Having time on its hands in these long hot summer months, ESPN The Magazine has trotted out its annual rankings of professional sports teams (link requires registration) but not so much as competitive teams as corporate entities. To quote from the mag, “Which teams are most worthy of your hard-earned dollar”?
None of our local clubs crack the top 20. The L.A. Angels rank No. 1, and the L.A. Clippers rank 122nd, or dead last. And one of ours finished in triple digits. Guess which.
Tick, tick, tick … time’s up!
27. Atlanta Braves: Attention, Bobby Cox bashers! The Braves receive their highest rating (15th) for coaching. (Er, shouldn’t that be “managing”?) They’re 21st in affordability and a surprisingly high 32nd in “title track.” But they’re only 54th in ownership and 59th in “stadium experience.” What, you mean not everyone’s a sucker for “Thank God I’m a Country Boy”?
43. Atlanta Falcons: The Birds made the largest jump in the rankings. (They were 119th, or third from the basement, last year.) They get their highest ratings for coaching (18th overall) and players (28th), their lowest (90th) for “stadium experience.” Which will give Arthur Blank — who ranks 40th as an owner — all the more reason to go build that new stadium he wants so much.
80. Atlanta Hawks: They have their first winning season in a decade and win their first best-of-seven series since 1971, and they move up six whole spots. Their best rating: Bang for the buck (27th). Their worst: Well, take your pick. They’re 110th in title track, 102nd in coaching, 101st in players and 100th in fan relations. But only 85th in ownership! Helpfully, ESPN quotes one (unnamed) fan as calling Josh Smith “a spoiled kid” and then misuses the word “flied.” (Hint: If it doesn’t have to do with a popup, it’s “flown.”)
108. Atlanta Thrashers: Remember the owners who ranked 85th? They also ranked 120th, which means they must be a heck of a lot worse at owning a hockey club than a basketball team. (According to ESPN, the hockey side of Atlanta Spirit is exceeded in its ineptitude only by the New Jersey Nets and the Phoenix Coyotes.) The Thrash doesn’t rate above 81st in any category, and the No. 81 comes in coaching. Take a bow, John Anderson!

Sometimes the Atlanta paper comes to my house and I don’t even bother to take it out of that little plastic wrapper. More often than not, though, I do unwrap the paper. You can stack those narrow little papers on top of each other, wet ‘em down, and make a pretty nice compost for the garden. I’d rank ‘em about 81 for journalism and give ‘em about 10 for composting.

That new narrow paper makes it just about right for lining shelves. You’d have to trim the old paper if you wanted to line a shelf the right way. My wife and I were talking last night about how practical the new paper has become. What we don’t understand is how the few journalists remaining at the paper could adapt so quickly to writing those narrow little columns. Henry Grady would be proud. Ralph McGill would be ecstatic. Reg and Bill, too. Let’s keep the 81 for journalism and put the new narrow format at around, let’s say 68. I’d give the remaining journalists an 8 for adaptability.

That’s all well and good, but I’d like to see the Falcons sign their two top draft picks, the Hawks move on the free agent front and the Braves start a spurt. The Thrashers? Only time I ever think about them is when I see the word in the AJC … but only in passing.

The compost quote is funny & great, but in fairness, Bradley is only quoting another member of the media (and an electronic one at that). My computer I rate a 10 for range of information available, but 138 for composting. Too much mercury.

No…no I’m not a “sucker for ‘Thank God I’m a Country Boy’” during the 7th inning stretch because the Braves swiped it from the Baltimore Orioles who have been playing it for decades – much like they’ve swiped all of their other “traditions”. Get your own identity!

Why the hell would the Orioles play “Thank god I’m a country boy?” I suppose it’s because of all the farming and cropping in MARYLAND. Just doesn’t make sence. And all teams rip off tradition because there is no such thing as a new idea anymore. Example: Everyone in sports chats, “Nah nah nah nah, nah nah nah nah, hey hey hey, goodbye.” EVERYONE.

It is NO coincidence the Atlanta Falcons took such a huge leap up in the overall rankings.
Once all the “Vick Supporters” stopped coming to the Dome on Sundays after their god was placed in shackles & chains and thrown behind bars, the game day experience of going to Falcons game became more about football and cheering for clean-cut, law-abiding players and much less about FreakNik.
The Falcons may not sell out the Dome any longer without the “Dog Whisperer,” but at least many of us can now safely take our families there without getting an unwanted crash course in debauchery, poor English, rudeness, profanity and drunken stupidity.
Keep Up The Great Work, Falcons!

What a shock. When has Atlanta ever rated highly on these types of lists? Never has and never will. This is a transient town with very little identity. I’d like to see the statistics on how long people stay here. I bet it isn’t more than 3 to 5 years and then they move on with their lives. You can’t build successful pro sports franchises with those kind of demographics. Then there are the increasingly rare natives like myself who grew up watching the Falcons, Hawks, and Braves totally embarrass themselves. We have no tradition to hold on to. The Braves are our best thing going and I’m a fan, but even they can’t ever win the big one. And the Thrashers? Give me a break. Want to hear a funny joke? Here it is: Hockey in Atlanta, Georgia. What a complete waste of time. I said it was a boneheaded idea when that was announced and I was right thank you very much. Hate to be such a Debbie Downer but this is all very much a true story. Good day.

So what if that lady in the green top has big ones, she’s not very much to look at…unless you’re 50. Her friends on either side look ok though. Perhaps I’m just in a younger demographic than what Bradley’s aiming for.
Additionally, I also predict the Falcons will be up in the top 25 next year on the ESPN list after Matt Ryan’s second year. Now that we have a true franchise QB (sorry MV7, I used to love you), we can expect more stability in our record and a better chance of winning year in and year out. Heck, we might even have a second consecutive winning season for the first time ever! Now if we could just get them to move up to that Doraville location, it would be perfect. Go Falcons!

A: Braves are down by 2 with a man on in the bottom of the 11th. What should we play?
B: Hit em with some Gwen Stefani again. That’ll pump up the crowd
And they’ve been ending innings on the same G chord on the oregon for about a decade now. I also noticed how lame everything sounds on that oregon. It’s like church music for old ladies. And did anybody else notice that everytime Jason Bay came up to bat, they played “Sittin on the Dock of the Bay” on that oregon?

Josh complains a lot but not nearly as much as some of the league’s “superstars” when they don’t get their requisite free-throw numbers or get eliminated from the playoffs when Nike & ESPN crowned them champs before the playoffs even start.

The ratings don’t mean much to me. I’m not an Angels fan so I don’t care that they’re #1. And if I were a huge Clippers fan in LA, I’d still probably attend the games or watch on TV even though they were last.
If someone surveyed restaurants where you lived and Sushi Palace was #1 and the Varsity was #122 — it wouldn’t matter much — if you hated sushi and loved gut bombs.

Hockey hasn’t started in Atlanta, and won’t, until the expansion team gets good ownership. Don Waddell has been a ‘caretaker’ GM. Hopefully, one day, Atlanta can begin its journey towards being a team in the NHL that’s really trying to win a Stanley Cup. Until then, it’s just schedule fodder, desperately trying to reach the floor of a salary cap that is truthfully out of its price range, thanks to ‘dubious’ NHL accounting schemes.
Until the Atlanta Spirit, LLC changes its business model, and improves its product, it’s simply not in a position to truly compete with the other teams and markets of the NHL. When the Thrashers get good, they probably will sellout every night, lest the pricing scheme get totally absurd. ($90 for 400 level seating, or some such non-sense.) But a reasonably priced product will sellout the Philips Arena venue, provided that it is a legitimate threat to reach the playoffs and advance deep into those playoffs.

Mark,
You are not alone, the GA Dome is a nice place to see a game. I think it’s just the average fan that brings down the experience of seeing a game at the Dome. Look at old RFK in DC, that place rocked not because of the quality of the teams playing but because of the quality of the fans. Atlanta has by far some of the worst fans I’ve ever encountered, the worst are the ones that complain about a stadium being downtown or in a lower income area. Where do they think stadiums are built? Surely not in ticky tacky suburban areas where SUV’s out number the number of families living in the area.

Don’t know if the Angels deserve #1 but attended a game there on a recent business trip to Anaheim. Over 40,000 turned out on a Wednesday night in April for a game against the Tigers. I wonder if there are 101 coaches in sports who’s teams have improved their records each and every year they have coached the team?
I am so tired of hearing this. Even an imbecile of a coach can ride the wave from thirteen wins on up if he has enough talent at his disposal. And that is just what has happened with the Hawks. If you want a more dramatic and very obvious change due to coaching, look no further than the Falcons who jumped up from downtrodden to one of the better teams in the league in the space of a single season. With less talent and a rookie quarterback no less. It takes Mike Woodson five years to do what Mike Smith does in one. It may be a comparison of apples to oranges, but I’ll say it’s a comparison of rotten apples to ripe oranges.

Braves have been class for a while. Falcons are going to be huge the next several years with Matt Ryan.
Thrashers and Hawks suck (ownership) and until that is fixed, I feel sorry for the players stuck in that organization. There is no plan, no accountability and poor decisions. They lose a fortune on the teams but make it up on the Arena, maybe good for business, and certainly the franchises appreciate over time–but horrible for fans or for winning. The same thing is happening with the Braves to a lesser degree.

I agree with the point; you are suing each other, (Hawks-Thrashers) management and you are not the worse two team in sports. You just have to be last. Hawks maybe below last, if there is such a thing.

“I am so tired of hearing this. It may be a comparison of apples to oranges, but I’ll say it’s a comparison of rotten apples to ripe oranges.”
Sorry an imbecile of a coach cannot improve +10 wins consistently over 5 years. I’m not totally sold on Woodson yet, but give credit where credit is due. What he’s doing with the Hawks right now is awesome and hopefully he can keep it up. What Mike Smith and Dimitroff have done with Falcons is not normal so it’s almost unfair to suggest that because Woodson didn’t do what Mike Smith did, he’s an imbecile. It’s more of a comparison of a standard grocery store apple to a rare high quality top of the line orange.

Here’s another interesting tidbit. Unemployment is near 9%. Mortgage defaults are so prevalent that peolple are renting out empty homes they don’t even own. The average person is hurting, and more focused in providing shelter and food for their families than attending sporting events. Have you missed the devastation reaped upon Atlanta from mortgage fraud? It is truly astounding. The drop in ticket sales is not astounding at all. Nor does it have anything to do with the loss of any idiot athletes.

ESPN only has 12 pro sports teams as less on a title track than the Hawks? That just doesn’t add up.

I am tired of people saying “The Braves have the only champianship in Atlanta”. The Atlanta Chiefs were the 1st. In order of pro sports teams for me it goes like this. Falcons,Hawks,Mets,Red Wings, then Man U.

bigstack19 – Amen. The only thing worse than the unjustifiable arrogance, and poor language skills of many ESPN commentators is the whining we get from some of the AJC sports writers.
woody – I don’t see anyone begging you to stay. If you need help packing your Hefty bag I’m sure we could round up some help and maybe a few donations for your bus ticket back to the pothole capital of the world. Who the crap invited you here in the first place? You think we need your help to get along? Oh gosh and golly how will be make it without you? YOU are why people think damn and yankee are one word.
If Arthur wants a new stadium, then I hope he will have the good sense to build it away from downtown. The Georgia Dome may be a fine venue once you are in it, but having parking for 3,000 and seating for 70,000+ is nonsense. Build a great stadium in Cobb or Gwinnett or North Fulton with adequate parking and allow people to avoid the experience of MARTA. Not only could people drive to and from the game, they could even tailgate. What a radical concept–football & tailgating!

Everyone on here wishing for a stadium in Cobb, Gwinnett, etc. must have forgotten that the team’s name is ATLANTA FALCONS! Keyword: A-T-L-A-N-T-A! That’s why the Braves, Thrashers, Falcons, and Hawks venues are located in A-T-L-A-N-T-A! Get it now!

Don’t like the stadium/venue experience stay home. The game comes on the television. Besides once your team wins you forget all about the one thing that made your experience terrible.

Mz. Hawkdafied,
While the Falcons practice at their Flowery Branch facility, do we have to call them the Flowery Falcons?

Come on Mz Hawkdafied, lets look at some other football teams- NY Jets, Giants- they play in New Jersey. Dallas Cowboys-they played in Irving, now Arlington, TX. Are they not representative of the areas that they play. The Falcons in Cobb would represent the same way

Those aren’t bad rankings considering Boston only cracked the top 20 with the Celtics at 20. The Red Sox are like 58.

LOL!! I see the “idiots” are in full effect here.
Hockey doesn’t belong in Atlanta? HELLO, what century are you living in? Are you still pumping your drinking/bath water from a well house? Did they finally make your “out door” house inside like the rest of us?
I was born and raised in Georgia, lived in the south ALL my life and absolutely LOVE hockey!!
WHY slam on something you haven’t opened your mind to? Or even TRY to learn? If you have a like for football, then it will appeal to you faster forsure.
You don’t hear bout NHLers fighting dogs or taking gats to a bar and shooting themselves or others. Or beating, raping, killing their own wives and or kids. Dealing drugs on the side even though they make millions.
Their “pro” records don’t need asterics beside them for the “steroid eras”.
Again, why slam something you haven’t opened your mind to? Why not give it a “real” try?
And just because it doesn’t snow 2 feet deep every winter or covered in ice for 8 months of the year doesn’t mean you can’t have a team in the south or anywhere for that matter. It’s called technology for those of you who didn’t make it past the 5th grade. I mean, that sounds as stupid as someone saying,”well Atlanta shouldn’t have a football team cause they play in a dome”.
Sorry for the rant to all you folks with common sense, but couldn’t take it no more.
GO THRASHERS,FALCONS,BRAVES AND HAWKS!!! B PROUD OF THEM ALL!!!!!!
