Today we present something new on the ol’ MB blog: A post written by someone other than MB. (For many of you, this will represent the best development yet.) Our first Guest Blogger is Matthew Harrison, who won the right to write by answering a trivia question that turned out not to be so trivial. He grew up in Atlanta and lives in Midlothian, Va. He started going to Georgia Tech games at age 5 with his grandfather, who had season tickets.
Matthew’s two favorite things regarding Tech games: “Before the games we would sometimes go to Krystal [or the Varsity]. I remember how excited I was when I could finally eat 2 Krystals! Another thing that was neat? I got to say a bad word at the Tech games with my grandfather. ‘Helluva engineer’ — love that fight song!”
As was part of the guest-blogging arrangement, Matthew got to pick his topic. And here, by golly, it is:
In 1990, gas was $1.16 a gallon; “Murphy Brown,” “L.A. Law and “Northern Exposure” were on TV and the top movies were “Dances with Wolves” and “Goodfellas.” In the fall of that year, Scott Sisson kicked a field goal with seven seconds left to lift Georgia Tech over then No. 1 Virginia. That was the last time the Yellow Jackets beat Virginia in Charlottesville. That’s a long streak, and one that will come to an end this year.
There are several reasons why Tech will beat Virginia:
• UVA will be running a new offense this year — a spread (I guess imitation is the sincerest form of flattery) and Jameel Sewell, the projected starting quarterback, has not played in a year because he was not in school last season. He has to get back into playing shape while he learns a new system under a new offensive coordinator. So the area that is the one question mark for Tech — the defensive line — should see an offense that is a pale imitation of what it’s used to seeing in practice. That also means, hopefully, that Coach Paul Johnson and Coach Dave Wommack will be better equipped to defend against this offense.
• Three starting Virginia linebackers completed their eligibility, so if Tech can keep the Cavaliers guessing, they should be able to run the ball into the secondary.
• Tech has had a year to grow with this offense and Paul Johnson has said that he will be throwing the ball more. Virginia’s secondary is young with one senior starter, so that will also be an advantage for the Yellow Jackets. The one question mark will be Tech’s offensive line especially since it lost both starting tackles. Let’s hope Dan Voss at center is healthy.
• The biggest reason is this: Coach Johnson plays to win, as opposed to Chan Gailey playing not to lose. I was at the game in 2007, and Tech had plenty of chances to win. After taking a three-point lead, it began to play conservative football and that ended up contributing to the loss. I am aware Tech lost to Virginia last year in Atlanta under Coach Johnson. Cedric Peerman had a big day, rushing for 118 yards; Mikell Simpson, the tailback slated to replace him, gained 262 yards all last season.
Virginia is a struggling program that really should not have won last year. Tech is a contender in the conference, while UVA will finish with five wins. Al Groh is on the hot seat while Tech has its coach for the future.
There will be two streaks broken in 2009. The Atlanta Falcons will finally have consecutive winning seasons, and Georgia Tech will finally beat the Cavaliers in Charlottesville.

It’s true that Johnson had little of his passing game in last year, so watch out for an exciting offense to blossom.

Wish a dawgs fan had gotten the chance to write something. AJC.com is the only place I ever have to deal with pointless articles about GT. No one outside of Atlanta cares about Tech. At least UGA is starting to build up its national brand to the same level as USC and Texas. Tech fans are some of the worst in college football…they lose 7 straight to UGA and then win one and suddently its time to get the old tech sweater out of the closet. Awful fans.
A Falcons article would have been welcome as well. Tech? Nah…I’m good.

matthew pretty cool. i did the same thing with my grandfather, only i started at the age of 5 in 1955. he had seats among old tech grads who played football, right off the cinder track you walked on to get to the seats on the 46 yd line. spoiled me for life. best game ever? when tech beat namath and bama in his first visit to grant field. we werent so lucky the next time even though he had a brace on his leg and played one quarter. i think we were down quickly 24-zip. my grandfather also played for john heisman on the tech team that won 222-0. i have somehow learned that uga isnt so bad but it took a long time. thanks for the memory trip.

If I had of gotten the chance to write an article, I would have actually done some research. Maybe try and get a national perspective on UGA. How do college football fans in Texas or California perceive the dawgs? New York? Oregon? Maybe I would have written about whether or not the Falcons D will keep them from making a deep playoff run. GT vs Virginia? Who cares?

While the SEC/UGA homers comments are childish, sub-literate, and annoying, there’s much truth to GT vs. UVA being “irrlevant” – it shouldn’t be relevant.
GT needs to start beating all the teams they are “supposed” to beat – stop having the lapses against UVA, NCSU, Duke, etc.
This year’s edition – JSU, Clemson, MSU, UVA, WF, Vandy, Duke.
Losses to any of these teams will be a disappointment (like UVA last year).
Sweep these + 2-3 split with the rest = good season. (3-2 split or more = great season)

Hello, we’re ranked ahead of you……but wait let’s not just use that as a justification because we see how you all played against Alabama, Florida, and oh could it be the Tech triple option. You saw it all year and still couldn’t prepare for it. Tech is better all around. UGA may be good at sports, but so is Tech and that’s not our only claim to fame like UGA. ahope3, I haven’t gotten in a true debate with a Tech fan in years, and I don’t plan on doing it today. Reason being: One stat – 7-1. UGA’s record against Tech in the last 8 years. That isn’t a rivalry by my standards, and so the fact that UGA slipped up in Athens right before my eyes last fall doesn’t bother me as much as losing to Florida or Bama. You don’t support either of those teams, so we have no reason to debate.
In terms of UGA and GT as institutions…I’m a student at UGA and I wouldn’t trade my experience there for any other school in the country. I’m getting a first rate education thanks to the HOPE scholarship making UGA very competitive in terms of academics over the last 10 years. The nightlife in Athens is outstands (much better than Atlanta where you face cover charges and annoying Atlantans). UGA is a dream school for me and about 30,000 other students. Who would want to live in dirty Atlanta and go to Tech? Not me. I’ll graduate with a degree from UGA and go on to make just as much as a Techie would.

ahope3- early years of existence? Ok. That speaks to the historical nature of the rivalry, which is obviously there. We are in 2009, lets talk this decade.
Also, I realize Tech students make more on average. That’s obvious. Most tech students are engineers. I just know that personally, I’ll be making just as much and with the classes I’m taking, I’m getting just a as good, if not better, education than I would at tech.
Most students my age (21) prefer Athens to Atlanta. Why is Athens consistently ranked in the top 10 college towns in America and Tech is not? Because Athens nightlife is amazing. Atlanta is a fun scene too every once in awhile, but I’d hate to make it a regular thing.

STARTING being the operative word. Sure, people know who you are. I knew about GT while I was still living in Texas, but seriously now, I’d say the brand is about at the level of Tennesee, Auburn, etc. (other SEC teams…NOT yet the same as a USC or Texas). Which brings me to another laugher, there is a sign I passed in Smyrna this morning ADVERTISING Auburn football. It’s got a hand gloriously holding up an AU football helmet and it says “Choose Auburn”…for what? Not to go to school, but to..what…CHEER FOR? Come on! I mean, I guess it’d make sense in Alabama, but this is a school that’s not even in our state…and is not projected to do that well this year. It’s just begging.

Thanks for the column – nice to see a GT article even with the deluge of UGA comments that follow. Mark – a question for you: is it appropriate from a journalistic standpoint to write in a column (Bill King’s JY Blawg) that you wish to see the “smiles wiped off of Tech fans’ faces”? I have tried to get anyone at the AJC to tell me how/why this is allowed but no reponse. I have not nor never expect to see any columnist say anything remotely similar about the Dawgs.

That’s rich MyWhiskey. And free hot dogs and cokes, AJC pop up ads, mass email campaigns, and halftime Big Boi concerts are NOT begging? Last time I checked Auburn doesn’t have any trouble filling up its seats for football games. There are probably more Atlanta residents at an Auburn game than at a Techie game. Huh,that was pretty incindiary. Do you just live to argue with us?
I guess my knee-jerk answer would be, “well, why does Vandy scare the crap out of UGA every year?” It doesn’t matter how hard the classes are. Tech football players don’t take calculus and neither do UVA players. There’s probably not a school that forces that anymore. And if there were it still wouldn’t matter. It’s college football and even perceived juggernauts fall in divisions with some degree of parity (Ole Miss @ Florida?).
You know this, as does everyone else, so I’m forced to conclude you’re just bored and trying to pick a fight.

@Supes- you ask the last time Tech was nationally- well if numbers are correct 1990 and UGA? 10 years before that. Slice it anyway you want- 10+ whatever-some still has NC after you!
@Dawgs–I’m sorry that you have never witnessed your team with a NC and no Gymnastics does not count!
Well I’ll tune back in just to see what you flea bags are whinning about next time….8-4 you mutts will be this year. Maybe even a 7-5. Don’t laugh…and if it happens I want even say I told you so!!!!

Okay, Huh just got the other post. Those are called “ATTRACTIONS”. You add them to the programming to entice fans. In my perception it is NOT the same as placing billboards in low-income areas 300 miles from your school in neighboring states.
Tech playing 2nd fiddle to Auburn, sir? Check out our record with them over the last few games. Speaks for itself.

Tech lost to UVA last year because of UVA’s offensive line. If those guys have graduated(which I think they have) Tech will win.

Pretty sparse analysis considering it didn’t address how CPJ was going to overcome Groh’s 3-4, which completely stifled GT last year. You mentioned the fact that GT is going to throw more. You’d hope so…UVa held Tech to 7 completions last year. Beyond that, and more troubling for Tech, is UVa held Tech’s vaunted rushing attack to 156 yards on a whopping 41 carries. The longest run of the day was 17 yards (apparently they still teach tackling in Charlottesville). Tech does great against coaches who can’t adjust and react on defense (Martinez). But against an NFL-caliber, defensive-minded coach running 4 linebackers? Good luck with that, stingers.
UVa’s problem is their inability to recruit talented skill players on offense. But they’ve always been lights out on defense. Therefore, while UVa won’t score much, they won’t be outfoxed by Tech. UVa will win this yawner 12-7.

Nice job Matthew!Really enjoying your columns Mark; especially the ones with the underlying sarcastic tune – some people take life a tad bit too serious on this blog. Go Jackets!

Nice job, Matthew. It’s obvious you did your research. I prefer someone who makes comments and predictions that is based on factual information. Perhaps the Junkyard Blogger should take notes from Matthew. By the way, I purchased my season tickets. Can’t wait!!

For the record, Huh, I’m admitting the extra benefits our AD seems to hand out to fill our stadium is proof that we aren’t where we need to be, but my point was that what Auburn is doing with those billboards (I’m assuming Smyrna doesn’t have the only one in existence) is outright begging just to grab a market share it doesn’t own or deserve. Putting cool stuff in your own stadium is still above this in my opinion. I blame the firing of T-Tubs and the awkward Chizik situation…or maybe it’s to piss off UGA?

Hey UGA fans—when did the size of the stadium have anything to do with win or lose. If yelling that my stadium is biger than your stadium is all you can come up with your intellect is in question.

To ReggieATL, you must be snorting something if you think UVA will be Tech this year. Gotta be smoking also if you think UVA has any shot of making an impact in the ACC. Tech will SLAUGHTER them and I’ll watch every minute. It’s good to be a HELLUVA ENGINEER.

I live in Missouri, and Tech sports are my biggest interest of any Georgia team – the Braves come in second. Frankly, if you think Atlanta is dirty and boring, then by all means stay away! There’s enough people there that take living there for granted.
And if you want to talk about the 7-1 thing, then why not go back a little further – say 3 years? Then it’s only 7-4. Yeah, UGA still has the lead, but not by much. The point is you can talk about records over whatever years as much as you want, but in the end its all relative, history, and a moot point.

ahope3 – “To huh, there’s actually a Tech billboard in Alabama”
No, it was me (not Huh) raggin’ on AU for doing that here, but I’ll go ahead and admit I stand corrected. The bigger point, though, is whether that billboard is advertising the school (like “come to Tech”) or is advertising Tech football (like Support the Jackets!). The AU one in Smyrna is very football-looking and vague (Choose Auburn). It just made me laugh…I didn’t mean to start all this.

“Tech football players don’t take calculus…”
Whoa!!! Stop the presses!!! Are you aware that a large portion of the Techie fan base, if not a large majority, continue to make the claim that they not only take it but are REQUIRED to take it? Are you calling this segment of the Techie fan base LIARS? A simple yes or no will suffice. Thanks.

MyWhiskeyClear, I knew what I was doing but thanks anyway. The comment was in reference to this
“Last time I checked Auburn doesn’t have any trouble filling up its seats for football games. There are probably more Atlanta residents at an Auburn game than at a Techie game. You’re just jealous because the Joke by Coke is playing second fiddle to a school that isn’t even in this state!!! How pathetic is that? True story.” not your comment correct?

To MyWhiskeyClear, “Tech football players don’t take calculus and neither do UVA players.” They actual do if they are engineering majors. Only if they’re Management do they not have to take Calc

I will say this about UVA. Watching a game there was nice. Pretty setting and stadium, friendly, intelligent people and a great town. Their fans were great to us, even when a player of ours was injured and taken out on a stretcher. All I got leaving the stadium was “Hey, hope your guy recovers” and “Thanks for making the trip up here! Good game!”. Night and day difference from going to a rivalry game. I felt like I was a guest in their home, not a fan of a rival football team. I almost felt dirty singing a fight song there…

If more fans made your team better then Tennessee, SCAR, Mich., Ohio St. and UGa, etc., would dominate. But they are just above average. Tech is just average at present. They could move up if they have a good year. But, their competition is stiff.

Yes, huh, those are liars – SORT OF(either they went to Tech back in the old days, or they never went). ahope3 is right. Engineering majors take calc all the way up to level 3 and then go on to Diff EQ’s. This is the legendary “Tech education” that destroys everyone’s will to live (laughing because I did it). BUT- most GT football and basketball players are in our Business program (named “Management” in this case) or one of our budding liberal arts degrees. These all take several maths like “Finite Math”, “Prob Stat” or *gasp* “SURVEY of Calc.” SO not as hardcore, but still the best -public- business degree in this state (check the academic rankins on business degrees since about ‘05). So they still study hard, but not ENGINEERING hard.
