So I’m sitting in my AJC Brainstorming session — it’s Day 1, with two more to come — and I just got, of all things, a brainstorm.
I’m going to the Bulldog Club of Greater Atlanta meeting tonight at the Cobb Galleria, and I’ll be blogging live from it.
A word or two about this particular Bulldog Club gathering: I’ve been to a half-dozen in the quarter-century I’ve worked here, and I always find it educational. Sometimes we as jaded journalists forget just how big college football is in this city, but the Atlanta convocation always serves as my personal reminder.
I’ve seen all four Georgia football coaches of my quarter-century — Dooley, Goff, Donnan and Richt — appear at this meeting, and the dynamic has always been fascinating. Dooley was revered; Goff was liked but not respected; Donnan was respected but not particularly liked; Richt is both respected and liked.
I was there the night Richt, coming off the 2002 SEC championship, yielded the final spot in the speaking order to Dooley, who was then waging his fight against Michael Adams, who wasn’t present. I was there the night when Chuck Knapp quoted my underwhelmed description of his public barking the year before and proceeded to loose a more forceful yelp. I once went out to eat with Goff — at Mick’s, as I recall — after he appeared before the Atlanta Bulldog Club, and he amused himself by calling my wife from his car phone. (Car phones were then fairly new.)
And I’ll be there tonight, and I’ll start blogging around 6:45 — program starts at 7 — so y’all tune in, please. I won’t bark myself, but I’m guessing a few other folks will.

I think it was the 2003 meeting where Billy Payne said to Richt, “I thought you’d gotten through your issues with clock management.”

We’ll be glad to have you there with us again tonight. We wouldn’t expect Bark Madley to be anywhere else.

Off topic, but since the current topic is a little soft, here’s my prediction: Vick will sign with the Panthers.

I think it’s open to all comers, but I could be wrong. (Nobody’s ever thrown me out for being a UK grad.)
And Wondering, there are usually a few thousand folks at these things, but I haven’t been to one at the Galleria. The ones I attended were at the Sheraton Colony Square.

I imagine it’s over in the convention center part of the Galleria. And don’t take my say-so as the final word. But in my experience I’ve never seen anyone being checked for a UGA alumni card at these shindigs.

Don’t go to the Gator Club rally where Pope Urban is tolerated and not liked, or to the Yellow Jackets rally where they flap their arms and just buzz like bees and Paul Johnson is liked this year, but not next. Or to the Vols rally where they just just clog to Rocky Top and don’t much like Lane Kiffin or his daddy and know what a disaster this season will be. Or the Awbarn rally where they are still learning to pronounce their coach’s name before they decide whether ot not they like him. Yeah, it’s that time of year where toe is about to meet leather!

Where does Tech have their annual meeting? At a Subway on Roswell Road? Show up and you get several “complimentary” tickets for the upcoming season?
