Live from the Dome: It’s a Matty Ice anniversary!

Matt Ryan delivers against the Titans one year ago. (AJC photo by Curtis Compton)

It was a year ago that the course of the Falcons changed. It was the third exhibition of the 2008 preseason  that told the new administration what it had suspected since the April draft: That it could go with a rookie quarterback as its starter and get away with it.

We forget now, in the light of a rookie of the year award and a 11-5 season of the highest giddiness and even a playoff turn, how bold that decision was. The Falcons had drafted Michael Vick No. 1 overall in 2001, and he hadn’t started as a rookie. But this was a different time, a different rookie.

We look back and we see it as a no-brainer: You have Matt Ryan and you have Chris Redman and D.J. Shockley — who else are you going to start? But we forget how perilous the state of the Good Ship Falcon was in August 2008. They were widely projected as the NFL’s worst team, and they were coming off the most depressing season in the history of North American team sports. (Quarterback in jail, coach in the Ozarks, et cetera.)

It took guts just to draft Ryan No. 3 overall — the consensus, local and otherwise, held that Glenn Dorsey was the better choice — but it took more to say, “He’s our starter in Week 1 of Year 1.” NFL teams had all but gotten away from that, preferring to nurture, preferring to cover their assets in case a big-name draftee flopped. (Tim Couch, Ryan Leaf, Akili Smith, et alia.) But that’s why Matt Ryan wasn’t just a good pick: He was the perfect pick at the absolute proper moment.

We on the periphery looked on the Falcons’ unassuming offensive line — considered the NFL’s worst by some observers, lest we forget — and said knowingly, “Putting a rookie quarterback behind those blockers is just one more indication why the Falcons are bush league.” But the new Falcons had seen two things in mini-camp and then in summer drills that we outsiders couldn’t quite grasp.

1. That Matt Ryan was a different sort of rookie.

2. That this offensive line, under the tutelage of Paul Boudreau, could hold up its end.

We should never underrate the second part. Indeed, on the way into the Dome on the night of that third exhibition last year, Thomas Dimitroff told a reporter that the key to starting Ryan would be the Falcons first having convinced themselves internally they could protect him. The first two exhibitions had given them an indication, and the third — a 17-3 victory over Tennessee — was the clincher. Ryan threw 21 passes, completing 15. (Here’s my column from that night, if you’re so inclined.)

The Falcons named Ryan the starter the next day. He threw a touchdown pass to Michael Jenkins on his first delivery of the regular season. He took a frightful beating in the second week in Tampa Bay but played better in the second half than the first, and that was when the Falcons knew beyond all doubt they’d made the proper choice. The kid was a keeper. The kid was a kid by no measure other than age.

We forget now how major that decision was: Say the line had broken down and Ryan had thrown 32 interceptions — Peyton Manning did as a rookie — and the season after going 4-12 the Falcons had gone 3-13 and their No. 1 draft pick had been a first-year bust. Would we Atlantans have washed our hands of NFL football altogether?

We’ll never know. All we know is this: On Saturday night the Falcons were to play another third exhibition of another preseason, and there’s no reason to feel bad about them or their future or their brain trust. Or their quarterback.

(OK, folks. I’ll be here all night, chatting and cracking semi-wise. If you’d care to join me, I’d be obliged. It’d get mighty lonely in the big ol’ Dome without you.)

Bradley,

When I see Matt Ryan, and hear what people who actually know a thing or two about football (obviously, NOT Vick fans) have to say about Ryan, I can’t help but say that but for the lack of a marriage to the hottest woman in the world, Matt Ryan IS Tom Brady.

I mean, did you ever think Atlanta… ATLANTA… would ever have a Tom Brady? A Joe Montana?

I know, I know, I bury Ryan in hyperbole, but here’s the thing:

I could usually care less about the NFL, except for Tom Brady. My blood runs Red & Black (the Bulldog kind), and the NFL was always something to do on Sunday if I wasn’t working. Saturdays were always my day, until I was laid up in a hospital in Okinawa after having my second knee surgery and saw the magic of Tom Brady as he won his first Super Bowl.

I don’t have a true NFL allegiance to a team, but man, I have no problem admitting my man-crush on Brady. No matter what you think about his coach, Brady is the best QB in the NFL right now, and depending on how his career finishes, I believe he’ll be considered the best ever when all is said and done.

So when I see a lot of Tom Brady in Matt Ryan, I see the potential for greatness this city has never known in professional football in the person of Matt Ryan.

He makes my Sundays more fun.

I think it would be crazy to elevate Ryan to the same plateau as Brady just now, but I will say this: I was more impressed with Ryan last season than I was with Brady in 2001, when he replaced the injured Drew Bledsoe and led the Patriots to the Super Bowl upset of St. Louis.

I’m at home here in the WNC mountains and just had a fright – I have been waiting for this game all week, knowing it was national tv and I could see it live, then I discovered Charlotte is at 8 on the local CBS. Bugkiller, before you put Matt Ryan on the level of 2 QBs that won multiple Super Bowls, he first need to win a play-off game, and you say Vick fans know nothing about football, hahahahahaha. Talk about a man crush, my goodness Bugkiller, sounds like if you could you would have Matt Ryan’s love child. And Mark Bradley, I bet you the Fans in New England will take that Super Bowl in 2001 over a over hyped season that Matt Ryan had. Tom Brady won it all, Matt Ryan won ROY and was one and done in the play-offs. Were you impressed with his 2 INTs in that play-off game against the Rams. HAHAHAHHAHA. Falcons Suck

Hey Big Easy, go take a long walk off a short pier!!!! They ONLY reason that Ryan didn’t win that play-off game in Arizona, is b/c he had NO DEFENSE, which was the difference between Ryan’s team and Joe Flacco’s team (Ravens). Our defense last year was old and slow. Granted, I loved K. Brooking, and he was, until this year, my favorite Falcon. But times have changed, and I don’t think all these people, including yourself, predicting the Falcons sucking this year has ANY validity. Everyone thought we would SUCK last year too, but look what happened!! I predict at least 10-6 and FINALLY Back-2-Back winning seasons!!!!

According to esteemed colleague Chris Vivlamore, who’s sitting to my left, Mike Smith wouldn’t commit to any rotation regarding his quarterbacks this week, Rico.

Seeing that the third exhibition is the one teams see as a dress rehearsal for the regular season, Ryan will — I’m guessing — play into the second quarter. Beyond that, I don’t know.

Hey Mark, What do you think of this quote as far a DJ is concerned: Smith said. “It’s been very competitive. Of course we are not going to just evaluate what takes place in the [exhibition] games. We are going to weigh the whole body of work, which entails mini-camp, training camp and [organized team activities] and what they’ve done in these preseason games.” DJ had a great mini, ota and training camp. I don’t care to see DJ as the 3rd stringer again this year it should be #2 or go and see what other teams my bring him on board. I still think when all the dust settles the QB that has the most talent will be the #2 qb and I believe it is DJ.

Bradley,

Let’s just say that the overrated legacy, Joe Buck, is the worst thing to happen to televised sports in YEARS.

Baseball, football, he ruins it all. He’s absolutely horrible. If his father wasn’t named Jack Buck, he’d be somebody’s accountant in St. Louis.

He has to be the least talented announcer per amount of games he calls.

FOX’s second team, in both baseball and football are much preferable to listening to Buck.

Difference between the Falcons and the Bulldogs:

The Falcons will have to score 30 points in some games because their defense is REALLY young, even though they have a good coordinator.

The Bulldogs will have to score over 30 points in EVERY game, despite the fact that they have a veteran defense because their coordinator is the WORST in the SEC.

On the surface, defense may be the problems, but when you peel back a few layers, you see hope for the Falcons because of BVG.

There is NO hope for Bulldog Nation as long as Martinez retains his job, which he in no way deserves.

You mean the foundation HE built? The players HE made stars?

Who the hell was David Pollack before BVG? A 3rd team FULLBACK.

We had talent, and BVG MOLDED the talent.

You’re one of those idiots who claim Martinez has no talent to work with, right? That’s not only wholly incorrect, it’s intellectually DISHONEST.

So you’re either a liar, or an idiot, or both.

Martinez has had just as much, if not MORE talent than BVG ever had.

What’s the difference? What’s happened to Georgia’s defense? Why aren’t guys getting drafted?

Seems to me that the difference is in the guy who’s teaching, the guy who’s coaching.

So, Gravy, we’ve proven that you’re not only stupid, but that you’re so blindly loyal, that you’re a liar who’ll go to great lengths to excuse MEDIOCRE COACHING.

And why? Why would you do this?

I actually want the Dawgs to be BETTER?

You want them to get WORSE.

You, like Mark Richt, like Bobby Bowden, want to let a coordinator the head coach has an emotional attachment to, to STAY and DESTROY what the head coach has built, instead of doing what’s best for the team.

You know little and you lie much, Gravy. I offered to buy you a beer and bury the differences, but you know what, I don’t drink with liars, or those who lie because they can’t think of a logical way out of an argument.

Lofton, after the big play earlier, takes the absolutely WORST angle possible on that screen.

You can put the blame for that TD on Lofton for taking the bad angle.

Why did he cut backfield, when he should have tried to meet the RB 5 more yards upfield?

Not a mistake you expect the leader of our defense to make.

I think Coach Garner should get most of the credit for Pollack. Garner is recruiting coordinator and D-line coach. Plenty of Defensive Dawgs have been drafted since Martinez took over and he has plenty of talent. Unfortunately that talent has not been as dominating as Pollack and has hed problems with health. I know enough about football and coaching to say this: A game changer makes any coach look decent, and it can make a good coach look great. Also, getting young men to come together and buy in and execute is not as easy as it looks. Otherwise, Ray Goff would still be in Athens.

Gravy, again proving you know less that you claim.

Only the people who criticize Martinez and don’t know what they’re talking about talk about “blitzing.”

BVG didn’t blitz any more or less than Martinez. In fact, I think he actually blitzed LESS.

The difference is, BVG knew when to blitz. BVG also knew how to make snap, in-game adjustments.

Martinez knows none of this.

As Mark said in his AWESOME blog about how inept Martinez truly is:

When the defense broke down when BVG was the DC, the other team scored field goals.

When the defense breaks down under Martinez (about three to four times a year, now), the defense gives up 40 points.

The difference is COACHING.

Not only what happens during the games but what happens during PRACTICE.

Martinez is MOLDING his players the same BVG molded his. He’s not COACHING them as well.

THAT’S the difference.

Not “blitzing.”

Atlanta’s weakness has been exposed. On third and long, they have to drop back into a nickel and if it’s a long enough third, a dime. They simply don’t have the corners to go one on one and they can’t generate enough off the blitz to guarantee a sack. They need to drop back into coverage and pray that someone can pressure the QB before someone beats it.

Defensive Detective…

… with corners as short as the Falcons employ, playing man would be suicide.

Playing a Tampa 2 (cover 2) is what you do with corners this short.

The problem really begins at the line. The problem begins and ends with Jamaal Anderson.

Okay, this is how it works in a Tampa 2.

Your line HAS to get pressure, so you can drop your safeties two deep to protect against the long pass play and your corners and LBs can play up and in the middle in a zone. The LBs cover the middle, sitting in the passing lanes, while the corners will cover the hashes to the sideline.

If you can’t generate a pass rush with your down 4, you’re screwed.

The problem lives with Anderson.

Anderson can be single covered, leaving Abraham to be double covered. But the problem is worse than that.

Because Anderson is so terrible, the opposing offense doesn’t even have to use a tight end or a back to chip Anderson… to help out, basically.

The right tackle can handle Anderson all by himself.

This means the tight end can find the seem route, without having to chip down on Anderson, meaning he can find the hole in the zone quicker than her normally would.

Also, this means the backs can get to the flat quickly and take the dump pass in front of the zone for easy 5 yard completions, or, because Anderson keeps on letting himself get blocked down on screen plays, letting the backs break containment, this means that screens are going to be killer as well.

So, to answer your question, playing man would be worse.

But the defense is breaking down because Anderson isn’t pulling his weight. Not even close to pulling his weight. He’s bringing the whole defense down with him.

@ TradeMark – correct me if I’m wrong, but I haven’t seen the Falcons corners try man-to-man on 3rd and long…I know it would be nice to have tall corners but I think even our short fast (but young and inexperienced) corners would have an easier time sticking with one guy the whole time than trying to execute a zone without much of pass rush…I think the qb’s in the nfl can exploit these simple zones easier than man to man…let our athletes be athletic and stop thinking, too much thinking and not enough doing if you ask me…seems we are getting “too schemey” on secondary coverage, would like to get back to basics this week in practice leading up to 1st game

Defensive Detective Well, no, they don’t. Especially when there’s a personnel match up with a taller- athletic receiver. There you see plays like you do in the 1st quarter, there the receiver, despite very tight coverage, is able to just outposition and out-leap the shorter corner. Don’t get me right, Grimes has game, and leaping ability, but it has to be perfect for him to break up a pass like that. Houston’s problem is he still looks like he gets lost out there every so often.

Best wishes to Michael in Philly although to this day I don’t understand the mix with McNabb. Yes, I have heard everything but still kinda strange.

I just want the FALCON fan base to back THIS team and not worry about the past… we all know we have not had back to back winning seasons ever.

Seriously, I’m no genius, but I pretty well explained how Anderson is destroying the Falcons’ defensive scheme with his lackadaisical play, his slow motor, and his general ignorance of how to play defensive end.

And is it true that McKay actually drafted this guy without seeing him work out, or having him in for a work out?

The Falcons could have gotten Okoye for crying out loud!!!

Even though Matty Ice can sling the rock around, I am looking for VERY LONG offensive possesions with tons of running and very short TE passes to keep the clock moving to win games this year because this falcom defense is going to need long breaks on the bench and then come flying at the QB with a crazy blitz ratio to try to screw up opposing offenses…still think the coaches should try more man to man coverage, even with our short CB’s, would rather force the QB to throw a perfect high ball than those easy “dump it into the zone’s seam” lobs that have been killing us

I know.

But in the end, he was on the field for most of those 3rd down plays.

He was the DE who let himself get blocked out of the play and lost containment on the corner on the screen that went for the TD.

When you play a Cover 2, it is imperative that your line can get a rush. Your blitzes have to be called when needed, and we know BVG has a good feel for when to call a blitz.

But you need to get a rush with your down 4.

Anderson’s presence on the field impacts so much more than just trying to get pressure. Tight ends and backs can release without having to chip him because the opposing team KNOWS their tackle can handle him easily.

I mean, I actually saw Anderson doing some ridiculous things with his hands that looked like patty-cake with the right tackle.

He has no moves, his footwork is sloppy, and he gets no leverage, which is why he finds himself on the ground a lot.

If you’re only as strong as your weakest link, Anderson is the weakest link I’ve seen on an Atlanta defense since Booker was roaming the secondary.

Yeah, he’s THAT bad.

The positives: The second-team offense pulled it out, and the second-team defense didn’t collapse.

The negatives: Well, you witnessed them, same as I did.

We CAN win just on relying on the O. We have one of the most talented Offenses in the NFL. But the D really needs to get better and fast.

really nice play from Redman and the receivers. He looks sharp so hopefully he can reliably back up Ryan this year. Since the pass rush is going to be virtually non existant. I sure hope they find at least one veteran CB from somewhere.

Long ago, I learned not to read too much into preseason games. I saw Tampa Bay teams coached by Sam Wyche look good in the preseason and then hit double-digit losses in the regular season.

But I am going to take one thing seriously out of Saturday night’s preseason game between the Falcons and Chargers. That’s the Atlanta defense.

It didn’t look good at all and that’s a growing reason for concern. We all knew the Falcons would be entering this season with five new starters on defense and that means there is going to be some transition.

But shouldn’t we be seeing some positive signs by now? Probably. But we haven’t. In the only preseason game that really matters (because the starters play a fair amount), Atlanta’s defense struggled. Yes, San Diego has a good offense, but LaDainian Tomlinson wasn’t even playing. It didn’t matter because the Chargers barely ran the ball.

They were throwing it and throwing it very well. In the first half, the Chargers had somewhere around 250 passing yards. That’s not good news for any defense and every offensive coordinator the Falcons face in the regular season will be watching the video blueprint of how to carve up Atlanta’s defense.

The Falcons aren’t going to go out and blow up their defense at the end of the preseason. They’re going with what they’ve got and that’s a little scary. They could have gone out and grabbed some blue-chip defensive backs in the offseason. But they didn’t.

They’re going with Brent Grimes and Chris Houston as their starting cornerbacks and Erik Coleman and Thomas DeCoud as their starting safeties, for better or worse. If the Falcons are going to make the best of this, they need to do some of the same things they do with their offensive line. They don’t have a tremendous amount of talent there, but they make the most of it because they hide their weaknesses.

They need to do the same thing with the secondary. The best way to do that is with a pass rush. They’ve got an elite rusher in John Abraham, but they need more than that. They need third-year pro Jamaal Anderson to step up from the very start of the season. Anderson was a top 10 pick in 2007 and he’ll be on the bench if he doesn’t start quickly.

The Falcons have Chauncey Davis, Lawrence Sidbury and Kroy Biermann as alternatives to Anderson. One, or some combination, of all those defensive ends will have to step up or the secondary really might be in trouble.

TD and Mike Smith and Co. are going to have one hell of a time trying to sort out which recievers make this team if they keep playing like they were tonight. Bergeron, Weems, Ferguson, Booker all looked great, and thats in addition to White, Finneran, Jenkins.

Harry Douglas who?

Didn’t we end last year blowing a 3rd and long? They shredded our defense. I am sorry but still have zero confidence in BVG. I know it is just preseason and we are young but converting a 3rd-10, 3rd-17, and 3rd-24 in the same half of football shouldn’t happen period. We could wake up week 4 and be 1 and 3 if we don’t get that straightened out. No easy ones this year.

Questionable – J. Norwood (ATL): Hit by Tito Santana flying forearm

Back from the locker room: No updates on Norwood or William Moore.

Smith was obviously displeased with his starting defense but stressed it’s a team defense, not just the defensive backs. And he said he was actually encouraged by the play on first and second downs. As for third down … he said an offense will be happy to complete 10 percent of its throws on third-and-10-plus, and Rivers/Volek seemed to complete all of theirs.

A late comment for bigeasy830:

Your right, most great QB’s were never one and done in the playoffs,
because most great QB’s didn’t make the playoffs in their rookie year.

NP though, because your 4-12 prediction establishes your level of bias in the matter.
