Michael Vick gets a reality show, but hold the outrage
The Los Angeles Times reports that Michael Vick will star in a reality series on BET, only it really won’t be a reality series. Writes Greg Braxton:
“Producers of the Vick series emphasized the program should be considered a docu-series — not a typical reality show like VH-1’s ‘The T.O. Show,’ which revels in the excesses of its flamboyant star, wide receiver Terrell Owens. The tone of Vick’s show, say producers, will be serious and somber as it focuses on his personal struggles since his release, including the strains on his relationships with his fiancée, Kijafa Frink, and his children. It will also revisit the federal prison in Leavenworth, Kan., where Vick spent 1 1/2 years behind bars and the Virginia property where he ran and financed a dogfighting ring.”
The eight-part series, Braxton reports, is scheduled to air next year and is being financed in part by MV7, Vick’s production company. And it has, you should know, already drawn the boilerplate complaint from our pals at PETA. From a spokesman: “People who abuse animals don’t deserve to be rewarded.”
But I say everyone should just hold his/her figurative horses. (”Figurative” because I don’t want PETA mad at me.) I have a prediction, and we know how good I am at predicting, don’t we?
My prediction: Nobody will watch it.
Nobody will watch because — let’s face it — we don’t want to see “serious and somber” in our reality TV. We want to see pseudo-celebrities do silly things. We want to see the Kardashians go shopping . We want to see Kate humiliate Jon on-camera. (Though that rat deserves it.) We don’t want real reality; we want to escape our own personal too-real reality.
Vick to Braxton: “What I want to do is change the perception of me. I am a human being. I’ve made some mistakes in the past, and I wish it had never happened. But it’s not about how you fall, but about how you pick yourself up.”
Not to be totally insensitive, but that sounds far too educational and perhaps even uplifting to make for what is known as Good TV. Because Good TV is fluff. Good TV is junk. Good TV is worthless.
I am, as you might have gathered, not a fan of TV in any manifestation. Except for Kate. I like Kate.

People of all demographics watch BET, although the percentages vary. Just because I like Sinatra and Tom Jones and Blues and Jazz and Rock and Classical doesn’t mean I can’t enjoy Rap and Hip-Hop.
Better to enjoy more things than less things — more options — and I like me some options, as has been pointed out by a few former girlfriends.
My favorite BET show was “Hell Date.” Favorite video was “Tip Drill” by Nelly. Show I never ever watched on BET was Robert Tilton’s “Success-N-Life.” Guy creeps me out.

you work for a newspaper yet you fail to realize that vick was never charged with killing dogs, torturing dogs, executing, etc by the feds because killing, torturing a dog in VA is not a federal crime. It is a misdemeanor in VA.
Do you understand that Vick served jail time for gambling? Why are you talking about dogs being killed? The GA lottery that funds the Hope Scholarship is gambling.

I’ve been reading over the various comments here and have to say, this is pretty much the lowest I’ve seen people stoop to on these forums. I have never in my life seen an athlete or his actions polarize a community the way Michael Vick has, but based on some of the comments being thrown about here, I think the root problem goes way deeper than that; Abraham Lincoln once stated that a house divided against itself cannot stand. But we’re not merely divided, America; we’re fragmented.
The so-called “political correctness” that has been force-fed upon US citizens since the Clinton administration has only served to sharpen the rifts between black and white (or Asian or whatever), rich and poor, men and women, parents and kids, young and old, you name it; please tell me ONE WAY our society has improved in that span of time. People are wound so tight holding back their true feelings on a day-to-day basis that when a topic such as this comes up in these or any other forums or boards and they have an opportunity to vent, the hate and malicious intent is palpable.
Rather than one nation under God, we are many nations under one flag, each struggling for whatever it can get. The melting pot that we once prided ourselves in being has come home to roost; there’s wisdom in the old addage “good fences make good neighbors”, but now that a host of different cultures and lifestyles are sitting in each others’ back pockets, folks are beginning to realize that their identity as individuals is being lost, drowned out (or shouted down). The freedoms that we took for granted are being cannibalized one by one, and when your vote no longer matters what else is left to you? Where will you go? There are no more “Americas” left out there to run to, folks.
Our nation has forsaken godly convictions and morals for materialistic, greedy priorities; we abhor tradition and ridicule innocence; our society has become a place where parents must constantly be on guard for negative influences on their kids (and the biggest problem is that the government-run public school systems have those kids seven or eight hours a day). The gods we’ve set up in place of the Real One are celebrities and sports figures who lead lives every bit as promiscuous, excessive, and amoral as the Greek and Roman pantheons. Rather than families, we want our own lives and happiness at any cost; Hitler, Stalin, and Mao Tse Tung killed roughly 46 million over political maneuvering and ethnic hatred, but we’ve got them all beat here in the Land of the Free. Fifty million babies murdered under the protection of the federal government for the sake of the convenience of their parents not to have to live with the consequences of their actions (and here we all are arguing over a guy who killed dogs for fun; kind of calling the kettle black, is it not?).
It probably won’t make a lick of difference what I or anyone else says here, but our days of God’s protection and blessings are nearing an end (for the ten percent of you drawing unemployment right about now, expect more company over the next few years…A LOT MORE. God’s only tapped us on the shoulder so far. Unless America repents of its wickedness (that ESPECIALLY includes folks who profess the Name of Christ) and returns to God, we’re done for, and I believe much sooner than we ever thought would happen. The nation that forgets God shall be turned into hell, the Bible promises. And right now America sure ain’t looking much like Heaven, is it?

I agree that my post was lengthy, but then the issues facing our nation are much deeper and more intertwined than can be stated in a nice, short paragraph or two. I believe that at their core they are spiritual issues, not merely political or racial. Sorry to get worked up like I did, but I hate to see things like this happening in America.
