Tech’s Morgan: “We want to win the ACC championship”

Derrick Morgan: Even if you hold him, you can't contain him. (AJC photo by Jason Getz)

Derrick Morgan: Even if you hold him, you can't really stop him. (AJC photo by Jason Getz)

Most of the other Jackets trudged the two blocks from their practice field to the locker room, but Derrick Morgan, the splendid defensive end, rolled up in an SUV. A young woman had happened by and had offered Morgan and two Georgia Tech teammates a lift, and they weren’t inclined to say no.

“In the nick of time,” Morgan said, smiling. “That walk after practice feels long.”

What this tells us: Derrick Morgan is a pragmatist. He’s not one to traffic, so to speak, in posturing. Why walk when you can ride? Why jump up and down shouting, “Hey, look at us,” when you figure your team has the wherewithal to make people notice yet again?

Some Tech folks were disappointed the Jackets weren’t ranked higher than No. 15 in the coaches’ and Associated Press preseason poll. Morgan wasn’t among them. “I didn’t think we’d be that high,” he said. “We were embarrassed by LSU [in the Chick-fil-A Bowl]. I was expecting us to be lower.”

This isn’t to say Morgan expects Tech to underperform in Year 2 under Paul Johnson. “We want to win the ACC championship,” Morgan said, “and then we have to take it to the next level: We want to win a bowl game. We haven’t won one of those in I-don’t-know-how-long.” [Tech's last postseason victory: Dec. 21, 2004, over Syracuse in the Champs Sports Bowl.]

Morgan plays defense, but he also sees Tech’s stylized offense every day. A visitor posits the semi-popular notion that opponents will be better able to stop Johnson’s spread option in 2009 because they had a look at it in 2008. A valid point?

“Uh, no — just to be blunt,” Morgan said. “Seeing it can’t get you ready for everything. And how long are you really going to have to prepare for it? A week at the most.”

Morgan remembers the first time his defense went against the first-team offense in spring practice 2008: “We didn’t know what hit us. We knew what it looked like, but we saw its potential unleashed.”

And what’s it like to face that offense? “Not fun. You have to be really cognizant of cutback blocks and the blind side. You have to be really assignment-sound.”

As for Tech’s D: Much has been made over Morgan’s missing linemates — Michael Johnson, Vance Walker and Darryl Richard, all drafted by NFL teams — but it must be noted that the Jackets return a starter at every other defensive spot. It must also be noted that Morgan, whom Tech insiders considered the best of the linemen, believes he has improved.

“I was looking at some tape of last year,” he said, “and I think I’m a lot better now. I know there’s more attention on me, but we’ve still got a great defensive line.”

Will Tech win the ACC title?

So, if you’re planning to categorize Tech as a one-year wonder, you won’t find a willing audience wearing No. 91. “I would not agree with that,” Morgan said, smiling again. He also said this: “With the type of talent we have, we can compete with the best teams in the country. Our goal is to win every game.”

And this, remember, is a pragmatist speaking, not some dewy-eyed dreamer. But before we leave Derrick Morgan, we must present his one blue-sky dream. That long slog from the practice field? He sees a workaround.

“We need one of those things they have in airports,” he said. “A moving sidewalk.”

At last check, there are a few engineers on campus. Get moving, people!

Morgan wants to win the ACC, but he also wants to win a bowl game. Based on the recent history of the pathetic ACC in BCS games, I’d suggest those are two mutually exclusive goals.

I think Georgia Tech will be a good team, but Bradley makes it seem like Tech was incredible last year. The win over Georgia was huge, but Tech still finished the season with four losses. If not for a ghastly fumble by FSU at the end of the game, Tech was staring at another defeat in that game as well. There’s no way Tech deserves more than a preseason #15 rank.

Let’s also not forget that for as good as this offense was at times last year, the defense was hardly impressive. Even in the big win over a putrid Georgia defense, Tech gave up 42 points, and then 38 to a weak LSU team (who were experimenting with a brand new QB).

So yes, I definitely think Tech can match last year’s success, but is that all that impressive? A 10-4 season? Or a 9-5? Certainly not by the standards of that other state school.

Hey 12….when UGA(Y) get’s THREE more National Championships to match Tech’s FOUR, THEN and ONLY then, come talk to me. Also, all you UGA(Y) fans are so diluted into your football team, you can’t see the forest through the trees!! You guys HONESTLY think your going to win 9-10 games this year with a ROOKIE QB, an UNPROVEN running back, and a suspect defense that was down 31-0 to Alabama last year at HALFTIME!!! And then Tech comes to Athens and beats you 45-42? You guys must be smoking the good stuff up in Athens.

JR, to rebut your points… FSU also would have been staring at a bigger defeat if Nesbitt wasn’t hurt and Shaw didn’t turnover the ball on both possessions following the injury. VT would be staring at a defeat if a “questionable” helmet to helmet call wasn’t made. LSU would have been closer if you completely ruled out every special teams play. Now if you forget about the excuses and look at it another way, Tech was 9-3 and every weakness was obvious. Fumbles, passing game, special teams. If they improve as you would expect a team to do on the obvious weaknesses then they “should” be better and in contention. But hey, it’s all hype. Lets just wait till toe meets leather and we find out first hand if Johnson is for real. My money is on yes.

Seriously people…let’s get some things straight here. First off I’m not biased to your UGA/GT feud because I’m from the North and we dont know a thing about College ball. But it sounds like the Tech fan base seems to think they have caught up to talent level and national recognition that UGA has built during the Richt era. Not even close…Yes Tech had a great win vs UGA this year (about time) but they barely won a few of their victories this year and got embarrassed by a LSU team.
And the fact that the ACC has no power houses this year besides an over ranked VT they do have a chance to win the weak ACC this year. But that’s like saying you won a fart contest. If they played in the SEC they wouldnt win 5 games.

I’m always amused when fans live in the past and tout past accomplishments, especially Dawg fans. The 8-1 record and other historical accomplishments mean very little to what will happen this year and in future years.

The main reason is that not only is Chan Gailey not here, but Dave Braine is also gone. The attitude and atmosphere has changed. No longer does our AD or HC believe that we would be lucky to win 7-8 games. A higher standard is not wished for but expected. For the first time, since probably the Bobby Dodd years. GT fans truely believe in its coach and staff and their ability to be successful and repeat it every year. We came close during the O’Leary years, but those years do not come close to what is happening on the flats today. In addition, while Richt has not changed and will always be a great coach. It seems that all is not well with the staff because of the disconnect and under performance with results to talent UGA has on campus, especially on defense.
Dawg fans, if you believe Willie M’s claim that if only players tackled better than…you will have a long, long season. I’m not afraid to say that our offense last year with an inferior OL outplayed (ie. converted TE playing OT)a Dawg D with supposedly superior talent.

Yes, there is change in the winds and it is not going away. BTW,GT is also beginning to enjoy similar success in its other sports because of our AD-DRad. MB-a good article would be the tremendous impacthe has made on GT athletics. He is the main reason UGA fans are irritated these days. He hired CPJ among other enhancements to GT athletics. I look forward to our annual grudge match, we’ll see who wins. Be prepared because it will be a war.

homer – i have a cousin that went to tech, and I can understand where you’re coming from. That view that you claim is shared by the rest of the country is completely a tech perspective. And can you blame tech fans? Their’s is a culture that preaches and breeds hate, demonizing, and ridiculing all things Georgia. They erstwhile thing everyone else shares this view. It’s really amazing how mindf*cked tech students are.

Man there are some stupid redneck dawg fans on here today. One says tech wouldn’t win 5 games if they played in the sec. They went 2-1 last year moron. And this year we will be 3-0 after we beat the dawgs again. The 2009 recruiting class is top 20 and would be top 10 if we had more scholarships. So shut your braindead mouths. Only 10 days to rub it in when the rednecks get blown out against Ok state. Can’t wait to see the final tally of the sec vs the acc. Of the games i know of, gt will win 3, nc state will win the opener with usc. and clemson will beat usc at the end. the only loss i see is fsu to uf.

Jon Jenkins, I’m saying that we’ll be delighted to keep everything relative to football, but are bombarded by ‘nerd’, ‘lives in our mom’s basement and using her internet’, ‘can’t get the ladies’, blah, blah, blah….. just keepin’ things on an equal playin’ field (Truly, tis a guilty pleasure that, from time to time, I enjoy). I was recruited to play football for SMU just before the ‘death penalty’ was imposed. I enjoyed the campus and hated that things worked out the way they did…. In short, it’s easy to make fun of either side of this ball. If you can’t hack it, don’t participate.

OK, here’s a Dawg fan who don’t care much about who has more national championships in ancient history. In my life time, both GT and UGA have ONE.

I also don’t worry myself much about all the noise GT fans are making these days. They beat us last year in Athens and they deserve it. I don’t like Pi$$onaDawg’s monicker (prefering to identify myself by the team I love instead of by a team I hate), but I agree with his point completely. They’ve had to take it for 7 years. I’ll glad it take it like a man this year.

I’d much prefer to see GT become a national powerhouse again. I think it would be fitting for the state of Georgia to have 2 top 10 teams every year. There’s enough talent in GA for that to happen. So I’m pulling for Tech to be undefeated when we come to town.

And since no self-respecting Dawg fan could not take at least one dig at GT, I have to say that an improved GT team will finally stop dragging down UGA’s strength of schedule rankings!

As good as Paul Johnson’s offense has been in recent memory, it is also worth noting that Johnson doesn’t have a splendid record in his career. As coach at Navy, he was 45-29. That’s nothing stellar. Sure, he’s got better players now at Tech, but he’s playing against equally better players as well. His first year at Tech was representative of what he’s done his entire career – confuse a lot of defenses, win a lot games, but rarely put up anything better than a 4-loss season.

Mark,
You skimmed the surface with your questioning the loss of the three D-linemen and how that might impact this season for Tech but I think once again that there is too much focus on how Tech’s offense will fare in season two or should I say how opponents will fare against Tech’s offense having had exposure and film to study. The pointed questions should be “you lost middle of your defense to the NFL draft. It was obvious from the UGA and LSU games that your defensive backfield is a liability, save for Burnett, so please explain to me how you plan on being better?
For all the hoopla, justifiably so, about UGA’s inability to tackle in the Tech game the same could be pointed out about Tech’s inability to put pressure on Stafford and their D’backs were equally gashed by UGA’s receivers.
Funny how a once in eight tries W can help one to gloss over this fact.

To add to my post for verificaton:
UGA Had 22 1st Downs of which 19 were by pass.
Tech had 421 yds rushing (and as you mentioned completed 1 pass)
UGA had 407 yds Net Passing Yards(lost 12 yds on 2 sacks)
UGA Averaged 10.2 yds. per catch
Stafford had 5 Passing TD’s
UGA was 4-4 in the Red Zone.
Having lost the gut of their Defense…
Seems to me Tech better be REALLY good on offense or they are going to be a pedestrian 7-5 or 8-4 this year.

Champaign Dawg

Timbo. Class of 94 myself. Not trying to be difficult. I just think this is more nuanced than you think it is. Clearly, UGA’s got a bunch of big rivals. And I think right now, most UGA fans would say Florida is the biggest one (at least the one we’d most like to beat). But I think alot of fans (especially those older than you and me) see GT as our biggest rival. The “piss on a dawg” song is just a silly little tradition and I’ve got no problem with it. Especially given the way the rivalry has gone in recent decades. I don’t think its sad. Its just a tradition. Just like “to hell with Georgia Tech” is.

so….back to the fight song. I am not doubting your experience of hearing folks substitute whatever team we’re playing into the lyrics. I never heard it myself. But I’ll choose to trust that was your experience. (i’m still struggling with the idea of singing to hell with Middle Tennessee State” but that’s just me).

Regardless, whenever you hear that fight song in the off-season or just on its own, 9 times out of 10 you’re gonna hear GT in the lyrics.

GT Alum, you’re going to go back to lower sub-division Georgia Southern to defend Paul Johnson? Lots of coaches had stellar records at the lower subdivision schools (see Bobby Johnson for Vanderbilt), but that doesn’t explain away the fact that in the seven years Johnson has been at a coach at the highest level of collegiate football, he’s only once had a season where his team lost less than four games.

It should come as no surprise that coaches would not want to face Paul Johnson. He runs a bizarre offense, so it takes a lot of extra work to prepare for it. But not wanting to face him doesn’t entail coaches can’t handle it. Les Miles didn’t mind facing him last year, that’s for sure.

Instead of relying on polls to defend your coach, face the facts. I’m not saying Johnson can’t put together a complete, dominant season. I’m just saying that at the top level of college football, he hasn’t been able to do that, save one year at Navy when he went 10-2.

And to go back to your earlier point, you said Tech only lost to LSU because of special teams. The special teams’ disaster was in part attributable to Paul Johnson. He made a boneheaded call, on top of the fact that his vaunted offense couldn’t put a single touchdown in the end zone.

First off, special thanks to Champaign Dog – you clearly are the champaign of dog posters. I hope you come around more often as opposed to most of the hacks on here.

“UGA has five or six rivals that hate our guts (tech chief among them). Tech has one.”

Except for Clemson (huge rival); VT (huge rival); FSU (medium); Miami (medium); and UNC (medium).

I guess you could also include Auburn, although its a shame we don’t play them anymore.

“As good as Paul Johnson’s offense has been in recent memory, it is also worth noting that Johnson doesn’t have a splendid record in his career. As coach at Navy, he was 45-29. That’s nothing stellar.”

45-29 at Navy is a MAJOR accomplishment. Particularly that ND game. What a game!!

“Champaign – class of ‘99 here and the entire time I was there the student section would sub for whoever we were planning. Maybe it was like that prior to 1999, but that was the case then as it is now. There’s even a contingent that spells out G-E-O-R-G-I-A.”

First, Tim, you should probably learn the history of your own school a little better. G-E-O-R-G-I-A is the official song. I’ve been to athens a fair share for games other than tech, and there are still a LOT of people who say to hell with GT even when they aren’t playing GT. You don’t see that the other way around.

Champaign
Oh really? So uga is one of the worst teams in your conference? How about florida with 2 acc games last season and ole miss which beat florida? Yeah those are some bad teams. Dumbass.

Oh and champaign. Alabama was another one. So out of the 10 games, half were against top 15 sec teams. So much for making the argument the top acc only played and won the weak sec. And of those games, the acc was 2-3. Yeah that sure makes your argument. Dumbass.

UGA fans must realy be worried about Tech.
So many of their putrid comments on a site they like to belittle.
Sounds like a lot of jealousy, paranoia, delusional thinking.
Quite revealing of their impotence.

You dawgs try to act like you have rivals other than us. It’s no rival when you lose to Florida every single year for eternity. There is no other good team in the SEC other than Florida. We would tear LSU apart if we played them during the regular season. We were just getting ready for this year when we practiced for the bowl game last year. Our season was already made. We were projected to win 3 or 4 games and won 9 including stomping you in the second half and beating your AZZ. You were ranked number One and tanked it. You have no quarterback or running back this year so get ready now for another bashing in November I predict 56-6. You will never ever stop this offense even if you had 6 months to get ready for it. Your defense is pathetic. Your season will be over after Oklahoma State runs you out of the stadium. What did T.Boone predict? Wasn’t it 397 to 3 ?

POAD, we all know or should know it’s all in fun. These are student athletes we are talking about. It’s not life and death we are discussing here. It’s more important than that. College Football.
Take a deep breath my fellow football friend. At the end of the day does all this rhetoric really matter?

And to think I thought Bama-Auburn was hateful. I follow both the Georgia teams so I’m glad to see Tech is back. I think as long as Tech has Paul Johnston they and this series are from now on going to be competitive. Its good to see an intense rivalry reborn. Plus I love option football.

This year, CPJ will probably win a Coach of the Year award, again. It feels good having a great coach on the sidelines. It’s not just his X’s and O’s, the guy flat out knows how to win and run a program. I expect the two biggest issues from last year will be non-issues this year, special teams and turnovers. Also, Tech fans don’t fret, the O-line and D-line will surprise many. The D will improve, just as much as the O will. Remember these guys were very young, learning a new D and O. This second year is going to be fun!

Stinger, you make me laugh. I would do anything to see the dorks play UGA’s schedule this year. I would bet 6-6 at the BEST. UGA will go 10-2 before their bowl game.

georgia does have one thing going for them if they hold up and stay healthy all season and that is their o line…give ANY quarterback enough time and they will make the right choice…we will see murray by the cocktail party, because cox may get his ballz rocked

This blind Tech optimism is just comical. Sure, Tech had a good year by their standards, and did beat Georgia for the first time in 8 years (despite giving up 42 points). Despite this, Georgia had more wins than Tech, and won a New Year’s Day bowl game with relative ease (as opposed to Tech, who put up 3 points and got annihilated and completely embarrassed by an average LSU squad who Georgia handled easily in Baton Rouge). Pulpwood thinks Tech will not be as good as they were last year, will not win the ACC, and will lose 4 or more games. Look for opposing defensive coordinators to take a look at the Peach Bowl tape, oh, 1500 times, and mirror what LSU did….. 7-5 with a loss to Georgia and a trip to the Music City Bowl. The beatdown will begin with Clemson on Thursday evening, September 10. Back to reality for the North Avenue Irregulars, who can return to hiding.

Timbo C., sorry the song hurts your feeling so bad, but it’s a tradition. Not to be confused with obsession. It’s true, that we’re not uga’s biggest fans….again, there’s a reason it’s called “Clean Old Fashioned Hate”.

Champaign Dawg, we just play the games that are scheduled…it IS the all mighty sec, afterall. I do know that one of those wins was against the preseason #1 team in the nation. (Sorry for the low blow….you seem like a reasonble Dawg fan)

Mark, great read on Morgan. I expect great things from him and others on the Defensive side this year. A lot of people seems to forget they only lost three people on defense last year. I do believe the defense will be pretty good. I like others feel this will be Morgan’s last year, but we shall see.

Let College Football start soon! Oy! “Ramblin Wreck!”

Here is five reasons UGA will flop this year:

1) Overated (See last year)
2) UF, LSU, USC & GT
3) Can’t win the big one (See 30 years and counting to a Nat Champ.)
4) Arrests of various players
5) History: Lot of wins but few against top talent See #1, 2 &3
