Best collegian ever? Tebow No. 2, Herschel still No. 1

Tim Tebow is the greatest collegian of the 21st Century. But the greatest collegiate player ever? Not quite. That distinction falls to a man who played for the other side in the World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party, and I speak of  …

Zippy Morocco.

OK, I’m kidding. You know who I mean. As majestic as he was against everybody, Herschel Walker was never so splendid as those three afternoons in Jacksonville. He rushed for 649 yards and scored eight touchdowns against the Gators, who were really good each year but lost three times simply because they didn’t have Herschel. (Granted, Lindsay Scott had a bit to do with the 1980 outcome.)

Not since Herschel has the college game seen a force so irresistible as Tebow. He figures to win a second Heisman Trophy on merit. But Herschel played only three seasons before leaving for the USFL, and he won one Heisman and should have had two (he was clearly superior to George Rogers in 1980) and would have had another had he completed his eligibility.

Grand as he is, Tebow hasn’t been the Florida focal point all four seasons. He was the backup/changeup to Chris Leak when the Gators took the 2006 national championship, and in his first season as a starter he won the Heisman but didn’t lift his team to higher heights. The 2007 Gators finished 9-4. The Georgia Bulldogs with Herschel Walker lost three games in three seasons: Two to teams (Clemson and Penn State) that would themselves take national titles, the third to a team (Pittsburgh) that finished No. 2 in the land.

Georgia with Herschel won the 1980 national title, played for the 1982 championship and was still in the hunt until Clemson beat Nebraska in the Orange Bowl on Jan. 1, 1982. Those Bulldogs won three SEC titles at a time when Paul W. Bryant was still coaching Alabama and Patrick F. Dye was getting going at Auburn and Mike Shanahan was coordinating the Florida run-and-shoot.

It would be wrong to suggest Herschel had no help. He didn’t play defense. (He did, however, return kickoffs.) But it’s instructive that Georgia produced only one first-round NFL draftee those three seasons, that being the aforementioned Scott. It finished undefeated in 1980 despite not leading the SEC in any major offensive or defensive category. It won because of No. 34.

From the moment he stepped onto Shields-Watkins Field the night of Sept. 6, 1980, Herschel was the only Dog who mattered. Remember Clemson biting on the handoff to the broken-thumbed Herschel on Labor Day night 1982 and being laid bare on a reverse to Tron Jackson? (No matter that the play was nullified by penalty.) Every defense was set to stop one man, and in 36 games that man rushed for more than 100 yards 31 times.

He willed Georgia to the Sugar Bowl victory over Notre Dame on Jan. 1, 1981, by gaining 150 yards with a separated shoulder on a day when the Bulldogs managed 127 total yards. The Georgia quarterback, name of Benjamin Franklin Belue, completed one pass (in 13 attempts) for seven yards.

Who's the best college player ever?

View Results

Loading ... Loading ...

In 33 regular-season games Georgia managed 13,012 yards from scrimmage. Herschel gained 5,502 of those. He was 42 percent of Georgia’s offense without completing a pass. (Though he did once throw the ball. Against Kentucky in 1981. Intercepted.)

You can argue that because Tebow runs and passes he means more to Florida than Herschel meant to Georgia, but you’d be wrong. Tebow has demonstrably more talent around him. He has worked alongside three first-round Gators, with Brandon Spikes and Carlos Dunlap sure to come.

I have no problem calling Tebow the second-best college player ever. But no player lifted a program higher faster than Herschel Walker, the Goal Line Stalker. Georgia was 20-13-1 the three years before he arrived. It was 33-3 the three years he dotted the “I.” Cause and effect. Case closed.

1. Greg: I beg to differ, “The Evil Genius” was and always will be the greatest QB ever @ the U of F.
2. H1022: Hines Ward is not the greatest DAWG ever but he’s in the conversation.
3. Mike Lum: 3 home runs in one game and hot dogs soaked in beer; ahh, the old days.

How about this interesting bit of data….

Herschel Walker had 994 career rushing attempts at Georgia.
Tebow has 869 to date.

Mark, I have never felt compelled to weigh in on one of your blogs, but I must offer my opinion today. Herschel was the greatest college player to strap on pads. I had the pleasure of watching most of his games, and he did things no other human has done, and he did them over and over again. Not only do I remember his 70+ yard run against South Carolina in 1980 where he outran three guys who had great angles (in the post game interview the South Carolina head coach said something to the effect of “our fastest kid Harry Skipper had an angle, then the angle went away”), I also remember the Florida games where he stuck it in there 35-40 times against a very tough front seven until the Florida defense was completely exhausted. Quite frankly the guy could do it all. Certainly Bo Jackson was a freak of nature and a great great back, but he never had the chance to show the unbelievable durability that Herschel showed. As for Tim Tebow, he is a great quarterback on a great team. He is a remarkable leader, but as they have said about many a player, “He ain’t Herschel!”

So let me ask Georgia fans this..

Would you rather win the point that Herschel is better and loose saturday

OR
Would you rather win the game….seems like to me yall should be debating how to STOP tebow instead is he better than a player from 30 year ago….the game has evolved SOoo Much from back then… Herschel would be AVERAGE in todays agme!!

“None of the above” was my vote. I’d say Herschel was the single most important factor to an otherwise undistinguished team, as was pointed out in the article, but that was not the question. I’d say Bo Jackson. Not Tebow. His UF teams don’t qualify as undistinguished, either, so he doesn’t get credit for that. A QB I’d rate above Tebow is Philip Rivers of NC State. 4 years of miracle comeback wins, a record 51 starts and best yards per attempt in college football history.

TIM TEBOW HAS HIS OWN BRAND OF GREATNESS. TEBOW HAS HAD GREAT PLAYERS AROUND HIM. LOOK AT THEIR SCHEDULE THIS YEAR. YOU CAN LOOK GOOD AGAINST INFERIOR TEAMS. MAYBE WE CAN HAVE A HERCHEL LIKE GAME FROM ONE OF OUR RB’S.

not even close right now……..barry sanders is the greatest of all time, just based on one incredible season.

Sanders rushed for 2,628 yards, an NCAA record.
He had 3,249 total yards, an NCAA record.
Sanders scored 39 TDs (37 rushing, 1 kick return, 1 punt return), an NCAA record.
He averaged 7.6 yards per carry.
He rushed for 300+ yards in four games.
That was during the 11-game regular season.

if Tebow wins the Heisman and National title again it will Tebow. walker is a distant third with only 5.3 yds a carry for his career. not an impressive stat to be considered the greatest of all time. he just ran the ball a lot.

How lethal would Tebow if he had Walker in the backfield with him? THAT would be a fun game to watch!!! As a Tech fan, I confess that I’d give Herschel Walker the edge as, as Cuz stated, HE was the offense at UGA! Tebow, without the deep threat of Percy Harmon seems to be less effective in the ’stat’ department. Don’t get me wrong, he’s finding ways to win and that seems in line with his character…he’s just not as exciting to watch as Herschel was! Gotta go with Herschel on this one!

A few years ago, the issue of players coming out of high school straight into the NFL came up. Some very knowledgeable/experienced national sports reporters were talking about it and they agreed that only one person has ever been good enough to have been able to play in the NFL right away… Herschel. That may be a little bit of an over-statement, I don’t know. But it sure made me wish I had been old enough to watch Herschel when he was at UGA.

Tebow is something special. As a leader he may be unmatched, and you can’t take away his accolades, which if topped with another title and/or Heisman will make him second to know in terms of decoration. He reminds me of Jeter; I really wish he were an SOB so rooting against him would be easier.

You people really are sad. Tim Tebow is a tremendous talent and also a wonderful role model. He has done more to elevate college football in the eyes of America. It has been so refreshing to see a young man pray instead of shooting himself or others, or getting into drunken brawls. What an influence for young people everywhere. All the players mentioned have talents, but more announcers have stated he is the “real deal’.I would think this would also enter in the best collegian debate.
One must also remember Mr. Walker was a running back-Tim is a quarterback.’

No doubt that Herchel had the greatest impact for his team. But one could argue that the best running back could be determined by his yards per carry. Herschel Walker-5.3, Ron Dayne-5.4, Bo Jackson-6.6. People want to argue that Herscel did it in 3 years. But Bo did it in a wishbone offense. And do not forget that he was hurt most of his junior year!!

Herschel by a mile. I still remember the AU vs Tex game i think in 1983. Bo got hurt in the first or second quarter and never took the field again. He just sat thee on the bench with his head down. I remember thinking if that were Herschel he would have been back on the field ladin his team.

ESPN settled this awhile back. Herschel Walker won in a landslide. A 220lb block of granite from Wrightsville GA …..

This is a difficult comparison. Herschel Walker was much better than anyone else he was ever on the field with (on either team) in college, so my inclination is to give the edge to him. Still, it’s hard to know if he would be as dominant today, because overall I think the competition Tebow is up against on the other side of the ball is better than Walker’s was. Not saying that Herschel didn’t play against some great players, but the players today are bigger, stronger, and faster. Also, with the scholarship limitations now the level of competition across the board is much better. On the other hand, as you point out, Tebow also has better players on his own side of the ball than Herschell did. I would give the edge to Walker, but it’s close.

Sorry, but in any discussion of “Best Collegiate Player” ever, you start with quarterbacks. Quarterbacks have the ball EVERY play, make decisions, and the team wins … or loses … on the play of a QB. As the most important position on the field, be default, the greatest players are Quarterbacks. If a QB has a bad game, you lose. Not necessarily true at RB.

I’d not only pick Tebow … I’d pick about 8 QB’s before I every even get to RB’s.

I was a student at UGA the same time Herschel was there. I was freshman in ‘80 that Graduated in ‘84 and lived in Athens until ‘86. So I saw Bo too. Bo was great no doubt and may have possessed the same raw talent as Herschel. But aside from the fact that Herschel’s Bulldog teams were much better than Bo’s Auburn teams and Herschel’s overall stats were much better as well, Herschel simply had much more heart. Herschel played through a dislocated shoulder while he carried the Dogs to the national title. On the other hand, I along with a national TV audience watched a supposedly injured Bo stand up on the bench – yes literally stood on the actual wooden bench – chomping on chewing gum with a towel covering his head in 1985 looking on while Tennessee kicked he and Auburn’s tail out of it’s number one ranking in a 38-20 game that was never close. We never even remotely saw something like that that happen to Herschel’s Dogs. Auburn never recovered that season in which Bo won the Heisman. To use Bo’s infamous own saying, Bo “did what Bo wanted to do” alright. As far as Tebow I would say the jury is out on whether he’s the greatest ever. There’s a lot of football left to be played this year and if Florida wins the Championship while Tebow takes the Heisman he will have done all aplayer can do and probably accomplished more than anyone before him all things considered. I’ll probably always vote for Herschel as the greatest. Naturally I’m going to be biased and you can’t beat perfection. But I wouldn’t debate a Tebow argument either if those things happen.

William G, you hit the nail on the head.

These are the same people who would say that Eric Dickerson or Emmitt Smith was better than Jim Brown – Roger Clements and Randy Johnson is better than Nolan Ryan – Lebron, Kobe, and Chris Paul are better than Magic and Akeem and Bird – Jimmy Johnson and Jeff Gordon are better than D. Earnhart, Sr.- Tiger is better than Nicklaus and Palmer and Bobby Jones.

The problem is that we are immersed in too much media. Back in the day we had one football game on a week….maybe two. If you made the national news or the cover of sports illustrated, you were something. Now, your face is on sportscenter 24/7 and the hype machine is beating the mantra of “greatest ever” in your brain constantly.

It’s all about now….and history has been swept under the rug.

Tebow is a great player….but he is aided by an offensive system that takes advantage of spreading the field to put him one on one with some poor guy playing defense. Plus he is a quarterback….which means he takes time off.

He isn’t lining up in the I, or the Wishbone (like Bo, Herschel, Earl Campbell, Marcus Allen, etc.) and getting pounded on every single play for 30+ plays a game. Put him in as an I formation tailback or halfback in the wishbone against an 8-9 man front (remember the split 60 defense?) and let’s see how much he dominates.

You might be on to something, Al. We’ve seen humble and pious Tim, crying Tim, rah-rah Tim, attention-seeking Tim, yell at your teammates Tim, rub-it-in-your-face-after-a-big-play Tim, etc. He might actually have more personalities than Sybil.

Herschel was a great college back who screwed up by leaving early, going to the USFL, and ended up being the scape goat who was traded by Jimmy Johnson to the Vikings in one of the most lopsided NFL trades ever. He could have had a great NFL career if not for all of the above.

But no, neither Tebow nor Herschel gets my endorsement. Bo Jackson was and always will be the greatest collegiate football player I ever saw in my life.

Hershcel Walker was a man among men at Running Back. He wouldn’t be denied. It’s not really a fair question. Everybody is big and fast now. It wasn’t like in the 80’s. I respect Tim Teebow’s ability but he has the muscle to help. I would have to go with Hershel.

Unfortunately for Herschel the USFL doesn’t do much for someone’s pro football legacy, although looking back it probably should – there was some serious big-time talent in that league. Herschel used up 54 games and a ton of carriers in his pro career playing for a now-defunct league. Transfer those stats to an NFL career and he’s a lock Hall of Famer. Such is life.

But other than possibly Barry Sanders, he’s the most dominant college player I’ve seen. I thought Tebow deserved to be part of the discussion as recently as earlier this year, but he’s regressed quite a bit. I think the constant pounding has finally caught up to him. I don’t think there are many Georgia fans who would trade 4 years of Tebow for 3 years of Herschel, but I bet there are a lot of old-school Gators that would sell their soul to have Herschel in Orange and Blue for a few years. At least Georgia can claim a win over Florida during the Tebow years. Who knows, maybe two…I know, that’s not likely – but after the Arkansas and Miss. St. games, no longer an impossibility, either).

“Everybody is big and fast now”

I’ve never bought that argument. It’s true that interior lineman have gotten a lot bigger, but I’m not sure they’ve gotten any better. Linebackers and running backs were beasts back then. Herschel had to deal with guys like Wilber Marshall of UF, who was a stud in the NFL well into the 90s.

I thought the defenses in Herschel’s day were a lot more hard-nosed and disciplined than they are today, especially in the SEC. Florida for one put a lot of talent in the NFL in the 80s, as did Auburn.

In my opinion, defenses have never been crappier. In almost every conference, half the teams’ defenses look like the 1980s WAC. Georgia looks that way most of the time. Big and fast doesn’t count for much if you can’t tackle or block. Fundamentals and toughness have taken a back seat to today’s obsession with “athletes.”

Tebow is beyond the greatest… He is simply THE MOST OVERRATED COLLEGE FOOTBALL PLAYER OF ALL TIME… First off, Tebow had almost nothing to do with the MNC that Florida won in 2006… That was nothing but Chris Leak’s team and to say otherwise is a slap in face to a very classy kid (much more class than Tebow)… Secondly, how many quarterbacks have won the Heisman after LEADING their team to a 9-4 record?… Thirdly, look at last year… He lost to a middling Mississippi team… GREAT QUARTERBACKS DO NOT ALLOW THEIR TEAMS TO LOSE TO SIGNIFICANTLY INFERIOR OPPONENTS… Lastly, look at Tebow’s performance this year…. I don’t even think his performance this year as a senior ranks in the top 10 in the nation… Network television and media has built this kid into something that he is not even close to being…

And let’s don’t forget this year how Tebow’s Gators have been bailed out by the SEC refs. They would have at least one loss, possibly two if not for the SEC bias towards keeping the Gators number one. By the way, ain’t no way Tebow wins the Heisman this year. The only way he might is IF Florida won the MNC. Unfortunately for Tebow, the Heisman is award about month before the MNC game.

My most memorable “Herschel moment” involved a play when he didn’t even get the ball. On the first play of the 1981 game vs Tech in Atlanta, Buck Belue faked a hand off to Hershel and then hit Lindsay Scott for an 80 yard touchdown pass. Just the start of an ugly day for my Jackets, who had decided to wear black jerseys for the first time in many years. After the game, a reporter asked Erk Russell what he thought of Tech – to which he answered something to the effect of “they looked real good in their new jerseys!” Even a Tech fan had to laugh at that!
