As Michael Vick’s new life begins, hope remains. Yes, hope.

He’s not quite free and clear, but he’s out of prison. That’s a start. Michael Vick can begin to get on with the rest of his life, and we should wish him well. Because he’s not some demon. He’s a human being who made dire mistakes.

And he continues to pay for them. He’ll wear an ankle bracelet. He can’t go to a bar. He can’t vote. He’ll need to earn his way back into the good graces of Roger Goodell and the American public, and it won’t be easy. But there’s a story waiting to be written, a story as uplifting as these past two years have been deflating.

Michael Vick needs to talk to us, and soon. He needs to tell us he’s sorry and that his time behind bars has changed him, made him wiser, redoubled his determination not to mess up the rest of his life. He needs now to throw himself on the mercy of the American public and see how merciful it can be.

Because a lot of people would be willing to forgive him. (Not to forget, but to forgive.) I know. I’m among them. But he has to ask.

Understand: Vick wasn’t a victim of runaway justice. He admitted his crimes and has paid a price almost beyond measure. But his life isn’t over, and so long as life remains there’s the possibility of redemption. He’s 28. He has time. He can change our perception yet again.

Sorry, there are no polls available at the moment.

He deserves the chance to play football. PETA will protest, but PETA is famous for overplaying its hand. (Have Vick submit to a brain scan? Who’s writing this stuff – Joe McCarthy? Arthur C. Clarke?) If he finds an owner willing to absorb the backlash, he can make us remember why it was we came to notice Michael Vick. Contrary to revisionist history, he’s not a bad quarterback. Three Pro Bowls, as I recall.

He won’t be playing here, and that’s for the best. He needs a restart, and the Falcons have a different quarterback. But that doesn’t mean we can excise his name from team annals. Vick rekindled the flame when this franchise had gone cold. He made us care. That’s why it hurt so deeply to see him fail.

And it wasn’t Vick the player who failed. It was Vick the person, Vick the stealth dogfighter, the Vick nobody around here saw. (You say you knew he was a bad guy all along? On what evidence? The water bottle? Please.) His failure loosed a deluge of racial back-and-forth that missed the point, for this was never about a demographic profile. This was about one man and his misdeeds, one man who owned a city but went to jail.

And now he’s out. And now he can move forward, and so can we. Amid all the motion, here’s a hope that he gets it right from now on, so right that in five years we’ll see Michael Vick not as a fallen idol but as an indomitable soul who triumphed over abject disgrace.

Yes, he did wrong. But after all that has transpired, Michael Dwayne Vick has it within him to do right. I’ve been disappointed in him, but I’m not yet ready to give up. Not on this one. There’s a heart in there somewhere, a good heart. I believed as much on that sorrowful day he entered his plea, and I believe it still.

No doubt, the one who feels the most for his actions is Vick, I sincerely wish him the best (for all that’s worth). If Mr. Vick is reading this, all I can say is get rid of the negative people around you that are bringing you down. That can be said for all of US! Go Falcons!

Bradley, he doesn’t need to say a dadgum thing, because he has already proven that he is a pathological liar. If he wants to gain the respect of the public, he needs to let his actions speak for themselves, over a number of years. Personally, I think once a piece of trash, always a piece of trash. I don’t expect much to change with Vick.

My dog is a valued member of our family. He is like a child to us. He is a companion to my family and our daughter.

What Michael Vick did was wrong. There is no doubt about it. But his sentence was jail time. He did that time. As long as he honors his probation commitments; it is time to let him get on with his life.

His sentence did not read ” And you shall be hounded by PETA forever and never be allowed to make a living in your career of choice.”

Time to let the man get on with his future with his family, his children. Hoping he has learned from this mistake(s).

He is not the first person to disgrace this city, yet this city has moved on. He is not the first falcon to disgrace his team, yet the falcons have moved on. He has disgraced himself, and been humbled. And paid dearly with his fame, fortune, and possibly his future. But he has paid. Now let the man move on.

It would be nice if people would, in fact, stop projecting their troubles onto this still-young man. He is not a sign of “all that is wrong in our society” or a “victim of racial injustice,” he is a very talented person who indulged in a sport our culture rejects and views as barbaric. (On the other hand, we admire bullfighters and rodeo riders and hunters and fishermen, whose sports also injure animals).

He paid his price, so let him play if he is good enough to play.

As for apologies, he does not owe me any apology.

Funny…the same paper that worked so hard to throw this man on the bus now says “…he’s not some demon. He’s a human being who made dire mistakes.” Couldn’t tell by reading your paper for the past two years. The AJC was the ring leader in the circus! You were the ones who demonized him in the first place. Mick Vick has served his time. Let him go home and rebuild his life and reconnect with this family. Stop the media circus already, please.

I wish Michael Vick all the luck in the world. He doesn’t owe me an apology. We are way to judgemental. He needs to ask God for forgiveness, not us. I really don’t feel he should have went to prison that long. He probably shouldn’t have went at all. PETA is played out and they are also way to judgemental. People will wish the worst for someone, but God always has the last say. Keep your head up Michael and may God bless you.

I am sorry but Vick isn’t guilty of tax evasion or cheating on his wife… He is guilty of large scale cruelty to animals for “fun and profit.” In my book, cruelty to animals is right up there with child abuse. You don’t have to be a member of some squirrely organization like PETA to be totally disgusted by Vick and his cronies. To say I will be very disappointed with the NFL if they accept him back under any circumstances would be serious understatement.

Mr. Bradley,

Thank you for writing such a compassionate column. It appears that your cohort Ms. Schultz wants nothing more than to see Michael Vick tared and feathered. In any event, the key to Vick’s success are threefold. First, he will need to live a disciplined and regimented life. He will no longer be given the benefit of the doubt. Faith, famliy and football need to be his priority. Second, he will need to limit the number of people he allows in his life. Outside of his immediate family (wife, children, mother, sister & bother and teamates) he should keep people at a distance. Lastly, he need to show a passion and committment to the game of football. If Vick plays at a high-level, all of his problems (legal, financial & PR) will be resovled and forgotten. I disagree about the apologizes. The people who HATE Vick will never be satisfied with an apology, they are out for blood.

I am glad he’s gone. Never was going to get us to the Super Bowl. Everyone says how great he was…He was good for sure, but he was a one man team, as we all saw when he got taken out of the equation. It takes a real team to win championships.

I am tired of hearing about Michael Vick. I hope he does well for himself and I wish him the best, but please…he’s NOT an Atlanta Falcon. Come on AJC bury the hatchet that is Michael Vick.

Mike Vick doesnot owe the American Public anything. Why wasn’t there any outrage or protests when Leonard Little and Danny Heatly were driving drunk and killed innocent HUMANS? There were no MADD, or SADD protests, no posters or signs of love ones who were killed by drunk drivers. Why is there no public outcry when countless athletes physically abuse their spouses, no domestic violence protests, nothing. But kill some damn dogs, that’s death by crucifixing. Lazy stay-at-home moms puting “I HATE VICK” shirts on their toddlers, and everyone who has sex with dogs instead of “HUMANS” wants him to apologize and make a public spectacle of himself, I don’t think so.

Yes, Michael Vick made a terrible mistake, but he has done his time and people need to stop hating on him. He without sin, please let him cast the first stone. No one is perfect and no this is not to justify his actions, but you may not have been charged for dog fighting, but what about all the other wrong things you have done you just didn’t get caught or charged with by the laws of the land. Everyone has a past and somewhere along the line we all have fallen short, so please stop the madness. Wrong is wrong, the is no big or little wrong….. WRONG is WRONG. It just happen to be that he was a public figure who fell short. He is not the first, nor will he be the last. Good luck to Mike Vick. He has served his time, is totally bankrupt and deserves a second chance. I really think he will have been humbled by this and will be a model citizen. He should be reinstated. I would not mind him coming back to the Falcons as a WR. However, I know that will not happen. Reinstate him, then in the late summer trade him for better than a 4th round pick. If he goes on to live by the straight and narrow this is a feel good story. If he goes on to act like an idiot, then we have another Chris Henry, Pacman, etc. No big deal. One strike and he is out.
I hope for the best for the guy.

Mark, how about the fact that he KNOWINGLY gave a woman HERPES!?!?

How about the photo with him and drug paraphanalia in the back of a limo?

How about the water bottle… which he LIED, LIED, LIED about? Then claimed the Miami Police, who’re doing EVERYTHING to let him off the hook, was FRAMING him???

And then how about the dispicable dog fighting? And his out-right refusal to tell the truth?

And then how about instead of actually showing some understanding of remorse or his position during his ridiculous bankrupcy hearing, Vick AGAIN proves he doesn’t get it by asking to keep all of his houses and most of his cars (HOUSES, not HOUSE) instead of selling them to pay down his debts???

Vick isn’t sorry for fighting, torturing, and killing dogs in a way that would make the Viet Cong blanche.

HE’S SORRY HE GOT CAUGHT!!!

And you, like Peter King, are just another bleeding-heart, soft-headed member of ObamaNation.

He has no RIGHT to play football. He has a right to seek work, but I hope the Commish suspends him for a year, and then after that year, I hope not even Jerry Jones would sign him.

Let him find work with other felons in construction or the fast food industry.

The last thing the NFL needs is this guy playing football. Let him go play in the UFL, and then fail with that league.

Terrell….we don’t want an apology for dog fighting…well at least not some of us. He lied to us man. It’s deeper than the surface you are ranting about. He let the whole entire city down for lieing, not fighting. He looked at everyone to do with his career and lied to them face to face, and he did us. He disgraced us. He flipped us off. He lied to us. That’s where the apology is warranted.

I know there are a lot of animal lovers who treat dogs with more respect than humans, and that is there sad choice. That is probably the most empathetic, compassionate blog to date on the subject. I agree with GA Peach’s 1st sentence in that God will be the ultimate judge. His forgiveness (not ours) is all that Vick needs. Asking us for our forgivenss make us feel better about the situation, but it isn’t mandatory. WE have to be careful not to fall into pride in feeling Vick needs to apologize to us in order for us to restore forgiveness (as if we have the ultimate power to do so). I just hope that for the people involved who have the sway to shape and control his future life (NFL, judges, local police) and influence opinion (media) don’t turn this into some power trip opprtunity to exercise excessively punitive and prejudicial behaviours towards him “just because they can”.
Mr. Bradley, I give you props for being person enough not to want to excoriate him ad infinitum from a bully pulpit (like many media bandwagoneers, and sensationalist personalites on radio and tv) for the crime and sin he committed.

Question: Who’s the most exciting player the Falcons have ever had? Vick. Question: Do you really want to play against this guy and have him possibly beat you? No. Solution: Keep him!! He’s paid his debt to society. He still owes the Falcons some money. Sign him and let him work it off (but not as a starting QB). He is better than our other choices at back-up QB. Or better yet, put him as a receiver/H-back. His productivity dropped as his decision-making got worse. Well, take that aspect of the game away from him. Let him use his speed at a position where he could still be a threat to throw. Mike Smith could borrow a few plays from Paul Johnson’s playbook!

Besides, what better PR story of redemption could their be than for Vick to come back in humilty, not attract attention to himself, do his job, playing for his old team?

This sounds like a win-winto me. Besides, we won’t get anything for him in a trade, and I’m not sure that we’ll ever get from him any of the money he owes us.

Let’s keep Michael Vick!

Ummmm……. didnt Micheal Vick make a very public and sincere apology right before his sentencing? How many times does he needs to apologize to make you people happy? And with the way that a lot of people feel about Mike Vick, he could become the next St. Francis of Assisi, and that still would not appease some of you people. Micheal Vick screwed up big time with his involvement in dogfighting….he went thru the humiliation, embarrassment, and the lost of a very lucrative lifestyle for something that he surely regrets. He had his share of haters even before this scandal broke, and regardless of what he does with his life from here on out, there will be those who will always dislike him. I personally think that he has a great opportunity before him, and I hope that he makes the most out of it, regardless of whether or not it involves playing football again, but he doesnt owe me, you, or anybody anything…..he paid his debt to society for what he has done……so PETA, and everybody else, please move on.

Mr. Bradley this was a very good piece written by you. People should look at the situation and move on, and give Mike a chance to redeem himself. The very people who are critical of him and are ready to condemn Mike for his actions either have done things that they hope never get out, or knows someone that has committed a similar act.I bet your support and love is still strong for that person.Only God is the real judge for Mike. He will have to work that out with him. Remember people he, is only a football player. Stop holding these people to such high esteem. They are not perfect, nor will they ever be. Mistakes will be made. You fans that have turned on MV must admit that he put The Atlanta Falcons back on the map and made them relevent. This is really not about football. This is about a young man getting his life back in order, an attempting to make a living for his family in his chosen field. My hopes are that he can come back and make a bad story in to a good story. Then i hope that you haters can look at that story and share it with someone on how you can change your life and rebound from such a mistake. The biggest problem with Vick is that he is not particularly bright, which leads to bad decisions and even worse people using him. And throw in a big dose of lack of maturity. He probably needs sympathy, but he’s not going to get it. It would be good if he could put a life together, but his hurdles are huge. I don’t see many positives for Vick in the future.

Excellent article, Bradley.

My two cents: Vick has been convicted and served his time. Now he will have to live with what he did for the rest of his life. People who hate what he did and do not want it forgiven or forgotten (whether PETA or others) can follow him around and remind all of what he did if they so choose. (However, if you are a religious person, then endlessly persecuting someone for their mistake or sin is not what faith teaches.)

Vick does not have a right to play in the NFL. Goodell, however, will likely have to reinstate him or be subject to a lawsuit given that Vick has paid his debt to society.

Vick can try to make a team if any team is willing to deal with the likely protests (large or small in number, it doesn’t matter). And I think it would be the highest form of hypocrisy for the NFL, Goodell, and the teams to allow persons to try out for their teams who have in their actions or negligence killed people but not allow Vick to do so.

First of all, let’s never put a higher premium on a dog’s life, compared a human being. Trust me, what he was involved was wrong. There’s no justification for what he did to promote this type of crime.
However, let’s put this in proper prospective. There’s a (current NFL) football player, that has actually killed a “human being” driving while intoxicated. And not too long afterwards, received yet another DWI.

So, while I feel that Vick has paid his debt to society. Let’s not forget that a son doesn’t have his mother, because of an “active” NFL football player.

Vick was and may still be immature, but he was never the menace to society that people have made him out to be. Prison should have matured him and made him appreciate what he lost. My bet is he will be a model citizen and will not have the lapses of stupidity that he had prior to this. Also, I am sure the dogfighting is over forever. I hope and believe he will be productive and a good player for whomever gives him a chance.
time will tell, but I have to remove my own plank before I can cast aspersions based on behavior.

He needs only to ask for forgiveness from Jesus Christ. When he forgives, there are no strings attached. Your slate is clean and he does not hold anything over your head. I was and still am one of the biggest Vick fans around, and I don’t feel the need for him to apologize or ask for forgiveness from me. I can’t save his soul and neither can anybody in America.

Great job Mark. Vick has paid a high price for his sins. 120 million, 2 years in jail, career is a ? mark, and most of all he has hurt alot of friends and fans who loved him. I’m not a PETA fan. They need to clean up their own back yard. They do more harm (in other ways) than good. Vick does need to apologize to his fans,Mr. Blank and Mr. Goodell. It takes a man to say I’m sorry. I believe # 7 will do that.

What kind of people are we that can’t forgive our fellow man?

Well written piece. Vick needs to address the public, not because he’s required to, but as a PR move. He needs to win back whatever good graces he can find. He committed a crime and he’s paid for it. He deserved what he got for what he did. But now he deserves a second chance, as long as he’s truly repentent.

I am so happy to hear that so many people have a forgiving heart because at one point I wasn’t so sure. I agree that what Vick did was wrong but he has paid the price: he served time, he lost everything he worked so hard for and was humiliated. It is time to forgive and let this man restart his life. He should not be condemned for the rest of his life and not afforded the opportunity to rebuild it. He should be allowed to play in the NFL again and show why we love him so much. Mike, I wish you all the best. I hope all of America gives you the opportunity to redeem yourself. To PETA, you know what you can do!!!!! Good Luck Vick! Falcons, I’m ready for another awesome season! Ryan, you did your thing last season, I’m ready to see more!

Yeah, I agree. He needs to be forgiven, and allowed to move on. Life as an ex-convict, is tough enough. Mike has paid a large debt to society, and he must be allowed to move on with his life as he choose. Everyone must remember this man has little children and a wife to support both spiritually and financially. He should not be a “public verbal punching bag”, for everyone to take a shot at. We all need a “2nd Chance” at some point in our lives. Let’s give him his 2nd Chance at Life. (Football will take care of itself. THINK ABOUT IT!!!

Would we wish a sex offender well when he exits jail? No, we would monitor him just as this sadistic psychopath should be closely monitored. This wasn’t “a mistake”; it was a pattern of vicious, inhuman behavior that reduced its participants to a more bestial status than the dogs they were torturing and killing.

Also, why does he “deserve” a second chance at the NFL? If a stock broker were caught embezzling funds from his firm or clients, he would never again be allowed back into that industry; if a lawyer is disbarred for a “mistake”, he would never again practice law.

Vick, like everyone else deserves a second chance. However, he deserves a second chance while being closely monitored and in some other field of endeavor than the NFL.

Greg – at least from my perspective, there is no racism. My favorite sports figures of all time are Henry Aaron and Bob Gibson. What concerns me is the erosion of the one thing that sports can offer that is truly valuable – a moral crucible where determination and character win out against self-interest and sloth. I feel there are “death-penalty” type offenses in sports – cheating (ban all steroid users for life), gambling on one’s own team (ban for life), etc. Vick has crossed many thresholds after being given chance after chance – his contempt for the fans was clear before the water bottle and the dog pens. Nothing good will come of letting him back into the NFL. Grave offenses should carry grave consequences.

And I would say – what about all the African Americans doing 20 years for drug offenses? These people are the ones who should not be jailed, the ones who will NEVER get a second chance. What about all the African Americans who are falsely convicted, perhaps even sitting on Death Row? What about them? Even when the state relents and they are set free – their lives are ruined.

Vick is a punk, was a punk, will always be a punk. He’s a disgrace to sports and a terrible role model for anyone, kids in particular. To the devil with him, which is where he belongs.

It has to be said..Frankly we know many of you didn’t like the fact that this guy was the most famous and largest FACE OF THE NFL. You can’t stand it, we know.

Secondly, there is more outrage over a stinking DOG than there is for these innocent children that get mowed down in the streets daily, by both the hoodlums in the community as well as the POLICE.

PETA wackos..why don’t you go make a big fuss about the greyhound racing industry who slaughters and abuse dogs like crazy because of lack of performance. The Kentucky Derby went on without a HITCH this year, YEP…after they MURKED a horse in plain view of everyone last year! Gotta keep the gamblin’ for the privileged going though I guess.

What about your grandfathers and fathers who proudly display their stuffed moose, dear and boar heads after MURKING those defenseless animals?? I’m sorry, we talking about the “upper crust” types now, and I’m talking from the social perspective.

Maybe we oughta have brain scans on all you SAVAGES that continually pack these MMA fight venues to watch two human beings almost pummel each other to death?

So now you basically want to see a man grovel and do a two step for you, hmmm kinda like the 50’s huh? Maybe it’ll make you feel powerful over him again?? He’s paid his debt to society, get over it.

Michael Vick, welcome back to society and best wishes and luck to you. Screw the haters, God forgives you, so you don’t need theirs. Put your nose to the grindstone and work your @$$ off to prove you are the player many knew you could be. You can and WILL be the face of the NFL again, mark my words. Hey Y’all;

Great article Mark. You appear to feel what I feel.

Vick gave us here in Atlanta, as Falcons fans, a lot to cheer about. He was one of us. He was a Falcon. We drafted him and he played admirably as any player the Falcons had ever had. Yes, he made a terrible mistake in hanging with “riff raff” friends from his childhood and he did not grow up. But I believe, for him personally, the dog fighting incident was a blessing in disguise. It allowed him to rid himself of those “negative hanger ons” and bad relatives and friends whose reason to be around Vick was to “mooch” off him and try to give him a guilty complex by not helping them because they were childhood friends and were poor together. However, they did not play nor sweat for Vick on the field in high school, college or the pros. He owes them nothing, and their behavior during this dog fighting incident only validates that. They snithched and lied on him for their own benefit. This is now a new beginning for Vick. However, I hope he surrounds himself with righteous people who believe in God. I hope, he himself, if not already, start believing in God and his “POWER”. I hope he understand that his life should be guided, BY GOD FIRST,and everyone and everything else , second: “SEEK YEE THE KINGDOM OF GOD FIRST, AND ITS RIGHTOUSNESS, AND EVERTHING ELSE SHALL BE ADDED”. I hope this brother follow this precept and “no weapon formed against him shall prosper.” including protests, arrogant opinions, etc. But first he must seek, have, and understand God and the place he puts GOD in his heart and life. Believe me, I believe this is a blessing for Mike Vick and I truly wish him well. I enjoyed his play as an Atlanta Falcon and he will always be a Falcon in my heart. But life moves on in Falconland. We wish you the best Mike Vick. May God Bless You in “ONE HEARTBEAT!!!!”.

I appreciate this column Mark as I feel the same way. I am glad you mentioned the amazing PETA brain-scan statements. I wish to never hear from that sorry organization. And I am a dog-lover and no-meat eater.

I am glad he reached out to the Humane Society for future work to discourage dog-fighting among the youth. That’s a far better organizataion to rehabilate his image and work off his bad karma.

For those here just for another chance to comdenn and judge and pile on, perhaps you should go read your bible or whatever good book you base your life on and reflect on your own failings and find some forgiveness and empathy for this man. Already the media is massing on his front doorstep, he is still paying for his mistakes and can’t get away from his every action being front-page news.

I am so sick of this stuff! Look, I went to VT when Mike was there, I loved watching him play in Blacksburg. I loved watching him play in ATL because I was born and raised here and have been a lifelong Falcon fan. Mike fought DOGS!!! Why is it that this man fought dogs, served his time in a federal prison, and has media and thousands of animal activist crazies outside of his house, but some girl in south-Fulton can kill 5 PEOPLE on Easter, flee the scene, get her car fixed, get bailed out a week later after being on the lam for almost a month, and has ZERO protesters at her house?!!! People your priorities are out of whack. If we had “Human Activist” groups that absolutely tormented and ruined people’s lives for doing crimes against other human–even after they’d paid their debt to the court–do you think murders and rapings would go down???

I’m not condoning what Vick did because what he did was horrible and completely beyond reproach. However, I am saying, leave him alone. If you want to protest someone, protest the girl involved in the hit and run (Aimee Michael). Protest the person selling drugs to your kids. Protest the sleazy politician who is using your tax dollars to buy prostitutes.

My only “Hope” for Michael Vick is that this monster is NOT able to give any more of his STDs to our beautiful, unsuspecting women or father any additional illegitimate children out of wedlock who have to live with the shame of having such an uncaring & utterly clueless drug user as their DNA donor. I agree with Leon. You haters out there will not get your blessing because you all want Vick to stay down forever. He has apologize for his actions, and if you did not hear it, it was because you were not listening. There is nothing wrong with loving your animals. However, where were all these negative comments and PETA when these dogs kill innocent children. You all are no where to be found and it does show that you value dogs or animals more than you do humans. I guess you haters are “SIN FREE” and have never made a mistake. Vick has apologized and that is all that he can do. As for as his return football, I hope the Commissioner does re-instate him. He needs a second chance just as everyone else would like another chance. He was great for the Atlanta Falcons when the team had no one coming to the games and he brought action with him, thus increasing the number of tickets. IT IS YOUR OWN PERSONAL FAULT IF YOU HAD VICK ON THIS HOLY THAN THY HEIGHT, HE IS FIRST A HUMAN BEING. He is not beyond mistakes, and neither are us. MICHAEL, I WISH YOU THE BEST AND HOPE SOME TEAM GIVE YOU A CHANCE. IF THE FALCONS WANT SOMEBODY ELSE WILL.

Get real people Vick was figured out long before he went to the slammer!

Now, I do hope that he does get his life back together and play football again but it’s not like he will be a dominating force. Owners can find alot of fast guys who can carry a ball and score a TD without the media destraction. Teams won in the NFL before Vick and continued to win when he was gone. The Falcons being the 1st team that comes to mind.

Outstanding article, Mark Bradley.

2/3 of ESPN.com users think Vick should be reinstated and allowed to play with no further punishment. 86% of ESPN.com users think he should get another chance to play at some point. Take note, Roger Goodell.

I’ll leave y’all with this. Sums up Vick’s career in Atlanta pretty well. Idiotic Greg Knapp play call leaves defenders in Vick’s face in the backfield, and despite this, Vick bails him out by turning a negative play into a positive.

The only problem is this same column was probably written many times while he was still in Atlanta… “he needs to show us he’s wised up, he needs to dump his lousy friends, etc, etc” and the mistakes kept coming. So if history is a guide he will not have learned his lesson. Of course Leavenworth could have changed that. But if I had to be on it, it will be the same old, same old.

Mark,
Thank you for a great article. Thank you for being human enough to forgive and move on. What I find so amazing after reading all of the comments posted here, is how unforgiving and judgmental people can be. First of all Vick owes us nothing. We as consumers, make choices regarding what we purchase, who we support and to whom we open ourselves up to and some of us chose to support Michael Vick. Yes, I think Vick was wrong on many levels and he should be ashamed. However, he has paid his price and deserves a second chance to redeem himself to his family, friends, supporters and most of all of to himself. Healing from within will be the hardest journey he will ever have to face and if he fails everything else around him will fail as well. That’s a process that only him and God can face regardless of what we think about him.
For those of you who are willing to forgive and allow Vick to redeem himself, congratulations you get it! For those of you who continue to make harsh judgments’ and call him disgraceful names shame on you. How about putting yourselves in his shoes for a moment. Suppose you lived your life in the public life. Suppose all of your dirty secrets (and we all have them) were listed on the front page of every news publication all over the world. How then would you react? If you were approached by a local newscaster about your wrongdoings would you admit to it immediately? How many of you cheat on your taxes or tell lies to your family or friends (or ever worse your children) and face them every day telling lie after lie. How many of you Vick haters support your local shelters or give to others less fortunate than yourselves. How many of you are outraged at the lack of protection for our children and the state of education in our society. Are we all doing our part to help create change?
Where are these hateful remarks when other high profile athletes are in trouble almost daily yet you pay your money to support them every time they are on a field? Truth be told, if we went through all of the sports organizations today we could probably find buckets of simple infractions and heinous acts that are lying dormant because the public has no idea what happened. Suppose it was discovered that there are several teams with players who dogfight, sell drugs, molest children, abuse their wives, killed innocent people, were repeat DUI offenders, would you protest them and call them hateful names? Or are you okay with them continuing to play the sport they love and we continue to buy tickets to see them.
We spend countless dollars on the latest sneaker and sports memorabilia yet we don’t hold them accountable. If we did we would all be at the local arenas every week protesting. That certainly wouldn’t make much fun now would it? I am in no way trying to pass judgment on anyone here. All I am asking is that you think before you speak and be careful what you say. You just might be judging yourself someday.

Can any of you Vick haters or folks like Mark Bradley who thinks he owes us yet another apology; tell me of anyone involved in the Iditarod dog racing who has ever served time in federal prison? No, I didn’t you could.

And before you begin all this nonesense about the Iditarod being legal I think you should bother to do a little research about what happens to the dogs that run in this race. After taking the time to do that then please come back and tell me why in the name of the 10th Amendment (the one that deals with equal protection under the law) should Michael Vick spend 23 months of his life in a federal prison and those involved in this “dog sport” go on with their lives and careers as if its no big deal. It is a fact that dogs die during the course of this race (same as dogfighting). As a matter of fact 6 died this year, 2 as a result of their owner (an Alaskan doctor) continuing to race the dogs through a blizzard and icy waters. Outside of the race season, many dogs owners keep their dogs on tethers and chains (same as dogfighting) because they have so many. Dogs who are determined to be unable to run fast or pull the owner’s sled are routinely killed by their owners (same as dogfighting). One Alaskan owner who had underperforming puppies — bashed his puppies in the head with the blunt of an ax and threw their remains in an icy river.

I am not arguing for or against the Iditarod; frankly I could care less what the folks who live in Alaska do; its the right of the citizens of that state to have or not have this yearly race.

But I do believe in fairness and if two individuals are committing acts of the same or similar transgressions then they ought to be held equally responsible. One person should not be held to public ridicule while the other individual is allowed to live wihthout any recriminations.

So for those of you who love to get on your high horse about Vick did this, Vick did that, he’s a thug, he’s scum, he needs to suffer the same fate as those animals; please give me a freakin break. YOU are a hypocrite and this country is filled with hypocrisy. Folks we have long let the horse out of the barn centuries ago and have always sacrificed the lives of animals, unborn babies, the sick, the elderly and yes humans of a certain race for the convenience and/or pleasure of the living. And we will continue to do it in the future — so please put your manufactured anger back in your pocket.

Michael Vick is not the sympton or source of the issues in this country and he should only apologize when the US Congress passes a law which abolishes interstate commerce for the Iditarod race, greyhound racing, and horse racing. And he should take his place in line behind other owners who have culled their underperforming animals.

You know “midnite” you could really benefit from some unnarrowminding.

For the record, most people who support Mike Vick have no hatred for Arthur Blank, the Falcons or Matt Ryan, but it’s obvious what you are trying to imply. Arthur Blank is a WONDERFUL man, we are smart enough to know that he took a personal interest in Mike Vick and wanted him to be successful, he only had to protect his BUSINESS interest. The Atlanta Falcons had a great season, and the Mike Vick supporters in the stands cheered just a loudly for Matt Ryan – as he demonstrated that he was a special talent. They also continue to support the Falcons in spirit and monetarily through ticket purchases even though Vick is no longer with the team. Just because someone continues to wear a “7″ jersey at the game doesn’t mean they hate the team or the owner. Maybe they are just nostalgic about the most exciting player to ever don an Atlanta Falcon uniform? I hope I have helped you see past your own predjudices, my guess is though I haven’t and can’t. Give people more credit than you have.

I have read all these comments with a great deal of interest. I see two groups, one with an easy all forgiving attitude and another with a locked in sense of condemnation. Nothing is needed to continue the loving feelings of the first and nothing can salve the second.

Hmmm, where do I stand? I see Michael Vick as a pathological liar and a very bad human being, a man who will run roughshod over anyone who gets in his way, teammates or friends alike. I see very little to justify him ever again playing football in the NFL.

For those who try to compare him with the player who killed someone while driving drunk. That man didn’t set out that night intending to kill someone with his car. Vick INTENDED to do what he did.

On the other hand he has paid the price our court system designated. It is now time to move on. But to where? I would like to see Vick make something of his life outside football. Let him learn humility, let him learn human decency, let him learn that life exacts a price from all of us for our meanness and bad decisions and that he is no different. Michael Vick didn’t make “mistakes,” Michael Vick made “decisions.” And most of them were very bad decisions. He is the last person I would want living next door and that is how I ultimately judge people. I could never trust him as a next door neighbor. Could you?

Very well written. However, there is one point that I have to disagree with…”His failure loosed a deluge of racial back-and-forth that missed the point, for this was never about a demographic profile…”

Unfortunately, this has ALWAYS been about a demographic profile. There is a reason Pres Clinton enjoyed almost unanimous support from the black community during his impeachment. There is also a reason Michael Vick continues to enjoy almost unanimous support in the black community. And that reason (unfortunately), has everything to do with race.

Racism runs very deep in America; and most black people know how it feels to be judged and prejudged by “well-meaning” white folk. As Jeff Schultz has repeatedly shown, “white hypocrisy” [judges, politicians, reporters, sports columnists, etc who are outraged over the misdeeds of "those people" but tend to overlook/diminish the misdeeds of people "like them" -- all while hiding behind their supposed moral standards] is very prevalent even in the most “color-blind” situations.

Peter King (SI) noted that there are wife beaters, steroid users, drug sellers, compulsive gamblers, alcoholics, etc. who have been caught, convicted (but served less jail time than Vick), and allowed to continue to play the game.

Unfortunately, the problem with people like Jeff Schultz and others, who claim moral outrage, is that they never understood that Michael Vick HAS ALWAYS been more worthy of forgiveness than that wife beater, steroid user, etc.

That lack of understanding has always been about race (”those people”, “thugs”, etc). And that is the point that was missed during the entire Michael Vick saga. How many times did Newt Gingrich condemn Clinton for having an affair while on his way to see his mistress? And I wonder how many skeletons lie in the closet of PETA members who say Michael Vick should suffer the same fate as his dogs. I wonder how many of them have ever killed a spider (which is considered a pet to some people)?

So to answer your question, Michael Vick does not need to apologize to anyone. He has paid a very steep price for being one of “those people”.

P.S. Please forward this to Jeff Shultz…

Bullfighting, Deer Hunting, or any other hunting for that matter. Cock fighting, and even Frisbee throwing and catching can harm animals. We Americans are a pias bunch, sadly. Simply Amazing. One of the writers talked about God, and I’m with them. God will be the judge, not me. But some will, so they can elevate themselves and feel better about what ever it that they are being “Stelth” about. Still Amazing. Vick got cocky, and even arrogant, but what do you expect from a guy that is that gifted, and is thrown millions. I’m afraid I’d sucomb to that virus also. The truth is, he took care of his homeys, and they threw him under the bus. He may have lied, but he’s not the first one who has lied. Our lowmakers have the trophy for that. And they re the ones who say what he did was wrong. And then there’s PETA. Last time I went hunting, I didn’t see any protests. I would not be surprised to see a spouse of someone in that bunch go fishing, or deer hunting. Simply Amazing. And Shameful. Feel good about yourselves folks. You got your man. Does anyone know what kind of punishment Vick would have gotten in, say Italy, or over seas?

First off Mike Vick doesn’t owe any of us an apology. He didn’t hurt your life one way or the other. Mike has apologized to his fans and paid one heck of a price for a biscuit eaten dog. As a long time Falcons fan, I wish you the best of luck, Mike. I think I speak for a lot of people when I say you were once every Atlantan’s favorite player — you were certainly mine. I can’t say you’re my favorite player anymore — I’m a dog lover, and what you did was truly disgusting. But I hope that what you’ve been through has changed you, and you’ll become a better man for it.

Best of luck wherever you land in the NFL. I hope it isn’t too long that this whole ordeal is forgotten, and when your name is coming up in the headlines again it’s because you had another 60 yard overtime run to clinch the game… or because you whipped a pass at 80 mph through defenders right into the hands of your receiver.

I hope all this is forgotten. I don’t think it will be, but I believe that in time all things heal. There are people who will nevr drop this — those true to you and themselves will realize you’ve paid a price that no other individual has paid in the past for a similar crime. Best of luck with everything, Mike… stay away from stupid people and keep your mind focused on what’s good in life: God, family, and friends, in that order. I hope to see you playing again soon… better yet, I hope to see you winning in the game and winning in life.

FYI:

If someone out there is a “HATER” of you, it is very likely because you have (repeatedly) conducted yourself is a selfish, egotistical, self-serving, care-only-for-yourself manner that adversely affects others.

Being “Hated” in this world has NOTHING to do with how you were born or anything about yourself that cannot be changed.

How dare any single one of us demand to be Respected when we choose to demonstrate little or no respect anyone else! What respect has Mr. Vick shown up to this point to the rest of society?

It is intellectually lazy to simply dismiss someone who notices you are being a jerk as being a “Hater.” More often than not, you are EARNING every bit of that “Hate” by mistreating or selfishly annoying others.

Football issues aside, people who genuinely “Hate” Mike Vick do so because of how he elected to behave and how he chose to disregard the same laws by which the rest of us abide.

Whether Vick continues to have “Haters” at this turning point in his life is entirely up to him.

THE BEAR Illegitimi non carborundum you stated that a person who illegally drinks and drives and as a result kills someone did not go out with the intent of killing that person. And to that sir, I say BULL. Anyone with an ounce of a brain knows the dangers of drinking and driving. The government, non-profit agencies, as well as the makers of adult beverages continue to remind us that drinking and driving is STUPID.

For a person who engages in such behavior to then say “well I didn’t intend to kill nobody” is pure lunacy. Yeah, someone who fires a bullet in a crowded room and kills somone can obably say the same thing, “I didn’t mean to kill nobody I was just trying to get everybody’s attention”. Both knew beforehand that the results of their actions could result in the death of another person, so I have NO sympathy for idiotic drunk drivers. Besides like the Mike Vick you so adamantly cannot forgive, many of these drunk drivers have been engaged in their destructive behavior long before they get caught.

Maybe you Vick haters would come across as a bit more reasonable if you would stop trying to rationalize away other actions. If we talk about hunters — they are killing for meat and its not a sport. If we bring up Greyhound or Iditarod racing — those are legal. If we talk about other athletes who have beat their wives or girlfriends — well that’s in the past and its not as serious. If we talk about athletes who drink, drive, and kill — oh they didn’t intend to hurt nobody. Bring up Kobe or Mike Tyson — the girls were asking for it. Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.

I would never watch a game featuring MV7. What he did to those dogs makes me sick. It wasn’t just the fact he drowned and electrocuted his own dogs. If that wasn’t bad enough, I’ve read claims that his co-horts kidnapped dogs out of neighborhood yards and would cripple them, lacerate them, and finally feed them to his pit bulls to give them the taste of blood. Only someone with a hidden, “inner monster” would participate or condone such as heartless act. I think any team that involves themselves in MVick is scraping the bottom of the barrel. This man has a hole in his psyche that makes him unsuitablefor the league referring to the NFL ethics rules to play in the league. He never apologized. Sack him. For good. Period.

Now that Michael Vick has been convicted and sent to prison for running an illegal interstate gambling operation that violates federal law and brutally torturing living creatures for pleasure in the process.

[Asking Rhetorically, Expecting Deafening Silence] In light of the new awareness of this brutal torture of animals for illegal gambling purposes, do any of you Vick Supporters here with us in the audience today think that dog fighting should now be made legal?

I happen to think dog fighting is reprehensible and I own several pit bulls who are lucky to live with me and not someone who would use them for bad purposes. I cannot imagine the mindset that would lead someone to do what Michael Vick did.

That said, Michael Vick has paid his debt to society. He deserves another chance to excel in his chosen field and in life.

The one thing that upsets so many people about tis entire ordeal, is the way some people get upset over dogs but don’t seem to car about human lives. It’s bigger than Michael Vick. Many of us are called Vick supporters, but we are only supporting Vick because we see the injustice that was done to him. It is no right to make an example out of anyone. The man was unfairly given a 2 year sentence because he is MV7 if it was me or Joe Smoe, he would have never went to prison. Dogfighting was a misdemeanor, they trumped up the felonies. The City of Baltimore and its owner Art Modell, stood behind Ray Lewis during his ordeal. The media in Atlanta and most fans stood behind danny Heatley, what he did wwas vehicular homicide and he should have went to prison for much longer than Vick. But, most of the media and some of the so called fans along with Arthur Blank, threw Mike Vick under the bus. That first press conference Blank gave , Blank did throw him under the bus. I will never cheer for the Falcons while Blank owns this team. he could have handled the situation much better. But, Blank just like many others will cave in under the pressure of PETA. Damn!, what mojo and power is PETA spinning. You can tell how many in the media speak on the situation, they are trying their best to be politically correct, but will throw a racial joke out there in a heart beat and think it is acceptable. I can’t stand roger Godell, a good commissioners do not stay on camera as much as this man do. David Stern lead the NBA through what should have been one of the greatest scandals in sports history with that gambling ref and the NBA came out of it almost unscathed because David Stern knows how to sell his league and stay in the background and let the stars shine. Roger Godell acts like an overseer, and some of you seem happy to see him put those wealthy black men in check. Vick apologize, no, hopefully he has repented like most of us need to.

But anyway the Falcons still suck, 4-12 for 2009.

Wow, perhaps you should have slept in this morning, earlyday. It is you who seems narrow minded. I did not say that ALL Vick supporters did anything. To reiterate my earlier comments to the haters, I said, “Your love of Mike Vick should not equate to your hatred for Arthur Blank, Matt Ryan, and the Falcons. they were not responsible for his downfall… You people that call everyone “haters” are in fact the real haters.”

I am confused as to why you telling me about the jerseys worn for nostalgia or whatever you whined about, but I stand by my statement that Mike Vick is responsible for his actions and I truly wish him well. Dude beat like 6 teams with winning records his whole career. He’s the Baseball version of Dale Murphy in Atlanta. Fun to watch/great player/ get excited about but never really won anything worth noting in the grand scheme of the NFL. He along with about 75-90 other QB’s played in an NFC Title game.

Wish him the best, thanks for the good games and hope he gets his stuff straight.

All this over possibly the most over-rated and over-hyped and underperformig QB in the NFL. Is this somewhat about race? You bet it is. Blacks take up for and staunchly defend Vick becuase he is one of their own. This mentality spills over to other areas as well. I have been on multiple jury trials in Atlanta and I saw the same thing. You have to almost have a courtroom confession of a black admitting guilt before you can get other blacks to convict a black. Case in point was Brian Nichols. Do you think it was whites who wanted him not to ride the needle. You can bet your life the Silver Comet Trial killer will get the death penalty from a white jury. Whites hold our own accountable for their actions and personal responsibilities. The bottom line is that people have a right to support Vick if he plays professional football again and people have a right to not support him. I love football as much as anyone but I wouldn’t walk across the street to watch him play but that’s just my personal choice. I was never impressed with him from the start. Atlanta wanted a QB from the streets and they got them one. I want my kids to look to the Mannings of the league as a role model, not someone like Vick.

This is a really good article Mark. You obviously put some thought into your words. Thank you.

Vick gets a second chance…a chance to rebuild his life. I am optimistic that almost 2 years in Leavenworth will have made him consider his mistakes and that he will be rehabilitiated. I am pulling for him. Hopefully, he will get another chance to play in the NFL.

Yes, he should apologize again. He should give the world an emphatic apology and show true heart-felt remorse for his crimes. While yes, he half-heartedly “apologized” before, this one needs to be real, show real emotion…show that he cares. He should be humble before the world. No more arrogance or disdain for others, no more “Everyone Likes Mike Vick” egotism. Just a humble person who made a mistake, paid for it, realizes the errors of his ways, and proves he deserves another shot.

This is not about Vick being further humiliated. He has done that to himself already. This is about speaking from the heart and showing he has “awakened”. That losing everything has reached his inner depths of his soul and his physce and touched him in a way that caused him to take stock of his life and want to move forward as someone who will live to help others and help himself.

True that, dogfighting is not murder. I have a dog, and love her like she was a child. True, she is not. But she is a memeber of the family and brings us much joy and happiness. But dogfighting is illegal for a reason. Dogs have intrinsic good nature; they are generally happy beings who would do harm to no one. As carnivores, we eat meat. We kill deer, cows, fish without a second thought. But these are not animals bred as pets. I’m not fond of the pit bull breed and am sick of stories of little babies getting mauled. I can see the paradox between sport and pets. The morals of our society have declared that pets are people too and we have laws to protect them.

When laws that protect our beloved pets are broken, you will always hear the collective outrage of the millions of people in this country who own pets. People who belittle those who hold up their pets as family and decry “they are only dogs” might be the same people who have little compassion for other life on the planet.

But, Vick is a human being. Human beings deserve second chances. If he comes out and apologizes, shows that he is a caring, compassionate human being, shows that he is a changed man, then he should get another shot. As a society, we are forgiving, for the right reasons.

I wish him the best.

I believe his previous actions were both hideous and immature however he has paid a huge price for them and will continue to pay a price for the rest of his life due to high profile and career choice and he should be given the same rights any one who has been caught in a crime and convicted is given

He deserves a second chance to prove he has learned from these sad events and possibly he can become the role model he wasn’t.

This topic transcends my capability to comprhend. The points that need to be made have been made 10,000 times. What Mike did was wrong. Now he has paid his debt. He deserves a chance to rebuild his life. He was a good QB not an elite QB. He made pro bowls because despite his limitations as a QB he was one of the most electrifying players ever to play the game. Now we shall see.

I agree with and have stated all these. What I cannot understand is the level of passion on the outside extremes of this issue. The only thing I can come up with is that it is an Atlanta thing. Detroit dont know squat about being a doormat. As Atlanta sports fans we feel kicked around as much as any city. We come close every decade or so but we never win the championship. The Braves one once and teased us lots more times. So we finally get what we think is an Elite Superstar and he pushes all our faces in the mud. Not passing judgement. That is just what happend. He was a young man with too much money and too much attention and yes it would have gotten me into trouble as well. Perhaps not this type of trouble but some type.

Apologies to whomever are irrelevant for Mike Vick. All that truly matters is whether or not there is contrition in his heart. None of us will know that for a time. Only he knows now. If there is all the rest will happen as it should. If there is not then calling a press conference and saying the words will not matter. His life will take a bad turn again.

I sure want to believe that there is contrition and that he will rebuild his life. A Pheonix from the ashes as it were. I sure wish the vitriol on the outer extremes would stop….but it wont…..clearly it wont.

Well BEAR, nice attempt to present yourself as an impartial and understanding individual, but you failed in your very next sentence. Let’s challenge your sentiments and see if you hold up.

So he is a PATHOLOGICAL liar. What specific proof do you have of that. The fact that he said he wasn’t involved at first? I guess Clinton’s a pathologicall liar then. Now Susan Smith..THAT’S pathological liar. Casey Anthony, another one…Don’t miss the point though.

I’m amazed at how you did exactly as MrKnowGood stated..attempt to minimalize Heatly’s actions. So let me get this straight, the fact that he INTENDED to get behind the wheel of his vehicle to drive (when he knew that to be illegal), coupled with the fact that the had to understand that being DRUNK he might injure or kill himself or someone else. Oh my bad, just judgment was “impaired” we’ll give him a pass on that.

“Run roughshod over anyone who gets in his way”..well that’s a GOOD thing isn’t it (on the football field), right? And man he did that well dontcha’ think? Because I have never known there to ever be any published reports of Vick strongarming people or shaking them down, or beating anyone up…Where exactly did you get that logic from?

And finally like so many you jump on your self righteous highhorse, stating what YOU deem to be acceptable for Mike Vick. Oh, you want him to learn “humility” and all that jazz. Just don’t give him all that money and fame again, wouldn’t want him to become too uppity – driving Bentley’s and having them big custom homes and “bling” and such. Keep him in his place, head down and meager. And oh by the way, don’t want him living next to me, my life is too perfect and I shall not intertwine with the unwashed and unworthy. Ha!

Your kids probably curse you out in public. And quite honestly YOU are the type of person I wouldn’t trust as my next door neighbor. You at least appear to be a two-faced individual, seriously.

In his prime, Vick was a blown-out knee away from being a janitor. Now, that might be the only viable employment option for him. If anyone thinks he is “sorry” and “will show remorse”, think again. He had 23 months to do that – and position it properly – through his attorney. He’ll climb on Tony Dungy’s back and eventually say whatever Goddall wants to hear because he knows some NFL front-office bozo will convince an equally clueless owner to take a chance on Vick. Thank God he is out of Atlanta!

Very good piece. Well Written. As we all disagree with the nature of the crime he’s done his time and has done enough to pay for what he did. I say now is the time we leave the past behind and look into the positive side of things. He can now be an advocate for the Humane Society and teach kids how to make better decisions. If the NFL lifts his suspension and he’s signed to a team it will remind us that we All have been given a second chance in some fashion or another rather you got caught or not (even the most simple things) and we can prevail! I wish Michael Vick the best and I thank God for second chances!

Well Great Moments in ATL sports I a vick supporter would be more than happy to answer your question:

[Asking Rhetorically, Expecting Deafening Silence] In light of the new awareness of this brutal torture of animals for illegal gambling purposes, do any of you Vick Supporters here with us in the audience today think that dog fighting should now be made legal?

First of all the federal law that Vick pleaded guilty of does not outlaw dogfighting in any state. It simply punishes American citizens who cross state lines to participate in dogfighting whether dogfighting is legal or illegal in that particular state. And in my mind that LAW is unconstitutional as it is none of the federal goverment’s business what activities free citizens elect to do as long as it is legal in that state. This law is as asinine as telling a hunter in GA he cannot go to NC to hunt or a same sex couple in GA that they cannot leave the state of GA to go marry/reside in Massachusetts (where is legal).

I have no problem with dogfighting being illegal in any of the 50 states as it now is. But if a future generation of any state decides via the ballot box or its state leglislative process that they want this in their state — then so be it. I could care less — the same way it is no concern of mine that the state of MA has decided to allow gays to marry. Like the founding fathers I believe in a limited federal government and that the individual states have a right to govern themselves as they see fit. If the people in this nation want a law which really outlaws dog fighting for all 50 states (like slavery) then pass an amendment to the Constitution, but, the current law does no such thing.

Mike Vick’s dogfighting was a matter for the state of VA and the other states he conducted this activity wtthin. If the district attorney in that state decided he did not have enough evidence or elected not to bring charges against Vick then that should have ended the matter.

No way should this man have been brought up on federal charges because Congress continues to overstep the boundaries of the Constitution and pass a bunch of idiotic laws using the Interstate Commerce clause as a weapon to restrict the rights and freedoms of the American people.

Hope that answers your question.

Give me an F’ing BREAK. I mean really? How long are we going to parade this issue about as if Mr. Vick made an attempt on Mr. Blank’s life?

Did Michael make a poor choice? Sure, but really, you know, we’ve had football players accussed of murder with pretty compelling evidence that they were involved & yet we all forget about that because they’re “tight-ends” are back on the field.

For starters, i’m an animal lover- i live with 2 very expensive well-bread dogs, but frankly I don’t really feel this issue deserves all the drama that it’s getting.

I’m not particularly fond of the Falcons, but I’m definitely an Arthur Blank fan- he’s done great things for the City of Atlanta and he provides stellar leadership in the business community for the Metro Atlanta Region.

At this point i’m going to say what most likely many people are thinking- Vick has paid his debt to society, let’s move on already!

I for one am looking forward to Vick being back on the football field.

Mark, Vick the player was failing. Flipping off the fans, blaming players and coaches for his short comings were signs of the pending flameout.

Vick the human being deserves the opportunity to become a productive member of society. The NFL is not a requirement of his need to do this.

You got your point across, Mark. Especially the part about Michael being the reason we fell in love with football again in Atlanta. I moved here from Chicago 6 years ago and when I saw him, I became his biggest fan on the planet (as far as I was concerned, anyway). When his downfall commenced, I, too, was devastated. I wanted to stop watching football completely. Once I picked myself up from that, I no longer became a Falcons fan, but simply a football fan. It’s like I was rebelling; I was so upset that I actually rooted against the Falcons. That’s unreasonable, I know. But in any event, I wish the Falcons well regardless, but I’m a Michael Vick fan, and I’m looking forward to him getting back at it and redeeming himself. So, no offense to the awesome ATL, but I will always be rooting for Michael. Because he’s the reason I became the football fan that I did in the first place. I, too, believe he has a good heart and will come out of this ok. I’m looking forward to another great story from you as the rise continues. I think it’s high time the NFL held each and every player accountable and stop letting a lot of guys get by with felony crimes and still continue palying foorball. If I commit a felony I would lose my job in corporate America. Anyone making the millions these guys make should be held to a very high level and if commit a felony, sorry but you’re out. Let them work like the average Joe and make a much more ‘normal’ salary and they’ll see the light. If you have the potential to make millions, you better be able to walk the line and keep your nose clean. This goes for anyone who signs an NFL contract.

MV has been punished for his crime, but he has not paid his debt to society. His debt requires life-long repayment. He deserves the opportunity to make remuneration, and to change his life and pursue success. I cringe when I hear a murderer who is finally released from prison state that he has payed his debt. You never can repay a debt incurred from taking someone else’s life. Such a person is simply fortunate that he did not have to give his life in exchange.

Mark Bradley, who else OWES you an apology? Or the public for that matter….who? No one serving time or who has served time owes you, me or anybody else some public “sign of remorse” or whatever other bs you patronizing paternalistic pundits believe you are entitled too. Now perhaps the reality is setting in that he’s gonna come back to the Dome with a new team and the standing room only crowd wearing all those Falcons #7 jerseys gonna cheer him and that team to what will be an epic win. During that press conference, after that game….then he probably will owe you and some others an apology….not really because he OWES it…but because its just the courteous thing to do.

Whatever happened to serving the sentence for your crime and moving on? The intent of our judicial system is to punish and release.

Does anyone here believe in putting a child in time out and then holding it against him the rest of their lives?

He was punished. He should be on equal footing unless/until he does it again.

I for one would put his butt back on the field vs throwing away all the money invested in him. Let him return kickoffs and punts or throw to him out of the backfield. If he screws up, the league will certainly deal with him first.

It’s not just the dogfighting that will determine his reinstatement by the NFL but the fact that he was runing a Gambling Ring attached to the dog fighting. Gambling is a big no no to the NFL, running an illegal gambling ring is kiss of death type stuff. I think that is of bigger concern to Goddell than the dogfighting even though the dog fighting is the lightening rod issue.

although Vick was not a typical QB what he didon the field was put his team in a position to win most weeks. His last season in the NFL he produced 1039 yards, 2472 passing yards and 22 touchdowns (combined) along with 13 INTs….you can break those numbers down however you’d like but the fact is that year (2006) he produced more yards than E. Manning, Tony Romo, Jake Delhomme, Phillip Rivers, Chad Pennington, and Donavan Mcnabb and producing more TDs that all of those players with the exception of Eli Manning….Vick also had fewer pass attempts than all these QBs but one (Romo) and was sacked 45 times, the next closest in this bunch was Pennington with 30 sacks. Vick was a servicable NFL QB the nunmbers don’t lie and if he can still be (who knows) then he should be playing, he who casts the first stone….If guys like Ray “the knife” Lewis, Jamal Lewis, Mark Chmura, Nate Newton, and Adam “PacMan” Jones can get a 2nd or 3rd chance then why can’t Vick? And whatever happened to Marvin Harrison and his custom made gun that shot someone? Give Vick a break he did his time and if he earns an NFL roster spot let him play….. Nuff said put it to rest fellas

But I agree that they guy’s done his time, and served his sentence, and should be judged by the NFL and by law on what he does from here on out.

I am a realistic fan, and I think that the Tide is closer to winning the national championship than the Bulldogs and that is because of COACHING. Plus, can’t argue with you too much after the whipping you all put on us. The Gators took that whipping from us a couple off years ago and learned from it and then last year, well you know what happened. So lets see if Richt can have the Bulldogs ready this year or he and/or those sorry coordinators will have to go.

This man has been to prison, lost MILLIONS, had everyone except family turn their back on him, and he still has to get out of prison and deal with all this shyt. In the black community we love our pets true enough, but they are not and never will be human nor will we ever value their life more than that of a human. Vick’s life has been turned upside down for fighting dogs(something that we have grown up to think was normal, I know there are those people that dont agree, but each culture has things they do that others dont and fighting dogs is one of those things that we grew up around). Mike has taken responsibilty for his actions, lost darn near everything he had(including millions of dollars), he has apologized(everyone’s emotions are different, who are we to say that this man’s apology wasn’t sincere). Let him move on with his life and play football again, there are other players that have done worse things than fight a dog and they are still playing. There needs to be some type of strict guidelines to follow when it comes to dealing with issues like this with a player and not just whatever the commissioner’s personal feelings are on the matter. As for PETA, they need to go sit down somewhere and shut up, they wanted the man to pay for what he did to his own dogs and that should be enough, I feel that he had more than paid for his actions. All of this because someone fought there own dogs, what about the horses with the Kentucky Derby? What about the bulls with the rodeo? What about the chickens we eat everyday? What about the swine? What about the cows? If they want to continue to punish this man for fighting his own dogs then they need to go after EVERYONE for raising and killing all these other animals that we eat everyday.

Good article Mark, except I sort of, in principle, disagree with one statement:

That “Michael Vick needs to talk to us, and soon. He needs to tell us he’s sorry and that his time behind bars has changed him, made him wiser, redoubled his determination not to mess up the rest of his life. He needs now to throw himself on the mercy of the American public and see how merciful it can be”.

There is only a couple segments that think this. Although I am not an animal lover, there is a large portion of the country and world that do not have the values of PETA and the rest of the Dog lovers. If they were absolutely true to this, they would work tirelessly to stop, for example, the horse and dog racing sport, where bets are placed. I am not condoning what Mike admitted to, but plain and simple, there are alot who do not see animals the same as being like human. I would certainly feed a homeless person and let a dog starve, if I had to save one of the two. That do nut make me or anyone else who would make the same decision less of a humann or a bad person, or a dog hater. What he admitted and plead guilty was against the law, but some, perhaps a lot see it as a law that simply lacks the foundation that speaks to ‘All of us’. Mike has to do what he has to do in order to re-enter into any area other than his family life. His family already accespts him and rightfully so. Will it be sincere, I hope so.

But Mike Vick simply to not have to win ‘all of us’ over. A lot of ‘us’ can care less about the pressure of PETA and we are smart to do so.

Great article though.

Hey Jamal,

Some would argue that slavery was just a cultural thing as well. Folks just grew up thinking it was normal. I’m certainly not condoning it but just pointing out how silly that is as an excuse for what normal society deems dispecable behavior. And since Vick has apologized for said behavior he has acknowledged it was wrong so let’s just drop the lame excuses. Also the reason most people do not think his first apology was sincere was because of his actions following it. Getting caught smoking pot, imbezling money from funds he was not to touch, buying a 6 figure car right before he goes to prision, etc. etc. You are right we can not gauge his true emotions or thoughts but we can examine his actions and come to our own conclusions. Words are just wrods after all and when coming from a known liar can not be taken at face value. My guess is that it is these actions after his first apology that are making MB and NFL want another one and for his actions going forward to show true remorse. I would not look for him to get reinstated this year as it will take time for him to prove to the NFL that he is indeed a changed man as just saying so will not cut it anymore. Weither he gets reinstated or not I wish him luck as he has a helluva good oppurtunity to make something good and special out of this whole ordeal.

Vick has shown he’s incapable of living a decent life because he’s a dirtbag. He did what he wanted, when he wanted, regardless of the consequences to himself or anyone else. Coming up with “creative” ways to kill animals, or enjoying their suffering is a symptom of a sick, sick mind. He’s a liar, through and through. And if you think it’s all about a couple of pit bulls, think again. Dogfighting is a nasty business for people. Law enforcement knew long ago he was involved. A man was murdered as a result of gambling at one of his dogfights. I guess all you Vick lovers don’t care about human beings if they can’t provide you with cheap entertainment running a football.

Anyway, this is a non-issue. Even if people cover for Vick long enough for him to get back on the football field, he’s only one hit away from a career-ending injury. There’s a good reason most quarterbacks rely mainly on their brains and arms and not their feet.

So I am reading this article and all of the responses and I am just curious. If you were in a situation where you had made a dire mistake over a course of time and got caught, would you want to be banished from doing the thing that you had been groomed to do your whole life? If you were a doctor, would you want one mistake to end your career forever? Especially if you didn’t know that mistake would be your end?

As for me and my opinion of Mr. Vick. I believe that he knew what he was doing throughout the process. Yes I do. But I also believe that he has served his sentence(which I have seen people commit murder and get less time). But for so many he will never be vindicated. He is a new millenium O.J. Simpson. His crimes will ever be before him even though unlike O.J. He actually did his time.

It is so unfortunate that people don’t really believe the religion that they claim to be. The Bible says that Jesus said we should forgive 70 times 7. But you PEOPLE can’t even forgive one time. Not even once. If you looked at all of the things that you have done to others that were disturbing I am sure that you would find that you are no better than Vick. And he did these things to animals.

It is man’s inhumanity to man that is the most sickening. Because it always identifies the fact that we could really care less about each other.

I wish Vick the best. I believe that he should be reinstated and let the owners figure out if they want him. But he should at least be afforded the opportunity to play. If Vick can’t cut it. Guess what, he is out of luck. But to deny him the opportunity is down right UNAMERICAN!

“Founded in 1980, PETA is dedicated to establishing and defending the rights of all animals. PETA operates under the simple principle that animals are not ours to eat, wear, experiment on, or use for entertainment.”

What is “rational” about any of this crap? I guess this would make Veggie-Tales cartoons for kids kind of sacreligous to PETA types.

Where are teh protest in fornt of McDonalds, Burger King, Chik-Fil-A, Dennys?? PETA doesnt protest in fron tof these places because it would make them look like the disaffected nut-cases that they are. Where’s the protest at the Derby, the Preakness, the Belmont, at dog tracks, at the Westminster Dog Show? Wheres the protest at Macys, Nordstroms, and Bloomingdales over the sale of leather shoes, gloves, sofas, belts, etc.

Michael Vick the former superstar quarterback for the Atlanta Falcons convicted of participating in a dog fighting ring was released from prison today. When the media discovered Vick’s participation in a dog fighting ring each and every media outlet was outraged that someone would participate in such cruelty to animals. For years the media has known about cock fighting rings in which two banner roosters are pitted against each other to fight to the death. The owners of these banner roosters sharpen their claws and beaks for maximum damage. My question to the media is this, are dogs more valuable animals than banner roosters to the human race, or is there something else more sinister? I think it’s fair to say more Blacks and people of color participate in dog fighting rings than Whites. I also think it’s fair to say more Whites participate in cock fighting rings than Blacks. I understand the media coverage of Michael Vick’s participation in a dog fighting ring; it was definitely because of his status as an NFL superstar, I got that part. But, why was the media so outraged about dogs fighting to the death, and completely silent about banner roosters fighting to the death? I won’t be holding my breath for a reply from the supposedly educated members of the media. As far as I’m concerned, the answer is as clear as BLACK and WHITE.

While I don’t necessarily feel bad for Vick;this whole situation is a sad, sorry one. Vick didn’t realize/care(as most criminals don’t)that his actions not only affected him but EVERYONE around him as well and also him feeling like he’s above the law. This case embarrassed his mother, Arthur Blank, The NFL, Falcons fans as well as the city of Atlanta. When you make the kind of money he was making as well being the face of an NFL franchise, you HAVE to know that Roger Goddell’s black helicopters are watching that much closer. I hope after having all that time to inventory his life while in prison he will come out a better/smarter man even if he never plays another down in the NFL again.
130 million dollars cannot buy maturity & leadership. Due to the lack of those particular characteristics is what landed him prison in the first place. Again, sad & sorry situation for everyone involved.

Hey guys I have been reading comments for almost every story about the falcons and no matter what it is about, there always seems to be comments of people supporting Mike Vick, many calling anyone that disagrees with them as “haters”. I for one loved watching Vick play, but he just has great character flaws that I feel many people blindly defend. He made mistakes and paid for them, but the fact that many of the people on this blog defend Mike just because of his skin color is disturbing

To quote Dr. King: “Judge a person for the CONTENT OF HIS CHARACTER and not the color of his skin”
This sentiment is a 2-way street folks. Character flaw is present in ALL races, so we need to look at this from an objective standpoint please. No more blind defending OR condeming of this man just because of what he looks like

I’m gonna be totally honest here…. When this whole thing went down, I was crushed. No matter what people say, white or black, Vick was Atlanta..Vick was the ENTIRE FRANCHISE. We all cheered him..with him naturally receiving more scrutiny from whites, unfortunately. I have hated the Falcons since then. Not Mr.Blank or the team itself caused this hate, but the fans themselves caused it. I understand fans being upset about his crime, but to bring all of the racial hatred that has plagued this city out in the open and for “certain fans” to say that Vick never did anything positive on the field for this team and say that he’s the worst qb ever really pissed me off. I got to thinking….these people really don’t look at the big picture and just look at completion %s and qb ratings instead of WINS. He has a winning record as a starter and I thought that counted for something…I guess winning only counts for Ryan, lol, not Vick, the man who put atlanta on the map for real. That’s why I hate the falcons…and many people feel the same way as I do. I’m not saying that Vick was the perfect qb, but he played hard for this city and it wasn’t appreciated by “certain fans” here. I do know one thing, Ryan will never win this city over. ATL will always be Vick’s city, and the Falcons will always be Vick’s team, even when he comes here with his new team. The city of Atlanta loves you, Mike Vick, and you’ll receive your 2nd chance. It will be a comeback like never before and Falcons section of the AJC will always be about The Great Mike Vick. Redemption Time is Here.

I sincerely hope that Michael Vick has decided to change his personal life situation. He has obviously never been held accountable for his actions because of this athletic abilities. Only he can totally change his habits, circle of acquaintances/friends and even his own family members that he associates with (starting with his brother Marcus). The IRS is already on his heels for over $1 Million in back taxes owed, so if he’s not careful he might be right back in prison. The IRS is no joke when they want to go after an individual for monies owed.

Mark, “a good heart” is not one that is “re-made”. This isn’t the Grinch cartoon. This guy did unspeakable things to another living creature. For “fun” I might add. I certainly hope he can do some good in this world but he will never make up for the bad he has already accomplished. Also, I hope to God that the NFL doesn’t allow this guy back in. There are too many kids out there that live life the right way and do things the right way that deserve his roster spot. It will be a sad day if he is re-instated to play. Pac-man Jones has made Goodell look stupid enough. Re-state Vick will make him look even dumber. Go ahead congratulate Vick for finishing prison and getting to his halfway mansion but do not glorify or worship this guys as some kind of hero because he did that. If an NFL team selects him for their roster they will never hear the end of it from a host of people. Those dogs that he destroyed will be barking at him the rest of his life in one way or another.

gdawginkalamazoo – You obviously don’t know anything about the NFL. It’s not about a God given right or a privilidge or about right or wrong. It’s about $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$. Each owner will first determine whether or not MV is still able to help his team, and if so how much. i.e. can he help them be a winning team? make the playoffs? win the superbowl?
Then they will weigh the economic advantages/disadvantages of acquring him. i.e. fan boycotts, PETA backlash, increased revenue from improved team, making the playoffs, sbowl, etc.
The final decision will be purely monetary like everything else in the NFL. If MV keeps his nose clean; right and wrong aren’t even in the picture.

Now he is another felon who should be working minimum wage jobs to get by. He had the world and threw it away. Why should he deserve to get his life back? If you think he does deserve to play in the NFL answer me this, when Bernie Madoff gets released from prison would you hire him as your Investment Advisor? Would you let him handle your money. It’s all racist. A couple of weeks ago I saw a “60 Minutes” piece about a bullfighting family. It was all positive. Horse racing….dogracing…giant aquariums….circuses…etc. When the WHITE MAN abuses animals…it’s allright. When the Black man does it…..it’s the END OF THE WORLD.
OH….Vick broke the law and the white people that abused animals did it within the confines of the law….whatever. Animal abuse is animal abuse no matter what. Vick is being slammed primarily because he is BLACK….case closed.
They say he was convicted of “dogfighting”…. B.S!!! He fought pittbulls which were created by the WHITE MAN!!! Google pittbull kennels and you’ll get hundreds of white people who breed them…..and if yopu think these kennels breed them for “Pets” then you are a naive idiot.
Oh yeah….some of these kennels call them “Staffordshire Terriers” which are different than pittbulls…yeah right.
Bottomline…..Vick really did nothing wrong…..so he isn’t anthropomorphic and gives human characteristics to dogs like lots of loser Americans do.
Neither do the Amish and they are able to have puppy mills where they are able to commit far more heinous crimes to dogs than Vick ever did.
All you punk ass white boys that are still calling for Vick’s head are just jealous of the money he can and will make that will be more than you can ever fathom.

I think its really sad that we have so many judges in this world without the official paperwork. Some of you need to really look at your own lives and ask if you lived with integrity, honesty and respect. Ask how many people have forgiven you and if you really want people to question your character as a person. Lets all for a change grow up and be real with ourselves before condeming another. I wish the best for Vick and his family as their new day begins.

I really hope Vick will be reinstated as soon as possible and that a team signs him during the summer. Vick is a tremendous athlete that I love to watch play the game. I mean, how great would it be to see the falcons play against Vick this season? And for all the dog lovers out there: you can hate vick all you want, but he did serve a 2 year prison sentence, lose all of his money, and hit rock bottom. But why is it that Vick kills dogs and everyone turns on him, while Marshawn Lynch hit and killed a woman while drunk driving, and nobody seems to care? And the only punishment for Lynch is a 4 game suspension. Do we not care as much about the human race as we do for dogs? I dont understand.

I cannot believe what I am reading. I think a lot of these people care more about dogs than their own family….people get a grip…All this energy used on Vick…we can really use you in others ways that’s more meaningful than this dog thing…I have a dog…I love her true enough…but I would never put her before a human. I have saw several kids that will have to go through the rest of their life with scars from being malled by a pit bull. I know in 2 cases these were family pets that grew up with these kids…but one day they decided to turn and these kids have to suffer.
If people used this same energy to march right down to Chief Pennington office and see what we can do with this officer who shot this guy in the face…for no apparent reason.
If people used this same energy…maybe Aimee Micheals wouldn’t be out of jail….she caused 5 people to lose their lives….she’s not sorry neither is her family.
If people used this same energy….maybe we can get our school systems to do more about bullying…so not one more parent have to see their child hanging from something because they feared someone.
If people used this same energy…take this energy to Shirley Franklin to do something about this firefighter situation.
If people used this same energy…just maybe we can do something about all these bad a$% kids…with no regards for human life.
We need to revamp this negative energy about dogfighting and condeming this man. Because he has pay his debt to society…he has a family and has a right to support them…let this man earn a salary….
He do not owe us anything…if you don’t like him…don’t buy tickets to the games….don’t watch the games…you have a choice…but this continuous negativity is not healthy for anyone…
All of the people with unforgiving hearts…the hate….ask yourself…if your love one made a mistake would you want them to be forgiven?
If you answered no…you are heartless…and that’s personal…something you might want to work on.

truthfully, we may get an apology or we may not, but methinks it will be robotically read (once again) straight from the page, word-for-word, without any eye contact, and won’t exactly warm the hearts of all those who want him to succeed. It won’t be “real.”

Truth is, I just don’t think the man has a lot upstairs. He’s gonna allow himself to be manipulated and controlled by anyone hired to pull himself up and out of the fire. He’ll just be focused on getting those dollars rolling in again, and will say absolutely anything to facilitate that…

Nat, would you like to take a guess at which owner will pay Mike Vick for his services to his organization? Which city wants him to play for them? To be the face of their organization? Because he will become a face of that organization. And you know what? So will PETA protesters and every other animal rights organization out there and others who feel he hasn’t paid his debt. It is my opinion that he does not deserve the right to play in the NFL. But not a single NFL will be calling to ask me that question He was given that opportunity already and has shown that he cannot handle it responsibly. He has a right to work anywhere that will hire him, the NFL, MLB, NBA, PETCO, etc. That’s a given and easy to understand. BTW, I am not a PETA member or anything. Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy the naivete of the people in this country. Let me hook you folks on to one simple fact; Roger Goddell is not going to make a decision about Vick’s return to the NFL. Roger Goddell has already made a decision about Vick’s return to the NFL and he will allow him back in.

First of all, Mike Vick was not the only player in the NFL involved in dogfighting and Goddell knows it. This is not my opinion but something players in the NFL have stated themselves when this first happened. Jay Feeley former kicker with the Falcons said so on ESPN. Ronde Barber said the same thing to Peter King in an article that appeared in Sports Illustrated. SI also reported in that love feast article on the rehab of the dogs, that all the dogs on Vick’s property DID NOT belong to him and that his boys were doing some caretaking of dogs for other individuals.

In addition, if you go back and ACTUALLY READ some information on this case you would find out that in Tony Taylor’s statement of facts he describes a dogfight that occurred on Vick’s property that was between two dogs that did not belong to Vick, but, instead two other “unnamed individuals”. I seriously doubt if Vick is allowing any average Joe to bring their dogs to fight on his property. And if they were average Joes then why has the government failed to release the names of these individuals or indict them for the EXACT SAME CRIMES Vick admitted to doing.

All of this pie in the sky nonesense that Goddell is spewing out is nothing but political nonspeak. The man is a politician in the mold of his RINO dad. And even Bill Clinton cannot touch his innocent “who me” act. In one breath he talks about waiting until Vicks time is up and yet we found out he has discussed Vick with Tony Dungy. And I’m sorry I don’t believe that the national PRESIDENT of the Humane Society visited Vick in prison at Vick’s request as his NFLPA paid lawyer (Billy Martin) said on yesterday.

The race is on for the NFL to rehabilitate Vick’s image and put him back on the field so he can make them money. Afterall they know that if the people in this country will pay a buck for bottled water or elect a novice to the presidency then you can sell them anything.

Vick Supporter,

Do you work for the computer networking co. or the cooking oil maker? I was just curious. Anyway, you speak of racial hatred but that’s a 2 way street and I think you need to take a deep, long look in the mirror.

It seems that you and a lot of other black supporters seem to want to support Vick so passionately due simply to the fact that he is black. You keep bringing up this nonsense about him being “disrespected”. I am so sick of that over used “disrespected” term. Its the same term that people in the hood use to gun each other down. Someone “disrespected” someone so let’s go shoot them.

You think Vick was, is, and always will be the entire Falcons franchise. I got news for ya buddy. There is a new sheriff in town, his name is Matt Ryan, and he led the falcons from what was predicted to be a 1 win team by Bradley or some other AJC columnist to a playoff team. Forget Vick, he is the past. Get on board with Ryan and the new Falcons. Or will your own racial hatred blind you into not supporting Ryan? It sounds like it will unfortunately.

Personally, I forgive Vick and I think he has paid his debt to society. Let’s wish him well and let him move on with his life. I really do hope he does well. Unfortunately, I think he is a narcissistic man of very poor character. I don’t think it will be long before he manages to self destruct and ruin a 2nd chance all over again. I really think this is why people dislike him. I sense that most people know think that he hasn’t learned his lesson, that he is still just a bad person, and that its just a matter of time before he screws up again. That’s what I think will happen. I just really hope that I’m wrong.

This is a simple case of a celebrity doing something stupid and overpaying for it while being a made an example for everyone. From the judge to the arresting officers, to the media outlets. People make their careers off of moments like this. People wanting to jump in on history being made. “The downfall of Mr. Vick”. Nobody cares about the other shameless acts of NFL players drunkdriving and killing people in the process. Go protest that. Or beating their wives and drug usage. People send down judgement like they have that power. My friends boss hates Michael Vicks guts because of what he did. But the man goes around killing cats on his property with hammers. See the irony. He did his time, get off his back. What you dipsticks forget is that the NFL is a business!!! Meaning mulah, confetti, green, dollars, cha-ching!!! He was the best, most exciting player in the league, hate it or love it. The year he went down, the Falcons were scheduled for how many Monday Night Football games? Think about that!! Idiot Goodell knows that he has to give that man a chance. Their is too much money at stake. Money talks, and you idiots cursing and throwing tantrums like little kids need to worry about your own lives and families. Haters get your hate on!!! Jamir1, It should be what happened to forgive and forget? Not what happen to forgive and forget.

In your third sentence it should be haters, not hater.

Attached should be attacked

bigest should be biggest and it should be you are one of his biggest fans. Not that you are one of his biggest fan

It should be PETA and the rest of those haters as in plural rather than hater.

But don’t worry, I’m able to decipher through the language of ebonics and actually understand some of this.

Bull freaking S!!!
He “broke the law” and he PAID HIS DEBT TO SOCIETY VIA HIS INCARCERATION!!!
Now you want him to bow and scrape and Stepin Fetchit and ask “MASSA” for forgiveness??? F-THAT!!!
We’re talking pittbulls here….pittbulls!!! Ummmmm white people created the pittbull for fighting and there are still hundreds if not thousands of white pittbull kennel owners all over this country and the world. Vick was only stupid because he tried to do on a large scale what the white man does. Case closed.

Atlanta is stilla highly volitale city, rooted with RACISM.The divide is still Black/White. It was that way long before Michael Vick was drafted and will be that way long after Matt Ryan plays his last game.

this country was built on teh basis of RACISM; the south, especially Atlanta, has been a focal point of the racial divide. The racist will never publically forgive.

Mike Vick and John Rocker, for that matter is better that teh racist in ATlanta.

Mike Vick…I don’t know about the rest of you guys but on a purely selfish note…I really hope he wont end up on the Saints or Panthers!!That would be ugly..You know I have to say the guy did his time so what is the big friggin deal.PETA?Whatever…I don’t see these people on TV boycotting and protesting Horse racing, dog racing greyhounds or huskies.Be that as it may stuff like this always makes me feel kind of conflicted.1st is you try to to teach your kids to do the right thing..because breaking the law is wrong,,,forget the moral side what about …you can go to jail? That’s nothing to aspire to is it?On the other hand boy…life slaps us in the face daily with the hypocrisy that is the AMERICAN way.The country that champions LIBERTY and FREEDOM for all mankind happens to be the last country to outlaw slavery..while we were going to war in Korea and Vietnam to promote freedom we still had a segregated south. We have vehemently opposed most other countries acquiring nuclear weapons yet WE are the only country to ever actually use one and we did it twice,we espouse the virtues of live a clean life, don’t do drugs etc yet the last 3 presidents we elected admitted to using cocaine and or marijuana!!It goes on and on…Jesus Christ said “He who among you that is without sin,let him cast the first stone”Which incidentally tells me that even in those times people loved judging others and actually took pleasure in other people’s misfortunes. So good luck Mike Vick..wish you the best I just hope we don’t have to see this guy twice a year.

I LOST a family member close to me due to an IGNORANT drunk driver and I hope and PRAY that NONE of you reading this comment EVER has to go thru what my family had to go thru. Being a dog owner, I am very protective and loving of my pooch. But I won’t make the MISTAKE of equating the life of a dog to that of a human being. There are NO shelters where you can drop off your kids and have them “humanely” put down the same way as an animal shelter.

The GOP is totally in charge out here in North Fulton where our kids’ tests scores are way above the national average. Down in South Fulton (and city of Atlanta) where the Dems are in charge the scores are below the national average. Same curriculum, same money spent per student…where do you think the problem lies? For all you idiots bringing up the Danny Heatley “DUI”….he was never charged with “DUI”. He was simply driving too fast on Lennox Road and lost control. The man riding with him who died was his best friend. Snyder’s family did not want Heatley to serve time. Here is a quote from our (black) District Attorney:

“This was a traffic-related incident. It was not an intentional incident,” said Howard, adding Heatley and Snyder’s friendship was a factor in the handling of the case.

Killing defenseless dogs is an intentional act, not an accident. There be a difference.

Lets see what 2 years away from the game does to his athleticism. What is up with people staing that he “put Atlanta on the map”? Who cares? Who cares about national press. He CHOSE to drive recklessly, and his CHOICE had a consequence….which was Dan Snyder’s LIFE.

Dude, get with clue…do you really think that the Fulton County School Board, that is controlled by blacks, would spend less in South Fulton than North Fulton. Do your own research. By the way the City of Atlanta and Washington D.C. spend a great deal more per student than North Dakota and Oregon, etc. but the results are not quite the same…sorry, but I’m just keepin’ it real…know what I mean? He was at the mercy of Dany Heatley’s actions…which was a choice to drive like a bat outta hell in the middle of the night on a narrow road. That was Heatley’s CHOICE…and that choice had consequences..which these same AJC reporters and same numbnuts bashing Vick chose to “understand”…”it was an accident”…like hell it was, he didn’t slip and go fast. crabapplejoe, you are the dumbest person on the blog. You consistently make the dumbest statements. You can’t prove your post about the school system that is why you avoided the subject when you were called out on it. Also, who cares what color the DA was that made that statement about the Dan Heatley case, I will inform you of a very important fact, most African Americans do not depend on another African American to speak for or represent them. That was Paul Howard’s opinion of the case that does not mean that all other African American will agree with it just because Paul Howard is an African American, only an uniformed and complete idiot like yourself would make that assumption. Another thing, it does not matter how much alcohol Heatley had been drinking, the fact that he had alcohol in his system he should have been charged with a felony criminal offense. In domestic violence cases most of the time the victim wants to drop the charges but the state continues with the case. So, even though I can understand Snyder’s family wishes, Heatley should still be sitting in a prison because he recklessly and willingly drove that car while impaired and cause the death of another human being. Who’s to say that Heatley won’t do it again and kill someone else. You incarcerate a person to protect society from that individual. Heatley’s actions were more of a threat to my safety and the safety of everyone more than Vick’s. But crabapplejoe, you have showed your true colors a long time ago. So, I am sure you still won’t get it. You are a pathetic human being. I am sure you remember the exchanges we have had in the past. I destroyed you. Vick Supporter, they still won’t get it. Great video, that was the realist I have seen anyone in the media talk about this situation. Deion, Marshall, Warren, and Jamie summed up most so called “Vick Supporters” feelings on the situation. Those who are against Vick are not angry because of what happened to dogs it is hatred for that man and what he represented. Vick was black, young and wealthy, his corn rolls were the fashion of the hip hop youth and he refused to lay down for them. They cursed the man and expected and hoped he would cry like a woman like Vince Young. Instead he stood up for himself and expressed himself. Now, that he is down they want to continue to kick him and finally have him to bow to them by saying, he need to show remorse, lets keep it real, you people want to degrade the man, and take his pride. This thing is bigger than Michael Vick. I have said it from the beginning, it’s bigger than him. Michael Vick represented some people hatred of what they equated as symbols of us. They would rather have Vick act like a female like Vince Young. They hate a strong black man because they are afraid of a strong black man.

“The Black man, before him there were none and after him there will be no more”.

Michael was (is?) an incredibly gifted athlete who just seems to be socially inept. I also think it’s safe to assume that he didn’t graduate anywhere near the top of his class. Yep, I personally think he’s probably a bit dumb, not “black dumb” or “white dumb”, but just “dumb dumb”. No one wants to call him out on any of these flaws for fear of being deemed a racist (which seems to be the classic retort for those opposed to the supposed “Vick haters”).

No one can possibly understand what’s gone on in his head. Why he is the way he is can probably be attributed to any number of things. Childhood expereriences, upbringing, family relationships, environment, the coddling he’s received from teachers and coaches, the adoration of long time friends and blood suckers. Quite simply, I believe that on field glory masked the off field flaws in this young man’s character.

Falcon’s coaches (yeah you…you punk Jim Mora), Arthur Blank (sucker punched by his then ownership weaknesses), teammates (all of you who knew what was going on), and diehard fans all contributed.

Had Michael swiftly admitted to fighting / killing dogs and simultaneously acknowledged his wrong doings / apologized to the entire world (which is an apparent necessity?), I sense NFL executives and media whores would have let him serve a 6 month sentence and do some sort of community service.

But Michael did what Michael has probably always done, he lied to everyone (including himself?). His NFL pimped popularity actually became the anchor which was used to drag him under. Lying to AB and to Roger Goodell (who HAS TO protect the shield) just fanned the flames. Goodell now seems to have his panties in such a wad, that God only know just exactly what he expects from Michael.

The house that everyone built for Michael was simply blown apart in the perfect storm of fame, fortune, and sadly for everyone involved, sheer stupidity.

My hope for Michael is he’s perhaps finally recognizing his skill on the field and his inabilities off it. I hope he seeks some counseling and looks to rebuild from the inside out. Sadly though, I don’t think he’ll find peace for many, many years.

Vick’s record as a starter for the Falcons

41-39-1 (not inpressive)

2002 9-6-1
2003 5-11
2004 11-5
2005 8-8
2006 7-9 *he finally starts all 16 games and gives us this*

By all means bring him back to the NFL. Gives other teams a better chance at winning. Come on people Vick as a player is no real threat to any team. May give a few highlite reels but that’s it. If he gets to come back that’s fine. But, he won’t lite up the score board or his teams winning persentage.

It is so funny how people judge each other like we haven’t did no wrong. People need to look at their own lives and their surrounding before they start saying what we should and shouldn’t do! Cause if the shoe was on the other foot you would want a second chance or your family member you would want someone to give them a second chance so why Vick cant have one….
Vick made a mistake dont get me wrong but to tear a MAN down to the lowest point is hrush and I bet most of these people on here is calling they self Christian or a Godly person but you turn your nose up to a person. That is not GOD at all. Like God said in his word He who is without SIN cast the first stone. ( Now ask yourself can I cast a stone) If we truly live by that then 99% of these comments wont even be on here. Its always funny to see how people react or turn their back against other people but they would want an second chances as well.
Mark Bradley comment that “Michael Vick needs to talk to us, and soon. He needs to tell us he’s sorry and that his time behind bars has changed him, made him wiser, redoubled his determination not to mess up the rest of his life. He needs now to throw himself on the mercy of the American public and see how merciful it can be.” Why do you feel that Vick need to do this and when does Sorry dont count for nothing anymore. How many time does this man have to say Sorry it dont matter if he mean it or not he said it, he did his time let it go! But people like you just keep throwing lighter fluid to the fire to help your rating. You could care less about Vick and you can tell in your story one minute you are for Vick but in the same breath you are still throwing him under the bus make up your mind either you are with him or not. So Vick keep your head up “MAKE YOUR HATERS YOUR MOTIVATORS” Then the sad things the World it self is full of Sinners and Wrong doers do we tell them that they owe us a Sorry NO!!!!….. They target Vick cause he had money is the bottom line for a fact cause right after that happen this guy got caught do the same things to dogs and cats and was worst but PETA wasn’t after him why cause he was a regular person and he was broke!!!! So to me they are not doing it cause they love animals they are doing because they want to be in the MEDIA spot light!!!

The Dogfighter, I was watching the games wishing we didn’t have an injury pron QB. Look at 2006 his 1st full season 7-9. You have no argument. If he started all the other years we would have had a record of 35-45. He didn’t start all the games in 2004 when we went 11-5. Thank goodness we had back-ups!

By the way dogfighter I did Vicks stats a favor by not including his 2001 rookie season. If I did the 41-39-1 record would have been worse.

These people that are pointing out that hunting, horseracing, etc. are no worse than dogfighting are missing the point. It doesn’t matter if you think that Vick didn’t do anything morally worse than these other activities(which suspesiously are “white” activities), what he did was ILLEGAL. You think it’s a stupid law, or that hunting should be made illegal too? Fine. Contact your representatives. But don’t skirt the fact that Vick presumably knowingly(and if he didn’t know, ignorance is no defense) broke a law, lied to his employer and the authorities about it, and then was sentenced to a term within the sentencing guidelines. That is not a “mistake”. A mistake is a one-time occurrence. If you repeat the same actions over and over, then by definition it is not a mistake, it is a decision.

Vick has served his time in jail, and if he successfully completes the rest of his sentence without incident, he should be free to pursue whatever employment he can obtain. But make no mistake about it: the Falcons, the NFL, and its fans owe Vick NOTHING. If teams decide he is not worth the risk or the bad publicity, that doesn’t make them racist. That is their prerogative, society doesn’t owe anyone anything but a fair chance, which Vick had and blew.

What the hell are you talking about. Because Vick is a football player that makes what he did OK? Bradley is as sick as Vick. Why don’t you hire him as a sitter for your kid’s pets? That man has no concious fiber in his body. Compassion you either have or you don’t. Moving on with his life? The poor guy has to wear an ancle bracelet? How about a noose around his neck. Would be more appropriate for this f..ing criminal. He will not change. The only people on your side a football fans with the same mindset as Vick.

Slavery – Mano? There isn’t a person alive today that does not have a slaveholding ancestor somewhere. Slavery has been acceptable throughout history- Isreal, Roman Empire, Parthis, Mongol, Chinese, Thai, Africa. It is still widely practiced on the African continent and in parts of Asia. American slavery is a nonstarter for me anyway, with my family emigrating from Sweden in 1882. So much energy on a football player. I hope he picks himself up. I hope he can pay off his creditors. I hope he picks better freinds and keeps the moochers from himself. Let’s not call what he did a mistake. Let’s call it what it was. A series of wrong decisions to conduct criminal acts and a criminal conspiracy. Good luck to him

I see in the AJC headline today that he arrived home with his “entourage.” Wasn’t the whole idea of having an “entourage” of parasitic homeboys what got him into trouble to start with? Why can’t these faux celebs just get in the car and go somewhere without a cordon of flunkies tagging along? Be a man, Mike, and live your own life. You can start by getting rid of the posse.

The Facts

May 21st, 2009
11:43 am

“crabapplejoe, you are the dumbest person on the blog. You consistently make the dumbest statements. You can’t prove your post about the school system that is why you avoided the subject when you were called out on it. ”

BigEasy, I know you are a Vick supporter, and therefor very intellectually deficient, but here are the facts which show the reality of educational spending around the state:

Spending per pupil:
Nation: 9,099
State: 8,595
Atlanta: 12,188 (highest)
Cobb County: 7,922
Fayette County: 7,940
Forsyth County: 7,687

Students Per Teacher Ratio:
State: 14.3
Atlanta: 13.7 (lowest)
Cobb: 13.9
Forsyth: 14.9
Fayette: 14.2

Reading/English Language Arts Proficiency:
State: 87.1
Atlanta: 80.1 (Lowest – Shocking!)
Cobb: 89.5
Fayette: 95.4
Forsyth: 96.0

Math Proficiency:
State: 79.4
Atlanta: 70.6 (Lowest – Shocking!)
Cobb: 83.3
Fayette: 92.0
Forsyth: 93.4

Graduation Rate:
State: 72.3
Atlanta: 51.8 (Lowest again – Shocking!)
Cobb: 73.3
Fayette: 80.6
Forsyth: 74.0

So what these numbers irrfutabely prove is that spending per pupil is much higher then in Atlanta city schools, which are 85% black, then they are in the rest of the state, including the majority white districts by a very large margin. So this completely disproves the idiotic comment by a poster stating that education spending is being spent disproportianately in white districts over black districts due to racial motivations. The reality is the exact opposite.

Yet despite this much greater level of spending per pupil and lowest student/teacher, the Atlanta city schools consistently perform at attrocious levels in all areas (Reading/Math Proficiency and Graduation rates) that are much lower then the state average, and drastically lower then the natioinal average. Yet the districts with the lower spending per pupil and higher student/teacher ratio have much higher performances then the state or national average. Hmmmmmmm, wonder why that is? Just goes to show that personal desire and resposibility is the biggest factor in educational performance, not spending.

And here’s the source for you since you all are too lazy to look it up for yourselves:

What a load of horse manure!

People do not “HATE” a particular individual unless that person has mistreated others and put themselves above everyone else.

Can you guess why Michael Vick is now “HATED” but Walter Payton, Jackie Robinson and Hank Aaron are not?

The best way to get rid of your “HATERS” is to stop being a rude, obnoxious, selfish, law-breaking, self-absorbed PUNK and start having consideration for others besides yourself.

Turn your “HATERS” into your FRIENDS.

Hey What. You do not have to reinvent the wheel (Mike Vick’s record/Stats). There is a website called NFL.com it has all the information you need.

In his rookie season Mike Vick played in 8 games and started only two. You believe he is responsible for the result of 8 games that he did not play in?

Your parents must have been operating a meth lab when you were conceived. Logic and research are clearly not one of your strengths.

In 2004 Mike vick missed only one game. All these facts are available at NFL.com.

I don’t need to look up any of Mike Vick’s stats because the only one that I notice with any team is wins and losses. His was 41-39-1. And you’re proud of that!! What a joke! But he ran for over a 1000 yards in a season. Big deal! Still 41-39-1.

Like I’ve said plenty of times, if Matt Ryan can’t lead this team to wins then get us another QB. I’m a Falcon fan 1st, pure and simple.

Mike you owe no-one anymore apology’s, you’ve already done that the best way you could before you went in prison for something people could really give a real crap about to begin with(check your local human society). Like Brett and Deion you’ve done your right of passage via the Falcons(in your case, playing behind the smallest Oline in the league) of which the 1st thing they strengthened once going back to a one dimensional QB was build up the size of the line that he’s handicapped to and the average fan can grasp. I don’t care which team you end up on you’re going to swear you’re in heaven and I’ve already bought my tape for the show that we are going to get when you(behind an at least average sized line) play the Falcons. If people didn’t see the “Remorse” that they are seeking from you already, they aren’t looking for it. The Creator is the only entity that you have left to impress. Only God knows the true motives and intents of the heart. Only God knows the deep-down soul of a man.
How many second-third-numerous chances did you get when you made mistakes? Are you infallible? Are you perfect? Are you greater than Michael Vick because you didn’t torture animals? Well maybe you didn’t but did you lie, steal, committed adultery, covet, dishonor your parents? Do you hate your neighbor because he’s different? Do you think negative thoughts and say negative things about and to people? Are you the voice of conscience and reason? Are you infallible? Are you perfect? Did you get more chances than you deserve? Who are you to determine if his debt to society is not enough? Are you infallible? Are you perfect? Did you have a chance to right a mistake you have made, today?

But if I were Goddell, would he return to the NFL? Hell no. I am so sick and tired of all these hoodlum athletes and “celebrities” these days. Make them get a regular job and feel the pain of what they did. They need a wakeup call, and if we keep excusing people, and giving celebs passes, they’ll never learn their lessons. Sets a bad example and is jacking up our society and kids. That’s why I don’t go to pro games anymore; I’m not giving those criminals my money. @The Facts: Thanks for taking the time to pull the educational data which proves my point. I wasn’t going to bother ’cause folks like that moron BidEasy830 will just find a way to ignore it. Thank goodness he wasn’t smart enough to get into law school because his grasp of the nuances of our legal system certainly is limited. I love how he fains concern for the life of Dan Snyder, when the reality is he would probably piss on Snyder’s grave cause “he’s was just some smart ass, hockey playin’ white boy”. He pretends that his concerns somehow trump the feelings of the Snyder family. Not to mention he has no grasp on the facts of the case. One minute Heatley was “DUI” the next minute “he had some drinks and that’s just as bad”. The really sad thing is that if you have a jury trial here in Fulton County you’re likely to get twelve BigEasys as the jury of your “peers”….imagine that. ROTFLMAO if it weren’t so sad.

Vick doesn’t owe you or anyone else a freakin apology for his actions. He did that prior to going to jail and served his time (with good behavior) in the prison system as deemed by the American Justice System. His humble character and gestures of a good faith return into society are above and beyond what any of your arrogant pricks would do for shooting a deer in the head…LEGALLY may I add but equally as INHUMANE.

Arthur Blank is foolish for releasing him from the Falcons organization. Vick is the spark the lit all of the eagerness around this team a few years ago. We haven’t had that kind of magic since and Atlanta fans are yearning for it back. Bring Mike back and let’s get the good times flowing again.

Mike…keep your head up and stay positive. I wish you the best and look forward to many more great things from you! You are a man that was sacrificed from a narrowminded group of PETA lovers. It’s sad that this much attention can be garnered over dogfighting but the 1000’s of children molested on the internet everyday can’t get the same attention. I mean what really matters here people!! Pets…children…you make the call.

You ignorants who are putting all of this energy into condemning Vick can truly find other more worthy causes to channel it through. I am a pet lover and owner but not obsessor. PETA and others with this “Mike has to ask for my forgiveness” mentality are foolish freaks that need to get a grip on the real issues facing our country and future.

I would like to genuinely thank you for writing this story. This was
his first offense and there is not criminal record in his backgroound.
And, yes I believe it was a vicious racial attack on people that did not want him from the beginning. He did NOT kill a human, he did NOT rape little girls or boys for that matter, he did NOT drive under the influence and kill people, he did NOT gamble on football, he did NOT
steal or rob anyone. See, it was not a nice thing he did but it is
not something that raised to the level of the pure hatred spewed on this man. I see in him a young man who has made some bad decisions like a large number of young men have today. He did not have the sense or the strength to move on and up away from his “homeboys” and live
the life of a person of his statue because he did not feel he belonged. This is so sad, so very sad and I will pray from him.

The problem with human is nobody thinks about the fact that they or some else is human. We are always ready to say the hell with someone for their downfalls, but never ready to help someone up when they are down. We would rather talk about things they did. I am a fan of believing in someone no matter what they have done. Vick does not deserve the privilege of a reinstatement in the NFL. He is now employed with a construction company. He is one of the lucky ones, to have a job. There are many decent people who are currently unemployed. He also hid hundreds of thousands of dollars, before going to prison. It is not like he is destitute. He didnt give the dogs a second chance, before torturing and killing them. He shouldnt have a second chance in the NFL.

Me doth think Michael Vic would be better off living a simple life. Obviously living the high life caused him a multitude of sins. All I think is that one should serve the time of they commit the crime. My nephew had to serve over one year for 1/10 of gram of crack cocaine in his possession. He is an addict. For all who love him he needs rehabilitation, not prison. But my nephew served his time.
Michael Vic did not! And to think, if only for a brief moment , that any team on the NFL would think of signing him. I do not get it and hopefully, if they do, there will be fan retaliation!
Michael Vic is not a role model. Michael Vic, just like my nephew, is a convicted felon and should be treated as such the rest of his life. There is little opportunity for redemption here!

Humane Society sees Vick as ally, not pariah
CEO Pacelle angers many in animal rights faction by working with NFL star

Human Society President and CEO Wayne Pacelle says Michael Vick has “got celebrity, he’s got a story and he can make some difference on this issue.”

By William C. Rhoden

updated 1:36 p.m. ET, Fri., May 22, 2009
Wayne Pacelle doesn’t mind a good fight. He’s used to them.

In 15 years with the Humane Society of the United States, the last five as its chief executive, Pacelle has taken on many animal rights issues, including the brutalization of seals, slaughter plants in California and the proliferation of puppy mills.

None of the battles have been more intense than this new one, in which he recently broke ranks with much of the animal rights community and forged a partnership with Michael Vick, the fallen N.F.L. quarterback.

In 2007, Vick was sentenced to 23 months in prison for his role in a dogfighting operation. He was released this week and is serving the rest of his sentence in home confinement. The airwaves have crackled with speculation over where he will land.

Few expected that he would land with the Humane Society. Pacelle announced on Tuesday that the Humane Society and Vick would work together to eradicate dogfighting among youths.

“I’m getting a little bit of a beating here and there,” Pacelle said Wednesday in a telephone interview. “But you’ve got to do what you think is right.”

While debates on sports talk radio programs continue to focus on the narrow issue of whether Vick deserves a second chance to play football, the larger, wiser issue is Vick’s personal rehabilitation and the role he can play in discouraging animal abuse.

The Humane Society’s position has nothing to do with endorsing Vick’s return to football but rather with finding a way to use his visibility to fight the scourge of dogfighting, which Pacelle said is gaining popularity with African-American and Hispanic teenagers in urban areas. The Humane Society has begun anti-dogfighting initiatives in those areas, he said.

“These are the sorts of programs that Mike can help with because kids still do look up to him,” Pacelle said. “Our folks on the street say, ‘Hey, he’s still a celebrity, they still respect this guy and he can talk to them and tell them how far he fell: from the top of the sports world to the standard-issue room of the federal penitentiary.’

“He’s got celebrity, he’s got a story and he can make some difference on this issue.”

‘I want to end dogfighting’

The Humane Society’s announcement about its partnership with Vick, and the reaction to it, underline complexities that lie between raw outrage over the mistreatment of animals and the rehabilitation of the humans who commit the crimes. While all animal rights groups are committed to protecting animals, their tactics and philosophies differ. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals advocates euthanizing rescued fighting dogs, for example, while a group like Best Friends advocates their rehabilitation.

Many see Vick as a pariah to be avoided under any circumstance. In a phone interview this week, Dan Shannon of PETA said, “We don’t think that it’s the animal protection community’s place to facilitate a convicted dogfighter’s comeback, which would be the case if one were to work with him.”

But Pacelle sees Vick as a potentially valuable ally in the fight against dogfighting.

“I understand that there are people who don’t want to work with Michael Vick,” he said. “I want to end dogfighting. And he may be a very important role player in that process.”

Pacelle added: “If he’s sincere, and if he’s committed in the long run to this goal for whatever reasons, he can be an agent of change, he can steer young kids in urban communities’ vile activity toward more productive interactions with dogs.

“Our goal is not endless punitive treatment of Michael Vick. Our goal is to eradicate dogfighting in America.”

Falcons support Vick after release
May 20: Brian Finneran, Michael Jenkins, and Mike Smith of the Falcons say they hope Michael Vick can play football again, and they wish him the best.

Pacelle met with Vick in prison in Leavenworth, Kan., on Sunday to discuss the partnership. He said the meeting was requested by Billy Martin, who represented Vick in his criminal case. “He said that Mike wanted to talk,” Pacelle said. “He wanted to be part of the solution and not part of the problem.”

Asked how he felt about winding up in a face-to-face meeting with Vick in prison, Pacelle said: “It was a place that two years ago I would have never thought I would have been. We said some really tough stuff about Michael Vick.”

I’m not convinced that Mike is completely turned around’
Is there justification for being skeptical of Vick’s motives? Of course. Vick is eager — desperate — to remake his image.

And even though he announced the partnership Tuesday, Pacelle said he was not completely sold. “I’m not convinced that Mike is completely turned around,” he said, “and I’m not convinced that he’s going to make the most of this opportunity. But I do think he should have a chance to demonstrate that he is changed and that he can be part of the solution. Call me a participating skeptic.”

Regardless of how you feel about Vick, the morality of the issue he represents — cruelty to animals — is not cut and dried, black and white.

The Humane Society has introduced a large patch of gray.

The man is a sociopath! He didn’t make a mistake, he cheerfully tortured those dogs. He never said he was sorry for what he did to those dogs…..he’s only sorry he got caught.
I don’t care if he lives or dies……well maybe a chain around his sorry neck would be ok!

Thanks for your thoughtful column, Mark. Millions of Americans are currently incarcerated and thousands re-enter society every day of the week. Every man and woman released from lock-up deserves an opportunity to rebuild their lives and engage in gainful employment. Instead of ostracizing Michael Vick and banishing him to the margins of society, he should be embraced and supported as he rebuilds his life and figures out how to be the best Michael that he can be.

I’m a bit confused about all of the comments about how Vick never apologized. He apologized after he plead guilty. He apologized to the Falcons organization as well as saying, “I want to apologize to all the young kids out there for my immature acts and, you know, what I did was, what I did was very immature so that means I need to grow up. I totally ask for forgiveness and understanding as I move forward to bettering Michael Vick the person, not the football player,” Vick said.

“I take full responsibility for my actions … I am totally responsible.”

So how many times does the man need to apologize?

What is all of this talk about Vick never apologizing. Just type “vick apology” into google and you’ll see multiple sources citing his apology.

“First, I want to apologize, you know, for all the things that — that I’ve done and that I have allowed to happen. I want to personally apologize to commissioner [Roger] Goodell, [owner] Arthur Blank, coach Bobby Petrino, my Atlanta Falcons teammates, you know, for our — for our previous discussions that we had. And I was not honest and forthright in our discussions, and, you know, I was ashamed and totally disappointed in myself to say the least,” Vick said.

“I totally ask for forgiveness and understanding as I move forward to bettering Michael Vick the person, not the football player,” Vick said.

You hypocrits. You all talk about Vick like you Christ yourself. Let the first man that has lived without sin cast the first stone. Each and everyone of us has lied, stole, deceived, done something wrong, made a mistake, made bad decisions, but when your dirt isn’t put out for others to see it’s okay. I don’t condone what he did. But goodness you guys act as if be blew up the twin tower, killed some humans, enough already. You guys are not living in a glass house. Stop with the foolishness. If you are a so call christian, you should be ashame. How can you be a christian, go to church, pray and ask for forgiveness for you sins, and you can not forgive others of their’s. Christ died for all of our sins, so that we could be saved. That means he died for Vicks sins as well. You give you the right to give him eternal death. Enough already. He has done his time.

Let get this straight. We are talking about some very vicious dogs. Some dogs who should be banned anyway. So many ppl lose their lives, or have to go to the hospital because of these particular dogs. Most of you ppl who are saying these ridiculous things, like he a pathological liar, he should be put to death, you guys really sound stupid, ignorant to say such things. He who is without sin, let him cast the first stone. As long as you are in the flesh you will sin. The very ones who are saying such things, are liars, are deceitful, and God knows what else. Only difference between Vick and Us. Is that his dirt was brought to light. We all have skeletons in the closet. We all have our own dirty little secrets. Enough already. Grow up and get a meaningful life. All this publicity he’s getting is only a distraction. We have far more greater things going in this world beside this mess here. Michael Vicks wrong doing did not deserve as much attention as it has received. PPl are losing their homes, jobs, lives, and all we have to do is talk about Michael Vick. Boy what is this world coming to. This isn’t making nor breaking any of us. This isn’t putting any food on our table, maybe the paper’s but certainly not the readers. What about our soldiers, what about the social security you and i will not receive, what about our education system, what about your grandparents or parents who can not afford their medicine, what about the ppl who are homeless due to this economy, lost of thier jobs, what about all the children that are in foster care, what about all the ppl who are receive unemployment, what about our college graduates who can not find a job, enough said, i hope who get the point now. Enough already with Michael Vick. I will pray for him, you and me. I pray that the lord renew our hearts, guide us in the correct paths, forgives us of our sins, our debtors, grant us our daily bread, and to continue to have mercy on our souls in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

Mark, I respectfully disagree on two fronts. First, Vick is unrepentant. He displays an inexcusable arrogance and sense of entitlement. He used his (undeserved) accumulated wealth to fund knowingly illegal activity. OK, he did his time in prison. But I ask you, how many other convicted felons are invited to return to their former jobs after they are released? Not too many. The mere possibility of this occurring is a blatant example of what is wrong with professional sports today. He may be a decent athlete, but he is no sportsman. And he doesn’t “deserve” to play football.

Second, I have to take issue with your opinion of him rekindling the flame of the Falcons franchise. That would have been Chris Chandler when he took his team to the Super Bowl.

And just for the record, I am not a “PETA person”. I am a human being who has a great love for professional football. One who hopes the NFL will not let him down by allowing Vick back among it’s ranks. One who will be so sorely disappointed if that should occur, not only will I walk away from being a fan of the NFL, but will also actively boycott any company that chooses to advertise with them… and that will be too bad.

I don’t think Mike has to apoligize for anything or prove anything to Goodell. Gooddell is not GOD. And has no heaven or hell to put Vick in. When we start valuing a dogs life over a human being then we have problems. The system showed us all that a black man’s life was not worth more than that of a dog. Yes he may have been wrong for what he did, but there were other alternatives than jail. Hit him where it hurts in the pocket. This whole thing practically destroyed this man’s life. For what? Where were/are the PETA people when many animals are Euthanized and when animals are put down for attacking others. You don’t see them out advocating rehab for dog or picketting those who put these dogs down. Is this a double standard or what? As for football let the man play. I think he will surprise most and those teams who did not want him will be sorry.

It is not up to the American people to judge or forgive Mike Vick he just has to move on with his life and try to stay out of trouble and people need to get out of his way and let him accomplish this. I personnally could care less what he does. If he plays football I will of course watch because he was a very exciting player. If he doesn’t I will watch someone else who is an exciting player. He committed a crime and went to jail and now he is out that should be it. He does not owe any of us an apology because none of our friends or family were hurt because of Mike Vicks illegal actions. He hurt himself, his family and the Atlanta Falcons. The issue has been settled in the courts and need only be settled with the Falcons organization. Get off your soap boxes America because I guarantee that all of you have dirty little secrets and have done far worse things than Mike Vick none of us are perfect angels and none of us are God,Buddah, Allah or any other Diety so our simple and useless forgiveness does not matter.

I just wanted to say I read a horrifying article today. I read about a pitbull named “Miss Mercy” she was named this after a cop on beat found her haullering and engulfed in flames in Baltimore. The pitbull was doused in gasoline and set on fire. on lookers did nothing, some were laughing. It was later found that there was clear evidence that this poor dog was a fighting dog. give me a break and quit quoting sripture to suit your purposes people. God forgives, yes, and thank goodness he does, BUT when there are rules in place that say “hey DON’T do this or you’ll be OUT” then don’t frickin do it! Yeah, he paid his price for his charges-because he should have, but he should not be allowed back in the NFL. He knew the rules-just like everyone else. Go have a great life MV, hopefully he is truly sorry for what he did-but his career in the NFL should be over.

Second chance? Why give him a second chance? He was given a huge shot, something none of us will ever have, to make MILLIONS of dollars. He chose to commit an illegal act that would jepordize that-HIS choice. He should have done his time and he should not be allowed back in.

The real reason I’m against it is I have 2 boys ages 4 and 6. I do not want them growing up in a world that does not value rules. I want them to know that if you screw up, you have to be penalized. Period.

I think this entire thing with Michael Vick is so rediculous. There was no need for it to be as publicised as it was and there have been murders of human beings that people are still walking around free. No one made a big deal about the dog fighting when they did a story about it on 20/20 . The man did make a mistake, and he has served his time. Leave the man alone and let him play football. They need to work on finding a way to keep the drugs out of our country and do more about our school systems and homelessness as well as, feeding the hungry and sheltering those with out homes. I would say those things are a little bit more important than some fighting dogs.

Please, he paid way more then the price he should have paid. There is no way the punisment fit the crime here. I’ve had put bulls all my life and I have them now. I don’t fight my dogs, but I know hundreds of people that do. My friends are constantly getting their dogs taken from them and the Animal Control units give their dogs right back. Everyone knows they fight their dogs, but they still give their dogs right back. The only reason this was such a big deal is because of the person. What about the other people at the dog fights? There are at least 30 to 50 people at the fights, but only Vick and his associates were arrested? Give me a break, no one cared about those dogs, they just wanted to bring down another athlete. Where is the out rage for Leonard Little. He got drunk and killed someone’s mother/wife and did not miss a snap. A few years later got another DUI and still didn’t serve time. She was someone’s mother. We are talking about dogs here. I’m not down playing this at all. I love dogs and agree punishment was in order, but 2 years in jail and $250 million was way extreme!!!! All these people complaining about the dogs being killed, but none of them are hollering about Gray Hounds. They make those dogs run and as soon as they can’t win anymore what happens? You guessed it, they are executed, the sport is legal and no one gives a damn. Why aren’t the people killing those dogs in jail? Because no one knows anyone in dog racing that’s why. There are a lot of people out there with their values screwed up!!! I would love to see him come back and I wish him nothing but the best.

You have to be a pretty sad sole to see someone punished so severely and still not have any place in your heart not to give any young person a second chance…where I grew up a lot of people fought pit bulls…it’s not as evil as some of you may think…and for all the animal lovers, I’d love to have a room filled with pit bulls and allow you to go pet them. Dogs, might not love humans as much as we think…because we’ve domesticated them and forced them into a lifestyle we appreciate doesn’t mean they appreciate it as well…if you weren’t a person brought up in poverty please don’t judge those who were…when you grow up around groups of people who can’t afford hobbies or classes you find yourself doing things that may be illegal or criticized by the public just to get away from everyday life. I say that because that’s how I grew up and found myself doing those things without thinking of the consequences…and they are apart of my life now, whether I like them or not (unfortunately)…I support what was written in this article and hopefully others will begin to see things the same way…Give the guy a chance to make up for his mistakes…

I hope the Mike Vick story ends up ending in a happy one. I believe he has every opportunity to redeem himself on and off the field. For the sake of many young fans out there, who are still waiting for his return, I hope he can come back and lead a team like he did the Falcons. Many people question his ability to be a quarterback in the NFL, but most of them tend to overlook the ability that he has to win games. He is an extraordinary talent with charisma and talent that no other quarterback has ever possessed. I’m rooting for him because no matter what people say about the man, everyone deserves a second chance.

Michael Vick was one of the flashiest QB’s I have ever seen play in the NFL and there is absolutely no reason why he sould not be reinstated. In this country, once your done with your sentance of prison, or whatever you may get, you are done. Free. Okay to pursue whatever kind of life you want. If I get suspened from school, it’s not like “OK, your suspension is done, but since what you did was so horrible, you will never be allowed to play on the basketball team again or be allowed to purchase lunch from the cafeteria. You will also permanatly lose your electives.” That is not the way justice is run in our country, but a bunch of Poorly Educated Teen Activists (yep, PETA) seem to think that way. What he did was wrong, I completely agree with that, but it has gotten to a point where it is now time to take a step back, get off his jockstrap, ans let him do what he does best with whatever team is willing to take the gamble. Hopefully, Singletary will change his mind and be the one who gives him a second chance because I can’t imagine him playing anywhere else. Wherever he goes, I wish him the best of luck in trying to win back the public.

Hey – let’s leave the guy alone. What he did was wrong, and he has paid his debt. Vick lost his job, & millions of dollars in salary and endorsements. Will he ever recover? Probably not, but he deserves a 2nd chance. In baseball years ago, I believe one Los Angeles Dodger & later a New York Yankee pitcher, was banned several times from the league because of drug problems, yet always came back. A certain linebacker from Baltimore appeared to be part of a group that was present when 2 people were murdered in Atlanta after a Super Bowl, and was never convicted of anything. He’s featured on Pro Bowls, ect and makes millions of dollars. There are a zillion more situations, but there is no need o list them all. Mike screwed up and got caught. People make mistakes and everybody deserves to have a second chance…and this is what Mike Vick deserves. Sure, he was involved in dogfighting, but people lets get over it. It happened months ago. Forgive and forget. Vick, if you are reading this, just rid of all the negative people in your life and don’t pay attention to the things these so-called “band-wagon hopping” people have to say about you. (Mind you, these are some of the same people that was cheering and supporting you when you was bringing wins to the GA Dome, and now they want to say degrading and negative stuff about you just because you got into some legal trouble. Up until his arrest, Michael Vick had earned a well deserved level of respect as a role model that very athletes or celebrities would be worthy of. Yes, he screwed up, but who hasn’t? The big difference with him is that his mistake had extreme consequences.

When I was a kid, we would go to the county dump at night to shoot rats with our 410s, just for the fun of it and nobody cared. So what’s the difference in what we were doing and what Mr. Vick did? I’ll tell you. Political correctness.

For reasons beyond my comprehension, people think of animals that are used as pets as some kind of higher life form. Where do you draw the line? Who hasn’t heard the term “the only good snake is a dead snake.” How about people that shoot big game just so they can stuff the damn thing to hang on their wall. Oh, that cool. Think about this, how cool would it be to shoot a stray kitty cat and hang it head on the wall? You would be locked up.

Have you ever seen one of those spring traps people use to trap beavers? You know the legal ones that you see in all the sporting goods stores. When a starving little critter goes for the bait it slams shut crushing it’s leg. Thats OK, after all, they can get out if they want. All they have to do is gnaw their own leg off and they can walk away on the remaining three. If you build a better mousetrap, people will beat a path to your door. Build a better dog tray and you go to prison.

When Michael Vick was busted, he stood up like a man, took full responsibility for his actions, accepted the consequences, and paid his debt without making excuses. That deserves respect for that. Mark the man’s tab “paid in full” and leave him alone.

I want him to toss the ball with anyone who wants to play with him. Then I want him to sit on a bench and talk to anyone who wants to talk, including that media who are bound to show up. No questions would be off limits.

If he does that, It will be over and he will be able to get on with his life. Of course, he needs to do this on a regular basis. In fact, I would like to see other celebrities and athletes do this. CGS

Dear Gerald Williams;

The point that you seem to be missing is that dogfighting is against the law. Whether it is right or wrong is of no consequence. The law is the law. There are ways for us to change laws. It happens all the time.Think of all of the laws that discriminated against Black people, or women or Gays that have been changed and are being changed. Still, in a civilized society, we all have to obey laws until such time as the law is changed.

I think that too many young people have had their lives ruined by possession of minute amounts of controlled substances, needlessly. But the inescapable fact is that they broke the law. Michael even went so far as to lie when asked about his involvement, which makes it worse. He lied to people (Blank) who had put a lot at stake because they believed in him. He lied to people who would have done most anything to help him.

To simply ignore a law because you disagree with it is anarchy. We as Americans deserve better than that. We as Americans are capable of better than that.

Michael broke the law, and suffered and will continue to suffer the consequences, but he is only a victim of his own lack of integrity. CGS

First of all anyone that thinks that Vick as served his time and should be forgiven is a joke. He could never serve enough time for his crimes against those animals. I agree that he doesn’t owe the public and apology. He owes the apology to those animals. I am also amazed that most of you are quoting the bible in defense of this horrible human being. I truly doubt that God is up in heaven supporting this man and his pitiful little football career. I mean come on people! This is football we are talking about here. Do you really think that a GAME is more important than the lives of all of those murdered animals?! It is a GAME! He a sad little man that is okay at playing a GAME and so you people think he should be forgiven for mass murder?! Really? Why don’t we just bust Manson out of prison to see if he can toss a ball around? I mean if he’s good at it then, it all be worth it, right? I mean if you think about it he didn’t actually even kill anyone, so hell, lets just forgive him. Then we can start an entire football team of nutjobs that kill for fun.

By the way to everyone that is quoting the bible you guys need to brush up on your studies because in the first chapter of the Bible, God made mankind responsible for HIs animals (genesis 1-28) All animals are God’s animals and we are answerable to God for our treatment, care and protection of them. (Psalm 50:10)…so what will Vick’s answer be when God asks him why he felt the need to murder His animals. Do you think God will forgive him just because he was an awesome football player.

well well, lets see … he created a box to trap his female dogs in, so to be raped by paid owners of male pitt bulls. he also removed all of her teeth so she couldn’t interfere with the raping! he hung and tortured his “non winning” dogs in unspeakable and indescribable acts, that he himself participate and witnessed, with only money and power fueling him. he used weaker ones as training opponents for his fighters! he lived a double life and i am sorry, but he has not done enough to be allowed in a forum that he can excel in money and popularity and remind us of his cruelty he imposed on innocent, beautiful, strong dogs, who till this day carry the scars and history!
what he should do is …
-dog walking
-dog washing
-vet asst. in emergency rooms for all animals
-asst. in euthanize normal dogs and cats that go unwanted or unadoptable.
-he should clean up after sick and abused dying animals.
-he should see and work in places that care for all kinds of animals.
-he needs direct exposure with them.
yea, some of you don’t look at animals as important as humans, but we are caretakers of them and GOD created all creatures … GREAT and SMALL!!! mike vick should not play in the NFL … period.
you’ve done you physical time in prison, now do your penance with the animals and learn how to respect and be grateful just for another chance, which some of us never get.
