We’re 17 days from kickoff, and already I know how The Only League That Matters will go. I know because I’ve applied the special Bradley brand of forecasting and come up with this detailed look at the SEC in 2009. Read it quickly, lest I run afoul of the league’s new media policy. (Section 3-a-iii: No writer can mention our school’s names without first slipping Verne Lundquist 10 bucks.)
1. Florida: I don’t know how Urban Meyer does it. Every other year he takes a bunch of no-names and wins the national championship. This year, however, he’ll fall just short. He’ll win the first 13 games and then lose No. 14. Regular season: 12-0. SEC title game: Beats LSU. BCS title game: Loses to Texas.
2. Georgia: Joe Cox will be better than Joe Tereshinski III but less good than D.J. Shockley. A loss in Stillwater on Sept. 5 will set the tone for a solid season by most standards but a middling one by Mark Richt’s. Regular season: 8-4, losses to Oklahoma State, LSU, Florida and Georgia Tech. Outback Bowl: Beats Michigan.
3. South Carolina: The Gamecocks will start 0-2, which will set off speculation that Steve Spurrier will quit after the season. They’ll get better thereafter, but not so much better that Spurrier decides to stick around in 2010. Regular season: 7-5, losses to N.C. State, Georgia, Alabama, Arkansas and Florida. Music City Bowl: Beats Miami.
4. Kentucky: Rich Brooks has taken the Wildcats to bowl games the past three seasons, and who said he was a lousy hire? (Actually, me.) This year Kentucky beats Tennessee for the first time since 1984. Regular season: 7-5, losses to Florida, Alabama, South Carolina, Auburn and Georgia. Liberty Bowl: Beats Southern Miss.
5. Vanderbilt: Every half-century the Commodores up and win a bowl game. Last year’s victory over Boston College in the Music City Bowl will have to suffice until, say, 2060. But Vandy will get a consolation prize: It’ll upset Georgia Tech. Regular season: 5-7, losses to Mississippi State, LSU, Ole Miss, Georgia, South Carolina, Florida and Kentucky.
6. Tennessee: Lane Kiffin is the new coach. He’s a humble sort of fellow. His humility will be tested. He’ll finish 4-8, one game worse than in the record that season saw Phillip Fulmer shoved out the door. But UT will win on Signing Day, which is all that counts. Regular season: 4-8, losses to UCLA, Florida, Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina, Ole Miss, Vanderbilt and Kentucky.
1. LSU: The best hire by any SEC school over the offseason — better than Chizik, better even than Kiffin — was the Tigers nabbing defensive coordinator John Chavis, who kept Tennessee afloat the past decade. He’ll put things right posthaste. Regular season: 11-1, loss to Florida. SEC title game: Loses to Florida. Capital One Bowl: Beats Penn State.
2. Alabama: The Tide got a bit ahead of itself last season by rising to No. 1 in the land, but it’ll be in the top five when LSU arrives in Tuscaloosa on Nov. 7. Then it’ll drop out. But there’s a national title coming soon. Regular season: 11-1, loss to LSU. Sugar Bowl: Loses to Oklahoma.
3. Arkansas: Hate him all you want, but Bobby Petrino can coach. And here’s where he gets it rolling and becomes the toast of the Ozarks. Then, being Bobby Petrino, he’ll leave to coach the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Regular season: 8-4, losses to Georgia, Alabama, Florida and LSU. Cotton Bowl: Beats Oklahoma State.
4. Ole Miss: The chic pick to win the West, but it won’t happen. The schedule sets up nicely — both LSU and Alabama come to Oxford — but the team isn’t quite that good. A Sept. 24 upset loss in Columbia will grease the chute. Regular season: 8-4, losses to South Carolina, Alabama, Arkansas and LSU. Chick-fil-A Bowl: Loses to Virginia Tech.
5. Auburn: Gene Chizik is the new Tiger coach, and I think I speak for everyone when I say, “Gene Chizik?” But give G-Chiz this: Alongside Lane Kiffin, he looks like Lombardi. And he does have that limo thing going for him. Regular season: 6-6, losses to Tennessee, Arkansas, LSU, Ole Miss, Georgia and Alabama. Independence Bowl: Loses to Missouri.
6. Mississippi State: Dan Mullen has a great pedigree, having coached alongside Urban Meyer. Dan Mullen now has a great impediment — he’s coaching the other Bulldogs. He seems a good hire. Then again, so did Sylvester Croom. Regular season: 4-8, losses to Auburn, LSU, Georgia Tech, Florida, Kentucky, Alabama, Arkansas and Ole Miss.
And now a word from Verne Lundquist: Actually, it’s still me. Due to my periodic bout of temporary insanity, I did not, in the first take of this post, have a winner in the Georgia-Arkansas, Tennessee-Florida or Tennessee-Auburn games. Actually, I had them in my mind, but I neglected to make them show up above. They’re here now — Georgia over Arkansas, which finishes 8-4; Florida over Tennessee, which finishes 4-8 and finishes sixth in the East, and Tennessee over Auburn, which finishes 6-6 but is still bowl-eligible.
Thanks to all those who pointed out the omissions/errors. I’m in your debt. And I am sorry. There’s no excuse for sloppiness. Except the usual one: That I’m a big fat idiot.

Come on Mark, two days ago you rip SI for missing obvious errors in their predictions, and then you post this tripe that full of glaring errors and omissions.
Here’s a tip for all of you pundits that like to put out predictions. Try actually getting out everybody’s schedules, looking at them, and then making predictions. And as you go along, make sure you cross reference the opponents schedules and marking them oppositely. Otherwise, you just make yourselves look dumb, and everybody that reads your predictions (rightfully) discounts everything you said.

LSU winning the West? They most of the DL and need to replace some in the secondary. The QB has one good game against an ACC defense. I don’t see it. I think they fight with Arkansas and Auburn for 3rd in the West.
Arknasas will be improved but the schedule is brutal. IMO they drop a game or 2 they shouldn’t due to schedule. Ole Miss and maybe Auburn beat Arkansas. Ark has Auburn and Florida before Ole Miss. Ole Miss has S. Car and Vandy. I hope Ark. has depth, they’ll need it.
Vandy beats Miss. St and goes to a bowl again.
Auburn is due for an upset against UGA and Auburn reminds me of UGA ‘06. If Auburn comes on late the UGA game will be interesting. Keep in mind the visiting team has better chances at the upset in the AU/UGA game.

Georgia will go 10 – 2 w/ losses to Arkansas and Tenn. A win in either one propels them to 11-1. They will play Alabama for the SEC championship. The black jerseys will prevail. Florida does not win the SEC nor the NC. Georgia does not lose to Tech. Florida looses to LSU and Georgia. You may think I am crazy but you heard it here first.

As others have said, not sure how Arky and UGA can both win that game in Fayetteville. I think it is stupid to make predictions like this but I guess if you are bored, it gives you something to do. As a UGA alum, I think the key to our season is the first game-if we can somehow when that game, I can see us winning 10 games. If we lose that one, I can see us losing 4-5 games. The first month of the schedule is brutal with decent to good teams and a lot of long travel dates-Okie State and Arky-wow. But, if we can go 3-1 or 4-0 to start the season, WATCH OUT.

Is a victory over Florida and a national championship in the cards for the ‘09 Dogs?
Currently, the Southeastern Conference (SEC), in my opinion, is the greatest football conference in the nation. That being said, I know that making it through an entire season with an unblemished record is highly unlikely in the SEC, if not impossible! I’m also well aware that our ‘09 non-conference opponents are very good teams (with the exception of Tennessee Tech). Believe me, I’m a realistic individual and a student of the game. And if I were a betting man, I would put all my money on the Gators to beat Georgia this year. However, the reason that I’m not a betting man is that I might possibly lose all my money if I did something that stupid. Because the truth is (under Coach Richt), Georgia is as well coached and is as talented as the Gators. Prior to last year’s lopsided 49-10 loss to Florida, Coach Richt and his Dogs’ previous five losses were by a combined average of seven points. Georgia lost by 14 in ‘01, by 7 in ‘02, by 3 in ‘03, by 4 in ‘05, and by 7 in ‘06. Granted losses are losses, but my point is that if the Dogs had just one more turnover, one more call go their way, or had one more score in any of those games; we’d be singing the praises of Coach Richt and would have likely already celebrated a national championship in 2002.
Anyway, Georgia very well could beat Florida and if the cards fall just right they could find themselves in the national title game in Pasadena at seasons end. After all, to quote Coach Richt, “When you bang around at the top, you eventually get to the top.”
By the way, if Georgia does beat Florida this year, the series will be tied 3-3 since 2004.

Switch UGA and Arkiesaw and add one or two more “W”’s to UGA and you will have it right.
SC loses its first 2 and finishes 7-5? NOPE 5-7 and the ole obnoxious one goes golfing permanently. Couldn’t happen to a nicer guy. 2009 is going to be a special year for ole stevie.
1.) Starts out the year being the only coach to not place TT on the 1st team all SEC team. no problem except for the fact that ole stevie went to school there!!!
2.) Gets blitzkrieged at NCSU on national TV.
3.) Gets shutout for the 2nd time in 4 years against UGA in another televised embarrassment.
4.) Struggles to beat Florida Atlantic
5.) Loses to UK for the first time ever.
6.) Gives up 6 TD’s to TT and fires the guy who filled out the all SEC ballot incorrectly.
7.) Resigns after going 4-8 as the SC students hurl insults his way outside as he walks away.
He then realizes that KARMA is something else and vows never to treat people badly ever again. Just so some good can come from it.

Georgia Beats Oklahoma State!
Zach Robinson, Dez Bryant, and Kendall Hunter are great ball players, but this game will be decided in the trenches and on the defensive side of the ball. In the aforementioned areas, Georgia has the advantage. Prediction: UGA 30 OSU 20
I’m excited about this year’s group of Bulldogs and can’t wait to see how they perform on the field. I truly believe they’re going to surprise a lot of people this season. This team is stacked and no one in the nation knows yet that Coach Richt is sitting on a virtual gold mine of talent. However, after his Dogs destroy Oklahoma State in Stillwater, the cat (or the DAWG) will be out of the bag!

Monte Kiffin will keep the UT defense sound, if not better, and the Vols finish a respectable (comparatively speaking) 8-4. Dawgfan@ 9:12— no complaints here from an LSU fan. That’s how the bowl system works. The loser of the SECCG game usually goes to the Capital One Bowl with the #3 or 4 team from the SEC jumping up to the Sugar Bowl. It didn’t happen last year because Bama was a clear cut #2 in the SEC (and the Media loves them). But it has happened before to LSU. Actually, LSU lost to UGA and got sent here to the Peach Bowl in 2005. I’m sure Miami remembers that game!! No biggie, plus, there just some joes predictions.

I can see Tenn. beating Vandy but I think they get swept by Bama, UF, Ole Miss and UGA. Auburn is a question mark.
I didn’t see SOS being on the hot seat but after looking at the schedule if he does not start 2-0 he could very well be gone after this season. However, who does S. Car get to take over? They have facilities but no recruiting base and no iconic history.

The media’s love affair with Oklahoma State tells me a lot of them have never heard the axiom that it is defense that wins games and championships…at any level.
Oklahoma State has excellent offensive stats, but they are putting up those numbers in the Big 12. Even more important, nobody is saying their defense is very good. They give up almost 100 yards a game more than the Martinez led offense at Georgia. Mark, you are a big time Martinez basher, but you give Oklahoma State a pass on that? HMMM….
Oklahoma State has a glaring weakness on defense. Their pass defense has been terrible and this year they have to replace everybody but Perrish Cox in the secondary and both tackles. I believe we will do very well against them.

c. no way south carolina wins 7 games
d. no way ole siss winds up lower than 3rd in their division, and i’d pick them 2nd.
e. as for UT you can’t win on signing day unless you win during the season. and just because you sign some blue chippers doesn’t mean you’ll be a good team. with kiffin at the helm they’ll always underachieve because he’s never done anything of significance as a coach.

Hmm, you have Arkasas going 9-3, losing to LSU, Bama, and UF. Yet you have UGA down as beating Arkansas. Well that wont add up.
However! Replace UGA losing to Okie St with Arkansas (which is actually quite possible) than your predictions will look a little bit better. Don’t buy the cowboy hype…it’s just that. Arkansas’s schedule set’s up to beat the Dawgs. UGA starts off hard all the way to Ark. Ark has been planing for UGA all summer, it’s their first tough game.

Oregon and Colorado held Okie St to 31 or less. If the game was played on week 3 UGA wins easy. However it isn’t. Okie St returns playmakers, most of the OL, and will be opening a brand new stadium expansion. In short they will be pumped and know how to play with each other.
UGA has to start fast and can not afford any early season mistakes. UGA has the talent to win it just depends on how together the team is coming out of camp. CMR’s best seasons have started with a tough opener. Lets hope the trend continues.

Ok I’m done bashing now.
I agree that the Dawgs will possibly lose 4 games. LSU, UF are pretty sure L’s. We lose two more between OK st., USC, Aub., UT. I think Martinez should stay UNLESS we have a couple more games like UF and Bama from last year. Big lapses on the defense like we saw in those games are usually because of being out coached by the other team and unprepared. What happened in the Tech game last season was poor execution and missed tackles, not Willies fault. I can live with that.

You are wrong again. Chavis was only relevant when David Cutcliff was at Tenn. What a joke he and his prevent defense were the last decade. He was awsome last year at UCLA against a 3rd string QB. It’s hard for any SEC team to go undefeated. Florida has never done it and I don’t see them doing it this year. Everybody in the media seems to be picking UGA to go 8-4. Tenn beating Auburn. Tenn has no QB or WR. Monte presents an advantage due to his NFL scheme? Try telling that to a ND fan after Weiss. USC was not sad to see Lane go as he followed on what Norm Chow built and then lost to UCLA.
Auburn has Chizik who has not looked great as a HC but he was at Iowa (coaching graveyard) State. He was a good DC. Gus has been a good college OC. At this time I give the advantage to Auburn.
Auburn’s OL is thin which may cost them the game against Tenn. If I had to wager money at this time it would be on Auburn.

Not sure why everyone thinks LSU is the allmighty and is guaranteed to beat UGA. We’re finally healthy on defense and our O line is the best in the country which will nuetralize LSU up front. Just like last year LSU is going to struggle on offense. Remember folks we blew LSU out on the road at night!! And we’ll do it again this year between the hegdes. Dawgs lose to FLA and maybe at OK St. Another 10 or 11 win season for the Dawgs in a re-building year. Next year is the year we get over the hump. Yeah Otto they let the rocket scientist walk and hired a cave man(although he could recruit and I thought Kiffin was smart in hiring him). I thought Ole Miss had made, what would arguably be, one of the biggest blunders in college football letting Cutcliff go and they would never hire a coach that good again. Well lightning does strike twice and they lucked up with Rev Nutt. I don’t think they’ll put any restrictions on Nutt’s hiring and firing of his coaches.

If LSU plays UF for the SEC title and loses. UF, according to you, is off to play TExas for the NC. So, LSU not Bama will play in the sugar.
As before, I say the dawgs will not lose to all three OSU, LSU, and UF, and the dawgs will absolutely not lose to Tech. So, your 8-4 is not going to float unless the dawgs take one of the others too lightly. I am thinking by the end of the season next year, Auburn might just be better than a lot of folks think.
If you are all warm and fuzzy about LSU’s D-coordinator, what about UT’s. Kiffin’s Old Man may whip those guys into shape and save a few games while they figure out who the QB may be.
If UF goes undefeated, they are going to take out Texas or whoever else may show up. I don’t look for any wins against the Gators by attrition or law of averages. The only way the gators lose this year is if they get careless and the other team plays flawless. I don’t see their D gettting careless, and I don’t see Tebow letting the offense get careless.
You overestimate LSU, GT, Texas, and, like everyone else, OSU and Ole MIss. You underestimate Georgia and possibly, like everyone else Tennessee and Auburn.

I guess I don’t understand the poll question. To me, “least inspired” means a prediction that any one would be able to make. LSU first in the West seems so obvious as to not be inspired at all. Sure, UGA losing 4 seems like a fairly safe prediction, but the dawgs could go 9-3 or 10-2 or 7-5, etc. LSU winning the West seems a surer thing than UGA going 8-4. Wouldn’t that make the LSU prediction less inspired? Help me understand why only 7% picked that one and 44% picked the UGA prediction. I’m assuming 44% actually agree with Mark’s prediction for the dawgs.
Help me understand this!

John – If you think the Gators are a joke, I assume you mean they are one of the worst teams in college football. Based upon that, I wonder why you would bother to comment on college football at all. Wouldn’t it make more sense to comment on a subject you know something about? Please understand that I’m the guy who obviously can’t figure out the poll question, so it may be me that knows nothing about college football – not you.
That said, I’m curious as to which college team you pull for. I assume you think your team could certainly beat a team you consider to be a”joke.” Or do you pull for a team that is worse than a “joke?” If so, why? Just wondering.

He can waltz for 9 to 11 wins, but can not motivate team for an (remember-he is the coach that redshirted knowshon Moreno) entire year like Urban Meyer, Les Miles, Nick Saban, ect… Houston Nutt, best game day coach in football… Ten will make a statment, I like the new coach…. Like a young spurrier.. I take Ole Miss and Fla in the sec… Hope Tebow wins the His-man… The bottom line for the dawgs they would rather be ranked 15 with no No 1 distractions than be ranked preseason No 1 and have all the attention, this was said directly out of Mark Richt mouth… This is why UGA will never win a BCS under Mark Richt…. Isn’t the game won in the trenches?? You really think we’ll lose to the bugs again if we’re healthy? Come on man, I’ll give you a Mulligan and take this one back.

Hey WonderIf…are you a complete idiot or do you just play one ‘on-line’? What ‘weak’ was that about Willie? Next ‘weak’, last ‘weak’ or ‘weak’ after next? Florida, like Georgia and virtually every other team ranked #1 pre-season will find that ending up #1 doesn’t happen very much – like maybe three times in the last 20 years. So call it distractions or whatever, it happens. As for being ranked #15 pre-season, that’s pretty close to where we were (actually 16) in 1980 – so it’s not a bad starting point…Richt can’t motivate enough to ever win it all? Pretty pathetic given that you’re also predicting that Johnson ‘will’ win it all at Tech. Don’t know how much you have, but I’d be willing to wager everything I’ve got against it that that never happens (and we won’t have to ‘wait’ long to see since he’ll be gone after three or four seasons). Johnson and Tech winning the NC may be the lamest comment you made in the entire post…unless it was Houston Nutt being the best ‘game-day’ coach in football, or Lame Kiffin was the next Spurrier – admit he’s got the mouth, but at least Spurrier had some ‘creds’ on his record that supported such an ego – Heismann, ACC Championship at Duke, wins at Florida before he started shooting his mouth off…that kind of thing.

Chazzo, you’d think that would be the way it works: SEC title game loses goes to the Sugar. But it doesn’t always. I think the Sugar would take 11-1 Alabama over 11-2 LSU. LSU and Bama both going 11-1? That’s hard to see. Both could have good seasons but 11-1 is hard to see for one of them let alone both of them.
LSU has 2 brutal games against the sec east when they travel to Athens for UGA and also against the gators. That’s 2 probable losses right there. Then they play Ole Miss on the road, Bama on the road, and they still have Ark, Auburn, etc. They could well end up being better than Bama and Ole Miss and still not win the west due solely to how tough their schedule is.
I can’t believe you discounted Ole Miss so much. To me they have the easiest path to the division. Just like Bama they avoid UGA and UF in the east but they also get both LSU and Bama at home. Their single issue is depth but if they can avoid the injury bug they can run the table. Hard to believe that this is the only team that beat UF last year and they did it in the swamp, they destroyed teams down the stretch last season, they’re settled in after a year under Nutt, and people like you are still dismissing them. And on top of all that you’re not even picking them 2nd or 3rd but 4th behind Ark?
And UT going 4-8? On talent alone they should more games even in a transition year.

Mark,
You have a point there about Nutt’s teams being better when they are underdogs and the question about whether or not Ole Miss can handle such expectations.
However, history shows that good coaches usually have really good years in their 2nd year. That first year is usually just a transition year. Just some quick examples but Saban took Bama from 6-6 to 12-0 his 2nd season, Jim Tressel and Bob Stoops both went from 7-5 in their initial years to 12-0 and national titles in their 2nd year. You can look at countless other coaches and you will generally see that most successful coaches did dramatically better in their 2nd year after that initial 1st trasition year. Urban Meyer would be yet another example going from 9-4 his first year to 13-1 and a national title in his 2nd year.
Now I’m not saying Ole Miss is due a national title. I’m just saying that if the pattern holds that his 2nd team should be dramatically better than his 1st team.

Also, you make it sound like it is KIFFIN’s COACHING that will make this year’s Tennessee team play WORSE. They have a TOP NOTCH coaching staff in place, so you have got to be crazy. A complacent Tennessee program won 5 games last year (and it could have EASILY been 8 games). You are going to tell me that Kiffin can’t come in with his star-studded coaching staff and get more out of his players? Did he not recruit any good freshmen? You have to remember, this isn’t FULMER anymore. Kiffin will play the best players. Maybe if you read any articles about the Vols players this year and heard how much they are behind Kiffin and how they have NEVER WORKED HARDER in their lives. They were complacent under Fulmer.
But, I guess that doesn’t fit into the equation. Kiffin “can’t coach” because he has run his mouth? Or is it that he’s just an easy target? Why don’t you try something original other than blasting Kiffin. Seriously.
WHY DON’T YOU TALK ABOUT HOW MARK RICHT IS THE NEXT FULMER? How he has so much talent but can’t maximize it on the field? Or what about how Les Miles should be on the hot seat?
Or what about how Ole Miss is playing with Ed Orgeron’s players?
Please come up with something ORIGINAL Mr. Bradley. Don’t be “complacent” and go the easy way out.

I agree GA will not be the major power they have been over the past few years, but losing to a Big 12 team in OSU which is maybe the 4th or 5th best team in the big 12 is a stretch. Everyone knows there is no defense in the Big 12 and we all saw last year what happens when an unstoppable Big 12 offense (texas tech) faces a mediocre SEC team (ole miss).
As for the rest of your predictions. Well, they are way off as well. I mean Arkansas ahead of Ole Miss, please. the only 2 things you got right were LSU and Florida winning their respective divisions.

we laugh at UF fans for saying they are 16-3 in the past 19 games and dodge the entire history, and then we say we are 3-3 if we win this year and dodge the previous 19. That is some funny stuff right there.
Regardless, ALL I care about is the PAST year and they have us there. Hopefully, we can change that this year

Nutt still coaches Ole Miss… UK is still a basketball school… USCe is still, well, USCe… and UT isn’t going to lose 8 ball games.
The Vol cupboard, especially on D, isn’t nearly as bare as most seem to think. If you take the HC’s out of the equation (and this isn’t a shot at Lane Kiffin just comparing apples to apples), UT has the best staff resume in the SEC.
Your article has been duly saved.

Wonderif seems to think that Stafford did poorly at UGA. Look at the stats, man. As far as the lions, veteran team mates recently bragged how well coached he was and were impressed with the skills he brought with him from UGA. As for your list of coaches, not a single one of them, not even Urban Meyer, wins ten games with that amount of season ending injuries and the schedule UGA played in ‘08 with a bunch of freshmen on the O-line to boot.
I have given the 2008 D a hard time, but if you look at the stats in UGAs losses, it didn’t have a lot to do with game plans. It had everything to do with player execution. I know that that goes back to coaching, but it is also symptomatic of inexperienced and banged up players.
Four of five losses is not inconceivable, but your argument about UGAs coaching doesn’t hold much water.
Personally I’m sticking with at least nine wins, probably ten, but the 11 wins is conceivable, 12 possible with a couple of miracles.
PS I hear that we may get to find out how UF will do with a depleted O-line. Could be interesting. Strong is a great D-co, probably the best. UFs D will keep them winning with Tebow and Meyer getting all the credit.

My Take
August 19th, 2009
9:14 pm
Mark,
I hate Tennessee, but the Vols are not going 4-8! They went 5-7 last season, and that was due to a lot of things behind the scenes. Tennessee’s defense is not bad, but their offense had no indentity last year. I think Tennessee’s home schedule is very winnable. I can see them finishing 8-4 or 9-3. I also think Auburn will be better than folks think. That game in Athens late in the season has me worried! You can throw out the records when UGA and Auburn play! I remember 10 years ago when Auburn finished like 4-7 or 5-6 and whooped UGA in Athens. Crazy things can happen in the SEC, and the talent level is high across the board. You never know what team will turn it on from week to week.

Mark, You have Auburn going 6-6 including wins over WVU and UK. That won’t happen. I agree on UT, it will be ugly. UF will will east, Alabama wins west, but doesn’t have enough offense to beat UF. My upset special of the year will be UK going 8-4.

Bradley is way off his rocker with UT. UT finishes no less than 8-4 regular season and beats GA in Knoxville. They start the season 2-0 going into the Swamp and then surprises everyone with how close they play UF. UG will be the only team in the east division to beat UT this year.

Mark, you’re picks are not bad, but pretty shy with the upsets. Okay, Ole Miss doesn’t live up to expectations, but who in these parts really thinks they could? Vandy beats Tech and UT falls dead flat in Kiffin’s first year … okay, that’s bolder, and I hope you’re right. But if there were going to be a major upset this season, something in the neighborhood of Ole Miss over Florida last year, or Auburn over Florida and Arkansas over LSU a couple seasons ago, where would you place your chips on that happening? Or will this be a season without surprises?

You hit the nail on the head, although I’d like to add that you can apply that logic to most members of the media. The AJC forgets that UGA is only 2 years removed from being shafted out of the National Title game( yeah they didn’t win their conference, but we all know that UGA and USC were clearly the 2 best teams in the country and neither got to play for the title). But the media is notoriously shortsighted. They can say what they want and never be held accountable for when they are wrong, which is quite often. 2007 might as well have been 10 years ago.

Mark – I don’t know why you and the rest of the media are so hung up on Spurrier calling it quits. He has said numerous times that he isn’t going anywhere. This team is very young, so he’s not going to hang it up over a 7-5 finish with arguably the toughest schedule in the nation. I don’t have high expectations for this season because there are tons of ? marks surrounding the team. I still think we find a way to beat NC State. I also wouldn’t be shocked to see this team upset UGA in Athens. Dawg fans – you barely got out of Columbia last season with a “W”, so don’t think Cox is going to lead the dawgs to a blowout win in week 2.

Dear John,
I distinctly called the 1981 victory over Tennessee Kentucky’s next-to-last in the series. That means not the most recent one but the second-most-recent. The 1984 game was Kentucky’s last victory over Tennessee, and it was when Tony Robinson threw the ball out of bounds on the final play of the game. The 1981 game was Fran Curci’s farewell as UK’s coach.

Mark:
Not much to quibble about regarding your SEC picks. Saying this, let’s take a look at UGA.
Of the four games you think UGA will lose, I think it will be three of the four with UGA beating either tech or Okie State. More likely Okie. Of the eight games you think UGA will win, they will mostly likely win seven. So……that adds up to 8-4 doesn’t it? Just a different type of 8-4.
I think the media sees a superior Okie quarterback and a receiver that is thought to be superior to most (but in fact is about equal to UGA’s splendid sophomore receiver) and see a better ball club.
I see:
1. a far superior UGA coaching staff 2. of the 22 starters, I would guess UGA has an edge in 14-15 positions. 3. Beyond the 22 starters, say players 23-50, it is much less competitive with UGA holding a commanding edge.
If you have ever attended an Okie State home game, even in the last year or two, you know the crowd is not much of a factor – kind of the “UGA of the Big Twelve” type crowd. I will say the ballyard is pretty fancy but you could put two of Okie’s ballyards inside Sanford Stadium.
The heat and humidity of Stillwater will hardly be a factor.
In all honesty, when Okie State came to Athens, I was pretty surprised that the ball club was only marginally competitive and, if Coach Richt had not called off the Dawgs early in the third quarter, I think UGA would have doubled the score. This is a better Okie State ball club that the one that came to Athens but not good enough to beat UGA.
Let’s all agree to meet back here on September 6th and see how UGA did.

I quickly know whether or not a “sports writer” has done any research on South Carolina. This guy obviously hasnt. How can you pick them out? The only thing that say is “this could be Spurrier’s last year.” Come on the same boneheads have been saying it for 3 years…….it is not going to happen. He publicly said that he wants nothing more than to coach this new freshman class until they graduate….seems like simple math 4-5 years more of spurrier.
Cant really argue the loses that he selected. To be honest SC could lose every game but one (SC State)…not likely…but you could make a serious arguement for each game. My 2 cents.
