Most teams can lose and have it just be a loss. When Georgia Tech loses, it’s an indictment of Paul Johnson. This mightn’t be fair, but it’s reality: When your stock in trade is a stylized offense, any reversal is going to be personalized. And Paul Johnson, as we know, tends to take things personally.
As noted earlier, he delights in flouting conventional wisdom, especially when it comes to his offense. Well, that offense just managed 95 yards rushing against Miami — 377 fewer than it did against the same Hurricanes 10 months ago. Yes, Jonathan Dwyer got hurt early, but Tech was supposed to have increased depth in the backfield, was it not?
So now Johnson will have to hear this topic bandied about in both cyberspace and the real world: Has the rest of college football caught on to his spread option? And he’s going to say no, that the offense if run properly will always work against any opponent, but how he wearies of the whole discussion and turns testy?
The loss to Miami was far more comprehensive than the Chick-fil-A thrashing by LSU. That game could be explained away — and Johnson tried — as a failure of motivation and special teams. The offense, he would say, wasn’t at fault. Well, this time it was. The offense did nothing. The defense did less. The Jackets trailed by 14 points at the half and by 23 after three quarters, and now nobody’s really sure what to make of Tech.
“I think we’re going to be good,” Johnson said a couple of weeks ago, but the near-flop against Clemson and the total collapse against Miami have left everything open to question. And next comes North Carolina, which came closest to shutting down that offense last season, and dates with Florida State and Virginia Tech — and yes, with Georgia — still remain.
A cult of personality has arisen ’round Johnson. Tech fans love his tough talk, and they loved it even more when he beat Georgia. But now his highly regarded team has suffered a major blow, and it’s incumbent on PJ not to take the inevitable questions — from both fans and media — as signs of insubordination.
He gets paid a lot of money to coach his team. Here’s where PJ has to duck his head, ignore the chatter and keep coaching.

Other teams have adapted to GTech’s style. The question is, how will GTech adapt to others’ adapted defense? That may not be clear for a year or so. If same thing this time next year, CPJ will have a hard time to stay in GTech.

the old adage applies here:
It is never as good as it seems and it is never as bad as it seems.
UGA has its own issues to deal with.
but,
The Tech folks like trade school junkie and m and RAMBLE ON who predicted 12-0 and BCS title game are going to have to pour out the kool aid and drink a diet coke.

he did better than Rodriguez, but i think the lost scholarships caused Gailey to scrimp on linemen & LB’s, & Michigan 2nd year is going with a QB that fits their system-Josh tries hard, but doesn’t have the quicks-CPJ did something his first year many Tech coaches never did, & had a phenomenal 1st year GT should be grateful for, but until he gets his players in it is too early to call-Gailey’s troops were known for the occasional tank, & a lot of them are still there

3 TDs by the offense in the last 3 games against D1A opponents. That’s not going to cut it. If CPJ’s offense is going to work there will have to be a CONSISTENT passing threat, and right now they don’t have that.

PJ just has to rally the troops and hopefully GT will come out swinging.
Jdawg, get over it. It’s football. The coach can say what he wants to the players. CMR is too much of a wussy to even yell at his players. He would rather huddle them on the sideline and sing kum-by-yah like at the GT-UGA last year. That tactic was marked failure.

I’m not concerned about CPJ and his offense. He’s been doing this too long and has had too much success to doubt him. He’s seen every possible way to defend this “O” over the twenty-plus years he’s run it. He’ll adjust and get it clicking again soon.
It’s the “D” that concerns me. A weak line (other than 91), no pass rush and no pass coverage isn’t a good combination. I had my doubts about Womack last year. This year I have even more.

Criticize it if you want but there is nothing wrong with PJ’s offense. (PJ needs to have thicker skin and not be so defensive but that’s a story for another day.) Georgia Tech was a tired team playing its third game in, what, thirteen days and having to do so in the heat of South Florida. And, furthermore, G-Tech basically did not execute the pass consistently and I’m talking about the simple down-and-outs or up-and-button-hook type routes. Their QB has a lot of work he still needs to do on his footwork and getting set in order to make the throw as he has the arm strength and can and should be able to throw the ball better. The offensive line of GT was also man-handled by Miami which made it harder for the QB to get his feet set and make the proper throw.
As usual, everyone needs to calm down and not over-react to the outcome of one game in the new 2009 season (can’t believe we’re still talking about a bowl game from the 2008-2009 season like that’s relevant).
GT was simply outplayed and outcoached (something Bradley you didn’t think Shannon could do). We’ll see what happens and better understand what we have with some rest and practice time.

3 games in 12 days would wear any team down. We knew the Jackets would have a hard first month with 4 games(3 ACC games) in the first month. This week is our first break and it is only 8 days between games. Coach needs to let the guys rest and do run throughs and film work. Ease up on the hitting and then we get another 6 days off until Miss State. We looked ok just tired and slow legs. If the poll voters can’t see the days and games then they are stupid. We are rollong into the 3 rd week of the season and next week the Polls need to start based on who teams have played and how teams have done.

I Amazed (get it) to all of the talk that everyone has figured out the Tech offense. I’m not Tech fan but reading comments on some of the blogs is embrassing. No matter what offense you run you have to execute. Tech did not do that last night. There offensive line was getting blown up on nearly every play. That’s way they weren’t successful. No matter the offense that is being ran if you don’t execute you won’t be successful. I don’t hear anyone stating that they have the West Coast offense figured out.

Johnson’s offensive scheme has nothing to do with how awful the defense was last night. Zero pass rush, poor coverage in the secondary, and poor tackling in the trenches. I’d hoped the defense would be good. I figured they wouldn’t be great. But what I’ve seen is scary. I have not checked the box score but did Miami punt a single time last night?

You can’t question the offense after one loss. GT is still young, and it is only PJ’s second year. He doesn’t even have his guys in there yet.
It’s only 1 loss. GT can rebound.
If GT goes 11-1 this year will you question it Mark? Not saying it’s likely, but I think the questions about the offense should come after the season…say if GT went 7-5 or something.
Not on one game.
Can’t wait to see the Falcons win on Sunday though!!!!!!!

I posted on Tues. that if you shut down the nerd running game you will beat them. I predicted Miami would beat them by 14 points. Schools have figured out how to defense the “high school” offense the nerds deploy. We saw that in the second half against Clemson and the entire game against Miami. The nerds are one-demensial on offense and their defense is average at best. I predict they will be beaten by FSU, N. Carolina, Va. Tech and in a major beat down in Nov. by UGA. Another trip back to Boise.

Schedule schools like Charleston Southern and Tennessee Tech.
Better yet, drop football, turn Grant Field into an eco-garden using the 70 tons of trash generated each week in Athens as compost.
Folks, where I live the sun rose in the East. The re-play shows we lost to a better team. We are 2-1 and still in contention for the ACC championship and/or a decent bowl game.
UGay will have the same record after Saturday if they are lucky, as will Virginia Tech, Clemson, Florida State, Notre Dame, Ohio State. Michigan State, Oklahoma, and Oklahoma State – but only if they win.
If any of them lose they will probably fire the coach, hang the team in effigy, and then commit mass hari-kari.

Tech should have opened the checkbook to keep Tenuta on staff. When the last of his senior leadership left last year – they took the bite (or sting, as it were) out of the GT defense.
I’ve never seen so many 15-20 yard passes completed across the middle – it was truly pitch and catch. It ain’t the offense that’s the problem, the Jackets just have to make stops for goodness sake!

I’ll try to be a voice of reason as I am on the UGA blogs (hard to do in cyberspace, I know). This will almost mirror what I said after UGA’s loss to OSU. – For GT, I think the O will be fine. The homerun threat is always there if a D-man is caught napping. I’ll give the O one mulligan, but no more. The D however, even tired, looked badly suspect. Harris looked like he was throwing flag football with the no-contact jersey on. I wouldn’t throw in the towel on an ACC title game just yet, but adjustments will be forthcoming. I don’t think UGA or GT fans have a lot of ammo for smack talk right now.

Eastside,
Yes CPJ has had success at every stop with “his” offense. But here is the question no one has ever asked or if asked I have never heard an answer.
It is one thing to run “his” O against the Southern Conference or the WAC or Primarily Big East Teams that are not the most athletic of conferences or do not have Defenses that are Fast and Physical. Not to mention the upgrade in Coaching ability.
Now that this team has begun to face those types on a regular basis and have had one year under their belt to experience this type of O is this going to become a trend that will necessitate CPJ to adapt and diversify???
From his personality I have to believe he will, but right now things aren’t looking so hot and Nesbitt has got to do alot better.

I watched the game because I love Paul Johnson’s style. Georgia Tech’s problem isn’t the scheme: it’s the execution. If you know what to look for (and it’s not hard to learn what to look for), then it’s obvious that on many plays GT’s players simply aren’t executing their blocks. The O-Line is just getting out-played and the backs and receivers are sometimes totally whiffing on blocks. That’s execution; not scheme. They’ll get it figured out, I think, but so far this team seems far less tough mentally than last year’s team. And it was there third game in 12 days.

Miami looked a full step ahead of Tech in every area. Tech looked slow, tired and poorly coached. The big embarrassment of the game came when CPJ asked a man who is a student and an athelete at GT if he is “stupid”. What a poor display of a coach losing it. This reminded me of Bobby Knight and I can’t stand Bobby Knight. How many mothers want their son to play for a coach like this? What a shame.

Regardless of last nights loss by GT and the fact that Whipple’s offense looked much better than the Johnson offense…I for one am immensely glad that there are offenses like Johnson’s that are different. The modern trend to make every offense be the cookie cutter type of copycat (spread offenses) makes watching the games much more boring! But bring in contrasting styles and it livens up the whole pregame discussion and the game itself. Similar to the ancient romans bringing in warriors from all over to fight against members of their Legion to see which style of combat was more efficient.
So Tech fans keep your heads up! Nobody wins them all over and over (but hopefully the Tide will keep rolling in this year!

This GT grad has believed all along that PJ’s offense is seriously flawed. When you are down 3 TDs and still have the QB under center for passing plays he is not going to have time to see the field while dropping back – and this QB only sees one receiver anyway. Miami showed us what a real offense and real QB looks like – PJ’s gimmick O needs more balance, and he is too hard-headed to realize it.
I can see that the lose of last year’s dline is going to kill GT in the passing game, but why is this year’s oline so much poorer? They are pityful blockers for the run or pass.

Alabama Jack – Well said.
We got gashed by a better team last night. Period. No excuses. Sort of like UGA did against Okla State.
Our pass defense has been invisible for the past four games we’ve played against div-1 opponents. Our secondary looked absolutely lost last night. It’s time Dave Wommack make some changes to our pass defense.
Our O-line should be one of the strengths of this team. They have depth and they’re in their second year in the system so they should be up to speed with the schemes. That being the case, there is absolutely no excuse for what they did (didn’t do) last night. There were orange shirts in our backfield all night.
I’m not willing to buy into the excuse of three games in 12 days. With our depth on offense, that shouldn’t have been a problem. We just got plain got beat. That’s all there is to it.

On play after play – I saw the lead blocker just take an arm swipe at the D rush – that is 100% unacceptable. That means that the player did not care and did not even try – usually that happens when the coach or QB has lost the other players. You could have Vince Lombardi as a coach but if
a blocker will not even try – you will lose

jesus christ, we lose one game and suddenly it’s the end of the world and Paul Johnson is a failure and all the redneck Georgia fans have come out of the woodwork talking trash again. Actually, that last one isn’t new – Georgia fans never stop talking trash, even after being beaten on their home turf.
Yes, this team has problems. The O-line couldn’t block for crap last night and the defense forgot how to tackle. (Don’t even get me started on special teams.) Paul Johnson is going to light a fire under their collective asses starting today. I can see him taking drastic measures if we show up next week like we did last night.
One more thing: I hope this knocks us clear out of the rankings (and given how little credit the voters like to give Tech, it probably will). Last season proved that this team works best after being hit with a hard dose of reality – we did, after all, smack Miami right after losing to UNC.

I’m a huge Jackets fan, but, Once again it must be said: Until Johnson get’s a QB that can execute in all phases, this team will underperform. At this level, if you’re a one trick pony, you won’t last long. You must have at leat the THREAT of throwing mid-to-long as a tool, to open up EVEN the “geniuses” Option offense. This QB has proven he is NO pass threat whatsoever. Sure he may complete 1 or 2 down the field. but it’s not enough to hurt an opponent over the length of a football game.

Its very simple..Tech is a one trick pony. Every team has film of what that offense will do. LSU had time to figure it out, Jax St. D2 school whatever, Clemson locked it down in the 2nd half and would have won if not for a phantom holding call, and Miami shut it down. It looks to me like the last 4 games, since the UGA game, Tech has not done anything on O. That offense won’t work at the ACC level and beyond. With no D and a one trick pony O, what did anyone expect? It’s a gimmick O and PJ works it until it gets exposed, then he moves on to another school. Maybe in theory it works, hence the reason he says “when executed properly”, but in theory every offense should work when executed properly. Tech’s problems is that it is so one dimensional.
My Tech fan buddies all had such high hopes for this season. I guess based on a 3 point win at UGA, I don’t know. But welcome back to mediocrity. It has missed you.

Nesbitt continually makes bad decisions running the option, and is certainly not a passer. This was not a one-game thing. UNC had Tech figured out last year. We’re in for a tough, long season…UNC, FSU, Va Tech, maybe Wake and UGA will be hard to win.

My character in the game, Nesbit, couldn’t throw a spell on anyone. I am just glad that I didn’t spend my money on that trip to South Florida, I want the new Apple Snow Leopard. Calling people stupid is in poor taste. We was always careful not to call anybody stupid when we was playing ball and we try not to call anybody stupid now that we are mostly blogging and working the second shift. If people that was stupid didn’t show up then the smart people would all be the stupid ones. We was always taught by Coach to respect the stupid and let them get their swings all the while knowing they couldn’t take a pitch if they was tied up.

It looks as if 26 years and three weeks is the key to solving Smug Johnson’s offense. He keeps saying he is running the same plays he ran at GSU, Navy etc. I’ll guess he will keep running them until his “stupid ” players get it right. It certainly isn’t his fault.

Believe me, what CPJ apparently asked a player is a lot less damning that the questions that the last six quarters have me asking about a lot of them.
There’s nothing wrong with the offense that consistent execution won’t fix. The defense, eh, there’s a number of issues there it appears & those were evident at times even against Jax State and that’s going to take some time to fix. But the it’s the mental & emotional aspects of the team that concern me most, I’m not convinced there’s enough heart & football smarts to play this style at this level right now.
I’m inclined to give them a mulligan on last night as the tough physical stretch of 3 games in less than two weeks got to them pretty clearly. Any more outright dismal performances like this one though & there are some very hard questions that need to be asked, but it’s the players who need to answer those, not CPJ.

PJ’s triple-option offense works great in high school and low level college. It also works the first time through a schedule, even in the ACC. But when teams have played against it before or have time to prepare for it (see LSU), that offense is incredibly easy to stuff–especially for top-level D-1 athletes.

“Johnson’s offensive scheme has nothing to do with how awful the defense was last night.”
Actually, I wonder about that. Just as it is difficult to impossible for other teams to effectively simulate the triple option in practice, it’s likely difficult for Tech’s offense to effectively simulate a pro-style passing game in practice. If the D doesn’t get good preparation in practice, it’s got to have some impact on their ability to defend the pass. It will be interesting to see if this is a chronic problem.

i think last year miami took gt lightly and thats why gt pounded them and its could of been worse if coach johnson did not take the starters out. this year miami will not take gt lightly bc of what happen last year, but im very confident gt wins 38-17 over miami. miami has shown us how undisiplined they can be on defense and the tripple option offense only needs one mistake to take it to the house for a touchdown.john dwyer runs for 12 carries 180 yards and bebe thomas 6 cathces 150 yards. close game at half but tech pulls away in the 3rd quarter. tech could possibly finish 11-1
…you were oh so close on the final score… terrible miscalculation on which team had it though… back to physics class for you!!! Tech could still possibly finish 11-1 though… a$$ clown!

Enter your comments here Johnson’s offense REQUIRES a very gifted QB. In this offense the QB has to make reads that determine where the ball goes. Last night Miami came with a basic four front but as the ball was snapped their speed and quickness allowed them to get in the backfield throwing the timing (which is critical) off. PJ is stubborn enough to believe his offense will work no matter what the down and distance. The game is all about adjustments. Tech didn’t make enough.(fly patterns and a few toss sweeps won’t cut it) Speed (5 star players Tech won’t ever get enough of) will always cause this team problems. A more gifted option QB will make something out of nothing.

Georgia fans (and I’m one of em) shouldn’t celebrate Tech’s loss with too much gusto. With Randy Shannon hanging around the U, Miami will remain average. We need this season to spin out of control for the U so Randy gets fired and they bring in a competent coach (maybe Tubs). Either way, Florida is taking the pick of the litter as FSU and Miami are both average to dull. Georgia will be better off if these two programs are resurrected and take a share of the sunshine state talent from Jean Short U.

Look–coaches do not play the game. Never have, never will. Johnson is right–his offense produces in a similar way to U.Meyers’. The thing here is Johnson is playing with athletes he was given, not those he chose. Give him a quarterback who can throw, who can read, and who can think, and he will win more than eight games, techites. jeez.

Miami has had more talented players than GT for 4 years and lost all 4 games. UM has failed to develop players because they’ve done a poor job of hiring talented coaches.
The biggest difference in this game is that Miami’s superior talent is now being directed by exceptional coaches. GT fans know only too well the significant upgrade Mark Whipple represents compared to Patrick Nix, and Lovett had the most effective defensive gameplan the Jackets faced all season.
Sorry Techies, but the party is over in the ACC. Barring injury to Jacory Harris, the U is finally ready to bring credibility to this conference on a national level like the ACC commish had hoped.
Doubt me? Well, UM’s opening drive this season was 6 plays/66 yards for a TD. (666) Don’t say I didn’t warn you. CAN “U” FEEL THE HEAT?
Link Report this comment
In case you missed my previous sagacity, I thought I’d give you another viewing of my wisdom. It can be found on page 2 of the “Big plays against big plays” by Robertson if you doubt my veracity.
6 first downs via the rush
6 completed passes
6 third down conversions
Scary-isn’t it.
Now that GT fans have rejoined the faithful back here on Earth, consider that this dismantling happened without the benefit of turnovers. Virtually all of the players you saw last night (barring a visit from ME) will return to Atlanta next year where the ultimate humiliation will befall those who dared to mock the U during its chrysalis slumber.
Fear not Tech fans, the balance of your schedule will feel like a walk through an English garden following the reprimand you received last night. And consider this-while Humility is by far the ugliest of all HIS creations, it is wisely practiced by those who are merely pretenders to the throne.
Until next season then, Jackets.

It would not surprise me if Miami went undefeated. Harris is scary good. 33-17 was brutal. But we did score. I’m not ready to fold up shop. If we blocked and did not miss any assignments and still got stopped, I would be concerned about the system. I think our o-line can block better and our skill players can execute better with blocking and making plays. I’m very concerned about our defense. Very concerned.
I think the team does not have an emotional leader amongst the players. They need a Darryl Richard in there and I don’t think they have it.

SJ-as I have repeated on numerous occasions…shoddy tackling of which even MR has admitted as ultimate downfall of Dawgs technique, edge and execution.
Hey I for one give CPJ his props and respect his coaching but as stated this is a significant step-up in athletes on all sides of the ball.
Key to me is not the offense that is the problem it is Tech’s defense that has not impressed me even in beating the Dawgs. Giving up 400+ and 6 TD’s through the air is putting alot of pressure on your O. Dawgs 3 TO’s w a pick 6 definitly helped the cause.
Same mantra week in and out if Dawgs don’t reverse the TO ratio we (UGA fans) will be lamenting a L to the Hogs.

Here you have assembled this team around this style of offense, and its not exactly blowing teams away. Paul Johnson, you can’t blame your team all the time. Much of the criticism falls on you. Did y’all notice how little we pitched to the A-back after the one TD off of the pitch last week. All the plays were a lame attempt at the pass or Dwyer up the middle. I think this was to keep Nesbit from getting hit too much and to keep Miami from scheming the option. I predict Dwyer will get less carries and the A-backs will run wide against Miami. Prepare for some long runs this Thursday!
Out of THIS mess you did manage to predict one thing correctly… Dwyer… DID get less carries… now, if you only left out all that other mess you might have gained genius status…

I am amazed at all the armchair coaches. Some of you people act like CPJ never lost a game and some of you UGA people act like you haven’t (memo to UGA: 1980 is now 29 years ago).
To listen to some of you, teams would need to change their offenses every game, lest someone figure out what they’re doing by watching film. That cracks me up. If a pro set team has a miserable game, do people start screaming for them to go to some other offense?
CPJ has been pretty successful with the triple option everywhere he’s taken it. It’s really more about execution than the offense itself.
The real worry on this team is the defense. No pass rush and receivers open all over the field. Not just last night, but last week as well. Even if the offense is clicking, it’s going to take 30+ points each game to garner wins.

For an unstoppable option offense, Tech sure does look out of options. CPJ should get an endorsement deal with Maalox or the Dick Cheyney School of Public Speaking. Also, has anyone else noticed the size of CPJ’s gib? Now that’s a turkey neck.

The fact that teams have “figured out” Tech’s offense only means that the offense *can* be beaten as easily as a more traditional offense. Now, their games will come down to talent and execution just like any other team. In other words, the triple option will not really help them or hurt them in comparison to another offense; it will just be what they happen to use.

Folks, Clemson is the best team we will play this season, and they are right next to Va. Tech in terms of talent. I finished watching the game from tivo last night and NFL scouts from 20 teams were in attendance at that game. Clemson’s O line, at its lightest, outweighed the largest Tech lineman by 25 pounds, and at worst, by 65. One of their Def-ends was the #1 rated player out of high school 2 years ago. Then with Spiller and Ford, you had a team of race horses, and Parker threw lights out. That was one of the best teams that the ACC has in place.
That said, Miami has some playmakers too, but not the number that Clemson did. Harris has a great go-to guy in Travis Benjamin, who had 128 yards against FSU. Harris is a good passer, but he never ran against FSU, I don’t look to see him do anything differently. Miami had 90 yards on the ground and 386 in the air. Same attack as what we saw with Clemson, with younger players. I think our D is better than to allow two 30 point games. I see Tech winning by 7 on the road.
Out of all this brainstorming i’m not sure what i find the most comical… maybe that idea that you personally counted 20 NFL scouts in attendence at a college football game? or that CLEMSON will be the best team GT faces all season… lol… this is rich in brilliance…

The loss had little to do with the scheme. They didn’t execute well.
They played horribly on defense. Thier talent wasn’t equal with the talent Miami put on the field. Miami beat the breaks off Tech equal to the licking Tech delivered to them last year.
This is not an inditement of the option. They got outplayed. Miami had more emotion, fire, drive and energy. Tech had better find those and some stamina with a relatively thin team and they had better find them soon.

Out of all this brainstorming I’m not quite sure what I find the most comical… it’s a tie between you counting NFL scouts on the TV set (are you a scout scout?) OR your idea that Clemson is the best team you will face this season! …this is rich with brilliance though…

This idea of “figuring out the offense” is ridiculous. Is it possible to figure out Tech’s offense but not figure out UGA’s offense? Or Miami’s? No matter what system you run, it takes players executing for it to work. Tech was dominated on the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball. That is what happened, pure and simple. That shouldn’t be any comfort to Tech fans, because actually executing a game plan is much harder than coming up with one. But it shouldn’t be any comfort to Tech’s opponents either, because beating Tech or any other opponent isn’t about “figuring out their system”, but out performing them.

Tech is in big trouble this year. That’s one of the worst performances I’ve seen both offensively and defensively in a long time. Nesbit is toally worthless and that’s not a good thing when your defense is one of the worst in the conference. I see Tech around 7 and 5 this year. I see bad things in the future for this program. Last 4 games….
LSU-38-3-Got totally dominated
J’vill State-20 point win that was very ugly and J’vill St was missing their best player. If the QB played that game it could have been much closer.
Clemson-Completely checked out at halftime and the refs bailed them out at the end. Should have lost this one.
Miami- Just like the LSU game, got totally embarrassed. Score could have been 45-17.
This program just took a huge step backwards. Just when the Techies thought they had something to build on, they realize they are right back to the old tech and the 7 and 5 records.

Your Canes look legit right now. Jacory Harris looked sharp and handled a good GT defense. You get 10 days to prepare for VA Tech, the only team that could possibly stop you from winning the ACC. The Oklahoma game is suddenly a much bigger deal.

Melinda, I too am concerned about the Jackets. But an emotional leader like Darryl Richard didn’t help us last year. Our defense was exposed last year and our senior-heavy d line never really stepped up. I don’t like the scheme and think Womack should be catching some serious heat. PJ will work it out on O but the D is sorry and has been since Womack took it over.

Tech’s loss last night proves what happens when a team is so one dimensional. The main problem I’m seeing with this offense is that the O-Line needs to hold their blocks a little longer against the D-Line before the go to the second level. Because what has happened the last 2 games, especially in the second half; is that the D-Line is able to get into the backfield faster and slow down the play because the lineman aren’t holding their blocks. Johnson’s going to have to reevaluate some of his blocking scheme’s.

MY QUESTION TO TECH “FANS”……. I was wearing my UGA hat last night, and I had several people ask me why I was rooting against Georgia Tech, and how it was “unclassy”. WHY IS IT “unclassy” for me to root against the bugs, when the “Ramblin Wreck” car has 2 flags on the front that say “To Hell With Georgia” paraded around their field whether we are playing them or not. WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE PLEASE??????

I’m not going to rip on GT, because it’s a good university and a legit coach is at the helm. People do eventually figure out the option, though.
But a bit of comeuppance for the clowns who troll these blogs, waiting for the first chance to post a score of a win (the first in eight years). And now, ‘bowl games from last year don’t have any relevance.’ Umm, wha? Can’t have it both ways, Jacket fans. You can’t gloat about a win in November of last year and pretend a game from the start of the year doesn’t count in the same breath.
Protip: don’t go bleating about a single game in nearly a decade every chance you get, and you won’t get the same in return when you get embarassed. Much respect for the university, but the fans have something to be desired.

You are the epitome of ” you can’t fix stupid !”. Meyer is “taking the pick of the litter” ? where ? In South Florida ? Concentrate on GA’s own woes.
“we need this season to spin out of control”. Do you even grasp how pathetic that sounds ? Hoping that Miami loses so you can get recruits? Have you ever even darkened the door of a HS far less an accredited college or university ? Your parents should sue your school district for producing such an inferior product.
Let’s see, Mark Richt is a ‘Cane, Willie Martinez? (Check!), and you are about the only tool in the peanut state that blithely declares ” With Randy Shannon hanging around the U, Miami will remain average..”. Hey Giblet Head…follow rebuilding much ?
Tommy Tubberville (Cane!) does’nt sit around hoping that Miami loses so that he gets offered it’s HC job when one of his protege’s is now the HC and leans on both him and Jimmy Johnson from time to time.
May I congratulate you on a level of stupidity seldom seen in one’s lifetime. Many of us had heard that there were levels of idiocy seldom witnessed by the eyes of modern man…but now you have made believers out of us who thought it nothing more than myth.

Would have posted earlier, been too busy choking down 33 servings of humble pie.
Damn…we got BLASTED !!
First, with both CU & Miami, I think our O-Line was up against superior DE & DT talent. Both games GT O-Line was getting blasted off the line (esp last night)so much that I think the O-Line started giving up on blocking in early 3rd Qtr.
Second, give it to Miami O-Line.
Harris had all night to throw.
Boy do we miss our 3 D-Line guys from 2008.
Third, secondary coverage was the unbelievably bad.
Not sure what coverage scheme Wommack was running.
Also didnt see any adjustments in Pass D.
Unbelievable how open so many Miami WRs were.
Third, QB Coach Bohannon needs to work better with Josh.
It just looks “deer-in-the-headlights” when he’s passing.
D-Lineman Robert Hall on cructches is VERY bad news.
REALLY REALLY glad Roddy Jones didnt break his neck on the face plant.
Jeeezz that looked dangerously bad.
Fatigue or not, when TV showed DE Morgan on the bench at start of 2nd Qtr looking totally gassed, I started worrying…for good reason.
I think I’ll give FSU a little more slack on the JaxSt game. Might be a better BYU-FSU game than I was guessing.
As CPJ has said before…”Physical superiority trumps theory.”
I dont believe its a bad offense, just not all the right/optimal players in place.
UNC game looms VERY LARGE here.

What a bunch of tools.
And by the way, it’s one loss. Anyone looking realistically at the schedule figured this was going to be a tough game. The true measure of this team and Paul Johnson will be how they respond next week against UNC at home. I still predict Tech will be 8-3 and UGA 7-4 come the last weekend in November.

Why all the Nesbitt hate? The running game has no chance when the defense is playing in Tech’s backfield. And, I thought he looked good last night passing. But the degree of difficulty on the passes is going to hinder the passing game. Short passes over the middle are clearly the way to keep defenses honest and help give the RB’s room to make plays. Where’s the Run and Shoot? Another thing that would help is not letting LB’s and DB’s come flying into the backfield untouched. How many missed blocks have there been this year? The answer is alot. Which leads me to believe the players have given up on CPJ. How many times did an A-back not bump a defender or go for the cut block and not even get a hand on the defender. There’s only a couple explanations for that. Either the defenders are all Barry Sanders and can juke and jive amazingly well, the players did not receive proper coaching, or the players are not giving their all. I think the players do not trust the coach and the coaches have not done a good enough job to motivate the players. Something is wrong this year, because even last year, when the team clearly didn’t know what it was doing, they were busting their tails. This year, they look like they don’t care. Maybe the ego was inflated and they needed to lose before getting focused, but something has gotta change. I don’t know what, but I think short/medium passes over the middle would be a good start, especially when the defense is leaving it wide open.

1) what is the big deal about 3 games in 13 days? A normal “run” is 3 games in 15 days. 3 in 13 sounds bad but in reality it’s nothing, especially when one of the 3 is fcs (and fcs fresh out of d2)
2) having observed the ham-bone for almost 2 decades as an avid gsu eagle, 1 thing is certain. when johnson’s team gets down by 3 or more scores it’s pretty much over. this offense can’t overcome big deficits. we didn’t face it very much in statesboro and he hasn’t faced it much at tech yet. the o will be fine, except when you get behind big.

…”why was tech’s d-line gassed in the first half? do they have 0 depth?”
You are thinking clearly. Tech played 3 games in 13 days and won 2 of 3, and lost to one of the two stronger opponents. It’s not the end of the world. We will have 10 days before UNC at home.
The entire team, both lines, the secondary, running backs…all had weak legs and there was an overall lack of stamina and energy. They were also faced with a team that had 10 days to rest and prepare, with players that were bigger, stronger and faster. Tech must play with smaller players who are hopefully quicker and better prepared to be competitive. But accumulated team fatigue, plus short sleep from the period of first quizes and travel led to a near collapse. The team was obviously out of gas, but they at least played with heart and never gave up. These young men gave it their best, and they will improve noticeable with a chance to get some rest. Paul Johnson’s offense (and Dryer and Nesbitt) had no chance in the face of a dominating, faster and stronger Miami defense line that prevented any chance of offense plays being executed. Again, some rest and these men and Johnson’s offense will again be effective and winning games. Be patient, it’s just a season start at 2-1.

Yes, good point Duh. Tech had a full week to prepare for Miami. The days were a little off, but a full week of preparation nonetheless. i think that the issues is the offense mostly.
too one demensional and not on the field long enough.
performance wise josh sure looks a whole lot like reggie ball. i actually think that reggie ball is a better passer. reggie ball and josh nesbitt were both recruited by chan ( i cant develop no damned qb) gailey.
until we have a qb that can at least complete 50% of his passes we will be in trouble. if we had a legit passing threat last nite we would not be talking about this offense not being viable. right now we dont.
navy runs this o and they looked just fine against osu. osu didnt exactly fold against usc so i think that makes the point.
josh nesbitt should never ever ever pass a fb again. EVER!
it probably wouldnt have made a difference last night but i wonder if having debo available wouldnt have helped. while he is not the athlete that josh is he is a more complete qb. at least his passing has accuracy.
while our d last night was not very good, it certainly would have benefited from a few long drives by the o. our d was exhausted once again. on the field tooooooo long imo.

CPJ knows how to fix his offense when it doesn’t work. It just might take a little time…If I were a GT fan, my main concern is the QB. He has not shown the ability to set his feet before a throw, look for a secondary receiver or read defenses at a high level…
Tech and UGA will both hover around 9-3 this season…

I honestly believe this offense in itself can compete with anyone (hear me out). However, I also believe the primary reason for Tech’s offensive woes lie with the QB. True, mis-direction of the run is the backbone of this offense, however, if the QB had even a remotely decent arm and accuracy opponents would think twice about stacking the line and the run game wouldn’t be as suffocated. In all fairness to the running game, the offensive line also has to get better in creating openings. With such a deep stable of backs and a highly touted WR in Hill to compliment a NFL talent in Thomas, there’s no reason the offense can’t be more balanced…which points the finger back at Nesbitt.
Next, the defensive line has to be able to put pressure on the QB. Derrick Morgan has tremendous talent but even he can’t do it all by himself. The line couldn’t even get close to Harris, much less get pressure on him. We also saw this against Clemson. Harris had all day to evaluate the field without worrying about the defensive line. He’s been praised for his ability to remain calm throughout the game…well, with the way his line protected him he had good reason to remain calm. But to his credit, he’s got quite an arm and accuracy. IMO, Tech needs to get better athletes. I honestly believe LSU whooped us in the trenches during the Chick-Fil-A bowl because our athletes just couldn’t compete with the speed and size of LSU (and for that matter, probably most SEC teams, with the exception of Georgia, apparently
.
The secondary also needs to step up. I believe in our players are quick enough to cover most people, though they may lack size, so I would tend to point the finger at the defensive coach. Last year, the defense had multiple NFL talent which made coaching a little easier but so far this year, I haven’t been too impressed; too many wide open receivers.
Finally…SPECIAL TEAMS! What on earth is going on with our special teams?? An oversnapped ball led to a safety TWO weeks in a row now. That’s unacceptable. I’ll just keep this one shorter and say we need a punter who can punt farther than 27 yards, and a kicker who can kick farther out than ~40 yards. Whatever momentum the offense finally is able to conjure up is quickly dissipated by the fact that they have to run 1-2 more plays to get the kicker almost within the redzone for a field goal.
Overall, is that a fair assessment?

You know what I think? I think Amazed has been the most right so far – it doesn’t matter what offense you run if your quarterback can’t even get the snap off without having his ankles hit by the D-Line destroying the interior O-Line.
Know what else? I think UGAy fans have enough to worry about with their own team (giving up 37 points to South Carollina, who only scored 7 on NC State) that maybe they shouldn’t be over here talking so much about our issues.

And while we’re at it, there were SIX days from Saturday Sept. 5th to Thursday Sept. 10. So that’s 13 days and in that 13 days the stupid teckies played THREE games.

Habersham Dawg is right. No excuses for last night. We got our hindquarters handed to us on a silver platter. Beat in every way, shape and form. We couldn’t run any type of offense behind that pitiful O line. And the Defensive line is pathetic at best.

uga had 243 yards of total offense against OKST. Why did no one blame their offensive system? uga improved from that game and I think we can too. Miami is a good team. They had 10 days to prepare. We have a lot of ground to make up. But I don’t think it is the system. PJ’s offense, like any other system, has been shut down at times. Tennesee held uga to similar numbers two years in a row and no one was ready to toss Richt out on his ear. Our coach has a proven track record of winning. Our team has not executed at the level we all expect. With or without this system, Paul Johnson is a good football coach. Losses breed doubts. We have lots of improving to do. I, for one, think we can. I, for one, don’t mind questioning the coaching decisions or execution…. when you lose, something obviously could have been done better.
It has taken Randy Shannon into his 4th year to get Miami back to prominence. They are a better program than they have been in a long time and the Integrity level and class is at a place I have never seen at Miami. Thank God they didn’t fire him when the chips were down. A little patience can reap great rewards. Let’s be patient, shall we, instead of making judgements two weeks into 12 week season.

LOL, this is comical. Look here man. UGA played OK St on 9/5. UGA played South Carolina on 9/12. UGA will play Arkansas on 9/19. 3 games -15 days.
Tech played 3 games in 13 days which admittedly is somewhat of a disadvantage. But much less so when you factor in who Tech’s first opponent was. Tech didn’t spend any time getting ready for Jacksonville St. All summer should have been spent getting ready for Clemson. Then Tech had a full week to get ready for Miami. And now Tech has more than a week to get ready for UNC.

Funny how all of you GT fans were blwoing the ESPN bogs up yesterday, and now you’re hunkered down in the Journal looking for answers. I pretty sure that I speak for all Canes fan when I say that I hope you do, so that way we look that much better for serving that @$$ whooping last night. I don’t know that this loss is an indictment against PJ and his offense as much as it is our o-line and d-line.
Miami’s D-Line dominated our O-Line. Miami’s O-Line dominated our D-Line. Their QB is good enough to make throws when given 5-8 seconds each time, and their WRs are fast enough to get open given 5-8 seconds, especially if we are running a zone or man-to-man on one of them.
It has nothing to do with “figuring out” Paul Johnson’s offense. No offense would have had 100 yards rushing with the way our line played last night. No offense could have moved the ball passing either. No defense could have contained Miami’s passing offense with the little pressure we were getting on Harris.
It’s that simple. It all starts on the line and ours had a really bad game on both sides of the ball. Any system would have lost the game.

I kinda roughed up Tech some earlier today, but I’m not here to do that now. Tech has issues just like Georgia has issues. the stars really have to line up right and your roster has to be full of special players to win 11-12 games. Tech is not there. Georgia is not there. I think Tech fans realize this is only year two.
Johnson needs depth and some upgrade at certain positions. I do think he need to improve his passing game. If you’re only going to throw 12 times or so a game, you need complete 8 or so. Tech’s passing game works WHEN THEY DON’T HAVE TO PASS. The offense is feast or famine.
Tech must upgrade both line to WIN 11-12 games.

I’ve seen several comments about CPJ’s “are you stupid” comment caught on camera. Every football coach I had from age 12 on up would’ve said the same if not worse to us. This is football not dance class.
This team has played with intensity for only two quarters this entire season, that’s it. It’s time to see what kind of coach Johnson really is. I think he’s up to the task. My question, is Wommack? It’s hard to recall a defense that looked as bad as Tech’s did last night.
Did we even touch Jacory Harris last night?

What is very perplexing is the way that Tech players seem to lack energy, are tired in the 1st quarter and don’t give a lot of effort. If the GT players got tired in the scrimmage against JaxSt, then how in the world did they come out of the gate against Clemson and score 24 points in the first qtr? Oh I remember. The offense scored 10 points, the special teams scored 7, and the refs gave them 7 on an illegal play. Then they come out and drive the ball 45 yards in 10 plays against Miami for three points and now they are tired. Good grief what a bunch of whiners!!

I disagree with all the fans that say the triple option has been figured out. It has been figured out for years both how to run it and how to stop it. Miami’s fron 7 was better than GT’s OL same as LSU.
The DEs managed to get in the backfield which takes away one pitchman, leaving the back pitchman to string it out to the sideline if possible where quick LBs can run him down, or forcing the QB up the center. Assuming the DE does not just get to the QB before a play can be made. The passing game was not generating enough to force Miami to drop people into coverage.
H.S. Offense? please point to a team that runs it.

Any coach deserved time to build his program. This offense under CPJ has yet to see a functional offensive line, and that will take time. He won 9 games last year because of a strong D line and an offense that was sometimes spectular and other times sputtering. What I saw during the Clemson game was what I feared – way too much time for an opposing qb to throw. Everyone has swallowed to koolaid too quickly, and 7-8 wins is reasonable this year. I have confidence this will all be fine, and the rivalry is ugay is back on. Go Gators !!!

It amazes some of you get sucked into this black hole that Mark Bradley and Company starts every time the Jackets have a bad game, saying the Paul Johnson’s offense may be to blame, which is intended to give the Bulldog nation something to feel good so they can jump up and down on it like they have something to throw nasty comments about GA Tech.
It takes their mind off of the fact that Georgia got beat by Oklahoma State, a team that got beat by Houston; it takes their mind off of the fact that Georgia gave up nearly 40 points to South Carolina, at UGA no less, to a team that barely beat NC State and which scored less than 17 points against them; and it takes their mind off of the fact that they’re headed to Arkansas to play a pretty good Bobby Petrino team (that makes me want to throw up in my mouth) that has a good shot at beating them and sending the Georgia Bulldogs home to Athens with 1 win and 2 losses.
GA Tech’s players have just come off of a hard summer of practice, classes started and then three games in 12 days, with the third game being an away game with a team that had played one game 10 days prior, was playing at home, and knew how to play on that horrible field. Also, give Miami some credit; they have a really good team.
Give the Jackets some credit, too. At the end of the first half, they could have been down 17 – 10 if the Roddy Jones touchdown run wouldn’t have been called back. Keeping the game close may have changed the entire complexity of the game; we’ll never know.
What we got out of the game is that Josh Nesbitt can pass the ball; Demaryius Thomas can catch the ball; GA Tech has a punter who can get the ball out there; and Orwin Smith can return kickoffs.
So now we can wait and see if the team can catch its collective breath, trying to heal from all of the cuts and scrapes from that awful field and bumps and bruises from the tough game against Miami, and refocus their energy back at what will make them the team that they want to be, in spite of what all of the naysayers may be throwing out there about them.
Let’s give the boys a couple of days to rest up and get their feet back under them before we give up on them and please, Jacket fans, don’t get caught up by Mark Bradley and Company trolling for controversy. The bulldog nation doesn’t need the headlines to insult the team, and any of you buying in to it, or responding to their taunting, just adds to their fun.
We have a game to get ready for a week from Saturday, and they have a game to start get ready for tomorrow. They can either strut around like peacocks or pout like babies after the game against Arkansas, depending on the score, and it won’t make a difference to me. It won’t matter one iota on how I will feel about my Yellow Jackets.

GA Tech Insider, that was a very warm, tender, heart-felt and insightful message. Shucks, I actually teared up twice while reading it. You are right. It was the brutal schedule of having to play so many games in such a short time frame. The crummy field condition was also a huge factor and affected GT much more than the Canes. The penalty on the touchdown play was not fair at all. GT has a phenomenal team and should go all the way to the Orange Bowl. It’s not fair, doggone it. You can’t satisfy everyone. That’s magnified a 10,000 fold in the national sports spotlight. Some want so badly for the option to work and some said it will never work. It’s always going to be game to game debate over this until it proves itself in one way or the other. One great game and all the bandwagoners speak volumes on CPJ. One bad game and all the naysayers proclaim, ” I told you so”. Only time will tell. It’s CPJ’s second season nad there’s a lot to prove. Look at Michigan. They stunk it up last year and now they beat ND this year. Granted who knows how good ND is but they did win.
Systems like the the spread and the option take time to install and run effectively. They also need players that fit the two. Rodriques and Johnson had to totally revamp their teams. They’re just starting to find the talent to make their system’s work.
There are going to be a lot of mistakes with CPJ due to a foreign offense all being thrown at these guys. As with all sports, I want greatness now. It doesn’t work that way with CPJ’s offense. He’s said it before, it’s going to take a couple of years to make it work. He has to have the right people to run the offense to perfection.
Last year’s success may have been too much for GT to handle. Now everyone expects the team to be world beaters. Our OL still is an issues, obviously!!! Just like any other offense, if you don’t block you’re not going to be successful. Last night was proof of that.
Us GT fans just have to be patient. We’ve seen glimpses of greatness. To all you nayayers, only time will tell. Don’t sell it out just yet. Two 1/2 games doesn’t prove anything. Just look at what Navy did to OSU. Of course, they’ve been running it for years now.

Yep, GT loses, the Dawg fans on the level of the GT Trolls come out and throw it right back in there faces, while the most guilty ones aren’t even showing their faces due to embarrassment.
Why don’t the guilty GT trolls just face the plate of crow in front of them and move on? It is one game. If you all fold after one game, your team is not talented, your coaching staff is less talented and you need to accept that. If you have any balls under that stinger of yours, your team, your fans and the smack talk might be able to step up and stand up for yourself.
If not, well… you got a long year ahead.
As for throwing out the bogus BS about UGA and their games played? Sounds like a teenager who thinks he is being witty and smart, when in fact, it is sad.
We shall see what UGA is made of. But before you whine about 12 or 13 days, UGA started on the road at Stillwater, and are playing on the road at Fayetteville, not the closes venues to play in. Travel takes a little out of a team, by the way, and is part of the game.
So quit making excuses, whining and just support your team. Trying to flame back at the trolls just fuels the fire. But then again, I probably am talking to 18 year olds and this won’t make sense.
The hell with Tech, Go Dawgs! But I say that as a fan.

Not even Deon in his Prime Time could cover a WR if the QB had all day to throw. No pass rush = lots of yards and points. Our secondary played pretty well last year because we had mor ethan one person that could sack the QB.

Mark B,
It may be a stretch to say PJ takes things personally. He’s a little more thick-skinned than that.
Granted, this is the offense he created so any questions of it are in essence questions of him.
Tech’s offense had a good first drive. Does that mean Miami made adjustments after that? No. What it means — and this is quite unusual, applying this word to anything the Hurricanes do — is their discipline on defense was strictly enforced. Tech missed some blocks, yes, but Miami carried out its assignments better than just about anybody else who has faced Tech in PJ’s 16 games on The Flats.
It’s disingenuous to say anyone has “figured out” the option. You don’t “figure it out.” There is no special formula. It’s a matter of adhering to your assignments, play in and play out. Teams that do that stand a better chance against than teams that don’t. Teams that don’t get 472 rushing yards dropped on them.
But the larger questions shouldn’t be for Tech’s offense. They should be reserved for Tech’s defense, or the rather faint copy of it that played Thursday night. Jacory Harris had enough time back there to take a differential equations final. He could be calm and poised because there was no pressure, at least none applied by a Tech pass rush that wasn’t close to being a figment of the imagination.

And as for CPJ’s “Are you stupid?” comment … Let’s hear from Coach Dan Hawkins of the Colorado Buffalos.
“Go play intramurals, brother.”
Good Lord. PJ didn’t question his ancestry or orientation. He asked him a simple question. He didn’t call him stupid. He asked him if he was stupid.
And getting a false start penalty on a two-point play when the snap count never really changes is kinda dumb.
Not Disappointed!

Miami did a wonderufl Job and are back! We missed some good opportunities to score and calls didn’t help, but they won. The quarterback appears to be calm and doesn’t make many mistakes.
Nesbit made some good throws that weren’t caught. Even our star receiver dropped a few ones.
Good luck Miami and I hope they win it all! They looked that good. Represent the ACC!
Good weekend all! “Die Hard Jackets for Life!”…….

nerds,
I told you last year that the re-up of Paula’s contract was gonna look premature after the ‘09 6-6 campaign…..why don’t you listen to ya daddy????? Last years (actually the Bowl) LSU game was not an aberation….the SEASON was the aberation. The triple fumble offense is no secret…and is VERY defensible. If not for UGA’s tackling like a middle school team (a spoon fed gift to the nerds), the dawgs should have won that game (vs. Yech) by 20. Blind hog luck on Tech’s part.

Give Miami credit for doing one thing last night — and this word is almost never associated with things that happen at “The U” — its discipline on defense. They stuck to their assignments. Tech’s opening drive was good. After that, it wasn’t the Canes making an adjustment. It was sticking to their assignments (coupled with some shoddy blocking).
It’s disingenuous to say anyone has “figured out” the offense. You don’t “figure it out” anymore than you do any other offense. It’s the option, and you defend it by sticking to your assignments, play in and play out. Teams that do that have more success than teams that don’t. Teams that don’t get 472 rushing yards dropped on them.
The questions in the aftermath of the debacle at Mediocre Beer Stadium (which reminds me … Corona Light? What are the rest of the girls in the sorority having?) shouldn’t be for the offense. They need to be reserved for a defense that offered a feeble at best resistance. Jacory Harris had enough time to read the health care reform bill back there, all 1,000 pages. He was calm and poised because Tech introduced no pressure upon him, in any way, shape or form.
Tech’s offense will be fine. The defense is another question altogether.

I’ve watched GT the last two weeks. This is not a hard O to D against. The main trust of the O is the surge of the line. The entire offense scheme is to take the legs out of the D line. One thing I noticed last night was the U was letting the line commit to their blocks then surging to the line. Simply back the D line back a step or two or hold the surge on a count, by then the line has committed to the blocks and the backs are in their holes. The U met them in the back field numerous times.
It’s not execution, it’s D Coordinators figuring the O out!

If you will recall, I predicted this last year and you and everyone else called me everything but a Christian.
All the world hates an I told you so guy, but I told you so—-so go ahead and hate me.
UM may play on a lousy field, but both teams were on the same field so that dont wash. Niether does having to come of a hard working training camp. UM had a hard camp also. New O & D cordinators, so had to learn new schemes. All CPJ did with his new system last year was make excuses about players having to learn new system.—-But wait till next year, we always make giant steps of improvement after our 1st year.
Lets face it the big schools with good atheletes have caught on to defenseing CPJ foot ball. Especially when you have a QB that cant pass.
I hated loseing to UM but what was embarasseing was the way we played—that and the fact tha CPJ lost his cool and called a player stupid. Such an action was an admission that he did a poor job of coaching, and was blameing his players istead of maning up to who was really stupid.
I could go on and on about this but i am sure it would go over most of the loyalist heads.
By the way, what ever happened to Ken Thrash. Haven heard from him in years.

Once upon a time, coaching really smart V. Basketball kids at a local prep school, i yanked a somewhat typically rattled substitute who just did something I had specifically coached him not to do. I leaned over to his ear and quietly asked him, ” was he really stupid or had he just disobeyed me?” He briefly hesitated, then responded,” Im just stupid,Coach.” thus proving how smart he was. Normal and and appropriate for the ? that Coach Johnson asked. Just have to be careful these days about when and how to ask the question.

I honestly did not think we would win last night just hoping, it was a blessing we beat them the last two times at Miami…but I do hope we beat UNC at home. Was in Chapel Hill last yr and hated to see how badly we played and Nesbitt go down. Want to see us win that one badly. I’m for Paul Johnson and support him no matter what we do this season. The only thing I have questions about is Wommack, my Gamecock friends tell me he was fired at USC by Spurrier ..maybe Spurrier is the one wrong on that decision, who knows…All I do know is that GT has given the basketball coach more than enough time and I can’t take anymore of it regardless of the outcome of this upcoming season…

Pi$$onaDawg, UGA has just as many issues as Tech and that’s a fact. I will be the very first to admit that a win in Fayetteville would totally shock me but hey – it’s a highly emotional game where virtually anything can happen and that’s one of the reasons why I follow NCAA football. Please, please let it rest about playing 3 games within a 12 day period. Other teams played 3 games within a 15 day period so your case doesn’t hold much water. Yes, UGA recruits many 4 & 5 star players but hasn’t a clue (in most cases) regarding what to do with them. There’s a fundamental reason why programs like Florida and Alabama succeed – the coaching staff knows what to do with the talent at hand and they are extremely serious about winning. Richt, Bobo & Martinez simply don’t (consistently) get it. The jury is still out on Johnson because he’s fielding mostly Gailey recruits. My point is that the GT fans bought into the hype and expected this team to [snicker] come out on top and even contend for the nation title. I think you drank the yellow koolaid as well. We’ll see how the rest of the season pans out. I know one thing for sure – GT & UGA will lose about 3 more games each this year so it should be an interesting game in November.

PAT name 1 team that has played 3 games in 12 days against 2 of their conference foes. NAME 1. Not the UGA playing USC and Vandy type of game, but the type of teams that have a chance of playing for the league championship. Last year Clemson was ranked HIGH, Miami will be ranked high this year. Yes, Clemson was the ACC’s UGA last year, but they are better this year. I think Miami will be the ACC’s Bama this year bit that is weeks away with a lot of wins on the way.

First our Defense has to get better. Maybe more pressure rush extra LB or 3-4. Also need to get #21 when back more one on one on the outside.
Maybe most important we have to pass the ball to keep these defenses honest. Nesibitt-Bam Bam on the 56 yard TD pass fantastic. We still had a long shot at the end. An option “expert” told me these long passes are needed to keep the defense honest and pin the DB’s back. Once we get this passing game effect option should open up more. Nesbitt on the rollout with option of passing or running seems. Miami shut our running game down 40 carries for 95 yards. Miami looked awfully good.

Pi$$, what is THAT supposed to mean? Please run your warped thoughts through a logic device before posting!! Is SC not a conference foe? Does Spurrier not focus most of his summer training on a game scheme to beat UGA? Was OSU not loaded to the gills with talent? Hey, look back about this time last year when Clemson was ranked fairly highly and then went into the ATL Dome to have their butts handed to them compliments of Nick Saban et al. You’re all over the place, Pi$$ – sort of like a fly on horse $H!t. It seems that you want to blame your schedule on the fact that GT was sucking wind even in the 1st quarter. The truth is that Miami ran their butts off with their better game plan. If your team was worth the #14 ranking then it should have demonstrated a lot more will to win on the field. Instead, it got embarrassed by UM and the game was over in the 2nd quarter. GT just gave up and folded like a cheap suit. At least UGA fought for all 4 quarters against OSU and SC. Face it – GT has an undersized OL & DL. You’re in for a disappointing season, Pi$$. VT will absolutely clean your clock – likely worse than Florida will clean ours.

In other words, if GT had had the normal time to prepare for the game (based upon the total disaster that we all witnessed last night) are you actually entertaining the delusion that GT would have come out on top? What in the fork are you smoking??????

Habersham Dawg, cut the little girl some slack. She still has her panties all bunched up over the total beat-down of the North Avenue Trade School back in (2002?) when both Greene & Pollack were playing. I remember the score at 48 – 0 before UGA put in ALL of their scrubs and graciously allowed GT to score late in the game. She still has issues over that game so just keep that in mind. I think she’s on some very strong meds after seeing Miami whip the ever-loving bee $h!t out of GT. Please allow Pi$$ enough time to heal – she’s such a pansy and you’ll just make her pi$$ her little panties and then be spanked hard for doing it. Let’s just give her some time. Okay?

Jon, we would normally not do this but since your rabid GT fans delight in rubbing UGA’s nose in it on OUR blogs we just thought we’d return the favor. The GT – UGA game is usually a rivalry game but this year it will be total war. After stringing 7 in a row on your pathetic school, you manage to defeat UGA by a mere 3 points and GIVE EACH TECH PLAYER A RING. It seems that the game against UGA means a whole lot more to you clowns. Seriously – a ring for beating your in-state rival? By 3 points? By assistance from the ref’s because of UGA’s end zone dance against UF? If that gives you satisfaction then I feel sorry for you – I really do. Good luck after being caned by the Canes!!! Heh heh.

It’s clear by reading the majority of posts not too many understand football! If you watched and studied the game you would notice a large number of mis assignment. The spread or triple option (pick a name) is dependent on everyone making their blocks and making their reads. This is not happening. You can pick your reason. It’s either bad execution or the athletes asked to execute can’t? I read a bunch of BS about this offense is “figured out” the offense is “no longer a secret” etc, etc, etc,! Execute the offense the way it’s suppose to be done and it works. Don’t and you get what happened Thursday night. The loss of Jaybo Shaw has contributed more to the early season offensive woes than expected. Josh Nesbitt is not improved over last season. Not having Shaw to bring in when the offense is not clicking is hurting.
And for the puppy dawg fans! Boost and take all the shots you want! And your so vocal about UGA barely beating S. Carolina and their massive offense? Neither UGA or GT is showing they deserve to be ranked at this point! Talk trash all you want but a real football fan sees their team for what they are!

If a state is to be divided up b/w rivals and 2 of 3 stink stank stunk, then 1 will be oh-so-dominate. See UF and Urban Meyer. Don’t you think the Pac-10 is pulling for UCLA to become relevant?

Your childish rambling reply aptly confirms that you have’nt a clue. Let’s put it this way …if you were a light-bulb…you’d have to be changed. You know nothing of recruiting or the history of the schools in Florida.
Here’s a list of suggestions that should help you going forward :
(1) Go get that GED.
(2) Join the local library
(3) Listen to public radio…apparently all that sports-talk radio has rubbed off on your brain.
(4) Go find out why everyone is talking about Northern Wyoming.
(5) Pay attention when you get back in remedial reading.
(6)Tell your parents that you are sorry for failing them.
(7) Realize that loud and clueless is no way to go through life.
(8) Next time when you are at work ..pay attention when powdering the donuts
(9) Realize that lighting farts DOES NOT impress girls.
(10) Stay off blogs until you get that GED and actually FINISH reading a book which does not contain pictures.

NerdKnocker, face it…embrace IT! GT beating uga last year is KILLING you! You haven’t come out to blog since! I KNOW this, because everything you listed in your reasoning has been covered several times over. Let me catch you up:
1. Your fellow mutts don’t consider Tech to be a rival due to the lopsided win/loss ratio. (Of course, all the comments from pup fans would suggest otherwise.
2. Tech is irrelevant. Tough to argue with sometimes. With the exception, of course, that we have twice the number of national championships as the leg humpers and the fact that blogs about us are soaked by ‘dawg drool’.
3.Tech OWNS the longest winning streak between the two teams….if you didn’t know; it’s eight in a row. SO close!
4. The Rings? Well, those were a gift from a bowl whose invitation we’d accepted (We know the outcome of that game…your friends have been MOST faithful in reminding us…it’s ALL they’ve had all season). The seniors requested the score of the Tech/uga victory….yes, they were excited about going out with a ‘w’….but, they were also celebrating the preservation of The Streak.
5. The game means MORE to us than it does to the ball lickers from athens?! You bitches retired a jersey after you ended the streak…and you want to make a big deal about some rings?!
6. I’ve NEVER heard a group of fans complain MORE about officiating than you flea bags! Thanks for supporting this assertion…. “the refs suck”…. “too many injuries”…. blah, blah, blah
Yeah, the Canes opened up a can on us! They will prove to be a tough team to reckon with for their future opponents! Don’t you, dare, make the mistake of thinking that the hounds are at the same level of the ‘U’…not even close… not by several national championships! Catch up to us…work your way up the ladder… they’re on the rung above us.

I don’t know how you retool an under performing offensive line. Reggie Bush would have a hard time getting 10 yards behind this O Line. I don’t know if they were tired (??), hurt, or just not good. Dwyer could get yards, if he had some room to run, but the opposing D lines look like a German pincer movement clogging everything up around the center. If Nesbit had the protection Harris had, he and Dwyer could have both been stars in this game.
This will be the tactic used by every team we play now and they will continue to use this tactic, unless CPJ finds an answer, and if he can’t find an answer, he might as well put the seniors on bench and start playing freshmen and sophomores.
Unfortunately the same can be said about our D line. We have one good player, the others just don’t have the power, skills, or speed to get into the backfield and apply pressure. A one man D line just ain’t gonna cut it.
In my opinion, the Miami game was lost on both sides of the ball in the trenches, just like LSU, and almost Clemson.

What I noticed Dawghater, is that minus 2 special teams TDs against Clemson GT is 1-3 from their last 4 games and your offense has scored a total of 36 points in the 3 games against teams not named Jville St. It doesn’t take a football genius to see what that says about the “great” Paul Johnson and the effectiveness of his offense after that 5 loss SEC team beat you down and then showed everyone else how to do it. And then there’s your defense. And then there’s the total lack of fight shown by your team. Then there’s the sorry physical conditioning. Go ahead Tech fans. Keep those lips locked to the butt of a guy that only beat 4 teams with winning records in SIX years at Navy. By the end of this season you guys are going to be one pizzed off fan base. You been had. Brian Jones IF a frog had wings he wouldn’t bump his azz. IF Brian Jones knew squat about football he would realize that GT couldn’t execute because the Miami D was better and more athletic. IF Brian Jones had more than a room temperature IQ he would realize that no defense is just going to stand there so GT’s substandard blockers can hit a target that’s not moving. IF Brian Jones knew sh%t about football he’d see all that.

Offense…..Stretch the field 20 to 30 times per game with Bam-Bam and Hill getting one on one opportunities mostly deep and med. range but some short range….Run 30 to 50 times per game opening up option. Gety Dwyer a lead blocker and out on the corner more. Defense…Get a 3 and 4th LB in there. 3/4 or 4/3 with pressure rush and confusion to offense. Force turnovers. Mostly play aggressive not passive. We still had a outside chance to win against Miami after not playing well most of game at the end.

I think early in the season you will have teams like Clemson and Miami that devoted a lot of time over the summer preparing for Tech. As the season wears on teams will not be able to do that because they have other big games to worry about.

Obviously Nesbitt is not an effective passer. Once CPJ gets his option quarterback in place he will be able to make the necessary adjustments to his offense. Judgement of this offense should not be made until it is in place at least three years. CPJ is still an excellent coach. We will be alright.

And now it appears that UGA will beat the hell out of GT this year. Nesbitt can’t pass a lick and no way GT’s secondary can cover all those receivers UGA put on display last night. Cox will stand back there all night and pick GT apart. Paul Johnson should be called out on this teams conditioning as well. UGA’s defenders, especially the DBs have run miles this season and they have yet to look gassed. Something is bad wrong on the flats this year.

Sorry guys, our team needs a lot of work. CPJ said the offense would be better this year – not true, not even close. And the defense is awful. Make all the excuses you want, but there are serious issues. The next 4 games look really tough, yes that includes Miss St, which is prime time on their field.
Call em like I see em. We’re in trouble. 6-6 or 7-5 this year. Hope I’m wrong, but I doubt it. CPJ is starting to come across cocky and mean.

I hate to say this. It appears that teams are begining to learn how to defend Tech’s offense. Tech has looked pathetic on offense since the second half of the Clemson game. I have a strong feeling that Tech will only win 6 games this year. It is just horrible that our football season can’t be like it was in 2008. I firmly believe that 2008 was a fluke. All signs point that way.
VegasGT

GT’s offense has actually looked quite pathetic since the LSU game with moments of greatness. The Miami game was especially troubling given the number of missed blocks. I think that can be easily corrected, at least much more easily than the defense. The defense, or lack thereof, was embarrassing.
I think the offense will get itself sorted out and execute better. That is the key to any offense, execution. This offense will only work when executed properly. It just happens to be a harder defense to execute and, hence, defend.
The defense needs some serious work though.
And JJ – you might want to look at your math, it’s 12 days 4 hours from start of game 1 to start of game 3, you can’t include both the start day and the finish day, but nice try. That being said, it wasn’t purely the number of days, but more the type of games that were played, especially the Clemson game. The team should have been better conditioned.
