Damon Evans on UGA football: ‘I do have some concerns’

Georgia athletics director Damon Evans said today via e-mail that he does “have some concerns” about the state of his football program. Responding to an e-mail asking for his feelings regarding the Bulldogs’ season — they’re 3-3 for the first time since 1996 — Evans offered this:

“I do have some concerns about where we are at this point of the season. I know Coach [Mark] Richt, the assistant coaches, the players and our fans have the same concerns with our current record and the way we’ve been playing.

“Coach Richt and I have talked just as we do periodically throughout the season. I think his focus right now is on the immediate future, which is the Vanderbilt game and doing everything possible to prepare our team. That’s where it needs to be.

“Beyond that, I have total confidence that Coach Richt will properly evaluate our team, address concerns and prepare the right path that will direct us back into the position we all want to be in — competing for championships.”

As statements go, Evans’ would seem both pointed and nuanced. He didn’t pretend to happy with current events, but he didn’t issue a directive for immediate “significant improvement.”  (Vince Dooley, Evans’ predecessor, did that with Ray Goff back in 1995, which turned out to be Goff’s last season as coach.)

If you’re Mark Richt, Evans just said what you want to hear: That his boss has “total confidence” in him. But if you’re a Georgia fan, Evans just said what you want to hear as well: That certain “concerns” might need to be addressed and, put simply, that the University of Georgia expects more from its football team.

Some do not get it: of COURSE Adams is the puppeteer! Ah but he is also a very pleased one! He is HAPPY with the status quo. UGA: the Southern Public Ivy (see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public_Ivy).

That is your future Bulldog Nation. The administration is happy. The vox populi matters not. Obesa cantavit

Roylee13-If a “not very good” team humiliated Georgia, then what does that tell you about the state of affairs in Athens? Not trying to be a smart-ass by any means. I know Tennessee is not a great team, and is probably two or three years from being one, but that was a big time behind the woodshed game Saturday. I would much prefer UGA be on top of the game so if/when UT beats them it means something. I live here and most of my friends are UGA fans so I hear all different points of view, but from where I sit it seems to me UGA is dang near in crisis mode.

I know from first hand experience, that Coach Richt is loosing the recruiting battle. I have a son that is 2 years out of a 7AAAAA high school that lost only 5 games during his 4 years on the team. This team was loaded with talent, 2 kids had NFL pedigrees! It was exciting and fun to see all the head coaches from all the major universities, Pete Carroll, Nick Saban, Meyer, Tubberville almost every practice had some college coaches attend. Guess what? No Mark Richt he sent Bobo instead! In those 4 years only 1 player signed with Georgia, Nick Saban took 3, Pete Carroll took 1, Ralph Freigen took 1 the A+ difference makers that are capable of changing a game are going out of state! Georgia recruits and signs mostly B+ players simply because coach Richt wants to recruit from his office in Athens! I don’t know exactly what Nick Saban is doing, but he’s kicking every body’s butt when it comes to recruiting, they have A+ players sitting on the bench waiting on a chance to play!

Joe Cox if your serious about coaching you need to transfer to Alabama today!!

I just want to say one hell of an excellent post. I was saying the same thing 2 days ago. My rant an tirade for CMR to be fired is simple. It is 2 fold. One he is a BS recruiter. I am tired of hearing just how great he is as a recruiter. UF is coming into GA and taking the real recruits. Also, whatever is leftover, UA is grabbing. And Don’t forget, UT and AUB + USCe have always done well in GA. When CMR first arrived he put a fence around GA’s Blue Chippers. Not so much anymore. We now have 5STAR players going to USA and God Forbid Stanford, but enough about the recruiting. Lets focus on the coaching, or there lack of.

CMR the greatest of God’s creations of a HC decised one day to promote not one but 2 unprepared and inexperienced asst Coaches to be our OC and DC. We have a STC that everyone hates. A LB coach who has deterioated our so called 5 STAR LBs, a Strength and conditioning Coach who apparrently does nothing, and OH YES the best part… A WR coaching RBs,and a RB coaching WRs. We also have an OL coach who worked a one year miracle last year. Now, who is responsible for building this staff, and placing each individual in their role?

Let’s face it, we have been slowly sliding down hill since Pollack and Greene have left. But guess what? They were recruited and signed by… Jim Donnan. What has the GREAT CMR done with his own recruits? There are the reasons such as BVG leaving. The shame of it all is the fact that we are perenial TOP 10 in recruiting, and these recruits are suffering from a lack of coaching and teaching. But hold on a minute. We are not recruiting 5STAR football players. No we are recruiting 5STAR atheletes. And we are doing this with noone capable of coaching and teaching these atheletes to be football players.

Simply put, what is the FREAKIN deal? He hands over OC duties to be a full time HC. What the heck does CMR do during a game? A week? Hell at all?

I have tried to rationalize. Tried to figure out what the deal is. I have tried to alibi Bobo out, hell CWM too. The only one left to blame is CMR. After all, he is the boss. That is where the buck stops. The responsibility of the dire shape this program is in.. lays at his feet.

How does CMR overcome the poor decision he has made? CMR deserves to be the HC of Tim Tebow. It is a shame though that Tebow went to the devil because he knew the odds of winning were a helluva lot better.

What concerns do you address, Coach Richt ?

It is total, widespread, complete, utter, collective, complete failure of a “coaching staff” of college roommates and buddies of Coach Richt to teach our kids a damn thing in every phase of the game of football.

Damon Evans was recruited to UGA to play football by Vincent Dooley, himself back in the 1980s.

Address the concerns ?

What concerns Damon Evans ?

17-19 LOSING record against what ended up Final AP Poll Top 25 teams in the 8 years and 6 games of this “coaching staff” assembled by Coach Richt.

15-16 LOSING record against LSU, Auburn, Florida and Tennessee.

7 LOSSES in 8 years and a half against teams who ended up NOT RANKED in the Final AP Poll Top 25.

We cannot beat the teams we are supposed to beat, and lose to 1 a year every year for 8 years and a half now, and counting.

We cannot beat the Final AP Poll Top 25 teams, either.

We are NOT better than Florida.

We are NOT better than LSU.

We are NOT better than Auburn.

We are NOT better than the vols.

In fact, we also have LOSING RECORD against LSU, Auburn, Florida and Tennessee at 15 wins and 16 losses against these 4, 2 from the East and 2 from the West.

We are headed no where as a football program.

We saw fit to give this assemblage of coaches on Coach Richt’s “coaching staff” huge raises this Summer.

As if, by giving them raises to the equivalent of other Coaching Staffs in The SEC and elsewhere, this “coaching staff” of Coach Richt would somehow gain legitimacy by their huge raises.

While others surround themselves with Coaches who are in fact BETTER than their head coach in their area of expertise and able to garner their school RECRUITS who are NFL caliber by all measures thereof, we get ONLY THOSE RECRUITS in this state and beyond who just like all of us fans are Bulldogs by God.

Jon Fabris coached linebackers for the Cleveland Browns 1 year in the year 2000.

That’s it.

The sum total of all the coaches on Coach Richt’s “coaching staff” including himself, who have coached even 1 day in the NFL.

1 year by 1 “coach” and he has NEVER COACHED LINEBACKERS for Coach Richt.

13 Georgia Bulldogs’ “coaches” 1 of whom has coached 1 year in the NFL and he is NOT coaching the position he coached in the NFL and never has for Coach Richt.

Mike Bobo is his Offensive Coordinator. He has never had this job and has not proven himself at all, now has he ?

Bryan McClendon is a Wide Receiver. We have a wide receiver coaching running backs. Is there any wonder no one can find a hole, or hold on to the football ?

The 2009 Media Guide does NOT even mention who coaches Special Teams. Be assured NONE have ever coached or played the position they are coaching.

Tony Ball is a RUNNING BACK. Instead, he is coaching wide receivers. Does HE get credit for AJ Green or the BLAME for Marlon Brown ?

Jon Fabris is a Quarterback and then a Defensive Back. Instead, here he is coaching Defensive Ends. What Defensive Ends ? There aren’t any and there are NONE being recruited. Duh.

John Jancek is a Defensive Lineman. Instead, here he is coaching Linebackers. Excuse me ?

John Lilly is a Quarterback and Wide Receiver. Instead, here he is coaching Tight Ends. All the talent we have provided him in recruiting on this roster and he had 0 tight ends catch more than 5 passes grand total all season long last year. Gave him 2 more this year of NFL caliber. What has he done with them ? I ask you ?

Willie Martinez is a Quarterback and Defensive Back. Instead, he is the Defensive Coordinator until Coach Richt DEMOTED him this Summer and PROMOTED John Jancek to CO-DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR. What is this, pray tell ?

JOHN EASON is the Director of FOOTBALL OPERATIONS ? Excuse me. We fired the sucker I thought for failure as WIDE RECEIVERS COACH with everyone dropping passes, failing to block downfield, and poor route-running. Coach Richt, wanting to be a nice guy for his buddy JOHN EASON, made him DIRECTOR OF FOOTBALL OPERATIONS. If you can’t coach, get PROMOTED.

This is where we are at.

(1) LOSING RECORD of 15-16 in the 8 plus years against LSU, Auburn, Florida and Tennessee – 2 from the East and 2 from the West.

(2) LOSING RECORD of 17-19 against in fact Final AP Poll Top 25 teams in the 8 plus years.

(3) LOSING RECORD of now 7 LOSSES to teams NOT RANKED in the Final AP Poll Top 25 the year we LOST to them in the 8 plus years, averaging do this 1 time EVERY YEAR.

(4) In Summary, we cannot beat the Top 25 teams but LOSE TO THEM, can’t beat the NOT RANKED TEAMS but LOSE TO THEM TOO, and find we have a LOSING RECORD against LSU, Florida, Auburn and Tennessee at 15-16 against those 4.

Who the frig is he beating ?

Who are you fooling yourself he is beating ?

The facts are the facts, and this isn’t just this year – this is the entire time Coach Richt has assembled his “coaching staff” since he got here December 20, 2000. Coach Richt is OVER HIS HEAD in hiring a Coaching Staff. He has proven that.

So, Damon Evans, what are you going to do ? Hire a Coaching Staff for Coach Richt ?

Just felt the need to repost these 2 posts. UGA has some problems that we cannot agree on what the main problem is. Is it the players being recruited? Is it the coaches in charge of these recruits that are failing to teach these young men. Finally is it the HC whose responsibility it is to place coaches and recruits in the best possible situation to succeed?

Sorry to say that the dawgs are awful, this is the worst georgia team i have seen in thirty years. They have no drive to win games, and the defense is the worst in the nation, martinez should be fired now, not wait until the end of the season. Coach Richt is a good man and he needs to stay, but he needs to run the program and not let others do it for him, cause its not getting done. Cox should also be replaced he is not uga qb material, sorry this is not high school.

We want Mark Richt to stay!!! But we want some of his assistants to go! namely Willie Martinez, who is completely incompetent as a defensive coordinator. Tackling fundamentals are abysmal. The defensive scheme just does not work at all. The pass rush is non-existent. Other than Rennie Curran, the linebackers are in bad shape, constantly out of position and missing tackles.

Whoever is in charge of the kick-off team should be run out of the state.

And what’s up with the offensive line? Why are they just wimpy when it comes to blocking for the run?

What I don’t hear from anyone from UGA explain is how your team is currently 3-3 (supposedly during a down year) when you’ve consistently been getting the elite recruiting classes year-after-year. Something just doesn’t add up????? Definitely sounds like a coaching issue to me.

What resume (proven track record) did Bobo have prior to becoming the offensive coordinator at this level? Here is what is on the UGA website:

Bobo’s Coaching Experience:
1998, Georgia (Administrative Assistant); 1999, Georgia (Graduate Assistant); 2000, Jacksonville State (QB’s); 2001-present,Georgia (Quarterbacks); 2007-09, Georgia (Offensive Coordinator/QB’s)

We have to read the statement as carefully as Mark Richt probably has or will.

I’d like to hear more fire out out of Richt, but for Evans’ part, I liked this.

He recognizes that there are problems. He restated the goal: to be in a position to win championships (and something in it suggested he meant national, not conference). And, he let Mark Richt know that it’s his football team (meaning Evans isn’t going to insert himself at the game planning or strategic level but that it’s also Mark Richt’s responsibility to get this mess straightened out).

All in all, well balanced.

[...] Georgia athletics director Damon Evans said today via e-mail that he does “have some concerns” about the state of his football program. Yeah, but USC’s definition of a down year is not playing for a Nat’l Championship and settling for a little ole BCS Rose Bowl bid while our down year is not playing for the SEC East and just hoping to qualify for a bowl. 2 schools with different standards.

If he’s so concerned, he needs to do what he should have done years ago… get rid of Martinez. Bobo should be gone as well. This season is pathetic, especially with the talent we have. I heard on the radio last night that we had one game in almost 20 when Van Gorder was DC that an opponent scored more than 30 points on us. We’ve had close to 20 games already that teams have put up 30+ points since Martinez has been there. When players are constantly out of position (Evans and Miller), that’s poor coaching. When a QB like Crompton can put 300 yards on the Dawgs, that’s poor coaching. Our offense doesn’t look much better… three plays: throw to AJ Green (and overthrow him), run Samuel up the middle for one yard, then run Samuel for two more yards. We consistently are punting the ball on 4th down with 5 or more yards to go. There is no excuse. The ONLY consistent player this year is Drew Butler, and possibly AJ Green. One last thing… maybe if Richt would uncross his arms and try to pump his team up and show ANY emotion, that might help. At least then people would think he still cares.

Dawg

October 13th, 2009

To the person who said we need to support our team… these comments have ZERO to do with lack of support. They have to do with the total frustration of the Georgia fans who KNOW we have the talent to do more than what we’re doing. There is no spark, there is no aggressiveness, there is nothing anymore–and it starts with coaching. I am a huge Mark Richt supporter, think he’s a great guy, etc, but a head coach has a responsibility to his team to get them fired up and to let coaches go when they’re not performing. Also, to bench players who are not performing. Sometimes you can’t worry about hurting someone’s feelings.

Another reason that Georgia fans are so upset is that we’re not used to complete and total mediocrity. I heard a Tech fan say the other day that we’ve won at least 9 games a season for the last 9 years, so how can we complain about one bad year? Well, last year we won several games by the skin of our teeth–with Knowshon and Stafford, and now we see how much worse it is this year. We are Georgia, not Tech… that’s why a 6-6 season is NOT okay with us.

Frogger

As a Georgia fan I am getting used to mediocrity, just not complete and total mediocrity. We were an elite team from 1980 to 1984, other than that, we are mediocrity. I really hate to say it but it’s true. I’ve been waiting along time and have my hopes crused each year by not just getting beaten but getting crushed 2 or 3 games a year. I’m tired of saying, “wait till next year”. I don’t know whether to keep hoping or to just give up and accept the cards we are delt. It is a sad time in Dawgnation.

Dawg, I share the same feelings. It is not only how we have been losing, but also how we have been winning. Yeah, we went 10-3 last year, but we got our a$$ handed to us by the only 3 competent teams we played. We skidded by on teams like USCe, Vandy, UK, UT, and so on. We freaking struggled to put GSouth and Freakin CMich away. With three starting offensive NFL players on the team.

I have been a long time fan of the Dawgs as much of you and love Coach Richt , I do agree that we have some major problems . Let me ask each one of you one questions how many coaches out there have the winning percentage that CMR has during his tenure at UGA. Let’s not dump on him , I think that Coach Richt sometimes is too loyal similar to Tommy Tuberville . Folks Coach Richt has problems winning now and some people would like to see his head on platter but I have been a fan a long time and I remember another coach we had, and a couple of years before he won the 1980 National Championship alot of fans were calling for his head too !

My goodness at all the support you folks are giving CMR. First of all ,look at the payroll of the assistant coaches and most of them coached in the NFL. They gave CLK what he wanted. We are in the toughest league in the nation. We got spoiled by Stafford and Noshawn. We need to Improve our lineman both defensive and offensive. I was watching Florida and Lsu and they had some big boy’s. I believe CMR will get us back to contention in the near future, but not this year. What I’m saying though…even though I hate to admit it…is that like I said…we probably have some of the wrong assistant coaches…mainly the D-Coordinator, & maybe even the O-Coordinator as well. The problem is that Richt has seemed to have hung on to them too long. I kind of don’t blame him though for at least giving them this last season to hopefully turn things around. When you look at how fast Tubby ran through Coordinators at AU, & how they ended up being somewhat insconsistent as a result….w/ after last season’s AU debacle ended up costing him his job. He switched coches too much, & his decidions as far as that goes cost him his job last yr. I mean, we did actually win the SEC w/ Martinez as Coordinator in ‘05, & finsihed #2 in the nation 2 yrs. ago. Believe it or not, we have actually won w/ him. So, I can kind of understand him sticking it out at least this one more yr., bc sometimes the turnover will backfire on you. I’m just kind of hoping if things don’t get better…that Richt will consider making a change. We’ll see, but I wished people would give him the chance to see if he’ll do what it takes to win..after all…it had been 20 yrs. since we had won the SEC before he came along. Just don’t throw him under the bus yet. As far as the schedule comment goes that I read about us having such a tough schedule last yr…that’s true, but don’t forget that this yrs. schedules also brutally tough. I feel like, at least to this point that it’s one of the tougher shedules in the nation…as far as who we’ve had to play early. Last yr. we had Staff., Moreno, & MO Mass to help us have a pretty good yr….even though it wasn’t what everybody expected. We definitley have problems, but I think some of the other teams may not be as good as everyobdy thinks, bc of the inferior competition that they’ve played…at least to this point. Mainly some of the so called better teams left on our schedule. Not saying we’re going to win those games, but just trying to look at things positively, & that you never know. I mainly talking about AU & tech. Don’t get me wrong…I’m not saying they’re not good teams, but I’m just saying that just bc they have a better record than us…doen’t neccesraily mean those games are impossible for UGA to win, bc they have been beating up on patsies..for the most part. It does look scary, but who knows.

I agree with alot of the comments posted here about our Dawgs. We all know that our defense is horrible and we need changes now. If I were writing the checks I would call BVG and let him name his price but we all know that this is not possible. I personally believe that my sons recreation tackle football team could hang 21-35 pts on Georgias defense right now. My other complaint is how conservative we are in our play calling. CMR was never one to take a knee before the half at FSU so why are we doing it now? Why cant we be like Brian Kelly at Cinn and hang up 60-70 pts like he would do one his moms team? I think I speak for everyone when I say that the major thing that all Ga fans are wanting right now is 1. NEW DEFENSIVE COORD. 2. Logan Gray 3. Very aggressive offense. 4. That freshman HB #24 Ealey? in the backfield.

The UGA defense is coached so poorly, I actually can’t see how they would perform worse if they just fired Willy and let the seniors on defense call plays on the fly. If they only give up 35 points, it’ll already be a victory. Instead of Bobo, we could just have somebody randomly pick plays off of a video game like NCAA 2010 since Bobo just screws around with different ideas anyway, despite being the offensive coordinator for multiple years. I feel no remorse for millionaires doing worse jobs than their competitors at other schools!
