Josh Nesbitt: ‘Warrior’ quarterback becomes Tech folk hero

The play of the game, and surely the season. (Tallahassee Democrat/Phil Sears)

The play of the game. (Tallahassee Democrat photo by Phil Sears)

Of the many things that happened in Tallahassee on a stormy Saturday night/Sunday morning, the one that lingers most transcended mere football and became instant lore. With seven-plus minutes left and Tech leading 42-38 in a game that would see 93 points scored and would  last more than 4 1/2 hours, Josh Nesbitt stopped being a football player and became a folk hero.

Wrote Taz Anderson, the Atlanta entrepreneur who was a Georgia Tech captain under Bobby Dodd in 1960, in an e-mail: “I’ve been watching this game a long time, and I have never seen a play like Nesbitt’s.”

Said Paul Johnson, Tech’s coach: “We work on [doing what Nesbitt did] in practice. I’m kidding … That was all No. 9.”

What No. 9 did: Flipped a pitch to A-back Roddy Jones, who dropped it; saw Nigel Carr, a Florida State linebacker who weighs 230 pounds, pick it up; ran over to Carr and tore the ball from his grasp, regaining possession in a game where possession meant everything. (The moment can be viewed and reviewed in the YouTube clip below.)

Johnson: “I don’t know that I’ve ever seen a quarterback do that.”

Anderson: “That is a young man who was not going to lose.”

Said Brian Bohannon, who coaches Tech’s quarterbacks: “He’s a tough guy, and he wants to win … He’s got a lot of pride.”

In the time it took to snatch from a bigger man, Nesbitt made himself the symbol of an historic Tech victory — the Jackets had never won at Doak Campbell Stadium — and a team that seems as stubborn as it is  skilled. He had little idea of what he was doing, and even now the immensity of that one play hasn’t fully sunk in.

“I wasn’t aware of [Tech fans' adoring response],” Nesbitt said Wednesday. “But I’m glad to know they liked it.”

About the sequence: “I was going to try to tackle the guy, and then I saw the ball. When your back is behind the wall, you’ll do anything.”

It should be noted that Nesbitt did more than save the game. He won the game, too. He rushed for 140 yards. He passed for 131 yards (on just eight attempts). He scored three touchdowns and threw a touchdown pass. Indeed, two snaps after he reclaimed possession from Carr, Nesbitt stormed 22 yards to the score that, for the first time in a long game, gave one side a double-digit lead.

“I’d always wanted to play on that field,” he said. “I remember [Florida State legend] Deion Sanders, and then Warrick Dunn and Peter Warrick.”

And then Nesbitt, on his first trip to Tallahassee as a starting quarterback, did something legendary himself. When he arrived back on campus in the early hours Sunday, he reports that he “slept good.” And this week fellow students keep telling him, “Man, that was a wild game.”

You wouldn’t call Nesbitt a classic quarterback — through three games, he’d completed only 15 of 40 passes — but you’d want him on your team. He has thrown the ball more precisely (22 completions in 33 attempts) the past three games, and that fits the Nesbitt profile: He gets better as he goes. Tech gained 116 yards in the fourth quarter against FSU; Nesbitt accounted for 105 of them.

Speaking of Nesbitt, Johnson told reporters this week: “He played like a warrior out there.” That description is deployed so often it has become trite. Except in this case. No other word fits the way Nesbitt performed in Tallahassee.

He was bold and indomitable, a now he’s a folk hero. Josh Nesbitt had himself a long good night.

Thanks for writing this Mark. I can’t believe that this play isn’t getting more attention from the four letter network. Josh is a warrior and if he keeps playing like this he will be a GT legend. He’s already beaten Georgia in his first attempt, beat FSU twice, and Clemson twice.

Looks like Cox shouldn’t be a starter either? You’re either a homer, or don’t know football. Joe Cox isn’t the reason UGA has stumbled a bit. Give ma break. Josh Nesbitt is just plain not a QB, ask anyone. And again, he wouldn’t see the field at Sanford Stadium in the red uniform. Yes, he appears athletic, but that doesn’t make a QB.

I guarantee 9 out of 10 football coaches around the country would jump at having Joe Cox (his arm, his field vision, his instincts, and his intangibles) over a kid that can pitch a ball and heave a ball up in the air seven times a game. Give me a break you nerds.

Roger Dawg? What freakin Joe Cox have you been watching? You honestly think Joe Cox is better than Nesbit? Granted there two totally different styles of QB but hands down Nesbit is performing much better. Furthermore, why the hell would Nesbit want to play for UGA? Tech 5-1 UGA 3-3, UGA is playing uninspired and soft football right now. You are just pissed off because you are like many other delusional UGA fans that really think “the DAWGS” should be playing for a national championship every season. Do us Tech fans a favor and go blog on a UGA blog and fuss about your sad problems over there. Here at Tech we FINALLY have something to be proud of. Win or lose this weekend we have made many improvements this season and expect even more next season. Josh Nesbit still hasnt reached his full potential in this system but he is getting there. The last 3 games Nesbit has started to remind me of some guy down the state below us. Some of you (especially UGA fans) may have heard of him, I think his name is TEBOW. His heart and his will to win and literally push his team to victory is incredible. Tim Tebow is an all time NCAA great and I have the utmost respect for him, but Nesbit is doing Tebow like stuff right now. Nesbit is a poor mans Tebow at this point. Ready for VT. Go Jackets!!!

Cox is definately part of the reason why ugay is a .500 team. He overthrows open receivers (1st half of lsu game, overthrew a wide open aj green for what would have been an easy td), he is late in his reads (avg 1 int per game with a 58% completion rate), and his qb rating is less than Nesbitt’s (135 vs 160). Cox is not a big time player. He’s a solid D1 QB at best. Nothing special about him at all. In fact, it’s really sad that he sat for 4 years and is still just average. I’d take Nesbitt over cox any day.

I almost spit my Coke out when I saw the FSU guy pounding the turf after Josh stole the ball back from him and GA Tech retained possession and actually got a new set of downs.

Metal Jacket; you’re correct about Josh. He was one of the top passing QB’s coming out of High School NOT an option QB; in fact, he had NEVER taken a snap under center until last season when he became starter under Paul Johnson’s spread option offense.

Josh came to GA Tech to play under Chan Gailey’s pro-style passing offense, thinking he’d have Demaryius Thomas and other wide receivers to work with from the pro-set out of the shot gun. The fact that Josh has not only learned how to take a snap under center but to also learn how to run the option so quickly is a testament to not only this young man’s abilities, but to his desire to be a “team player”.

Josh epitomizes a leader through his ethics of hard work, which is translating to success on the field. No one deserves it more than him.

Both teams have had memorable plays this year: Nesbit’s play vs. Florida State. Derrick Morgan’s sack attacks vs. Clemson, Branden Smith’s end around “warp speed” return against South Carolina. Brandon Boykin’s 100 yard kickoff return against South Carolina.

RogerDawg – enough with the generalities and venom about Tech being nerds and the fans (every team has its share of poor fans and no one can say their fans are all happy go lucky sportsmanslike – the point of the article was that Nesbitt made a very miraculous play – one you don’t see very often.

Nesbitt is a good QB – you can dismiss him all you want, but he was highly recruited by lots of great schools and is proving to be a very dependable offensive weapon that is winning games for his team. You are right – Cox is not the problem with your Dawgs – he is not helping matters, but he is not why you are losing games – that has been a team effort – poor defense, poor running game, lack of blocking and tackling, etc.

GT is having a good year – call them the second sister and not in UGA’s league all you want, but they are 5 and 1 and you are 3 and 3. You can prove you are better in late November, but I wouldn’t be so cocky at this stage. VT may beat Tech this weekend, but if they don’t, I am sure you’ll be back with an excuse for why Tech got lucky to win the game. Hey – we have some free hgot dogs and cokes left if you need some. That’s about the only stereotype you did not use in your messages.

The best thing about Saturdays game was all the cheap shots in the end of the third and the whole of the 4th quarter that the FSU defense was throwing. Our guys kept their cool, and acted like professionals. Too bad you cant say that about FSU.

GT for you and me wrote: “DawgSimple: Would rather have turkey than buzzard meat this saturday”

Please tell me the buzzard meat post was not a reference to the Vanderbilt Commodores and you’ve got them confused with condors. Tell me that’s not the case. Bet it is, though.

Maybe this will shut up the losers that keep calling for Jaybo to come in. I am telling you that he will NEVER start for GT, unless someone is injured. Too much talent coming up in the QB position.

RogerDawg – you seem to be part of a small minority of UGA fans who are thrilled to have Joe C at QB. Talking to a couple of UGA grads today – you seem to be one of the few who would argue he is a worthy successor to the Green, DJ, Stafford line.

That said – they are much more frustrated with CMR’s refusal to take the necessary action (ie. let Willie go) to improve the team in some weird tilt to loyalty. – Though I suppose the players are the problem on defense – not the coaching?????
