Damon Evans on UGA football: ‘I do have some concerns’

Georgia athletics director Damon Evans said today via e-mail that he does “have some concerns” about the state of his football program. Responding to an e-mail asking for his feelings regarding the Bulldogs’ season — they’re 3-3 for the first time since 1996 — Evans offered this:

“I do have some concerns about where we are at this point of the season. I know Coach [Mark] Richt, the assistant coaches, the players and our fans have the same concerns with our current record and the way we’ve been playing.

“Coach Richt and I have talked just as we do periodically throughout the season. I think his focus right now is on the immediate future, which is the Vanderbilt game and doing everything possible to prepare our team. That’s where it needs to be.

“Beyond that, I have total confidence that Coach Richt will properly evaluate our team, address concerns and prepare the right path that will direct us back into the position we all want to be in — competing for championships.”

As statements go, Evans’ would seem both pointed and nuanced. He didn’t pretend to happy with current events, but he didn’t issue a directive for immediate “significant improvement.”  (Vince Dooley, Evans’ predecessor, did that with Ray Goff back in 1995, which turned out to be Goff’s last season as coach.)

If you’re Mark Richt, Evans just said what you want to hear: That his boss has “total confidence” in him. But if you’re a Georgia fan, Evans just said what you want to hear as well: That certain “concerns” might need to be addressed and, put simply, that the University of Georgia expects more from its football team.

I think that with UGA coming off of a disappointing loss at UT, along with high, but unrealistic expectations given they lost their top 3 skill position players, 3-3 is exactly what they are right now.

If the team is able to rebound and finish 7-5, then all things considered, it’s not great, but it’s not awful. It’ll also mean that there will be some coaching changes. If they have back to back seasons of 6-6, 5-7, or something along those lines (which could happen; remember how Vandy gives them some issues), then all hell’s going to break loose.

Gotta say the Dawgs do take the game seriously and put their money where their mouth is. I have tickets to the GT vs. VT game that I bought for my brother (does not have real good sense) as a early Xmas present. He had eye surgury and now can not drive at nite and have offerED the ticket on face book TO friends with no response while looking for a driver to also drive him. I now looked at GT athletics web site and still the game is not sold out. IF UGA had only one loss right now and playing a caliber team we could sell out Sanford Stadium 3 times over. So Dawgs fans do not fret all is not loss. We have the fan base who supports our team and we will prevail! Go Dawgs!

Georgia will never win a Championship under Head Coach Mark Richt (He’s too soft and he has no control over his players). Urban Meyer, Pete Carroll, Les Miles, and Nick Saban all show intense emotions on the sideline and Mark Richt just doesn’t have that. He’s a good coach but he is not a good fit for Georgia.

I know from first hand experience, that Coach Richt is loosing the recruiting battle. I have a son that is 2 years out of a 7AAAAA high school that lost only 5 games during his 4 years on the team. This team was loaded with talent, 2 kids had NFL pedigrees! It was exciting and fun to see all the head coaches from all the major universities, Pete Carroll, Nick Saban, Meyer, Tubberville almost every practice had some college coaches attend. Guess what? No Mark Richt he sent Bobo instead! In those 4 years only 1 player signed with Georgia, Nick Saban took 3, Pete Carroll took 1, Ralph Freigen took 1 the A+ difference makers that are capable of changing a game are going out of state! Georgia recruits and signs mostly B+ players simply because coach Richt wants to recruit from his office in Athens! I don’t know exactly what Nick Saban is doing, but he’s kicking every body’s butt when it comes to recruiting, they have A+ players sitting on the bench waiting on a chance to play!

Joe Cox if your serious about coaching you need to transfer to Alabama today!!

I just want to say one hell of an excellent post. I was saying the same thing 2 days ago. My rant an tirade for CMR to be fired is simple. It is 2 fold. One he is a BS recruiter. I am tired of hearing just how great he is as a recruiter. UF is coming into GA and taking the real recruits. Also, whatever is leftover, UA is grabbing. And Don’t forget, UT and AUB + USCe have always done well in GA. When CMR first arrived he put a fence around GA’s Blue Chippers. Not so much anymore. We now have 5STAR players going to USA and God Forbid Stanford, but enough about the recruiting. Lets focus on the coaching, or there lack of.

CMR the greatest of God’s creations of a HC decised one day to promote not one but 2 unprepared and inexperienced asst Coaches to be our OC and DC. We have a STC that everyone hates. A LB coach who has deterioated our so called 5 STAR LBs, a Strength and conditioning Coach who apparrently does nothing, and OH YES the best part… A WR coaching RBs,and a RB coaching WRs. We also have an OL coach who worked a one year miracle last year. Now, who is responsible for building this staff, and placing each individual in their role?

Let’s face it, we have been slowly sliding down hill since Pollack and Greene have left. But guess what? They were recruited and signed by… Jim Donnan. What has the GREAT CMR done with his own recruits? There are the reasons such as BVG leaving. The shame of it all is the fact that we are perenial TOP 10 in recruiting, and these recruits are suffering from a lack of coaching and teaching. But hold on a minute. We are not recruiting 5STAR football players. No we are recruiting 5STAR atheletes. And we are doing this with noone capable of coaching and teaching these atheletes to be football players.

Simply put, what is the FREAKIN deal? He hands over OC duties to be a full time HC. What the heck does CMR do during a game? A week? Hell at all?

I have tried to rationalize. Tried to figure out what the deal is. I have tried to alibi Bobo out, hell CWM too. The only one left to blame is CMR. After all, he is the boss. That is where the buck stops. The responsibility of the dire shape this program is in.. lays at his feet.

How does CMR overcome the poor decision he has made? CMR deserves to be the HC of Tim Tebow. It is a shame though that Tebow went to the devil because he knew the odds of winning were a helluva lot better.

Mr. Evans,

Thank you for making a statement about our team and its problems. I have full faith in you in ensuring that CMR makes some tough decisions regarding a couple of his friends at the end of this season. I just believe that he has allowed his personal feelings get in the way of making good decisions for our football team. Please monitor this situation very closely as CMR does report in to you and you have the final say about major decisions regarding all of our teams. CMR, I will keep you in my prayers, and I hope you are able to turn things around very quickly. I know that you are a great man and a good coach with a lot of upside. I would love to see you stick around for the next 20 years, but you have got to surround yourself with winners and I am not so sure about several of your assistants. I too am a UGA fan for life, and I wish you and all of our UGA sports programs the very best.

One last thing. I don’t know about everyone else in the DAWG nation, but I support the players; I just don’t support the Coaching staff. It is a shame that AJ Green like Staff and Moreno will be just a footnote in UGA history. Those 3 are the best talents we have had at UGA since #34.

I’m not sure that I agree that Gardner’s part of the problem, bc he was one of the ones that was arround when things were going good. Now, we haven’t been as consisted since BVG left…that much is obvious. There’s no way to get every single big time player in the state, bc there are way too many. RGs actually one of the main ones that helped us keep the GA talent back when we were starting to beat Tenn. Some people make the mistake of thinking that if we struggle…that that means we must not be recruiting very well. If you kept up w/ the ranking…you would know that’s not the case. I know rankings aren’t always right, but nobody can convince me that the problem at UGA is a lack of talent. The only difference I can see between UGA recently, is that we have different O & D-Coordinators. That, along w/ the fact that there are several other teams that we were superior to…that went out & got new head coaches when they were struggling, & therefore have been able to pass us in the process as far as having success on the field.

aarh

I just think sometimes it’s a matter of having the right coordinators, & you can’t always blame everybody when things are going bad. Just look at AU if you want an ex. Remember when they were supposed to be good when they had J. campbell, Cadillac, R. Brown., but Petrino left & they didn’t some close to measuring up to expectations, & they nearly ran Tubby off. What happened the next yr. AU hired a new coordinator, Al Borges, & AU went undefeated. A lot of teams are loaded w/ talent, but good coaching all the way from the top to the bottom makes the difference. When Richt was calling the plays & we had BVG..we were more consistent, but more recently….not so much.

aarh, this is so totally a different situation than AUB. We actually have coaches who don’ t coach, not players who don’t fit a system. I agree with you about the “No lack of talent.”. OK, if we ahve the talent then what is the problem? Let’s look at the basics. Offense first.
We have no run game. I know our OL sucks. But they really don’t pass protect well eithe; at least not against good defenses. While Cox may suck, it’s not like he has alot going for him. It is screen, screen, screen, then hit AJ up the field.
Defesive, we have no pass rush. No Geno or Owens are bailing us out. Our LB play is horrible with the coaching we have. Curran make plays on pure atheletic ability; not because of scheme. Our DBs suck the worst. Why? Because our DB coach is in over his head with the DC position.
STS, while Butler has been phenoninal, and the kicker Walsh has been just short of excellent, we have no kick coverage, and really no punt coverage. On returns (punt) we rush but don’t set up a return. On KOs we get BS penalties after BS penalties that keep us from being consistent.
Now we agree on the coaches and the coordinators, but who is in charge of them? Who put these extremely talanted individuals in their role to coach and teach these fine young foo… no.. atheletes? CMR, that’s who. And that is why we are the most overrated team in Collage Football. That’s who.

What about Marvin Sanders (formerly UNC DC) or Everett Withers (current UNC DC)? Both seem to be doing a good job and have coached under some pretty good head coaches. Withers even coached with the TN Titans for several years. UNC has a pretty good defense (bad offense) and is ranked near the top in nearly all categories.

What concerns do you address, Coach Richt ?

It is total, widespread, complete, utter, collective, complete failure of a “coaching staff” of college roommates and buddies of Coach Richt to teach our kids a damn thing in every phase of the game of football.

Damon Evans was recruited to UGA to play football by Vincent Dooley, himself back in the 1980s.

Address the concerns ?

What concerns Damon Evans ?

17-19 LOSING record against what ended up Final AP Poll Top 25 teams in the 8 years and 6 games of this “coaching staff” assembled by Coach Richt.

15-16 LOSING record against LSU, Auburn, Florida and Tennessee.

7 LOSSES in 8 years and a half against teams who ended up NOT RANKED in the Final AP Poll Top 25.

We cannot beat the teams we are supposed to beat, and lose to 1 a year every year for 8 years and a half now, and counting.

We cannot beat the Final AP Poll Top 25 teams, either.

We are NOT better than Florida.

We are NOT better than LSU.

We are NOT better than Auburn.

We are NOT better than the vols.

In fact, we also have LOSING RECORD against LSU, Auburn, Florida and Tennessee at 15 wins and 16 losses against these 4, 2 from the East and 2 from the West.

We are headed no where as a football program.

We saw fit to give this assemblage of coaches on Coach Richt’s “coaching staff” huge raises this Summer.

As if, by giving them raises to the equivalent of other Coaching Staffs in The SEC and elsewhere, this “coaching staff” of Coach Richt would somehow gain legitimacy by their huge raises.

While others surround themselves with Coaches who are in fact BETTER than their head coach in their area of expertise and able to garner their school RECRUITS who are NFL caliber by all measures thereof, we get ONLY THOSE RECRUITS in this state and beyond who just like all of us fans are Bulldogs by God.

Jon Fabris coached linebackers for the Cleveland Browns 1 year in the year 2000.

That’s it.

The sum total of all the coaches on Coach Richt’s “coaching staff” including himself, who have coached even 1 day in the NFL.

1 year by 1 “coach” and he has NEVER COACHED LINEBACKERS for Coach Richt.

13 Georgia Bulldogs’ “coaches” 1 of whom has coached 1 year in the NFL and he is NOT coaching the position he coached in the NFL and never has for Coach Richt.

Mike Bobo is his Offensive Coordinator. He has never had this job and has not proven himself at all, now has he ?

Bryan McClendon is a Wide Receiver. We have a wide receiver coaching running backs. Is there any wonder no one can find a hole, or hold on to the football ?

The 2009 Media Guide does NOT even mention who coaches Special Teams. Be assured NONE have ever coached or played the position they are coaching.

Tony Ball is a RUNNING BACK. Instead, he is coaching wide receivers. Does HE get credit for AJ Green or the BLAME for Marlon Brown ?

Jon Fabris is a Quarterback and then a Defensive Back. Instead, here he is coaching Defensive Ends. What Defensive Ends ? There aren’t any and there are NONE being recruited. Duh.

John Jancek is a Defensive Lineman. Instead, here he is coaching Linebackers. Excuse me ?

John Lilly is a Quarterback and Wide Receiver. Instead, here he is coaching Tight Ends. All the talent we have provided him in recruiting on this roster and he had 0 tight ends catch more than 5 passes grand total all season long last year. Gave him 2 more this year of NFL caliber. What has he done with them ? I ask you ?

Willie Martinez is a Quarterback and Defensive Back. Instead, he is the Defensive Coordinator until Coach Richt DEMOTED him this Summer and PROMOTED John Jancek to CO-DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR. What is this, pray tell ?

JOHN EASON is the Director of FOOTBALL OPERATIONS ? Excuse me. We fired the sucker I thought for failure as WIDE RECEIVERS COACH with everyone dropping passes, failing to block downfield, and poor route-running. Coach Richt, wanting to be a nice guy for his buddy JOHN EASON, made him DIRECTOR OF FOOTBALL OPERATIONS. If you can’t coach, get PROMOTED.

This is where we are at.

(1) LOSING RECORD of 15-16 in the 8 plus years against LSU, Auburn, Florida and Tennessee – 2 from the East and 2 from the West.

(2) LOSING RECORD of 17-19 against in fact Final AP Poll Top 25 teams in the 8 plus years.

(3) LOSING RECORD of now 7 LOSSES to teams NOT RANKED in the Final AP Poll Top 25 the year we LOST to them in the 8 plus years, averaging do this 1 time EVERY YEAR.

(4) In Summary, we cannot beat the Top 25 teams but LOSE TO THEM, can’t beat the NOT RANKED TEAMS but LOSE TO THEM TOO, and find we have a LOSING RECORD against LSU, Florida, Auburn and Tennessee at 15-16 against those 4.

Who the frig is he beating ?

Who are you fooling yourself he is beating ?

The facts are the facts, and this isn’t just this year – this is the entire time Coach Richt has assembled his “coaching staff” since he got here December 20, 2000. Coach Richt is OVER HIS HEAD in hiring a Coaching Staff. He has proven that.

So, Damon Evans, what are you going to do ? Hire a Coaching Staff for Coach Richt ?

I am concerned about Coach Richt’s attitude toward penalties. I know they have lost several ballgames due to penalties. Coach Rich lets the players get away with excessive penalties because ” He does not want to take away their aggressiveness”, What about discipline? Aggressiveness with discipline wins ball games. The other teams Georgia plays play with more aggressiveness, with more discipline and fewer penalties. They are the ones winning ball games. rj

It was a warning sign of developing problems last year when we could not play with Bama & Fla even with our NFL Talent on offense. The defense has been clearly declining each year for several years. Now it’s easy for almost anyone to see the direction this program is currently going. I’m afraid to hire the right staff, Richt would need a consultant. Vandy is calling for a blackout for this weekends game. They are fixing to give us dogs a lesson in how to do a blackout. All they need to do is fake to the running back and bootleg and they will have receivers wide open. How many times do you have to run a play before we can pick up on it ?? Willie didn’t have a clue nor did CMR! Sick of where we are and where we are headed. We are on a decline and we are picking up speed. I love the Dogs but hate the lack of coaching and lack of intensity !! these new coaches are already past the level of UGA . Did anyone see lane kiffins message to Vol nation ? He vowed never to lose to UGA as long as he is head coach. Tough words. Never hear anything from Richt like that, never will. We need change! Or else we will have the same results.

Criticizing the coach is the beginning of the end. True fans just cheer their team when they get down. That said…Damon Evans started arguing for a raise for Richt a few years back. That being said, the time for changes is after the year and this year it has to happen. To everyone calling for Logan Gray: 1) I agree he needs to play; and 2) it won’t make a damn bit of difference if we cannot run the ball. 22 rushing attempts against UT – that is not UGA football.

As an outside observer who had to go through this same scenario with Mike Hamilton and Phil Fulmer at UT, it appears from my point of view that Evans is simply taking cues from the book, “How to Succeed in Politics Without Showing Your Cards.” Put an American flag behind him and the Presidential Seal in front of him and he could sit in the Oval. Just remembe, Mr. Evans, unless you’ve already got a plan in place you shouldn’t be floating trial balloons to gauge public interest.

Loyalty and trust are as good as it gets. Marriages missing these virtures eventually dissolve because the journey is long a tough. Football coaching staffs are a marriage requiring much support and encouragement regardless where they are located. CMR is a good leader and has given us a good program that includes success, integrity and goodness. He has given the benefit of the doubt to his staff which most of us would love to receive in our own situations. Would you trade CMR’s winning record with anyone? Does he know how to win? Was he an experienced winner before he came to Athens? Should he disrupt this season with a bunch of changes? ABSOLUTELY NOT! Let’s get back to supporting our team and and be encouragers. Where would you get people at mid season to step in and wave a magic wand. Such a move would be disasterous. Let’s get a grip and do our part – be supportive and keep a cool head and let CMR and DE evaluate at the appropriate time. Let us display the class act that we are. GO DAWGS.

This poor football season is an indictment of most of the UGA men’s sports as a whole. This is a much bigger problem that’s been brewing for a long time. It didn’t deteriorate overnight, so the fix won’t be quick.

The University needs to look long and hard up and down the food chain, from the Assistant Coaches all the way up to the AD. First and foremost, Martinez, Bobo, and Fabris all need to go at the end of the season. Promise recruits (and keep that promise) that UGA is truly committed to excellence. Show them you are serious by making wholesale changes. If you don’t your credibility for many years is shot. If things don’t improve next year with new assistants (and maybe some coordinators), then Richt needs to be shown the door. Anything short of this is unacceptable, and donor money should cease.

The football program specifically has been in decline and had it not been for some seriously motivated and talented players, the Dawgs would have been in this position several years ago. Hire the best that money can buy, and make the coaches and players be held accountable for their actions. Bring back discipline (no Souja Boy dancing on the sidelines, stop the thug mentality, cut or hide the dreadlocks, etc.- you get the picture). Project a professional, focused, winning attitude, and the rest will follow. Punish players who do not meet standards on and off the field.

Mark Richt is a fine man and a committed Christian. No one faults him for that- as a matter of fact, that is to be admired and emulated. That said, one has to question his abilities as a Head Coach should be called into question. Clock management, inability to make the tough staffing decisions, and other issues have been problematic. Maybe the SEC and UGA isn’t the place for him. Nothing personal- this is serious business. Look at the penalty stats while he was at FSU to see this was a problem he brought with him from Tallahassee. Previous history is an indicator of future performance……….

Not being a Georgia Bulldog fan, I’m probably not the best guy to offer an opinion on the plight of the current team; however, I am gonna offer one. Year, after year, after year, UGA has one of the top recruiting classes (per the supposedly experts in the field of judging talent) and these four and five star athletes never quite live up to expectations in terms of championships, fan appreciation, etc. The problem is, I think, is a combination of things that actually compliment (maybe not the best word) each other. These players that were recruited are all very, very good athletes and they know it and most have been working since they knew they had a talent for football to be the best so they could spend their post college years making a gazillion dollars. They do everything they can to make themselves look good and hardly any have ever heard, or much less intend to develop, a team attitude or spirit. Now, what compliments that is the coaches……either they don’t know how to coach these star athletes or they don’t want to mess with the psych of the prima donnas and Marc Richt is probably the worst of all…….he’s not mean enough……he needs to show some toughness on the field, not only to the players on the field but to the coaches also. Also, these players are not tough enough to meet the expectations that have been placed on them…..GO BEES :)

Coaching changes? Hold on a minute, Bobo has Georgia ranked #97 in total offense, scoring 25.83 points per game. Now Willie is doing a much better, he has Georgia ranked # 75 in total defense, but there is still a problem, Georgia giving up 30.67 points
per game. It’s hard to have winning record when you give up more than you score. But don’t despair, Georgia does have a top 10 category #2 in penalties per game and #5 in
penalties yards per game out of 120 major colleges.

Now the Gators on the other hand are #6 total offense, scoring 39 points per game
and #1 in total defense giving up 6.4 points per game. Seems to me Richt has along way to go before Georgia will be good enough to even think about conference Championship or a National Title. Does Richt have any assistance coaches that are so good that he couldn’t do better by starting over with a completely new staff? I think he could, but he is such a nice guy, I’m not sure he can.

I realize none of these Dawg fans will admit it, but there are a lot of parallels between this UGA team and the GT teams that Calvin Johnson played on under Sham Gailey. AJ Green is playing the role of Calvin Johnson, the stud receiver on an otherwise irrelevant team. And Mark Richt is playing the role of Sham Gailey, the “aw shucks” mild-mannered nice guy coach. Joe Cox is UGA’s version of Reggie Ball, that underachieving QB that the coaches stick with for some godforsaken reason.

I miss the way UGA played in years past. They had a swagger, played hard and showed a lot of heart. They jumped around and ran like someone had set their silver britches on fire. The players cheered and showed support for their teammates during the game. The coaches acted like they still had a heartbeat. Now everyone from the coaching staff to the players act like they were given a date rape drug prior to the game. The looks on the coaching staffs faces during a game is like that of a wide eyed baby chicken that just popped its head out of the egg and is seeing the world for the first time. The SEC is two teams deep? Before Saturday’s games we had 3 of the top 4 rated teams. LSU got beat by #1 UF. How “deep” is the big bad ACC (almost competitive conference)? BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

He’s your Daddy, too, Grinch. You don’t even believe the crap you write. LSU is worthless this year. Case in point: They only beat you by a TD whereas hapless UT destroyed the Dawgs.

Go to cnnsi.com and read what the whole country realizes except for you: that the SEC is a 2 team race. At least the ACC is more balanced.

And by the way, the Bulldogs are irrelevant.

GaGator – exactly. That’s what has most of the disgruntled UGA fans up in arms. This isn’t a new development. Rather, it’s been going on for years and still no changes.

Here is the problem with knocking Mark Bradley. He is probably the only one on the AJC staff that knows what he is talking about. So trash him, it should make you feel better about the dawgs.

BWHAHAHAHAHAHAH is an appropriate comment from a Georgia fan, Grinch. Crying like a bunch of babies. How bout them Dawgs? How BOUT them Dawgs?

[...] AD Damon Evans has opened up about the state of the Bulldogs’ football program in an email that’s been posted by Mark Bradley of The AJC.“I do have some concerns [...]

I think the reason Georgia sucks so bad is because of that excessive celebration penalty on AJ Green. That is the reason you guys got hammered by Tennessee. Why did everybody stop talking about that BS penalty? Its just not fair.

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!! Your third grade education is showing. So your whole point is that “worthless” LSU only beat us by 7? Okay, then UF beat LSU by 10. Using your sophisticated math, then UF will beat us by 17. But let’s put it closer to home. Miami beat you by 14, and VT beat Miami by 24. Using your Jethro Bodine logic, VT will beat you by 38 points. BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!! Yeah, that’s the ticket.

I’m a little tired of people and journalists all talking/writing about how UGA is becoming tired of their coaching staff and team. This “unrest among the fans” seems more to me like a matter of perception. Obviously the people who are more likely to post on these forums are those who are upset. Obviously journalists want to write a compelling story, and “fans turning on their coach” obviously gets a few hits. However, I know that most of my fellow UGA fans and alumni that I speak to personally STILL LOVE OUR TEAM AND SUPPORT OUR COACH. I think we need some more positive energy working here. Let’s keep things in perspective. If you support our team and our coach, LET’S HEAR IT.
