Bradley’s Buzz: The Falcons look down on the Patriots

This is a clip-and-save moment: The Falcons head to New England ranked ahead — repeat, ahead — of the Patriots. And that’s not a minority opinion. It’s nigh-unanimous.

Don Banks of SI.com has the Falcons No. 7 to the Patriots’ No. 9 in his power rankings. Adrian Hasenmayer of FoxSports has the Falcons No. 3 — No. 3! — to New England’s No. 8, and so does Pete Prisco of CBSsports.com, who covered the Falcons’ game against Carolina.

ESPN.com has the Falcons No. 4 to the Pats’ No. 10 in its overall survey. Diving deeper, we note that all four of ESPN’s participating analysts have the Falcons ahead of New England, and Paul Kuharsky has them No. 2 overall — No. 2! — behind the Giants.

And then we move to NFL.com, where seven of eight experts have the Falcons ranked ahead of New England. Pat Kirwan and Joe Theismann have them No. 3, which is the high. The low comes from Michael Lombardi, who has the Falcons No. 11 to the Pats’ No. 5.

Seeing as how the NFL named a trophy after Michael Lombardi, I guess he knows a bit about football. But I think I’d have the Birds in my top 10. Just saying.

Back in ‘98, Falcons went to Foxboro and won 41-10 on their way to the Super Bowl. Look for the same treatment Sunday. Go Birds!

As an aside, I heard from several friends and family in the Boston area that after Brady went down — and even though Cassel is very good — there was at least one screen devoted to Ice if he was playing that day. Those folks do love their BC.

Power Rankings are made more on whim and instinct than close examination. It’s been two games. The Falcons just lost a big stopper-whopper in the middle for the season–Jerry. The defense already looked liquid against the Panthers. Let’s not curse them with praise just yet, MB.

I do think Moss and the NE passing game represents some real issues for our secondary. Having said that, NE isn’t exactly stifling anybody witht that rebuilt defense of theirs. Assuming our offense looks one step ahead of theirs right now, I say The Birds fly in a squeaker 31-28.

It’s awfully hard to go against Tom Terrific and Randy Moss. The Pats have a retooled D, the same as the Falcons. My heart wants to say the Falcons win a close one unless Welker plays. N.E. has too many offensive weapons if that’s the case and my gut says the downward trend magnifies for BVG and company. I don’t see anyone on the Falcons roster who can cover Moss in man, so that means he’s doubled. That leaves Welker and Watson free in the middle. I like Matty Ice a lot, but Tom Terrific is still the man.

Never take these Pats lightly…that said, our birds really have a chance this week to make the preverbial “statement” to the league. Let’s hope they avoid being the Falcons of old and consolidate their earnings to date and not go out and give their critics the chance to continue the “same old Falcons” routine. It doesn’t matter how, but as the once-great Al Davis famously said, “Just Win Baby”.

Looking forward to a great game Sunday. I think it could be a shootout with the score being 35-30. Both teams have the chance to be in 30s. We have to be able to get Turner going so that we an control the ball and the clock. I’m concerned that our pass rush is such that Brady will have time to pick us apart, so ball control is going to be key for us to win.

3-0 baby, lets go Falcons!

3-0 sounds pretty good down here. Then if ATL wins their next game, 4-0 doesn’t mean squat. Ask the Detroit Lions. “Another One Bites the Dust” was their theme. They were 4-0 coming in. They bit the dust when they left ATL 4-1. Missed the playoffs.

If Atlanta can keep its nose above .500 at 4-3 through Week 8, the second half of the season sets up for another run at the playoffs.”

Diamond Dawg

Chris Chandler is the only QB to lead the Falcons to the Super Bowl. Vick has led the Falcons to a couple of playoff victories. But then again, so has Bartkowski.

Vick plays for the Eagles now. He’ll get a few wildcat snaps here and there. But the fact remains that he’s a 3rd string, part time player.

That team is still McNabb’s and will be until he retires or signs as a FA with another team. I would take Vick over several surrent starting QB’s in the league now, but that won’t happen unless he’s traded. I think he’d be great in Oakland or SF.

Matty is the current leader and has the most upside of any QB in Falcons history. And he’s only going to get better. If he reminds you of anyone, its got to be Peyton. And who would you rather have at QB, Vick at his peak or Manning at his peak?

Anyone who’s unbiased would say Manning… At least 95% of the time.

Mark – So if the Falcons finish ahead of the Pats in the “power rankings” does that mean they receive a better BCS bowl bid?

In my previous posts I have been charged with being too glum about the Flacosn indisputable greatness after beating the Dolphins and Panthers so here goes:

1. The Ryan-Smith combo obviously leaves Montana-Walsh and Bradshaw-Noll in the dust (neither of thoe combos ever beat the Carolina Panthers);

2. The Patriots and Steelers have lot to learn from this Falcons organization when it comes to producing a team that wins consistently; and

3. The Atlanta Falcons – great team or greatest team?

Did Michael Vick sexually assault dogs?

Animal rights group makes accusation against NFL star.

An animal treatment activist group is requesting that Michael Vick undergo a full scale mental evaluation before he can be reinstated following his conviction on dog fighting charges.

Apparently People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) sent a letter to the NFL commissioner saying Vick should be checked to see if he is a psychopath before having any chance of a return to football.

The letter reportedly quotes psychological studies which show distinct correlations between individuals who abuse dogs and individuals who sexually assault animals as well. Said one PETA member, “What he did may only be the tip of the iceberg…this behavior could be much deeper than a lot of people initially expected”.

Vick is serving a prison sentence on conspiracy charges in connection with his bankrolling of a dogfight gambling ring. Evidence in the case showed he killed dogs in such brutal manners as drowning, beating and electrocution.

“Saying sorry and getting his ball back after being caught enjoying killing dogs in hideously cruel ways for many years doesn’t cut it,” PETA president Ingrid Newkirk said.

Vick Supporter,

You must truly love what you’re doing on the blog here. I bet you’re proud of yourself. First, I’m sure the Falcons don’t look down on the Pats and are not taking them lightly. Those are Mark Bradley’s words. 2nd, The Falcons went to the Super Bowl in 1998 and that was the best football we have ever seen in Atlanta….The one good Vick year was NOT the Super Bowl…but it was fun…and we had a more complete team in 1998 then we’ve ever had until this year.

Your disdain for and bias’ against Matt Ryan, just because you are a Vick supporter is illogical given what the man has shown you. If you are fair minded and compare Ryan to any other rookie QB, save Joe Flacco, you must admit he made history last year.

I believe Vick deserves a 2nd chance and I’m glad he’s getting it. You are entitled to your opinion just like everyone else, but that doesn’t mean you have to make an ass of yourself by going over the top with your love for Mike Vick…while subjecting Falcons fans to your incessant and disturbing obsession with pushing your inane and distorted point of view upon those of us who enjoy blogging about our team that we have right now. We have moved on from that era and I look forward to the Eags coming into the dome and facing our new team with or without MV7. We got a little something for them, and we got plenty to give the Pats this Sunday too…just sit back and enjoy the homecoming.

Do us all a favor and go find an Eagles blog to root for your hero.
