You’re an NFL team. You need a QB. Vick, Favre or Vince?

The famous usher Walter Banks — also the nicest man who has ever lived — posed this question last night at the ol’ ballyard: If you were an NFL team and all your quarterbacks were hurt, would you sign Brett Favre, Vince Young or Michael Vick?

Me, I’d sign Vick. (Let’s assume for the sake of today’s exercise he’s cleared to play.) He has done more in the NFL than Young. (Speaking of whom, he’s still under contract with the Titans, but let’s pretend he isn’t.) I remain intrigued by Young, but I think Vick’s the better player.

Which quarterback would you choose?

And Favre? I feel about him the way Kate apparently feels about Jon. (Pop culture reference!) I’d rather go without a quarterback — think Tom Matte in that 1965 playoff game with the plays on his wristband — than have that dithering prima donna on my roster.

But you are, as ever, free to disagree. Here’s a poll, and the comment section is below. Have at it. And let’s try to keep this on a football level. Just this once.

Of the three listed, I go with Tom Matte. No drama, no prison time, and a decent leader. The three choices contain none of those qualities.

Jim and Mark just exactly what teams do you clowns own? You dont, ok. Isn’t it amazing how these 3 guys made it to the NFL because of their talent. Please indicate the last time you guys caught a pass, thrown into the flats, ran a touchdown or for that matter got close to sitting on the bench in a real game on Sundays. Oh, you never have and never will. Ok you are just wannabees. Now I understand you fascination with real players.

I’m not a Vick fan. I used to be a arve Fan. My Probem with Farve is that he can’t make up his mind to play ball or not. He wll cause much a prolbem with teams as Vick will because he is a short term asset to a long tem commitment.

Vick isn’t a leader, he can be a distraction; however, he does deserve a third chance to show he has charged. My biggest problem with Vick is that, apparently, he lied so much. He can quit dog fighting; however, lying is harder to quit.

Still I have lost all regard for Farve because of his wishy-washy decision making. He will end up costing the team he goes to (if he goes)good future quarterbacks until he realy retires.

Vick is going down, down, down. What goes around, comes around… Watch as the teams who were “supposedly” interested drop off from that list one by one. He’s getting what he deserves.

I think Vick would be a better choice. He been away, he’s thirsty, and he appears to be in great shape. Let’s not forget about his stats they speak for itself. He’s still young, has a great arm, he would be great for any team that’s in need of a great quarterback. He will definitely fill up the stadium. He deserves to be reinstated and given another oppty to play in the NFL.

As I said yesterday...

…it was a slow news day in sports when all you guys can come up with to write about is the former Atlanta QB who is still under house arrest. Shultz gave away the secret that you guys now have to write 3 blog topics a day to keep your jobs, but to “invent” OLD news about that guy is NOT topic worthy.

To keep on the topic i would have to go with Vince Young. Vick would be fun to watch but is the baggage worth it. Farve was a great QB in Green Bay, however there does come a time when you need to really retire. So this leaves Young. He still has a couple of good years left and a change of pace may do him some good.

OMG, the poster that said he would go with Vick, because Vince Young is “weird”?????? LMAO–And what do you call a millionaire who hung, drowned, electrocuted, fought, starved, and beat dogs to death for his fun? Unreal–

So the author of this article would pick MV too?? And he would be a fool. MV was NEVER worth a —-as a QB, and he certainly isn’t going to improve once an entire stadium is booing and trashing him. He couldn’t handle a few boos, remember, without flipping the fans the finger, I don’t think he could cope when an entire stadium was directing their disgust directly at him. As it should be. MV should fade away into obscurity, which is actually BETTER than what he actually deserves.

Mark Bradley has gone off the deep end. Sick Vick playing for any team would be a nightmare. The qb is the face of a team, who wants a convicted animal abuser as the face of their team? Brett Farve is far too confused about what he wants to do, I’d have to go with Vince Young. And Marsha, I agree with you, the poster that said Vince Young is too “weird” so they would go with Michael Vick has a screw lose himself. That’s absolultely laughable that anyone would be so much a moron as to post that statement.

Assuming salary cap issues were not in play, I’d sign Vick. I’d have Vick stand on a podium beside me and I’d make a public statement that I’m an owner who believes in giving someone who is contrite and who’s learned from his mistakes a second chance. I’d then have Vick say he was sorry and that all he wants to do now is be a good citizen and play football for the people in that city, whatever role it might be, starter or backup or water boy.

Then I would announce that the football team is a family. The players are a family, the coaches are family, the fans are family — and the family will stand together as one. If someone chooses not to stand with them, then they are against the family. Then I’d close with this statement.

‘Fredo, you’re my older brother, and I love you. But don’t ever take sides with anyone against the Family again. Ever. “

With Vick if you stand as a family you will at some point fall as a family. He’s proved that by almost destroying an NFL franchise. Had it not been for Blank, TD, and Smith drafting the right players Vick may have succeded.

With that said, If I was choosing one of those QB’s, I would just try to get by til the draft.

That’s like trying to pick your favorite method of torture. But I suppose if I absolutely had to pick one of the three, I’d go with Young. Sure, he’s not as talented as Vick, but he doesn’t come with the baggage. Favre is just a dinosaur that no longer has the ability to carry his team like he did 10 years ago. The fact that he’s a diva just cements the decision. So yeah, give me Vince Young and let me see if I can teach him and help him grow into his full potential.

PMC

Of the 3 if you are forced to make a choice for this year Vince is the only real option and I’m not sure that’s a great one either. Farve can’t do it anymore. Vick is too much of a question mark at this point unless you had a QB in place already to find out what you had or let him learn.

Vick could have been so incredible. He had so much talent and ability. If he worked half as hard on being a QB as being a dog breeder he could have been a hall of famer. Unfortunately even if he comes back and he’s the same. He’s still not that accurate and he still doesn’t throw a really catchable ball. One of if not the most athletic people I’ve ever seen and he was athletic enough to bring high school sand lot to the NFL which is something to say in itself but as much as I wished it… he’s just not a great QB.

Of the three you listed – Vick. I liked to watch Vick play, I was disgusted with what he did and that he lied about it made it even worse.

Bottom line – he has paid the price society set for his transgressions, so move on. I would say he does deserve another chance, but not a blind one – keep a close eye on him until he can prove himself one way or the other.

Having said all of that, he is the QB that would give you the best opportunity to move forward if all of your other options went away, of the three you have listed.

Vick or Favre or Young ? OH, MY!

Well, let’s see…

- One is a convicted felon and inarticulate buffoon who knowingly infects women with STDs, tortures animals, runs illegal interstate gambling operations and cannot read a playbook or opposing defenses. On the bright side, however, this individual can no longer vote, (legally) possess a firearm or run for public office.

- One is a FORMER champion and over-the-hill graybeard who has a VERY had time making up his mind and is in suspect health.

- One is a collegiate champion, yet lacks maturity and mental & emotional stablility who make commit suicide by the end of the preseason.

Hmmmm…..

It’s amusing to me how the large majority of comments/reasoning for decisions here have almost nothing to do with how well each PLAYS. Last I checked, that’t why you hire a QB, to play.

IMO it depends on the type of team you are tyring to build. If you are building a fast offense that relies on deception, like Oakland (supposedly) is doing, then Vick or Young. If you have a very solid run game, but you need a QB that is great at reading defenses and adjusting, thereby preventing defenses from loading up on that run game to the point that they get burned if the QB audibles out of it — what the Vikings have — then it’s Favre, hands down.

…in other OTA news, Favre overslept practice, citing his need for pain-killers made him drowsy, and when he finally awakened he was further delayed by not being able to make up his mind to stop eating eggs, or to eat eggs for one more year. He has until Sunday morning to let us know if he will meet us at Waffle House for egg breakfast or not.

Vick reported, but was quickly sidelined for an apparent injury due to electric shock from his sweat getting into his designer “TI” ankle bracelet.

Vince Young, sadly, is ruled inactive. He had another mental relapse and thought that HE was actually Michael Vick, and is being investigated by NOW for allegedly sponsoring cat fights while drinking shots with other topless men.

Favre’s obviously had by far the best career of the three, but his arm is no longer what it used to be, and any team that thinks he can lead them to a Super Bowl at this point is kidding themselves. If this was 2002 he would be the answer, but it’s 2009, and he’s not.

Young has half the talent of Vick in every area except for height, has proven that he can’t deal with adversity, and like Bradley said hasn’t accomplished much in this league.

Of the three Vick is easily the best option at this point.

Vick Supporter 2, just find a new blog and a new team. Wait until MV7 is somewhere, and become a fan of that team. If you can’t get behind the Falcons and Matt Ryan, then just wait until MV7 plays somewhere. You know, when Vick was drafted, and a lot of my friends complained that the Falcons were making a mistake, I told them to either be Falcon fans or don’t be. Cheer for them or find a new team. I make the same invitation to you.

By the way, what did Matt Ryan ever do to you? Did your girl tell you she thought he was hot or something. All he did as a rookie was take a team with the 24 ranked defense the playoffs (Leaf NEVER did that in at least 5 years in the league). Give him a chance before you crucify the guy for not winning a playoff game. Like I said earlier, Manning didn’t win a playoff game until his 6th season, and he had already won an MVP by then.

Sid

Of the 3 the only one I wouldn’t have on my team is Vick. He is a terrible NFL quarterback. He has no touch and couldn’t hit an open receiver with a catchable ball from 2 yards away. When was the last time a running quarterback won the Super Bowl? The only one who might be in that category would be Steve Young, and he was basically a drop back passer who could use his legs to avoid the rush. ALL Vick can do is run, and you don’t win Super Bowls with 3 running backs and NO quarterback. With Vick in the game you’re 2 wide receivers become non-factors unless they are great blockers. That’s why defenses could load the box because they weren’t worried about him completing many passes. A running quarterback can be a superstar in high school and college, but that doesn’t cut it in the pros.

Hey Titletown USA, would you be from Valdosta, Ga.? I am thats why I asked. Now I would take Vince Young slightly over Mike Vick but then again Vick has pro bowl appearances so it would be Vick. Farve is overhyped and has been the last six years, needs to retire. It’s amazing how people are so negative against Vick and the dog situation when hockey players have killed the person riding in their car because he was drunk driving right here in Atlanta. It amazes me how Vick is continually being thrown under the bus but a hockey player can kill his friend and people didnt uproar as extreme. But I take Vick.

Pop: Would you get off that people don’t like Vick because of the way he “looks.” If that were the case, 85% of the NFL players would disliked because of the way they “look”. No, they don’t look like me, number 1 because I’m a woman. Get over the race thing every time something negative is said about him, I for one just don’t like the guy. I don’t think think he worked hard enough and was not a team player, thought the same thing about Jeff George, so its not a race thing. If you are p.o’d because Vick isn’t playing, that’s fine, just don’t blame other people for it, blame Vick. Vick Supporter 2: You don’t known squat about what Matt Ryan will or won’t do in the NFL. Why do you hate him, because he doesn’t look like you? He had nothing to do with Vick’s situation so get over it and give the guy a chance. If he sucks in the future, fine, but he did fine last year so get off it.

3rd choice – Vince Young. Where is his head?
2nd choice – would be Favre because he can manage a game but his INT’s seem to be a problem. I do not think he has realized that his arm strength is not what it used to be.
1st choice – Vick. The strongest arm of the three. Defenses must change to compensate for his running.
As far as the lie he told. Everyone on this blog has told a lie.
That’s like drinking a beer with some friends on your porch and the police drive bye and ask are you guys drinking alcohol in public.
A) Say yes = go to jail
b) Say no = Police come to investigate and you go to Jail.
Say no = Police continue to ride by.
I’m choosing b all day and take my chances.
If I were speeding and the police asked how fast was I going, I’m going to ask what is the speed limit. Whatever is the speed limit is how fast I was going.
Im not going to say “I mus not tell a lie and yes officer I was speeding”. I was doing 57 mph on I285. Please bestow my citation upon me.

Reality Time,

Get back in the kitchen. Mike Vick was MORE than a team player because if you know ANYTHING about football you would know that Mike Vick carried that entire offense(some would say defense too) on his BACK! He wasn’t afforded the opportunity to play with a pro-bowl running back, WR and a decent offensive line. Roddy White couldn’t catch a cold before last year. Now go cook something!!

Sorry Joe, cant’ go back in the kitchen right now, unlike you, I work. As to knowing football, I actually know quite a bit about it and I know that Michael Vick was never known for his work ethic or putting time in the film room. Natural talent will only get you so far, working at it will always make you better. It’s amazing to me that a wide receiver who had been average at best is suddenly a pro bowler under a new quarterback. Not everything is a coincidence.

Roy B, apparently you have mistaken me for someone else. I said nothing about pit bulls or dog fighting or anything relating to that. I said nothing about misdemeanors, felonies or anything else. As to perjury, what does that have to do with a dog fighting. Perjury in itself is a crime, whether you have committed a crime yourself or not. Lie under oath to protect someone else, that is perjury. If you want to disagree with me, fine, but disagree with what I said not with your standard come backs about Vick.

Reality Time..no everything is not a coincidence, which is why Roddy pointed out what HIS work ethic was before the 2007 season…oh and 2007 was his first 1,000 yard season with 3 different QBs…why? Not because of the QBs, but because HE decided to actually get serious..by his own admission. He credited Petrino with his change in attitude and work habits. He dropped weight and stopped eating at Mickey D’s three times a day. So go take your “coincidence” and stuff it, it doesn’t apply here.

All I hear is he lied to Arthur, he lied to the commish. Mike was hoping that he was going to get past this. At that point it was not a lock that he would be implicated.

Why does everything have to be reduced to attacking bloggers personally for having a different opinion. I have said nothing derogatory in response to anyone who has implied that I am stupid because I am a woman, that my opinion of Michael Vick’s football playing ability is based on his dog fighting, what kind of dog I would or and whether you should lie to the police, none of what relate to anything I have said.

Vick did not commit “perjury” PERIOD. Its not an opinion that Roddy White credits his development to Petrino and that he decided to get serious about his career, its what HE SAID in interviews on espn and aol sports. SID – I understand your point. On the blog you have racist who will call any black athelete that gets a parking ticket a thug. Someone on this blog actually called Vince Young a thug. I can’t recall Vince in any trouble. Someone needs to look this up as the definition does not apply to Vick either.
Then you have the hypersensitive people that everything boils down to race, then you have the hypocrits who act like they done nothing.

I have to disagree a bit on your assesment of vick as a QB for now. The situation he was in was not the best to gauge if he can actually be an elite QB. He was decent under Reeves but then Mora was hired with that experimental offense and there have been quite a few drops even by Roddy White.
He has the tools and remember he was rushed into his role with limited college experience. Some people state he is too short but Drew Brees is about the same height so it can be done.
So my opinion on Vick is he is the most exciting QB to play the game but as an elite QB, the jury is still out until he is put into a real system.

Vick was never a team player and was more concerned with putting on a one man show. Young has too much emotional baggage. If I felt my team could win it all immediately with an experienced quarterback then there’s no competition. Favre. This one’s not even close enough to debate. Move along, folks.

It’s entertainment time, so it has to be Vick. Don’t know how long it will take for him to play himself into some kind of shape, probably 4 games. The biggest football related problem he was starting to have was the “spy” the defense was putting on him….couldn’t do those fancy runs much after that.
But he would be a lot more fun to watch than the other two. Watch those TV ratings go up!

“Vicktory To The Underdog” takes an in depth look at world renowned tattoo artist “Brandon Bond” and his dog rescue efforts – particularly rescuing the infamous Michael Vick fighting dogs.
Rather than focusing on the dog fighting problem, the movie sheds light on solutions leading to “Vicktory” for all the underdogs in the movie – tattoo people, pitbulls, parolees and all the other people in this world that society has turned their back on through ignorance and racism.
The movie also examines the life of Brandon Bond and his struggle with balancing fame, fortune and the Rock-N-Roll tattoo lifestyle with a more fulfilling life that focuses on the betterment of both animals and society as a whole.
Featuring celebrities like Debbie and Danny Trejo, Michael Berryman, Pixie Acia and Donal Logue, the movie takes you on an incredible journey you will never forget!

Proceeds for this film will be going to Villa Lobos Pitbull Rescue. http://www.vrcpitbull.com

June 11 (Bloomberg) — Venture capitalist and United Football League founder Bill Hambrecht said Michael Vick deserves a second chance to play football after serving jail time on charges related to dogfighting.

Calling Vick “probably the best football player in America,” the chairman of the securities firm W.R. Hambrecht & Co. said fans want to watch the suspended former National Football League quarterback and that Vick could have a place in the new league, which is scheduled to begin playing in October.

“He has paid his penalty,” Hambrecht, 73, said in a television interview. “What we did is we went out to our fan base and said ‘what do you think?’ And on our Web site, people want to see him. People believe he deserves a second chance.”

He said Vick “took his punishment like a man.” The 28-year-old former Pro Bowl quarterback for the Atlanta Falcons is under home confinement as he completes a 23-month sentence for helping to run a dogfighting ring.

“I respect the guy, I really do,” Hambrecht said in a separate interview. “This is a guy brought up in the neighborhood, and you know, you always lie to the cops. You know how that works. When confronted with it, he took his penalty.”

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell indefinitely suspended Vick from the league in August 2007 and said he would review Vick’s status after the legal process concluded.

Hambrecht was an early investor and underwriter for companies such as Apple Inc. and Genentech Inc. He later formed W.R. Hambrecht, which has co-managed auction-style initial public offerings including those for Google Inc. and Morningstar Inc.

Of the 3 listed I would have to pick Vick. While I’m not thrilled with his overall QB skills, I believe he can be used in other areas of the field (e.g. slot receiver). I would really want to see what his foot speed is like though. Without it, his value greatly diminishes.
Farve, one of the toughest to ever play the game, is just too old. The good games he has left in him are far overshadowed by the bad ones he’ll play.
I haven’t seen enough of Vince Young. No doubt he has talent, but sometimes his decision making (on & off the field) is questionable.

I would have to go with Mike Vike…… I mean come on now, the guy is an all around player. He not only can throw the ball, he can run the ball as well as he isn’t afraid of getting hit. Plus, he took a team that hasn’t seen a SuperBowl ever to their very first one. Even though they lost, he still took them to the first SuperBowl ever. Mike deserves a second chance and I wished that Atlanta wouldn’t have had dropped him. He could have been a second string and worked his way back up, but I just wished that Atlanta wouldn’t have dropped him.

I really can’t believe the Falcons released Vick! Bad move. He owes the Falcons money. His rights belonged to the Falcons for several more years. They don’t have to pay him as long as he’s under indefinate suspension by the NFL and don’t have to carry him on the active roster. Just as soon as the league reinstates him, if they do, another team WILL take the chance and sign him for his athletic ability. Vick still had some value to the Falcons, even if it’s just making sure he sits and can’t go play for a competitor in the same division or conference. If reinstated, you know we could have at least gotten some draft picks for him. If they wanted to be vindictive, the Falcons could sit on him and make sure by the time that contract period was over Vick never stepped foot on an NFL field. He could have been inactive for years, thereby being worthless to another team.
The Falcons gave this guy boucous millions and in return MV7 (a.k.a Ron Mexico) made Mr. Blank look like a fool in front of the entire nation more than once. He constantly lied to the man who was signing his checks, spoon feeding him, pushing him around in a wheelchair and playing daddy to him, smiling all the while as he smoked blunts, spread social diseases, fathered illegitimate children, blew millions on his posse and ‘raised dogs’. At the moment, it was costing the Falcons nothing to sit on on him. They should have done it until he was reinstated by the NFL.

It is amazing how many people hate Mike Vick, because he participated in dog fighting, lied to his boss, reportedly gave someone an STD. How many of us with time, money and youth would be the shining example of morality that seems to be expected of this young footbal player. We should keep in mind that these are athletes, entertainers, not priests or policemen, or even politicians. Michael Vick was probably the best thing to happen to Falcons football in the history of the franchise. And not because he was an elite quarterback. Because people watched him.
He put behinds in the seats and provided an extraordinary show when he was on the field. He has paid his debt. unless he is currently in trouble, i believe he should be allowed to play. Currently, what he is able to do on the field should be the only question. he has already been punished for his actions. if he is denied, the nfl will be ignoring a great asset to the sport.
