UGA wins in Nashville; can it possibly win in Jacksonville?

Was what we saw Saturday a circling of the wagons? (Photo by Frederick Breedon IV)

Nashville – I’m going to say something, and you’re going to laugh. You’re going to laugh so hard you’ll make like Chipper Jones and pull an oblique muscle. And that’s OK. I’ll feel you’re laughing with me, not at me. (Sort of.) So here goes:

Georgia has the mighty Gators where they want them.

I know, I know. It sounds like the dumbest line I’ve ever written, which would make it the dumbest line in the history of lines. But the Bulldogs will play in Jacksonville on Halloween with nobody expecting them to do anything but lose by six touchdowns, and that’s not a bad way to approach such an opponent.

“We having nothing to lose,” A.J. Green said Saturday. “We know we have a chance [against Florida]. We’re going to go down there and play hard and play fast and play physical.”

I know, I know. You’re saying: What evidence exists to suggest Georgia is capable of doing any of the above, let alone all of it? Saturday’s game? Hey, that was against Vandy. And I hear that, too. The Bulldogs led by just seven points after 40 minutes and outgained the SEC’s worst offense by only 103 yards. But it was, I submit, better than losing.

And let’s be honest: After what happened last week in this state, we weren’t sure Georgia would win again this season. But they won 34-10 Saturday and got incrementally better. Said quarterback Joe Cox: “All three phases [offense, defense and special teams] played well. We really needed a game where we all played well.”

Georgia ran the ball harder and better, at least in the second half. The defense didn’t allow Vandy quarterback Larry Smith to turn into Joe Montana, or even Jonathan Crompton. The great Green made another great play, turning a sideline hitch into a 65-yard touchdown. It wasn’t the greatest performance in the history of football, but it was the best Georgia has looked in 2009.

What will happen in Jacksonville?

I know, I know. It was still just Vandy, and this Vanderbilt team is a shadow of the past few. But with all the negativity swirling around Georgia, it was a heartening first step.

Said linebacker  Rennie Curran: “Coach kept telling us we have to represent the guys who’ve worn the jersey before, the guys who had the ‘G’ on their helmet and who might not have appreciated the way we’ve been playing. Now the weight’s been lifted. We know we’ve still got an opportunity to do great things this season.”

Like give regal Florida a royal run? “Yeah, why not?” said freshman Orson Charles, a Florida native. “We had an edge today. We’d heard our coaches were going to get fired, but we listened to them. We had a team meeting [Tuesday] and just talked. We broke everything down and said we had to put it in the past.”

Said Mike Bobo, the offensive coordinator who worked from the sideline this day: “A lot of people don’t give this team a lot of credit, and I’m talking about Vanderbilt. But they’re a tough team, and to get something going gave us some confidence. I hope that can carry over against Florida.”

I know, I know. It sounds silly. But it sounded pretty silly two years ago to think that a Georgia team that had been blown out in Knoxville and needed a late Vandy fumble to survive here would go to Jacksonville after a bye week and unhorse the reigning national champ. And remind me again: How’d that one turn out?

Yes. The Bearcats beat Ohio State in the final in both 1961 and 1962.

Mark,
I doubt that the Dawgs defeating UF would truly shock anyone except those of us in Dawg nation. I certainly have told several of my Dawg friends that I truly believe we beat UF this year. First, UF just has not played very well. Alabama is the best team in the SEC this year based on the play thus far. Arkansas should have won Saturday…the two missed FG’s really hurt. Florida can’t run the ball and the receivers are certainly not up to last years standard! They really have not played very well. UGA certainly has not played very well either but we do get two weeks to prepare for that game and that will make all the difference. We will be fresh – they will be worn. This win will not be any real credit to Richt or Martinez but just the reality that would and should occur with any coaching staff where the teams have similar talent. But do not worry…UGA will get back off the band wagon with losses to Kentucky and Yech to end the season.

That’s a good point: I think Bulldog Nation is more down on the Bulldogs than national observers.

Can the dawgs beat the gators? Well, yeah, if the gator first string offense and defense come down with the flu!! The refs are all for the Gators and all over the dawgs. Gonna be a beatdown, even if Tebow has limited duty. Get prepared for a spanking. We will have 10 penalties and score less than 14, the rest is up to the Gators.

Puppy Dawg fans find “hope” in the fact Arkansas hung with Fla. Well, you don’t have Ryan Mallett. And if you knew anything about football you’d know how lucky UGA was getting Arkansas early in the season before Mallett got comfortable in their offense. Go ahead fill your heads with hope and we’ll watch what Joe Cox does with the FLA defense. And then there is Willie Martinez. Enjoy Jackesonville, I know I will!

THIS YEAR
How about those 3 Gator fumbles inside the red zone (and the other Gator turnover) and their missed FG? Oh, those don’t count. The only ones that count are the ones Arky committed. Well, Florida had many more mishapes than Arky and played their worse game of the year, a letdown after the big LSU game. Yet the Gators still won the game. Spell that what CHAMPIONS do! Win when they shouldn’t, unlike USC, Texas, and Oklahoma. The two best teams right now are 1. Bama and 2. Gators. No doubt. And that question will be settled in Atlanta in early December. Keep on believing in your Dawgs, however. At least you are keeping the faith since 1980, unlike so many other Dawgs who despised their team and coaches this time last week.

I assure you it wasn’t for the dispostion of the people. Theory though. Noone, even you,, likes to spend a lifetime around arrogant asses like yourself. Did you marry a woman from up North or did you marry a Southern Women with a different dispostion than your own. I suspect the latter. I have watched both teams extensively and being from Tennessee, I have no love for either, but i would like to make a few comments.

Florida is an excellent team, but after watching them this year and last year, the loss of Percy Harvin, Dan Mullen, and the other receiver have made a major dent in their offense. Tebow is still superb but has definitely been slowed down some since he got hit in the KY game.

GA still has Willie, and there have been too many times when GA’s defense looked like a AA high school team, rather than a major conference, top talent defense. In spite of having highly touted running backs, the offense has declined since ARK. Green and the special teams have saved GA from some even more major embarassments, but you will need a functioning offense and defense to be competitive with the Gators.

Finally, everyone is sick and tired of hearing GA fans crying about how the “refs pick on the Dawgs”. You are undisciplined, draw too many fouls, and need to get a grip. Bad ref calls happen to every team and it evens out in the end. GA may have brought some extra scrrutiny on itself by its consistent violations. And for what it is worth, I’ve seen GA win games it should have lost because there were bad calls that went in their favor too.

Bottom line…Florida just has to be Florida to win. GA has to fix all of the errors listed above AND have some luck. Could GA win…maybe if they clean up their act and quit making excuses.

Here we go again…one win and UGA thinks they will win NC.

UGA maybe average, however, not in the same ranks as UF and Alabama. Just b’cos UF had 4 turnovers and won an ugly game does not mean every team that UF faces will have the same luck and same performance from UF offense. (ARK played a great game)

I know all of us are hurting real bad even with the meaningless win over hapless Vanderbilt, but let’s all stay focused on the same page where it matters. Richt has to go. He’s a nice guy, but professionally he’s just an overrated, overpaid mediocre coach. He needs to go now, not after the upcoming Gator fiasco. Really, in your hearts, you know Mother Marie is right.

Spackler, culturely only parts of Florida are Southern. The Panhandle, excluding the beach areas. The Gainesville and Tallahasee area. Ocala south to above Orlando. Lakeland Florida and surrounding counties, Apopka Kissimmee and that is just about it. The rest of state particularly the beach areas are all northern. I traveled 2/3 of the state in my work a few years ago. There are nice people anywhere you go but percentages are higher in the south in my opinion. Better manners as a general rule. Like yes sir, no maam etc. Rude culture migrates. I did live in Orlando Florida for 14 years and I did observe a large cross section of people who moved down from the North. Some of the nicer people that I observed were from upstate New York areas. Some of the rudest were from Ohio, Pennsylvania, New Jersey NY city and anyone from Iowa(mid west). Spackler, both of us are obviously under impressed with each other and we can leave it to that. I am a diehard Georgia fan, and I and nine other family members graduated from the University. Our football program has digressed from being a power team to a finesse team and it pains us who played the game and have followed the recruiting and program over the years. We have been very frustrated and yes even negative particularly toward our Head Coach. But, like a family member, we can criticize our own but don’t be surprised if you find you hand, as an outsider, bitten if you criticize our family. I haven’t boasted about how good our team is over the past year. It would not be true. Those three or four gator fans who post beligerately are going to be challenged. I tease them like a “sandspur” about meyer leaving because if Weis leaves ND soon I believe Meyer will as well. He is an opportuntist and will leave. Anyway, Spackler hope you have enjoyed living in the South. I personally would never want to move northward. By the way, while you here for 30+ years find yourself a team that you can support!!

Then we wins with a whooping of that arrogants horses backsides Meyers. Those lizzerds is going down and we is going put the beatin on them. The Gaytors aint no goods this year and the pollers knows it. That’s why the Gaytors dropping in voting. All we gots to do is practice and prepares for an extra week and then we beats them Gaytors. Them being national BCS champs again is a croc and the dawgs is just the team to ruin Gaytors seasons. Teablows been playing like he still hearing bells clanging in his helments and no kiss the booboo from Meyers is gonna fix its. History has shown that the team that gets the week off before this game usually does pretty well regardless of who the better team is. The Dawgs have a shot in my opinion. I think the Defense will do a good enough job to give the Dawgs a chance. The question I have is will Bobo call 20+ screen passes or think of something a little more creative than the game plans he had for the LSU and Tennessee games?

I’m hoping the pointed headed Adams has been canned. That would make my days and we could start focusing on being BCS champs again. The first thing I read (back on page 1) is that the “Dawgs” scored more points on Vandy than anyone else in 2 1/2 years.

Only either someone who had no real knowledge of college football (especially the SEC), or the demon possessed would say such a thing.

What a team does, or does not do, with Vandy has no real bearing on reality. Further, if Georgia could run the ball, they wouldn’t have scored that many points. That’s why teams, especially most SEC teams, don’t score as many points against Vandy: they can actually keep the ball on the ground and “grind out” an old-fashioned win. UGA, on the other hand, has an almost negligible running game.

Spackler, I agree with your assessment of the talent we have recently recruited out Florida, particularly out of the Tampa area. I haven’t been as excited about a recruit(Murray) since we recruited Stafford out of Texas. The tandum of Murray/Charles will be dynamic one in the future. In our spring G-game, Murray was the most impressive qb on the field. I haven’t seen that tight a spiral since an Eric Zier pass from the 90’s. We have a lot talent but I and others believe they have not been skilled up as good coaches will do. Ineffective consistent strategy has been the signature of our team for the last 2+ years. Most of our success has been from talent rather than strategy, a result derived from a void in leadership . Look forward to seeing other messages from you.

Doesn’t matter what happened in the Arkansas game, Florida will blow us out. We can’t run the ball, even against Vandy, sure as heck won’t be able to run against Florida.

The Florida defense will eat up Joe Cox, he will probably get his interception totals to surpass his TD total for the year, he’s only like 2 or 3 behind as of today.

We may get a couple of field goals, if that. Somewhere around 49-6 or 52-6.

A few things to consider when comparing 2007 to 2009 Florida UGA game.

1.In 2007, Florida lost to both Auburn and LSU prior to the UGA game. So essentially they were out of National Title contention. If they were still undefeated going into that game, the score would have been closer. Also this year, Florida plays MSU prior to playing UGA. UGA can be seen as a potential trap game and there’s no way they are looking past the Dawgs.
2. In 2007, Florida was breaking in 9 starters on defense. They have all of their returning starters on defense this year.
3. In 2006, UGA played Florida close in a 21-14 lose. They knew they had a shot at them. But this Bulldog team lost 49-10 to the Gators last year. How they respond? I don’t know.
4. In 2007, UGA had big play ability in the passing game and running game, and it all came together versus Florida. This team in 2009 doesn’t have that.
5. After the endzone dance in 2007, I can assure you that Urban Meyer and Co. aren’t looking past UGA.

With all of these factors mentioned, I do think that Florida isn’t quite as good on offense as they were a year ago. They’re still a good offense, but they’re not a great one like they were when they had that ” home run” ability with Harvin and Murphy. Then again, you don’t have to be a great offense to hang up points on the UGA defense( see Tennessee game). And except for AJ Green, UGA just doesn’t have a big play offense to put enough points on the Gator defense. This game won’t be a blowout, but it won’t be close either.

Gators 34-20.

Florida is not as good as last year, but it is not because of Percy being gone. He missed the SEC championship game plus parts of 4 others and wasn’t 100% against OU. The difference is Louis Murphy and Urban’s hire of a coordinator whose best listing on his resume is Indian University. Give me a break, the guy is an idiot. By the way I love to hear all of these whining DAWGS, see you in JAX for the beatdown. But you will cry the Refs cheated you in a 30 point loss.

UGA won’t beat FLA. This is the same UGA team that watched Tennessee erupt into a sideline celebration and responded by doing absolutely nothing! That was more troubling than the final score to me. We can’t run the ball and I just don’t see Joe Cox sitting back against a quality team and beating them by throwing. The only chance we have at all is to bring pressure all game long like Ark did. That is what kept Ark hanging around and having a chance to steal it in the end. We won’t be able to generate pressure rushing 4. Look what it did for the Falcons last night when they kept brining blitz packages. CHI hit on a couple of big plays but Cutler was scrambling a good portion of that game. We haven’t been able to stop many teams from scoring on us so if we are going to lose lets at least go down fighting with aggressive D. Wishful thinking with our bend but don’t break style of D.

I think it could happen, if we play like we did against Arkansas. Whoever scores last wins. And if the refs don’t screw us over again like they did to Arkansas against Florida and us against LSU. We could possibly have only one loss if it weren’t for the excessive celebration that never happened. Has anybody ever discussed there being consequences to horrible calls by refs?

Actually takedown I have played several downs. You have no idea what you’re talking about. Now run along to mother’s basement. She tells me she got you the pepperoni hot pockets this time , so you can stop crying .

maybe i’m crazy too, but i’ve believed they could all year. even after the tennessee beatdown. florida is not as intimidating with out a pass game. and the run game can be stopped. if arkansas can do it (and i remember even uga’s RB’s busting some big ones on arkansas) then i know ugas d line and rennie curran can do it.
if joe cox gets into any groove early, and the entire teams plays agressive, and confident (’07) instead of scared and nice (’08)
then they have a better chance than anyone thinks. this is the kind of game mark richt is most effective. the impossible games.
the bye week always does miracles as well.
