As rallying cries go, this one is a bit weird: “We’re better off now because nobody thinks we’re the best team in the country.” But this is college football, where anything is grist for the motivational mill.
A year ago the Georgia Bulldogs found themselves ranked No. 1, and they didn’t like the way that turned out. So now they’ve decided it’s better not to have drawn a single vote to finish first in the SEC East. (Florida was a unanimous choice at the conference’s Media Days.) It’s better being considered not nearly as good.
Mark Richt told the Greater Atlanta Bulldog Club last month that he feels he “has a lot more juice” going into this season. Last year, he recalled, he’d gone on a mission trip and had returned to face a barrage of questions on two fronts – the number of off-field incidents involving Georgia players, which hasn’t been an issue this time, and being the first team in school history ranked preseason No. 1, which isn’t an issue, either.
And there is a compelling recent precedent. In 2005 the Bulldogs were picked to finish third in the East for what seemed good reason: They’d lost their longtime starting quarterback. Indeed, that’s what some players chanted during the celebration on the floor of the Georgia Dome after they’d beaten LSU for the 2005 league title: “Third in the East … third in the East …”
We don’t yet know if Joe Cox can do as D.J. Shockley did four years ago – steer his team to a championship after waiting his turn – but the parallel alone gives the Bulldogs hope. So does the return of two anchors from injury: Trinton Sturdivant, the sturdy left tackle, and Jeff Owens, the forceful defensive tackle.
Georgia’s hope this season is to be strong where it was weak in 2008 – up front. Nobody is suggesting Matthew Stafford and Knowshon Moreno won’t be missed, but the Bulldogs should never lack for talent at the skill positions. Cox doesn’t have Stafford’s arm and Caleb King lacks Moreno’s wiggle, but these are still SEC-caliber players.
That said, this will mark only the fourth time in Richt’s tenure at Georgia, which is entering its ninth season, the Bulldogs have approached a season with an untested No. 1 quarterback. In 2001, David Greene’s first season as starter, they finished 8-4. In 2006, the season that began with Joe Tereshinski III as No. 1 and saw Cox start at Ole Miss and finished with Stafford in control, they were 9-4.
Put another way, the two worst seasons under Richt – not to say that a four-loss campaign is “bad” – have come when the No. 1 quarterback was a relative newbie. The belief here is that 2009 will be a similarly lesser year, that four losses will again be the result, that this will be more like 2006 than 2005.
Then again, I was among those who believed Georgia would be the best team in the land in 2008. So I’m already one of the prime motivators. Glad to be of service, guys.
Sept. 5, Oklahoma State at Stillwater: Some Bulldog fans see OSU as another Arizona State. Different league, folks. OSU 30, Georgia 20.
Sept. 12, South Carolina at Athens: The Evil Genius marred 2007 season by winning at Sanford Stadium. Not this time. Georgia 24, South Carolina 14.
Sept. 19, Arkansas at Fayetteville, Ark.: Tempting to go with the Hogs, but the Richt road mojo will carry the day. Georgia 21, Arkansas 20.
Sept. 26, Arizona State at Athens: OK, here’s the real Arizona State, and here’s the first easy win of 2009. Georgia 31, Arizona State 10.
Oct. 3, LSU at Athens: Big-time opponent enters big-time environment and leaves with big-time victory. LSU 24, Georgia 23.
Oct. 10, Tennessee at Knoxville: Any letdown potential after LSU will be overridden by the Kiffin Factor. Georgia 24, Tennessee 13.
Oct. 17, Vanderbilt at Nashville: Another road game in the Volunteer State, this one tougher. But still a Georgia “W.” Georgia 27, Vanderbilt 20.
Oct. 31, Florida at Jacksonville: Strange things happen on Halloween, don’t they? Nothing this strange, I fear. Florida 30, Georgia 17.
Nov. 7, Tennessee Tech at Athens: Don’t look now, but Georgia’s sixth victory will be its third in a row over a team from Tennessee. Georgia 42, Tennessee Tech 10.
Nov. 14, Auburn at Athens: Yes, the road team tends to win in this strange series. But not when Gene Chizik coaches the road team. Georgia 24, Auburn 14.
Nov. 21, Kentucky at Athens: Three in a row for the surging Bulldogs, setting the stage for the big game in Atlanta. Georgia 33, Kentucky 17.
Nov. 28, Georgia Tech at Atlanta: Willie Martinez has had a year to figure out Paul Johnson’s offense. He’ll need another. Georgia Tech 30, Georgia 24.

UGA has senior WR Moore who lit up Michigan State in last years bowl game. He is very comfortable in the offense and has loads of experience, so we don’t need to rely only on freshmen WRs to take the double off of AJ Green. I also expect us to rely more on TEs this year which may also draw attention away from AJ Green.
Someone asked early about Bradley’s team.
He is from Kentucky and pulls for the Wildcats in basketball, so I would venture to say he leans toward them in football too.

Mark, thanks for the compliment to comedyclown. Yeah, real good logic there where he/she mentions the points scored against the UF defense. Heck, OK State scored 41 (yes, forty one) points on Oklahoma while UF scored how many? So OK State should whip the tar out of UF…right? Now please go work on your next brilliant piece, Ms. Bradley. You are now deemed a notch below Terrence Moore in my opinion. You’re no dawg but perhaps your mom was……get it?

Here’s my thinking, such as it might be: Georgia lost three games — two at home — last season with two of the top dozen players drafted by the NFL. Is it so outrageous to think the Bulldogs might lose four with those two? Guess so.

Mark, I see….logic is definitely lacking here…..I should just “believe” and “dream” more I guess. I’d fit in then..
Jealous, you are assuming that I am a Florida fan and even if I am, I didn’t choose the colors for the school and don’t wear jorts, although I must admit that I do like the new camaros.
Ktown, having one good game doesn’t mean that he will have a great YEAR. he has had 2, 3, and 29 catches in his three seasons. He had 11 in two games last year which means in his other 11 games, he had 18(not even 2 a game)….go ahead though, count on that.
smitty, thanks…I am not here to argue, just debate and talk some football.
insane, your problem is that you base what a team/player will do based on ONE game. I don’t think anyone is questioning what UF will be this year topic. Try to stick to the topic….and you last joke or whatever you call it was really weak.

Mark,
While we did lose 3 games with two top 12 NFL draft picks, we also won alot of games without top 12 draft picks (see David Greene, DJ Shockley, Musa Smith, Thomas Brown, etc). Much like the dawg team from 2005, I think a great team will make it’s own way. And at the end of the day all you can do is win the games you play regardless of whos wearing the uniforms.

Your point is well taken, K-Town. But let me also note the 2005 team didn’t open on the road, didn’t play LSU, got Florida in Year 1 under Urban Meyer — I know, D.J. Shockley didn’t play in the game — and got Tech in Year 3 under Reggie Ball. But you’re right when you say, “A great team will make its own way.”

Jealous…schedule smack is weak. Every team in the sec has tough years and years where the schedule sets up nice for them. UF, in 06 and 08, had a top 3 SOS in the nation so they have proved they can do it with a tough schedule. Don’t think that UGA knew that OSU was going to be good when this game was scheduled and GT is good every now and then. UF plays Miami just as much as UGA plays a good ooc team and FSU is better than GT more than not. So, save your scedule smack because again, everyteam in the sec plays cupcakes and everyone plays tough games from time to time.

My point is he is coming into his own. He can’t catch balls if he’s on the bench behind MoMass, Reggie Brown, Fred Gibson, etc. All of whom are now playing on Sundays. Additionally he doesn’t need to have a GREAT year, he just needs to make his catches while he is on the field because the other WRs will get playing time too. I would imagine his leadership and knowledge of the system will aide the development of the freshmen WRs tremendously.

Harvin missing 3 games does not tell the whole story..one game is no indicator of a season,I saw the Gators play last year and I don’t see them being as good on Offense this season…comedy maybe you can point out the players you assume will pick up the slack. As for the Defense when your offense moves the chains, have long drives, put up points and give you good field position to work with you can be more aggressive. But let’s not get carried away with the Defense stuff.AUB is an example of good D is not enough.FLA is good but they have issues like everybody else. The last thing I will say about last year’s losses is this.Against ALA,FLA and GT… we were missing too many of our best players..O8 TOP 5 1.Moreno 2.Stafford 3.Owens 4.Ellerbe 5.Sturdivant ..Battle and Washington were in my top10.I’d like to know which of those teams you really believe would win those games with 3out of their top 5 ..or 5 out of their top 10 players out.Seriously… name one.

Hey JEALOUS OF UGA…first, you called me full of myself, assanine, and stupid in your post. I am glad you aren’t so full of yourself, assanine, or stupid (and I heard stupid hurts). Second, what does how you are ranked in high school have to do with how a kid performs in his 3rd year (redshirted one year) in college? Tell me, please. Third, you DON’T have three kids on your roster that were rated higher than Brantley. You have one and his name in Murray…5 star, 3rd best QB in his class. Brantley was a 4-star and the 7th best rated QB. Mettenberger was a 4 star and the 14th best QB. Logan Gray was a 4 atar and was te 12th best QB. And Joe Cox was a 4-star and the 22nd best QB in his class. You better check your data before making such ass…. statements (unless you are talking about QBs the don’t play for Georgia anymore and why would you do that???). Finally, if you don’t believe what I am saying about John Brantly, maybe you would believe what the head coach and offensive coodinator at Florida are saying. They are better judges of talent that either you or me. Just go to http://www.gatorsports.com or the Orlando Sentinal website (use Google is you know how) and read about the terrible back up QB on the Florida roster. And I didn’t say Florida would not lose anything if Tebow went down. Of course they would. He is a Heisman Trophy winner, dude and he has 3 years of playing experience. But Brantley has playing experience and the full support of the Gator coaching staff “as the next great college QB at the University of Florida.” I didn’t say that, the Florida coaches are saying that. So get over yourself and do some reading and some research and stop throwing out insults and your emotions so much. You might start thinking in a clear fashion if you do. And, by the way, I believe I stated in an earlier post what a great QB I think Murray is going to be for Georgia in the future. But right now, their would be a much greater drop off in QB play is Cox went down and Murray came in than if Tebow went down and Brantley came in…believe me…or don’t. I really don’t care. But it is the truth.

The dawgs maybe be happy with a four loss season after this season, which I believe will go one of two way’s. A Tommy Tuberville landslide season or a two to three loss season. 7-5, with Richt having to answer a lot of questions, followed-up by another 8-4 season, with Richt on the hot seat. I love the dogs, but I believe this ship is about to sink. Hope the great coach can pull a miracle out this year, we have the talent, but we are about 2 years away from putting it together again.

SOUTHGEORGIADAWG88…this year’s Gator offense just might be better than any offense that has played at Florida. It certaily will be more balanced than the last two years. Florida is absolutely loaded with rugged (great blockers), experienced, and talented WRs in Sr. Riley Cooper (4.3 40 time and 6′3″), Soph. Deonte Thompson (4.3 slot receiver at 6′0″), Sr. Carl Moore (4.5 and 6′4), Soph. Jeff Demps (4.2 or better sometimes and taking Harvin’s spot at 5′8″), Sr. David Nelson (4.5 and 6′6″). Then they will add the following freshman to the mix: Andre Dubose (4.2 and will also play a lot in Harvin’s old position and the best WR coming out of HS last year and tearing it up in practice so far). Then the following redshirt freshman: Frankie Hammond 5′10, lightening quick and great hands at backup slot receiver. You also have Aaron Hernandez at TE. Then you have Chris Rainey (4.2) and Emmanual Moody (4.4) alternating at running back, backed up by a very talented freshman in Mike Gillesie and also Demps and Dubose getting carries. Then you have the Pouncey twins, Carl Johnson, Matt Patchen, and others on the OL that are very talented. No, I am afraid the drop off in offense this year will not be happening in Gatortown.

SOUTHGEORGIADAWG…the Gators would not have won the NC without Spikes at MLB and Tebow at QB. Or the Pouncey twins and Carl Johnson on the OL. The OU game would have been closer without Harvin, but the Gators still would have won the game. The other necessary players from last year were Joe Haden and Janoris Jenkins at the CB positions. They made a hudge difference on the defense as well. Major Wright was a “major” contributor at FS as well. Riley Cooper was very good at WR, especially at blocking on runs and catching crital passes (and was why everyone was so relieved when he did not leave for the Texas Rangers this year to play baseball. He was a difference maker, big time at WR. And Aaron Hernandez was a major key as well. Jeff Demps opened up the field for all the other players with his speed at RB. So, guess the answer to your question would be these players, in order:
Riley Cooper
1) Tim Tebow
2) Brandon Spikes
3) Percey Harvin
4) Mau.Pouncey at center
5) Mike Pouncey and/or Carl Johnson at guard
6 and 7) Joe Haden and Janoris Jenkins combination at CB
9) Carl Johnson
10) Aaron Hernandez and Jeff Demps
That was sort of 10, but narrowing it down to 10 was hard. Does that answer your question???

Insane, again you make no sense. I said nobody is questioning Florida because nobody with a brain thinks they will be anything but very good and i was addressing someone so I am just addressing the many topics being discussed on this one blog. Try and keep up.
Mark, I think you misunderstood my post or I misspoke. That isn’t what I was asking.
88, I am not saying that 3 games will tell the whole story, but it is the only 3 he missed and the offense didn’t miss a beat in 2 of them and against Bama still managed to put up 31 and missed a chipshot FG. Who will replace him? Probably a mixture of players in Rainey, Demps, James, Haden until their recruite Debose learns the system and gets some experience. They say he is a beast, but I am not big on counting on incoming Freshman. Harvin was good, but wasn’t the Harvin of 07 and 08 during his rookie season. I think they have more than enough talent to replace him and according to Meyer, they will replace him. I, like you, think their offense will take a step back without him so we are not debating that. However, their Defense will be even better and regardless of what you choose to believe, they have ZERO ?’s on the Defensive side. You are acting like UF is going to go from 40+ ppg to less than 20. IF that were the case, yes, Defense wouldn’t be enough, but UF is still going to score a lot of points. Their Oline is going to be very loaded and deep. They return their top 3 rb’s, their qb, their TE, and one of their wr’s. Replacing Harvin and Murphey will not be easy, but it is easier than having to replace every skill starter imo.
88, going into the season in 08, I would have said that UF’s top 5 players were 1. Tebow 2. Harvin(missed 2 very important games and UF scored 45 and 31 winning both) 3. Spikes. 4. Ingram(ACL)….Hernandez stepped in just fine 5. Munroe(ACL)…..Ahmad Black stepped in just fine
Florida actually had guys that were coached up and stepped in and did fine and Ga didn’t. I could be wrong, but I remember UF having 5 acl season ending injuries before the season started last year and they turned out just fine. Their best safety black wasn’t even supposed to play and was their weak link to start the season. He turned out leading the nation in INT’s and pretty much making the game winning play in the NC game.

What is with this coaching staff getting caught so flat footed concerning the QB position…heck everyone knew that Stafford was turning pro and yet the backups don’t get any game reps…so you roll into the 2009 campagin w/ Cox, who if Stafford didn’t go pro would not have had any meaningful reps since 2006 against a woeful 2 & 10 Colorado team…you got Gray running back punts last year after redshirting his freshman year, again with no meaningful reps in a game until, well he’s still waiting for that…so you have a 5th year guy who will be gone this year and maybe Gray his Heir Apparent for the next couple of years w/ no game experience to speak of…then you have Met amd Murray who both may be redshirted because gee that’s the thought pattern at UGA…I can’t invision Murray sticking around holding a clip board for one year, let alone two, and if Met’s mother didn’t work at the school, I doubt that he’d be sticking around…CMR does some good things in this world, but he needs to step it up if he ever hopes to win a NC; heck, just winning the SEC East may be a stretch w/ his coaching style, he’s no Urban Meyer…if CMR keeps this up, he’ll be gone in a matter of years…BTW; even JoePa came around and plays freshman

Don’t say he backed up a great qb because the same can be said that UF’s wr’s backed up two great wr’s which they did….AND….UF’s wr’s did play a lot….Cooper was a starter that only had 18 catches I believe. UF asks more from their wr’s.

and again, how can you say UF fans are delusional for thinking their offense will be better since they only lost two wr’s, yet you have said and every dog on here has said that UGA’s offense will be better when they lost their starting qb, rb, te, wr, and fb……Please explain that logic. You can’t. YOU CAN NOT HAVE IT BOTH WAYS
As for containing UGA’s DT’s….they did just fine against OU’s and they are equal or better personal than UGA and most outside of Athens would agree. UF’s oline and dline is ranked top 5 and 10 in almost every preseason mag so they are high on everyones radar. UF’s Dline is also very good. Cunningham and Dunlap are excellent pass rushers and they will rotate roughly 11 guys on the line throughout a game and that doesn’t even include Spikes lining up at the End position. There is not a weakness or hole on UF’s Defense. You can kid yourself if you want to, but there isn’t.
Just give the Gators credit….Go ask 10 guys that are not UGA fans who do they like…
UGA’s Oline or UF’s Dline…..
UGA’s Dline or UF’s Oline……
I guarantee you that the majority will say UF 2X
UF also has 5 LB’s that constantly see the field in Spikes, Jones, Hicks, Stamper, Doe(ALL HAVE STARTED)
UF has Wright, Black, Hill, and Munroe at the safety position who have all started at some point.
They have two of the best CB’s in the sec and nation in Haden and Jenkins. Oh, and their backups Louis and Anderson started some in 06 and 07.
UF basicall has a 22 starters on defense. That equals ZERO holes in my book
