I’ve picked Georgia to lose to Oklahoma State by 10 points. T. Boone Pickens, who has more money than Arthur Blank and I put together, likes Georgia to lose by 363 points.
When I read T. Boone’s “predicted” score of 387-24 in a post by Terrance Harris on Fanhouse — thanks to observant reader Dink for the tip — my first thought was that the oil wildcatter has obviously been scouting Willie Martinez. But after reading Dave Sittler’s original column in the Tulsa World, I’m not sure this was an actual prediction. Sittler used the word “requested,” which is a bit different.
Example: I would like to request that Mr. Pickens give me 165 million bucks, but I’m not predicting he will.
T. Boone is 81. (He and the fourth Mrs. Pickens traveled to Athens in 2007 when OSU lost to the Bulldogs. Both Boone — his pals drop the “T” — and Madeleine spent some time in the press box. They seemed nice.) Three years ago the oilman gave the OSU athletics department $165 million. The refurbished edifice Georgia will enter on Sept. 5 is, you’ll be shocked to discover, named Boone Pickens Stadium.
TBP is already on record as believing his Cowboys will enter their regular season finale against Oklahoma unbeaten. Sittler quotes Pickens thusly: “I know I stuck my neck out in that Tulsa World column when I said we’re going to be 11-0. And I still believe that’s what we’re going to be, but it’s going to be tough getting there. We have to beat Georgia first if we’re going to be 11-0, so I think we’re going to win that game.
You’ll also be shocked to know I have some experience being on the wrong end of a projected blowout. I picked the Rams to beat the Patriots 42-3 in Super Bowl XXXVI, and the Patriots not only beat my 39-point spread but won the doggone game. So now I’m thinking T. Boone might have jinxed his ‘Boys. And, since I’ve also picked OSU, jinxed me.
Great, I say. Just great. Give a guy $3 billion and he thinks he owns the world.
(Oh, and here’s another column on T. Boone, this by Jenni Carlson of the Oklahoman. If her name rings a bell, there’s a reason. Her column provoked the infamous Mike Gundy rant, for which we should all be eternally grateful.)

The thought that Okl St D is going to be so much better is just crazy. Yeah, Gary Gibbs came to GA and turned Donnan’s D around from like 80 or 90 something the previous year to the high teens or 20 something the next year, but he had talent and depth to work with. Okl St has a little talent but no depth and a gutted secondary. I just don’t see it! My prediction is that GA’s D is going to be suffocating and the O is going to shuffle in all those linemen and pound the ball to eat up clock. They will get yards in the air as well. I’ll take GA -6 to win the game by at least 10 pts and T BOONE should do the same and get back some of his money.

For those saying it is not a must win game are crazy. Losing the opening game tends to lead to mediocrity or worse. It might be OK to lose a close game against an elite team like UF, OU, TEX or USC but lose to a middle of pack Big 12 team certainly will show that the Dawgs are middle of the pack or worse in the more rugged SEC. Lose to OSU and we could certainly be in danger with South Carolina, Vandy, Kentucky and Tennessee. Win this game…and we likely beat all four of these others and are top tier with the LSU, Ala., and UF.

Uh, guys, his grammar was correct in that sentence, so don’t get too excited or you are the ones looking foolish. Here we go:
The reason it is correct to say, “…who has more money than Arthur Blank and I put together” as opposed to “me,” is because “than” signals that this portion of the sentence is functioning as an adverbial dependent clause within the larger relative clause describing Pickens. As such, this clause has as its subject “Arthur Blank and I” and an understood “do” as its verb. In other words, the full thought of the sentence is:
“T. Boone Pickens, who has more money than Arthur Blank and I [do] put together, likes Georgia to lose by 363 points.” If you used the objective pronoun “me” instead of the subjective “I,” you see how incorrect that is.
Sure, most of us would say, “He has more money than me,” but that is wrong; it should be “than I.” Just because most of us don’t speak that way doesn’t make it wrong.
Similarly, people often end sentences with prepositional phrases, and they usually confuse who and whom when asking questions whose verbs take direct objects, such as, “Whom did Pickens pick to win the game?”
Now before you call me a Tech fan, I’m a UGA History Major, class of 06, and I love football and dislike Mark Bradley.
See, they actually enforced proper grammar when we wrote papers at my fine Alma Mater, and I don’t want ignorant Dawg fans sullying our reputation.

Probelem is this will be Floridas best team ever, Techs best in 20 yrs plus 2 other out of conference BCS teams, UT and Auburn will be better. Vandy and UK get better every year, and South Carolina gets up for us more than any other team. 8-4 is always possible in this league. When you have the talent UGA does so is 11-1. OSU against good defenses last year:
Texas – 24
Texas Tech – 20
Oklahoma – 41
That last one is worrying, but the others show that the Cowboys can be contained. As long as we can move the ball (on a mediocre defense, let me add) I don’t foresee a blowout. Either UGA wins big or this will be a close one, but we won’t get blown out.

Tech will stall when all the coaches simplify the defense scheme to stop a very simple High school offense that a kid can operate. The defenses in college football a so complicated due to the spread and speed of the game, and when you need to take the breaks off and be disciplined it causes your players to actually play slower. That is a fact.

PT,
gotta disagree with you on the GT offense. The offense will work at a high level this year IF Nesbitt can pass and keep defenses honest. Teams that can be disciplined and tackle effectively will stop a lot of the running game but CPJ is going to add more to the offense including faking the run-twice, and then throwing. Can Nesbitt pass?
The other key to their season is the defense. The D line is rebuilt and that is why he has changed the scheme to hide the shortcomings at DT and take advantage of the speed at LB and the secondary. I still believe the D will cost them a couple of games in shootouts like 38-35 and stuff like that.
That is why I am excited about UGA because we have depth on the OL for the 1st time in 7 years and depth and talent on the D line and at LB. Our secondary is young but extremely athletic and will get better as the year goes on.
Can’t wait for football

T Boone Pickens is just another con man. Remember how when oil prices were high he was going to get us all switched to natural gas? Said he didn’t need anymore money he already had plenty, just doing it for the good of the country. Mysteriously enough, when oil prices went down where he wouldn’t make so much money, his natural gas idea slithered off into the night. Similar scenerio with his wind farms. He’s just another gas bag who likes to hear himself talk and get press.
As for OSU-Georgia, I don’t follow college football so I don’t really have a clue but I’m thinking no team could get in kickoffs and 3 and outs quick enough to win by 363 points.

RAMBLE ON – you talk a big game considering you’ve had one year of success. You sound like Bulldog fans after Donnan beat up Spurrier in 1997. They had anointed a new era. We know how that turned out. A statistical Techie geek such as yourself should be familiar with “sample size” and know that one good year isn’t enough to justify your trash talking, you imbecile. When UGA wins the next 7, you can have your moment in the sun again in 2016.

Dawginlex, agree to a point. Read my post. I was being an Arse about the High school offense. My point is the defensive coaches need to simplify. Coach Willy M went to a simple 4-4 d last yr. Probelm was we did not tackle. His scheme worked

My first inclination is to look at the Texas Tech/Ole Miss Cotton Bowl. As a general rule whenever one of those June Jones triple veer, double jelly wingbone, shoot and poot offenses run up against a fundamentally sound defense, it gets exposed.
However, I just used the two words ‘fundamentally’ and ’sound’. While most discussion of this game is centered on Willie Martinez, I’m thinking the real key to GA winning centers on Cox not getting rattled first game and throwing more than one pick.
Also, unlike the Texas Tech and Hawaii offense of short, quick slant passes, OSU can really run the ball.

WM’s scheme worked for the first half. Then, the other team adjusted and we didn’t. Also, the offense in the 1st half scored points and in the 2nd half we fumbled on a KO and got away from abusing the GT secondary throwing the ball the way we did in the 1st half.
A lot of that is coaching. A lot of it was a lack of depth on the D line. The turnovers killed us too.

Bob, maybe I a student of history as well and realize that every year GT has beaten UGAg, they did it the next year too. For the last 30-40 years or so.
Maybe, I also realize we got the same team with more experience coming back, while ya’ll have lost 3 1st round draft picks, and a QB whose game experience is against a team that hadn’t won a game in like 17-18 previous tries (Colorado).

OSU can run the ball against teams who are suprised by a running play. Beating the option style teams all comes down to play by your defensive ends. Two years ago good ends for UGA and we beat fla. Last year no good ends and we lose to FLA and GT. If we have production at the defensive end position, we will beat OSU, FLA, GT and LSU.

I guess the general assumption by most here is that UGA won’t be able to find their a$ses with both hands and a mirror, but OSU will be hitting on all cylinders. This will be the 1st game of the season for both teams. I expect a sloppy game with a lot of substitutions (as Stillwater will probably be 110 degrees). Dogs are slightly deeper and will win an ugly one based on depth.
FYI, OSU has one of the best O-Lines in the country … just saying.

The U.S. News & World Report college ratings are out today, and Georgia schools retained their rankings from last year for the most part.
I think the rankings influence where students go to college. (I also think many students are influenced by the “Colleges that Change Lives” franchise.)
Many people dismiss college status as a factor, but there’s evidence that where you go to school impacts how much you earn.
PayScale Inc., which compiles compensation data, says the median starting salary for Ivy League graduates is about 30 percent higher than that of liberal-arts college graduates. However, the study doesn’t address whether that pay differential is the result of a better education, or simply because the Ivies attract higher-achieving students in the first place. (I would also ask whether the Ivies attract better connected kids; it’s easier to end up at Goldman Sachs if your mother worked there.)
In its 2009 report, PayScale says the median starting salary for a University of Georgia graduate was $43,900, compared to $60,00 for a Harvard grad, $58,900 for a Georgia Tech grad, and $50,600 for an Emory grad.
I am sorry to report that PayScale also lists degrees that pay you back and teaching and journalism offer some of the lowest returns. The big money is in the STEM fields; science, technology, engineering and math.

Mark Bradley, a fine writer…a very poor prognosticator.
This reminds me of UGA versus Tenn. in the 90s. We would have some nice, shiny skills players and new hope every year heading into the play the Vols…occasionally, we’d even fool the media into thinking we could win.
Of course, then Tenn. would come to town with bigger, faster, better athletes and methodically beat us down. Georgia is going to go into Stillwater and methodically handle OSU. 10-17 point win.
And it won’t be a big deal to anyone afterwards.

Don’t know about ya’ll, but I am having some SERIOUS UGA v. Hawaii Deja Vu on this game….
Hawaii’s offense was unstoppable. Their Quarterback was unstoppable, their recievers were unstoppable….I think the all knowing Gameday guys even predicted that Hawaii was going to win.
Here’s the problem. If we win….. The media is going to go ape s****, and rocket us up in the polls.
Which is why we were ranked #1…..we beat their “darling” in Hawaii, so obviously that means that we HAVE to be #1….because the folks in the media are never wrong.
How do we handle that – especially with the Evil one coming to town the next week? Could be trouble….i see an alabama beat down…….
If we lose….well…..batten down the hatches, and get ready to spend the holidays in sunny shreveport.

UGA’s speed on defense is going surprise them. I think Marcus Wahington will be the “IT” factor at DE in this first game especially. He is fast and maybe considered sort of a hybrid at that pos. ZacRob is a fine QB – but IMHO I think that our D-line is going to put a lot of stress on their running game… hopefully making them one dimensional… thus making them more predictable and more sackable. GA is going to disrupt their offense… and we are going to run the ball religiously… and annoy the crap out of them by converting third and short over and over and over and over again. I say it will be a close game until the 4th quarter when we go up by two TD’s – if we make good on the turnover opputunities that WILL present themselves early and often. Call it… GA 38 OkSt 24

yellow fuzz, since you’re a tech fan, I have a few math problems for you:
If a university were to offer 1 (ONE) free Coke and 2 (TWO) free hot dogs with every ticket purchased, how many Cokes and hot dogs will go unclaimed out when the university STILL can’t sell out their 55,000 seat Pop Warner stadium and sells only 40,000 tickets?
(55,000(1+2)) – (40,000(1+2)) = 45,000.
45,000 Cokes and hot dogs will go unclaimed by terrible Tech fans who can’t be bothered to come see their pathetic team play.
If a team wins 1 (ONE) game against another team in 8 (EIGHT) years, how many times did the other team win?
8 – 1 = 7.
The other team won 7 (SEVEN) times in 8 (EIGHT) years.
Follow up question: Which number is more, 7 (SEVEN) or 1 (ONE)?
Well, everywhere else but Bugtown, 7 (SEVEN) is always more than 1 (ONE). But in Bugtown, the immutable laws of mathematics must not be the same.

7 in 8 years. 14 in 18. Actually, that last one is not intirely true. I mean, because O’Liar was cheating in those three years (as well as getting suspicious ref help), it’s more like 14 in 15 with 3 that don’t count because of cheating, lying cheaters.
Then we can get into the All-time record if you want.
See, it’s amazing that I didn’t think a fanbase could have a worse idea of the scope of history than Florida fans who seem to think that football was invented in 1990 and that their team wasn’t the most historically disappointing football team in the SEC for 100 years.

Okie State is a two dimensional team instead of just Robinson to Bryant. Kendall Hunter is a threat out of the backfield running and catching. He had 1555 yards rushing with 16 touchdowns and 198 yards recieving with another touchdown. But he was stopped by the defensive powerhouse, Oklahoma, 84 yards and wannabe powerhouse Oregon for 37(?). We as fans are focusing on the Robinson-Bryant combination. UGA will be fine if they just keep listening to their coaches and working hard and if they execute, that’s most important, executing! Coaches don’t block or tackle, so they have to lock up, when they tackle, not when they block, because that’s holding. Holding is a penalty, and penalties are bad. UGA cannot afford all those stupid penaties. They have got to run behind their pads and stay low, especially Samuel. Staying low is very important, almost as vital as executing. Staying low is even more important when you are six foot two. CWM has to blitz more, the fact that the Dawgs got burned like a Varsity dog every time they blitzed is not important, if CWM doesn’t blitz on every play he should be fired! I mean it’s not like the cover two ever worked for Tampa Bay! So stay low, run behind your pads, no holding and no late hits. Unless it’s Tebow, then nail that sucker! Oh yeah, and execute! I have learned so much from these football blogs.

Yeah, a previous poster mentioned kendall hunter’s poor production in the last two games of 2008 versus OU and Oregon.
The thing to keep in mind is this: Kendall was injured prior to the OU game. He played hurt and still had 84 yards rushing and 46 receiving, not a bad outing when considering that OU has good defensive personnel. Kendall then had surgery just before christmas and played against oregon while still recovering. The injury and surgery is why he didnt have a bigger game against Oregon.
Kendall hunter is a good back. Nobody really slowed him down until his injury. He had 160 yards in Austin versus Texas and 154 versus Mizzou on the road when Mizzou was ranked #3. Only 102 versus TTech on the road, but OSU fell behind early in that game due to turnovers and dumb plays and bad pass defense which forced them away from the running game.
Say what you want about big 12 defenses, but OU and Texas have the same caliber of athletes as UGA. OU’s Dline is superior to Georgia’s.
Hunter is a good back.

It is reality hijacked, there is no reason outside Georgia to even be talking about this game. A far more interesting game is being played in Atlanta, Bama and Va.Tech. OSU is not Southern Cal or even Penn State. The greatest trick in the college coach’s bag of tricks is to make a team they are playing look better than they are, it is what is wrong with the system. There are probably 10 teams in this area that can give UGA all they can handle and as long as they stay away from as many of those as they can the hype lives on.

By the way, let’s remember that those 3 wins (98-2000), 2 of which were based on BS calls at the end, were taken away because tech cheated with ineligible players. Also, I can’t say enough how pathetic tech people and their team are, when they win 1 in a row, and then run their mouthes like they went undefeated. Is it just me, or was their some sweet justice in the fact that we finished with a better record and higher ranking then the bumblers (and we considered the season disappointing-lol), even after their flukey and rare win against us. Nice behavior after the game, by the way, as it takes a great deal of class to vandalize Sanford Stadium as a way of celebrating your OH-SO-RARE win.

OSU does not have the horses to handle UGA for 4 quarters. We have to re-learn this stuff every year. Basically what the Cowboys and the press are saying is that OSU will beat UGA with one good offensive lineman, one good back and one good WR and the fact that Georgia is superior in every other category along with size depth, strength, overall talent means nothing. It must be Home field advantage that will beat Georgia because the dawgs have never played at LSU, Jacksonville,Tuscaloosa or Knoxville so it will be really tough to pull this one out. You people are day dreaming! We were going to beat Bama too weren’t we. Now listen up. If you read the press releases coming out of Ok you would know Ok St. has been having the toughest summer camp ever. Fist fights and “old time” hard drills every day. They have something to prove after there last game last year when they played like Ga did all year except the bowl game (soft). They are going to hit the Dawgs right in the mouth the ‘whole game’. Dawgs will not hold up. Their camp was very easy compared to Ok Sts. I love the Dawgs and it will hurt, but Ok St. by 10 or more. Also SC will beat the Dawgs also. Dawgs lose, but beat Boone’s spread. Close game early. OSU gets lead in 2nd QTR, and UGA coaches panic. Shuck off discipline for athleticism. All speed and size, but can’t get two to work together. Defense hampered by having LBs and DBs share one pair of unpulled hamstrings. 27-17. Dawg Nation holds blog townhall and demands mass resignation of coaching staff. Team hunkers down with stodgy strategy for USC and loses 16-13. Wins start coming in game 3.

If anyone has been reading about our camp, it has been one of the best in recent years. The “focus” has been there and we don’t have something to prove? If uga can get pressure early and succesfully run the ball the first two drives, OSU will CRUMBLE. They are a good team and im not doubting their ability. But now that the tailback duo of samuel (hard-nose downfield runner; anything but soft) and thomas (scatback with great vision) is set WATCH OUT! These dawgs may not win pretty with big scores, but they will be so refreshing from a competitive standpoint. The USC game is always close but therem is a reason for that; we ALWAYS warm up with a soft opponent. This year will be different and UGA gets its first lopsided victory over spurrier.

Danny

Boone Pickens was NOT referring to the actual score of the game as has been reported and taken out of context. Boone was referring to a House/Senate vote for something energy related.
Of course, the press idiots twist and turn words into articles that they hope will fire up the reader idiots who’ll buy their stupid papers.
Sure enough, many a UGA Dawg fan are eating it up.
Not one realistic Cowboy fan thinks that Georgia will be an easy game. That includes Boone Pickens. We’re better than we were two years ago in that game in Athens. Plus, we don’t have an ineffective Bobby Reid quarterbacking anymore. We have a much better leader in Zac Robinson and a much improved defense — something we lacked in Athens.
OSU fans know that UGA will always play tough. We’re counting on our home crowd to give us that extra momentum to overcome Georgia. We’re actually very concerned about Georgia — knowing full well that Richt and the Dawgs just reload and are very talented.
So put away your Boone Pickens score prediction. He really doesn’t believe that we’ll walk over Georgia.
..and windmills on the plains is a very brilliant idea that has many forward thinking people already onboard. There’s a reason Pickens has money and those that don’t believe in wind energy continue to live in small houses.

Danny – there is also a strong correlation between motivation and house size. Last year’s group of Dawgs was over-hyped, unfocused, and injury-riddled. This year’s underestimated team is very solid up front and very hungry to right the wrongs from last year. Regardless of how you twist it…Boone just threw the Dawgs a bone. Should be a fun game!

The grammer should be “than Arthur Blank and me do”. To put this properly, Mr. Bradley should have said He used to have more money than Arthur Blank and I do together. That was before his hedge fund went kaput.
Actually Boone gave much more than $165 million to the football program. More than $200 million . Before the fund went down the fund was up to about $420 million. After the crash Boone gave another $65 million in order for them to finish the stadium. He also gave the University an even $100 million for education.
I would say he gave them more money than he now has.
Incidentally, the predited score was intended as a joke . He was talking about an energy bill in the U. S. Congress that he supported and had passed 387 to 24. He then added that he hoped that was the score we beat Georgia.by. HA HA Ha.
Make no mistake, no one in Oklahoma is taking this game lightly. We are a little too much in awe of the Bulldogs, as a matter in fact. The fact t hat we are favored is a little puzzling to me. But here’s hoping.
