As rallying cries go, this one is a bit weird: “We’re better off now because nobody thinks we’re the best team in the country.” But this is college football, where anything is grist for the motivational mill.
A year ago the Georgia Bulldogs found themselves ranked No. 1, and they didn’t like the way that turned out. So now they’ve decided it’s better not to have drawn a single vote to finish first in the SEC East. (Florida was a unanimous choice at the conference’s Media Days.) It’s better being considered not nearly as good.
Mark Richt told the Greater Atlanta Bulldog Club last month that he feels he “has a lot more juice” going into this season. Last year, he recalled, he’d gone on a mission trip and had returned to face a barrage of questions on two fronts – the number of off-field incidents involving Georgia players, which hasn’t been an issue this time, and being the first team in school history ranked preseason No. 1, which isn’t an issue, either.
And there is a compelling recent precedent. In 2005 the Bulldogs were picked to finish third in the East for what seemed good reason: They’d lost their longtime starting quarterback. Indeed, that’s what some players chanted during the celebration on the floor of the Georgia Dome after they’d beaten LSU for the 2005 league title: “Third in the East … third in the East …”
We don’t yet know if Joe Cox can do as D.J. Shockley did four years ago – steer his team to a championship after waiting his turn – but the parallel alone gives the Bulldogs hope. So does the return of two anchors from injury: Trinton Sturdivant, the sturdy left tackle, and Jeff Owens, the forceful defensive tackle.
Georgia’s hope this season is to be strong where it was weak in 2008 – up front. Nobody is suggesting Matthew Stafford and Knowshon Moreno won’t be missed, but the Bulldogs should never lack for talent at the skill positions. Cox doesn’t have Stafford’s arm and Caleb King lacks Moreno’s wiggle, but these are still SEC-caliber players.
That said, this will mark only the fourth time in Richt’s tenure at Georgia, which is entering its ninth season, the Bulldogs have approached a season with an untested No. 1 quarterback. In 2001, David Greene’s first season as starter, they finished 8-4. In 2006, the season that began with Joe Tereshinski III as No. 1 and saw Cox start at Ole Miss and finished with Stafford in control, they were 9-4.
Put another way, the two worst seasons under Richt – not to say that a four-loss campaign is “bad” – have come when the No. 1 quarterback was a relative newbie. The belief here is that 2009 will be a similarly lesser year, that four losses will again be the result, that this will be more like 2006 than 2005.
Then again, I was among those who believed Georgia would be the best team in the land in 2008. So I’m already one of the prime motivators. Glad to be of service, guys.
Sept. 5, Oklahoma State at Stillwater: Some Bulldog fans see OSU as another Arizona State. Different league, folks. OSU 30, Georgia 20.
Sept. 12, South Carolina at Athens: The Evil Genius marred 2007 season by winning at Sanford Stadium. Not this time. Georgia 24, South Carolina 14.
Sept. 19, Arkansas at Fayetteville, Ark.: Tempting to go with the Hogs, but the Richt road mojo will carry the day. Georgia 21, Arkansas 20.
Sept. 26, Arizona State at Athens: OK, here’s the real Arizona State, and here’s the first easy win of 2009. Georgia 31, Arizona State 10.
Oct. 3, LSU at Athens: Big-time opponent enters big-time environment and leaves with big-time victory. LSU 24, Georgia 23.
Oct. 10, Tennessee at Knoxville: Any letdown potential after LSU will be overridden by the Kiffin Factor. Georgia 24, Tennessee 13.
Oct. 17, Vanderbilt at Nashville: Another road game in the Volunteer State, this one tougher. But still a Georgia “W.” Georgia 27, Vanderbilt 20.
Oct. 31, Florida at Jacksonville: Strange things happen on Halloween, don’t they? Nothing this strange, I fear. Florida 30, Georgia 17.
Nov. 7, Tennessee Tech at Athens: Don’t look now, but Georgia’s sixth victory will be its third in a row over a team from Tennessee. Georgia 42, Tennessee Tech 10.
Nov. 14, Auburn at Athens: Yes, the road team tends to win in this strange series. But not when Gene Chizik coaches the road team. Georgia 24, Auburn 14.
Nov. 21, Kentucky at Athens: Three in a row for the surging Bulldogs, setting the stage for the big game in Atlanta. Georgia 33, Kentucky 17.
Nov. 28, Georgia Tech at Atlanta: Willie Martinez has had a year to figure out Paul Johnson’s offense. He’ll need another. Georgia Tech 30, Georgia 24.

Tons and tons of hype about this Cowpoke offense and gallons of ink being laid at the feet of Dez Bryant. IMO Bryant will be the third best WR at Pickens Stadium behind both A.J. Bryant and Marlon Brown. Defense wins games like this and I think Martinez will have the Dawgs ready to continue Georgia’s domination on the road.
I also do not see Mark Richt losing two in a row to the North Ave. Jihadists.

turban…you are an idiot to say an incoming freshman will be better than Bryant with such confidence.
Also, incase you forgot, Ga’s D was just as bad if not worse than OSU’s last year so your logic on D is stupid as well since neither was good…and if you think Ga’s will be better fine, but OSU’s will improve as well, but OSU’s offense will be much better to take some pressure off of their D

TampaGator- point taken on 06 team- mine was to say every team goes through some sort of rebuilding every few years FLA included. It is nice to be able to debate and talk no matter if we agree or disagree on points in a respectable way- unfortunately, that isnt always the case on here- so thanks for that from a Dawg to a Gator. Also agree UF will be mentioned when talking SEC and NC as will UGA and the other top programs. Bottom line….any given day any SEC team can beat another- more so when top tier SEC teams are playing- so no one is really “unbeatable” it will be a fun year…..

Mark, Mark……MARK!!! I realize that part of your perceived duties as a sports writer is to generate controversial articles; howerver, your prediction regarding game scores is fairly laughable!! Do you not realize that Joe Cox is a much more dedicated, accurate passer than Stafford? Yeah, Stafford could throw really hard but what was his completion percentage on the [bone-headed Bobo called] long passes? Joe Cox put up phenomenal numbers at his NC high school and will be throwing to two very fast, athletic receivers. Joe has a touch on the ball that Stafford can only dream about!! UGA will absolutely light up the North Avenue Trade School this year. And a loss to the Cowboys?? Okie State has a pathetic defense and will be exposed. Yes, UGA will lay another egg versus Florida but what else is new? 8 – 4??? No way, no how. UGA might go 10 – 2 but your predicted UGA scores are way, way too low. Hide and watch, Mark.

Oklahoma State is a solid team, their QB Robinson is very good, their RB Hunter is impressive, they do a lot of WR/RB screens. Georgia has stronger DL and OL and more speed, our RBs and Wrs are not push over either, they are athletic and very skillful, Georgia will stop the run and beat OSU
Georgia may lose to LSU or to Ark and people might question my sanity but unlike the whole world’s prediction I have strong feeling that Georgia will beat Florida and ruin their season…..

I can say with absolute certainty that UGA will be 12-0. Wait, I meant 11-1. No, no, really 10-2. Just a sec, 9-3. Got it now, 8-4. Hold on, 7-5. Rethinking, 6-6. Not sure, 5-7. Really, it’s 4-8. No kidding, 3-9. Gut reaction, 2-10. Flawless analysis, 1-11. Goodness gracious, it’s got to be 0-12. Somewhere in there, I’ve clearly seen the future of this team. So, I don’t care about your guesses. If you have something to offer that helps me better understand the players, the coaches, or the playbook, I’m your boy. But let’s leave the wins and losses to the guys who put on the pads.

ThaMan, yes……face it. Your triple-fumble offense will have the yellow-clad, golf-clapping fans exiting your [gargantuan] stadium by the 2nd quarter. GT lost a ton of talent on defense and the UGA defense will be much faster this year. I’m not sure if UGA can best the recent 51 – 7 spanking but it should be very close to that. Good luck and I look forward to November.

insanedawg…are you really saying that Joe Cox is better than Stafford(#1 overall pick) based on mop up duty and highschool games?….If so, I don’t even know why I am wasting my time with you.
To the rest saying that the score predictions are too low and all that other crap, UGA lost 2 of their top 3 wr’s, their top 15 draft pick RB, #1 overall qb, starting FB, and starting TE and you people act like that is nothing. Basicall UGA brings back their best WR imo and a good Oline, but when you lose pretty much every single skill position, there will be a dropoff and the offense wasn’t that impressive last year in several games like the 14 vs USC, 24 vs Vandy last year but mad when he predicts 27 this year…hahahahaha, 10 vs UF, 17 vs Auburn.
You guys can act like UGA will just plug in another #1 qb and a #15 rb etc etc all you want, but the facts are if they were as good or better than what left, they would have started last year or we would have atleast seen them more.
I think 8-4 is actually a good number and i would not be surprised if UGA lose more. This is a tough schedule and UGA will not be as good as last year

nasty thug, with much better players on offense, UGA scored 27 on AZU last year so to say that 20 is too low against a much better OSU team is crazy… It is OSU’s offense who will help out their defense. I don’t think you are giving OSU enough credit. That game could go either way and anyone who says it couldn’t is crazy. I guarantee you that Mark would agree. Everyone has a prediction, but I bet he agrees that either team “COULD” win that game. If I had to bet or make a prediction, I’d say OSU will beat UGA, too.
Old Fan, that was gay…The fun part about sports is sitting around giving predictions and debating. We can’t help it that you take offense that everyone isn’t scratching UGA’s nuts and predicting NC’s for UGA. I bet you had no problems last year when everyone was predicting UGA to go 14-0 and win a NC. I sure didn’t because again, that is what makes the weeks before the season fun. Who is going to win that game, who is going to win this game, who wins the Heisman, who wins the NC, who pulls the App St/Mich upset this year…etc….that is what is fun and you know it. You just don’t like these predictions because they don’t make you feel good about the dogs
Insane, GT beat UGA last year which is all that counts. You can keep pounding your chest over a game 8 yrs ago if you want to, but it won’t change the fact that they do have the bragging rights until November…and they WILL be a favorite again this year
Wayne, what makes you feel UGA will beat UF? Tech maybe, but UF. They bring back everyone almost. They didn’t lose ONE SINGLE player on the ENTIRE defensive depth chart…people keep saying the 2 deep…that is wrong. They didn’t lose one player off the 3 deep or 4 deep other than one kid they kicked off. Now, UGA scored a whopping 10 on them last year with 7 coming very late so what makes you feel that UGA’s Offense which will be worse will score enough on their D who will be even better? Also, on offense, they bring back everyone minus one OL and 2 wr’s. They averaged 40+ per game so even if that goes down to 30….who in the hell will score 30 on them? I don’t see them losing a game although anything is possible, but what makes you honestly believe that it will be UGA?

The only WR was MOMASS…Southerland didn’t play half the season at FB Munzenmeire played most of the time, Which starting TE? Figgins is still here and now O.Chalres and Lynch are too, and KING, and SAMULE played a ton a RB last year
again 16 starters return (18 if you count Owens and Sturdivant)

As long as we’re discussing the 8 – 4 subject, the North Avenue Trade School will be fortunate to win 8 games this year with losses to VT, Florida State, NC, Miami and possibly Clemson. So it’s 8 – 4 at best for Yech but possibly 7 – 5. The triple option is not seen in the NFL for obvious reasons – good defenses can shut it down and there are too many risks for turnovers.

Insane Dog, how do you know Cox is a hard worker and Stafford was not? Why will stafford not succeed? Why will Cox be so great?…..BASED ON WHAT??? Don’t give me your feelings or what you believe. Give me some facts or atleast some good reasoniong, but don’t act like you know Cox is a hard worker or knows the offense because you don’t and anything CMR says about him is coaches speak and that is it. Period
corch smith…maybe you need to follow the dogs if you are going to be a fan and comment on them. I was wrong about 2 of the top 3…I misspoke, but they did lose Mass and as of now, UGA has NOBODY to take the doubles off of Green. You be my guest and count on a true freshman, but I will not. I am a realist and true freshman usually don’t make that big of an impact. Yes Jones did for Bama and Green did for UGA, but for you to believe in every single true freshman is stupid and UGA does NOT have 16 starters returning. You need to find out what a starter is? Someone who plays doesn’t make him a starter….he has to START….DUH. and as for King and Samuels….they are no where near what Moreno was. Watch a game from last year and you will see that when they came in, the drives sputtered and they only had 61 and 26 carries so don’t say they played a lot. Samuels averaged 2 carries a game and King averaged 4.7 carries per game and most of those carries came against GSU and CMU, but you are blinded once again so you wouldn’t know that.
88, Harvin didn’t play in 3 games while at UF due to injury. 2007 vs South Carolina…UF scored 51! 2008 vs FSU…UF scored 45! and 2008 vs #1 Bama….UF scored 31. You can deny it all you want, but UF has a lot of talent and while Harvin was a great player for them, they will be just fine without him. Even if their avg score goes down 10 points from 40+ down to 30, they will still win the games. They have a lot of talent at wr and everyone else returned at the other positions pretty much. Again, you have to be a realist and just admit when someone else is good. They WILL be better. Hell, suppose everyone holds them to 20(which they will not)…do you realize that only 3 teams scored 20 or more on them all year. Ole Miss scored 31….LSU scored 21(UF won 51-21)….and bama hit 20 on the nose. Their D will be better so even if teams hold them to 20, how will they score 20 or more on UF…It will be very hard.
after UF’s loss, they gave up 7, 21(garbage time td late up 51-14), 5, 10, 14, 6, 19, 15, 20, 14
They held OKLAHOMA to just 14….dude…give them their props. This may be the greatest college defense any of us have ever seen, but you will never be able to admit that will ya

jealous, so UGA can say they will be BETTER replacing their #1 overall Draft pick with Cox who is unproven, yet UF fans can’t say they will be EQUAL replacing what most think is a system qb that will do nothing in the NFL????? Dude you can’t have it both ways. Think about it, if UF loses their qb, they lose 4 games although they return everyone on D and most everyone on O….while UGA loses their qb(who was a #1 overall pick) and much more and you guys are crying about this column predicting what you predict for UF…..can you not see how you sound like an idiot along with the rest crying over here?/….seriously
…and I actually agree with him. All I have heard is that their backup is a better passer than Tebow, a quicker and faster runner, but doesn’t have the tough running ability. More of an Alex Smith type..but again, with that Defense, they still wouldn’t lose no more than 2 games if Tebow went down…If you disagree, fine, who would beat them?
As for Aaron Murray being better than Brantley, what are you basing this on? If your answer is “they were more highly regarded out of highschool”, save that crap. Stafford was a higher regarded choice over Tebow also, but who has the rings? Emmanuel Moody was more highly regarded than Jonathon Dwyer, but I guarantee you that UF would trade with them in a heartbeat….so save your 3rd grade logic

As for the gators, UGA may have better rb’s although it isn’t a fact, but they do not have better wr’s. They may have the best ONE out of the two teams, but not the best group. Wayne, Miami in 02 and USC in 05 didn’t lose to their rival. They made it to the NC game. As for UF, why are they full of themselves. I guess the same way UGA was preseason last year and all coaches at this level have an ego. Surely, you can admit that

UGA is a great school and program, but anyone who can be somewhat objective will admit that GA will have a 8-4 type year. Could they surprise the doubters…sure…they could also surprise the believers. Hell they could surprise everyone and turn in a 6-6 or go 12-0….that is why I am telling you not to take it serious when someone says they will lose 4. You have to admit that they have a lot of ?’s…..

comedy fool:
” You lose more often than not so something UGA has is NOT better than what UF has. Maybe you can figure it out since you have all the answers.”
what the hell are you drinking? Cheese ball colors, jorts and mullett cuts must really crimp the brain. Awww, is the baby gonna weep? You and Tebow must be related – always crying when things don’t go your way. Face the facts Cheesey: you are out numbered and you will be villainized on this site. If you don’t like it, get lost. Oh, and you still don’t know sh!t!!!

There’s NO CRYING in football, Tesla!!!!! Get it?? Timmy T-Bone CRIED and UGA MADE HIM CRY!!!! UGA also made the clown QB from Hawaii cry like a little lost 3-year-old at a crowded mall. When did you ever, EVER see a UGA player cry? That’s what it has to do about football, Hawking. Do I have to draw a picture for you? Gracious!!!!!!
