I remember how it was that Saturday in 2001. I remember so many folks descending on Falcons headquarters for a scheduled draft-day celebration that traffic backed up for miles and even Hall County police couldn’t sort it out. I remember what Dan Reeves said about driving to work that giddy day: “People were pulling up beside me and giving me the thumbs-up. Usually they give me some other sign.”
I remember how thrilled we all were that Michael Vick was a Falcon. I remember Jamal Anderson — not Jamaal, but Jamal — saying how heady it felt to be part of an organization that traded up to make such a wonderful thing happen. I remember the feeling that a door to the future had been flung wide open, and that ahead was nothing but seashells and balloons.
I remember waiting for his apprenticeship to end, and I remember the giddiness over the opening game of the 2002 season and how splendid he was in an overtime loss at Lambeau Field. (He would soon revisit the scene to even greater effect.) I remember watching him grow week by week, from the breathless tie forged in Pittsburgh to the overtime wonder wrought in the Metrodome, and I remember thinking Jeff Hullinger said it perfectly on Falcons radio, that this was indeed “the incomparable Michael Vick.”
I remember the thrall in which we approached the 2003 season, with Vick and the Falcons coming off the playoff win in Green Bay and a Super Bowl seeming near at hand, and the utter deflation that accompanied his broken leg that Saturday night against Baltimore. And even then what I remember about that season isn’t all those Vick-less losses but the moment in Houston when he trotted on the field and even the opposing Texans were yelling to one another: “Vick’s in the game! Vick’s in the game!”
I remember 2004, the apex of his career, the DVD backfield and the stomping of the Rams on a Saturday night in the playoffs, and how headed for Philadelphia and the NFC title game it seemed fully possible Vick could contrive to beat a better team in the chill and the snow. And when he couldn’t quite, it figured to be no big deal. He and his team would be back soon enough.
But they weren’t. And what I remember about those next few years is of a career unraveling and a franchise imploding and the layers of a famous person being peeled back until we weren’t sure this was the same guy. We don’t need a recitation of all the incidents at this late date, for we know them all by heart. And indeed, that’s what the decline and fall of Michael Dwayne Vick did to us all: It hit us in the heart. It broke our hearts.
And now he’s a Falcon no longer. We’ve known for almost two years the day was coming, but still it arrived with a thud. He was once the best reason, often the only reason, to watch the Atlanta Falcons play, and it wasn’t only Atlantans who felt that way. I remember the Christmas when my wife had to go find a No. 7 jersey to take back to Northern Kentucky because our little niece had asked Santa for one.
I remember seeing him in his glory, orchestrating the fourth-quarter comeback against San Diego in 2004 and throwing the ball so expertly in Cincinnati in 2006, and I remember talking with him and feeling — every single time I walked away — that he was a good guy with a good heart. And now, when I remember the sobering spring of 2007 and everything thereafter, I feel only sadness.
He was the biggest athlete this city has ever seen. As much happiness as he brought us, he could and should have done so much more.

The page has officially been turned, so good. So on to the state of the Falcons franchise. The Falcons suck, 2008 is in the past. Let’s see them repeat in 2009. Most of you Falcon fans that want to talk about 2008 thought the Falcons would suck last year as well. They had a good season not a great season. The Falcons were not the turn around team of last season it was Miami. Matt Ryan was not the most successful and surprise rookie of 2008 it was Joe Flacco. The most important stat in all of sports is win and loses, play-off wins and ultimately championships. I don’t care what Ryan’s QB rating was last year and don’t care what it will be this year, lets see how many games the team will win. Don’t use the schedule as your excuse. If your team have improved from last season they will at least make the play-offs again and win 11 games. But they won’t, they will go 4-12 because Ryan is a one hit wonder and the Falcon’s suck.

I’ve had, shall we say, an interesting day. I had my All-Trade Friday all plotted out — Francoeur, Kovalchuk and Josh Smith — and then the Falcons up and released Vick and I wound up writing on that, too. And at some point I typed this Tweet: “Should the Falcons deal Jeff Francoeur?”
So I’m sorry to have responded so infrequently today, and I’d like to say thanks for the kind words. And thanks also for keeping this dialogue on a high plane. It’s greatly appreciated on this end.

Love how you numbnuts jump to conclusions from an article that clearly indicates its speculation at best regarding the younger Vick. Is reading comprehension that hard for you inbreds?

Not a day goes by on the Falcons own website where the fans message board doesn’t have at least two threads about Mike Vick on the “Talk About The Falcons” page. The AJC might as well be his myspace page…and every blog generates 10 times the comments than any other sports topic. Vick runs this place. You haters dont realize you’re his biggest supporters.

QUESTION:
LAST WEEK – SAINTS COACH VISITED MIKE VICK
THIS WEEK – RELEASED BY FALCONS
COINCIDENT?
_________________________________________________
Check today’s news. New Orleans has been added to the teams that say NO VICK.
“Saints general manager Mickey Loomis had this to say on the topic: “We have no plans to bring Michael Vick to the Saints.”
Payton addressed the topic during the team’s recent minicamp: “I’ve read about our interest in certain players and putting in that (wildcat) system. Right now, we’ve got too many other things we’ve got to work on. I just don’t want to take away any snaps from Drew Brees. End of story. Let’s everyone move on. Please.”
If you like to see a list of the other teams that have said NO VICK check out this link:
http://www.profootballtalk.com/2009/02/14/the-anti-vick-list/
It’s pretty long and growing everyday, just as it should.
Those who want to label what Michael Vick did as a mistake has a screw lose themselves. What some need to know, is that Vick didn’t ONLY participate something as horrific as dog fighting. Those dogs that wouldn’t fight were hung, drowned, starved, electrocuted and beaten to death. This man could have afforded humane euthanasia for the dogs he didn’t want, instead he thought up some of the most gruesome, sadistic methods possible to kill these animals. He didn’t do it once, or for a few months, he did it for 7 long years, or maybe even longer if you listen to his father.
If throwing a dog in a swimming pool, with his ears clipped to battery cables, and electrocuting him doesn’t curdle your blood, then something is very wrong with you. If hanging a dog, and if he survives that holding his head down in a 5 gallon bucket of water doesn’t curdle your blood, then something is very wrong with you. If throwing a dog repeatedly against a concrete flooring until all his organs ruptured doesn’t curdle your blood, then something is very wrong with you. If pulling a dog’s teeth, with pliers and no anesthesia so you can put her in a rape stand and have other vicious dogs mate with her doesn’t curdle your blood, then something is very wrong with you. If throwing family pets in the pit with a abused, tortured fighting dog and laughing while the family pet is ripped apart doesn’t curdle your blood then something is very wrong with you. And finally, if you have actually DONE these things, then something is extremely wrong with you, as is MV. He is a monster, and the public is on to him. You’ll see. Every team that has even considered taking that stench into their locker room, the very next day, has a press conference to deny it. Why? Because of the massive email and phone calls they get from their fans, threatening to boycott that team if they pick him up. Practically every coach and fan that says, “MV deserves a second chance”, follow it up with ” but not on my team”. There’s a reason for that. People are not going to forget what MV did, it’s just that simple. And if you think any team that picks him up isn’t going to suffer the consequences of that choice, then you must be a moron.
Sad day huh Bradley? There were lots of sad days for lots of innocent animals, torturous, painful days, all for the sake of the entertainment of a millionaire who could have enjoyed anything he chose, and he chose to torture, mutilate and fight dogs. The sad thing is that I will never read an article you write now, without thinking about this one, and how much of a delusional person you must be.

First off I am no writer so please bear with my humble attempt.I am not a foaming right winger and I am not a fan of the worldnet daily idiots. But being a farmer these two organizations affect my life and living. How can these groups get away with so much lobbying and like Cheneys energy task force be eyebrow deep in crafting animal laws, yet remain tax exempt?how can they claim to love animals when they contribute next to nothing to animal shelters and it is well known what animals they do take in they have a close to 90 % kill ratio.KILL is a much harsher word than the gentle euphenism ‘put to sleep’ is’nt it?

YES-That is what you are now.I am glad that waon’t be FALCON FOR THE SIMPLE REASON THAT THE FALCONS DO NOT DESERVE- They turned their backs on him and because they found Matt Ryan-They feel as they doy don’t need him – I hope the falcons nevr makes ift to the Super B.Again. I do believe that Mike will get an opportunity to play with another team. When he does play and come the Atlanta- i shall be there supporting him regardless of what team is paying in the NFL. The most saddest thing about this day is that you hippocrites that act as though you are God- It is not left up to any man to set Mikes’s Destiny.Everyone has been so jealous of him because of the money that he made-I believe that is truly why most people wanted to bering him down!!!- The disgrace to tis city is DANNY HEALY WHO KILLED A HUMAN IN A CAR AND WAS STILL SUPPORTED BY FANS- WHAT ABOUT THAT? Great article Mr. Bradley… Just want to offer that like it or not, Michael Vick was the biggest thing to hit Atlanta from a sports perspective when he arrived in 2001. No disrespect to Hank Aaron (or ‘Nique Wilkins, wow, whoever said that must not be from the ATL) but Vick did not receive death threats like Hank did which in my eyes means that perhaps Mr. Aaron was not as “big” a “thing” as people like to remember. Alas, nostalgia is usually positive and certainly usually slanted to fit our particular cause or perspective. I wonder what Hank would say about being such a big thing in his day and how it felt to have much of the city loving him and much of the state wanting him dead just because of his black skin. He has even commented on being scared to death of the two guys that ran up to him on the field as he rounded the bases after his record shattering homer. While some of us like to think that all is forever dandy “between the races” in the land of cotton, underneath the surface is the torrent of bigotry that feels, at least on some days, like it will forever divide us. Unfortunately, this torrent is ever present on the AJC message boards, especially when the article pertains to MV7.
Mike, good luck in your future endeavors but know that this country does not believe in reform or rehabilitation. Even though you have served your time, I am afraid that your real “time” is only just beginning!

Diane, what Danny Heatly did was a mistake, one that had horrible consequence of ending his dear friends life and nearly costing him his career. Mr. Heatly (of whom I am NOT a fan) did not plan the events that led to this mistake. Mr. Vick, on the other hand, did not make a mistake. He knowingly and purposely funded and took part in an underground illegal and brutal activity over the course of 5 years (plenty of time for any reasonable person to ask themselves ‘what the hell am I doing’) while camouflaging the place of his heinous activity. He knew full well what he did was wrong, and yet continued his activity.
That being said, he has served his time, and should be allowed to succeed or fail by his own determination from this point forward. My broken heart caused by Mr. Vick has healed, and I believe that supporters and detractors alike should go on with their lives, to live and let live.

I dont really understand why we didnt trade him to someone for somebody. I dont get releasing him. He is still a talent. Many teams will be interested and we just give him away. Michael left football because of nonrelated football conviction. Now we question whether any one will want him. That is ridiculous. The guy will be back in the NFL and scoring touchdowns in no time.

I agree with you Mark Bradley………..Vick was avery exciting player who I really enjoyed watching play, sure he had a lot of bad games, but he had a lot of games and made a lot of plays that left everyone breathless. I hate that he made the choices that ultimately led to his demise, but he has already paid a hefty price and I do hope the best for him. Now, to all of the haters here….are you people freakin serious? Danny Heatly can come back to the sport that has made him millions, and get a standing ovation after his irresponsible decision directly led to the death of his team mate? But the very mention of Micheal Vick or the thought of redemption on his behalf is unpardonable?

Here’s why the Falcons didn’t trade Vick: Because no other team wanted to be seen as the team that traded for Vick. Signing him as a free agent is different, especially if a team suffers an injury at quarterback. Fans would figure to be more understanding — perhaps even supportive — of that.

My 2 cents. Loved watching MV7 play football, even though the results weren’t up to expectations. I’m not faulting the Falcons for releasing Vick – he didn’t have any trade value. Time to move on – for both the franchise and for Michael. Franchise – keep drafting and signing high character players. Michael – keep your nose clean, stay away from bad people, and play football.

Now will the Vick haters stop boycotting the Falcons and buy season tickets? I assume the reason y’all didn’t buy them and made Blank have to beg companies all around Atlanta was because Vick was on the roster. Well he’s not now so no excuses!! Haters BUY SEASON TICKETS. The Falcons have been reduced to having a 2 game special just to try and sell out the home opener! Haters will you actually show that you LIKE the Falcons now or was it all about Vick the WHOLE TIME! We’ll see won’t we? We’ll see if it was about Vick or do you really care about the Atlanta Falcons! HA! I bet we’ll see that the haters actually supported Vick! LOL Too bad Blank! as Simon would say, this was not your best work but it is inspiring, based on the comments. the Vick brothers unfortunately had to grow up on the fly. One didn’t make it and the other is a question so far. another great nfl qb named Favre also came through A-town and missed the boat here as well due to his old habits. Vick hopefully is now closer to grown up and unfortunately we won’t be on the same side, because as you say, Mark, someone will use him. Vick is indeed a super star. I spoke with Nobis in Vick’s second year and we discussed Vick’s tendency to run past the line of scrimmage – dangerous unless you are sure you can clear the linebackers.
And for players who excited the town, Nobis certainly raised the level of interest in football here as the one who stuffed Joe Willie in the Orange Bowl, so this may be a generational thing. Nobis should be in the HOF – Vick is a work in progress.
Vick also needs to read Tommy’s playbook when it comes to PR. It is a simple formula – God blessed you with talent, pay it forward to the city with public service and they will bless you back.

Simply put, was the Michael Vick era in Atlanta worth it? The answer is yes, it absolutely was.
Detractors will point out his 53.8 career completion percentage, the undeniably mediocre touchdown to interception ratio (1.37 to 1) and his reckless, and injury prone, style of play.
What you can’t deny is that Michael Vick won. Quarterbacks get too much credit for wins and too much blame for losses. While it’s unfair, it’s the nature of the sport.
Vick was 38-28-1 as a starting quarterback. For a lot of franchises, that’s not that great of a record. For Atlanta, it’s worthy of a parade.
Michael Vick was responsible for two things Atlanta had never had before. The first one is buzz. Even in the 1998 Super Bowl season, noone thought Atlanta was for real until the end of the season. Nobody gave them a snowball’s chance in **** of beating Minnesota in the NFC title game.
Michael Vick gave the franchise instant notoriety. Jerseys flew off the racks. Tickets sold in bunches. The Falcons sold out every home game of the Michael Vick era once he assumed the role of starter. That was unheard of in this town.
When I was growing up the only way to see Falcon home games was to go to them.
Secondly, Michael Vick brought a radical concept to the city: expectation. Vick led the team to a playoff win at Lambeau his first year as starter in 2002.
After missing most of the 2003 season with an injury, he led the team to the NFC title game in 2004. Atlanta collapsed down the stretch the next two seasons finishing 8-8 and 7-9 in ‘05 and ‘06, and people were livid.
I don’t remember a single season in my lifetime where anyone complained about a .500 season in Atlanta. That was the futility of the Falcons franchise over history at work. We had dramatically lowered expectations.
