Nashville – First off, it’s chilly. Forty-three degrees and overcast at present (9:23 Central Time). The few Georgia fans who gathered for the Dawg Walk were wearing coats, scarves, gloves and stocking caps. And they still didn’t look warm.
Speaking of cold … Vanderbilt has the nation’s 108th-best (or, put another way, 13th-worst) passing offense. Lucky for the Commodores that a truckload of magic elixir has just pulled into town. The top passing performance by an SEC quarterback this season was Ryan Mallett of Arkansas on Sept. 19. The third-best was by Stephen Garcia of South Carolina on Sept. 12. The fourth-best was by Jonathan Crompton of Tennessee last week. Guess the common denominator.
You got it. Willie Martinez and his defense.
Say this for Willie: He has single-handedly rearranged the standings of every SEC fantasy league. If you simply drafted the quarterback playing against Georgia in any given week, you’ve clinched first place. (And it’s only midseason!)
OK, enough about Willie. (Really, though, can we ever say too much about Willie?) If ever a game versus Vandy can be said to be a big game, this is it. This is the difference between being 4-3 headed to Jacksonville or looking at a season of 6-6 or (shudder) worse.
Me, I think Georgia wins by two touchdowns. But I thought Georgia would win when last it traveled to the Volunteer state, and we know how that turned out. No matter what happens here today, I’ll be available for observations, bon mots (or, more accurately, bon nots) and song requests. So join me, won’t you?

what’s your take on the dilemma to come if Martinez is fired and Garner doesn’t get the DC job? Recruiting may suffer but I don’t think the new DC should be forced to keep any existing staff, it should be his choice. Methinks the entire defensive staff likely needs to go.

Bless you, Mark, for giving us hope. We have one of (if not THE) best athletic departments across the board in the country. Given the rabid fan base, marketing success, recruiting success and past on the field success, I just don’t see how Damon Evans can allow Willie Martinez to continue running the football program into the ground (pardon the pun). Something MUST be done. Getting destroyed by a crappy Vols team and then having their smart-@$$ coach flying his helicopter in our state and getting our future talent must not be allowed.

I would think the Head Coach not the Coordinator would make the call on assistants below the level of Coordinator. You can’t fault ALL position coaches for sub-par play. I don’t know why Geno Atkins’ play no longer merits his starting after being preseason All-SEC after his sophomore year. But let’s give Coach Garner credit for starting Weston ahead of him if Kade merits the playing time.It’s folly not to allow for down cycles in the SEC.Even if we don’t like the particular way we have cycled down.The disappearance of our runnig game when I thought we had as many as 3 potential All SEC performers on the offensive line is the biggest shock of the season for me. I still can’t account for it.

As far as recruiting goes, it must be considered that while we’ve done well at the skill positions, we’ve had no offensive line or defensive ends now for two straight seasons. Someone’s not looking at the whole picture.

What’s really aggravating is that Martinez shouldn’t have had a chance to screw up this season. Mark Richt is too smart of a man to think that his buddy would all of a sudden become a great def. coord. in year 5 on the job, so why the wasted year? Gentlemen, we are now back to the mid-nineties. We will start losing recruits and the program will slip back to the middle of the pack. The powers that be in the athletic department have become obsessed with the skill positions and speed on the lines. I would rather see big, slow, mean and ugly linemen in the trenches ready to dish out some punishment. Save the speed for the linebackers and the secondary.
This will take a few years to fix. We have to start with better recruiting. This staff laid an egg3-4 years ago. Just look at Cox! You mean that guy is the best they could have brought in here in 2005 when we were on top of the world? The cupboard is bare and empty!

Here’s my prediction. The Dawgs will come out in their first drive (on offense), look great, score a touchdown, and fizzle the rest of the game due to adjustments (or lack thereof). RIchard Samuel will continue to run the ball standing straight up, get his clock cleaned, fumble (twice), and come back in the game (coaching genius).
The defense will be dumbfounded by PLAY ACTION & BOOTLEG all day and look sloppy…did I mention at least 6 penalties, players in the wrong positiion, poor tackling, and just plain apathy.

It will be interesting to see how UGA responds. Look for 1/4 Willie to be more aggressive against a one-dimensional. lowest talent in the SEC, offense. Look for the loyal UGA supporters and Mark Richt to point to a decent only game by the defense as proof that everything is OK. Look for Florida to beat the pants off of us again.

Everywhere that Willie Martinez has been as a defensive coordinator (Central Michigan and Eastern Carolina) he’s been HORRIBLE, yet, he was tapped by Mark Richt to be given the reins of a top-3 SEC defense, top-10 in the nation.
WHY? The only reason Martinez got this job isn’t because he has the resume to back it up, it’s because he is Richt’s best friend. And Richt refused to do the right thing this past offseason and fire Martinez for the good of the team.
The moment Mark Richt put his personal relationship with Willie Martinez ahead of what was and is best for our team is the moment Mark Richt lost his moral authority to coach this football team.
What he did on Martinez’s behalf at the cost of our team is unforgivable. Mark Richt does not have what it takes to coach this football team, and he does not deserve to coach our football team.

Are you kidding me, we call time out to allow them to set up a fake punt – our coaches are lost – come out of the time out with seven or eight at least fifteen to twenty yards off the line. We should have been pressing the punter to keep him from pinning us back against the goal line. Every game futher convinces me that our coaches are totally inept and Richt is either disengaged or equally out of touch. We continue to do a good job giving teams hope. If I coached a struggling team I’d love to see GA coming to town. We are fortunate that Vandy’s offense is equally as bad or worse than ours.

Alright!!!! I have been trying to believe in our team and coaching staff but this game is getting me on the fire the whole dang staff bandwagon. I have never, never, never seen a team retreat totally without crossing the line of scrimmage on a punt return. Who are these coaches? Vanderbilt is so-o-o-o-o bad and we are doing everything to keep them in the game. Where is our offensive line? There are so many questions I don’t know where to begin.

Its your dream job. The job you have been waiting for. The last job that you ever want. Problem is, you may not get to stay as long as you might hope. See regardless of winning 10 games quite a few times, you have lost to your biggest rival 5 straight times. You have only been the head coach 7 years. You are 1-6 versus your biggest rival. Sure you are beating up on a few teams in the conference. But you cant get over the hump. Two of those losses were 63-14 and 65-13. Thats embarassing!!!!
Sure you have never won LESS than 9 games in a season, and you have had 4 straight ten win seasons, but the fan base is tired of being embarassed on that neutral field every single year. Ten win seasons are NOT good enough. And whats worse, you havent even won your conference A SINGLE TIME!!! All because you cant beat those guys you play every year on a neutral field. only ONE BCS game, and it took till your 7th year to get there!!!
Should you be fired? No. You arent fired. The administration gets you to make a couple of changes to your staff. After all, You are too loyal to the coaches. You are friends with them as well as co-workers. Sure you are a good guy. You are well liked in the fan base. You are family oriented. You are a good man OFF the field as well as on. You recruit good, you bring in top notch talent every year. But is that enough? The university decides that you are still the man for the job regardless of some grumblings about you not being fiery enough. They still think you are the man. Good thing too.
The next season turns out pretty good, you beat your rival 45-12 and go undefeated winning a national championship. Everything is good for you. You are Mack Brown, and the University of Texas is glad they stuck with you. Other schools around the country should be taking notes

Offense is a train wreck, we will continue to get stuffed, until we can throw the ball down the field to keep them from stacking the box, unfortunately they have watched our game films and know that the teams that beat us stacked the box and Cox could not get the ball down the field. What happened to all the changes in the d-backfield that Richt referenced this week. Thanks to Bobo and as you noted his special genius for keeping the defense on the field for majority of the time in the first half. CMR keeps saying we have to run the ball better, but when you can’t throw the ball more than ten yards down the field your running game is going to suffer.

Since when did we accept Vandy as a barometer for ANYTHING other than how well our second and third string offenses and defenses were coming along?
This is how far Bulldog Nation has sunk in their expectations, and it is all thanks to Mark Richt, a man who lost the moral authority to coach this team the moment he put his best friend ahead of the team.
I refuse to accept this mediocritu any longer. And this game is making me physically sick.

Incredible irony in the fact that our d-coordinator was/is a d-back coach which is our greatest liability along with our linebackers other than Curran. If you took Curran off the field we couldn’t stop anybody. I’ve never seen a team with linebackers and d-backs that wait until the receiver is past them to start moving.

Where’s Marlon Brown – has he made the field yet. Poor decision by Cox to dump to Munzenmier, should have thrown the ball away. Watching our QB makes me really appreciate the arm Stafford has. Cox can’t throw the ball down the field if he had led T. King would have been a TD instead short allowing coverage to make the play. Another bad decision by Cox throwing to White who was well short of first down yardage, if he had caught the ball we would have never got a field goal off.

I think has more to do with how you leap. You can’t take a running start. Principle of verticality, as we say in basketball.

ON THE PENALTY, the UGA center fired out and fell down. Vandy player #49 jumped slightly forward, blocked the kick, but landed on top of our center.
If you watch the replay, the ref is staring right at this, and pulls the flag out after 49 lands on our center.
So it’s the “you have to jump straight up, not run forward and jump” part of the rule. The Vandy player didn’t really move to forward… but with Georgia’s center coming to him.
I wouldn’t have called it, but the rule is to protect offensive lineman from being injured by jumping players landing on them…. and #49 did land right on top of our center.

It’s sad when the best you have to hope for is a minimal number of embarrassments for the rest of the season.
I think most Dawg fans at this point pretty much know we have no defense, which magnifies when you have a stagnant offense (i.e. Cox at QB and no running game). Thank God we are playing a team FAR worse than we are! At least we have a week that allows us to joke about our team on both sides of the ball and still win.
I was gonna mow the lawn in the 4th quarter but it is drizzling so I will hang around and watch this. I will enjoy the rest of the second half without cursing and try and see the humor in it. Doesn’t mean I ACCEPT mediocrity though. GO DAWGS!

Murray is not tall enough for the NFL… he won’t leave early. But, based on the little info I have, he was a mobile running QB who was the best in the state of FL; and in the spring game, he wasn’t great, but did seem to be able to make things happen.
THAT SEEMS LIKE THE FUTURE TO ME.
Mettzenberger (sp?) is a big, tall QB with no mobility… who would put a non-mobile QB behind this offensive line???
Logan Gray has always intrigued me because he can run, and in the spring game, he was winging it pretty damn good.
Give Logan some REAL series in this game and see if he can compete with Murray for the job next year.

I hope at least Gray plays some QB today it looks like Murray will redshirt.On that note I wish Samuel would have took a redshirt last year.I don’t get how defensive players are allowed to basically get away with taunting but the offensive players are closely scrutinized.

When Cox got sacked the Vandy defensive player ripped Cox’s white towel from him and tossed it into the air about 20 feet or so…with all of this crap about celebration penalties, why was that not a penalty? Taunting? Certainly on the same level as Wooten’s and possible more….what gives?

Rick – Murray is very athletic, much more mobile than Cox for sure. Frankly, Mettzenberger(sp?) seems more like the kind of qb Richt would prefer. Murray looks like Tate Forcier (Mich. qb) to me, at least what I’ve seen.

For what it’s worth Richt has a longstanding history of not playing freshman who had a major injury as a senior in HS.They always take a RS.There is different excuses given but I can’t think of any kid who missed all or most of their senior year in HS and played as a true freshman.

Is Cox the biggest problem? No. But look at the NFL, Titans can’t run this year, and their D sucks (remind you of anyone?). The team needs a spark… if the line & running backs can’t run, at least Vince Young might be able to run / create some magic with his feet.
Cox shouldn’t be blamed for the problems in the run game BUT he’s not a good enough QB to overcome those problems on his own.
Logan Gray might sux, but again his mobility might provide a spark. Why not test it against a poor Vandy team???

Much like your resounding victory over Jax state. We didn’t leave 7000 seats in Stillwater, we got an extra 7 the week of the game plus the game wasn’t in downtown ATL, shere all you freaking libs live. Nobody notices the 70 tons of trash on your urban campus.

Cinci, you may not have been in Atlanta when Vick (Dog Killer) was here. But the THREAT of Vick running a bootleg backside, killed any defensive pursuit. So little Dunn and even slow Duckett were able to see big holes on the front side.
