Most teams can lose and have it just be a loss. When Georgia Tech loses, it’s an indictment of Paul Johnson. This mightn’t be fair, but it’s reality: When your stock in trade is a stylized offense, any reversal is going to be personalized. And Paul Johnson, as we know, tends to take things personally.
As noted earlier, he delights in flouting conventional wisdom, especially when it comes to his offense. Well, that offense just managed 95 yards rushing against Miami — 377 fewer than it did against the same Hurricanes 10 months ago. Yes, Jonathan Dwyer got hurt early, but Tech was supposed to have increased depth in the backfield, was it not?
So now Johnson will have to hear this topic bandied about in both cyberspace and the real world: Has the rest of college football caught on to his spread option? And he’s going to say no, that the offense if run properly will always work against any opponent, but how he wearies of the whole discussion and turns testy?
The loss to Miami was far more comprehensive than the Chick-fil-A thrashing by LSU. That game could be explained away — and Johnson tried — as a failure of motivation and special teams. The offense, he would say, wasn’t at fault. Well, this time it was. The offense did nothing. The defense did less. The Jackets trailed by 14 points at the half and by 23 after three quarters, and now nobody’s really sure what to make of Tech.
“I think we’re going to be good,” Johnson said a couple of weeks ago, but the near-flop against Clemson and the total collapse against Miami have left everything open to question. And next comes North Carolina, which came closest to shutting down that offense last season, and dates with Florida State and Virginia Tech — and yes, with Georgia — still remain.
A cult of personality has arisen ’round Johnson. Tech fans love his tough talk, and they loved it even more when he beat Georgia. But now his highly regarded team has suffered a major blow, and it’s incumbent on PJ not to take the inevitable questions — from both fans and media — as signs of insubordination.
He gets paid a lot of money to coach his team. Here’s where PJ has to duck his head, ignore the chatter and keep coaching.

It would not surprise me if Miami went undefeated. Harris is scary good. 33-17 was brutal. But we did score. I’m not ready to fold up shop. If we blocked and did not miss any assignments and still got stopped, I would be concerned about the system. I think our o-line can block better and our skill players can execute better with blocking and making plays. I’m very concerned about our defense. Very concerned.
I think the team does not have an emotional leader amongst the players. They need a Darryl Richard in there and I don’t think they have it.

SJ-as I have repeated on numerous occasions…shoddy tackling of which even MR has admitted as ultimate downfall of Dawgs technique, edge and execution.
Hey I for one give CPJ his props and respect his coaching but as stated this is a significant step-up in athletes on all sides of the ball.
Key to me is not the offense that is the problem it is Tech’s defense that has not impressed me even in beating the Dawgs. Giving up 400+ and 6 TD’s through the air is putting alot of pressure on your O. Dawgs 3 TO’s w a pick 6 definitly helped the cause.
Same mantra week in and out if Dawgs don’t reverse the TO ratio we (UGA fans) will be lamenting a L to the Hogs.

FSU had to score in the last 31 seconds to beat Jacksonville State! With that being said Miami’s D might be a little worse than we thought. They will not stop the option and Tech D get to the QB.
Tech wins in a rout 42-10
How did that rout work out for you? 42-10… SERIOUSLY? And it was UM taking GT too lightly? What do ya’ll have in the water up there in GA?

Here you have assembled this team around this style of offense, and its not exactly blowing teams away. Paul Johnson, you can’t blame your team all the time. Much of the criticism falls on you. You need to figure out how to adjust things to make this work. If that means mixing more of the pass in, make it happen. Figure it out, its your offense.

Did y’all notice how little we pitched to the A-back after the one TD off of the pitch last week. All the plays were a lame attempt at the pass or Dwyer up the middle. I think this was to keep Nesbit from getting hit too much and to keep Miami from scheming the option. I predict Dwyer will get less carries and the A-backs will run wide against Miami. Prepare for some long runs this Thursday!
Out of THIS mess you did manage to predict one thing correctly… Dwyer… DID get less carries… now, if you only left out all that other mess you might have gained genius status…

Good lord, we lose one game and suddenly it’s the end of the world and Paul Johnson is a failure and all the redneck Georgia fans have come out of the woodwork talking trash again. Actually, that last one isn’t new – Georgia fans never stop talking trash, even after being beaten on their home turf.
Yes, this team has problems. The O-line couldn’t block for crap last night and the defense forgot how to tackle. (Don’t even get me started on special teams.) Paul Johnson is going to light a fire under their collective asses starting today. I can see him taking drastic measures if we show up next week like we did last night.
One more thing: I hope this knocks us clear out of the rankings (and given how little credit the voters like to give Tech, it probably will). Last season proved that this team works best after being hit with a hard dose of reality – we did, after all, smack Miami right after losing to UNC.

Jacket fans, ignore all of this banter from UGA fans ticked about their 1-2 record they have coming up after their trip to Fayetteville on Sat and from Miami fans who are stuck in their Big East glory days

I am amazed at all the armchair coaches. Some of you people act like CPJ never lost a game and some of you UGA people act like you haven’t (memo to UGA: 1980 is now 29 years ago).
To listen to some of you, teams would need to change their offenses every game, lest someone figure out what they’re doing by watching film. That cracks me up. If a pro set team has a miserable game, do people start screaming for them to go to some other offense?
CPJ has been pretty successful with the triple option everywhere he’s taken it. It’s really more about execution than the offense itself.
The real worry on this team is the defense. No pass rush and receivers open all over the field. Not just last night, but last week as well. Even if the offense is clicking, it’s going to take 30+ points each game to garner wins.

Mark, I think it might be time for you to re-calculate your trajectory opinions of the Dogs and Bees. It looks to be the exact opposite of what you prognosticated two short weeks ago.
For an unstoppable option offense, Tech sure does look out of options. CPJ should get an endorsement deal with Maalox or the Dick Cheyney School of Public Speaking. Also, has anyone else noticed the size of CPJ’s gib? Now that’s a turkey neck.

The fact that teams have “figured out” Tech’s offense only means that the offense *can* be beaten as easily as a more traditional offense. Now, their games will come down to talent and execution just like any other team. In other words, the triple option will not really help them or hurt them in comparison to another offense; it will just be what they happen to use.

Folks, Clemson is the best team we will play this season, and they are right next to Va. Tech in terms of talent. I finished watching the game from tivo last night and NFL scouts from 20 teams were in attendance at that game. Clemson’s O line, at its lightest, outweighed the largest Tech lineman by 25 pounds, and at worst, by 65. One of their Def-ends was the #1 rated player out of high school 2 years ago. Then with Spiller and Ford, you had a team of race horses, and Parker threw lights out. That was one of the best teams that the ACC has in place.
That said, Miami has some playmakers too, but not the number that Clemson did. Harris has a great go-to guy in Travis Benjamin, who had 128 yards against FSU. Harris is a good passer, but he never ran against FSU, I don’t look to see him do anything differently. Miami had 90 yards on the ground and 386 in the air. Same attack as what we saw with Clemson, with younger players. I think our D is better than to allow two 30 point games. I see Tech winning by 7 on the road.
Out of all this brainstorming i’m not sure what i find the most comical… maybe that idea that you personally counted 20 NFL scouts in attendence at a college football game? or that CLEMSON will be the best team GT faces all season… lol… this is rich in brilliance…

The loss had little to do with the scheme. They didn’t execute well.
They played horribly on defense. Thier talent wasn’t equal with the talent Miami put on the field. Miami beat the breaks off Tech equal to the licking Tech delivered to them last year.
This is not an inditement of the option. They got outplayed. Miami had more emotion, fire, drive and energy. Tech had better find those and some stamina with a relatively thin team and they had better find them soon.

The Defensive Scheme was a big issue. The soft zone looked like swiss cheese. I’m not sure any receiver was covered effectively all night, and they never got pressure. The miami OL was a big orange wall.

This idea of “figuring out the offense” is ridiculous. Is it possible to figure out Tech’s offense but not figure out UGA’s offense? Or Miami’s? No matter what system you run, it takes players executing for it to work. Tech was dominated on the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball. That is what happened, pure and simple. That shouldn’t be any comfort to Tech fans, because actually executing a game plan is much harder than coming up with one. But it shouldn’t be any comfort to Tech’s opponents either, because beating Tech or any other opponent isn’t about “figuring out their system”, but out performing them.

Tech is in big trouble this year. That’s one of the worst performances I’ve seen both offensively and defensively in a long time. Nesbit is toally worthless and that’s not a good thing when your defense is one of the worst in the conference. I see Tech around 7 and 5 this year. I see bad things in the future for this program. Last 4 games….
LSU-38-3-Got totally dominated
J’vill State-20 point win that was very ugly and J’vill St was missing their best player. If the QB played that game it could have been much closer.
Clemson-Completely checked out at halftime and the refs bailed them out at the end. Should have lost this one.
Miami- Just like the LSU game, got totally embarrassed. Score could have been 45-17.
This program just took a huge step backwards. Just when the Techies thought they had something to build on, they realize they are right back to the old tech and the 7 and 5 records.

Tech’s loss last night proves what happens when a team is so one dimensional. The main problem I’m seeing with this offense is that the O-Line needs to hold their blocks a little longer against the D-Line before the go to the second level. Because what has happened the last 2 games, especially in the second half; is that the D-Line is able to get into the backfield faster and slow down the play because the lineman aren’t holding their blocks. Johnson’s going to have to reevaluate some of his blocking scheme’s.

I’m not going to rip on GT, because it’s a good university and a legit coach is at the helm. People do eventually figure out the option, though.
But a bit of comeuppance for the clowns who troll these blogs, waiting for the first chance to post a score of a win (the first in eight years). And now, ‘bowl games from last year don’t have any relevance.’ Umm, wha? Can’t have it both ways, Jacket fans. You can’t gloat about a win in November of last year and pretend a game from the start of the year doesn’t count in the same breath.
Protip: don’t go bleating about a single game in nearly a decade every chance you get, and you won’t get the same in return when you get embarassed. Much respect for the university, but the fans have something to be desired.

Georgia fans (and I’m one of em) shouldn’t celebrate Tech’s loss with too much gusto. With Randy Shannon hanging around the U, Miami will remain average. We need this season to spin out of control for the U so Randy gets fired and they bring in a competent coach (maybe Tubs). Either way, Florida is taking the pick of the litter as FSU and Miami are both average to dull. Georgia will be better off if these two programs are resurrected and take a share of the sunshine state talent from Jean Short U.
You are the epitome of ” you can’t fix stupid !”. Meyer is “taking the pick of the litter” ? where ? In South Florida ? Concentrate on GA’s own woes.
“we need this season to spin out of control”. Do you even grasp how pathetic that sounds ? Hoping that Miami loses so you can get recruits? Have you ever even darkened the door of a HS far less an accredited college or university ? Your parents should sue your school district for producing such an inferior product.
Let’s see, Mark Richt is a ‘Cane, Willie Martinez? (Check!), and you are about the only tool in the peanut state that blithely declares ” With Randy Shannon hanging around the U, Miami will remain average..”. Hey Giblet Head…follow rebuilding much ?
Tommy Tubberville (Cane!) does’nt sit around hoping that Miami loses so that he gets offered it’s HC job when one of his protege’s is now the HC and leans on both him and Jimmy Johnson from time to time.
May I congratulate you on a level of stupidity seldom seen in one’s lifetime. Many of us had heard that there were levels of idiocy seldom witnessed by the eyes of modern man…but now you have made believers out of us who thought it nothing more than myth.

Would have posted earlier, been too busy choking down 33 servings of humble pie.
Damn…we got BLASTED !!
First, with both CU & Miami, I think our O-Line was up against superior DE & DT talent. Both games GT O-Line was getting blasted off the line (esp last night)so much that I think the O-Line started giving up on blocking in early 3rd Qtr.
Second, give it to Miami O-Line.
Harris had all night to throw.
Boy do we miss our 3 D-Line guys from 2008.
Third, secondary coverage was the unbelievably bad.
Not sure what coverage scheme Wommack was running.
Also didnt see any adjustments in Pass D.
Unbelievable how open so many Miami WRs were.
Third, QB Coach Bohannon needs to work better with Josh.
It just looks “deer-in-the-headlights” when he’s passing.
D-Lineman Robert Hall on cructches is VERY bad news.
REALLY REALLY glad Roddy Jones didnt break his neck on the face plant.
Jeeezz that looked dangerously bad.
Fatigue or not, when TV showed DE Morgan on the bench at start of 2nd Qtr looking totally gassed, I started worrying…for good reason.
I think I’ll give FSU a little more slack on the JaxSt game. Might be a better BYU-FSU game than I was guessing.
As CPJ has said before…”Physical superiority trumps theory.”
I dont believe its a bad offense, just not all the right/optimal players in place.
UNC game looms VERY LARGE here.

Mark (and same goes for Jeff Schultz) I enjoy reading your blogs/articles. It’s too bad it never leads to an actual discussion about the subject. Just a bunch of jerks who act like elementary school kids yelling at each other. And it’s both sides of the fence. Of course it seems like there are 10 woofin dawgs for every RAMBLE ON, St. Simons and m.
What a bunch of tools.
And by the way, it’s one loss. Anyone looking realistically at the schedule figured this was going to be a tough game. The true measure of this team and Paul Johnson will be how they respond next week against UNC at home. I still predict Tech will be 8-3 and UGA 7-4 come the last weekend in November.

Also now we know why Terrance Moore quit. He would get so much hate if he had to actually interact like this with his readers that can see through his BS. But that’s a good thing we don’t have to read his racist and idiotic ramblings anymore.

And who scheduled 3 games in such a short time? That’s who PJ should be calling stupid.

Why all the Nesbitt hate? The running game has no chance when the defense is playing in Tech’s backfield. And, I thought he looked good last night passing. But the degree of difficulty on the passes is going to hinder the passing game. Short passes over the middle are clearly the way to keep defenses honest and help give the RB’s room to make plays. Where’s the Run and Shoot? Another thing that would help is not letting LB’s and DB’s come flying into the backfield untouched. How many missed blocks have there been this year? The answer is alot. Which leads me to believe the players have given up on CPJ. How many times did an A-back not bump a defender or go for the cut block and not even get a hand on the defender. There’s only a couple explanations for that. Either the defenders are all Barry Sanders and can juke and jive amazingly well, the players did not receive proper coaching, or the players are not giving their all. I think the players do not trust the coach and the coaches have not done a good enough job to motivate the players. Something is wrong this year, because even last year, when the team clearly didn’t know what it was doing, they were busting their tails. This year, they look like they don’t care. Maybe the ego was inflated and they needed to lose before getting focused, but something has gotta change. I don’t know what, but I think short/medium passes over the middle would be a good start, especially when the defense is leaving it wide open.

Re above comments…Tubberville will be coaching Virginia next year. Mark it down.
