Foxborough, Mass. — Before I make this sound like a Peter King coffee nerd post, let me stipulate: I do not drink coffee. As a rule, I do not go to Starbucks. But I went this morning because I was given a $10 SBUX gift card by the nice folks at the Marriott at Copley Square. So I used it on green tea, a low-fat slice of bread and a banana. And when I turned to leave, I saw …
Dan Reeves.
I said hello. I also said, “I remember covering one of your teams up here. I also remember you personally inventing the Dirty Bird that day.”
He laughed. “Long time ago,” he said. And it was.
It was Nov. 8, 1998. The Falcons came to New England 6-2 but still largely unloved back in the A-T-L and largely unproven in the eyes of the national media. They came to the old stadium off Route 1 and won 41-10, and O.J. Santiago — not Dan Reeves — unveiled the Dirty Bird in the end zone that afternoon.
And I remember standing nearby as the Patriots’ coach exited the field to a heavily accented chorus of boos and more than one hurled cup. The coach’s name: Pete Carroll.
The Falcons beat the 49ers in Atlanta the next week at a time the Niners were considered the power in the NFC West, and at his Monday press conference I asked Reeves: “Let me preface this by saying I’ve never before asked this question of any Falcons coach, but is this a Super Bowl team?”
Lo and behold, it turned out to be. Now I’m not saying the Falcons will have stamped their visas to Miami — yes, the next Super Bowl is in the same town as the site as Eugene Robinson’s arrest — if they win today, but winning against Belichick and Brady on the road would be the strongest sign yet that these Birds are bona fide.
Let the record show, however, that both Boston papers pick the Pats. The Globe has it 27-21, the Herald 27-20. A month ago, this idiot correspondent picked New England to win 41-14, but that was at a time when the Falcons’ defense seemed suspect and when I was operating on the premise, which seems pretty flawed already, that the team would start the season slowly.
And I still kind of think New England will prevail. But the Pats are up to their usual injury-list chicanery, listing Randy Moss as questionable late Friday, so there’s that to ponder. But Reeves is here doing the game on radio, and if O.J. Santiago shows up in a golf cart, I’m changing my pick and going with the Birds.
Weather update: Yesterday was gorgeous. There was such a crowd of walkers around Copley Square you’d have thought it was Patriots Day — I was here for that festive Boston event during the NBA playoffs in 2008 — but it wasn’t. It was simply one of those fall New England days of which postcards are made.
Today, by way of contrast, is less picturesque. It has been raining, and it’s supposed to rain more this afternoon. Traffic is already horrible on Route 1 — this is one of those one-way-in stadiums, situated 40 minutes south of Boston — and esteemed colleague D. Orlando Ledbetter left at 8:30 a.m. Had we left at 9:30, we’d still be idling in Walpole.
And the thinking is that a wet track favors the visitors. Because they have Michael Turner, and the Pats don’t seem to have a running game. So file that away.
Media event: You’d think every card-carrying media type would be in Philadelphia today — and please note this is the first I’ve mentioned that game — but the seating manifest indicates that Michael Silver of Yahoo! Sports, Albert Breer of Sporting News Today and Damon Hack of Sports Illustrated are coming here, and I’ve already seen John Clayton of ESPN. So I guess this is itself a pretty big game.
And stop back often! This will be another in our series of live chats, which have come to be the highlight of every week. (At least for me.) I’ll be here until the final horn or Belichick chooses to run off the field in a big fat huff, whichever comes first.

what ifs of the day:
what if turner hadn’t fumbled and lost the momentum we had?
what if Jenkins didn’t push off when he caught that touch down?
What if the refs were fair on both sides?
What if the falcons coaches abandoned the run which wasn’t working (run, run, incomplete pass doesn’t work) and put the game in Ryan’s hands?
What if Roddy white actually caught the balls that came his way?
What if Gonzo had been involved in the game more than just one pass?
guess we’ll never know, but I sure hope they consider this for next week.

Enter your comments here Is it just me or do the Falcons have two modes of playing – aggressive and passive. The Jets showed Mike Smith how to play the Patriots AAGGGRREEESSIVELY. When the Birds play aggressively they are usually in the game, but too often Smith has them playing back, also known as preventive defense. How long will it take til Smith figures it out??? I would rather see Randy Moss score a touchdown while Brady is slammed to the ground than watch the Falcons letting them play toss and catch 10-15 yards per catch. I would rather see the Falcons lose
62-0 than give away a game 20-17 – Smith is fast losing my respect. The Saints breed aggression – even when they lose – you love to watch them.

Falcons fans,
Don’t be retarded. We’d clearly be better with Vick, who can’t throw, and now can’t run anymore. Why won’t you all just open up your eyes and realize a guy who can’t run, can’t throw, and doesn’t make good decisions is way better than Ryan. I’m wondering when you’ll come to your senses.

The Falcons couldn’t stop the run and they couldn’t put any pressure on Brady. The score could have been a lot worse.
It made no difference in the outcome but the fumble recovery/incomplete pass call that Smith had to use the challenge on is probably the worst call I’ve ever seen. I’ve been watching football since the 60’s and seen lots of bad calls but that one took the cake.

I have a problem with showing no emotion after losing a game that you got outplayed, not with talent, but with heart….yes, I have a huge problem with that when it comes to pro players. ITs all about the big bucks to them. Yes, during the game they want to win the game, but when the clock hits 0:00….its all about the Benjamins.

“We better have a plan other than run Turner, because it is pretty obvious that Turner is not going to be anywhere near as productive this season as he was last year. He looks a least a half a step if not a step slower and he has already pull the ball on the ground twice, both times when we were driving. Hope we have a backup plan.”
Norwood needs Mora’s Cut-Block Scheme because he cannot take a shot.
This O-Line is not a Power Line. The Left side will be very good.
The interior cannot fire off the ball outside of the dome in big games.
Turner is too big than in his Charger days.. Jamal was too big back then as well.
Too much weight = loss of cutting ability, and the loss of the ability to turn the corner and change direction.
The Falcons will be forces to turn this offense into a pass-first offense with Turner turning into a goal-line RB.
The problem with that is they have WRs with no speed, and no break-away capabilities.
The Falcons have to make a decision.
Their only hope is to add Norwood and open this passing offense up as much as possible.

Man, did we look completely out-manned today. The Falcons looked almost like a college team out there against the Pats. We couldn’t run, couldn’t tackle, and definitely couldn’t defend the pass. We have a LONG way to go before we’re in the class of the Pats or Giants.

I didn’t realize the Kraft family was that rich. Its easy to win games while lining the refs pockets with cash. We would have won had it not been for all the bad calls and the momentum shift. When we were forced to be one demential they took advantage. But don’t worry we’ll bounce back after the by week. Im so pissed!

Not as ugly a game as it could have been, but not as good as it could have been either (obviously).
First, is it the Patriots offensive line, or do we miss Peria Jerry that badly? It’s obvious to me that we miss Jerry, but I’m leaning towards it being the Patriots O-line. Even Abraham and Biermann were gobbled up all game long. And our interior defensive linemen were getting very little penetration. Hence, the Patriots gashed us badly with their running game while Brady struggled (despite not having pressure all afternoon). Our front four has to do better than this. A LOT better. Either that, or Dimitroff is going to have to scour the market for another D-lineman, and there ain’t much available.
Well, those are the growing pains of a young defense.
Then of course, there were the untimely penalties. This game would have been different if we hadn’t penalized ourselves right out of an effective offensive drive. First Jenkins, then Baker. After that, the Pats defense kept us covered up, period. Ryan had a good game anyway, never turning the ball over or even coming close to it, and giving what the defense allowed. But we had that defense broken for that series, and could have broken them for the game, had we not penalized ourselves right out of it.
Then there was the bad non-calls. Brady’s touchdown pass should never have happened. Why? John Abraham had finally gotten to him, and had a hand on him. But he was being held something fierce. No call. Replays showed it plain as day.
There were other no-calls. For instance, the offensive pass interference call on Michael Jenkins was correct. But how is it they saw THAT, but didn’t see the defensive pass interference the very play right before it? That was why Jenkins used his right arm to push off. The play before that, the defensive back held his right arm the whole time!!!
Those weren’t the only non-calls. They called a late hit on Jamal Anderson, but conspicuously missed a couple of late hits Ryan took. Huh. Home-town refing, I call it. Especially the call where Ryan’s pass got batted down, and they didn’t signal it a dead ball, allowing the Pats to run it in for a touchdown before the challenge flag came out. That told me how this game was going to get called right from the word go.
As it is, that didn’t lose the game for us. A porous run defense did, and a couple of drive-killing penalties did. That and NO pressure on Brady. The way our defense played, Brady should have had 400 yards passing.
Oh, and who’s idea was it to have Grimes on Moss? WTF?! I sure hope we use this bye week to get Tye Hill ready to play.

The heartless quitters are back! Michael “Another Fumble” Turner took away every ounce of momentum the team had built with carefree giveaway fumble. Sorry son of a betch! Roddy “Another Drop” White can peddle his untalented a$$ on down the line. Motherf#cking bestard! John Abraham (along with rest of alleged defenders) took a day off with pay. Overrated quitter and partners in crime! Patriot offense treated Falcon defense like betch dogs and made them like it. No defense with any pride or balls whatsoever allows three (or was it four?) fourth down conversions. Total bullshet! Completely unacceptable. Embarrassment from start to finish! Damn sons of betches. Let the untalented scum stay in Massachusetts! Who needs damn quitters? Pulled a f#cking Sori Letemin! That is the ultimate insult. Shameful giveup job! What the hell happened to the coahing staff at halftime?? Even though we had a turnover at the half it seems as if the coaching staff stayed in the locker room. Whats with the non aggressive play calling, better yet why did we only throw the ball to Gonzales one time??? Who ever thought up this play call schem needs a wake up call. On consecutive drives on 3rd down we did some stupid QB roll out that was pretty pathetic the first time they ran it but they decided to run it once more on the next series. But the killer for me was late on one of the last two drive of the 4th QTR. How do we come out on 1st then 2nd and run 5 to 10 yard routes when we are down 16 points? That was a great bright idea. I really hated when the defense ran that 3man rush with the zone behind it on 3rd and long for the PATS. Did Vagorder not watch the Jets game from the previous week. Our coaches really did us a dis-service today starting from Smith to the OC and the DC.

Just admit the fact that Falcons got their hats handed to them on both sides on the ball… And it was not a stellar day for Mike Smith as well… Back off of Grimes, he’s a nickel back, NE outschemed them to get him on Moss… Boy did they make them pay… He had nothing to do with them running the ball right down the Falcons throat…

“Why are we talking about non-Falcon players in other games?”
Boundless hypocrisy.
Looks like Vick will get to start against Kansas City. That’s good, because it’s an easier team to play against. Otherwise, he would likely get taken advantage of, having been out two years and playing for a totally different kind of team.
Good game for Joe Flacco. A couple more like that and he MIGHT catch Matt Ryan in the NFL ratings…
Of course, Flacco wasn’t playing against the Patriots, either. It was the friggin’ Browns

Mike Smith did a bad job of coaching today!! He show us that he is passive and coach scared. I am sorry but I think that this team is far from the super bowel. The saints will win the divison and the falcons will finish 8-8 or 9-7 this year. The defence played the best that they could giving that they were on the field all day!!
Coach smith when you are on your only 40 yard line and its 4 and 9 or 4 or 10 . Please go fit it!!! The worst thing that can happen is the other team gets da ball on the 40 yard line. Your defence was gassed out there !! Shame on you for allowing your defence to play over 75 plays today!! Ur not ready to be a super bowl coach bc this team is not ready!!! I am sorry but WE SHOULD HAVE HIRE Mike Singletary instead!! We could not do that bc Mr. Blank was worried that all da red necks in GA would not receive a black coach in GA. This is a state that is full of red necks !!! I am sorry that’s why this state has a 10.0 percent unemployment rate and guess what most of them are black!!!!! It is a shame.. Ryan is thows much softer and more timely than Vick ever did.
Guys just lose focus in this Market.. They just “Cash-out”..lololol.
It’s too late for competition now, because The Falcons traded WR Laurent Robinson for beans and a can of soda right (as it appears now). He was the fastest WR on the squad. All I see are a group of WRs that are possession types that strike no fear in real good NFL teams. And they break no long gains for Ryan..
Now Gonzalez will be doubled, and zoned off.
So much for excitement.. The Falcons will probably break the back-to-back winning season drought though..9-7, but miss the Wild Card.
I’ve seen enough… Veterans just do not improve. Young veterans can improve with more playing time.
Jerry is gone, but he was miscast as a NT.

Stat Checker,
Look up Baltimore’s record over the last decade, then look up the Falcons. You guys had a strong foundation in place when you got Flacco — all you were missing was a quarterback. When we drafted Ryan, we were missing a quarterback, two defensive tackles, linebackers, safeties, corners, and an offensive line. You guys had some of the best safeties (Ed Reed, and Landry is no slouch), corners (McCallister and Rolle), DT (Ngata), linebackers (Ray Lewis, Bart Scott, Terrell Suggs), and a great offensive line.
Comparing the two is hard. If you think Baltimore and Atlanta are on the same level position for position, then you’re not being honest with yourself.

Frankly, I am done with kissing this coaching staffs’ a$$! Today they showed an utter lack of creativity both offensively and defensively. I suppose that no completions to TG ’til the 3rd qtr. was part of the gameplan??? I suppose that the stale running game to this point was worthy of up the middle for nothing repeatedly in the first half??? I suppose that the only play worth challenging is one involving TG??? God forbid he (Smitty) challenge defensively on third down when Grimes clearly dislodged the ball going out of bounds (Moss). I put this loss squarely on the coaches, for it was obvious the entire game that we had the edge in athleticism and talent. The coaching staff has an utter lack of creativity and will-power. Ever heard the saying nothing ventured nothing gained??? We did not blitz one time and paid the price for our arrogance. As if the Jets did not lay the foundation for us. NO PRESSURE!!! We deserved to lose and this from a true Falcon’s fan. What an utter waste of talent and an utter lack of coaching by the Falcons’ staff. I am, and we should be ashamed! Screw the officials! It should not have been in their hands to begin with. Our coaches have NO GUTS! Case closed! Argue with that! We’ll be lucky to have a winning season with the likes of them. I kept my mouth(keyboard) shut last week, fearing such an exhibition. And here it was for the whole world to see….Nice job coaching staff! I repeat; NO GUTS!!! No blitzes=No wins!! DUH? Even I know that! Brady and his coaches did too….Pathetic!
Good luck! I am thouroughly disgusted with the effort and personnel decisions. Go ahead and give JA98 another start Fools! What more do you need to say??? Utterly dissappointed, in the Atl.

As a die hard Falcon fan, I was truly disappointed after we did not go for it on 4th down at the 35, when we were down by 6 in the third quarter. That was a terrible decision. The Falcons defense played the whole second half of that game. The referees called a horrible game; they seemed to be Patriot fans. The Falcons had their chances and blew them. I do question Mike Smith not going for it on 4th down on our last possession, but oh well, can’t do much about it now.
When we can get some SERIOUS shut down corners, then we will have a more complete defense.
Grimes is our version of “Rudy”
Houston…SUCKS!! (One o.k. game against Panthers last week, but overall, OVERRATED!!
No push or pressure in the interior of D-Line.
Turner, NOT exploding to the hole like he did last year. He is developing the “Duckett Dance” syndrome. He’s tip toeing to the line and getting NO WHERE!!!
Snelling is the BEAST right now. He is a work horse running back. He runs like his job depends on it.
We have GOT to learn how to wrap up on tackles STILL. Peterson missed three tackles b/c of trying to side arm tackle.
Overall, should’ve won, but I feel good going into a BYE week with a 2-1 record and a division win under our belts. Still, A LOT of work needs to be done!!!!!!!

Brady had all day to throw and he was aweful today esp. in the first half. Folks, everybody has a decent offense in the NFL…it is a solid pass rush, pressure defense that wins in the pros. So a week off and on to San Fran where it looks like we’ll get beat again because for the above reason and it’s a roadie.
