The NFL has finally ruled. Michael Vick can practice, but he can’t play until the final two preseason games. (This assumes he can find a team that will hire him, which I believe he will.) Once the regular season commences, he can do everything except play in games.
That’s in September and the first half of October. Once October passes its midpoint, he can play in real games, too.
I don’t get it.
Maybe there’s a Solomonic compromise embedded in Roger Goodell’s ruling, but for the life of me I can’t find it. What I see is a commissioner who felt pressured to do something even if he wasn’t quite sure doing anything more is warranted. So he half-stepped. He also overstepped.
This is, to use a football term, piling on. Vick has been suspended by the NFL for 23 months and three days. If the league wanted to disassociate itself with him completely, it could have just said, “Suspension stands. Sorry, Mike.” But clearly it doesn’t want to disassociate itself with Vick. Clearly it doesn’t want him to pop up first in the low-rent United Football League. It wants to see him on an NFL field again.
Just not quite yet.
Why? For no other reason I can discern beyond cosmetic issues. The NFL wants Vick back but it doesn’t want to appear as it’s welcoming him back. And that’s understandable. He’s a convicted felon. He just did 20 months in government custody. But docking him six more games — eight if you count the two exhibitions — isn’t really a penalty. It’s a nuisance. It’s Goodell doing an Alexander Haig and saying, “I’m in charge here.”
OK, Vick embarrassed the NFL. We know that. And playing in the NFL isn’t a right but a privilege. We get that, too. But why have him on an NFL roster if you don’t want him playing — at least not yet — in NFL games? Either ban him or reinstate him fully. Why drag this into October? Why spend 2 1/2 more months reminding everyone of one of the sorriest chapters in league history? Why not just clear him and be done with it?
Because Roger Goodell wanted to look tough. But Roger Goodell didn’t want to look so tough as to drive Vick to a start-up league. So he tried to split the difference. Sorry to say, he missed. This satisfy neither the Vick haters or the Vick supporters. I doubt this even satisfies Roger Goodell.

I believe that Goodell simply wants to make sure that Vick will behave himself so he is essentially putting him on probation. The guy is high risk and just because he has already paid a price for his crimes and lies, no one knows for sure if he has learned from his mistakes. Goodell did the right thing.

You make a very interesting point about the NFL not wanting Michael Vick in the UFL or some other league, Mark. I really don’t see what the point is of letting him sign with someone – but he can’t play in regular-season games until October.
If they’re still trying to make a point, let him stay suspended. Otherwise, take it off completely. If Roger Goodell wants “conditions,” just tell Vick if he screws up again, he’s out. That seems simple enough.

Why the conditional reinstatement and continued suspension? Full reinstatement is essentially conditional on him staying clean and out of trouble. Goodell should have said you are fully reinstated – but one slip up and you are done. End of story.

No, it’s not just you, Mark. He paid two years of his life and all of his wealth for a lifestyle mistake that was probably ingrained in him at an early age. Outside of that, Vick has done nothing to warrant the label “high risk”. No need to drag this circus out any longer and Goodell loses some credibility with this move in my eyes.

That is a bizarre ruling on the suspension. Four preseason games are too many. What happened to the talk last winter about three preseason and adding one additional to the regular season. Seems like the costs would be about the same, I know the tickets cost the same.

IMO he should have been suspended for the entire 2009-10 season. This would have given the league an extended period of time to see if he could keep his nose clean. Then, if he didn’t have any further transgressions a full re-instatement would have been in order at the end of the season.

I agree with the either “ban him or reinstate him fully” and my response is to ban him fully. Michael Vick is a tarnished name that can only hurt the NFL. In a business sense… as the NFL is a business… if an employee has disrespected the entire company and brought nothing but bad publicity on it, which that’s all that I can see Vick providing… what employer… company… NFL Team… or whomever would ever want to hire that person back? This is absolutely ridiculous… Vick should be banned from the privilege of playing in the NFL and move on. I do not understand why for the life of me that because of his talents, the NFL should re-consider. Should all businesses re-hire a person because he or she had good looks and was nothing but bad news for the company… In all seriousness, there is absolutely no reason to reinstate Michael Vick at all and I personally regret the NFL’s decision to do so.

Just another case of ‘the man’ trying to keep someone down even after they have served their sentence. (Couldn’t resist.)
In all seriousness, this decision really makes no sense other than “King” Roger making a ‘ruling’ that he can get away with in order to send the proverbial ‘message’ that no one can lie to the Commish—even if they have already cost themselves over $100 million and almost two years of time served in jail and now face a lifetime of trying to reclaim some shred of integrity.

Mark Bradley is an idiot. Since the Commissioner has the discretion to make any ruling he wanted to, this ruling make perfect sense. (1) He made a statement to Mike Vick and every other idiot in the league that there is a penalty for hurting the league. (2) Any team considering Vick now knows the Comish takes this extremely seriously. (3) Every sports comemtator in the country now has something to do for the next three days, thus simulating the economy and keeping the NFL in the news.

I’ve got to give Goodell credit on this; Although he did suspend Vick for the remainder of the season before he went to prison…this added suspension as well as being on probation does seem like quite a bit but it’s warranted, its needed and its truly what has to happen. Vick; you are and forever will the example of what not to do. Somewhere in America there is a young teenage ball player who already is being hounded by college scouts and he’s a witness to what can happen when you make horrible choices.
The extra time given will give Mike all the room he needs to fail and prove all the nay sayers right or to excel and become a full member of society and the NFL again. Good Luck Vick; You’ve got your 2nd chance and once again…It’s All up to You! Be strong!!

I agree with the article, it is piling it on, but I don’t think it’s from Goodell showing who is charge, it’s a plan of ‘damage control’ because you know those PETA folks are gonna start up. He can at least say the NFL did something beyond the Government’s punishment. But listen, Vick has been out of football for 2 years. He won’t be near ready to step in as a starting QB until maybe towards the end of the season. He will have 6 weeks to get his mental reps in and work on his game. I’m just happy the guy is back, hopefully it’ll be a happy ending.

I couldn’t agree more, Mark. He broke the law, he served his time. If you want to suspend (though I’m not sure why), then do it. Otherwise, let him play.
In fact, I think the Falcons should sign him. He is an incredible talent and athlete. Let him play DB, or better yet let him play the wildcat–run, catch, throw. Besides, assuming he behaves himself (relatively speaking) what a great rags-to-riches story of forgiveness and redemption that would be.

I think it’s fair and piling on at the same time. Goodell has the right to do what he wants, and he’s staying somewhat consistent. The good thing is that Vick can get in practice. i fully believe he will catch on quickly…this guy is a phenomenon….just athletically…he can WIN more than alot of the QBs in the NFL right now. Another thing, Whoever the starter is, having Vick there can elevate that QB’s play…if he can handle #7 behind him, lol. If he was to get in trouble again, then there’s nothing more to say…he’ll be a loser, and I think he knows that. He willl get it done. Mark bradley…another great article.

Good luck Mike. Take ownership of your life, do the right things, and I wish you well…that is until you play the Falcons. I honestly am so tired of hearing about this although I understand why it is news. I am curious of Goodell’s decission here. It is almost like he is implementing this in order to discourage teams from signing him…or at least as a qb anyway. I wonder if this is a way of playing it both ways. “See I let Mike back in” meanwhile making the conditions so that teams will be encouraged to pass him over. He has paid this debt. I think now he sould be allowed to play but that being said I wouldn’t want him on my team if I were an owner.

I’d say it’s the best for everyone including MV.
Insurance for the league & owner. If he screws up again, he’s gone with no damage done.
The NFL does not want MV to be the #1 story opening week – nor does whoever signs him.
MV gets to ease into it without the ridiculous scrutiny he’d get if say, Tampa or Cleveland, hired him today to compete for starting QB. He may have it in him to play well, but enormous pressure from the get-go could get to him.

One thing this will do is give MV a lot of extra time getting football ready. Imaging him on the sideline having to watch during those six games working out and getting angry and ready to go. I would not want to be on the other side when he hits the field and runs around like a jet with feet taking out his revenge on defenders in the open field. He will go to the Raiders, who are building a fairly good size of talent. Imagine him and McFadden in the Wildcat with Mike at the wheel. Choose your poison….

Let’s not forget people were already souring on his playing “skills” on the field before he proved himself to be an idiot off the field.
He was Eric Crouch (do your history) with a stronger arm. His style of QB’ing wasn’t sustainable in the NFL. You MUST be able to consistently throw the ball down the field to win in the postseason. He was (and will remain) the ultimate wrinkle on offense, but nothing more. Evidence comes in the form that once people were able to do a decent job of containing him and not let him scramble out of the pocket his accuracy and defense reading abilities suffered tremendously–as did his decision making. Look at the numbers for qb’s during the end of his tenure with the falcons when teams started to figure him out, the guy was dropping Rex Grossman numbers.
Long story short, he SHOULD be allowed to play, but a team picking him up would probably end up regretting it. Not for this off the field crap, but because a mediocre (at best) quarterback who has been out of ALL football for 2 years probably isn’t worth it.

People need to take their personal feelings of this matter out of the equation and look at it for what it is. Bradley’s right that he mis-stepped and overstepped on this situation. Either you keep the indefinite suspension in place OR you re-instate him fully. It really doesn’t get any more simpler than that. I think that this is just Roger Goodell trying to make himself seem a lot more forceful than Paul Tagliabue in trying to uphold the image of the NFL, but in doing this he’s made himself look wishy washy.
It amazes me how much resentment there is for this young man. Yes, he committed a crime and he’s paid DEARLY for that crime. And yes, it IS a privilege to play in the NFL. So why is it that some people can’t get past that? Is it going to cause some controversy initially if he signs with a team? Yes, most definitely. But if I recall, there’s a current NFL player named Leonard Little who killed a PERSON and is still permitted to play in the league (yes, Tagliabue was still commissioner, but the guy still killed someone and was still allowed to play). It seems as if there’s some vendetta against Vick by those who don’t like him, and it’s your right to not like him for what he’s done. But when does it go away? When HE goes away? It’s seems quite obvious that he’s not going anywhere. You might not like it, but that’s your frustration and emotions on the situation that YOU have to deal with.

Roger Goodell is, for lack of a better word, a douche who is ruining the NFL. When the league goes through an uncapped year two years from now and loses the parity that has fueled its popularity up to this point, Goodell’s dismantling of the league will be complete. This decision is just another example of his general incompetence. I agree with Mark Bradley.

Eli Manning = 73 Games Played – 76 QB Rating. 55.9 Complete %
Mike Vick =74 Game Played – 75.7 QB Rating . 54 Complete %
A lot of people say that Eli iis one of the best QBs in the NFL. Vick will prove that he can be one of the best in the NFL.

There have been many NFL players who have done worse, a lot worse and didnt have as much punishment! I for one, will cheer for him. Not against my Falcons, but in every other way! Vick was never an “average” QB. He was the #1 pick in the NFL and the NFL’s biggest star because he won games and was exciting to watch. Just because he changed what you thought of the position didn’t mean he wasn’t a winner because he was.
People watched games to either root for him or root against him and it made money for the NFL and TV.
I do not condone what Mike did to the dogs. I also do not think that Mike Vick is “bad” for the NFL … no worse than 75% of the other guys in the league in regards to what he does … you just hear about it more because he was/is the leagues biggest star.
Mike has his second chance and when he starts taking down your favorite teams AGAIN I’m sure we will hear more of your cry-in-your-beers excuses of why he shouldn’t be in league. Quit complaining … He’s back just like we all (even all of you) knew he would be. I guess all of you that are PETA supporters will boycott the NFL and turn off your TVs when the games are on (just like all of those people who were going to close their businesses when Obama won office).
By the way … for all of the PETA supporters (and the majority hiding behind that)… whats the last thing you did to support PETA before before VIck went to jail?? Since he has been in jail ?? What are you going to do for PETA now that he is out ???

On another note, it appears Plaxico Burress might get over a year of jail time… for shooting HIMSELF. As much as I have objected to Vick’s sentence, two years for organizing a dogfighting ring will look positively light compared to that. Burress has a lot more to complain about than Vick.

Vick should screw the NFL and Dictator Goodell and go play for the UFL for a year. They’re willing to pay him $1million and give him playing time. To me, that’s a no-brainer. I’m not sure when the UFL games will be played, but i’m willing to bet every game Vick plays for the Orlando franchise would have higher ratings than the Tampa Bucs.

It’s obvious the NFL just wants to wait and see if Vick does something stupid. I think the timetable is fair. The NFL is saying, “OK, you’re out. Prove you’re going to be a good citizen first, then you can come back.”

He should come back as a wide receiver or a kick returner. It is going to be a long hard time for Vick to get his timing back to work at the QB position and let’s be honest passing was never his strong suit. He’s also older and those hits that running QB’s take are brutal. He should try and transition to another position to prolong his career and get back into the starting lineup on a team. He won’t be a starting quarterback again in the league for awhile if ever.

The black man would not get nearly as much “racism” if he would actually learn to work for a living, take care of his family, and not rob and kill each other at a drop of a hat. Black people shoot and kill each other all the time, this in turn gets put into the paper and the news, and when white people read this it makes them paranoid. You got a world champion boxer stopping by at a convenience store and getting shot 8 times and killed in South west Atlanta. The whole city of Atlanta is turning into one big ghetto. Black people have got to learn to take care of their own neighborhoods, their own families, and quit crying about the white man keeping them down. And for God sake stop shooting each other all the damn time

If Vick goes to UFL his fans will go there with him. A playing Vick will sell out NFL or UFL stadiums. Goodell is hurting the cash strapped NFL. I think there will be “protests” from players, player unions and civil rights groups who oppose “unusual punishment”. A rudimentary investigation of PETA by the AJC would reveal that PETA members have killed , sorry euthanized, more dogs than Vick and also that perhaps hundreds of NFL players have viewed or participated in dog fights. Remember Dallas’ Nate Newton?

Personally, I’m happy he’s reinstated. I’m curious to see what happen to the people year’s down the line when they really don’t have anything left to be angry about. Most people have moved on, but some people haven’t…Take a look around, Vick is slowly turning into a sympathetic person and so the “piling” on thing does nothing to him but make folks like PETA look even more ridiculous everyday.

Would the NFL hire a convicted felon to clean the offices in their headquarters? I don’t know the answer, just posing the question. I would guess they would not, and such a hire would have zero publicity consequences. As popular as the NFL is right now, pets, especially dogs, are far more important to far many more people. (Watch and see what business suffers more during the recession;it damn sure won’t be the pet industry). Any team that signs Vick is going suffer, at least from an image standpoint.

I just watched the live news with Goodell. I am not mad at him, because he gave a compassionate statement about Michael, and realizes that he convinced him that he remorseful and needs to build a life in football and society. I have prayed everyday that people, fans or not would look at the whole picture in regards to his future in life. Please get the hate out of your comments. If you on a personal level do not want to see him play then don’t watch him. It’s as simple as that! And far as PETA is concerned, Vick pay for his crime and they need a new poster platform. Tell them it’s over and they cannot hurt him anymore. The commissioner has forgiven him for showing remorse for what he did. I will continue to pray for Vick, because I know that prayers conquers hate!

I was laughing my you know what off. I was thinking “man I sure hope I go to the NFC South”!

If he were a convicted rapist, there would be no NFL discussion because he’d still be in prison, probably for at least 8 more years.
Most felons struggle to find ANY job; why does Vick have the right play football? Sure, teams have a right to hire him if they choose, but people also have a right to express their outrage and boycott the NFL if they choose. Vick paid his dues. Curious George is taking allegations and very vague rumor and stating them as concrete fact… which is a popular thing to do with celebrities, especially athletes, and more especially black athletes. The mentality is that any character flaw translates into a horrible person… when the fact is people generally have more specific weaknesses to their character. Meaning if a man fights dogs that doesn’t mean he also molests children.

This is stupid. To hell with PETA–fighting dogs is not the same as assaulting other human beings, hitting girlfriends and ho’s, or even infidelity to one’s wife, all of which REAL moral corruptions are regrettably too common among players who are routinely lauded as “great men” and it’s such a shame that the unfaithful whoremonger got shot by his ho-bag family-destroying girlfriend, meanwhile Vick is treated as though he were 2 shades from Lucifer himself for fighting dogs–which, while deserving of proper treatment, are not deserving of the esteem of a human life and a human relationship. Give me a break, Goodell–and Mark, you media types aren’t much better, joining in the harumph over a little dogfighting while coddling violent offenders and philandering perverts as just being under a lot of stress–all because they happen to be decent at catching a stitched up piece of leather with air blown into it. I’m an avid athlete, but I will be glad when our obsession with pro sports ends–and it will.

Mark,
It honestly makes perfect sense to me…true Goodell enjoys flexing his muscles, but that is what the NFL needs! There were too many Plaxico/Pac-Man type things happening in the NFL. I really do think that years from now, the Commish will be looked upon in a very positive light, as one who “straightnened out” the NFL.
It makes sense to go ahead & let him practice, b/c if they didn’t, along with the suspension, he would not be physically ready when it was go time. And Goodell wants no media circus with PETA on opening day of NFL play. Plus, just b/c he went 23 months in Leavenworth doesn’t mean he has changed…it makes sense to see if he can “fly straight” for a few months & if so…let her rip tater chip!!

This ruling reminds me of the movie Cool Hand Luke. The Boss (the NFL commish)works non-stop to break the spirit of the offending Luke (Vick). He never lets up on Luke no matter how contrite Luke may or may not be. So at some point, Luke sees this and finally says, “whatever”! It doesn’t look like we are trying to rehabilitate anyone here.
When in our society will we start telling an offender up front that you pay your debt a certain way (fines, prison, defined length of suspension) and then IT’s OVER!!
Looks like the commish has lots in common with his refs. He missed this call.

Jen – Kids are a catch all. Like the bible. You need a reason to discriminate or be unfair or just being self-righteous, use kids or the bible, and most people fall in line and feel like moral giants. Your statement by definition assumes that Vick is the worst person currently in the NFL. He is most certainly not.
The interesting thing about Vick and Eli’s stats being similar is not so much that they are the same caliber of player, it’s more of a “debunking” the one statistic used to prove that Vick is the worst QB ever, as it is popular to believe. Fact is, Vick was much more than adequate, and still stands as, whether you like it or not, the best Falcon QB ever. More wins than Chandler, fewer losses. And don’t get it twisted, because I prefer Matt Ryan to Michael Vick, but he’ll have to play at least three years, and win a playoff game or two, to be comparable.

It must be hard coming from the little boy that couldn’t, talking about the little boy that can ! Michael Vick made, and will make the Nfl so much money in the past, and future. Peta who consistently picks on this young man, but won’t report on the slaughtering of the dogs from the Idatrod, the Greyhounds in Ala, and Fla racing, or the massacre of the horses after they are deemed not to be fit for racing. This has taken on a life of it’s own, and whether “most” want to admit it or not, has a lot of racial undertones to it. To all you cry babies out there who are crying about Vick having numerous women, having a fast life style and all the other “bull$h!t that you can think about, ask yourself how is that relevant ? This is Reality, if we must get down to the facts: 1 Without the M. Vicks, and T.O’s in the NFL, this league wouldn’t be worth a damn! Fact #2 Stars, whether in Hollywood, NBA, or the NFL get certain privileages others are gonna get, Last and not least, ask how many WHITE COACHES, whether NFL, or NCAA have kept there families feed because of these BLACK ATHELETES. So when you say this guy or that guy should be banned, think, and get the facts before judging. Because I can Guarantee you the NFL isn’t bringing M.Vick back because they love him. This is a business decision just like it was for another MIKE…If you forgot his last name, it’s TYSON. where boxing made well over 450 million dollars in his return, and that’s without jersey’s, games every week in the fall, and commercials every 15 minutes.

Mark you are very wrong on this one I believe. The 23 months Vick has spent on suspension do not really count – he was in Federal prison & could not play anyway. Now he is out & the NFL has to do something to punish Vick for desecrating the league & telling the Falcons owner & the NFL Commissioner bald faced lies as he looked them in the eye.
I believe he got off light. I would have suspended him for the entire 2009 season. One must be accountable for one’s actions.

If Michael Vick had no previous history of problems, and if his conviction didn’t involve gambling, I expect he’d already be on the squad in Jacksonville (more on that in a sec.).
But he had ‘Pac-Man Light” issues, some of which we surely don’t know about (see the rules involving the NFL drug policy). And he was involved with illegal gambling, which even though it had nothing to do with the NFL, it’s still gambling. That makes folks who run leagues a bit testy.
Add to that the fact that he was already having issues with the media over his declining passing numbers, the whole ‘athletic quarterback – code for black quarterback’ issue (which I believe to be a valid point btw), and the aftermath of his incarceration, and I believe that the Commish is doing him a favor.
He’s gonna be under a HUGE microscope after he joins a team. “What did he eat, who did he eat it with, where did he eat it…”. If he’s got a pre-disposition to be affected by media scrutiny (which he has), then they’re trying to lessen the OJ-like confluence of media at the beginning of the two season starts (pre and regular seasons) to give him a fair shot. He deserves that. Who knows? It might have been the psychologist’s ideas (you know, the ones the league hired to test him that said he needed further counseling).
Also: who in the NFL that could be interested in him (like, say, Jacksonville – the closest franchise to Atlanta fans that still wear #7) wants to get the sideshow that will follow him? The folks complaining most about this verdict may in fact be the media – since it makes it tougher to make The Mike Vick Story a 24/7 cycle if there’s a 2-6 week gap in there.

Mark – You make some good points. However, I think Vick MIGHT be a high risk. The point is neither you, I, nor Goodell know. Maybe he’s truly learned his lesson, maybe he has not. The weakest part of the commissioner’s conditional reinstatement is that we still may not know by the end of September. I’m reasonably sure he can keep his act together until then. Personally, I would reinstate him with one condition, to wit: keep your nose clean or you’re gone for good.

I believe also that Goodell missed his mark with this ruling. How can you punish a person who has already been suspended and inturn kick him some more by not allowing the guy to play until after a week 6 review? What happened to the days when you got into trouble served your time and try to reitergrate back into society. How can you do that without a job? This crazy idea of the commish will severly hurt vicks chances to get onto another football squad. I guess double jerpardy does not apply to the commisioner, huh? Cedrick, as a reminder, working for any company, ANY company is a privilidge and not a right. He still has the right to go out and make money. I suppose that education that VT was paying for should have been taken advantage of. If he had been an accidental offender (as in not knowing the laws), I could totally see him being reinstated right now. But Vick did personally kill animals and knew that dogfighting was illegal (remember the kill houses painted black). That means he was actively and willfully engaging in horrible acts towards animals. That warrants the NFL holding him out for a period of time, beyond his jail time. He should be thanking his lucky stars that he’s been back. If I had served time and had a felony record, I wouldn’t be allowed to return to my company. The NFL gets to decide who deserves to work for them. Key word: Deserves.

Vick could not be a WR, RB, or KR. He did, however, have a 38-28-1 record as a QB. As for the idiot who claims Vick hasn’t been “held accountable”… Grow up. You’re the kind of man who gets your rocks off by punishing someone who has done wrong. Vick has paid his debt to society, that includes you. Frank, what you don’t get is that Mark knows Vick and knows much more about him than you do. He also knows that dogfighting isn’t a character flaw… in the sense that the average man is not going to get up and find he’s tempted to fight dogs. I think Michael Vick will have a good (not great) career in the league and he will be forgiven once he is a part of a winning team. He may be a “Slash” type for the rest of his career. It will be tough at first to deal with animal rights groups and/or fans who have always lived their lives through the entertainers they watch (kinda sad if you really think about it). And the same fans that hate him will be drowned out by the new and old Vick fans and the NFL marketing machine that will embrace him for bringing wins and revenue. Why is he still big news in Atlanta? The Falcons released him. They have another QB now. Vick didn’t go to school here, isn’t from here, and no longer plays here. So why should I give a big flying rip where he winds up, or if he plays at all? Because he has a house in Sugarloaf? Why is the AJC (and ESPN) still obsessed with his story? Could you spend a little more time discussing players who are on a team and scheduled to play instead of the soap operas (Vick, Favre, etc.)? I’m tired of it. There are tons of players you could talk about who actually will be on the field when the season starts. How about focusing on them for a change.

Well, to answer my own questions, it’s not about ballgames or winning any more but celebrity drama. Earlier today, AJC had a headline on Terrell Owens weighing in on Vick. Who cares what that washed-up loudmouth thinks about anything? Apparently the Bills now are on the radar because they have that diva. It’s TO this, and Romo says this about TO, then Romo dumps his hot model girlfriend, and Brady marries his, and Favre might want to play, and OchoCinco might show up for camp, yadda, yadda. It’s like a teen-age girl’s diary. I like men’s sports, played hard by real men, played to win, not just to show off for the cameras. I don’t care about the drama queens preening for attention or the endless celebrity worship that the TV networks and others seem obsessed with. Vick, to me, is totally irrelevant until he lands a job and actually has a football in his hand in a real game that counts. Until then, he is a non-story.

Vick doesn’t own squat. Considering how much he’s in debt and how much money he gave up for his idiotic behavior, he might not own the clothes he wears. I enjoyed watching him when he played for the Falcons. He’s gone now and they have another guy. Time to move on. Once you stop playing for the club, you become irrelevant. It’s about the game, not the personalities. Unless you prefer the side drama to the real ballgames, in which case you’re not a real sports fan, and quite possibly, a woman. And for those of you who blog in all caps and can’t conjugate verbs, possibly on meth.

There are so many haters, bigots, bitter, angry people on this blog, its actually quite amusing. Again, for the record PETA is a bunch of lying hypocrites with hidden agendas and a monumental waste of organizational space. Further more, everyone still on that he should never be forgiven kick need to remember, THEY ARE DOGS, ANIMALS. I don’t care how many cute little outfits you buy, How many pictures you take, How many kisses to the mouth, How many this is my substitute for a kid, you affiliate them with, they are still DOGS.
Honestly, there are some PEOPLE who shouldn’t be walking the earth, but that’s not my call. Mike Vick has done his time, according to the same LAW these firebreathing, hide behind a keyboard, cowards went out of their way (ancestrally until today) to ensure punish the supposed guilty. He is now out and able to resume his life. Problem is there are still far too many who want the life of any minority to be lived out in servitude to those “far superior” to them. Well, get over it. There will be a team, who will understand the BUSINESS of football and not worry about the azzkissing politics of it and sign Mr. Vick.
For those that don’t like it..don’t watch it, return your tickets, choose a new sport, but above all else SHUT THE HELL UP and keep it moving, because contrary to what you think, life does go on and the world does continue to turn without you. I wish Mr. Vick nothing but the best, and oh by the way for all of you wishing his injury, death, unemployment, jail time again…keep in mind what you send out and is what you get back…like they say KARMA IS A BEEYOTCH….

Well Leonard Little still plays in the NFL and he’s killed an actual human being. Some of you people are really sick or you have underlying reasons for continuing to bash Vick that you just don’t want to come out and say.I have been a falcon fan since the days of Billie White shoes Johnson and I will always have a bittersweet memory of this young man….on the one hand I was disappointed in the kid for what he did… the way greyhounds and horses are euthanized after they are no longer fit for racing is not much different than dogfighting in my book except for the one thing that matters most…they are legal..the fact that he should have known better than do something illegal considering who he was disappointed me more than the crime.Yet he seemed like a good kid, everyone who knew him seem to feel that way so I take em at their word.He was a damn good player for the falcons though… I paid for season tickets just to see him live and those memories were very sweet.Sure Goodell piled it on him…he’s the “tough guy” commish…he has to live up to his rep and all.but it is what it is so that being said…Good luck to young Mike..I truly wish him the best for his life as well as his career.

not surprised to see mick vick get back into the nfl at some point. the professional athletes can get away with anything. maybe do a little time an get back to work. just ask ray lewis and pacman jones. even through pacman is out for good now. i do believe people need second chances sometimes. however i dont believe they should be allowed to sign a huge contract, instead let them play at the leagues minimum salary for a couple of years and see if in fact they have learned there lesson. after 2-3 years with zero incidents they would be allowed to sign whatever contract a team is willing to offer. This way the team is protected from being screwed if the player gets caught doing something bad again.

Not being able to play until week 3 of the preseason and week 6 of the NFL season is actually a good thing for MV7. He is such a competitive person and so eager to get back into the league he would probably rush himself and whatever team picks him up may feel pressured to rush him back before he is ready. MV7 is lucky to be back in the league, so he has to humble himself to whatever punishment Goodell gives him. Goodell also knows that it would not be good for the NFL for Vick to go to the upstart league. I believe that the UFL season starts in October so having Vick being eligible to play around that same time would put even more spotlight on the NFL and less on the UFL. Also MV7 jersey will be a big seller once he signs with a team. I know I am going to buy one. If MV7 was not still marketable know one would care about him one way or the other. “If it don’t make dollars then it don’t make sense”, plain and simple, money green is the only color that truly matters in this country. I also believe that the Redskins will sign him, perfect situation for MV7.

I can think of a couple of WR playing for the Falcons who are privately grateful that Vick isn’t their QB, especially when it’s contract time. If your boss is Arthur Blank not good . But If someone had a valuable skill set & my boss could hire him on the cheap , he would hire him in a heartbeat even if he was a felon . If he doesn’t work out you cut him loose . As a boss it is a no brainer . If you could use those his skills his upside is through the roof . If he doesn’t live up to the responsibilities set forth by the NFL , you cut bait . You can always say you gave him a chance .If he pans out it was a good investment . The risk/reward for what he will be paid IMO will be worth it if a franchise could use someone with his talents .

We all know that some owner will pay Michael Vick the money, maybe not the NFL money but he would still be rich and not have to deal with the political bullshit that is the NFL. I have seen murder, wife beater, crack heads, steroid users none of which michael vick did. Michael Vick got lock up for fighting a dog that was bread to fight since its existence by who the white man! What Michael is really guilty of is stupidity for betting with people who only had 10,000 dollars when his has millions, they were never in his economic class at all. So I say to Michael if you are reading this go ahead an leave an make a name for yourself in that new league and people will still watch you play I promise you that.

What’s the point of the judical/penal system? You supposely “pay your debt to society”, but that’s has never been enough. I agree that the commissioner is just piling on. As much as I hate to say it, this whole “personal conduct” bull is partially the players fault. Why would the NFLPA basically give away vital issues such as suspensions, discipline, etc. to one man? I like animals, but I personaly have an issue with animals have more right than human. Way to go PETA, Way to keep applying that pressure to keep unemployment numbers up by one for at least 2 more months. Thanks alot, NOT. Good Article. Logical. Goodelll is an outrage. He speaks as if Vick was convicted of a sex crime and needs to “reintegrate” and demonstrate that he is not a recidivist. This total nonsense. He has had two years to consider the conduct that got him in trouble. The NFL currently has convicts, wifebeaters, drunk drivers ,drug dealers and drug users. please stop speaking that Vick did something more than Dogfighting. Why did Goodell have to have a press conference about this anyway. This is totally ridiculous. Terrell Owens was right in two respects. Goodell need not add onto this punishment. AND more players needs to speak up about the continued vilification of Vick. Let hm play.

Good article Mr. Bradley. What gets me is that Goodell thinks he’s God. This man deserves another chance. This condition that has been placed on him is ridiculous. Let the man get back to playing football. People have done far worse and has been forgiven (i.e. the hockey player that drove drunk and decapitated his friend, he was forgiven and all was well). This was a freakin dog. I don’t condone what he did but I think I value a human life more than some dog. People (mostly PETA) are running this in the ground. Stop being so judgemental and try forgiveness. I’m sure Goodell has lied as well as many of you. So what. As long as he has learned (which I’m sure he has esp after losing so much) from what he did, he should be allowed to go on with his life and not have to answer for this the rest of his life. Good luck Mike, I wish you all the best!

Mark, I’m curious to know, is there any precedent behind Goodell’s ruling? Did Jamal Lewis have to sit out AFTER he came out of the half-way house? (I know that wasn’t Goodell, but it would be a situation to look at). Also, didn’t Leonard Little spend some time in prison? (He certainly should have). Was he reinstated immediately? I don’t know the answers to these, but they could provide a precedent.
I guess I’m ok with a suspension if Lewis also had one. Their crimes are different, but they both embarrassed the league. If Lewis was not suspended after he left prison, however, I don’t see why Vick should be.
Also, as has been said, the “we’ll evaluate after the first 5 weeks of the season” thing is utterly ridiculous. Grow a pair and make a call one way or the other.

Good Grief . Yes Michael Vick went to prison . He served his sentence for his dog fighting ring to society . To think that he doesn’t have to be punished for gambling & lying about his dog activities to the Falcons brass & Roger Goodell is silly . For his dishonesty & damage he caused to the Falcons & NFL in general , Michael Vick is getting off fairly easy . If he doesn’t screw up he will be playing in early October . That time will be here short enough . Just enough time to show he has cleaned up his act & is living up to his obligations the NFL has put in place . Also enough time for Michael Vick to get in game shape & learn a play book . This is a more than fair ruling . Roger Goodell got this one right .

Let me begin by saying that I’m not a Michael Vick fan, never have been and didn’t want the Falcons to draft him. I’m also a dog lover and have had dogs since I was a small child. However, I’m far more concerned about wife/girl friend abusers and child molesters than I am about dog fighting. Athletes beat up their wife/girl friend and in a couple of weeks, all is forgotten. A 26 year old Olympic track star can be caught (not alleged) having sex with a 15 year old girl (on two occasions with two different 15 year olds) and all is somehow forgotten and forgiven. He’s even going into the Georgia Tech Sports Hall of Fame. Must be a new twist on the “Total Person” program at Tech. At least Michael Vick served his time in prison. Now give him a chance to prove himself as a new person.

The League of Second Chances Has Officially relinquished its crown.
Pro-football players are not the titanesque orthicons that NFL Commissioner Roger Goddell would seem to expect. None are necessarily destined for canonization upon the signing of their first multi-million dollar contract. They are unfortunately more mortal than bellerophon. They are merely entertainers and not iconic heroes. They are at their core; human. Yet, the expectations for the professional athlete off the field have moved from difficult toward simply unattainable. Meanwhile the NFL, once a microcosm of America with its propensity to absolve the rueful, has become an iron fist under which the slightest misstep can be the difference between prosperity and irrevocable ruin.
The league where the Leonard Littles and Ray Lewises of the world get away with manslaughter; has become the league where Michael Vick gets an additional four game suspension after spending 23 months away from his chosen profession. Roger Goddell is clearly a Marxist and I would be surprised if the FEDS have not begun investigating him. How can you have so much hatred for the players that make the league possible? Just doesn’t make sense.

Mr Phil , you use some big words . It is evident that you like book readin & such . As far as Roger Goodell being Marxist , the NFL at its core is marxist . It has been for awhile now . Thus you have a salary cap & total revenue sharing . As far as Ray Lewis goes , he never was guilty of any crime . Leonard Little should have been punished . Most everyone agrees with that . Now Mr Phil , the commissioner doesn’t have the league . He will , it would appear , punish you if you lie to him or bring disgrace to the league . Is that not just ? When you consider he was involved in gambling as well you can make a case that Michael Vick was treated leniently . Take care . I have to google bellerophon . Even my firefox spell check doesn’t recognize that word .

Phoenix Falcon, he wouldn’t have went to jail, he would have gone to jail. Does that clear things up for you? You race baiters on both sides of the color barrier suck. Fiercely! And I love the altruism crap. “What about the people who are accused but haven’t been caught doing things?” Well, dummies, THEY HAVEN”T BEEN CAUGHT! WHEN THEY ARE, HANG ‘EM HIGH, I SAY! And Eman, I mean really? Respect all cultures is something I agree with, but then you follow it up with “since your not black, you wouldn’t understand.” Nice example of respect for all cultures, my man. Please don’t try to mentor any youths. The world is confusing enough as it is.

The word “thug” was not invented for, nor is it exclusively used to represent, a person of African descent (nor should it be). I personally became aware of the word as a child, and old Jimmy Cagney movies or documentaries on mob killings like ‘The St. Valentines Day Massacre’ would use the word quite frequently. Not one person of color in any of these programs. If you are offended by the perception that the word is exclusive to black gangsters, then you have given your enemy a useful weapon that they didn’t previously have. Be smart, and don’t fall bait to trigger words.

How could anyone support such a horrible person? He’s just as slimy and evil as a cold-blooded murderer. I’ve been a Falcon’s fan for years but them reinstating this man turns my stomach. There is an amazing pool of gifted athletes that can outshine this nasty scum of the earth. Why did the Falcon’s lower their standards with even speaking with him, much less reinstating him?
I will never purchase another ticket to see my favorite team play if he is on the field. I pray many others will do the same.

Debbie are pro choice or pro life? I guarantee you that dog fighting .while disgusting. is not even close to being as evil as a cold blooded murderer like an abortionist. Those are the people you should vent your rage on. Now if you are pro choice then I am wasting my words on you because you are or support the child killers while hating dog abusers more. If you are pro life then you are right to not like vick but put it in perspective with the murdering of children. GOD BLESS YOU.

I am a retired soldier that spent time in South Korea in the early seventies and ninties. There I witness American soldiers eating dog meat. I just hope none of these guys out there, and you know who you are, dont have reason to condemm this man. Not one of those dogs that you sat there an ate was living. Am sure these guys would not have forgotten their morals and values just because they’re in another country. So dont try and use that excuse.

Back in the 70’s Chuck Noll allowed the general public to vote for the Steeler’s starting QB. Joe Jefferson was playing very well. One problem, he was black. There are some who believe as Jimmy the Greek in that blacks lack the necessities to play QB. There are others who STILL believe that QB should be reserved for whites. The position itself is the most glamorous. Enter Mike Vike…He became the very first reason for people to denegrate a black QB. He gave you exactly what you wanted all along. This crusade of hatred doesn’t involve cruelty to dogs. It’s just your chance to say: I told you so.

Vick should have had a lifetime ban, no question. If you want to write to the commissioner and tell him what you think— NFL Headquarters, Mr. Peter Goodell, 280 Park Ave. 15th Floor, New York, New York. 10017. If a team does sign him, I plan on writing and calling the CEO’s of their corporate sponsors to protest Vick, every day if needed. I will also post the said CEO’s name and addresses on any animal rights groups web-sites, that I can find asking others to protest Vick’s return to the NFL.

I disagree with the commish’s decision. The man has paid his price to society regardless of how you feel about his crime, BUT the decision was made to protect any club he signs with from the distractions that come with signing him. It’s the start of camp and a team needs to get down to work and not be distracted AND it’s best for Vick, it will make it easier for him in the long run, it’s all PR and BS, I guarantee behind the scenes this was orchastrated with all involved. Why else did they float the idea of reinstated him with a possible 2-6 suspension.WHERE was the players union on Vicks behalf And other players…

He’s lucky to play at all, with the brutality he oversaw: Rape stations for dogs, slamming dogs against a wall, to the point of death if they underperformed, and many more violations. He’s another idiot that had the world at his feet, and thought he was above it.

So Vick did his time… he needed more of it.
His crimes were despicable. So he’s a free man – does that mean he should play again in the NFL – NO, NEVER. He doesn’t deserve a second chance. Did those poor animals get a second chance, the ones that died at his hands? The ones that had to be euthanized? No they didn’t. And he shouldn’t either.
The NFL doesn’t need him and shame on them for doing this to their fans.

To the one calling himself Pulleeze. The Steelers were the laughing stock of the league until they drafted that Bradshaw dude. Puhleez! As a youngster I enjoyed watching James Harris of the Rams, Doug Williams of Tampa, and Warren Moon wherever he was needed (what a competitor, and a real savvy gamer, too). Michael Vick is as blessed with raw talent (or more so) as any of these great players. However, he never has demonstrated the leadership, both on and of the field, as any of the great men that I mentioned. Yet somehow these gridiron heroes met with success while overcoming a great deal more racism than Vick has ever seen, and did so through leadership and integrity. These men inspired not so great players around them to play ABOVE their abilities. Vick did not. As a matter of fact, he only played UP TO his own (awesome) abilities. There is no way he has or ever will be able to compare to these great players when it comes to quarterbacking an NFL team, talent or no talent. I do wish him well though. And I hope he gets a chance to prove me wrong. So let’s take a look at your silly statement.

I’m a pet lover! I believe that if u do the crime, u should do the time. He’s done his time, now it’s showtime. Let him play!! I am sick of this. I am also sick of some of yall response on here!!! Let he who is without sin cast the 1st stone!! Since everyone (including me) has sinned, there isn’t much we can do but forgive and move on!! God will handle Mr. Vick. But you know what will be very funny?? People that keep complaining about this and making neg comments like “I hope to God he breaks his neck” yall need to watch yall neck. God is watching and hears all of that!!
Go Vick!! I pray that u stay on the right track!! I don’t care if I am the only supporter or if u play for the Canadian league. The NFL already has a bad rep this is before Michael!!!! Do yall homework haters!!!!!

To error is human to forgive is divine. Everyone makes mistakes. Forgive us of our mistakes as we forgive others for their mistakes. Please e-mail me if you haven’t made a mistake and we will honor you.orrin@besomeone.org.
People want other to give them a second chance but they don’t want to give others a second chance. What would Jesus do? Michael Vick I believe is a changed man and deserve a second chance. I developed a program that give people a second chance. http://www.besomeone.org.Thank you Philly for giving Michael Vick a second chance, I will see you in Super Bowl XLIV Dolphin Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida.
