ESPN: Tech’s Dwyer is the nation’s second-best back

I tried to make the point last week, but nobody ever listens to me. But maybe you folks will take heed when somebody employed by the Worldwide Leader says something. So here goes:

Bruce Feldman of ESPN.com Insiders presented his list of the nation’s 10 best backs, and he ranks Jonathan Dwyer of Georgia Tech No. 2. (Who’s No. 1? Caleb King? Uh, no.) Since this is one of those links that requires registration, I’ll provide Mr. Feldman’s top 10:

  1. Jahvid Best, California
  2. Dwyer, GT
  3. Quizz Rodgers, Oregon State
  4. Charles Scott, LSU
  5. Kendall Hunter, Oklahoma State
  6. LeGarrette Blount, Oregon
  7. C.J. Spiller, Clemson
  8. Evan Royster, Penn State
  9. MiQuayle Lewis, Ball State
  10. Noel Devine, West Virginia

It’s a nice list, as lists go — heavy on the Pac-10, which is fine by me. And Georgia fans should note that the Bulldogs will face three of the top five. But it’s from Feldman’s description of Dwyer that I find my sustenance:

“Despite playing in a major college football media market, Dwyer still is a bit under the radar. But he has everything necessary to make a Heisman run: power, excellent speed and a system (the Triple Option) where it’s hard to key on him. In 2008, he ran for almost 1,400 yards while he and his teammates were still in the incubation stage of Paul Johnson’s system. The scary part was this 233-pounder still had runs of at least 58 yards in four of Tech’s final five games of the season. Putting a talent like Dwyer in the Triple Option feels a little when Steve Nash met Mike D’Antoni.”

The Nash/D’Antoni comparison is pithy and apt, but the point I sought to make last week is that Dwyer isn’t just a “system back.” He’d be great in the “I” or the veer or the single wing. But in this system he’s all but unstoppable. If he’s not a Heisman candidate, my name isn’t Pepper Rodgers.

He might be the best back in the nation. he will take alot of hits even when he’s not touching the ball. So he is an extra tough player when you add that on.

Beautiful article, Mr. Bradley. Dwyer probably won’t win because he isn’t hyped as much, and will be labeled a “system” RB like stated above.

I guess Tebow isn’t, though?? Even Bradford? They aren’t “system” QB’s? Bah.

Dwyer is a BEAST!! To have that size, breakaway speed in the open field and the ability to run over defenders is just amazing. And like the first poster mentioned–he gets hit on every play. He was impressive as a true freshman in 2007 playing out of the pro set. And obviously good enough out of HS for Calvin Johnson to let him have his number which will undoubtedly be retired one day…for whom we will have to wait and see! GO JACKETS!!! 30 more days….

Take a look at some of Jonathan’s Highlights for yourself:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aFbcSM6XHec

Jonathan’s got size, strength, agility; he can catch the ball out of the backfield, and Jonathan’s got the speed – he won’t get caught from behind. Jonathan’s also shown his durability; he’s in on almost every Offensive play and is getting hit on almost every play as well.

Show me any other Running Back in the Country who can do all of that at the same time. Jonathan is the total package.

GT Nerd

Crazy GT article:

Success would continue in 2001 as Mark Richt came to town as Georgia’s new head coach. Richt and his team would win that first meeting 31-17 in Atlanta. Richt would go on to win seven straight, before losing to the Jackets for the first time this year.

So what have we learned today?

We know that it takes very LITTLE success to make a Jacket fan happy. After all, they have won 12 games in the past 45 seasons.

To Georgia fans at 33-12 record since 1964 looks pretty good.

We know that Tech fans are overjoyed after winning for the first time in seven years. Losing seven of eight, 14 of 18, and 23 of 31 doesn’t seem so bad.

Back to normal in 2009 when UGA starts another dominating winning streak. But you nerds enjoy your win until November. Loser

Tech has had its share of solid running backs the last several years. PJ Daniels, Tashard Choice. Dwyer, is the best of the three, but the depth is the backfield this year will probably keep his numbers down.

Jonathan Dwyer is a very special running back. I cannot think of a single college football team where he would not start. There are some factors that should prove beneficial to him this year. One is that the offensive line should know their assignments better than last year, have more depth and should provide improved blocking overall. Another is that Georgia Tech is very deep at running back this year which should help take some of the load off of Dwyer and keep him “fresher”. Regarding his Heisman candidacy, it will certainly be a difficult task to overtake the three quarterbacks (Bradford, McCoy and Tebow) that are sure to receive so much attention. However, if Georgia Tech has a special year and Dwyer stays healthy and shows improvement over last year’s performance, he has a shot.

Dwyer was streaking down the sideline and I think Burnett ran him out of bounds. But I guess that what you get when you have the two best players in the ACC going at it.

Too bad Dwyer doesn’t showboat or jump over Central Michigan defenders and get tackled immeadiately afterwards, he definitely win the Heisman then.

Lets get real !!!!!

I know that all this dillusional dribble on both sides is part of the rivalry, but lets bring this conversation into focus…

Point 1. UGA is 7-1 going into this season, but that doesn’t matter much at this point. Team rosters will change from year to year with great players (ie. C. Johnson, M. Stafford, K Moreno, D. Richard) on both sides and rosters in general changing from year to year. The difference is what happens in the coaching ranks. I would suggest that GT with CPJ and his coaching staff has elevated GT to a level where they will perform at high level every year. At the same time, while Richt is a tremendous coach. I do not have the same confidence on the defensive side of the ball. Simply put, at the coaching level where it matters the playing field is tilted slightly in favor of GT, where before it was not even close. UGA won hands down, especially with Van Gorder, but that is in the past.

Point 2. Its been said many a time but last year was CPJ’s first year. He has put in less than 50% of his system. The o-line was patchwork at best, trying to field a starting unit. We had one OT who was a converted TE and the other a converted DT from the year before. This year we have 12 people fighting for 5 slots, with 2 starters possibly being beaten out. Saying this, we stll gashed defenses. As a result, more of the package being implemented including a passing game that was non-existent, and a upgrade in personnel bodes well for GT.

This all means, what has happened in the last 10-20-30 years… It does not matter. There are enough changes occurring on the flats and between the hedges that the rivalry is back…We’ll see what happens later this year. I can guarantee you that it will be a war. If things remain as they are now on both campuses (coaching staffs, etc.), don’t expect it to change any time soon.

Why can’t you just be glad that a university in Georgia is being recognized as having an outstanding football player with his character. I can’t wait for Tech to smack ‘dat A@# again this year. I think Dawg fans know it but would not like to admit it, but if Dwyer were at UGA, I don’t think it would have been a foregone conclusion that Knowshon Moreno would have been the starter last year. Moreno is a very good back, but he was not as sturdy (getting dinged up) or as fast as Dwyer. While Moreno might hurdle defenders, Dwyer is a load to tackle and has an extra gear (was a track star in high school) that Moreno doesn’t possess.

Wow.

Jonathan Dwyer = Reggie Ball

Wishful thinking IMO. I can’t believe one, much less, two, posters even suggested this is close to being true.

I’ve said it before, but I will say it again for my fellow Dawg fans that peruse the AJC blogs. Our recent past against Tech has been an awful lot of fun (80s to present), no doubt about it, but if we are not paying attention to what is happening on The Flats, we are not being the astute observers of college football that we think we are.

Paul Johnson does not care at all about what Tech’s record was in anything prior to his arrival. Doesn’t matter to him, plain and simple.

Their offense is loaded this year, period, end of story…I’m fine to admit that, and it all starts with Dwyer at B-Back, who is absolutely the real deal. If Nesbitt has made any strides since last year, the O will be virtually impossible to stop, unless they lay it on the grass like they did a couple of times last year.

We’ll see how their D handles the loss of some key guys, which is a legit concern for them heading into the fall, and I’m sure they know that.

I know we feel the need to make fun of their stadium size, male/female ratio, the quality of the “female” value in the male/female ratio, doing calculus during games, etc….but once in a while, it’s nice to talk actual football too.

I can’t wait to head to BDS@HSG in November!

As a Ga fan I’ll say this, I don’t know that if I had Dwyer I would trade him for any other back in the country. Big, physical, fast, runs with heart, the whole shootin’ match. Ga’s defense is talking like they’re going to be better, and they had better be if they are going to compete against GT’s offense this year and beyond. I’m glad the rivalry is back, makes the winning that much sweeter. Good luck and an injury free year to the Jackets. Jay-

I hear you.

I try to limit my barking to GameDay only events and/or any other time it seems appropriate (i.e. after more than the recommended daily allowance of cold adult beverages when my buddies deem it necessary to break into a rendition of “What’s that coming down the tracks”). That still never gets old for some reason.

I have seen the random UGA fan bark at a Tech guy completely out of context, and that is one I just do not understand. I am hoping against all hopes that these people are not alums.

As for my professional life, I learned long ago not to bark at my clients, even if they are part of the Bulldog Nation….just kind of sends the wrong message!

Dwyer was just named as one a select few running backs to possibly have the honor of winning the Doak Walker trophy this coming year. And, oh my the way, another one is Jeff Demps of Florida. I guess that puts an end to the comments “that Florida does not have any good running backs.” And, no running back was nominated from Georgia I am sorry to say. Just FYI.

Dwyer will have a much better chance of winning the Heisman in 2010 (if he stays at GT for his senior year of course!). He is absolutely stellar and we are very fortunate to have him at GT.

GT has so many solid running backs that it will be hard for Dwyer to get the touches, yards & touchdowns required to actually win the Heisman. I hope he stays at GT his senior year, becomes a front runner for the Heisman and ends up staying in games to increase his stats………..this would also increase the likelihood of a legitimate run for the National Championship in 2010!!

If you are going to dream; I say dream BIG!

Mark, thanks for good GT press.

I’ve only missed two of Dwyer’s college games. I’ve seen that kid make runs that seemed to make time stand still. He can absolutely fly in the open field. I’ve seem him run over linemen and linebackers and defensive backs with concussion power. He can pop you one on one.
Every time that I have talked to him, he has conducted himself with humility and graciousness.
Jonathan Dwyer is a very special person and I am very, very thankful that he’s a student at Georgia Tech.
Here’s to hoping he has a Heisman worthy season and brings the trophy back home.

As a college football fan who graduated from another university other than Tech & UGA, one has to appreciate and enjoy watching Jonathan Dwyer every time he runs. Fast, big, and strong – you sense he can break a long run on a lot of plays. Watching players like him on a Saturday or Thursday night is the fun part of college football.

As a die hard Dawg fan, I tip my hat to JD. He’s a class act and one heck of a football player. Unfortunately, the fan base he plays for is the antifhesis of a class act and for whatever reason will not support the team by purchasing a ticket to the game. Come on, 26,000 season tickets! Tech graduates should be ashamed of themselves.

BetweenHerHedges

August 5th, 2009
9:25 pm

Another Day, if you look at ticket sales based on “graduates,” you will find that Tech has been doing better then uga recently. From a post on stingtalk.com, Tech has 12,744 undergrads with an average football attendance of 47,489. uga has 25,163 undergrads with an average football attendance of 92,746. Thus, Tech football attendance is 3.73 times undergrad enrollment while uga’s football attendance is only 3.69 times undergrad enrollment. Factor in the intellects at Tech that do not like sports and the competition with pro sports that cow college uga doesn’t have, and I think Tech does very well with football attendance. Oh, and Tech’s season ticket purchasing is trending upward even in this depression while many other teams (including sec teams) are trending downward.

To add on to BetweenHerHedges point, Tech’s got about 1/4 the student body that UGA has. So there are about 1/4 the number of possible die hard fans. Then once you consider that many GT grads live out of state (I’d bet it is a significantly higher percentage than UGA grads), you see why GT’s attendance is pretty respectable. Winning will help GT gain more non-alumni fans.

Dwyer is in the same league with Herschal Walker, and he’s one step below Bo Jackson (maybe the greatest ever). All three have the same style. For this reason, I think he will earn the Heisman trophy this year with a 1800 yd season, 10.0 yds/carry and 20 TDs.

Another Day in Paradise

BHH and Joe. Nice dialogue.

BHH. Your logic seems flawed for your math does not factor in that UGA fans are constrained by the stadium size as you’ve accurately noted at 92,746 which just happens to also be the average attendance. Every game is sold out.. Truth is, they could increase the stadium size to well over 100,000 and the stadium would still be sold out. Conversely, your denominator used in the Tech calculation is the “average” attendance which I believe is less than the stadium capacity. You need to compare apples to apples.

Joe. Are you suggesting that over the last 40-50 years, GT does not have enough local area graduates to sell more than 26,000 season tickets? That’s hard to believe especially if you keep in mind that the 26,000 more than likely includes many non-alumni.

The bottom line is that UGA fans (alumni as well as non alumni) are passionate about the Dawgs and SEC football, while Tech fans seem to be preoccuppied with trying to insure that they get equal respect by the media. Unfortunately for the Tech program, until it becomes a consistent winner in “big time games” (and that’s somewhat problematic as a result of playing in the ACC) they’re going to struggle getting the respect that the fans so desperately want. Instead of playing the Jacksonville States and Gardner Webbs, the program will need to try and compete at a higher level. UGA has traditionally been a huge boost to the Tech schedule, but they’ll need to fill in the gaps with some other strong programs.

Lastly, the Tech faithful do their program a disservice when they jump up and down and beat on their chest after defeating UGA for the first time in 8 years. As the old saying goes, “act like you’ve been there before”, and you will soon gain the respect of not only UGA but other surrounding schools who might bear witness to such sophomoric acts.

Harley Dawg, Caleb King would not be good in the ACC. One, the ACC has more of the top 10 RBs in the nation than the SEC. Two, the ACC is a defensive conference. Check the draft, we send more defensive players to the NFL than the SEC. Don’t buy into the hype…the SEC is great, with the best top 4, maybe even top 6, teams of any conference. But that doesn’t mean it’s the best at everything.

Also, to Another Day in Paradise. We sell only have sold 26,000 tickets because all of us don’t live in Atlanta. I’m not going to throw out a lot of mean stereotypes, but most UGA grads wind up within 100 miles of UGA. Personally, I live 50 miles south of Tokyo, Japan. I flew 14 hours and paid $1400 last year to watch GT beat The U and UGA. When was the last time you put that kind of investment into a UGA game?

Did you really just say that Dwyer is in the same league as Walker??? Dwyer is an outstanding back, but you are comparing him to the one player who most experts agree is the best college football player EVER! Dwyer was not even the best player last year, that would be Tim Tebow. Tech had 438 rushing yards against Miss. St. (sec) with JD collecting 141! LSU (sec) caught us with our pants down (opinion), but we managed 164 yrds and managed to hold JD to 67 yrds…. Tech (ACC) vs. the ‘tough’ sec defenses…988 yards in just three games. By comparrison, Moreno had 94 yrds and uga only managed 88 total rushing yards against Tech (i know stafford lit us up in passing). A. Dixon of Miss. St. had only 94 yrds. with a team total of 108 (Of course, they had to abandon the run and go to a toothless passing attack that only yeilded 3 pts. C. Scott had only 65 yrds and lsu ran for a team total of 161 yrds. Comparrison? Tech 988 rushing yards and sec vs. Tech… 357. Daniel Drummond is a freak of nature.

As I understand it, he is already one of the strongest kids on the team as a true freshman and some of his high school weightlifting numbers are just sick.

Do you guys see him as a B, or do you think he gets in the mix at one of the LB positions? On that note, are you guys now in a 4-2-5, 3-3-5, etc? I ask because I have heard the “wolf” position will be featured this year.

Yes.. I am old. I remember the days when the “Golden Hurricane” was great I have seen Trippi and Sinkwich in the same backfield. I never saw Clint Castleberry. I have seen mosty of the Alabama greats although I was too young to see Dixie Howell, Don Hudson, and “the other end” Again.. To those who are young, that was the “Bear”. I never saw Johnny Mac Brown(Alabama)whip ass on the west coast team in the Rose Bowl but I heard about it all my young life..I do remember, although didn’t see it, the whipping of Sou Cal by the Golden Hurricane out there in the early 50’s.
Then came 1953. Can you imagine the NCAA’s suddenly deciding that players must play both ways with limited substitution. Tech had a formidible half back, Leon Hardiman who couldn’t play defense. That is what happened in 1953. The NCAA screwed us. Many things happened in that period.
ND is out of time outs so a ND player fakes an injury against SMU to give ND time to score and win. I don’t remember if SMU had Doak Walker or Kyle Rote in that game..
Watch out for ND in the future. They will do anything legal or illegal to win unlike the teams that Tech plays in this part of the US.
You should have seen the Brown High team of 1950 that Dodd recrruited. Pepper at QB etc. Add Leon from Chattanooga and John Hicks Jr..from Talladega. Awesome..
During that era Tech was also Line Backer U. George and Larry Morris etc.
I can only wish for the return of the dominance which the Golden Hurricane exhibited over 50 years ago.
Remember this. Blocking is based on single wing type. The guards pull. The wild hog is single wing more or less. Things that worked are just reinvented..Athletes are athletes.

LSU destroyed Tech with a philosiphy that I learned a long time ago. ND was running a similar offense. Don’t take the fake. Destroy the QB on every play. One man.. One assignment. It goes on from here. Each defensive player has an assignment irrespective.to fakes etc.
LSU did that and practiced without a ball.
If Dwyer can pass, this can be negated.

AnotherDayinParadise….if you compare the 100+ D1 programs you might be shocked to find that GT’s allotment of sold tickets is above average. Tech has sold more season tickets than Miami, Maryland, Duke, Wake Forest, and Boston College. We are comparable with FSU, UNC and NC State. Only Clemson and VT have sold more than 5000 seats above GT. And each of those schools are like UGA with large student enrollments and with huge alumni in the area. Tech lacks both due to the nature of it being an engineering school rather than a Physical education or social services school like UGA.
