In a fight to the finish, Georgia shows it can punch back

Athens — We learned something about these Bulldogs on Saturday night. We learned that they might not be as gifted or as polished as vintage Georgia teams, but we learned that they still have Bulldog-sized hearts.

Yes, they played better — at least on offense and on special teams — than they had in Stillwater, but the revelation was that they played infinitely harder. They could never quite shake South Carolina, but if not for their resolve they wouldn’t have exited with a careening victory. They’d have left 0-2.

And an 0-2 Georgia team would have touched off a hue and cry unlike any raised since Mark Richt came north from Tallahassee. We know from the week just past that even one loss is enough to set off Bulldog Nation. (”Bench Joe Cox!” “Fire Mike Bobo!” “Hire Jon Gruden!”) A second loss so soon into the 2009 season would brought the even bigger heat. And there were long and scary moments when a second loss seemed a distinct possibility.

They trailed 17-7 early, and if not for a Brandon Boykin kickoff return it would have been worse. Then they squandered 14 points off a 15-point lead by snapping the ball out of the end zone and by throwing the ball to the outrageously talented Acworthian Eric Norwood, who plays for South Carolina, and inside the final minute there was no assurance 0-1 wouldn’t become 0-2.

It was 41-37 with 6:13 left when Carolina took the ball, and within every Bulldog fan’s mind danced something other than sugarplums. Georgia would have to bank on its defense to halt somebody with the game on the line, and we all know what Georgia fans think of their defense and its coordinator. But this time the men of Willie Martinez made their stand.

Inside the Georgia 10-yard-line, inside the final 30 seconds, Carolina throwing for the end zone, and the men of Martinez held up their end. Stephen Garcia’s final two passes fell incomplete, neither of them great throws, but neither were directed toward a receiver left unencumbered. The indomitable Rennie Curran foiled the last throw, and  in the end nothing much mattered except the rather astonishing score:

Georgia 41, South Carolina 37.

Characterize UGA's victory.

Joe Cox, the quarterback deemed insufficient to requirements by some among his constituency, had a nice enough game except for one regrettable interception. He kept Georgia moving after it fell behind early, and when it was 38-23 Cox seemed to have put the Gamecocks away. But then a bad snap became a safety, and then there came a field goal, and then Norwood’s interception return for a touchdown, and suddenly it was tied.

Except it wasn’t. DeAngelo Tyson, a sophomore defensive end from Statesboro, blocked the automatic PAT, and Georgia still held the skinniest of leads. That’s the kind of play a defensive end doesn’t figure to make, a quick turnaround after the opposing D has just scored, but Tyson threw up his hand and kept the Bulldogs in front by being, not to put too fine a point on it, a bulldog.

And that’s what Georgia fans could and should take from this one. This isn’t a great team by any measure, but it was never going to be. What was troubling about falling to 0-1 was how readily the Bulldogs succumbed to Oklahoma State (which just lost to Houston — yikes). What we needed to see this night wasn’t if Georgia was the nation’s most gifted assemblage — it isn’t — but if it still can play the full-tilt brand of football that made this program famous.

It took a while, both literally and figuratively in a game that lasted four hours, but we have our answer. There’s still fight in these Dawgs. These 1-1 Dawgs.

Last night’s game made me want to puke. Between our ridiculously inconsistent play on both sides of the ball and the massive quantity of alchohol needed to prevent my having a brain aneurism watching it, I’m certainly not feeling very chipper this morning. In fact, I’m almost embarrassed to call this a victory. Had the Zebra’s calls not gone our way for the most part (for example, let’s remember Carolina had two TDs nullified), we could have gone down. They almost pulled it out in the end anyway – thanks to our phenominal ability to let other teams march against us at will.

I could line Helen Keller up against Martinez’s defense and score. Wait a minute; You say she’s blind and dead? …Doesn’t matter, she’ll score anyway. How can that man even take a paycheck?

So where do we stand? I give kudos to our offensive line and Blair Walsh. Samuels also ran like a Georgia back is expected. Charles and Green are looking good and King is coming on. I still hope Brown and Wooten get some opportunities this year. Cox’s play was probably on par with what Helen Keller would have done. Just kidding, I like Joe; but he’s yet to show me he’s our answer under center. Fortunately for us we don’t have to worry about playing a freshman quarterback like USC and Michigan are doing. I won’t even try to guess how many sophmore’s are starting. Yep, let’s play it safe and stick with a fifth year senior.

There were far too many negatives in last night’s game to cite, so I want even try. Like CMR said “We got our first win.” Unlike him, I won’t be able to sit back and enjoy it. Oklahoma State got pasted by Houston in Stillwater yesterday, and we we give up 37 points between the Hedges to a team that managed to score 7 against NC State the week before. After two games under our belt, we still appear to be just a poorly coached team with a ton of talent. Like I said, it makes me want to puke.

It still amazes me how many coaches we have on this blog who know exactly what the UGA program needs. Looking at the big picture here is what I see.
1. We won even though we had three turnovers and a high snap that led to 23 South Carolina points.
2. Joe Cox played good enough for us to win and looked much improved over last week. That’s what you want.
3. Richard Samuel looked really good, much improved.
4. The offensive line looked better against a better defense.
5. Special teams play was better.
6. Branden Smith and Orson Charles looked good.
7. Still have no defensive ends that can get to the quarterback. Maybe Houston will help.
8. Coverage was too soft and we never adjusted.
9. Run defense is pretty good.
10. We won… everyone predicted we’d score 10 points.. just goes to show that college football is harder to predict than you think. It is way to early to give up on this season. All you fair weather Dawgs should get off the band wagon. You don’t have a winning attitude.

Some of you dawg fans don’t know S@*+ about football! To the idiot who said, “next year we will win it all”. You have a def. cord. who doesn’t make adjustments during a game while other def cord. study the game in progress. Willie just sticks with his game plan. Willie plays prevent defense to start the game! RICHT KNOWS THIS! But he isn’t MAN enough to do anything about it. Willie is costing him his football LEGACY. Period! Even the announcer kept talking about Willie over and over again. Willie is not a good def. coodinator. He plays it to safe. He is so worried about giving up the big play he lets the other team march up and down the field like a BAND! To see such great players just stand back and wait is somthing guys who can’t cover should be doing. Ga players CAN cover! It’s just a damn shame! And no ones fault but Richts!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (For not manning up) It’s just a waste of time watching such crap, I give up! Would someone please give Richt a presp. for testosterone, so he can grow a pair!

How much of Willie Martinez do we have to take? We recruit in the top five every year and our defense SUCKS! The backers drop too deep, so SC passes under them all night. What, one sack and no hurries?

37 points to SC??? I hate to see Florida and the rest!

I’m glad the dawgs won. Getting that 1st win under the belt feels good no matter how ugly it was last night.

But neither our Defense nor our QB are going to take us successfully through the SEC grind. You are a complete blind homer if you think Cox and Martinez have “got it”.

BugKiller, give it a rest man. I get what you’re saying, and agree, but your rants are falling on deaf ears to this crowd. The best way to get your point across is to stop donating money and stop attending the games. Money drives this train, not AJC BLOGGERS.

It may be a win, but not one to be particularly proud of I don’t think. The plays of Smith and Boykin were exciting to watch. But we should be thankful that USC wasn’t any better than they are or we would have been dead meat! Everyone knows whenever you have 3 fumbles and 1 interception for a total of 4 turnovers, have 13 penalities, and run 30 plays fewer than your opponent that you can usually count on a loss.

If USC had caught a couple of balls that they should have and we didn’t have the long touchdown run (which is very exciting but rare and can’t be counted on every time) we’d have lost for sure. No pass rush still. And I thought the penalty problem had being resolved. Well, anyway, I’ll be watching for more of Boykin and Smith in the future. We’ll enjoy this ugly win because we may not get any more like this one!

This team is looking alot like a Bobby Bowden coached team. The defense on the final drive was horrible and they were lucky to survive. Martinez didn’t put any pressure on South Carolina. They allowed them to go down the field at will not only during the final drive but the entire game. Coach Richt needs to make a change at Defensive Cordinator and quick. Trust me when I tell you that this defense is going to give up at least 30 points the rest of the season. Mike Bobo is not a SEC coordinator so he won’t be able to outscore anybody. Although its a win, I feel like we lost. Too much talent to be so mediocore. If all else fails my three choices for head coach are: Kevin Summerlin from Houston, former Oklahoma assistant (he beat Oklahoma State), Chip Kelly from Cincinnati (a rising star in the coaching ranks) or Kirby Smart, defensive coordinator from Alabama (Georgia grad and by the way, he coaching under Saban, he knows defense). Go Dawgs.

Who was that guy running the ball last night? Exact opposite of how he ran last week. Last week, one hand on him and he was down. Last night he was one tough SOB. I can’t knock the D too much b/c they were put in very tough situations by the turnovers and did a pretty good job considering how long they were on the field. I am not a fan of Joe Cox and agree that we should do what Southern Cal is doing and start a young guy that can grow with the other young guys around him. As much as I love Richt, he seems to let emotion get in front of production. He’d never fire Martinez or bench Cox, so we just need to accept it and ride the roller coaster of a season. Next year should be the start of something big.

I know the Georgia defense is going to get heavily criticized, and in part, it’s probably all warranted. But I think there were a few factors that made our defense look worse than it was.

SC threw out the playbook for this game and basically just had Garcia throw every play. No one could have anticipated that game plan.

We turned it over inside of our own 30-yard line twice. That puts such a strain on our defense.

Finally, because of our big plays on special teams, the time of possession was heavily in favor of SC. That puts an additional strain on our defense.

That said, we have a glaring weakness on pass coverage though. I won’t even mention the soft zone over the middle. What really concerns me is how many deep balls I saw where our cornerbacks didn’t even turn to face the ball. They just opted to face guard and hope for the best.

Saw the UGA DB’s “Face Guarding” (not looking back for the ball) and wondered why it was never called…well found out that it’s not illegal under NCAA rules…the only time it would be called would be if they had touched the receiver when doing so…pretty good coaching on the DC’s part…below is a write up from someone responding to this question…I was wondering why it wasn’t called.

“Under the NCAA Rule 7-3-8 c there must be contact beyond the line of scrimmage on a legal forward pass play for pass interference to occur. Face guarding without contact is not a foul under NCAA rules..
Officials will key on the defensive player who is not playing the ball. When that player who is not playing the ball makes contact, then DPI may have occured. It has been my experience that commentators rarely know all the rules or are often confussed by the rules or their applications. I would put little faith in the guys commentating on the game and keep your faith in the guys on the field officiating the game.
Face guarding alone is not DPI.”

I’m sure that many of you already knew this, however for the rest of my uninformed fellow posters, I thought it was worth mentioning.

By the way you mispelled a F word yourself genius! These Coaches get paid MILLIONS of dollars to perform! How much do you make! I don’t mind rooting for a team that is well coached yet untalented. But when you have great players and a dumb ass DEF cord. That is dumb. But you’re too DUMB to realize that aren’t you ‘oh great one’! Why arn’t you on the sidelines with CMR making millions. I’m sure UGA would go undefeated every year with your brillance and expertise. I’m sure you’re going to read my comments, like you do everyone else who disagrees with you, and determine my occupation, educational level, age, and even my favorite color! I am a UGA graduate (Class of ‘81) by the way. But, UGA football does not consume my everyday life. I’m sure you sat in your room all week pouting about UGA’s loss last week, so this week should be better. UGA barely beats SC and I’m sure you’ll be talking smack all week. A very compelling game, indeed…so many whacky unordinary plays and it came down to the very last one. UGA lucked out a bit as if Garcia would have thrown to the back in the left flat, it would have been at TD (or at least a frist and goal at the 2). Good thing for the pups that didn’t happen cause they wouldn’t have been able to overcome 0-2. However, Arky will be a very tough game and if the pups lose that one, 1-2 can quickly become 3-3 or worse…

Special Teams and a poor last play by SC were the two biggest reasons GA won last night. I see GA a .500 team at best. You can’t constantly depend on these factors for victory.

Have any of you thought that maybe the coaches believe Logan Gray will not be the QB of this team next season. Think about it: Cox has a serious shoulder issue (since Spring). Yet Logan can’t get on the field. Maybe he is not the QB everyone believes him to be. If he was the legit heir, then why is he on the field during punt returns. Mark this down – Next season, Aaron Murray will start at QB for UGA.

The people who are complaining about the DEFNENSE are COMPLETE IDIOTS!

The defense was on the field for almost the whole first quarter and 89 FREAKIN PLAYS all together….THAT IS 2 GAMES WORTH!

Are you missing the fact that the defense stiffened and forced 5 field goal attempts?

The defense did what it had to to win…don’t forget that S.Car only had a Pick 6 (6 points there)

a overhead punt for a safety (2 points)

and recoverd a fumble at the 23 yard line and at the 7 yard line…that means they only had to go 30 yards on offense to get 22 of their 37 points!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Justin Houston will be back next week to help that pass ruch as will Brandon Wood…..That will help a TON

My biggest problem was getting away from Samuel and the RUN for too long and not getting M.Brown in the game

This team is LOADED with RAW electrifying YOUNG TALENT (Green, Samuel, B.Smith, Orson Charles, Boykin, M. Brown and many more)

As they develop, this will be one of the fastest most talented Georgia teams ever!

In November of 1980, the greatest generation of bulldogs, had to have a fumble by George Rodgers in the last of the game for us to secure a win. SC won the stats game that day, We won the game. We should be glad that we won yesterday/last night.

What did we do good, won! WonWON!

What did we do bad, sepcial teams, defensive calls, dropped the ball, stupid penalties, some poor decsions at quarterback?

You can’t change a win, but you can sure work on the other. Nothing else matters at the end of the game.

Two games in, GA still has poor coaching but now Martinez shows he is what we thought. Now to add Bobo and Fabris.

1-Bobo did a little better job but STILL no motion with AJ, no two back sets, he singlehandedly killed the one drive we needed by putting in the 2nd string QB and calling a horrible play. He is a good coach but not an elite SEC coach.

2-Fabris is terrible. Could you not see our punt return team all turn and run back and not even watch the punter. They saw that in the OK State game and took advantage. Better kickoff team FINALLY! Why couldn’t we have done that the last two years??

3-Martinez is the same mediocre coach, not an elite coach. Could we not put ONE LB up at the LOS on the TE and check him off the line of scrimmage? Or do we just let them run the same play over 30 times. That was painful to watch. One turnover and no pass rush. And we continually hear it blamed on “we don’t have the personnel”. Butler you were a great kicker, but that is BS. It’s their job to find and train the personnel. Do we have the personnel of NC State who held them to 10 points?

Thank goodness for AJ, Smith, Charles and Boykin and a defensive stand.

Coach Smith, and the Lone Trumpeter, wow you guys are so damn right on. The defense gives up an average of 30 or 40 points a game under Willie and we have such a GREAT defense. The announcer who maybe is as smart as you guys says the Def. Cord. is playing way to soft in the secondary. But what the hell does he know. You guys are the experts! That was SC. Try playing like that against the Gators and well, you already know ‘that’, if your so smart. We have a great defense. Just a bad Def. Cord. Which means we have a poor defense!

You guys propping Willie’s D with the “They didn’t score any TD’s late” are hilarious. I guess watching the sh!tty SC Offense throw for 313 and run for another 114 didn’t bother you. Wait till Tebow humiliates us passing for 350 and runs for another 100 himself. I guess this embarrassment of Defense suits the guys who drink the complacency Kool-Aid with Richt, Willie and crew. There’s going to be some embarrassing losses this year if this trend continues. Richt receives a 7 figure salary and the assistants make nice 6 figure salaries to put out a better product.

Coach Smith et al,

UGA does have team speed that will haunt some others teams as the seasonprogresses. Running game looks solid, passing game good, kicking game ok, decison making on special teams, needs some work, quarterback needs to get a little more of the rust off. If we keep improving week over week, we will do as I have said since March. Surprise everyone, and be a lot better than the prognosticators

Those who are calling the defense poor, let’s look at what they did, over 90 plays, when you count the penalty plays. That is almost two games. The gamecocks had two extra days of rest. UGA mad the goal line stand time and time again. THe redzone defense looked good. You can’t knock it, it held off in the end, and yielded very few scores relative to the times they were in the zone. Give Spurrier 1 minut 32 seconds, inside the 15 and 8 plays, and his team doesn’t scrore. That is some pretty good defense. As far asthe you people criticizing the DB s for “face guarding” that is not a penalty in college uness they make contact. A smaller quick back can play the eyes of the reciever and apparently ours did so pretty well.

I was a walk on at UGA for two years (on defense)

I am a high school football coach

What is your resume?

I didn’t say there wasn’t things the Dawgs need to work on or things I would change

My point is: The total amount of points is misleading because of the situations the Dawgs’ defense was put in (including being in extreme short feild situations)

and they can’t be held responsible at all for 8 of the points

I would certainly do a few things different IF I were coaching the defense….I’m just saying in THIS game the defense did well considering the situation

Seeing UGA needs some a DE that can speed rush on passing downs, how about Orson doing a little 3rd down QB track and destroy…he did it H.S. and boy, he was quick coming around the corner, wouldn’t want him to go every down and take aways from his pass catching…I’m kind of surprised that he’s been as quiet as he has, I’ve seen him pick up the whole team after Murray went down and keep that team beleiving in themselves w/ a sophomore QB at the helm until Murray returned for the playoffs…he is such a team player and if you’d ask him to run thru a wall, then he’d strap em’ on and go full tilt…
BTW, someone in an earlier post mentioned that Stephen Garcia passed instead of running the ball, well that’s the offensive scheme they used at Jefferson H.S. in Tampa and as you could see he was very comfortable/successful running this offense…in addition he’s a good runner and not afraid to mis it up, he’s a big kid…

Guys a win is a win- obviously there are still areas of much needed improvement. Turnovers are hurting us, putting the D out on the field longer, causing them to give up 37 points. The O is getting better and we’re getting some production from our freshman. I do agree that we need to play Gray/Murray a little more to get them some experience once Cox leaves. I’m puzzled how Houston upset OK ST- does this mean the Dawgs were just bad that game or is OK ST overrated? Let the debate begin.

Get off Willie’s back. The defense is MUCH improved thanks to Willie’s tutelage! We only gave up 37 points instead of the 40+ we were giving up at the end of last year! And averageing giving up only 30 points a game is a proven formula for success…in the WAC.
Willie is such a moron. Quit saying the d was tired. They wouldn’t be tired if they could get some decent coaching to stop a drive and get off the field.

Looks like UGA’s defense is still pitiful after giving up 427 yards to a sorry South Carolina offense.

Wow we are very proud that our newest member in UGA lived up to its billing in that Classic match up last night. We are so excited about another divisional match up in the coming weeks. UGA at Vandy should be fabulous! Should be exciting
