College football 2009: Tech wins the ACC, Georgia loses four

OK, so I’m a big fat homer, but I’m an equal-opportunity homer. In last year’s long-range college football predictions, I picked Georgia to win the BCS title. This time I’m picking Georgia Tech …

• To take the ACC championship. I believe Paul Johnson when he says his stylized offense will be ever better, and I note the key game on Tech’s conference schedule — Virginia Tech on Oct. 17 — will be staged at Bobby Dodd Stadium. Because I think there’ll be some days when the Jackets fumble 10 times or it rains or something, I’m guessing they’ll lose twice. (At Florida State and, believe it or not, at Vandy.) But they’ll go 10-2 and beat FSU in a rematch for the ACC title.

• I see Georgia losing four games. If that sounds like a lot, recall that the star-studded 2008 team lost three, and — stop me if you’ve heard this already — Matthew Stafford and Knowshon Moreno are gone. Joe Cox won’t be as good as D.J. Shockley was in 2005, but he’ll be OK. Replacing Moreno will be more problematic. And there’s still the Willie Martinez factor. The losses: At Oklahoma State and Tech, to LSU at home and (duh) in Jacksonville.

• Tennessee will finish fifth in its division. Welcome to the SEC, L’il Kiffy. Go recruit some more.

• Alabama got ahead of itself last season, peaking in that first half in Athens. Without John Parker Wilson and Glen Coffee and (especially) Andre Smith, the Tide will ebb just a bit. Bolstered by Les Miles’ deft hire of John Chavis to run his defense, LSU will win the SEC West.

• Auburn will finish fifth in its division. Welcome back to the SEC, Gene Chizik. Your limo awaits.

• Florida will win the East. Florida will win the SEC title. Florida will not, however, win the national championship.

• Florida will score 63 points against Tennessee on Sept. 19. The Urban Crier will call three timeouts in the final 30 seconds. And he won’t say he’s sorry.

• Ole Miss, picked in many preseason top 10s, will disappoint. Arkansas, led by that bastion of stability Bobby Petrino, will surprise. The man can coach. (FYI, I almost picked Georgia to lose in Fayetteville on Sept. 19. But I chickened out.)

Which of Bradley's predictions is the silliest?

View Results

Loading ... Loading ...

• Tim Tebow won the 2007 Heisman Trophy. Sam Bradford won it in 2008. Both are still playing college football. Neither will win the 2009 Heisman. Colt McCoy will.

• Tech’s Jonathan Dwyer will finish fifth in the Heisman voting.

• The national championship game will be staged in Pasadena. One of the qualifiers will enter unbeaten and ranked No. 1 and hugely favored to claim a second consecutive BCS title. Yes, this is beginning to sound like January 2006 all over again, and here’s where it gets eerie. Because …

• The team awaiting this colossus will again be Texas, which will again be undefeated itself and which will again be afforded little chance. And again the Longhorns will win a game for the ages, with their quarterback (McCoy this time, channeling Vince Young) outplaying the other team’s star (Tebow in this case; in 2006 the bigger names were Reggie Bush and Matt Leinart of Southern Cal). The final score will again be 41-38. I apologize for not being more specific.

I really wish Bradley hadn’t picked Tech to win the ACC. His track record has been really poor lately.

You missed what I think will be the strangest event of the season. Oklahoma will meet Ohio State in the Fiesta Bowl, and after playing 10 overtimes both teams will agree that the game should end a tie because neither program is good enough to ever win a major bowl game.

There’s a reason Ohklahoma and Nebraska dropped the option-based offense some time ago. We will be reminded again in 2009.

Hope you’re right about GTech and uga, Mark! Barring injuries, the Jackets can be #1 in ACC. I hope the doggies lose more than four, but thats a fair prediction. By the way, I knew you were wrong last year. Over-rated pups were just not that good.

Hahahaha. Mark really thinks Texas can put up 41 on UF. Thats laughable. Mccoy is a fine QB , but they are very one dimensional. You cant beat a team like UF throwing the ball every down , and rely on Mccoy scrambling against UF’s front. In other words if the Defense knows you’re going to pass it means trouble. Nice try though Mark.

Not saying it’ll happen but if it does, is Richt on the hot seat of UGA goes 8-4 or 9-3 (including losses to UF and GT)?

There is a reason, genius, that Oklahoma and Nebraska dropped the option and it had nothing to do with ineffectiveness. Care to guess the reason. My blog handle and the words Social Security, AARP and pension should provide clues.

The only way Richt is on the hot seat is if he takes a spin in Auburn’s limo and turns on the seat-warmer. (Heh, heh.)

You missed it on Ole Miss. This is their home field advantage year and they take the West. Jevon Snead is the real deal, even without Michael Oher. They will miss Peria Jerry but Greg Hardy will be SEC defenensive player of the year. Nutt out-coaches Petrino any day. Don’t think Ole Miss’ll beat FLA, but noone else will either, Texas/Okla/Ohio St included.

Nebraska and Oklahoma dropped the option offense because the coaches moved on not because the defenses caught up to it. It’s a tribute to Paul Johnson that you are referring to Tom Osborne and Barry Switzer. Two of the most prolific and winningest coaches in history!

But unfortunately, this article means that none of those events will now occur.

Richt will never be on the hot seat, because most UGA fans are smitten with him and don’t have the fire to aspire for more. Seriously, with all the talent in this state, they should be a contender for the NC every season, but their potential never equals their underachieving results. Blame the coaching, but above all else, blame the fan apathy that continues to tolerate overmatched coaching.

NOBODY will score 41 on fla.

David: THe answer is NO.

I am no tech fan but the “O” that they ran last year was pretty successful. I think they, as techies state over and over, will be better this year. I still don’t see them winning the ACC. My guess would be VaTech.

UGA will be 9-3. We know there will be the loss to fla, the other two could be from LSU, sc, a wierd one from tenn. I do not believe they will lose to tech, no matter how good they are.

I also like the McCoy pick for the Heisman.

Mark, great predictions for the most part. Very bold with the Georgia Tech at 10-2 and winning the ACC, but with the expectations being exceeded last year I would say 10-2 is fair. Georiga will lose around 4 games I believe.

Enough of taking jabs at Kiffin. Tennessee might surprise some people. You have to realize there are plenty of UT fans in Georgia. I love Tech and Tennessee. I’ll be happy with 6-6 or 7-5, but I don’t think they’ll have another year like last year. It cannot get any worse. Why don’t you talk about how Urban Meyer complains and cries to the SEC commissioner when he doesn’t get his way? Nobody ever talks about that. I guess winning the NC gives you the ability to be the biggest baby in the SEC.

I look forward to your next Hawks post as well! Keep it coming!

Mac, no one cares about Fake GSU football. Tech will not win the ACC. They are not better than Florida State (were not last year either, they recovered a Marcus Sims fumble to win), Virginia Tech or Miami (they will be better, like it or not).

Georgia does lose 4 times and then the Georgia fans will be clamoring for the days of David Greene. Aaron Murray will be taking snaps by Week 5 by the way.

In no way will Texas score 40 on anyone outside of the Big 12. How many DBs got drafted from the Big 12 this year? That’d be one, Darcel McBath out of Texas Tech. There are not enough good Defensive backs in teh Big 12, they are plenty in the Big 10, Big East, ACC and SEC.

Alabam will win the west Ole Miss will come in second. Florida will win the east, with GA coming in second, Tenn third. No Texas won’t and cannot beat Florida. Get a grip Mark please. Albama will beat Fla in the SEC championship, and go on to win the National title.

Or maybe its blind support that we hold the overall lead by more than 20 games, depending on how many losses you want to forget about! That is not blind support, but domination. How on earth do you pick an LSU team that won only 3 conference games last year to all of a sudden win the west when they have to play both Ole Miss and Bama on the road, they play UGA on the road, and they play Florida while Ole Miss and Bama both get to avoid both UGA and Florida?

Doesn’t seem like you looked at the schedule on this one. LSU could be a better team than both Ole Miss and Bama and still not win the west just because their schedule is so brutal. And I just can’t see them beating UGA in Athens. Nope. I just don’t see it.

I think UGA wins 10 or more games again so I think you’re a little off on the dawgs. But I do agree that Tech will be very good and I expect them to win the ACC. When the 2 of them get together I think it’ll be a helluva game with 2 10 win teams coming into the game.

Everything else I think you’re dead on right. My prediction is that Ole Miss is a lot better than you think and that they have a good chance of winning the west.

Overall it’ll probably be Texas and UF for all the chips.

Tech would get zero publicity if it wasn’t for UGA. They should be thanking us. Sure, the AJC will occasionally throw them a bone and do a story on them, and that’s cute. But on a national level? Please. Tech gets no love from major media outlets in terms of news. They’ll have to become relevant first, which is going to take 20 straight wins against UGA. Also, FSU and Miami will have to take complete nose-dives in order for Tech to help its case. Even though these two programs haven’t been good recently, they still get more coverage than Tech because nobody gives a crap about the rest of the ACC. Period.

MB : You think the Mildcats of ol’ Kentuck will break the 25 year spell UT has on them..? 5th in the East..? I’ll bet you a 1.75 liter if Ripple it won’t be so. And don’t forget, Suitcase Saban went, what, 6-6 in his first year at Bama..? ‘Course, he did have a QB to work with. Now, where can I buy Ripple in 1.75 liter bottles..?

Did you cut and paste that? Do you know how to do that Volman? I did reread it and you stated that since tech won they were the better team. You associated the win with your statement. I just stated FSU was a better team regardless of that outcome. Would you say Ole Miss is better than Florida?

Volman,

Your team has had two 5 win seasons in the past 4 years. UGA has won an SEC title and has won 40 games in those same four years. Do you really want to continue comparing the status of the 2 programs? Down years at UGA under richt involve 9 wins. Down years at UT are losing records, hillbillies calling for coach’s heads and a toothless fan base screaming on Sunday night call in shows.

Want to keep going?

GT will beat Ga, again this year. Texas will play and beat Fla for NC and McCoy will win the Heisman.

It’s funny that VOLMAN is calling UGA rednecks. Go make some more moonshine and count your teeth again or better yet count your wins last year.

Hey Volman – UGA is a joke huh?? That’s funny. Last I heard, Lame Kitten and his little circus buddies weren’t only the laughing stock of the SEC, but also the laughing stock of the NCAA! You got a new clown in town, so get used to the Pumpkins being carved out like a Halloween jack-o-lantern! Urban will own you, Saban will own you, Richt will have another Soulja Boy dance lined up for you, and even your buddies across the street, VANDY, will make you wish that Fulmer was still there!
UGA is a joke! HAHAHAHAHA. Your a joke, Volman!

Ole Miss and Bama stand the best chances of going undefeated. Before you flame me its all in the schedule.

UGA’s strength this year will be where they were weak last year, the lines on both sides of ball. They maybe this year’s Bama surviving on dominating the line of scrimmage.

McCoy hangs 40 on the SEC champ in a title game? The only time that has been done was Nebraska against UF. The SEC has heard about these pass oriented teams for ages, from Bama Miami 92, Hawaii vs UGA, to OU UF last year or even Ole Miss and Tx Tech last year. My guess is McCoy will be picking himself up off that pretty Rose Bowl field.

Thanks for picking GT maybe Corso will too.

Will he call plays using an xBox controller?

First of all, preseason predictions are useless. Secondly, UGA football always performs well when least expected. Thirdly, no offense Mark, but you seem to put a curse every prediction you make, which makes me wonder if as a homer, you did this on purpose.

Oooh, a lesson on preseason predictions from a dawg fan.

I guess they mean nothing when your team isn’t preseason national champs. I recall slightly different talk out of Athens during last years preseason.

Volman sounds an awful lot like PaulC who I think has gone underground. I will give a little more credit to the Vols as I think they may actually end up 7-5 and go to the…Gator Bowl! HAHA. Gators will be tough to beat, maybe LSU at night in the Bayou, but if they get to the NC game they will NOT be beat…Meyer has got THAT preparation down to a science! I do see UGA at 8-4, just ahead of Tenn and SC (tied) and I DO see GT down here in Tampa in the ACC Champ game in December…and that UF vs Tenn score sounds about right…GO GATOR!!!
