Was what we saw Saturday a circling of the wagons? (Photo by Frederick Breedon IV)
Nashville – I’m going to say something, and you’re going to laugh. You’re going to laugh so hard you’ll make like Chipper Jones and pull an oblique muscle. And that’s OK. I’ll feel you’re laughing with me, not at me. (Sort of.) So here goes:
Georgia has the mighty Gators where they want them.
I know, I know. It sounds like the dumbest line I’ve ever written, which would make it the dumbest line in the history of lines. But the Bulldogs will play in Jacksonville on Halloween with nobody expecting them to do anything but lose by six touchdowns, and that’s not a bad way to approach such an opponent.
“We having nothing to lose,” A.J. Green said Saturday. “We know we have a chance [against Florida]. We’re going to go down there and play hard and play fast and play physical.”
I know, I know. You’re saying: What evidence exists to suggest Georgia is capable of doing any of the above, let alone all of it? Saturday’s game? Hey, that was against Vandy. And I hear that, too. The Bulldogs led by just seven points after 40 minutes and outgained the SEC’s worst offense by only 103 yards. But it was, I submit, better than losing.
And let’s be honest: After what happened last week in this state, we weren’t sure Georgia would win again this season. But they won 34-10 Saturday and got incrementally better. Said quarterback Joe Cox: “All three phases [offense, defense and special teams] played well. We really needed a game where we all played well.”
Georgia ran the ball harder and better, at least in the second half. The defense didn’t allow Vandy quarterback Larry Smith to turn into Joe Montana, or even Jonathan Crompton. The great Green made another great play, turning a sideline hitch into a 65-yard touchdown. It wasn’t the greatest performance in the history of football, but it was the best Georgia has looked in 2009.
I know, I know. It was still just Vandy, and this Vanderbilt team is a shadow of the past few. But with all the negativity swirling around Georgia, it was a heartening first step.
Said linebacker Rennie Curran: “Coach kept telling us we have to represent the guys who’ve worn the jersey before, the guys who had the ‘G’ on their helmet and who might not have appreciated the way we’ve been playing. Now the weight’s been lifted. We know we’ve still got an opportunity to do great things this season.”
Like give regal Florida a royal run? “Yeah, why not?” said freshman Orson Charles, a Florida native. “We had an edge today. We’d heard our coaches were going to get fired, but we listened to them. We had a team meeting [Tuesday] and just talked. We broke everything down and said we had to put it in the past.”
Said Mike Bobo, the offensive coordinator who worked from the sideline this day: “A lot of people don’t give this team a lot of credit, and I’m talking about Vanderbilt. But they’re a tough team, and to get something going gave us some confidence. I hope that can carry over against Florida.”
I know, I know. It sounds silly. But it sounded pretty silly two years ago to think that a Georgia team that had been blown out in Knoxville and needed a late Vandy fumble to survive here would go to Jacksonville after a bye week and unhorse the reigning national champ. And remind me again: How’d that one turn out?

Y’all, we have to be realistic and steel ourselves to the outcome of the Florida game, which will be ugly. Florida would have to have their worst performance of the year for our boys to have a chance, and that just isn’t likely.
We do have enough talent to stay in the game, but as usual, the coaching just isn’t there. And you never know how many of our players will be in jail or suspended, sad to say.
Let’s all just stay focused on the one thing we fans can do, which is to come together to demand that Richt and his cronies be fired. All you have to do is look at Florida, Alabama, and LSU to know that we can do so much better.

Iagree about the personal foul being bad, but what about the leg whip/trip that caused Rainey’s fumble?
Just pointing out that bad calls happen, the refs don’t put the ball in the end zone, and good teams force FG attempts (like we did after that fumble). Hog fans/Gator haters need to stop using the ref card and point to bad kicking and missed passes. 2nd down penalty calls don’t lose games, players do.

MAGIC HAPPENS! YES WE CAN! YES WE CAN!
Oh blessed GOD, Guardian Of Dawgs, please bring us Tricks and Treats for Halloween. Magic, Miracles and Lady Luck have been mighty good friends to the Georgia Bulldogs! Even Smoke and Mirrors are appreciated as long as the Dawgs and entire Bulldog Nation are happy! Blessings come in many forms, and the Dawgs are grateful for one and all no matter the form.
The entire Bulldog Nation, coaches and players have indeed had a wake-up call and are humbled and appreciative of all blessings GOD, Guardian Of Dawgs, provide to our beloved UGA. We acknowledge and humbly repent our 2007 childish and immature excessive celebration the first quarter after scoring the first touchdown which cost us a 30 yards penalty and a Florida touchdown, but we brought home the trophy (42-30). We repent for being so excited and fired up that our actions caused us to experience dawgkarma in 2008 and Albert and Alberta chomped off Uga VI’s tail (49-10)! Ouch! Bless his sweet spirit. We acknowledge that the attempt to spark the Dawgs was a poor judgment call from the sidelines. We humbly apologize to the SEC officials for our rude and disrespectful behavior and ask for their forgiveness. We promise not to do it again, as this penalty makes our beloved Vince Dooley look foolish since he wanted to stop some of this NFL celebration foolishness from taking over the SEC fields. Maybe they all needed to be suspended for poor judgement like the player who was arrested for riding his scooter down a construction road with a suspended license. The best leaders have the same set of rules during the game as they do after the game! Important to walk your talk.
Oh GOD, Guardian of Dawgs, YES WE CAN with your help beat the Gators without stupid gimmicks. stupid penalties and stupid plays. YES WE CAN appreciate tricks and treats you deem appropriate to put in our Halloween Dawgbags. We beseech you Oh GOD, Guardian Of Dawgs, to allow the players, coaches and fans to show the Bulldog Nation, the SEC and the entire world that not only can the Dawgs play like their pappy Junkyard Dawgs, they can also be respectful of “the arena” and its guidelines. We have learned our lesson and repent. We promise to be play fine in 2009 We promise to act better, now that we know better and be winners on and off the field — win or lose. We accept what works and leave the rest behind promising also to leave the black jerseys in storage! Twice was nice; third time was no charm! Big Al came to Athens and stomped on Uga VI (41-30). Ouch! Bless his sweet spirit.
Magic happens. Miracles happen. Lady Luck laughs! is no stranger to Georgia Football. Uga VII has bitten the tails of Albert and Alberta for many years…may 2009 be a bite that’s might fine! One fan suggested Uga bite more that just Albert’s tail…will leave that to the your imagination!
YES WE CAN! The Dawgs have nothing to lose, and much to gain. The Bulldog Nation knows the feeling of great disappointment when the dream fades away. We’ve been there and worn the T-shirts home. The Dawgs also know the elation of celebration and have heard the sweet sounds of Lady Luck’s laughs! Oh, sweet sUGAr.
Dawgs, no problem that the media adores Tim Tebow who, other than Herschel Walker, may become one of the best college football players of all-time. Pay no attention that the SEC officials seem to be in awe of him…they also were in awe of Herschel and the Junkyard Dawgs. Let Herschel and other Dawgs be your inspiration and motivation and the wind behind your backs. Let their unseen spirits soar!
Believe in Magic. Believe in Miracles! Believe in Lady Luck! Believe when you hear the (former DIXIE) Redcoat Marching Band playing music. Believe when you hear the fans seen and unseen. Believe anytime the Georgia Bulldogs play football! We aint’ too proud to beg. Work your magic in South Georgia and make VII proud! Go Dawgs!

The reason that I think the Dawgs have a glimmer of hope in Jax is not how they played against Vandy, but how poorly the Gators played. Tebow was off his game, throwing int’s, etc. I have said since the start of the season that the Gators are a great team, but not the #1 team in the land. Bama & Texas are better teams in my opinion. The SEC and/or Nat’l Championship game will prove that point. If the Dawgs manage to pull out a miracle win, they must play a complete game on both sides of the ball. Cox has to continue hitting his target (no int’s), Green has to continue doing his thing, team has to dramatically lower the penalties, D must pressure Tebow, & special teams must be incredible. In the SEC anything is possible. Win or lose, I am a Dawg & every Dawg has his day. Let’s just hope it’s 10/31/09.

There’s no way UGA or anyone else will win if the same bunch of idiot officials that did UGA-LSU do the game. And after watching Ark-Fla Saturday night, I (without knowing) stated it must be the same group after the personal foul on Arkansas that gave Fla the tie, and eventually the win. And guess what? According to the AJC it was. Two games in less than a month they’ve made calls that can’t be reviewed that have determined the outcome of a game. Come on SEC. Twice now you have had to admit on Monday these guys “blew it” on Saturday. Let ‘em go and give them a ticket to Canada where they can call games and no one cares.

Keep deluding yourselves that the officiating has anything to do with UGA’s woes. Until and unless you deniers come to grips with the issues and understand that the core problem is coaching, you may as well start getting used to 6-6 or 7-5 seasons and going to the Toilet Bowl in mid-December, while teams with first-rate coaches like Florida, Alabama, and LSU play in January.
This message is presented as a public service to all suffering Dawg fans. I feel your pain.

The ones wishing and hoping are the same ones that don’t see anything wrong with the direction this program is going in. Wake up and smell the coffee it won’t happen. And say it did happen by a stroke of luck is that satisfactory is that all you aim for to be able to beat Florida once in eight years? I want to beat them badly every year and so should all Dawg Fans, and that is why this direction must change.

Others than Adams the only change we need make is to gets some better players and to fire the refs that helps FLA and LSU. We has got to get more support of football from schools so good players have more time practicing and having fun and Adams is responsable for that. Afters Adams fixes then players get better for NFL and more NFL players come to UGA to get in drafted. Players not here for NFL need to be cut or shang highed to get some better players. Then we start beating FLA like Herschel and Lindsey Scott. FLA dont have history of football and Sugar championships like Dawgs. We got to change school so Meyer is likes Zooker again and we have raining sugars for Dawgs.

Of course Georgia will win this time. The only time they beat Florida is when it DOESN’T matter. Anytime we actually NEED to beat Florida to live up to expectations we fall flat on our faces. Georgia wins, Florida gets po’d and wins out, then beats Alabama by half a hundred in the SECCG and then blows someone out in the BCS Championship Game. Then they do’nt care so much about losing to UGA and just shove another MNC trophy in our faces.

Definitely a slow news day at the Sports desk. C’mon, MB, get real. The Dawgs lost all chance of ever rolling into Jacksonville “under the radar” the moment the entire UGA roster danced in the endzone in 2007. You can bet that the Gaytors are going to be ready for UGA. Richt is Meyer’s favorite whipping post since that beautiful day in 2007. If Tennessee can run up that many points on the dawgs, what do you think Florida is going to do? You said it yourself, last weekend was VANDY. Hell, Lowndes County could beat Vandy this year. You’re dreaming pal and you’re just setting up these poor pup fans for a bitter, bitter disappointment. If I’m Richt, I’m practicing everyday – taking advantage of the bye – and putting everything into winning this game. But, I’m not Richt. No, Richt practices two days and then “hits the weight room” for the rest of the week. My Gawd, where’s the intensity?
The Dawgs’ days are numbered. Unless there is a significant paradigm shift in the program next year, I feel bad for my brothers to the north. They are in for a long, long, long contractual period with Richt.
Go Jackets!

Mark, I enjoy your column, especially, your great sense of humor. You and Tony Barnhart have alludedto the 2007 game as cause for optimism among the mutts. Mr. Barnhart has mentioned that the mutts had open dates before their wins in 1997 and 2007 and that seemed significant. Maybe, but I think the fact that the Gators were coming off championship years in 97 and 07 were more significant since those were rebuilding years. In 2007, the Gators had a very young and inexperienced defense; that certainly is not the case this year. Give the mutts all the hope you can, they’re going to need it.

JaxGator you aint got a clues. The reasons Gators lose some years is becauses the Dawgs know more about football. If Gators did not have refs helping them win than UGA have beaten them likes we beats Techies. In 97 and 07 the Gaytors had really dumb team and even refs could not win it for them.
This year Gaytors got no QB because T-bows has ringing bells in helments. Gaytors been barely winning againts sorry schedule and getting refs to make up differents. Withs no Harven the Gaytors run game missing in action this year and T-bows aint no good at the passes. UGA had some D pass stopping problems with Compton, but T-bows can’t pass anyways. Because of no passing and no running Gaytors can’t get scores on UGA. Then Coxs is good when Bobo coach him on sidelines. So Dawgs scores plenty in Jax. Plus Dawgs has best kicker in SEC to make it easy to outscore Gaytors. Just waits and you will see Dawgs win in Jax by a large stomping amounts of scoring.
Go DAWGS! Gaytors stinks! Go DAWGS! Gaytors stinks! Go DAWGS!

I think it is funny that TENNESSEE can have 2 losing (5-7) seasons and a 4-loss season over the last few years,
BAMA can have a decade of bad seasons including 6-6 in Saban’s first year
FLA can have several 4-5 loss seasons (including bowls) during the Zook era and 1 of Meyer’s seasons
LSU just had a 7-5 season LAST YEAR
Auburn could be looking at 2 consecutive losing seasons
BUT when UGA finishes a consecutive #2 and #10, finishes top 10, 6 out of the last 7 and has 2 SEC titles in that time and then have ONE bad season after losing 3 huge peices early in the draft, ALL OF A SUDDEN people are saying “UGA is in decline” “UGA needs to rebuild their program” and tons of other GARBAGE
Maybe it has to do with playing 16 freshman, tons of sophomores, and very little juniors and almost no seniors against one of the toughest schedules in the country a year after losing the #1 and #12 overall picks at QB and RB…
To all of you naysayers and outsiders running down the status of UGA’s program, maybe, just maybe, UGA is re-building with young players to go on another run…GOOD GRIEF

Mr. Bradley,
I humbly submit to you the fact that you may be quite delusional. While it is every UGA fans dream to beat Florida, dreams and reality are two very separate and distinct things. While the Gators showed some cracks in their defense last week and a slow performance from its offense, the Bulldogs do not posses the enough talent to take heavy advantage of these weakness’. And while I’m sure most UGA fans would like, at the least to see a competitive game the weakness’ in their team are too glaring to overlook. Simply put, the Bulldogs best chance of winning is by a miracle and nothing less.

Yeh ok, your right Ga has not a thang to lose in this game, but the game. And they will because you have to have a QB, blocking, and a D-Line that are good which they don’t. I predict for Ga to look like Kentucky against them gators. Only if Tebow is held back like he was two years ago from an injury and may be tries to play with a broken leg does the defense have a chance. The offense has none. Ga would be better off to line up in the wishbone with Green at the QB running the option. GA 3 – florida 55.

You’ve gots to be trying to go all philospohicel on me about cutting trees making sounds in forrests. I don’t worry about all the forrest issues when football season is on.
With bumbling that seems to be you’re teams because them Techies been bungles for years. Just cause you roots for GT and FLA you should learned early that 2 wrongs don’t make it right.
I knows that you upset from seeing Dawgs get experience and coming together teams at this point in season before Jax. We lost all we lose this year and now Dawgs going on a table runing that ruins FLA season just like we done before.
The problem with the Gaytors is that Myers don’t know football but is good at pollaticking the refs and BCS polls to get in champ games and beat ups on chumpy Big Ten team.
Don’t worry cause Myers is leaving this years after getting call from popes to replace Wise at noter dum. Then Gaytors will be Zooking it once more agains.
