Foxborough, Mass. — Before I make this sound like a Peter King coffee nerd post, let me stipulate: I do not drink coffee. As a rule, I do not go to Starbucks. But I went this morning because I was given a $10 SBUX gift card by the nice folks at the Marriott at Copley Square. So I used it on green tea, a low-fat slice of bread and a banana. And when I turned to leave, I saw …

Dan Reeves.

I said hello. I also said, “I remember covering one of your teams up here. I also remember you personally inventing the Dirty Bird that day.”

He laughed. “Long time ago,” he said. And it was.

It was Nov. 8, 1998. The Falcons came to New England 6-2 but still largely unloved back in the A-T-L and largely unproven in the eyes of the national media. They came to the old stadium off  Route 1 and won 41-10, and O.J. Santiago — not Dan Reeves — unveiled the Dirty Bird in the end zone that afternoon.

And I remember standing nearby as the Patriots’ coach exited the field to a heavily accented chorus of boos and more than one hurled cup. The coach’s name: Pete Carroll.

The Falcons beat the 49ers in Atlanta the next week at a time the Niners were considered the power in the NFC West, and at his Monday press conference I asked Reeves: “Let me preface this by saying I’ve never before asked this question of any Falcons coach, but is this a Super Bowl team?”

Lo and behold, it turned out to be. Now I’m not saying the Falcons will have stamped their visas to Miami — yes, the next Super Bowl is in the same town as the site as Eugene Robinson’s arrest — if they win today, but winning against Belichick and Brady on the road would be the strongest sign yet that these Birds are bona fide.

Let the record show, however, that both Boston papers pick the Pats. The Globe has it 27-21, the Herald 27-20. A month ago, this idiot correspondent picked New England to win 41-14, but that was at a time when the Falcons’ defense seemed suspect and when I was operating on the premise, which seems pretty flawed already, that the team would start the season slowly.

And I still kind of think New England will prevail. But the Pats are up to their usual injury-list chicanery, listing Randy Moss as questionable late Friday, so there’s that to ponder. But Reeves is here doing the game on radio, and if O.J. Santiago shows up in a golf cart, I’m changing my pick and going with the Birds.

Weather update: Yesterday was gorgeous. There was such a crowd of walkers around Copley Square you’d have thought it was Patriots Day — I was here for that festive Boston event during the NBA playoffs in 2008 — but it wasn’t. It was simply one of those fall New England days of which postcards are made.

Today, by way of contrast, is less picturesque. It has been raining, and it’s supposed to rain more this afternoon. Traffic is already horrible on Route 1 — this is one of those one-way-in stadiums, situated 40 minutes south of Boston — and esteemed colleague D. Orlando Ledbetter left at 8:30 a.m. Had we left at 9:30, we’d still be idling in Walpole.

And the thinking is that a wet track favors the visitors. Because they have Michael Turner, and the Pats don’t seem to have a running game. So file that away.

Media event: You’d think every card-carrying media type would be in Philadelphia today — and please note this is the first I’ve mentioned that game — but the seating manifest indicates that Michael Silver of Yahoo! Sports, Albert Breer of Sporting News Today and Damon Hack of Sports Illustrated are coming here, and I’ve already seen John Clayton of ESPN. So I guess this is itself a pretty big game.

And stop back often! This will be another in our series of live chats, which have come to be the highlight of every week. (At least for me.) I’ll be here until the final horn or Belichick chooses to run off the field in a big fat huff, whichever comes first.

Waiting on the Birds. Waiting, and waiting, and waiting……………

Shame they let Dan Reeves go, when he was shaping Vick to be a darn good QB, only to hire an idiot, who hired an idiot, and another idiot, and so on, and so on,and so on………………………………….

I was at the SD-ATL preseason game when the secondary looked awful. They’ve come a long way in that short time. I myself thought the Patriots would beat the Falcons pretty easily but now I think the Falcons have a good opportunity to knock off Tom Brady and the Patriots.

Mark, Randy Moss and Wes Welker were listed as questionable earlier this week. Any updates?

Mark,

Don’t go to sleep on the Pats running game. They were 6th in the league last year and only trailed the Falcons by about 10 yds /gm. And to THAT they’ve added Fred Taylor.

We didn’t exactly stone the Panthers run game. Color me concerned.

I haven’t seen O.J. Santiago for a long time, Birddawg. If he shows up, I’ll take a picture.

By the way, I remember O.J. making a huge catch in the epic comeback in the Metrodome. I know a lot of folks ripped him for having less than sticky hands, but he caught a few in his time.

Not to sidetrack the thread, but what did u think about the GA/ASU game? As a lifelong Dawg fan, I’m about to get fed up with all the negativity from the lunatic fringe, I think my seats are located in the middle of that group in the South Stands. The D looked like what we expected, offense sputtered, and we continue to kill ourselves with turnovers on the wrong side of the field!
I think the Birds get to Brady, play control and take measured shots down the field, Atlanta 26, Pats 17

David

Possibly no Welker and possibly no Moss? I’d love it to rain and have the Pats depend on Maroney, Morris, and Faulk — I don’t hold our defense in high regards, but I think they can manage to suffocate a team handing off to a guy that’s been injured since he entered the league, and a couple of other running backs whose combined age is almost 70.

Feeling good about this game. There’s that part of me that’s scared Brady will find his mojo again, but the other part me wonders if he cares as much anymore; he’s been out for a year, he’s married, he’s got his second child on the way, and I think he may realize he’s already stamped his place in the NFL annals.

Anyway, go Falcons (or Dirty Birds). Carolina and Miami are no slouches, but this game will be the barometer in which to measure the Falcons. Lert’s get a win this week. Falcons 24, Pats 20

BTW Mark, I was wary of your preseason projection of UGA at 8-4. I am not any longer. This is not a bad team, nor is it a particularly good team. Now, I’d have taken 3-1 against this schedule, especially with the loss being to OK state. However, the way we’ve done it is very concerning. Either the defense plays good and the offense doesn’t, or vice versa. That is the trademark of an average team.

I think they’ll pull it together, it’s just a matter of time, remember 2007? That arse spanking in Tennessee made it look like we’d maybe go 6-6. I’m just sick of the impatience of some of our fan base, as a high school coach, I’m learning from Richt and company how to deal with that crap!

Sorry for the UGA posts, will stick with the Birds now. Mark, do you think the Falcons wish they had kept Thomas Brown now? Snelling’s tough but I don’t think he’s the runner TB is. JS is a better blocker/smashing runner but I think TB, especially with Norwood dinged up, would have been a real nice change of pace/size/speed.

I’m not impatient 7mm. I think UGA is still in great shape as a program moving towards the next few years. But I also think there is a very real chance that this team would be 0-4 without AJ Green. Brandon from Warner Robins-Yes AJ is better than both of those guys. If I had to compare the 3 top WR’s in college to 3 top pros

Julio Jones-Terrell Owens-But Julio has better hands. Same build…same strength Super Strong breaking tackles
AJ Green-Calvin Johnson/Randy Moss-Smaller/Speed wise RM is faster I think I’m not sure/All have long strides…. make crazy grabs and are superbly gifted at postitioning their body for the grab
Bryant-Anquan Bolden-Every bit their weight and strength……fearless over the middle…..and speed to burn

Sorry for the spelling and sorry for getting off subject. Oh yeah with out AJ UGA would have lost that game last night. Cox threw up a prayer to the best player on the field and AJ saved the game with the block and the catch.

crackbaby

The hype around Brady and the Pats is misguided. The Pats won’t make the playoffs this year unless the AFC East goes in the tank. New England is no longer a dynasty. They should be 0-2. They may still be the smartest team in the league, but definitely not the best. The Bills loss in the opener was due to player stupidity (one guy runs a kickoff out of the end zone and fumbles when the hands team is on the field). Marty Schottenheimer’s Chargers loss to the Pats in the playoffs two years ago was enabled by several idiotic plays by his players.

Falcons, if they are indeed bound for greatness, should win today on the road and possibly win big. Maybe give up a couple big pass plays to Brady and Moss or the T.E. Falsons should shut down the run, then pressure Brady. Balanced attack by the Birds should offer Ryan opportunities for big pass plays. If Mattie Ice can throw the deep ball with accuracy (his arm strength seems iffy), this game is going to be a lot of fun.

Kick is good. That was a great drive that fizzled on a weird play. I’m not sure if Ryan was looking for Finneran or Gonzalez on third down. They kind of ran together. Finneran slipped. Gonzo got impeded by his defender. Wanted interference. Wasn’t called.

Not the hit on the pass that was challenged. The hit on the previous pass attempt. It was late and then there was a LOT of extra-curricular activity. So much that it got Ryan a little steam so that he took a swipe at the def player. Pay attention.

The WR-combination of Jenkins and White are too big and slow… Larent Robinson was fast, and had quick-strike capability downfield for Ryan (before Dimitroff traded him to The Rams). Douglass was not faster than a high 4.4 in the 40. His main attribute was more about quickness in zone-coverages.

The Falcons staff wanting big WRs for run-blocking is fine, but someone has to be able to break a long score–at some point…

This Falcons defense won’t get better until Dimitroff makes some trades..now.

NFL trades are not normal, but they need one..lol.

They won’t improve (vs. the run) all season. Bad NFL defenses do not improve against the run until there is a roster or coaching shake-up in the off-season. It just does not happen, over a season.

NFL defenses that are good, usually are–what they are after camp.

The Falcons need a shake-up now, or there is no use believing they can handle The Saints, The Panthers on the road, and this rough schedule. Otherwise, it is just (”Braves-like” content with being just competitive).

Championship teams make more Championship moves.

Granted, playing William Moore at SS would put some thump, but in BVG’s/Smith’s 2-Deeop Scheme, they safeties play more coverage.

Mike Mularky needs to put it all on Matt Ryan right now.

Michael Turner is going to be lucky to get 1000 yards this year, and it might take another 350 carries to get there. He’s lost for the year. He’s a victim of 375.

The OC has to be willing to change his mindset and go to more 3, 4, and 5 receiver sets and spread out the field.

Relying on Turner right now just isn’t working.

FalconHeroZero

“Wilfork has a bad ankle. Return questionable.”

He was beating the interiorr of The Falcons O-Line.

Arizona Cardinals DT, Dockett was doing the same thing..

It’s not RB Turner’s fault…

(even though he is too fat, and has trade too much speed and agility for size here).

So, far, these teams rather Ryan “burn” them, than Turner.

The Falcons O-Line cannot “man-handle” a proven Championship D-Line like The Patriots have (even without Seymour)..

They can run-over weak NFL defenses on bad teams… This is still Mora’s O-Line without the Cut-Blocking Scheme.

I guess Dimitroff should have traded for Seymour with all of those Draft picks that he’s collected for the Falcons..lol.

Looking for Late-Round Steals and Collecting Picks, and Compensatory Picks is fine, but you have to trade for major talent, or move-up in the draft.

The Falcons need another Pro Bowl-Caliber Defensive Lineman or LB, and they won’t get one by hording picks for the sake of genius.

You see potential in these Falcons, but like most Atlanta Sports Organizations, they fail to make the big move and the right time. they make “nice” moves..

Does someone up stairs not say, “Hey, I’m looking at the replay, he was clearly down, and since that was the call on the field, it’s probably not going to get overturned”? Does anyone do their jobs? These guys get paid millions, yet they make dumb call after dumb call. We should’ve gone for it on 4th and 3. What we got was 20 yards better field position, which won’t matter the way their offense is playing and our defense is playing.

Mike Smith is going to have to nut up if he wants to win this game. Softly attacking their defense and running the ball with Turner isn’t getting it done.

Traver

September 27th, 2009
3:17 pm

In all honesty we are beating ourselves here. The Turner fumble really changed the game. Then the Jenkins interference that I don’t think they would have called if that would have been Moss and then the 2 or 3 dropped interceptions. I don’t care how much Brady is off, you can’t win on the road against a team like the Patriots unless you capitalize on your own opportunities.

“The D needs a rest.”

This Defense is not that young as most proclaim.

DE Bierman and DE Sidbury are young, but they are too small to play on most downs = Running Weakness

Decoud will be very good..

Otherwise, everyone else on Defense has been in The NFL for at least a season or two.

I don’t see much “upside” on Defense either… Maybe, NT Trey Lewis, but Smith started some other DT who was a free agent.

It did not work, because they would be winning this game if they had some speed at WR, LB, and some size and smarts in the front-seven on defense.

Some of the defenders that The Flacons gave $$$$ to this offseason, have little upside or skill. These players just do not make “The Play” when they need them too. They can’t “break-free” to stop the run, the screens, or get to a QB. Maybe, there is a lack of focus with their craft, but they will be replaced.

Drew Brees will be a Saint for a long time. Carolina will get another QB.

Most of this Falcons defense won’t be on this team by the time they even sniff a Super Bowl.

They cannot get to the QB, and everything falls on DE John Abraham shoulders!

Dinking & Dunking on Offense, and “Bend-don’t-Break” on Defense (without blitzing) can only carry The Falcons so far with this schedule.

Extremus

The Falcons have done exactly what I feared might happen all week: play inconsistent football with crucial, game-changing mistakes. You don’t drive deep into the opponent’s territory, fumble or turn the ball over, and expect to win in this league, and especially not against a seasoned, winning organization like the Patriots. It should have been a 17-10, Falcons lead going into the half, but now we’re deep into the fourth quarter of a two-possession game with the Patriots controlling the ball. The defensive line hasn’t reached Brady yet, and despite the fact he’s having an off day he’s still managing to pick us apart at his leisure on 3rd and 4th down. Gonzalez didn’t even get a touch the entire first half. And that pass to White for a loss of five a while ago…WHY??? That was a just plain awful play call that set up long yardage for the next two vital plays.

Yeah, right now I’m ticked off; this Falcons team is better than that. And I think Mike Smith will remind them of it, in no uncertain terms when they hit the locker room, whether they (somehow) win or lose today. The “process” continues; we definitely haven’t reached the end yet, folks.

Why do we insist on rolling Ryan out to the sidelines on a lot of the crunch plays? All that does is limit your options and let the defense concentrate on a small part of the field. When you have Tony G at tight end, give yourself options over the middle of the field to pick up 5-10 yards and a first down. Heck, even lets you dump one off to Snelling.

Coaches, incoming veterans and rookies for The Falcons seem to inherit a “Mindset of Low Expectations, but a Great Lifestyle here in Metro Atlanta”.

The bad Falcon history creates a malaise of “low expectations’ for in-coming players..

They will settle for being just a little bit better than most Falcons teams..

Some of these players need to be cut, so they can try to make the big market NFL Clubs like The NYC Giants, NYC Jets..lololol.

They need “Big Market Pressure” on their backs…

I believe that they would be better players, and would make less goofy mistakes on the field.

Even when they are good, it’s not quite good enough to be respect nationally. They will never fill a dome with loud fans. I see some players on defense calling for crowd noise over the seasons, but they “lay-down” on the next play.

Being in a Big Market like NYC would save most of their careers especially on Defense.

They seem to be settling for 2 out of 3.

All of these Flacon regimes don’t draft badly.. These guys get in Alpharetta, and Flowery Branch, and “check-out”. Maybe, it’s the women or the night-life, but these guys are not “awake” when it counts. They are content here in Atlanta with just being good enough to “get-by” (because of the bad Atlanta Sports History here)

The same goes for The Braves and the Hawks.. Texeira was way better in NYC–because of Big Market pressure.

Ridiculous. NO DB should have to stay in coverage that long.
Falcons have not gone deep all day.

The problem (besides the obvious defense) was we didn’t put the game in Ryan’s hands. Even after the fumble that changed the game, we kept going back to turner while loosing. He hasn’t been effective all day. By not keeping the ball in the offense’s hands, we asked WAY too much of our defense that isn’t that good.

There is the game and listen how excited and happy the announcers sound for Brady and the Patriots. Get off the NUTS! They will not win a playoff game this year and for the Falcons, they gave him all day to throw the ball and finally got stung! Now they will try to throw it every down with Matt Ryan when they should have been in that mode the entire second half. When the falcons drove the ball on the possession Turner fumbled on, did any of the Falcons coaches realize how the Patriots were struggling with the no huddle, then they went away from it. They have an off week and looks like they will have to go SAn Fran and play an undefeated 49ers team.

Do you agree that the coaches get an F- for this game? We just punted when we’re technically still in it. I just don’t get it. It’s like watching the Vols/Gators game, where Kiffin just ran the clock because he didn’t want to get embarrassed (and that’s coming from a Vols fan; the difference is that Kiffin had Crompton, and we have Ryan).

This game was totally winnable. Our offense is just not in synce. Turner has fumble-itis. White doesn’t believe he needs to try to go after the ball now that he has his money.

Fortunately, it is an out of conference loss. Still, a loss by NO today would ease the pain a little.

Why The Falcons paid these defense players the contracts they did is insane..

This is what a Mediocre Market Expectation.. It’s in the player sheads, and they cannot save their careers..

Player after player..

They have some talent, but guys are “bear-hugged”, and the schemes from the coaches are cowardly and too conservative.

Coaching was a D- today. Tentative, play not to lose style, is not going to cut it on the road in Foxboro.

Play calling was good for 2 drives. Atrocious ever since. We never recovered from the Turner fumble. Smith has to realize that he only thing stopping the Pats on offense is Tom Brady’s errant passes – therefore you have GOT to go for it on 4th down at their 39. At that point I knew we just hoping to stay in it and maybe get lucky with a turnover or defensive touchdown. I despise that style of football.

This kind of mindset ain’t going to get us to 9-7 this year, let alone a playoff spot. Saints could hang half a hundred on us if they’re firing on all cylinders.

The Pats played some hellacious D on us today. Today is not an indication of the Falcons as much as it is an indication of the very good team we played today. You know they knew all the crap in the news about their decline etc. They came out and showed exactly how they are going to be just fine.

“The saddest part about this game is that the Falcons have just been outplayed. The Pat’s just seem to be more engaged, playing like they want it more. We look uninterested; no one on either side of the ball has made a big play.”

What even worse now, is that Matt Ryan will be forgotten behind the like of Mark Sanchez of The New York Jets in terms of “national recognition and coverage” because of the rest of this team and staff.

The Jets staff and team are focused because of Big Market Pressure and expectations.

This was a very beatable New England team, the Jest showed that last week. There is no excuse for the tepid play by the Falcons today. We need someone who looks like they care and no one did today. We were out-coached, out-played, out-physicaled, and just plain old out everything. We looked like the old Falcons today. They played through injury so that is not an excuse. We just did not want to play today and it showed.

BALTIMORE — The Baltimore Ravens looked every bit like an undefeated team, and the Cleveland Browns fulfilled their role as a struggling franchise in disarray.

Joe Flacco threw for a career-high 342 yards, Willis McGahee scored two more touchdowns, and the Ravens cruised to a 34-3 victory Sunday.

After Baltimore (3-0) held the Browns to 78 yards while building a 20-0 halftime lead, Cleveland coach Eric Mangini pulled quarterback Brady Quinn in favor of Derek Anderson. The switch did nothing to turn around the fortune of a team that has been outscored 95-29 this season.

Quinn went 6 for 8 for 34 yards and an interception. Anderson, who lost his job to Quinn last year, was 11 for 19 for 92 yards and three interceptions.

The Browns (0-3) have scored one offensive touchdown in their last nine games dating back to last year.

Not only is Mangini winless in his first season as Cleveland’s head coach, but he received unwanted headlines by fining one of his players $1,701 for not paying the hotel bill for a $3 bottle of water.

Flacco went 25 for 35 with a touchdown, and McGahee ran for scores of 7 and 15 yards, giving him six TDs in three games. Baltimore is 3-0 for only the second time in franchise history, thanks heavily to an offense that is averaging 34.3 points per game.

Derrick Mason caught five passes for 118 yards, including a 72-yard TD that made it 34-3 with 8:05 remaining. His third reception made him the 23rd player in NFL history with 800 career catches.

Cleveland played without running back Jamal Lewis (hamstring) and kicker Phil Dawson (leg). The Browns’ lone score was a 29-yard field goal by Billy Cundiff with 14:55 left.

Baltimore set the tone in the opening five minutes, when Domonique Foxworth intercepted a Quinn pass and McGahee followed with a touchdown run. The 31-yard drive was extended when Flacco ran for 2 yards on a fourth-and-1.

Completions of 10, 26 and 17 yards by Flacco led to a 36-yard field goal by Steve Hauschka and a 10-0 lead late in the first quarter.

Baltimore’s next possession was similar: Flacco went 6 for 8 during a 16-play drive, but the Ravens again had to settle for a field goal after holding the ball for more than seven minutes.

After another Cleveland punt, Baltimore covered 80 yards in eight plays — seven of them passes by Flacco — before McGahee ran in from the 15 for a 20-0 lead.

Anderson completed his first two passes, then threw an interception to set up Ray Rice’s first career touchdown, a 9-yard run that made it 27-0.

Joshua,

It pains me, too, but it’s life. It’s sad that the fans care more about who wins than the players, but, like you said, when you have a $600,000 a week paycheck, it’s easy to smile despite your play on the field.

We better have a plan other than run Turner, because it is pretty obvious that Turner is not going to be anywhere near as productive this season as he was last year. He looks a least a half a step if not a step slower and he has already pull the ball on the ground twice, both times when we were driving. Hope we have a backup plan.

That won’t happen unitl next season.. Gonzalez and this offense is ready now..

The Falcons have a phenom QB who is ready now, if this regime actually gets him a speed WR that actually “wants it”.

Now, all you will hear form The national media is Mark Sanchez because their team “gets it”. The Jest are aggressive.

Dimitroff can stock-pile picks, but you will be waiting unitl Matt Ryan is about 35 in the new Blank Field in Dultuh lololololol for a defense from those picks.

Sometimes, you have to trade picks…high picks, or trade-up.

The Ravens’ opponents have 12 wins combined all of last year. Our three opponents? 33. Get real, man. The Browns have looked inept all last year and all this year, same with the Chiefs. Your biggest win was against the Chargers, who got in the playoffs last year only because of a horrible AFC West division.

It didn’t make any difference but the fumble recovery/incomplete pass call that Smith had to challenge in the first half is one of the most ridiculous calls I’ve ever seen. I’ve been watching football since the 60’s and seen a lot of bad calls but that one took the cake.

What if the refs were fair on both sides?
What if the falcons coaches abandoned the run which wasn’t working (run, run, incomplete pass doesn’t work) and put the game in Ryan’s hands?

Enter your comments here Is it just me or do the Falcons have two modes of playing – aggressive and passive. The Jets showed Mike Smith how to play the Patriots AAGGGRREEESSIVELY. When the Birds play aggressively they are usually in the game, but too often Smith has them playing back, also known as preventive defense. How long will it take til Smith figures it out??? I would rather see Randy Moss score a touchdown while Brady is slammed to the ground than watch the Falcons letting them play toss and catch 10-15 yards per catch. I would rather see the Falcons lose
62-0 than give away a game 20-17 – Smith is fast losing my respect. The Saints breed aggression – even when they lose – you love to watch them.

Norwood needs Mora’s Cut-Block Scheme because he cannot take a shot.

This O-Line is not a Power Line. The Left side will be very good.

The interior cannot fire off the ball outside of the dome in big games.

Turner is too big than in his Charger days.. Jamal was too big back then as well.

Too much weight = loss of cutting ability, and the loss of the ability to turn the corner and change direction.

The Falcons will be forces to turn this offense into a pass-first offense with Turner turning into a goal-line RB.

The problem with that is they have WRs with no speed, and no break-away capabilities.

The Falcons have to make a decision.

Their only hope is to add Norwood and open this passing offense up as much as possible.

Not as ugly a game as it could have been, but not as good as it could have been either (obviously).

First, is it the Patriots offensive line, or do we miss Peria Jerry that badly? It’s obvious to me that we miss Jerry, but I’m leaning towards it being the Patriots O-line. Even Abraham and Biermann were gobbled up all game long. And our interior defensive linemen were getting very little penetration. Hence, the Patriots gashed us badly with their running game while Brady struggled (despite not having pressure all afternoon). Our front four has to do better than this. A LOT better. Either that, or Dimitroff is going to have to scour the market for another D-lineman, and there ain’t much available.

Well, those are the growing pains of a young defense.

Then of course, there were the untimely penalties. This game would have been different if we hadn’t penalized ourselves right out of an effective offensive drive. First Jenkins, then Baker. After that, the Pats defense kept us covered up, period. Ryan had a good game anyway, never turning the ball over or even coming close to it, and giving what the defense allowed. But we had that defense broken for that series, and could have broken them for the game, had we not penalized ourselves right out of it.

Then there was the bad non-calls. Brady’s touchdown pass should never have happened. Why? John Abraham had finally gotten to him, and had a hand on him. But he was being held something fierce. No call. Replays showed it plain as day.

There were other no-calls. For instance, the offensive pass interference call on Michael Jenkins was correct. But how is it they saw THAT, but didn’t see the defensive pass interference the very play right before it? That was why Jenkins used his right arm to push off. The play before that, the defensive back held his right arm the whole time!!!

Those weren’t the only non-calls. They called a late hit on Jamal Anderson, but conspicuously missed a couple of late hits Ryan took. Huh. Home-town refing, I call it. Especially the call where Ryan’s pass got batted down, and they didn’t signal it a dead ball, allowing the Pats to run it in for a touchdown before the challenge flag came out. That told me how this game was going to get called right from the word go.

As it is, that didn’t lose the game for us. A porous run defense did, and a couple of drive-killing penalties did. That and NO pressure on Brady. The way our defense played, Brady should have had 400 yards passing.

Oh, and who’s idea was it to have Grimes on Moss? WTF?! I sure hope we use this bye week to get Tye Hill ready to play.

What the hell happened to the coahing staff at halftime?? Even though we had a turnover at the half it seems as if the coaching staff stayed in the locker room. Whats with the non aggressive play calling, better yet why did we only throw the ball to Gonzales one time??? Who ever thought up this play call schem needs a wake up call. On consecutive drives on 3rd down we did some stupid QB roll out that was pretty pathetic the first time they ran it but they decided to run it once more on the next series. But the killer for me was late on one of the last two drive of the 4th QTR. How do we come out on 1st then 2nd and run 5 to 10 yard routes when we are down 16 points? That was a great bright idea. I really hated when the defense ran that 3man rush with the zone behind it on 3rd and long for the PATS. Did Vagorder not watch the Jets game from the previous week. Coach smith when you are on your only 40 yard line and its 4 and 9 or 4 or 10 . Please go fit it!!! The worst thing that can happen is the other team gets da ball on the 40 yard line. Guys just lose focus in this Market.. They just “Cash-out”..lololol.

It’s too late for competition now, because The Falcons traded WR Laurent Robinson for beans and a can of soda right (as it appears now). He was the fastest WR on the squad. All I see are a group of WRs that are possession types that strike no fear in real good NFL teams. And they break no long gains for Ryan..

Now Gonzalez will be doubled, and zoned off.

So much for excitement.. The Falcons will probably break the back-to-back winning season drought though..9-7, but miss the Wild Card.

Stat Checker,

Look up Baltimore’s record over the last decade, then look up the Falcons. You guys had a strong foundation in place when you got Flacco — all you were missing was a quarterback. When we drafted Ryan, we were missing a quarterback, two defensive tackles, linebackers, safeties, corners, and an offensive line. You guys had some of the best safeties (Ed Reed, and Landry is no slouch), corners (McCallister and Rolle), DT (Ngata), linebackers (Ray Lewis, Bart Scott, Terrell Suggs), and a great offensive line.

Comparing the two is hard. If you think Baltimore and Atlanta are on the same level position for position, then you’re not being honest with yourself.

Frankly, I am done with kissing this coaching staffs’ a$$! Today they showed an utter lack of creativity both offensively and defensively. I suppose that no completions to TG ’til the 3rd qtr. was part of the gameplan??? I suppose that the stale running game to this point was worthy of up the middle for nothing repeatedly in the first half??? I suppose that the only play worth challenging is one involving TG??? God forbid he (Smitty) challenge defensively on third down when Grimes clearly dislodged the ball going out of bounds (Moss). I put this loss squarely on the coaches, for it was obvious the entire game that we had the edge in athleticism and talent. The coaching staff has an utter lack of creativity and will-power. Ever heard the saying nothing ventured nothing gained??? We did not blitz one time and paid the price for our arrogance. As if the Jets did not lay the foundation for us. NO PRESSURE!!! We deserved to lose and this from a true Falcon’s fan. What an utter waste of talent and an utter lack of coaching by the Falcons’ staff. I am, and we should be ashamed! Screw the officials! It should not have been in their hands to begin with. Our coaches have NO GUTS! Case closed! Argue with that! We’ll be lucky to have a winning season with the likes of them. I kept my mouth(keyboard) shut last week, fearing such an exhibition. And here it was for the whole world to see….Nice job coaching staff! I repeat; NO GUTS!!! No blitzes=No wins!! DUH? Grimes is our version of “Rudy”
Houston…SUCKS!! (One o.k. game against Panthers last week, but overall, OVERRATED!!
No push or pressure in the interior of D-Line.
Turner, NOT exploding to the hole like he did last year. He is developing the “Duckett Dance” syndrome. He’s tip toeing to the line and getting NO WHERE!!!
Snelling is the BEAST right now. He is a work horse running back. He runs like his job depends on it.
We have GOT to learn how to wrap up on tackles STILL. Peterson missed three tackles b/c of trying to side arm tackle.

You have to play to win against a Legendary Franchise on the road. These local teams try to “steal wins”, and end up losing..

“Defensive Offense and Offensive Defense” ..lololol

Say what you will about this Rex Ryan..

He “wants it”. He wants to take it from good teams. and not waste everyone’s time. Sure, he will get his hat handed to him a few times, but he is coming after you on defense. Now, a Jets defense that their fans were disappointed in, are now on of the best units in The NFL.

Still drinking the KoolAid from the last two home games. Told you then and confirmed today against NE, we get no rush on the passer. Zip..Zilch…Nada…Zero…Nothing. Brady had all day to throw and he was aweful today esp. in the first half. Folks, everybody has a decent offense in the NFL…it is a solid pass rush, pressure defense that wins in the pros. So a week off and on to San Fran where it looks like we’ll get beat again because for the above reason and it’s a roadie.

I think the honey moon just ended for Coach Smith. If he thinks being conservative is going to cut it in Atlanta he is sadly mistaken. Dan Reeves thought he could and he got fired. If he will not take some chances, he will not make it in the NFL. These coaches let their players down in Boston today.

And guess the NFL rulebook is different in NE. They had to take care of their team!

Hey Mark,
I’m tired of this is a young team excuse already. So what did people call this team two years ago when Vick was at QB? Lets see Roddy White, Mike Jenks, Brian Finnarnan, Norwood, and others on offense & defense were on this team. I can remember a lot of drops back them too but most of the scrutny went to Vick but all of a sudden now its a young team. Thats pretty funny!!!

Love the bye week, more whining and speculating in this town… Oh joy!!!

Mr. Bradley, are you flying directly out? If not, go to the North End and have the best Italian meal in the U.S. or Legal Seafood at least… Oh yeah, flying in and out of Hartford is always a better move..

Folks no need for alarm. Yes this was a poorly officiated game and yes we need to take chances. What have we learned so far, that while this defense isn’t up to par, the coaching staff has made adjustments and mow we are heading into the bye week. It seems to me that Mike Smith is a learner and from what we did last year, I think we will be ok this year. Super Bowl….No, Playoffs…Yes. We will at the very least have our first back to back winning season. GO FALCONS!!!

Coach Smith may be conservative, but I’d rather see him compared to Dan Reeves than Jerry Glanville.

Roddy White is not even one of the top 15 wide receivers in the NFL. He did not come through when it counted. Roddy White will not make the Pro Bowl this year.

Falcons played to lose not win. Game over when Turner fumbled what is wrong with him. Defense let Fred Taylor get the same yards as his age 105…. Brady could have stood in the pocket for ten minutes if he wanted too. Down by two scores Falcons run on 1st an 2nd down…. So frustrating…..

At least the Pats did not embarrass the Falcons? The final margin was 16 damn points! How many f#cking points does a football team have to lose by before it falls into the embarrassment category? 21, 40, 60 or more?

This game can be summed up in two words: awful defense. Brady was never under pressure, much less sacked.

FALCONS FANS: Please, please, quit jumping off bridges. We’re still very young, three games into the season, and just went on the road and lost to the best organization in the NFL. The offense just looked sloppy in the rain today and we didn’t get a pass rush because the Pats have probably the best O-Line in the league.

We have a bye week now and alot of football left to play.

No bandwagon here BostonDan, loved my Falcons, Braves, UGA, Hawks, Flames, Thrashers (and any other Atlanta/Georgia team) since I moved to Atlanta in 69′. :) I even watch the Jackets despite the Jacket fans!

I got to say this about the game.It was Vick fault why the falcons lose because I seen plenty of games like that and everyone blame it on him.I forgot Vick no longer with the falcons and his team won lol.People the problems with the falcons is that they haven’t played any good team and New England beat them playing poorly.Eagles,Giants,Jets,Saints will be loses. They are 2-5 in my book as of now.I read about how good their offense and defense but what I saw today is nothing and do they even have a coaching staff.7-9 or 8-8 at best

Joe Buck is a testament to the way nepotism has run this society into the ground. Nobody is less interesting, less literate, and all around less effective as this pathetic d-bag. He’s a statue in the broadcast booth and fox ought to be ashamed of the airtime they have given him over the years.
