T. Boone’s line on UGA-OSU: Cowboys by 363 points

I’ve picked Georgia to lose to Oklahoma State by 10 points. T. Boone Pickens, who has more money than Arthur Blank and I put together, likes Georgia to lose by 363 points.

When I read T. Boone’s “predicted” score of 387-24 in a post by Terrance Harris on Fanhouse — thanks to observant reader Dink for the tip — my first thought was that the oil wildcatter has obviously been scouting Willie Martinez. But after reading Dave Sittler’s original column in the Tulsa World, I’m not sure this was an actual prediction. Sittler used the word “requested,” which is a bit different.

Example: I would like to request that Mr. Pickens give me 165 million bucks, but I’m not predicting he will.

T. Boone is 81. (He and the fourth Mrs. Pickens traveled to Athens in 2007 when OSU lost to the Bulldogs. Both Boone — his pals drop the “T” — and Madeleine spent some time in the press box. They seemed nice.) Three years ago the oilman gave the OSU athletics department $165 million. The refurbished edifice Georgia will enter on Sept. 5 is, you’ll be shocked to discover, named Boone Pickens Stadium.

TBP is already on record as believing his Cowboys will enter their regular season finale against Oklahoma unbeaten. Sittler quotes Pickens thusly: “I know I stuck my neck out in that Tulsa World column when I said we’re going to be 11-0. And I still believe that’s what we’re going to be, but it’s going to be tough getting there. We have to beat Georgia first if we’re going to be 11-0, so I think we’re going to win that game.

You’ll also be shocked to know I have some experience being on the wrong end of a projected blowout. I picked the Rams to beat the Patriots 42-3 in Super Bowl XXXVI, and the Patriots not only beat my 39-point spread but won the doggone game. So now I’m thinking T. Boone might have jinxed his ‘Boys. And, since I’ve also picked OSU, jinxed me.

Great, I say. Just great. Give a guy $3 billion and he thinks he owns the world.

(Oh, and here’s another column on T. Boone, this by Jenni Carlson of the Oklahoman. If her name rings a bell, there’s a reason. Her column provoked the infamous Mike Gundy rant, for which we should all be eternally grateful.)

JaxDawg: ““they still won’t be able to stop the triple wing T wishbone h-back option” or whatever GT’s running these days.” NICE

I guess the general assumption by most here is that UGA won’t be able to find their a$ses with both hands and a mirror, but OSU will be hitting on all cylinders. This will be the 1st game of the season for both teams. I expect a sloppy game with a lot of substitutions (as Stillwater will probably be 110 degrees). Dogs are slightly deeper and will win an ugly one based on depth.

FYI, OSU has one of the best O-Lines in the country … just saying.

The U.S. News & World Report college ratings are out today, and Georgia schools retained their rankings from last year for the most part.

I think the rankings influence where students go to college. (I also think many students are influenced by the “Colleges that Change Lives” franchise.)

Many people dismiss college status as a factor, but there’s evidence that where you go to school impacts how much you earn.

PayScale Inc., which compiles compensation data, says the median starting salary for Ivy League graduates is about 30 percent higher than that of liberal-arts college graduates. However, the study doesn’t address whether that pay differential is the result of a better education, or simply because the Ivies attract higher-achieving students in the first place. (I would also ask whether the Ivies attract better connected kids; it’s easier to end up at Goldman Sachs if your mother worked there.)

In its 2009 report, PayScale says the median starting salary for a University of Georgia graduate was $43,900, compared to $60,00 for a Harvard grad, $58,900 for a Georgia Tech grad, and $50,600 for an Emory grad.

I am sorry to report that PayScale also lists degrees that pay you back and teaching and journalism offer some of the lowest returns. The big money is in the STEM fields; science, technology, engineering and math.

T Boone knows oil, he don’t know football. Just because you control stuff don’t mean you know about football. Kinda like the government running healthcare. Efficient like the post office.

Mark Bradley, a fine writer…a very poor prognosticator.

This reminds me of UGA versus Tenn. in the 90s. We would have some nice, shiny skills players and new hope every year heading into the play the Vols…occasionally, we’d even fool the media into thinking we could win.

Of course, then Tenn. would come to town with bigger, faster, better athletes and methodically beat us down. Georgia is going to go into Stillwater and methodically handle OSU. 10-17 point win.

And it won’t be a big deal to anyone afterwards.

Don’t know about ya’ll, but I am having some SERIOUS UGA v. Hawaii Deja Vu on this game….

Hawaii’s offense was unstoppable. Their Quarterback was unstoppable, their recievers were unstoppable….I think the all knowing Gameday guys even predicted that Hawaii was going to win.

Here’s the problem. If we win….. The media is going to go ape s****, and rocket us up in the polls.
Which is why we were ranked #1…..we beat their “darling” in Hawaii, so obviously that means that we HAVE to be #1….because the folks in the media are never wrong.

How do we handle that – especially with the Evil one coming to town the next week? Could be trouble….i see an alabama beat down…….

If we lose….well…..batten down the hatches, and get ready to spend the holidays in sunny shreveport.

I’m not worried about the after affect of a win. This team NEEDS to win this game in a bad way. Cox gets confidence. His teammates get confidence in him.

Hey Jack,

You don’t know Schitt about English grammar. MB used the proper pronoun in stating, “Arthur Blank and I”….break the sentence into 2 separate sentences. Arthur has…I have. You wouldn’t say, “Me have”, unless you’re just ignorant.

Don’t feel badly, T. Boone probably doesn’t know the rule either, and it certainly hasn’t restricted his ability to function in society. He doesn’t appear to know diddley about football either.

The Dawgs will not “shock the world” if they win. Okie State is only ranked a few spots higher. I wouldn’t be surprised if a bunch of “experts” pick them to win based on the fact Okie State has no track record, got spanked last time, and UGA’s great road start record. Puppy fans quit acting so offended.

UGA’s speed on defense is going surprise them. I think Marcus Wahington will be the “IT” factor at DE in this first game especially. He is fast and maybe considered sort of a hybrid at that pos. ZacRob is a fine QB – but IMHO I think that our D-line is going to put a lot of stress on their running game… hopefully making them one dimensional… thus making them more predictable and more sackable. GA is going to disrupt their offense… and we are going to run the ball religiously… and annoy the crap out of them by converting third and short over and over and over and over again. I say it will be a close game until the 4th quarter when we go up by two TD’s – if we make good on the turnover opputunities that WILL present themselves early and often. Call it… GA 38 OkSt 24

The U.S. News & World Report college ratings are out today….

That publication was scolded by Stanford University Chancellor as being a poor view of what actually a university does to ensure high standards of integrity and academic success.

Besides the magazine is not going to criticize the very institutes their editors and writters came from.

Ranking are over rated unless your running the BCS….enough said.

yellow fuzz, since you’re a tech fan, I have a few math problems for you:

If a university were to offer 1 (ONE) free Coke and 2 (TWO) free hot dogs with every ticket purchased, how many Cokes and hot dogs will go unclaimed out when the university STILL can’t sell out their 55,000 seat Pop Warner stadium and sells only 40,000 tickets?

(55,000(1+2)) – (40,000(1+2)) = 45,000.

45,000 Cokes and hot dogs will go unclaimed by terrible Tech fans who can’t be bothered to come see their pathetic team play.

If a team wins 1 (ONE) game against another team in 8 (EIGHT) years, how many times did the other team win?

8 – 1 = 7.

The other team won 7 (SEVEN) times in 8 (EIGHT) years.

Follow up question: Which number is more, 7 (SEVEN) or 1 (ONE)?

Well, everywhere else but Bugtown, 7 (SEVEN) is always more than 1 (ONE). But in Bugtown, the immutable laws of mathematics must not be the same.

1. How you an continue to play on Thursday nights (you might even get on TV if Boise State is not playing).

2. How you might actually fill up the Division II stadium. Perhaps this year you can ACTUALLY average 38,000 each week (promotions, free give aways, free food).

3. How to look good in yellow.

4. How to keep the drive through clear while still stalking the UGA blog.

5. How to create a Tech blog that is of interest to anyone.
