Michael Vick as a Falcon: Some brief shining moments …

I remember how it was that Saturday in 2001. I remember so many folks descending on Falcons headquarters for a scheduled draft-day celebration that traffic backed up for miles and even Hall County police couldn’t sort it out. I remember what Dan Reeves said about driving to work that giddy day: “People were pulling up beside me and giving me the thumbs-up. Usually they give me some other sign.”

I remember how thrilled we all were that Michael Vick was a Falcon. I remember Jamal Anderson — not Jamaal, but Jamal — saying how heady it felt to be part of an organization that traded up to make such a wonderful thing happen. I remember the feeling that a door to the future had been flung wide open, and that ahead was nothing but seashells and balloons.

I remember waiting for his apprenticeship to end, and I remember the giddiness over the opening game of the 2002 season and how splendid he was in an overtime loss at Lambeau Field. (He would soon revisit the scene to even greater effect.) I remember watching him grow week by week, from the breathless tie forged in Pittsburgh to the overtime wonder wrought in the Metrodome, and I remember thinking Jeff Hullinger said it perfectly on Falcons radio, that this was indeed “the incomparable Michael Vick.”

I remember the thrall in which we approached the 2003 season, with Vick and the Falcons coming off the playoff win in Green Bay and a Super Bowl seeming near at hand, and the utter deflation that accompanied his broken leg that Saturday night against Baltimore. And even then what I remember about that season isn’t all those Vick-less losses but the moment in Houston when he trotted on the field and even the opposing Texans were yelling to one another: “Vick’s in the game! Vick’s in the game!”

I remember 2004, the apex of his career, the DVD backfield and the stomping of the Rams on a Saturday night in the playoffs, and how headed for Philadelphia and the NFC title game it seemed fully possible Vick could contrive to beat a better team in the chill and the snow. And when he couldn’t quite, it figured to be no big deal. He and his team would be back soon enough.

But they weren’t. And what I remember about those next few years is of a career unraveling and a franchise imploding and the layers of a famous person being peeled back until we weren’t sure this was the same guy. We don’t need a recitation of all the incidents at this late date, for we know them all by heart. And indeed, that’s what the decline and fall of Michael Dwayne Vick did to us all: It hit us in the heart. It broke our hearts.

And now he’s a Falcon no longer. We’ve known for almost two years the day was coming, but still it arrived with a thud. He was once the best reason, often the only reason, to watch the Atlanta Falcons play, and it wasn’t only Atlantans who felt that way. I remember the Christmas when my wife had to go find a No. 7 jersey to take back to Northern Kentucky because our little niece had asked Santa for one.

I remember seeing him in his glory, orchestrating the fourth-quarter comeback against San Diego in 2004 and throwing the ball so expertly in Cincinnati in 2006, and I remember talking with him and feeling — every single time I walked away — that he was a good guy with a good heart. And now, when I remember the sobering spring of 2007 and everything thereafter, I feel only sadness.

He was the biggest athlete this city has ever seen. As much happiness as he brought us, he could and should have done so much more.

Nice article.

Not surprisingly, the Falcons weren’t able to find any takers for his contract. Don’t let that fool anyone into thinking teams won’t pick him up on the cheap when he is reinstated.

MB,
Hopefully his time for reflection and repentance will give him the opportunity to do so much more. Perhaps those lessons and mistakes will forge in him (and purge him of any traits/perspectives)of any that would comproimise his willingness and ability to do so much more.
I am pulling for him, and not only limited to his gridiron exploits, but for his remaining days.

Two different perspectives, both excellent opinion pieces.

The best thing every one involved can do, and I do mean every one, including Michael Vick, is to turn and walk away. Case closed, matter concluded, that’s a wrap.

Only when we got a real Q.B. did we see the talent Roddy White has.Vick was a fast runner who could throw a little…very little! He was not even the best Q.B. to come through this city, get real!!

Mark, My memories of Vick are strikingly different from yours. Sure he had some great moments and as you said “Vick could contrive to beat a better team in the chill and the snow”. The most striking words are “He had” and “Vick could” It was all about him as it was in college. He didn’t win the BCS title game and he didn’t win the Super Bowl because it was not about the team. Vick was a selfishly good player which is good enough for 2nd best. I remember it became very clear the team was about Vick waking up to the radio alarm set to Z93 just in time for their news report that Vick had signed a large multi year contract. Any chances of the coaches teaching him to mature were highly unlikely. Hopefully Blank has learned alot. I like the current team much better than any Falcon team of the past.

I can’t say I am sad and I think Vick hates that he’s lost all the money and contracts. If he had never been caught he’d still be hanging out with the low-lifes he surronded himself with and he’d still be fighting dogs and he’d still be the single most overpaid, overhyped player in the NFL. He’s just sad he got caught, but most convicted felons are. To the kids out there who look to Vick as a role model, you’ll end up in prison just like him if you don’t have yoiur goals set a helluva lot higher than Vick. Kids, you can do way better than Vick as a role model.

Mark you summed it up pretty well except for, as Blindog mentions, the “biggest athlete ever” part … unless “biggest” means most hyped … Vick no doubt beats Aaron, Chipper, ‘Nique, et al., and probably even Deion “Primetime” Sanders, on the Hype-O-Meter, but none of them if we’re talking performance. And there’s no doubt Vick will always be “incomparable” in this town as far as being a polarizing sports personality. Good luck and good riddance!

I feel the same way as you do, Mark. I wish him the best. We know this day was an inevitable necessity, and now starts, hopefully, a new chapter. I don’t think it arrived “with a thud,” as you said. On the contrary, I think it’s an event that hopefully allows new life to be brought to this situation. So, possibly, the measuring stick of interest from other teams can start now (rather than hearing things like “we cannot comment due to the fact that he’s still under contract with the Falcons.”) I think it’ll be quite interesting. I’m still going to root for him, wherever he goes. And, for what it’s worth, I’m one of the few people who never threw away my No. 7 jersey. Thanks for the article.

I remember once saying when we drafted Vick (I was a fan of his when he was in college) that “man, this city will never be the same now!”, only to not know how that would end up being true for all the wrong reasons. I’ve seen this city go from being completely one in celebrating Vick to being the most polarized city in the history of professional sports in his downfall and now it truly won’t be the same. This scar will last for a very long time for some (small) people will always use this incident to hurl insults and degrade others, while others will just be saddened from it. It is a shame, it could have and should have been so much more and the blame really lies on #7 shoulders himself, not the fans. He had it all, the world in his hands and let it slip through his fingers. MB, you are right it is a sad day in a sense cause of all the hopes, dreams, and excitement people had in this town for him, BUT a new day is upon us as far as the Falcons are concerned and I am now focusing in on that. I was a Falcon fan before Vick, was a fan of Vick’s when he was a part of the Falcons, and will continue to be a fan of the Falcons now that he is gone. I know what sense you are saying this in, but for me the only way to depart from the ugliness of all that went down concerning MV7 and to let those scars heal is to smile and look at the possible good times watching the team we have now. I hope other fans do the same for there is nothing no one can do about what happened, we can only move on and we have something pretty good to move on with in Coach Mike Smith, Michael Turner, Matt Ryan, Roddy White, and now Tony Gonzalez. These guys are our future (a bright one at that!) and nothing unfortunately can be done about the past…

Vick gave this franchise way more than he got in return from it. Dont be fooled like this franchise was a victim, get real. Before the Vick era, who gave a dayum what the Falcons did? This city didn’t even sell out the 1999 season that came after a super bowl run! That’s just how irrelevant this team was and sadly, is on its way to being again. When the best selling item from the Falcons store is D.Hall’s jersey, you can best believe this franchise is on its way back to 2 decades ago.

Marie — I can’t handle anything with Jeff Hullinger. I’ll never forget watching a segment he was broadcasting about the Braves upcoming World Series berth. Rather than discussing the Braves, he broadcast footage of himself in a dental chair receiving emergency dental work and discussing his treatment. At the very end of the segment, he rolled some canned Braves footage and casually mentioned that the Braves were excited about the upcoming opportunity. End of segment.

Shortly thereafter a friend of mine was at WAGA studios and needed an ink pen. Hullinger told him to open his desk drawer and get one. My friend did — but he also spotted what must have been 2 dozen hairbrushes and 3 cans of hairspray.

To me, it’s a sad day for the city of Atlanta who really apreciate the player that Vick was/is. He single handedly resurected the franchise and the city. We haven’t had anything like that sense and we won’t have that kind of excitement again. Vick was a good QB regardless what you people think, and I think its good for him to have a fresh start and he can come back and dominate again. I wish he wouldn’t have been involved in dogfighting, we would have been a better team if he was still here….Roddy would have been developed (which is the ONLY REASON he’s playing well with Ryan), and have a RB that can carry the load like Turner.

This time, he’ll go to a better franchise, better city, and have better fans that all the mess he had to go through here….I remember all of the racial taunts…which is why he gave them the finger and deservedly so. The Falcons will never be the same. People are latching onto Ryan so fast, and maybe he can get it done, but I doubt it. This franchise has made mistake after mistake during the Vick Era as far as personnel decisions, yet you people can’t even remember that. You people wanted Roddy ran out of town just 2 years ago, and now you love him. What a hypocrite sports city. They would never do that in Pitsburgh or any real NFL City/fans like those. ATL sucks as a sports city, and yes, Vick did all of this to himself, but the heart of the falcons is now gone. It is truly a sad day, but redemption is near for Vick. He can’t go anywhere but up from now on. When Vick comes back with his new team, the dome will be electric again, not some place where you can fall asleep in 10 minutes. We miss you Vick. ATL is still your city.

Second, I say a better franchise/city, because he won’t have to carry the entire load like he did during his time here. If you can’t admit that it was a one man team you really don’t know football. I find it interesting that Roddy himself stated that he let Vick down as a WR and that he didn’t really learn how to have success (catch the football for once) until 2007. Of course you don’t remember that. You just like the sound of Roddy “becoming better,LMAO” after Vick left. Thats totally untrue. Mr Bradley: Regarding your recent post about Raul Ibanez and the steroid issue, dumping on Selig is an easy cop-out for the ill-informed..you are better than that. The MLBPA is 100% to blame for the steroid mess, not MLB. Fehr would never agree to drug-testing in any form and Selig would have had to shut down the game and break the union in order to start a drug-testing program. The MLBPA’s membership were the cheaters/users and their union protected them from detection until the scandal broke and they had to agree to the current testing program under extreme public and congressional pressure.

Ibanez might be clean and could be being unfairly scrutinized but I don’t feel sorry for him one bit. He should have been one of the many clean players in the steroid era (assuming there were some) who demanded that their union protect the clean players, not the cheaters, by demanding a vigorous drug testing program from day one. This is the price you pay for not standing up and demanding that the union look out for all of its members and not just the guys hitting 75 homeruns per year while losing their hair and sporting acne all over their backs.

Put the blame where it belongs: On the players and their union. If Raul Ibanez is really PO’d, he should not blame some blogger who is making a natural point about a 37 year old who is having a career year in the steroid era. He should go find Donald Fehr and punch him in the face!

Selig has actually done quite a masterful job of generating public pressure on the issue and then using that to extract drug-testing-concessions from the union. The Mitchell Report was 100% his idea and he was smart enough to realize that, even though it would generate bad publicity for his beloved sport, it was the only way he could get the leverage necessary to clean up this major problem long-term.

And when is someone with some common sense going to do a story on the rampant HGH use in the NFL? Does anybody with a brain really think that baseball players are the only ones who use PED’s? How do you think those guys get to be so much bigger and faster and stronger than the players who were in the NFL say 20 years ago?

Mr. Vick Supporter,

This is with all due respect, but, Michael Vick “single handedly” resurrected the franchise? Maybe, but he also tore it down to nothing, “single handedly.” You do remember 2007, don’t you. However, Arthur Blank, Thomas Dimitroff, Mike Smith, Matt Ryan, and the rest of the entire Falcons TEAM are bringing this franchise out of the Vick induced nightmare. THAT, my friend, is the difference. Team effort versus ME effort.

Having said that, I think Vick will play again. What he needs is a coach like Mike Singletary who will not only help him as a football player, but more importantly, help him to become a real man.

When I see all the hateful comments I wonder if those are season ticket holders.
From a strictly business side this makes no sense:

1.Vick was never going to play for the Falcons again. We all get that, but we should have gotten something for him even a 7th round draft pick.

2.All cap money is money to being used on active players or picks.

3. The Falcons had a waiting list for season tickets and are now running specials to sell tickets. Wonder why?

4. Vick has a winning record as a starter.

All those are facts. There are those of us who are true fans of the Falcons and we want to win. Then there are the others who are just whiners and poser fans. Bandwagon. There is no better feeling than to be at a Falcons game with full stands causing the opposing team to jump off sides from the noise. (We use to lead the league in false starts).

You are right about one thing, the Falcons did bring in the right people to form a “team”. To bad they didn’t try this 7 years ago. They got caught up in Vick’s mesmerizing ability just like the rest of us and they rode it into the ground by putting sub-par players around him and having him carry the team on too many occasions. You don’t see Ryan carrying ANYTHING, and he shouldn’t, because you can never truly win like that. It’s to bad the Falcons management thought Vick could do it alone. Good that the Falcons brass learned their lesson

Hey Mark..I was giddy that Saturday too. I live 3 miles from the training facility. I heard about the draft party on AJC and drove over. Stood in line not knowing it was for season ticket holders only and when I got to the front two cheerleaders asked if I had my ticket.. I said No…they looked puzzled..guess they don’t hear No too often..shrugged and waved me in..This is a sad day. But the dead money does get us closer to the cap floor if not over it. Its just accounting. Good luck Vick. Hope you have your life together. There will be no third chance.

He went through 3 Coaches. Blank and the GM did everything they could to help Vick be successful. I mean come on, trying to teach a runningback how to be a quarterback is like trying to teach a rock how to float on water.

Again look at the over all facts. We all can see this one trick pony was figured out and again his last two seasons proved it!

I’m glad for one thing and that’s Vick getting caught. The Faclons team have been 100% better because of it.

I was out at a restauraunt up at Lake Lanier, and sitting outside was the entire Falcons Oline and sitting right in the middle of them was Matt Ryan. VIck would have never done that. What Vick did here was great, but it was always about him and the other poo stains on the team like D Hall. Then you had Jim Mora Jr. letting these guys get away with murder. He has no team concept. It was always about him taking off running. Matt Ryan is 10 times the QB that Vick ever was or will ever be. All you people that are saying that the Falcons have set themselves back by releasing them are downright ignorant.

Hey Y’all:

Vick will always be a Falcon legend. One day, he will return with all the “old guys” he played with during his six years in Atlanta. I am more than confident he knows he ended his career here due to his lack of judgement, not for anthing he done on the football field. And that alone is what is going to “reignite” his career: What he does on the football field. We pray that he is a better man now due to he has rid himself of all those insane, negative, so called friends he had. I know he feels better just in that regard. So let the man go on with his career, but to a lot of folks around here, he will always be a FALCON. But right now , our FAclcons are too busy building
“NEW LEGENDS” that will call the GEORGIA DOME home.

Good luck Vick. We will see you on the field one day to play the game the “NEW ATLANTA FALCONS” way and that’s in “ONE HEARTBEAT!!!

@ Vick Supporter and the rest of us. You have to place blame for the team from 01 – 07 first and foremost on Rich McKay. He didn’t draft one OL worth a lick and made bad move after bad move to kill the locker room with guys on the team and no one, not McKay, not Blank, not anyone on the team during that time held Vick accountable.

If we had the structure we have now 6-7 years ago a lot of things would be different…but you can’t live in the “what if.” Vick brought this downfall onto himself and never surrounded him with the right people off the field. Too bad McKay never surrouned him with the right coaches/players on the field either.

I truly thought we were turning the corner to greatness after the loss in Philly in the NFC Championship game, but that was Reeves’ last team that Mora got to coach. 80% of the moves after that failed and hence the blow up of the front office, coaches and players the past 2-3 years.

It will always be unfortunate that Dimitroff and Vick never worked together. I think he could actually assemble the right team around him. This is a big part why Ryan will be successful this year and for a lot of years ahead. He has a great GM, and a true NFL guy at head coach who can relate.

mountain_jim you need to research your comments a little better before you type. After Vick was convicted I looked on the internet and found a dogfighting case in North Carolina in which a WHITE man (non-celebrity) was convicted of eight cases of dogfighting and given 5 years for each charge. 40 years is a helluva lot more than 23 silly months. The bottom line is he was guilty. He lied to everyone about everything and listened to that idiot attorney who said he would be found innocent. Don’t forget him flipping off fans after a WR was ripped for dropping easily caught passes. Yes, he may deserve another chance but he also should be suspended until the 2010 season. That moron Adam Jones was suspended and he wasn’t even convicted. Vick is a remarkable athlete and that’s it. He’s not a QB and never will be.

By “biggest” I meant as a personality, not as a performer. Very well put, Mark. Your article accurately reflects my Michael Vick experience. Lots of hope, some confusion, then ending with a feeling of heartbreak for MV and the Falcons organization. I told my sports-fan friends and family repeatedly over the MV years that the Falcons organization completely lacked any semblance of leadership at any level. That really killed any potential MV had.

I don’t dispute MV lacked apparent leadership characteristics; I don’t dispute that he was maddeningly inconsistent as a passer; I don’t dispute that he often looked confused in the heat of play; I readily acknowledge that each time he took off holding the football in his left hand, I responded with a gutteral “Oh s__t!” knowing that a fumble was likely. I will say this: I watched, in its entirety, the game after which MV flipped off fans in the Dome. In that game, though a bit out of the norm for the team at that time, MV was the ONLY Falcons player who, during that game, played his guts out from start to finish. What he did was unjustifiable, but understandable. (Wasn’t that the game where Roddy White, at a dead stand-still facing the quarterback, dropped a beautiful pass lobbed into his hands when there wasn’t a defender within 15 yards of him; a guranteed TD that would’ve won the game?)

I don’t want him back on the Falcons. I’m glad he didn’t get a pass for his transgressions, but he’s paid the price we, though our legislative representatives, deem appropriate for his crimes. I hope he can play again and I wish him the best. At the same time, I’m a Falcons fan first, so let’s close the MV chapter and move on to bigger and better accomplishments!

Yes, Vick brought fans and attention (a lot of it unwanted and unwarranted) but he was never a complete QB. No, he did not make good choices and has lost it all along with a lot of respect. But it is now water under the bridge and time to move on….everybody just chill out and let it go…..I guarantee your blood pressure would be happy.

Michael Vick could have been one of the greatest PLAYERS, not just QB, but considered one of the greatest players ever to put on an NFL uniform. I think that it’s interesting that he had his best season under Dan Reeves, and I wonder at times what he would have done had Reeves remained the HC.

I don’t regret that we have Matt Ryan. Quite the opposite, I think he’s a great QB and a great guy. But the lingering sting and pain of what could have been with Vick will always be there.

He does deserve another chance. I just wonder what team has the courage to do it.

The only sad thing about this day Mark is that it didn’t happen 2 years ago when Vick made his plea deal and the doors slammed shut behind him. Blank should have had the guts to come out cut Vick the day he admitted his guilt. Yep that would have ended the chapter then and there. New start, new head coach, big season last year to erase the Vick chapter and move on to positive things like next year. Blank had to know Vick wouldn’t be worth a dime after all this. Nobody would want to touch him or be associated with him in any professional manner. Should have had the guts to cut the ties. Blank doesn’t need the money. His reputation is worth more than what he gave Mike Vick.

I’ve got to agree with whoeever it was above that said Vick would have been successful had he had time with Dimitroff to build a proper team around him (or, for that matter, if Dan Reeves had never been let go).

And for the Vick Supporters … listen, I’m white, and I bought season tickets in 2004 because I wanted to see Vick play. There was no racisim directed towards Vick at the Dome, everyone at the Dome were Falcons fans and wanted the Falcons to win. If you’re basing your opinions on what is written in these blogs, you should be ashamed of yourself.

That being said, I hope this closes it out. He’s done his time, that’s the point of jail. He should be allowed to resume playing now, be it somewhere else.

And, hopefully, the rest of the city, Vick Supporter and all, can now get behind Matt Ryan, Roddy White, Tony G, and the rest of the new Atlanta Falcons. The franchise has a bright future ahead and this petty racist crap (on both sides) that always shows up on these blogs is so old. Forbes Magazine
Free Michael Vick
Michael Vick spent 19 months in prison for financing a dog fighting operation and was released yesterday under home confinement. The 28-year-old must now be totally free to do what he is most capable of doing—quarterbacking an NFL team.

Vick has served his time under the law. He should not have to bend over backwards and do summersaults to prove anything to NFL commissioner Roger Goodell. Vick should not have to kiss the butt of the Humane Society or assist the animal rights group in any way. He should not have to “donate” any of his future earnings to any causes to repent. The law is the law. Vick broke it and paid the price. It is now time to completely free him.

Mr. Supporter 2, this is espn’s list of the top 10 players in the NFC South they would build a team around. I stopped at 4. I’m assuming you only make stupid comments to get a rise out of people, and that’s cool, it’s a blog, but I’m curious whether you feel that you know more about the NFL than actual sportswriters and NFL scouts? If so, why aren’t you coaching or working as en executive in the NFL?

1. Drew Brees, QB, New Orleans. You start a franchise with a quarterback and this guy threw for more than 5,000 yards last year.

2. Jordan Gross, T, Carolina. When you start with a quarterback, you’ve got to protect his blind side. Gross is the best pass-blocker in the division.

3. Steve Smith, WR, Carolina. If I were ranking by best overall players in the division, I’d start with Smith. As it is, I’ll take him third and let him be Brees’ top target. He originally was drafted in the third round anyway and this will keep the chip on his shoulder.

4. Matt Ryan, QB, Atlanta. I’m taking two quarterbacks because I can. If the window had been five years, I probably would have started this list with Ryan.

The page has officially been turned, so good. So on to the state of the Falcons franchise. The Falcons suck, 2008 is in the past. Let’s see them repeat in 2009. Most of you Falcon fans that want to talk about 2008 thought the Falcons would suck last year as well. They had a good season not a great season. The Falcons were not the turn around team of last season it was Miami. Matt Ryan was not the most successful and surprise rookie of 2008 it was Joe Flacco. The most important stat in all of sports is win and loses, play-off wins and ultimately championships. I don’t care what Ryan’s QB rating was last year and don’t care what it will be this year, lets see how many games the team will win. Don’t use the schedule as your excuse. If your team have improved from last season they will at least make the play-offs again and win 11 games. But they won’t, they will go 4-12 because Ryan is a one hit wonder and the Falcon’s suck.

2009, Back to life, back to reality.

I’ve had, shall we say, an interesting day. I had my All-Trade Friday all plotted out — Francoeur, Kovalchuk and Josh Smith — and then the Falcons up and released Vick and I wound up writing on that, too. And at some point I typed this Tweet: “Should the Falcons deal Jeff Francoeur?”

So I’m sorry to have responded so infrequently today, and I’d like to say thanks for the kind words. And thanks also for keeping this dialogue on a high plane. It’s greatly appreciated on this end.

QUESTION:

LAST WEEK – SAINTS COACH VISITED MIKE VICK

THIS WEEK – RELEASED BY FALCONS

COINCIDENT?
_________________________________________________

Check today’s news. New Orleans has been added to the teams that say NO VICK.

“Saints general manager Mickey Loomis had this to say on the topic: “We have no plans to bring Michael Vick to the Saints.”

Payton addressed the topic during the team’s recent minicamp: “I’ve read about our interest in certain players and putting in that (wildcat) system. Right now, we’ve got too many other things we’ve got to work on. I just don’t want to take away any snaps from Drew Brees. End of story. Let’s everyone move on. Please.”

If you like to see a list of the other teams that have said NO VICK check out this link:
http://www.profootballtalk.com/2009/02/14/the-anti-vick-list/

It’s pretty long and growing everyday, just as it should.

Those who want to label what Michael Vick did as a mistake has a screw lose themselves. What some need to know, is that Vick didn’t ONLY participate something as horrific as dog fighting. Those dogs that wouldn’t fight were hung, drowned, starved, electrocuted and beaten to death. This man could have afforded humane euthanasia for the dogs he didn’t want, instead he thought up some of the most gruesome, sadistic methods possible to kill these animals. He didn’t do it once, or for a few months, he did it for 7 long years, or maybe even longer if you listen to his father.

If throwing a dog in a swimming pool, with his ears clipped to battery cables, and electrocuting him doesn’t curdle your blood, then something is very wrong with you. If hanging a dog, and if he survives that holding his head down in a 5 gallon bucket of water doesn’t curdle your blood, then something is very wrong with you. If throwing a dog repeatedly against a concrete flooring until all his organs ruptured doesn’t curdle your blood, then something is very wrong with you. If pulling a dog’s teeth, with pliers and no anesthesia so you can put her in a rape stand and have other vicious dogs mate with her doesn’t curdle your blood, then something is very wrong with you. If throwing family pets in the pit with a abused, tortured fighting dog and laughing while the family pet is ripped apart doesn’t curdle your blood then something is very wrong with you. And finally, if you have actually DONE these things, then something is extremely wrong with you, as is MV. He is a monster, and the public is on to him. You’ll see. Every team that has even considered taking that stench into their locker room, the very next day, has a press conference to deny it. Why? Because of the massive email and phone calls they get from their fans, threatening to boycott that team if they pick him up. Practically every coach and fan that says, “MV deserves a second chance”, follow it up with ” but not on my team”. There’s a reason for that. People are not going to forget what MV did, it’s just that simple. And if you think any team that picks him up isn’t going to suffer the consequences of that choice, then you must be a moron.

Sad day huh Bradley? There were lots of sad days for lots of innocent animals, torturous, painful days, all for the sake of the entertainment of a millionaire who could have enjoyed anything he chose, and he chose to torture, mutilate and fight dogs. The sad thing is that I will never read an article you write now, without thinking about this one, and how much of a delusional person you must be.

Great article Mr. Bradley… Just want to offer that like it or not, Michael Vick was the biggest thing to hit Atlanta from a sports perspective when he arrived in 2001. No disrespect to Hank Aaron (or ‘Nique Wilkins, wow, whoever said that must not be from the ATL) but Vick did not receive death threats like Hank did which in my eyes means that perhaps Mr. Aaron was not as “big” a “thing” as people like to remember. Alas, nostalgia is usually positive and certainly usually slanted to fit our particular cause or perspective. I wonder what Hank would say about being such a big thing in his day and how it felt to have much of the city loving him and much of the state wanting him dead just because of his black skin. He has even commented on being scared to death of the two guys that ran up to him on the field as he rounded the bases after his record shattering homer. While some of us like to think that all is forever dandy “between the races” in the land of cotton, underneath the surface is the torrent of bigotry that feels, at least on some days, like it will forever divide us. Unfortunately, this torrent is ever present on the AJC message boards, especially when the article pertains to MV7.

Mike, good luck in your future endeavors but know that this country does not believe in reform or rehabilitation. Even though you have served your time, I am afraid that your real “time” is only just beginning!

Diane, what Danny Heatly did was a mistake, one that had horrible consequence of ending his dear friends life and nearly costing him his career. Mr. Heatly (of whom I am NOT a fan) did not plan the events that led to this mistake. Mr. Vick, on the other hand, did not make a mistake. He knowingly and purposely funded and took part in an underground illegal and brutal activity over the course of 5 years (plenty of time for any reasonable person to ask themselves ‘what the hell am I doing’) while camouflaging the place of his heinous activity. He knew full well what he did was wrong, and yet continued his activity.

That being said, he has served his time, and should be allowed to succeed or fail by his own determination from this point forward. My broken heart caused by Mr. Vick has healed, and I believe that supporters and detractors alike should go on with their lives, to live and let live.

Here’s why the Falcons didn’t trade Vick: Because no other team wanted to be seen as the team that traded for Vick. Signing him as a free agent is different, especially if a team suffers an injury at quarterback. Fans would figure to be more understanding — perhaps even supportive — of that.

My 2 cents. Loved watching MV7 play football, even though the results weren’t up to expectations. I’m not faulting the Falcons for releasing Vick – he didn’t have any trade value. Time to move on – for both the franchise and for Michael. Franchise – keep drafting and signing high character players. Michael – keep your nose clean, stay away from bad people, and play football.

as Simon would say, this was not your best work but it is inspiring, based on the comments. the Vick brothers unfortunately had to grow up on the fly. One didn’t make it and the other is a question so far. another great nfl qb named Favre also came through A-town and missed the boat here as well due to his old habits. Vick hopefully is now closer to grown up and unfortunately we won’t be on the same side, because as you say, Mark, someone will use him. Vick is indeed a super star. I spoke with Nobis in Vick’s second year and we discussed Vick’s tendency to run past the line of scrimmage – dangerous unless you are sure you can clear the linebackers.
And for players who excited the town, Nobis certainly raised the level of interest in football here as the one who stuffed Joe Willie in the Orange Bowl, so this may be a generational thing. Nobis should be in the HOF – Vick is a work in progress.
Vick also needs to read Tommy’s playbook when it comes to PR. It is a simple formula – God blessed you with talent, pay it forward to the city with public service and they will bless you back.

Simply put, was the Michael Vick era in Atlanta worth it? The answer is yes, it absolutely was.

Detractors will point out his 53.8 career completion percentage, the undeniably mediocre touchdown to interception ratio (1.37 to 1) and his reckless, and injury prone, style of play.

What you can’t deny is that Michael Vick won. Quarterbacks get too much credit for wins and too much blame for losses. While it’s unfair, it’s the nature of the sport.

Vick was 38-28-1 as a starting quarterback. For a lot of franchises, that’s not that great of a record. For Atlanta, it’s worthy of a parade.

Michael Vick was responsible for two things Atlanta had never had before. The first one is buzz. Even in the 1998 Super Bowl season, noone thought Atlanta was for real until the end of the season. Nobody gave them a snowball’s chance in **** of beating Minnesota in the NFC title game.

Michael Vick gave the franchise instant notoriety. Jerseys flew off the racks. Tickets sold in bunches. The Falcons sold out every home game of the Michael Vick era once he assumed the role of starter. That was unheard of in this town.

When I was growing up the only way to see Falcon home games was to go to them.

Secondly, Michael Vick brought a radical concept to the city: expectation. Vick led the team to a playoff win at Lambeau his first year as starter in 2002.

After missing most of the 2003 season with an injury, he led the team to the NFC title game in 2004. Atlanta collapsed down the stretch the next two seasons finishing 8-8 and 7-9 in ‘05 and ‘06, and people were livid.

I don’t remember a single season in my lifetime where anyone complained about a .500 season in Atlanta. That was the futility of the Falcons franchise over history at work. We had dramatically lowered expectations.

So now Vick is going to come to your house with his jumper cables in hand ready to jolt the living hell out of everyone that displeases him…..okaaay. Well I got one better than that….how bout we warn track runners and sprinters that every time they suffer an injury or come up lame in a race that they will be “gently” euthanized as routinely as horses and dogs who suffer the same fate in competition (http://www.chai-online.org/en/compassion/entertainment_racing.htm)…..or lets run the hell out of the winter bobsledders until they freeze to death just as some of the dogs do on the iditarod trail (http://www.adn.com/iditarod/2009/story/731154.html.).

Always so much hate for Mr Vick. The man done his time but most of you pale faces act as if he’s done something to you. People who look like Mark and live in the hills of Georgia and Tennessee have been fighting dogs and interbreeding for years and you folks have no problem. You have a whole religious sect in Texas and Utah breeding females to marry old pale faces and you have no problem. You got a home grown terrorist killing people in DC and you have no problem. The Atlanta sports scene will go back to being loserville as it has always been.

This one of the most racially divided issues since the OJ deal, and he supposedly killed someone. So you set him up to finally get him locked up, now is the other side truly happy. You want us to come to your colleges and be your prize buck, and bring you notoriety. The man was the biggest athlete this city has ever seen b/c of the other names that have been here before. You want Matt Ryan to be that and he’s not. He won games last year, but when he doesn’t cut the mustard. Then what he’ll not be good enough either or will he pass the eye test. Everybody hates a black man who has money, and this boiled down to hate for VICK because of his bank statement and he didn’t pass the eye test.

Potential blackouts for this coming NFL season is not just an Atlanta Falcon’s problem.

There are several other teams that have already expressed concerns about their pre-season ticket sales due to the current economic conditions.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who had a waiting list thousands long a few years ago are now selling season tickets in half-season packages to drum up interest.

In Jacksonville, the Jaguars have sold roughly 35,000 season tickets. That’s behind the pace of last season, and could lead to all 10 home games being blacked out.

It’s the same in a lot of other cities so let’s not try to blame the Falcon’s potential blackouts on the lack of people not going because Vick won’t be playing at the Dome. That’s just not factual!!!

Diane…The Falcons turned their back on MV???? You can’t be serious? He lied to his boss and was convited of running and financing a criminal enterprise. I believe your boss would kick you to the curb if that happened. This is what happens in the “big boy” world. This is not a child’s nursery rhyme or story book. Any NFL team would have done the same situation when presented with this set of facts. He is now a felon. He has paid his dues. Lets see where this now goes. But do not blame the Falcons for showing him the door. Any law abiding person would expect the same treatment under the same circumstances. You are not allowed to color outside the lines and expect to get a free pass from those in authority. The Falcons Mgt. did the right thing and I am proud of their actions.

Mars- of course Heatly didnt intend to cause an accident that took the life of his friend…….but to say that he made a “mistake” is kinda mindboggling and troubling to hear. First of all, Heatly was not even drunk that night, so his actions are much more deplorable to me because he was fully aware of what he was doing. Heatley was charged with vehicular homicide, he pleaded guilty to second-degree vehicular homicide, driving too fast for conditions, failure to maintain a lane, and speeding. Heatly willingly made soo many bad decisions that night that it’s incredible to me that he still has a drriver’s license, and that he didn’t serve any jail time, and this is where the hypocrisy lies. Heatley avoided having to go to trial as part of a plea deal that dropped the first-degree charge of vehicular homicide, and went on to sign a 3-year 13.5 million contract with the Ottawa Senators after he left Atlanta. Heatley began the 2007–08 season with a new 6-year contract extension with the Senators worth $45 million. So Heatly avoids any jail time, gets a chance to heal from his injuries and resumes his life, signs multi-million dollar contracts, hears the adorations and screams of the fans: but Micheal Vick goes to jail, has his livelihood taken away from him, is subjected to the demands of a “brain scan” test, and has become the scum of the earth for his actions which did not lead to the death of any person?

It’s amazing how many people go out of their way to project hatred, ignorance & pass judgment on other human beings… I guess that’s just the world we live in. Back to football: A man(Vick), made a mistake for which he has paid his debt. A franchise and a city must move on, not by choice, but by necessity. I to, was a “Vick Supporter” as well, but I was a “Falcon Supporter” long before Vick ever wore the Red & Black. I to, was extremely disappointed in the decisions he made. We needed to move on; WE being the franchise, the city of Atlanta, Falcon Nation, & even Michael Vick. This move helps everyone involved. I wish Vick well, & like any man he deserves a second chance, it just wont be in a Falcon uniform. Sad, but very true… Some of you bloggers have bigger issues than Mike Vick does; so my prayers are for you. Vick will be fine, in football or not. I hope I can say the same for some of you. Let’s GO FALCONS ‘09!!!! Nice work Mark.

I told you VS2, the first game in the Dome against the team Mike Vick is on, that game will sell out. I cant wait for it either, so I can see the bitter looks on all the media faces as they watch the Dome fill up with a whole bunch of Vick jerseys – and half will be that falcons #7 jersey. I cant wait to hear the grumblings and rumblings of the AWM’s as they clench their fists and grit their teeth mad that no matter what….all they did was set him up for the ultimate comeback. They are mad as all get-out that there is no way to keep him out now. Trying to force the concept of changing positions is not working, trying to keep him suspended won’t work – in fact, they never saw the possibility of him being able to use a new league to get back in the NFL- that’s gotta sting. Its driving them mad that all they did was set the man up for the ultimate comeback story of the year. Please, they are clinging for dear life to the “he’s been out for 2 years!!”…and what? Chris Redman had been out of football for 3 years and selling insurance. Mike Vick could have been bedridden for 2 years and would still be better than 75% of the QBs in the league right now. They are clinging to every silly excuse in the world – fictional protestors, the imaginary PETA members who apparently have been diehard NFL season ticket holders all this time! LOL Yeah haters, the weed-smoking dogfighter managed 3 Probowls in 4 full seasons, 2 of those years in the playoffs and another breaking a NFL record. Yeah, the weed-smoking, dogfighter made Falcons fans think they should expect to(gulp) WIN GAMES….alright haters, guess what…ya cleaned him up! That’s right, he managed to do that while being high and fighting dogs on the side…now he’s focused and all cleaned up! Thanks haters!! You bought your worst nightmare to life. “NFL NETWORK” SIZES IT UP PRETTY CLEARLY

From the beginning, justice could clearly see when Michael Vick committed an unholy trinity of sins.

His first was the brutal treatment of man’s most beloved best friend. Secondly, was his blatant lying to both his owner Arthur Blank and NFL commissioner Roger Goodell. Lastly, his financial support of an illegal gambling operation across state lines violated the Federal Rico statues which brought the federal authorities down on Vick and cost him 23 months in a Federal Penitentiary in Leavenworth, Kan.

Now that Vick has paid his debt for committing the latter sin, justice appears to be peeling off her blind fold and setting her sights on further retribution. As emotions run deep, it seems as though prison and bankruptcy is not enough of a price to pay. So many are wanting more than a mere pound of flesh. Animal rights groups are painting signs and organizing to protest any team who is willing to sign Vick. Members of the media are encouraging Commissioner Goodell to strip Vick of even more time away from the game with a lengthy suspension.

The scales of justice are clearly unbalanced when Vick loses two seasons or more, but the Patriots received no suspensions at all for videotaping the Jets’ defensive signals in 2007.

Blind fold back on please. In this case, justice has been served.

Paddy, you have to realize that people like Jockstrap2 and Don’t Revise History don’t understand that this is the most serious economic downturn since the great depression. They have never had a job, so the concept of a lot of folks being out of work, and not being able to buy season tickets, has no meaning to them. crabapplejoe, obviously YOU get a check each month and can’t afford season tickets, but that’s not why the Falcons are reducing ticket prices as if its a going out of business sale. The Saints sold out and Nawlins has a higher unemployment rate than Atlanta and always HAS had a higher unemployment rate. So why have you and your bashers decided to just boycott the Falcons starting in 2007? Why didn’t you boycott the Falcons when Blank was raising ticket prices from 2002 through the season leading into 2007? Huh? Strange way to boycott, you didn’t like the starting QB so you spent more money and assured straight sold out games…yet when he is NO longer the QB, you boycott? Hmmm, bet King Arthur didn’t see that one coming! I guess he’s wondering exactly what is it that you want? Guess he’s finding out that it was really never about the Falcons afterall. Preston, your ramblings have nothing to do with what I said, and certainly do not correct your mistaken value system. I never claimed Heatly was innocent, nor do I even care anything about the guy. However, what he did do was in the moment. A bad decision, with or without dire consequences, is something that every human being has done, and will continue to do. You know this through your own incredibly stupid decisions, don’t you?
On the other hand, funding and running a large brutal illegal criminal operation is not, let me repeat for this retard, IS NOT a mistake or a bad decision one will regret 24 hours later. 5 years. 5 years. 5 years. 5 years. Plenty of time for any reasonable person to say “my God, what kind of lowlife have I become?” However you are correct in stating that there are ALLEDGEDLY no deaths to humans caused by this venture. Who ever heard of a large interstate gambling ring that has led to the loss of life, eh? Besides, in your logic, the lack of evidence is proof of innocence. If the bodies are buried deep enough then no crime is committed. (As long as you are manufacturing ridiculous scenarios, I shall indulge in a little ‘fairness doctrine’ activity.)

That being said, the man has done his time for things of which he was proven guilty. This is called justice. I, for one, hope he comes out of this a better man. I wish him all the success in the world, except when he plays the Falcons.

The funny thing about these type of blogs is that a lot of people will use them to promote their feelings of ignorance concerning hate, racism, and whatever prejudicial agenda they may have. A lot of the comments posted have absolutely nothing to do with Vick becoming a productive citizen and resuming his life just as others who have done things just as harmful as him. Vick’s criminal actions are understandably looked upon by some with a little more scrutiny than others, but the fact remains is that he has been judged by the laws of the land and has served his time, he has apologized to all for his actions, and whether you choose to accept that or not is not his problem anymore, and he has a right to get his life together. I would be much more comfortable being around Vick at this point in his life, than to be anywhere near some of the clowns that post some of the nonsense here, and it doesn’t matter what side of the issue you side with, some of you people are crazy as hec.
