Tallahassee – The PA system at Doak Campbell Stadium hasn’t cranked up yet, but this has the makings of a big day/night for the Institute sometimes sneeringly called the North Avenue Trade School. Georgia Tech will enter here with the best chance it has ever had to beat Florida State in the state in the Florida. And, not that Tech fans ever pay much attention to that college in Clarke County, but …
Georgia got trampled in Knoxville.
Win tonight and the Jackets don’t just set up a game for the ACC Coastal lead next week at Bobby Dodd Stadium; they also stamp themselves, rather clearly, as the best program in Georgia. The hated Bulldogs are 3-3 for the first time under Mark Richt; the Jackets would be 5-1 if they beat the Seminoles.
And they should beat the Seminoles. FSU is areel. The first word in the headline of the stadium edition of the Tallahassee Democrat was “distractions.” The two stories inside the wraparound bore these headlines: “Is there any way this can end well for FSU, Bowden?” and “Think you have TK’s [T.K. Wetherell is the school president] for Bowden figured out?”
In sum, nobody was talking about the nation’s No. 22 team. (That would be Tech.) Everybody remains abuzz about Bobby Bowden, who seems to be entering the final stages of a long and distinguished career in a most unseemly way. Everybody, it seems, wants him to go. Everybody except him.
And that’s where we are, sports fans, at 5:45 p.m. The sun is shining, but thunderstorms are predicted for the evening. (In case you haven’t heard, it rains sometimes in Florida.) Rain might well inhibit Paul Johnson’s stylized offense — harder to handle a wet ball — and might well make for a 13-10 flub-fest that FSU could luck up and win. But I think it’d take a lot of luck for the ‘Noles to prevail tonight. And I think Papa Bowden ran out of luck about a decade ago.
Perhaps for better but probably for worse, I’ll be here all evening to offer insights (not likely) and asides (possibly) on this game and anything else you’d like to discuss. I hear another Florida team is playing tonight, too. I hear it’s raining over in Louisiana. I hear Tebow might or might not play. If I hear anything else, I’ll advise forthwith.
