PJ was not pleased. PJ was, to borrow a term he used himself, another sort of “p” word. PJ could barely find anything good to say about a 20-point victory over an outmanned team, which isn’t to say he was at a loss for verbiage.
“I want to see some intensity and some fire and some fight,” Paul Johnson said Saturday. “We’re just not nasty enough. We’re too nice.”
That Georgia Tech was never in distress against Jacksonville State didn’t mollify the Jackets’ coach. If anything, it made him ever madder. Jonathan Dwyer scored on the game’s first snap and that, in PJ’s mind, “probably wasn’t the best thing that could have happened.” Because it didn’t give Tech cause to buckle down and execute. It didn’t give it cause to do anything except flail for the final three quarters.
Tech led 17-0 after 15 minutes but outscored the Gamecocks by only three points over the next 45. It managed three touchdowns over that span, one of them a punt return. It lost three fumbles, all three by quarterbacks. Said PJ: “Maybe we should have knocked the crap out of them in fall camp and they’d have hung on to the ball.”
Asked about his team’s passing game: Johnson said: “It was OK — about like everything else.”
His offensive line? “About like everything else.”
About his second-team defense, which yielded a touchdown on the game’s final drive: “If something like that had happened to me, I’m going to be ["p"-word here]. I’m not going to be smiling.”
Did he catch some second-teamers smiling after JSU’s touchdown? “No,” he said, without smiling.” If I did, I would have went and got ‘em. But I didn’t see anybody looking crushed, either.”
Johnson believes these Jackets have the capacity to be really good, perhaps better than good. “I’m trying to raise the level of expectations,” he said. “We could come in here and say, ‘We gained 500 yards [actually 497],’ but we didn’t play the way we needed to play to reach the level I want us to reach.”
On why Tech ran only 11 third-quarter plays: “Because we weren’t worth a crap. We missed every read on the option.”
On his displeasure over a missed PAT: “I don’t think you should be high-fiving each other when you miss a extra point that a junior high school team could make. I don’t think you should have a group discussion and sing, ‘Kumbaya.’ ”
We pause to reflect: Tech wasn’t awful. It was great in the first quarter, mediocre thereafter. Dwyer gained 74 yards on his first carry and only 21 more.
And here we must also note: As teaching tools go, this game falls squarely into PJ’s wheelhouse. He has five days to prepare his men for an old enemy in orange, and those men had already gotten the message. Said Dwyer: “If we came out like this against Clemson [due in Thursday night], we’d get beat.”
The Jackets have had nine months to revel in beating Georgia, nine months to hear how much better they’ll be in Year 2 under PJ. Some teams can handle that. Others require some instruction.
Of his teams at Georgia Southern and Navy, Johnson said: “They liked to win. They fought hard. They played scared. We’re talented, but we don’t have that down-and-dirty part.”
PJ’s men might find some of that these next few days. There will be no “Kumbaya” moments before Clemson comes to town, no group harmonizing. There will be only the sound of one man yelling.
How might practice be Sunday? Said Dwyer, the diplomat: “I don’t think it’ll be any different.”
Said defensive end Derrick Morgan, the realist: “I think it’ll be different.”

Im not impressed with the starting DT, the DE are good though. I see more playing time for TJ Barnes coming. The secondary play was excellent. As far as the offense, it just needs to be more consistent. We definetly have a passing attack that is effective, as long as the revceivers catch the ball. Nesbitt really has improved his passing skills. I also still have no faith in Blair. Should be looking other places for a kicker.

Didn’t see the game but listened to the first three quarters on XM radio. Never heard the DT’s names called for making a tackle. Seems like I heard too many in the secondary stopping the run. The 3rd quarter was ridiculous. Sounded like Tech wanted to head indoors to watch GA vs. OK State, but it sure didn’t sound like they were fired up to put this game away.
Granted, Jax St is not your average cup cake, but after watching Tech’s fame film, Clemson will be chomping at the bit. The D better step it up.

Couldn’t get ESPN360, so only heard the game, and only the first half. But from the recap I noticed all the fumbles and Blair missed a FG and PAT, and it was pretty clear we were playing sloppy and not dominating this team. We should have scored a TD on every possession.
Not surprised by PJ’s comments.

Sorry, Anderson and Peters will not cut it against the big boys. Can Jason Hill help (did not see him until the end of the game)? J. Burnett looked like our best LB. DBs looked disinterested, mainly. I hope we were sandbagging Clemson on offense, otherwise we are in big trouble. How quick can Jaybo return? I prefer to be an optimist, but did not see too much today, other than Dwyer.

Dwyer scores more in one quarter than UGA can score against one of the worst defenses in the country (last year) in an entire game. I really wish we had gotten a 5-star running back.

Sorry, wrong blog…I think we’ll be okay. I think CPJ is doing a good job at getting his team mentally ready for a tough sked. He’s right though, a 20 point win against an FCS team is unsat for a team expecting to win a major conference.
Dwyer running for 74 yards on the first play of the game is a good start.
But, let’s not forget as of Monday, we’ll probably be number 13 in the country and we’re already the number one team in the state!

Jacket Fan, what relavance does Jaybo Shaw returning quickly have with this offense? I dont want that guy touching the ball with a 10 ft pole. Tevin will retain the second string position. Some of the fumbles were not during the option hand off…just not protecting the ball while running.

I thought that we played very sloppily today. Our players seemed to show no interest after that first TD. Hope our players have learnt from the whooping we received from LSU last yr. If we play against Clemson like we played today, we will get embarrassed in our own stadium. I loved to watch Tarrant, Julian Burnett play today…and Bay Bay sure looked stronger and quicker. I see Tech starting off even keel against Clemson and pulling away leading into halftime and continuing to pull away in the second half. Look for CPJ to instill some heart through up and downs and sprints tomorrow and Monday.
When I was in HS we had a game that we won by 30 points and the next practice is the most I’ve ever run. I walked into practice and the coach threw the ball away and said “we won’t be needing this today, you don’t need a ball to learn discipline.” I could tell that day was going to suck.

I believe we can take Clemson IF we can stop their running game. We’ve got to keep them from controlling the ball, eating time, and minimizing our offensive touches. Based on our performance today against the run and recognizing that Clemson’s run game will be much stronger I worry about that.

PJ’s comments are EXACTLY why I love the guy as Tech’s coach..he cuts through the BS!!! He doesn’ try to paint a “rosey” picture after a sloppy game like Gaily did. The ONLY two things I saw today that impressed me, was Dwyer’s opening run for a TD, and Morgan Burnette’s INT. Other than that, Tech was sloppy, uninspired, and accepted mediocrity today–THANKFULLY, PJ doesn’t!!!!
Mediocrity is why CHOKE Gailey is no longer here. I know PJ will be on the players a**es this week in practice, as well he should. I was VERY disappointed in Nesbitt’s 2 fumbles, and he also had two half hearted option pitches. Plus, why in the HAIL did we give up a TD to JSU on their last drive of the game? I hate when we do that.
Bottom line, Tech needs to get their she-ight together before Thursday. I have ALL the confidence PJ will. If we are to contend for the ACC title this year, we sure as heck did play like it today!!!

Overall, disappointing today, but, perhaps what we needed so that CPJ will light a serious fire under the team’s a@# this week. It was entirely too easy for them to run on us today. CJ Spiller may just run wild on us on Thurs. I thought A. Allen & some other new faces (J. Burnett, S. Hill, Tarrant, & Barnes) all showed some great potential. Passing attack seemed improved (just felt crisper) but the receivers need to tighten up. We have alot of work to do. Defense, up front, especially has me a little concerned although our secondary is in the best shape its been in in a long long time.

The proliferation of blogs has created a hybrid monster of trash talk mated with road rage.
The great thing about sports is we settle it on the field. Talk tough, but in the end we’re all going to eat it at some point. Not too many of us go undefeated.
Paul Hewitt (of all people to invoke today) once made a pretty salient point about the press that stuck with me. He was bemoaning the lack of analysis after the fact, which had been replaced by a bunch of talking heads predicting stuff.
So we all race to see who can be the best prognosticator, and in the meantime learn nothing from the past.

I was very disappointed. I hope it was just a focus issue and Johnson gets them back on track before Thursday.
It sure looked to me as if Nesbitt completely missed hitting the wide open, all by himself receiver on what would have been two sure touchdowns in the first half. I liked that Tech was throwing more, but they have to make those opportunities count.
I’m not nearly as excited as I was yesterday. We’ll see how things go Thursday.

D-dawg, I don’t even like table tennis, dude. I’ve forgotten more about football than you’ll EVER know!! You are right, in that, Athens IS a football factory, b/c nobody goes to class, players get arrested left and right, and your graduation rate is piss poor AT BEST!!! So the only thing the players know IS football!!! I guess the intelligence factor is only equal to the production of their last game played…tisk..tisk..tisk!!!
UGA(Y) always thinks they’re better than they REALLY are!! Ironically, they are (now-were) ranked in the top 15, EVEN THOUGH 95% of their offense from last year is in the NFL this year. They have a rookie qb, an unproven running back, and a defense that was down 31-0 to ‘Bama last year during the “black out”, that eventually became the “Black Eye”. So don’t sit there and tell me that UGA(Y) will be contending for ANYTHING this year, b/c EVERYONE is sick of hearing how great UGA(Y) THINKS they are!!!!

My observations:
1) The team was clearly not focused. The offense was about as good as they were for much of last year, which is to say, not clicking. I was expecting the team to score a lot more in this game, even with second and third stringers. If the team is as good as I think they can be, they should be averaging around 40 pts/game(this means blasting D-1AA teams by scoring in the 50s). The defense should be the big question.
2) I think the passing game is improved, even if it didn’t look like it in the game. Nesbitt made one bad throw, but the receivers/A-backs dropped a couple passes. If the receivers can deal with getting hit, there should be a couple more big plays each game from the passing game.
3) The freshmen: Orwin Smith is a player. I didn’t expect him to be so ready so soon. Izaan Cross has the size to be a beast with some more experience. Stephen Hill looks to be the real deal. And Julian Burnett should probably be starting.
4) The offensive line is still not where it needs to be. Not even close.
5) With more experience Tevin will be a solid backup, though I don’t think he’s yet an upgrade over Jaybo, and I’m one of those who does not believe Jaybo is a solid backup at the D-1A level, just because of his lack of size. Next year will really showcase the depth at QB when Luallen is healthy and Tevin, Jaybo, and Sims have more experience and size.
6) Special teams looks to be improved at this point with regards to punt and kick returns. But the kicking game still needs work.
7) Overall: This team still has a lot of question marks. A good showing against Clemson would go a long way to answering those questions. But Clemson is very athletic, especially on defense. I’m still not convinced that this team is not a middle of the road ACC team, especially being in the Coastal Division. My expectations still range from 6-6 to 10-2. Better expectations than last year, but not much confidence in the high end.
Finally, what the hell Tyrod? I don’t think you’re that great, but everyone else seems to think you’re the bee’s knees. Correct me if I’m wrong, but you’re on the freaking Davey O’Brien Watch List. Where were the flashes of athleticism against Bama?
And one more “What The Hell?!” for the ACC as a whole. For now, I take solace in the fact that the Big 10 showed how crappy it is.

I have to agree with CPJ on the level of our physicality. We have to get tougher up front on both sides of the ball. And we have to value the ball better in games. Josh, this is your third year in college and you have been playing Football all your life and you run the ball in your hands, not tucked away high and tight? I just get upset with not doing the little things. Josh Nesbitt made some great throws down the seam. If the receivers would run hard the entire route and catch the ball the outcome would have been highly favorable. Embry didn’t start running hard until he saw the ball in the air. Allen, just dropped it. Bey Bey just dropped it. Nesbitt running just fumbled it.
On Defense many of you forget that we have had many a game in which we didn’t hear the D-Line names called. What we have is getting better and yes they need to crank it up a bit and they will. Robert Hall needs to loosen up and just play football. Julliam Burnnett looked good. Cooper if you attacked the ball more you would have had two picks. Mario you need to be able to see the ball and reciever to adjust, you didn’t recognize that the ball was overthrown until it hit you on the arm. That was a pick six and stop jumping around, catch the ball. That goes for B. Jefferson too. You had two picks that bounced off your hands. There was a lot of good out there so don’t get me wrong. Its just that if you all want to really make a difference this year those plays must be made. I trust that I am just talking to the bloggers not the players, because I hope they are not reading these. But if you are take heed to what I just said. GO Jackets!!!

We are still better than that Nerd school on North Ave that can’t fill its stadium. We are from the SEC and we are great. I can’t believe Mark Bradley would say anything good about Tech because he is a UGA grad. We will win the rest of our games this season and play for the NC, after crushing you bugs in November. If not for Joe Cox having the flu, the penalties, the yardage, the refs, and the score, we would have beaten OSU by 3 TD’s yesterday. Blah, blah, blah….

Twice you used the word “their” where you should have used the word “there.” If we are to claim superiority over the mutts both athletically and intellectualy, then we should at least know how to spell simple one-syllable words that we use everyday. There is a BIG difference between the words “there”, “their”, and “they’re” as there is between “two”, “too”, and “to”, not to mention “no” and “know” and “threw” and “through”. I expect lousy spelling and grammar out of the redneck mutts who post here, but we Jackets SHOULD be above such a show of ignorance. Also, it’s Jonathan Dwyer, not John Drwyer.

In all my years of following the Jackets and going to games I can’t remember any team that had what one would truly call a “killer instinct.” I have never understood why we have never fielded teams that showed week in and week out that they really WANTED to win. Chan took a lot of flack for inconsistency, but it goes WAY WAY further back than Chan. If you don’t believe me, look at the Wake game when Hamilton essentially lost his choice for the Heismann because the rest of the team didn’t show up. Look at the 1990 UNC game which Tech should have EASILY won, and yet had to come from behind to tie. And look at the Va Tech game from the same year that, as had happened the week before against UVA) was only won by a last second field goal by Scott Sisson. Tech teams have a LONG history for showing up for only some of the big games and few if any of the not-so-big games. I LOVE CPJ’s attitude. I just hope he can instill that into the team. I believe we have the talent; we just need to develop the desire.

I’m glad Tech won, but not how they won.
The offense looked sloppy and when they had some good drives they would fumble it away. I just wonder how much of that was due to rotating players opening game “rust.” The good news is that a lot of teams make great improvements between the first two games. How they play against Clemson is going to tell everyone how this season is going to go. Here’s hoping they show that killer instinct that was missing against Jacksonville State.
I’m still worried about the defense because Jacksonville State, with their back up QB, was able to move the ball pretty well and converting 3rd Downs.
At least the Special Teams showed some improvement and with Tarrant returning punts things should be very interesting. I haven’t been this excited about a punt returner since Rhino’s kid was doing the returns.
On a side note, I’m glad they matched the pants to the helmets. It just looks a lot better.

I find it interesting that some of you nadlickers on here are ridiculing Bradley for being in Tech’s pocket when the last 10 years He’s be slob nobbing over the nadlickers.
I for one don’t think any of the paper media is worth a damn and that’s why I refuse to buy their rag. Bradley will be back in nadlickerville as soon as they upset some one writing about the run for the championship started today for next season.

((((((45-42))))))) hahahahahahhahaha…… oh, sorry guys, wrong board. I sometimes go over to UGA boards and remind them of our win….you know those dumb dogs forget how we have owned them the last several years.

Can’t believe I said that about the matching pants to helmet thing. How insignificant and petty of me, dorky too I guess. Damn quantum physics has me all in a flutter.

What difference does it make what Joe thinks about anything? I don’t think much about his ability to even evaluate the features about defensive end play. Especially his remark is off base about Scott Blair. Blair has done a great job. Looking elsewhere? Let me say “I think not.”

I assume dandydog got banned?
Still can’t figure out why some call this offense a “gimmick”… is the spread a gimmick too? I think UGA had 10+ games worth of tape from last season to prepare for the 2008 match-up.
From a scheme standpoint, I keep reading that perhaps CPJ and Coach Wommack did not want to tip anything off and give Clemson any ideas. I don’t think that’s in all likelihood the case. PJ’s attitude has always been, this is what we do… let’s see if you can stop it.

I would rather have a “gimmick” offense that works than a Mike Booboo coached, Joe Cox led offense that doesn’t. LOL

The Fat Farm Boys from Clemmons looked none too sharp themselves against Middle Tennessee. QB’s were combined 9 of 21. Tiggers were only 4 of 14 on 3rd down convs, and they also lost three fumbles.
Dabo will no doubt have them pumped for their tractor trip to the Big City, but if the Jackets rein in the the turnovers they should win …..

I was there/had season tix & been to nearly every home game since 98 & CPJ isn’t exaggerating – if we play like that against Clemson we’ll get embarrassed in prime time on ESPN! I’m still at a loss as to how we won that game by 20 pts…

Tech looked pretty good against JSU. Seriously, what is up with Scott Blair? We have to make those kicks. That’s going to cost us big if we don’t get him straight. Tarrant looked like a freaking beast returning kicks. It was by far the best returns I’ve seen from Tech in at least 2+ years. And for my fellow Jackets, yes Georgia lost, but stop giving them crap about it. Our team looks good, but we still have a long year ahead with a lot of crucial games including this Thursday. Which is why I came on here, I’ll be there Thursday and so should all Jackets fans that can be there! Let’s go Tech, we know CPJ will have them ready.

Dandy Dog you’re a #1 idiot. But I will say I watched the Ga.-Okl. State game and that call against the Ga. safety taking the head off the OSU receiver was terrible. If a safety can’t make a play like that might as well put offensive players in diapers. Thats football baby. That play changed the game . I really thought UGA would come back until that penalty. And then later in the game the officials didn’t call it against OSU when it truly should have been called. What an ignorant rule change.

Oh by the way Dandy Dog I’m a Tech fan, but a rare one that hopes UGA has a great season. But I won’t pull for them against Tech. Good luck the rest of the year.

Mark did you see any of the Navy Ohio st game? Sure makes me feel good about our coach and the offense we run. If it was GT playing osu yesterday instead of navy, we beat them by 20. I was shocked how a navy team came so close to beating the buckeyes. I bet PJ was smiling after seeing that result.

There were a few things that stood out for me. Nesbitt’s passes on the run. It almost seemed his accuracy improved when his feet were moving. It was when his feet were still that his passes seemed off. J Burnett, D Morgan, and M Burnett were the only ones that seemed hungry on Defense. Tarrant is fun to watch. I’m not sure if it was everyone else’s lack of effort that made these guys stand out or not though.

If it had been Tech playing Ohio State instead of Navy the Buckeyes would have won by 30. Navy played with intensity, and they executed the offense well. Tech did neither.

Neither Gt or Clemson looked all that good Saturday. The difference in Thursday night’s game will be how Clemson’s Parker plays. He didn’t look good against Middle Ten. If we can get to him early and often then it shouldn’t be to difficult for us. CPJ will have these guys ready to play. Clemson’s a big rival so the guys shouldn’t have any problem getting up for this one. GO JACKETS!!!!!

Where will all the ugag fans who are posting ‘play a real team’ be in November when uga plays Tenn Tech???? At least Jax St is a decent FCS team (ranked #19 and picked to win the OVC). Tenn Tech was 3-7 last year (JSU finished 8-3) playing in the same conference as JSU.
FWIW, I think uga should be commended for playing a decent OOC schedule this year. Of course, GT routinely plays decent OOC schedules, so no one crows when they have 3 OOC BCS opponents (it’s not their first time like it is for uga).

Of course Paul Johnson is mad. Football players at Tech aren’t real students and don’t take real classes. They are there to win football games for the glory of Tech football that used to be 100 years ago!

ACC THROWDOWN IN THE ATL : Just Cover
September 10th, 2009

[...] Both teams enter the game after walking through a yawner against overmatched competition. Clemson upended Middle Tennessee State 37-14. It was a workmanlike opener, but now the Tigers fave their first hurdle of the season. Clemson fans have had this game circled for months and a school of thought exists that this game is a make or break for the Tigers true ACC hopes this season. Tech eased by Jacksonville State 37-17 in a sloppy contest that left Jacket Coach Paul Johnson in a pissy mood. [...]

Georgia alumnus here…Tech showed grit and determination. You could tell Nesbitt was running on empty but he found a way to get it done. That showed heart and also is a direct correlation to sound coaching.
I think CPJ will be at Tech for a long time.
That was probably one of the most competitive games I had seen in a while. Great football to watch.
GO DAWGS!
