USC-Oregon game, and the loser will likely fall into the teens. All we have to do is take care of business against Vandy.

Can you feel the pain of the poor puppies? We’re loving it, really, we are just having a lot of fun watching the Dawg fans self-destruct with a poor team while the Jackets have risen high in the rankings. So, what can these Dawg fans do about their lousy team? Nothing and they know it. That leaves only one way to feel better about their sorry program and that is to deride ours by reminding of games that took place in 1897 and 2007, like they have any relevance to the current situation.
Yes, their pain and jealousy is deep and it is so nice to watch them squirm on these blogs. Keep trying your pitiful jabs you dumb mutts, we’re loving your misery. THWG!

When Paul Johnson was named the coach at Georgia Tech, I just new he would win considering that he would now have a more athletic player to implement his complicated triple option offense. Now in his second year they are making a run at an ACC conference championship.

bugsquacher, since you seem to be a fan of history, pray tell who owns the most recent national title?
Bring up past history all you want, but it didn’t stop your vaunted program from sh***ing the bed in an epic fashion last season. Just when you think your season couldn’t have been more disappointing, the Dawgs get slammed in the second half by a team led by sophomores and freshman running an offense they had never played in prior to that season. I’m surprised the DA didn’t file felony rape charges for what happened in Athens that day. Players that UGA’s fanbase loves to say “would never see the field at UGA” kicked your a** all over the field in the 2nd half. I have yet to figure out why UGA fans insist on calling the flexbone a “high school offense” as if it’s some kind of insult; that offense put over 400 yards of rushing on your swiss cheese defense.
Winning 7 in a row didn’t bring victory to you last year, and winning 7 out of 8 won’t guarantee you victory in November this year either. How on God’s green Earth can you possibly be so confident that you’ll win this year when you couldn’t do it AT HOME with an NFL QB and RB on your roster? Delusional much? So you go on ahead and keep telling yourself how great your team was, but you may want to fit in some prayers imploring that your defense learns how to tackle. The only thing your defense has done all year is make Jonathan Crompton look like Peyton Manning. Hope you guys have fun at the Who-Gives-A-@#%! Bowl…

I’m a GT fan but I have to say that whipping applied to the Jackets by the ‘Canes would preclude any serious discussion of them deserving to be in the National Championship hunt. Just like in ‘07 when Georgia got smoked by 35-14 Tennessee (on top of a loss to SC by a figgie) then whined about not getting a fair shake by the BCS the fact remains if someone hangs a 20+ difference on you, you’re probably not national championship material in the first place. Lets just worry about one game at a time and let the rest sort out. A possible Top 5 finish would be a great milestone for this program especially after getting thrown under the bus by the school’s own AD a few years back.

have you ever noticed that the most hyped conferences (via abc, cbs, espn are in order top to bottom correlate EXACTLY to the fannies in the seats of each conference????
sec (sec schools hold positions from 4 thru 11)
big ten (osu psu um in the big ten hold the top 3 spots)
big twelve
pac 12 /acc (pac 12 and the acc were close to having the same attendance figures)
big east may not have finished at no 5 as their attendance was truly pathetic
point being that the sec/ big ten / pac 12 are hyped more than any other conference for a reason. their tv exposure is even almost proportioned 1, 2 and 3.
And the correlation of attendance and hype pretty much shows why ESPN toots the sec as being the top conference over and over and over and over again. number of fans equates to dollars and cents for tv revenue.
it couldnt be that because espn holds the biggest football tv contract with the sec, it causes them to hype the sec more than any other conference? nahhhhh not possible.
they show the same segmants wrt the sec the big 10 and big 12 over and over and over again much like a ‘commercial’ for those 3 conferences. the remaining conferences seem to get relegated to clown status…. like they did with the acc and the wheel of destiny.
hmmmmmmmm…..
espn had that shameless acc wheel of destiny. funny thing though…. the acc and the sec had the same exact issues. yet they made the acc the butt of their lame jokes.
both conferences had a trio of strong teams…
both conferences trio of strong teams were playing a bit inconsistantly
both conferences had close games between cellar dwellers and the big 3. only saving grace was that ‘poor’ officiating saved all 3 ‘SEC’ teams from potential defeats in the last two weeks. hmmmmmmm.
could it be a conspiracy? nahhhhhhhh.
than we have the issue with recruiting stars etc. anaybody wanna bet that the stars of recruits are affected by the numbers of fans who buy subscriptions to sites like rivals and scout??????
sounds kinda like the health insurance industry eh?

I’m not going to be TOO disappointed if Tech doesn’t get a shot at the National Championship this season. The ACC hasn’t been all that stellar this year, but there are signs of things stepping up. Some of the “Ole Faithful” teams are showing signs of getting back on track and schools like NC are making strides in the right direction. After, hopefully, Tech wins out the season with a bowl victory we should expect to have garnered the appropriate attention next season! 1. I am NOT lying in any of my posts.
2. I DO have respect for the Georgia coaches and players individually
3. I DO NOT have respect the dog nation collectively
4. I have no beef with any other school
5. You are being forced to learn a new role and not liking it. It’s like moving from the bedroom to the outdoor dog house for the first time. Similarly, it’s like moving from a Florida Bowl in January to one in Idaho or wherever Weedwackerville is (Poland I think).
6. Georgia Tech football players and coaches do NOT fear Georgia players and coaches any more.
7. Tech Nation does not fear the dog nation anymore!
8. The koolaid isn’t working for you any more
9. georgia = Florida & Tech’s bitch.
10. You know I’m right when I say “at Georgia you strive to fit the mold/At Tech we design and build the molds”
Enjoy your anual BEAT DOWN in Jacksonville. Hope you “destroy some property tonite” or something stupid like that. Lol. The only game that matters in the GT-UGA series is the current game – history means nothing, proves nothing. All that matters is winning when these two line-up, and that’s what GT will do again this year. Losing one game in 2009, winning the ACC championship game and returning to the Orange Bowl will be a monumental turn-around for GT, proving all the pundits wrong about GT’s ability to recruit and compete at the highest level, or win using Johnson’s system. The BCS championship game comes later. Whine pups. Tech is back!

George P. – GA Tech doesn’t play Miami, just Wake Forest at home and Duke at Duke. If they win of those games, they win their division and go to the ACC Championship.
Now to my main point; People seem to forget that this is only Paul Johnson’s 2nd year on campus, and he’s still playing with about 95% of Chan Gailey’s players. Most people would have been thrilled to have just kept the bowl streak alive for a couple of years; at least until he started getting his own personnel in place that would be better suited to his offense (4-5 years down the road).
The fact that the Jackets won 9 games last year, and tied for their division, and have a chance for double-digit wins this season, along with not only winning their division but the ACC Championship and a BCS berth, well, that’s truly remarkable.
Let’s couple all of that with the fact that Paul and the boys have busted up so many streaks (beaten UGA, FSU not only for the first time in so many years, but for the first time in Tallahassee, ever, beaten Virginia since 1990, etc.), well, I think everyone would have to agree that the time line for success has been moved up, almost like an onside kick during the opening kickoff of a game. Totally unexpected and really put the team in great field position much sooner than anyone expected.
All of the UGA fans who are on this blog making all of their crazy comments will only get worse over time. Their jealousy will grow as GA Tech’s success grows and UGA begins to fade due to their program becoming stagnant. They will become more and more frustrated, and they will continue to hurl insults at the Jackets because of their blind “loyalty” to the Bulldogs. Until they admit the problems lies with their own team, that will wallow in mediocrity, and the Jackets will continue their ascent and dominance.

Cobb Dawg, Spurrier was an assistant on Peppers staff at GT. He was in consideration, though not seriously, for head coach when Curry was hired. SS campaigned to stay on staff, but Curry wrongly or rightly decided to go another direction. Shortly thereafter, the Ball coach ended up at Duke as head coach, and the rest, as even you should know, is history……… What was that about somebody being a moron?

Actually Spurrier lobbied hard to get the job at GT after Curry left. He knew he could run his offense here but the AD staff would not hire him and went with Bobby Ross instead…..Steve was ticked and went to Duke a year or so later and quickly lead the conference using his offensive style…Spurrier knew he could recruit any kid nation – wide to play in Atlanta, but the TECH staff would not see it….to their great loss.

A Tech loss to Georgia would not affect its chances of reaching the Orange Bowl, since it has no bearing on the ACC title. But, even if Tech wins the Coastal Division, they would likely face a suddenly-hot Clemson team, and their best hope would be for the Gator Bowl.

Let’s get the facts right about Spurrier. He was an assistant under Pepper Rodgers (who was his OC as a sophomore at UF) in 1979. When Pepper was fired, Spurrier wanted to stay but Bill Curry chose not to keep him. Spurrier went to Duke as OC, then the USFL as HC with the Bandits, then HC at Duke. Spurrier enjoyed running up the score on UK when Curry was the HC there because of Curry snubbing him at Tech. He enjoyed sticking it to UGA when he was at UF. Trey other than your offense the rest of your team sucks. Tech can’t win a game that comes down to defense like Alabama or Florida. A poor offensive performance at GT = loss. GT is not “playing the best football” right now. Your biggest asset is the crap schedule that you play. Alabama and Florida are playing the best football because they are multidimensional. They can win with offense, defense, and special teams. Tennessee would more than likely beat you.

I think that what Clemson did to Miami actually proved that if we would have been a little more rested for the trip down to Miami things would have turned out much differently! Remember we played 3 games in 12 days. Miami had 10 days to get ready for us. Our offense is clicking right now and our D looked pretty good Sat. Morgan Burnett made a hit that was phenomenal and our young Linebackers are holding their own. I think we are underrated but to be honest that is good for us. I believe a national championship is far fetched but an ACC championship and a BCS bowl in Coach Johnsons second year is a big deal. I also want to say that Josh Nesbitt is impressing me more and more each week. We have to remember that he was recruited by Chan Gailey not Johnson. So, the fact that he is running that complicated offense as well as he is just shows that he is an amazing athlete. Three 100 yd rushing games and 7 tds in those three games. WOW!! Bay Bay is a beast, Anthony Allen has been a great addition, Dwyer is having a little bit of an off year but he still has held his own. I am proud of our Jackets and cannot wait to beat UGA again this year!!

Tech lost to Miami because our defense was too sophisticated. When the scheme became more reasonable, the tables turned. Sure Tech played 3 games in 12 days, otherwise it would have been 14 days. they just need to keep winning thier games. An ACC championship is the most important and the first step. A BCS bowl would be huge. National Championships require you doing everything right and having the national cache to put your team in the game. It’s not like it’s settledon the field or anything. TCU and Cincinatti are very good. Boise State is good and maybe a bit over thier skiis this year. Not quite as good as thier record. They really only had Oregon on the schedule. If Tech wins an ACC title this year after losing all they did on defense that would be huge.

Yeah dan that tennessee offense is so powerful. Bama couldn’t even score a td at home against them. Bama is the most overrated piece of junk. Tech handled miss st better than fla AND lsu did. Yet you continue your ignorant statements against us. Our d? We took care of VT and VA. You are delusional. Fla should already have a loss but the refs are keeping them undefeated. Your sec is not any better than the acc this year. In fact, it’s below. Vandy nearly beating SC at SC? Give me a break. And that officiating in the fla miss st game. It’s so apparently obvious the refs are doing all they can to keep fla and bama undefeated for the sec game as they have to have an sec team in the nat champ game. It’s going to be funny to watch the ga fans complain about the bad calls in the fla game this week at the same time talk up the sec. Fla bama multi dimensional? ROFL. Yeah, not being able to score a td against tenn sure is multi dimensional. Idiot. Even ohio u did so 3 weeks go. The sec is a joke this year. If the system wasn’t rigged, fla would have a loss to Arky and Bama would be dropping from it’s crappy play. Yay bama beats a 4 loss tenn team and can’t score a off td. They are soooo strong! What an offense. Their red zone scoring, when they do get there 1-2 times a game is one of the worst in the country. That’s is not a pedigree for a nat champ team.

Look, UGA is just a crappy school. Period. Football is just a distraction from the silly coursework that leads to a worthless liberal arts degree and a job at Waffle House. Football at least gets the student’s and alumni’s minds off the wretchedness of their existence for a few hours on Saturdays. So enjoy it even if the team sucks this year and most of the players are illiterate and spend time each week with their parole officer. And be nice to Richt. this is better than the Obama v birthers nonsense! Here’s the dope; no ACC team will EVER play in the BCS Championship game. the ACC is the MAC or Mountain West with better PR (location, location, location – East Coast) and, I suppose, better basketball. While VA Tech, and the old FSU and Miami teams could hold their own against the rest of the country; the remaining programs don’t provide much opportunity of “style points” or computer-friendly wins. GA Tech has a very good team and a very good coach; and they’re enjoying a very good season, but they still have games to play, and as MB points out; with a combined 14-16 record, they’re not leap-frogging anyone. As in years past, a 2-loss SEC or Big XII champ will play in the BCS before a 1-loss ACC Champ. It’s a weak conference. Do the math, an undefeated TCU or Boise State doesn’t even have a shot (at the tile game). UGA? Mediocre team in a very good conference, which gives them style points, but even they can’t compete year in/year out. We need a playoff.

what is funny but sad, if Maryland Terrapins who are currently 2-6 with a win over Clemson as well were in the Mountain West Conference as TCU is in, they would be 8-0 and ranked 6th in the nation. Noone would question it and hail Coach Friedgen as being one of the best coaches in the NCAA. That goes the same if they were in the WAC like Boise State.. they would reign and could even play for National Championship. And the idiots who vote for these schools, TCU and Boise State do not get it. Their conference opponents could not beat Div 1AA schools

Well, its still looking like the Clemson-FSU game on Nov 7th will decide the ACC-A.
Clemson is much stronger than FSU in EVERY aspect. And, despite their current 3-2 ACC-A record, Clemson looks like the strongest team in the ACC. So, Clemson will likely finish 6-2 and FSU finish 5-3 in ACC-A.
The Clemson-USC game on Nov 28th is gonna be one for the record books !!
Watching the Clemson-Miami game was like watching the “Thrilla in Manilla” fight. Two heavy-weights pounding each other to see who was still standing at the end. Hat tip to Clemson for winning what was a complete slugfest of a game.
Anyone else see the wicked “helicopter hit” hit on the Clemson TE
that knocked his helmet off and gave him a concussion? Brutal hit.
GT is gonna have to get MUCH better in several areas
to beat Clemson in a re-match for the ACC title.
It’ll be important to see how Clemson plays their two games against both FSU and UVA, since GT has also played those two.
If Florida does not go to BCS NC game, then I see the ACC Champ facing Florida in the Orange Bowl.

Unless a lot of teams that are ranked 1 – 10 lose over the next 4 weeks, Tech will be going to the Orange Bowl and will probably be ranked in the top 5 or 6 spots in the BCS. That will be a good place to start next year. Maybe in 2010 GaTech will have a chance to play in “THE BCS BOWL” and add another national championship (#5) to it’s list!!! Go Jackets!!

it doesn’t really matter this year…..we just need to keep winning and establish the program as a contender for future years……nobody was thinking NC this year…. i personally don’t believe its fair but its likely an ACC team will have to finish undeafed for a chance to play in the big game…….as far as I’m concerned, another win over the mutts is better than a NC!!!!!!……keep winning and everything else will eventually fall into place…..GO JACKETS!!!!!!!!

The acc is weak. Yeah right oh clueless one. GT beats MISS st worse than FLA and LSU. We didn’t need the officials. AND vandy nearly beats SC at SC??? Can’t wait to see the pounding we put on them this week and still read the delusional remarks from some of you sec morons. Times have changed. You are not above the acc anymore. If the officials weren’t conspiring to have an sec team in the title game, the acc would be ahead of your conf in the sag ratings. now we are one behind. Do these UGA fans really think their offense is that potent???? That is a joke and do they really think their defense can hold us? I doubt it. Just look at the FSU game. Yeah Ponder had a tremendous game as he has in nearly every game this year but our D stopped them when it counted and we just kept on scoring. So, if it is an offensive shootout GT will win against them battered Dawgs!! As for the ACC being weak that is pretty funny too. GT will probably have three(can you Dawg fans count that high?)wins against SEC teams and two of those on the road. Tebow couldn’t put up the numbers Josh Nesbitt put up against Miss State. GT scored more points than Bama could against VT. We also really took it to VTs D. We may have as many wins against SEC teams as Georgia will at the end of the year!!

I really don’t think this is the year. We might have played for it all, if we had not played back to back Thursday games, but who knows? Too many teams to jump, now.
But, this has been an outstanding year for Tech, and we need to realize that we are in the infancy of something very special. CPJ is building something, and I don’t expect the team to take any steps back as long as this man is running the show. Improvement will continue, so UGAG and the rest of the ACC are on notice.

Mark,
GT deserves some praise…but let’s keep things closer to reality. That reality being that Tech is in the ACC. The national perception (as opposed to the local dellusions) is that the ACC is an inferior football conference. There aren’t enough quality teams within the ACC to change this fact. In the past four to five seasons Va. Tech has been gifted inflated rankings because they carried the torch for the conference by default. When voters look and see that GT is atop the ACC hill, they think “The ACC must be in shambles.” Until three or four ACC teams are perennial top ten teams things will remain the way they are. “Where are FSU and Miami? What happened to Clemson and Boston College? Oh yeah, and then there is Georgia Tech.”
I am all for Tech making it to a BCS bowl against a real contender team. The results from last years Chicken Bowl still linger. It would be nice to see what Turkey Neck could muster against Florida or Texas. It would be fun to watch Turkey Neck fume and curse as reality sets in…

Clemson is peaking but is still very much a schizo team. Va which plays both BC and Clemson will have a lot to say as to who represents the Atlantic. I Believe BC has the easier (NC,Va) schedule remaining and will win out while Clemson will drop one to either FSU or Va. In which case Tech will play BC for the ACC championship. Its is unrealistic to expect Pasadena, the Fedex Orange bowl is fine for this year. The financial payout is the same as the Rose and we will find it easier to get more fans/supporters into the Orange. But lets focus on Vandy. This is the BIG game of the week.

Once again the discussion spirals into a dawg fest…a sign of intelligence is the ability to stay on topic. So the reciprical of that would be talking endlessly about a rivalry that has nothing to do with the article.
This whole college football ranking system is garbage. How does a team ranked 14th pre-season, whose only lose comes from an away game to a ranked opponent, A ranked opponent that had the 2007 high recruiting class in the country I might add, only gain 3 spots in the course of 8 games…They have a top 5 in the country win against VT and play the 12th hardest schedule in the country…Other than Florida, Alabama, Texas, and LSU I would put that against any other team in the league except for a system that is so foolishly run that is sucks at its only intenetion…The whole BCS system is worse than having no system at all, and I realize that was once the case and it was better. Its better to have co-champions than a champion that can be disagreed with.

No doubt Tech is having a stellar year. Can’t call the ACC a weak conference either. Both VT and Miami were in line for the title game given a Texas slip up. Tech would have been too if not for the crash in Miami. Here’s hoping that we find a defense this November that can at least slow down that O. Finally a rivalry again where the games actually matter for both teams (well not us this year, maybe next year though).

We must question Tech’s validity in the BCS picture based on their S.O.S. Tech is a fine football team but they should not be in the discussion with top teir teams yet… Tech’s opponents have a combined record of 27-21, excluding FBS Jack State. I am sorry, Tech beat a good Va Tech team that was decimated by Alabama. I have no confidence in their defense what so ever. Celebrating a victory of Virginia is a bit of a joke. I think they will be exposed in the BCS. TCU, Boise St., and other marginal teams would all beat Tech soundly. Its about Defense. Personally, I think Tech will struggle with Wake Forest, a smart and efficient defensive scheme with a very accurate QB. Tech is not as talented as they think.

The thing with the polls and BCS is that you can’t complain if you lose a game. That’s the frustrating thing being a dawg fan. We seem to drop a dumb game or two (or three) a year where it is simply a blow out and the team never gets off the bus. I will never complain about a ranking (no problems there this year) if we lose a game, no matter who you lose to. If you go undefeated and win the conference championship then you can go crazy about the injustice. Like Auburn in 2004 but the SOS does count and should be considered.

The last SOS I saw for Tech was 12th in the country (pre seaon #2). They are missing the two weakest teams in the ACC (maryland and NC State) and they picked three SEC teams to play. Granted those teams are not the toast of the SEC but they generally beat their non-conference opponents and would probably be ranked teams if they didnt all have play the level of competition that exists in the SEC. Put This years Georgia team in the Big East…Big Ten…PAC 10 and they are vying for the the top and ranked. Put those same teams up against SEC teams and they are .500. I would also add that when Tech scheduled Vandy and Miss st. both where rebounding bowl bound teams.

I’m sorry but I can’t let you techies get away with claiming that you ‘knew all along that Paul Johnson’s offense could succeed at this level’. I know plenty of Tech folks and to a person they were, at best, hopeful that he could find some level of success – once he recruited the kind of athletes that could run it of course – but weren’t optimistic. Having followed the guy though Georgia Southern and the Naval Academy, I tried to tell ‘em that they had a good one and just wait and watch. Even going into last year’s Mississippi State game they doubted. Then the light came on, and now they can’t build wagons fast enough for the band-thing.
So don’t try to tell me how smart you are. You’ve tried to have it both ways forever – when you lose it’s because you can’t get the quality athletes necessary to compete…so when you win, you no longer can use that excuse – you recruit, and keep eligible, whoever and whatever you need – so let’s not be hypocritical about it, OK.
And Mark, it’s OK for you to suck up to the Jackets – as Bill Godfrey said, ‘Folks sure are good to you when you win’…just don’t expect to be welcomed back with open arms when that wears thin.

They would certainly end up in the top 3 at the end of the season if they did all that. Not bad for a 2nd year coach if Tech can keep it up.

You want a blog with invective and venom try taking a look at the one posted where Shirley Franklin lambastes Mary Norwood as a mayoral candidate. I hope Norwood is elected and cleans up the crime around Atlanta including those vultures hanging around and robbing Tech students. We can all give each other a little grief concerning our football teams but I hazard to guess we would agree that a safer and more prosperous Atlanta is in the best interest of Tech & UGA fans.

there is nothing funnier than reading what dumb georgia people write. i am currently at Tech and get into sports arguments everyday with people from miami, florida, alabama, uga, and so on. the thing i have learned more than anything in sports arguing is that your team is only as good as your most recent. Let me explain for some of “those” people. History arguments are only viable to the most recent. Techs most recent Natl Champ was 1990. that was awhile ago. Uga’s 1980 even longer. Tech’s most recent game verse uga win 45-42. Sorry uga but until you win this game or the natl championship your trash talk carries zero weight. its the same for tech we beat up miami last year but they beat up on us this year and i have to live with that to our next meeting

If the Gators DO NOT make it to the BCS NC game, The Gator Nation will surely want Tebow’s last college game to be played “at home” in the State of Florida.
With a SEC-CG loss to Bama, a 12-1 Florida team would be a LOCK for the Orange Bowl against the ACC Champ.
Since I think Bama will be the SEC Champ,
I foresee a GT-Florida or Clemson-Florida Orange Bowl match-up.

Hey UGA(Y) fans, here’s one for ya….when you guys get THREE, count them THREE more National Championships, then come talk to us Tech fans. UGA(Y) has ONE National Championship to Tech’s FOUR (1917, 1928, 1952, and 1990). Unfortunately for UGA(Y) fans, Vince Dooley and Herschel Walker doesn’t coach and play every year for you guys like they do in your nostalgic imaginations!!
I’ve NEVER meet a UGA(Y) fan that doesn’t start of a college football season by saying something like,
“Shut, I ‘member whin Herschel ran 60 yards fur dat tuchdown aginst dem Flurda Gaturs back in 1980!! Shut, bubba, dems wus da godd ‘ole dayz to be a dawg fan.”
Every year for you PUPS is the 1980 National Championship year. You guys have a seriously hard time living in the NOW of college football. And you never can just accept a lose, you guys have to blame everybody else (ref’s, cheap shots, bad calls) on why you shouldn’t have lost.

The ongoing debate over who plays the toughest schedule, or who is in the toughest conference, is nonsensical. There are so many different methods of calculation that it only leads to an endless debate. However, here are a few of the “better-known” websites that provide such information.
http://www.teamrankings.com/college-football/ranking/strength-of-schedule-by-conf … ACC ranked 1st
http://www.usatoday.com/sports/sagarin/fbc09.htm … ACC ranked 3rd (or 1st, depending on which calculation is used)
http://www.cbssports.com/collegefootball/polls/119 (VaTech ranked 1st, GT ranked 15, Ala ranked 27, UGA ranked 29)
http://www.zonqsports.com/ (SEC ranked 1st, ACC ranked 6th)
The point is this … the ACC is either the strongest conference in the country (doubtful) or at least among the top few (probable). In any event, almost every site shows that GT has a stronger schedule than Alabama … and EVERY site shows that our schedule is stronger than Georgia’s. So for all of those Dawg fans who want to criticize … stick with criticizing your own program. Goodness knows there are enough problems there to keep you busy for a while.

All of my dawg friends hate the Jackets. I think that’s why I hate the dawgs, so much. They have taken every opportunity to scoff and make fun of GT since I can remember. Every now and then you run into a dawg fan in a bar in South Florida (you can always tell–loud and obnoxious) where they pontificate about the old days and the sheer Glory of being part of the SEC. I would like to feel badly for them as they wallow in their unspeakable misery; but I don’t recall any kindness from them.
Suffice to say it’s good to be a Jacket fan of late. The future looks bright, but only time will tell. UGA’s future…hard to say, thank God for them their past is so AWSOME! Let’s put butts in the seats in Tampa. It’s a short drive and smells better than Athens.

First, bugsquacher you’ve got NOTHING. And after the GATORS spank the dawys you’ll be back blogging against Tech. And it’s because the Dawgs are insignificant nationally and in the SEC. A lot less puppy dawgs fans but the best one was how Tech will only get to the Orange Bowl if we win out. Not stating we will but like that’s not a reward. And where exactly will UGA go. Shreveport? Here is a fact puppy dawg fans:
- Tech is overacheiving
- UGA is again underachieving
- Tech is doing this with recruiting classes well under UGA’s ranked classes. That’s called “coaching”.
- UGA regularly gets highly ranked recruiting classes that don’t match their performance.
- And Tech can’t put these athletes in Housing or Parks & Recreation degrees.

Virginia Tech safety Kam Chancellor told the Virginian-Pilot on Sunday that he was blocked below the waist at least four times during the Yellow Jackets’ 28-23 win two weeks ago. Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer said one of those illegal and “dangerous” blocks occurred on Josh Nesbitt’s touchdown run in the fourth quarter that sealed the win.
Story continues below ↓
“That’s a joke,” Johnson said. “Put the tape on and watch. Tyler Melton cracked the free safety. He doesn’t even block him. He shields him.
“They got outschemed. So, it’s illegal to outscheme them, I guess.”
Earlier this summer, Chancellor said that he thought he had picked up some of Tech’s tendencies on film and could tell where the ball was going before the snap. ESPN singled him out after the game at Bobby Dodd Stadium on Oct. 17 and showed several instances where Chancellor didn’t know who had the ball.
“We blocked them the same way we blocked them a year ago and they weren’t complaining when they won,” Johnson said. What’s up with that Chancellor? GO JACKETS!!!!!!!!

Ezekiel….dude, I am as big a Tech fan as anyone but GT isn’t playing in the BCS championship game under any circumstances even if they win out. The computer alone will keep them out due to future wins against weak opposition. The fact that the ACC is about as weak as I have ever seen it won’t help for wins by ACC teams that Tech has already beat.
North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, NC State, Duke, Wake Forest are just flat-out really really weak teams. That is 1/2 of the ACC. That isn’t even factoring in a sub-par FSU. Seriously the ACC is simply killing any chance GT has of advancing up the BCS ladder. Not that GT can’t get beat by a Clemson or BC in the ACC title game but this league is very weak. I argue this is the very weakest the ACC has ever been.
We will gladly take an Orange Bowl berth against probably a Boise State/TCU. Let’s get there first.

Mark, If GT doesn’t win the ACC championship game it will get interesting. The Gator and Chicken bowl get the picks after the Orange of ACC teams. GT for certain is not going to the Chicken bowl and the Gator will almost certainly pick from Clemson, VT, and FSU because they travel well and at that point it is all about money. In fact you can almost pencil in Notre Dame for the Gator Bowl already and I would say that VT is probably the front runner among eligible ACC teams to face them.
Should GT lose the ACC game (against Clemson they could against BC they shouldn’t) then I think GT and The ACC will lobby hard for the Cotton Bowl to play a Nebraska or Oklahoma team.

JACKSONVILLE – Don’t tell Frank W. “Sonny” Seiler that you know what it’s like to have your dog killed.
“Not till you go pick him up in the boat and take him home,” he said. When he found UGA VII on Tuesday evening, he was bobbing in the lake behind his home. A 10-foot alligator had taken his chest, neck and one leg.
Seiler had picked up UGA VII, part bulldog and part chihuahua, from the dog pound in Clarke County when she was only 12 weeks old.
“I’ve been crying since 5 o’clock yesterday,” he said Wednesday night.
Neighbors had complained about the alligator to the UGA Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission in early October. They worried about their children and their pets.
“I knew that alligator was going to eat that dog,” said Bernie Capasso, who lives across the lake from Siler. Several times, Capasso said, the alligator crawled up behind his home. And twice, he said, it snatched up a duck.
“But to take UGA VII, the pride and soul of our team, is devastating. Our team is in the cesspool already, but now to have this carcass of a mutt to cheer on the team is only going to make things worse.”

Cotton Bowl for Oklahoma or Nebraska? Both have 3 losses already. Nebraska could lose to Oklahoma, and Oklahoma could lose to Ok. State. CBS projects Ok. State vs. South Carolina.
CBS also has GT vs. TCU. They are figuring the probabilities. In reality, Tech has to Win The Next Game, and repeat 4 times.
CBS has Houston vs. UGA in the Liberty Bowl. Their other picks obviously assume UGA will lose 2 more games and be 7-5. A 7-5 SEC team vs. the #1 C-USA team…hmmm…a chance to show that UGA really should have beat Ok. State, I guess.
CBS has UVA vs. Temple in the GMAC Bowl. The absolute freakin’ pits. Having lived in the Philly area for 5 years awhile back, “Temple” and “bowl” were two words I never thought I’d see in the same sentence.

RankingsSayit, nice run. How many NCs during that time?
As for comparing yourself to Tech, remember that Tech today is nothing like Tech of the past. Do you believe Gailey would have engineered a 26 point comeback against Georgia? The more you choose to revel in the past, the more it shows you believe you have no future.

P…JACKET, you used to count on beating Tech to make you feel better after getting blasted by Florida year after year. Now that Johnson has arrived, that is no longer the case. Imagine what it will be like once he recruits players more suited to his system. Get ready for Saturday. Your annual beatdown is coming.

Finishing in the Top 5 will be a great accomplishment. Too bad there isn’t a playoff system so the Jackets could prove themselves to be higher. Maybe someday.
The trash-talking dawgs probably never went to UGA or any college so their sour grapes comments should be ignored.
I will be pulling for them to upset the Gators since [a] it is good for our Strength of Schedule rating, and [b] they represent my beloved state.

whats funny to me is in about 3-4 years ,just when uga kills tech yet again while running that high school offense, you tech fans will be calling for PJ head begging him to quit running the ball every play and asking why doesnt he throw the ball more, and why does he have to try so many trick plays that dont work anymore..haha you guys will then realise that it was chan gailys players that made that offense put up the numbers its putting up now .when pj high school offense have div 2a players running that old tired offense against the likes of UGA and other BCS teams, more times than not tech will get smashed and go through 170 pound qb like candy corn on halloween….haha but you guys shouldnt lose to jax st or william and mary like a few teams in the acc do…have fun now and enjoy the short success of pj and company. and uga fans really have nothing to be jealous about not being a tech…you guys lose way too much..

If I were UGA fans I would be a little more concerned about winning and less concerned about GT. UGA needs more wins just to become bowl eligible. If they are not careful they could do something that GT has not done in a long time and that is not make it to a bowl game. Something to think about.

Tech Fan, I wouldn’t call 2 Humanitarian Bowls, an Emerald Nut Bowl and a Seattle Bowl real bowl games would you? Has Tech ever made a BCS Bowl game. The closet they came was going to the Gator and Chick Fil A bowls and got they tails kicked by W. Virginia and LSU. UGA might not go to a bowl this year, and if they do it might be the Music City or Liberty, but I will take the 3 Sugar Bowls, 2 Capital One Bowls, 2 Outback Bowls any day over the Silcon Valley Classic. Oh, and the last time UGA went to the Musica City Bowl, 2001, the next year, SEC Champs a Sugar Bowl win over that once proud FSU team and a #3 National ranking.

I would love to see Alabama or Florida get GT in a BCS bowl. GT would suffer another total beatdown and humiliation in front of the whole country. The ACC is a total joke this year. What other conference in America has an entire division of teams with 3 losses or more.

UGA fans love to live in the past but dont see the future ahead of them. I keep reading stories about how UGA football players keep getting arrested for dumb violations. I believe the jackets have a opportunity to prove themselves and as the running story has been this year GT has been defying history ever since they beat them DAWGs in Athens last year. I dont really care what happened in the last 8 years but as of right now UGA is weak in comparison to the ‘mighty’ SEC conference. The SEC conference cant even keep a time clock running throughout all of the games and the refs are so bias that they already know who is gonna win before the game starts. Either it is the beginning of the end for UGA or the end of the GT trash talking from the UGAy fans.

I love these comments from UGA fans….especially about “someone has to keep the press honest”. Are you kidding me? UGA gets more press in this state than anyone. Why??? Most of the “Journalists” in the state majored in “Journalism” at UGA. *DING*! Whatever. At any rate…I think most Jacket fans would agree that GT will not be playing in the NC this year. For GT to climb the ladder to the Orange Bowl would simply be a phenomenal year! Why does the AJC (Based in Atlanta I might add..right next door to GT)…feel it is necessary to write a column that basically says…GOOD JOB TECH…but not quite good enough.
Quotes:
‘The good news: Georgia Tech should — not could, should — play in the Orange Bowl as the ACC champion. The less-good news: Georgia Tech cannot reasonably aspire to anything better than the Orange Bowl’
‘The ACC has lost cachet by the carload these past few seasons’
‘For all its splendid work, Tech isn’t yet in the top 10.’
Ah…but now we get to it!…..
‘Were Tech still in the SEC with its one loss, it would stand a fighting chance to reach Pasadena’
OF COURSE…if we were only in the SEC… what a sad mistake we made years ago to leave such a hallowed football conference. Forget that there ARE other sports like Basketball and Baseball. Oh..and ..dare I say…shhhhhh don’t tell anyone….ACADEMIC INTEGRITY.
How about an article that shows the growth of the ACC into a powerful conference? There are 3 teams in the top 25 this year. How about something about Paul Johnson’s transformational season? (Oh..wait..that goes against all the articles about his gimmick offense…). I’m just sayin’. C’mon AJC…give a little more love to the home team.
This article seemed like an olive branch soaked in gasoline

And that is partly why the BCS is a bunch of b.s. Mark. It is like Tech will be penalized just because the SEC is a tougher conference than the ACC. That just isn’t right. This season might just bring the biggest argument for a playoff system to be installed.

The Jackets first team defense gave up 31 points to Vanderbilt. Even UGA’s hapless defense held them to 10. What will happen if we have to play a Florida, Alabama, Texas or USC in a Bowl game? Face it there are no teams in the ACC of that caliber. I do however, feel sure we could wipe Iowa, Ohio State or any other Big Ten team off the map. The Big Ten is a pathetic joke!!!!

Your ‘never had a loss in high school’ quarterback just threw 3, that’s right pull out your toes to count them, interceptions. I think Logan Gray might be your savor just like the commercial says “when it comes to Saturday football you can count on Rev. Richt and F-150″. Needless to say I have seen neither this season and as far as Hamilton smokin’ one lets keep them dawggies in check. How come a lineman is completely inept to renew his learners permit is he stupid or completely stupid. It is hilarious to here the CMR is checking licenses now to make sure he doesn’t have to bail out another player. Spare me the BS and actually man up and admit that you are all ashamed and need to get to get a job from a Tech grad. As far as Bear Bryant is concerned his team mopped the floor at your last ‘Blackout’ or do I mean your last funeral before you were prison raped in Jacksonville last night by them Gators. If this is your only outlet to make yourself feel better then I suggest all of the Georgie fans need to go see their Shrink and discuss what is really wrong: You just aren’t as good as you were last year.
