5 reasons Georgia Tech will win at Miami

The ESPN-fueled zaniness will be on the other side this time. But that's OK. (AJC photo by Johnny Crawford)

The nighttime zaniness will be on the other side. But that's OK. (AJC photo by Johnny Crawford)

1. Paul Johnson coaches Georgia Tech. Randy Shannon coaches Miami. Mismatch.

2. Tech just got a crash course in how to handle a Thursday night game. The home team will be pumped and will start fast. The visitor must ride out the first quarter and stay close, which is doubly important if …

3. You’re a running team, which Tech is. The Jackets can’t get too far behind. But they won’t. Indeed, their capacity to control the ball and the clock will help douse Miami’s early fire. Which means …

4. It will come down to execution. That’s a mismatch, too. Miami beat Florida State because FSU is even sloppier than the U. Tech can get sloppy, but not when it matters. And, in case you haven’t noticed …

5. Tech owns Miami. Even Chan Gailey beat the Hurricanes. As Inspector Clouseau would say, “The case, she is sol-ved.”

(Or is it? Coming next: What ESPN.com’s Scouts Inc. thinks of this titanic Thursday tilt.)

I like our chances. Here’s hoping Nesbitt doesn’t have to throw a pass because the U defends the option as poorly as they did last year.

Tech has all guns firing in this one. CPJ had a weak J. St. & a strong Clemson to fine tune team for this game. Tech runs the score up like they should have the past two weeks. GO JACKETS. THWG.

First! On topic, I have decided nothing is predictable this year, even more so than most years. The last remaining shred of predictability went out the window when the Falcon’s defense decided to look like the Steelers last sunday after looking like they were a taco short of a combo plate all preseason. Lets play the game!

Coach Paul Johnson is a very good game manager, and the team has played well this season keeping it very simple so far. Expect more wrinkles to be added this week. Our interior defensive linemen have been playing very well and holding their own in the middle of the defense. Nobody has been able to run effectively between the tackles. Look for the Canes to attack the interior defense by running the ball in the 1st quarter.

Even Chan Gailey beat the Hurricanes. And Miami’s program has never been the same since.

Last year the U had a ton of freshmen in their two deep rotation. This year they are bigger and faster, especially on defense. They have new offensive and defensive coordinators. The jury is out on Lovett’s D, but they mostly did what they wanted to do against FSU. Which was to shut down FSU’s running game. And force FSU to either win or lose in the air.

Their new offensive coordinator, Mark Whipple, is very good. Not only that, he has complete control over the offense. Randy Shannon does not get involved in the offensive play calling. Which means the GT defense is going to get stretched by a offense that is much less conservative than the teams you have seen the last 4 years. This is not the U that you’re used to seeing.

If the weather is good, I think it comes down to GTs defense. If they can stop Jacory Harris, they’ll win. If it comes down to a shootout, they lose. If the weather is bad then the U will have a much tougher time of it, GT will have to play poorly to lose.

I’m from FL and have been a Canes fan since long before Jim Kelly. I also like the Jackets so I kind of hate to see either lose. Good luck to both and may the best team win. College football is the best football.

Tech can barely beat a very poor Clemson team at home what are they going to do on the road against a decent team?

The gimmick is almost over. Remember the run and shoot? It and Glanville had some success for a little while. Keyword being little while.

Well Shane,
I hate to admit it but the gimmick will be trampling our defense at least until we can find some people with the talent to run our stale offense.

Shane you must be a teenager because only someone with that type of limited experience would say CPJ’s O doesn’t work. The man has been successful running offenses for 20 years – 2 national championships, turned around Navy, first successful year at GT, 2-0 now – yeah he doesn’t know what he is doing – just a gimmick.

I guess Ga’s ability to accept non-qualifiers is a gimmick too.

Shane,…no gimmick,..just an off night against a very good Clemson team. The Tigers are better than OK State and South Carolina. Back to the off night,….we still put up over 300 yards on the ground. When’s the last time,…well never mind,..it’s a waste of time with your kind.

Thanks Bama Jack. I like your coach and unlike most, I blame the billionaires for pulling college coaches Spurrier, Petrino and Saban out of their element. When someone offers you two to three times what you are making, though you know accepting is a mistake, it is difficult not to. Petrino was promised Vick at QB and a competent GM but the Falcons delivered neither. Spurrier, Saban and Petrino all wanted out of contracts early of what the billionaires tricked them into. Blank deserves some or most of the blame for the Petrino mess.

Shame,….no gimmicks, just an off night against a very strong Clemson squad,..a team that’s certainly better than OK State and South Carolina. But,…it was an off night that saw us put up over 300 YARDS on the ground while gutting out a tough 4th quarter comeback to seal the victory. Think about this before you put up such a stupid comment.

A real coach, Paul Johnson…stomped a mudhole in Miami last year. And will do it again this year.

Thank God and Greyhound that chan gomer gailey is gone forever.

Just like to get em riled up. That being said I do consider Tech’s offense to be a one hit wonder. QB gets killed in that offense (kind of like run and shoot) and NO passing game whatsoever so if you fall behind its game over.

Clemson adjusted at Halftime with its DE and took away the pitch man. After that Tech did nothing. Other teams will do the same.

6. Josh Nesbit miraculously obtains the ability to throw downfield and finally presents the “triple” part of the triple-threat that has long been claimed, yet to date still unseen, in his game.

Ahhh..so Clemson adjusted at the half, took away the pitch man and Tech did nothing…..well, nothing but vary the rotation (which can be done 50 different way) and march down the field thier last two possesions to get the victory. I guess while Clemson adjusted at half which accounted for the third quarter they didn’t do so for the fourth. Right Shane?

Shane you wouldn’t know the difference between an option offense, a pro style offense and a wing-t if they all crawled up your happy azz

Tech will probably win against Miami because Shannon can’t coach his way out of a paper bag. Unfortunately for Tech fans they will watch the Jackets lose next weekend to the Tar Heels. Don’t kid yourself Tech fans, that offense is losing its luster. Other teams are figuring it out, just look at what Clemson did in the second half.

It did look like Clemson had a good plan by having their DE’s contain Nesbitt and getting between him and the pitch man, and at the same time, jamming the middle with their DT’s and MLB to stop the dive play. But CPJ has seen this before and should make the necessary adjustments. Of course, it would help if the passing game would improve.
Everybody has been talking about how talented and deep our secondary is — well, this may be their chance to prove it.
Turnovers will determine the outcome of this game.

I am pretty nervous about this game. All that talk about Tech and Nesbitt developing a workable passing game preseason appeared last week to be just talk – he had know touch and little decision-making prowess in passing at all – and coach’s play-calling did not help him develop any confidence either (where were the short easy throws early?)

A good defensive line (like LSU or Clemsons) can limit this offense and GT needs to be able to pass over it to win the big games imho.

Heals 4 Real: If GT’s offense has lost its luster then what’s the deal w/ Butch’s offense? Looks like UCONN has provided everyone with a blueprint. Clemson couldn’t stop GT in the 4th quarter when the game was on the line. 2 drives to tie and then win the game.

I doubt Tech is very worried about the T-Heels who scored 12 points against UConn.

The Heels better worry about their LAST game of the regular season in Raleigh and see if they are bowl eligible.

Not Disappointed!

Morning all!. Including Shane. You guys play nice and don’t pick on the little one!\

Paul Johnson has a playbook from “Hell!” He can adjust as well. He stated that Nesbitt will have a better game the week, last nite on the calling show with Wes Du”790thezone!” I do believe Nesbitt will have a better game.

The Jackets should win, but it will be a close one!
