I’ve known Peter King for 30 years, or since he was at the Cincinnati Enquirer and I was working in Lexington. There’s not a nicer guy or a harder worker in the biz. But I feel truly sorry for Industrious Pete today. Because he picked the Falcons to go 10-6 and win the NFC South — same as I did! And we know what that means, don’t we?
Pete’s SI.com colleague Don Banks sees it differently. He picks the Saints to win the South and the Falcons to miss the playoffs. And Clark Judge of CBSsports.com likewise picks New Orleans. Of the Birds, he writes: “I’m not sure why, but I don’t see it happening again. Maybe it’s because I trust history, and history tells us that when the Falcons go to the playoffs they fizzle the following season.”
I won’t lie. I was utterly underwhelmed by the Falcons’ preseason. (I was appalled by the defensive non-showing against the Chargers.) But it was only preseason. And there’s enough offense here to provide enough points until the defense comes around. Which it will. I think.
Y’all know my buddy Gregg Doyel of CBSsports.com. He hates everybody. Well, except the Georgia Bulldogs. Even after witnessing their loss in Stillwater, Doyel figures they’ll wind up a Top 15 team. He thinks Richard Samuel will play in the NFL. He thinks Joe Cox will be just fine. He even thinks the defense is OK. (Does Willie Martinez still coach Georgia’s defense?)
Speaking of Georgia’s D … Bruce Feldman of ESPN.com’s Insiders believes Reshad Jones was harshly done, as they say in Britain. Writes Feldman (link requires registration):
“The game featured the worst call of the day when UGA safety Reshad Jones was flagged for unnecessary roughness for drilling Justin Blackmon across the middle just as he was about to catch the ball on a big third-down play. It was a big hit, but Jones didn’t lead with his helmet or hit Blackmon in the head.
“What was Jones supposed to do to the receiver? Clap his hands to startle him? Scream to try to distract him from making the catch? The only way that was ‘unnecessary”is if the pass isn’t anywhere near the receiver.”
One final word about the men of Martinez, this from OSU quarterback Zac Robinson via Dave Curtis of Sporting News Today: “It’s probably the best defense we’ll play all year.”
The Thrashers open camp Saturday — first practice is Sunday — and Mike Zeisberger of the Toronto Sun lists Vegas odds that have them at 50-1 to win the Stanley Cup. Which doesn’t sound all that high, truth to tell. Especially when you consider that six teams are listed at 60-1 or worse.
The Sporting News Hockey Yearbook has the Thrashers the 27th-best team in the 30-team NHL. But, on a happier note, The Hockey Writers offers 10 reasons Ilya Kovalchuk will remain a Thrasher. (Thanks again to faithful reader Wayne Brown of Tuskegee, Ala., for the tip.) The best of the 10: “Little White Russian” — the proposed nickname for a Kovy-Bryan Little-Todd White line.

One of two things will need to happen for the Falcons to go 10-6 this season. 1) Our OL will need to come to play 16 weeks to maintain time of possesion. 2) Find a couple CB’s at least 6′ or taller to cover the tall receivers we face each week. I am hoping for both to happen and we could go a long way in the playoffs.

This new rule to protect “defenseless” receivers is a crock. Get ready for a years worth of bad game changing calls. What used to be considered a great hit (”he got…..JACKED-UP”) is now a 15 yard penalty, based of course on the astute (BWAHHH!) judgement of the refs…geez, talk about a can of worms. Mark my words…this stupid rule is going to determine the outcome of football games (as a matter of fact, it probably already has). Defensive players are supposed to make receivers pay when they come across the middle. And now players/teams are going to be penalized for doing exactly what they’ve been taught to do their entire football lives.
So, let’s see, you can’t lay it on the QB or the “defenseless” receivers…what about the the lineman and running backs? What about the blindside blocks on special teams, or after an interception…we can’t allow that, someone might get hurt.
I’ve got an idea, let’s just chunk the pads, puts skirts on ‘em, and play touch. And after the game they can all get together and sing Kumbaya, and have tea and cookies.

The LSU game does not look quite as daunting as it once did on UGA’s schedule. Of course, LSU could improve after a lackluster showing against Washington. UGA, as we know, can’t possibly improve after a rough start. Sure didn’t after starting out 6-4 in 2006. Sure didn’t after losing 35-14 at UT in 2007. They just aren’t the same program anymore. We need to start throwing dirt on this regime as quickly as possible so that we can get back to the glory days of the 90’s as quickly as possible!

Mark, I like you was not particularly swept off my feet by the Falcons preseason. But then again it was almost exactly what I expected. The Falcons completely gutted their veteran defense from last season and I could almost not get anyone to talk about it. They just kept wanting to talk about Ryan and Gonzalez. And it’s not like last year’s defense was anything great!
I would have to say the draft picks don’t exactly blow me away this year. Sidbury looks decent for where we got him. The rest look very average. We don’t have a punt returner any more and not much of a kick return game. I think Thomas Brown could have helped in these areas so I’m disappointed that we chopped him – Snelling puts me to sleep. My prediction this year 7-9 with a very tough schedule and no defense against the good teams.

I agree the offense will score points this season. But I’m afraid the defense has more leaks than a tea strainer. Blame the secondary but the defensive line is giving the opposition too much time to throw the ball. I don’t care if you have 4 Deion Sanders clones as DBs if you give the QB enough time a WR will get open. We’ve seen a few offensive coordinators get fired in the past week just before the opening game of the season. We may see a few defensive coordinators get the ax after the first couple of games for the same reason. I hope VanGorder isn’t one of them. It looks like Dimitroff is going to be busy for a while taking a look around to try and find some talent. I still think the Falcons can take the NFC South though. Tampa isn’t going anywhere this season. Carolina is about where they were last year. The Saints? That team is who we have to beat twice this season instead of once. 10-6? It’s a tough call but I’ll buy in.

There were two calls that set UGA faith last Sat and they were 1. The non spot challenge that UGA coach did not challenge. The defence clearly stop them on fourth down. 2. the foul for hiting that TE in the third quarter. Both cause UGA 14 points. Cox should have been bench for his poor play. I think that if we lose the next game then its time for a new QB.
Also, Why can’t UGA recruit better athletes at QB. Man since DJ Shockely has left there has not been an athlete at QB. I do not think that da dawgs have the mental make up or talent that Gators or BAMA has. It looks like no championships this year.

That gutted defense will not pay off in the long run because the only young talent on that gutted defense in Lofton. The rest of the young players are garbage except maybe Peria. Also seems like the trend is that the Falcons are putting money in their offense to help make Ryan look good but are not spending any money on the defense.

I think the Falcons scapegoated the defense when Ryan lost the game by playing like a rookie. With Brooking (somehow still a starter) and Choice, I’ll be tempted to pull for the Boys.
Scapegoating players after losing in the playoffs is what the Braves have done and I don’t think it works. Even Milloy got added by the Seahawks today. TD got spoiled by picking 3rd and being lucky the first two passed on Ryan.

Clusters was never so much football players as baseball players. A Clusters would always want to be in the lineup and didn’t miss games with sore parts. We was thinking a lot of people work sore. Sore can be soaked. Sore can be rubbed. Sore don’t mean you miss a game. Now, we’re not picking on anybody in particular, mind you, but they is someone on the Braves that won’t play sore. Sore thumbs, sore groins, sore obliques, sore toes, sore back, sore abdomen, sore ankles, sore hammys, and sore tail from sitting – all that soreness needs to get worked out. If we was making millions of dollars to play ball we could work out of being sore all the time. The Braves have lost five in a row and pretty much look like they are out of it the first week of September. That makes a lot of people sore.

Then, a win over South Carolina.
We’re on a roll now! Joe Cox just needed to work the kinks out, he’s another D.J. Shockley. Oklahoma State IS a really good team, you know. We probably won’t lose again until after Zach Mettenberger’s senior season. Martinez, your D played ONE good game, don’t be getting too comfortable.

They was a sportswriter that got sore all the time and he kept sportswriting. Sometimes at the plant we’ll get sore from lifting and stretching and standing all the time. We have to go back the next day, though. If we was about to win a pennant or make the playoffs we wouldn’t think nothing of being sore. We’d go on in and finish the shift. Maybe we’d do some exercising to get stronger or talk to a pain doctor about how to deal with boo-boo’s. A boo-boo shouldn’t keep you out of the lineup. Something broke should, but nothing is broke that we can tell, just sore. Now, Clusters can sometimes be too hard on somebody that don’t pull on the leotard and go to war. We was criticized for that before but we always held firm to our convictions that a ball player should play ball. It’s kinda hard to watch the season go away and know they had the pitching for a change and couldn’t do the things they needed to win. That group wouldn’t look good in leotards anyway. Bobby and Chino would be especially disgusting in leotards. How did we get talking about leotards, anyway? Well, depending on who’s pitching we may see Chipper back in the lineup pretty soon and then it’s just a short while until hunting season begins and he can do some more sitting in a tree stand.

What, Bradley? You have a column where you aren’t carrying water for Mark Richt? By the way, Mark Richt is going down the path of former Tennessee coach Phil Fulmer. He had a fabulous record after seven seasons which included two SEC titles and a national championship. He became stubborn and too loyal to inferior assistants(sound familiar?)which led to his demise. He also lost ground to programs who hired brighter, more energetic coaches who were on the cutting edge of innovation and organization like Saban and Myere. Lane Kiffin is going to be a burr on Mark Richt’s saddle. You will eat the words you have spoken about Kiffin just as you did about Fulmer earlier in his career.

Well I see the dawgs are at it again. Blame everyone and give credit to no one. OSU was a better team. Their D coach made adjustments. The call was necessary because the hit was unnecessary. The NCAA has mandated the protection of player who are definseless. The defensive back was only trying to unload on the receiver and not make a defensive play. The receiver did not have his hands on the ball. The fourth down was not a bad call the first down was made. If MR had made the challenge he would have lost. College plays are always reviewd in the both and if they are questionable they are reviewed. You lost to a better team. If your offense does not improve you will be playing all night against USC because they have a good defense.

Baseball always was our favorite sport. Sure, we liked to kick the ball and shoot the ball and play some golf, but by far we was always partial to baseball. Baseball is played on the grass and in the dirt both. Baseball involves hitting and catching and throwing and running and sliding and requires some thinking, too, unless you are uncoachable like somebody we know. Baseball is played by players but they are supposed to be a team. The current Braves are playing like players instead of like a team and that may be what’s wrong. Some of them are sore and that’s a problem, too. Sore don’t get it when you’re trying to get to the playoffs. Some people have deep thoughts and some don’t. It probably is true that Chipper’s thoughts aren’t all that well developed and if your brain is sore sometimes you don’t talk as good as you might if it wasn’t sore. Talking like a shetland pony, though, separates you from the rest of the players and makes you a favorite of the sportswriters who probably have a headache when the interview is taking place anyway. Cliches is something a lot of players like and Chipper seems to like ‘em the most of anybody. Mark, or whoever can answer. Is John Parker really a better fit as the 3rd Qb for the Falcons? I am not trying to sound off as a UGA homer, but it would appear to me that Shockley would bring some better experience to the table if needed, rather than JPW. I thought JPW was a pretty good college Qb,but never envisioned him as being good enough for the pro game. That being said, I assume Shockley was not good enough either?

Shockley’s on the practice squad so he’s not entirely gone. You know the odds of Tashard Choice having an impact with the Boys as their 3rd string back were about zero this time last year but he showed he could play. Lots of talented guys may not ever get a shot. Would Favre have gotten one if we hadn’t traded him?

We can try to put this loss on bad calls but for me, that just isn’t true. In my opinion, this loss falls on Richt and Bobo. They went away from what worked the first drive. We had two series were we went three and out and all six plays were pass plays. We drove it eighty yards on the first drive by mixing it up. The horrible play calling and the fact that I think the entire coaching staff is way to soft are my only two issues with them.
I also think that Cox should have been pulled in the second half. He just wasn’t himself. He was probably still weak from having the flu earlier in the week. You can’t recover from something like that in 24-36 hours. Richt should have put Logan Gray in and let him run the offense. God knows he couldn’t do any worse.
I hope they are better prepared come Saturday. I got real worried watching us do so after seeing the Gamecock’s defense on Thursday night. They are the real deal. Let’s hope our boys are ready!

By the way, ESPN had a show on Favre’s career and he stunk for most of his first game before settling down and showing what he could do. Farve and Sou Miss also upset FSU 14-7 the first game of the season which FSU mostly goffed off. I guess Bowden should have been fired for that but somehow he held his job.

You guys need to stay clear away from the MOONSHINE! Are you guys so blinded by hope over reality? I mean where do you guys get your rationale? Do you think a MAGICAL EASTER BUNNY some how left a golden egg in flowery branch?
The offensive line is over-rated big time. Any offense can look good with the likes of Denver, Oakland, Kansas City, Detroit & St Louis – those guys had a pass rush worst than a high school team.
If you can’t look good against those guys, there is really something wrong.
Look what happened against the Cardinals in the playoffs – old NOODLE ARM didn’t know what to do when a somewhat decent pass rush was in his grill the whole game, as he “gift wrapped” those 2 picks and that safety in the endzone was classic.
A thinking and INTELLIGENT qb would have got rid of the ball and not cost the team points – that’s because he couldn’t read the defense and was too stupid to think under pressure. You may like how he speaks at press conferences – but folks the press doesn’t play football.
Then the preseason came alone, and this was a total EMBARRASSMENT on national television! Once again ole NOODLE ARM choked in the redzone, over throwing & under throwing because why? Because he is a NOODLE ARM.
Those cute little quick slants don’t fool anybody in the redzone, that’s why he finished 24 out of 32 in the NFL in the redzone, where he average a HORRIFIC 22 percent.
22 percent – ARE YOU KIDDING ME? Joey Harrington was better than that.
Last season Drew Brees threw for over 5,000 yards and that was with a bad defense. This season they have one of the best defensive coordinators in the NFL and with key additions such as Sharper and rookie Malcolm Jenkins, this is not the same defense.
What that means? Drew Brees will have even more possessions to go to work, and what will make that even more scarier, his number one receiver was hurt all last season, but now he is healthy – the Falcons will be torched twice by the Saints!
Wake up guys, until you fix that defense and get rid of ole NOODLE ARM, it will continue to be………….

Falcons like Foxworth but not enough to guarantee $17 million. If Ravens wanted him, then that confirms he was good. So here are my thoughts on our being “penny wise”:
1) We know that there are only a few shutdown corners in the league (guy in Oakland, Champ Bailey, MeAngelo Hall) but tell me how many good, solid corners are there in the league? I’d say not many.
2) More importantly, how many good corners were on our roster when we made the decision to let Foxworth go?
3) Finally, last time I checked we had cap room and we knew our defense was an issue COMING INTO THE SEASON.
So seems like not only a cheap and shortsighted move for a team supposedly approaching this season with a sense of “Urgency” per TD but also not a very smart one if anyone was counting on Grimes to be an everydown corner and we all knew Houston’s shortcomings.
Well, Mike Smith was supposed to be a defensive minded coach when hired so we’ll see if he can coach ‘em up.

You know, I’ve seen some poor defenses since my first Falcon’s game in 1978. I was at the Dome for the Baltimore game. There were some poor outings, but the poor nature of the outings was not coaching and it was not talent. The poor outings were due to vanilla schemes for preseason and the development of the young players and the cohesion of a very new unit.
The acquisition of two corners is not our of character for TD and MS. They did this last year when they got a good look at the D. They added the proper piece and moved on to the playoffs.
All that to say, why all of the worry? Dude, seriously. People are reacting like the Falcons are the only team with holes here and there. Each year is different in the NFL. What was is not and what is will shake out.
To be frank, this younger and faster unity can’t do much worse than last year, and they will NOT be the last unit in the NFL. All that said, with a more powerful offense and a younger D with so much upside we are going to be fine.
Everyone relax and lets get ready to put a beat down on Miami.

I have the Falcons at 10-6 this season, but have New Orleans at 11-5. I see the NFC Playoff seeded like this.
1.New Orleans
2.Green Bay
3.Dallas
4.Arizona
5.Philly
6.Atlanta
Minnesota, Chicago and the Giants are close but fall short in December.
AFC will be
1.Pittsburgh
2.San Diego
3.New England
4.Houston
5.Ravens
6.Tennessee
Under a new head coach, I see Indy stumbling out the gate, and has too much groud to cover to make the #6 seed. Cinci will be close but no cigar, I see a head coach in Buffalo getting fired by mid-season, and Miami’s Wildcat will be more like a kitty cat this year.

So the #1 pick in the NFL draft wasnt a “athlete”?? Wow…. gotta love how some pple stereotype anyone thats not black as a “non-athlete” I guess Greg Paulus the ex Duke pt guard and now Saraquse starting QB isnt a “athlete” either huh?
Hows those “athletic QB’s” working out there for the Raiders and Titans huh? Jasuckis Russell and Vince Young will do down as 2 of the biggest draft busts ever. Some positions you can get by with just “athletes” (perfect example is the selfish idiot on UGA special teams that caused that touchback) but me… id go with a mix of Brains and Athleticism. Brains cannot be overrated. Say, somebody has a sore brain and doesn’t want to play and somebody else has more brains and they aren’t sore and they do want to play but the one with sore brains is making a lot of money and will always get the start unless he’s too sore somewhere and doesn’t want to play. It happens all the time. We was always wanting to play, sore or not. Sometimes playing sore will make you work out the soreness and sometimes it will make you grumpy and out of sorts. Sorts and sores sounds alike but has nothing to do with each other. When we was playing ball we was always in good sorts and wanting to play, sore or not. What we need to know is how sore is too sore to play? And should sore cause us to miss a game the team really, really needs to win if they are going to advance to the playoffs? Or is sore a pass? No one can be sure (not the same as sore but spelled similarly) and no one can be sore all the time unless they have soreness genes and those genes have gone bad. Say, you wake up sore and don’t want to go to the ballpark. What are you to do? Say you get to the park and see the other team’s ace is pitching and you start to get a little sore around the edges . . .

Actually, the rules about kill shots to receivers would not be necessary if form tackling was demanded by the coaching staffs again! One of the reasons tackling is worse now than 10 years ago and well before that is because of the desire to put a kill shot with your shoulder instead of wrapping the guy up and just tackling him!

1. Lane Kiffin beat a I-AA school to start his career; that’d be akin to coaching your first NFL game against a Kiffin-coached Oakland Raiders team.
2. Mark, I think many folks (maybe you, included) are looking just at stats and scores and coming up with “defense sucks” on the whole. Let me give you MY take on the defense….I think it’s a “slight” secondary upgrade from being dynamic, fast and nasty. Against San Diego, I saw Falcons defenders flying all over the field, into the backfield, wreaking havoc, creating MANY “3rd and long” scenarios for SD. They didn’t CLOSE on those “3rd and longs” but still, they were talented enough to PUT the Chargers in those situations, and not many teams have WRs as all and athletic as they do, nor do many teams have Pro Bwol QBs capable of making those catches. That being said, Drew Brees had to be salivating over tapes of those plays (if they even review preseason shlock).
My point is, they wanted speed and depth on defense, and on the whole, they got it. Less big “names” more quality 2 and 3 deep on the roster. I think, with time, they’ll mesh and be a solid unit during the season. Just my opinion.

The new rule to protect “defenseless” players is going to be controversial all year. It is too subjective and will be inconsistently applied. The NCAA needs to either define EXACTLY what constitutes the penalty (allowing instant replay to challenge the call) or suspend this thing until they work it all out.

Feldman’s take on the Reshad Jones hit was dead-on right: it was a horrible call. The sad thing is, we’ll be seeing that same horrible call — again and again — throughout the entire season. Falcons will be fine. They won’t continue the trend of “win this year, lose the next.” The defense does have to come around, but this is what you get when you have a young defense.
It’s called PROGRESS!
Why, oh why do people keep forgetting that we are in rebuild mode? It was only a year ago that a new GM, new coaching staff, and new team was fielded.
We won’t go 11-5 again (Falcons haters are still trying to get THAT grit out of their teeth), but we won’t go back to loserville.
Sorry for the scant few of you who insist on coming to Falcons blogs, despite hating the Falcons (and more notably, Matt Ryan). Sorry for those who insist on following Mike Vick only. AN OPEN LETTER TO MARK RICHT
Calmed down enough to type coherently. I have been supporter of yours. That ended in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Now believe you are a liability to my beloved Bulldogs. See only downward trend, bitter losses and complete unaccountability. Know why loss in Oklahoma to overrated Cowpatties anguished Bulldog Nation so much? No, I did not think you did! These northern upstarts disrespected the Dawgs. Called them out! Mocked them by saying the point spread would be 300 plus points. Those 24 points seemed like 100! Know what would have happended had the loudmouths treated Alabama, Florida or LSU in such a manner? Their new fancy smancy stadium would have been broken in with a loss of no less than four touchdowns! Any SEC/Southern team with any pride or dignity whatsoever would have left that new stadium with a victory! The Dawgs should have been motivated enough to kick those upstart cowboy wannabes into Texas! The fact they were not exposes your skills as a motivator. The Dawgs did post a face-saving TD then went through the motions for the next three plus quarters. The field goal was an unanticipated plus which meant nothing in the big scheme. You appeared so uninterested that you failed to get your hair ruffled during an obviously biased fourth down mark against the Dawg defense which led to one Cowpatty TD plus a phantom personal foul penalty on Dawgs which led to another. I am hoping that a donation to your favorite charity was not made by that zillionaire in Oklahoma but I have ruled nothing out. It was a sad day for the Bulldog Nation, Southern football and all who believe loudmouth blowhards should get their comeuppance! The Dawg season is officially over. Even if you beat SC by 100 points. You would not if you could! Being a Christian is fine but a lying backstabber has the Crimson Tide in the hunt for a national championship! Will not mean anything in hereafter but fans in Alabama sure feel happier than members of Bulldog Nation in here and now! How deep is pain? Imagine a stranger having intimate relations with daughter/girlfriend/wife or son/boyfriend/husband in a tremendously expensive hotel room then you are required to pay the tab. Vile and nauseating. A bunch of Cowpatties abused the Bulldog Nation without consequence. That is something I will never forget! Nor forgive. Do the right thing. Said as simply and plainly as I could. A completely disillusioned Stendec.

The call against Reshad Jones was a joke, even the announcers said so. Also the announcers said the spot on the 4th down play near the goal line was very generous. Those plays had a big impact on the outcome of the game. That being said, I’m pretty darn worried about the quarterback position now. JC didn t look very accurate and can’t zip the ball in on tight coverage. Play calling was lousy and we have to get a good look at Logan Grey to see what he can do. From my viewpoint, Ok State’s def coordinator out schemed our offensive coordinator during the course of the game.

We were told in 2008 that we would have been far better as a team had we Jeff Owens and the 4 or 5 D Ends that did not then play. Well, they played or were available for play and we lost.
So ……………Richt is not utilizing the so called talent and we are not moving on from more and more dismal losses. OSU will end up being 7-5 or possibly 8-4. They are not really great at all but about as good as KY or Vandy with talent and D talent. We were NOT physical either, excpet for #9s cheap shot …………standard for him. A day late and one dollar short that kid is. He needs to sit. Over rated is #09. Vastly over rated. Terrible on coverages. Awful he is.
UGA was WORN OUT at the half and did not have fire nor did they have a solid and flexible plan of attack. We in 2008 were told that our “special teams did not utilize the best athletes” and that we “feared getting them hurt in 08″ with so many key inuries BUT that WE IN “09 WOULD PLAY them on spec teams”. Well? We stunk except for the 75 yd punt and the nice field goal. We stunk !!
UGA will be 5-7 or maybe 6-6 and you heard it here first. This will be like the 69 team and the 72,73,74 teams and the latter 80s and the Goff led early 90s. We are in major trouble and it has to be resolved soon with major coaching changes, starting with Richt.
I am off the wagon pertaining to him. Enough is enough and UGA grads will make their voices heard soon. In mid October is we are like 2-5, he is in danger of not closing out the season. Bobo and fabris and CWM need to go NOW> Richt can move on. He has had 5-7 years of fabulous recruiting and we are always a day late and a dollar short.
Look at all the new SEC coaches and the fact that they ALL SCORED in the mid to high 40s vs whomever they played ( not OSU but also not great ) and we generate 10 ???? OUr system is over 9 years here at UGA> does it take maybe 15 years to install Bobo’s O???
