He’s not quite free and clear, but he’s out of prison. That’s a start. Michael Vick can begin to get on with the rest of his life, and we should wish him well. Because he’s not some demon. He’s a human being who made dire mistakes.
And he continues to pay for them. He’ll wear an ankle bracelet. He can’t go to a bar. He can’t vote. He’ll need to earn his way back into the good graces of Roger Goodell and the American public, and it won’t be easy. But there’s a story waiting to be written, a story as uplifting as these past two years have been deflating.
Michael Vick needs to talk to us, and soon. He needs to tell us he’s sorry and that his time behind bars has changed him, made him wiser, redoubled his determination not to mess up the rest of his life. He needs now to throw himself on the mercy of the American public and see how merciful it can be.
Because a lot of people would be willing to forgive him. (Not to forget, but to forgive.) I know. I’m among them. But he has to ask.
Understand: Vick wasn’t a victim of runaway justice. He admitted his crimes and has paid a price almost beyond measure. But his life isn’t over, and so long as life remains there’s the possibility of redemption. He’s 28. He has time. He can change our perception yet again.
Sorry, there are no polls available at the moment. He deserves the chance to play football. PETA will protest, but PETA is famous for overplaying its hand. (Have Vick submit to a brain scan? Who’s writing this stuff – Joe McCarthy? Arthur C. Clarke?) If he finds an owner willing to absorb the backlash, he can make us remember why it was we came to notice Michael Vick. Contrary to revisionist history, he’s not a bad quarterback. Three Pro Bowls, as I recall.
He won’t be playing here, and that’s for the best. He needs a restart, and the Falcons have a different quarterback. But that doesn’t mean we can excise his name from team annals. Vick rekindled the flame when this franchise had gone cold. He made us care. That’s why it hurt so deeply to see him fail.
And it wasn’t Vick the player who failed. It was Vick the person, Vick the stealth dogfighter, the Vick nobody around here saw. (You say you knew he was a bad guy all along? On what evidence? The water bottle? Please.) His failure loosed a deluge of racial back-and-forth that missed the point, for this was never about a demographic profile. This was about one man and his misdeeds, one man who owned a city but went to jail.
And now he’s out. And now he can move forward, and so can we. Amid all the motion, here’s a hope that he gets it right from now on, so right that in five years we’ll see Michael Vick not as a fallen idol but as an indomitable soul who triumphed over abject disgrace.
Yes, he did wrong. But after all that has transpired, Michael Dwayne Vick has it within him to do right. I’ve been disappointed in him, but I’m not yet ready to give up. Not on this one. There’s a heart in there somewhere, a good heart. I believed as much on that sorrowful day he entered his plea, and I believe it still.

crabapplejoe, the “incident” wasn’t an involvement of two white friends. Dan Snyder wasn’t driving and had no control over that vehicle. He was at the mercy of Dany Heatley’s actions…which was a choice to drive like a bat outta hell in the middle of the night on a narrow road. That was Heatley’s CHOICE…and that choice had consequences..which these same AJC reporters and same numbnuts bashing Vick chose to “understand”…”it was an accident”…like hell it was, he didn’t slip and go fast. His foot didn’t “accidentally” push down on the accelerator. He MEANT to drive that fast…and what he MEANT to do resulted in Snyder being six feet under right now.

I don’t like that Vick fed family pets to the pit bulls and got enjoyment watching them be mauled to death.I don’t like that he PERSONALLY hung and drowned dogs for LOSING! What if he were held to that standard? I recall a 7-9 season under Vick his last year. I DO hope he has learned and that he will ask God to take over his life.

crabapplejoe, you are the dumbest person on the blog. You consistently make the dumbest statements. You can’t prove your post about the school system that is why you avoided the subject when you were called out on it. Also, who cares what color the DA was that made that statement about the Dan Heatley case, I will inform you of a very important fact, most African Americans do not depend on another African American to speak for or represent them. That was Paul Howard’s opinion of the case that does not mean that all other African American will agree with it just because Paul Howard is an African American, only an uniformed and complete idiot like yourself would make that assumption. Another thing, it does not matter how much alcohol Heatley had been drinking, the fact that he had alcohol in his system he should have been charged with a felony criminal offense. In domestic violence cases most of the time the victim wants to drop the charges but the state continues with the case. So, even though I can understand Snyder’s family wishes, Heatley should still be sitting in a prison because he recklessly and willingly drove that car while impaired and cause the death of another human being. Who’s to say that Heatley won’t do it again and kill someone else. You incarcerate a person to protect society from that individual. Heatley’s actions were more of a threat to my safety and the safety of everyone more than Vick’s. But crabapplejoe, you have showed your true colors a long time ago. So, I am sure you still won’t get it. You are a pathetic human being. I am sure you remember the exchanges we have had in the past. I destroyed you. It was like having a battle of wits with an unarmed man. You are clueless.

Vick Supporter, they still won’t get it. Great video, that was the realist I have seen anyone in the media talk about this situation. Deion, Marshall, Warren, and Jamie summed up most so called “Vick Supporters” feelings on the situation. Those who are against Vick are not angry because of what happened to dogs it is hatred for that man and what he represented. Vick was black, young and wealthy, his corn rolls were the fashion of the hip hop youth and he refused to lay down for them. They cursed the man and expected and hoped he would cry like a woman like Vince Young. Instead he stood up for himself and expressed himself. Now, that he is down they want to continue to kick him and finally have him to bow to them by saying, he need to show remorse, lets keep it real, you people want to degrade the man, and take his pride. This thing is bigger than Michael Vick. I have said it from the beginning, it’s bigger than him. Michael Vick represented some people hatred of what they equated as symbols of us. They would rather have Vick act like a female like Vince Young. They hate a strong black man because they are afraid of a strong black man.
“The Black man, before him there were none and after him there will be no more”.

Michael was (is?) an incredibly gifted athlete who just seems to be socially inept. I also think it’s safe to assume that he didn’t graduate anywhere near the top of his class. Yep, I personally think he’s probably a bit dumb, not “black dumb” or “white dumb”, but just “dumb dumb”. No one wants to call him out on any of these flaws for fear of being deemed a racist (which seems to be the classic retort for those opposed to the supposed “Vick haters”).
No one can possibly understand what’s gone on in his head. Why he is the way he is can probably be attributed to any number of things. Childhood expereriences, upbringing, family relationships, environment, the coddling he’s received from teachers and coaches, the adoration of long time friends and blood suckers. Quite simply, I believe that on field glory masked the off field flaws in this young man’s character.
Falcon’s coaches (yeah you…you punk Jim Mora), Arthur Blank (sucker punched by his then ownership weaknesses), teammates (all of you who knew what was going on), and diehard fans all contributed.
Had Michael swiftly admitted to fighting / killing dogs and simultaneously acknowledged his wrong doings / apologized to the entire world (which is an apparent necessity?), I sense NFL executives and media whores would have let him serve a 6 month sentence and do some sort of community service.
But Michael did what Michael has probably always done, he lied to everyone (including himself?). His NFL pimped popularity actually became the anchor which was used to drag him under. Lying to AB and to Roger Goodell (who HAS TO protect the shield) just fanned the flames. Goodell now seems to have his panties in such a wad, that God only know just exactly what he expects from Michael.
The house that everyone built for Michael was simply blown apart in the perfect storm of fame, fortune, and sadly for everyone involved, sheer stupidity.
My hope for Michael is he’s perhaps finally recognizing his skill on the field and his inabilities off it. I hope he seeks some counseling and looks to rebuild from the inside out. Sadly though, I don’t think he’ll find peace for many, many years.

Vick’s record as a starter for the Falcons
41-39-1 (not inpressive)
2002 9-6-1
2003 5-11
2004 11-5
2005 8-8
2006 7-9 *he finally starts all 16 games and gives us this*
By all means bring him back to the NFL. Gives other teams a better chance at winning. Come on people Vick as a player is no real threat to any team. May give a few highlite reels but that’s it. If he gets to come back that’s fine. But, he won’t lite up the score board or his teams winning persentage.

It is so funny how people judge each other like we haven’t did no wrong. People need to look at their own lives and their surrounding before they start saying what we should and shouldn’t do! Cause if the shoe was on the other foot you would want a second chance or your family member you would want someone to give them a second chance so why Vick cant have one….
Vick made a mistake dont get me wrong but to tear a MAN down to the lowest point is hrush and I bet most of these people on here is calling they self Christian or a Godly person but you turn your nose up to a person. That is not GOD at all. Like God said in his word He who is without SIN cast the first stone. ( Now ask yourself can I cast a stone) If we truly live by that then 99% of these comments wont even be on here. Its always funny to see how people react or turn their back against other people but they would want an second chances as well.
Mark Bradley comment that “Michael Vick needs to talk to us, and soon. He needs to tell us he’s sorry and that his time behind bars has changed him, made him wiser, redoubled his determination not to mess up the rest of his life. He needs now to throw himself on the mercy of the American public and see how merciful it can be.” Why do you feel that Vick need to do this and when does Sorry dont count for nothing anymore. How many time does this man have to say Sorry it dont matter if he mean it or not he said it, he did his time let it go! But people like you just keep throwing lighter fluid to the fire to help your rating. You could care less about Vick and you can tell in your story one minute you are for Vick but in the same breath you are still throwing him under the bus make up your mind either you are with him or not. So Vick keep your head up “MAKE YOUR HATERS YOUR MOTIVATORS” Then the sad things the World it self is full of Sinners and Wrong doers do we tell them that they owe us a Sorry NO!!!!….. They target Vick cause he had money is the bottom line for a fact cause right after that happen this guy got caught do the same things to dogs and cats and was worst but PETA wasn’t after him why cause he was a regular person and he was broke!!!! So to me they are not doing it cause they love animals they are doing because they want to be in the MEDIA spot light!!!

These people that are pointing out that hunting, horseracing, etc. are no worse than dogfighting are missing the point. It doesn’t matter if you think that Vick didn’t do anything morally worse than these other activities(which suspesiously are “white” activities), what he did was ILLEGAL. You think it’s a stupid law, or that hunting should be made illegal too? Fine. Contact your representatives. But don’t skirt the fact that Vick presumably knowingly(and if he didn’t know, ignorance is no defense) broke a law, lied to his employer and the authorities about it, and then was sentenced to a term within the sentencing guidelines. That is not a “mistake”. A mistake is a one-time occurrence. If you repeat the same actions over and over, then by definition it is not a mistake, it is a decision.
Vick has served his time in jail, and if he successfully completes the rest of his sentence without incident, he should be free to pursue whatever employment he can obtain. But make no mistake about it: the Falcons, the NFL, and its fans owe Vick NOTHING. If teams decide he is not worth the risk or the bad publicity, that doesn’t make them racist. That is their prerogative, society doesn’t owe anyone anything but a fair chance, which Vick had and blew.

Slavery – Mano? There isn’t a person alive today that does not have a slaveholding ancestor somewhere. Slavery has been acceptable throughout history- Isreal, Roman Empire, Parthis, Mongol, Chinese, Thai, Africa. It is still widely practiced on the African continent and in parts of Asia. American slavery is a nonstarter for me anyway, with my family emigrating from Sweden in 1882. So much energy on a football player. I hope he picks himself up. I hope he can pay off his creditors. I hope he picks better freinds and keeps the moochers from himself. Let’s not call what he did a mistake. Let’s call it what it was. A series of wrong decisions to conduct criminal acts and a criminal conspiracy. Good luck to him

“crabapplejoe, you are the dumbest person on the blog. You consistently make the dumbest statements. You can’t prove your post about the school system that is why you avoided the subject when you were called out on it. ”
BigEasy, I know you are a Vick supporter, and therefor very intellectually deficient, but here are the facts which show the reality of educational spending around the state:
Spending per pupil:
Nation: 9,099
State: 8,595
Atlanta: 12,188 (highest)
Cobb County: 7,922
Fayette County: 7,940
Forsyth County: 7,687
Students Per Teacher Ratio:
State: 14.3
Atlanta: 13.7 (lowest)
Cobb: 13.9
Forsyth: 14.9
Fayette: 14.2
Reading/English Language Arts Proficiency:
State: 87.1
Atlanta: 80.1 (Lowest – Shocking!)
Cobb: 89.5
Fayette: 95.4
Forsyth: 96.0
Math Proficiency:
State: 79.4
Atlanta: 70.6 (Lowest – Shocking!)
Cobb: 83.3
Fayette: 92.0
Forsyth: 93.4
Graduation Rate:
State: 72.3
Atlanta: 51.8 (Lowest again – Shocking!)
Cobb: 73.3
Fayette: 80.6
Forsyth: 74.0
So what these numbers irrfutabely prove is that spending per pupil is much higher then in Atlanta city schools, which are 85% black, then they are in the rest of the state, including the majority white districts by a very large margin. So this completely disproves the idiotic comment by a poster stating that education spending is being spent disproportianately in white districts over black districts due to racial motivations. The reality is the exact opposite.
Yet despite this much greater level of spending per pupil and lowest student/teacher, the Atlanta city schools consistently perform at attrocious levels in all areas (Reading/Math Proficiency and Graduation rates) that are much lower then the state average, and drastically lower then the natioinal average. Yet the districts with the lower spending per pupil and higher student/teacher ratio have much higher performances then the state or national average. Hmmmmmmm, wonder why that is? Just goes to show that personal desire and resposibility is the biggest factor in educational performance, not spending.
And here’s the source for you since you all are too lazy to look it up for yourselves:

What a load of horse manure!
People do not “HATE” a particular individual unless that person has mistreated others and put themselves above everyone else.
Can you guess why Michael Vick is now “HATED” but Walter Payton, Jackie Robinson and Hank Aaron are not?
The best way to get rid of your “HATERS” is to stop being a rude, obnoxious, selfish, law-breaking, self-absorbed PUNK and start having consideration for others besides yourself.

Hey What. You do not have to reinvent the wheel (Mike Vick’s record/Stats). There is a website called NFL.com it has all the information you need.
In his rookie season Mike Vick played in 8 games and started only two. You believe he is responsible for the result of 8 games that he did not play in?
Your parents must have been operating a meth lab when you were conceived. Logic and research are clearly not one of your strengths.
In 2004 Mike vick missed only one game. All these facts are available at NFL.com.
Nice Try. Better Luck next time.

Dogfighter, if you would notice I didn’t include Vick’s rookie season, which was 2001. My statement started with 2002 duffas.
I don’t need to look up any of Mike Vick’s stats because the only one that I notice with any team is wins and losses. His was 41-39-1. And you’re proud of that!! What a joke! But he ran for over a 1000 yards in a season. Big deal! Still 41-39-1.
Like I’ve said plenty of times, if Matt Ryan can’t lead this team to wins then get us another QB. I’m a Falcon fan 1st, pure and simple.

Mike you owe no-one anymore apology’s, you’ve already done that the best way you could before you went in prison for something people could really give a real crap about to begin with(check your local human society). Like Brett and Deion you’ve done your right of passage via the Falcons(in your case, playing behind the smallest Oline in the league) of which the 1st thing they strengthened once going back to a one dimensional QB was build up the size of the line that he’s handicapped to and the average fan can grasp. I don’t care which team you end up on you’re going to swear you’re in heaven and I’ve already bought my tape for the show that we are going to get when you(behind an at least average sized line) play the Falcons. If people didn’t see the “Remorse” that they are seeking from you already, they aren’t looking for it. The Creator is the only entity that you have left to impress. Go Mike and do your thing as only you can, “New and Improved”.
