He’s not quite free and clear, but he’s out of prison. That’s a start. Michael Vick can begin to get on with the rest of his life, and we should wish him well. Because he’s not some demon. He’s a human being who made dire mistakes.
And he continues to pay for them. He’ll wear an ankle bracelet. He can’t go to a bar. He can’t vote. He’ll need to earn his way back into the good graces of Roger Goodell and the American public, and it won’t be easy. But there’s a story waiting to be written, a story as uplifting as these past two years have been deflating.
Michael Vick needs to talk to us, and soon. He needs to tell us he’s sorry and that his time behind bars has changed him, made him wiser, redoubled his determination not to mess up the rest of his life. He needs now to throw himself on the mercy of the American public and see how merciful it can be.
Because a lot of people would be willing to forgive him. (Not to forget, but to forgive.) I know. I’m among them. But he has to ask.
Understand: Vick wasn’t a victim of runaway justice. He admitted his crimes and has paid a price almost beyond measure. But his life isn’t over, and so long as life remains there’s the possibility of redemption. He’s 28. He has time. He can change our perception yet again.
Sorry, there are no polls available at the moment. He deserves the chance to play football. PETA will protest, but PETA is famous for overplaying its hand. (Have Vick submit to a brain scan? Who’s writing this stuff – Joe McCarthy? Arthur C. Clarke?) If he finds an owner willing to absorb the backlash, he can make us remember why it was we came to notice Michael Vick. Contrary to revisionist history, he’s not a bad quarterback. Three Pro Bowls, as I recall.
He won’t be playing here, and that’s for the best. He needs a restart, and the Falcons have a different quarterback. But that doesn’t mean we can excise his name from team annals. Vick rekindled the flame when this franchise had gone cold. He made us care. That’s why it hurt so deeply to see him fail.
And it wasn’t Vick the player who failed. It was Vick the person, Vick the stealth dogfighter, the Vick nobody around here saw. (You say you knew he was a bad guy all along? On what evidence? The water bottle? Please.) His failure loosed a deluge of racial back-and-forth that missed the point, for this was never about a demographic profile. This was about one man and his misdeeds, one man who owned a city but went to jail.
And now he’s out. And now he can move forward, and so can we. Amid all the motion, here’s a hope that he gets it right from now on, so right that in five years we’ll see Michael Vick not as a fallen idol but as an indomitable soul who triumphed over abject disgrace.
Yes, he did wrong. But after all that has transpired, Michael Dwayne Vick has it within him to do right. I’ve been disappointed in him, but I’m not yet ready to give up. Not on this one. There’s a heart in there somewhere, a good heart. I believed as much on that sorrowful day he entered his plea, and I believe it still.

where’s Ted Striker?
truthfully, we may get an apology or we may not, but methinks it will be robotically read (once again) straight from the page, word-for-word, without any eye contact, and won’t exactly warm the hearts of all those who want him to succeed. It won’t be “real.”
Truth is, I just don’t think the man has a lot upstairs. He’s gonna allow himself to be manipulated and controlled by anyone hired to pull himself up and out of the fire. He’ll just be focused on getting those dollars rolling in again, and will say absolutely anything to facilitate that…
His only problem? Goodell is not a moron, and will quickly see what’s up…

After a year + of extensive research and psychoanalyzing the subject (Mr. Vick), scientists now have emprical data to come to the irrefutable conclusion that at least 6 known breeds of dogs have a greater learning capability and intelligence quotient then Mike Vick.

Nat, would you like to take a guess at which owner will pay Mike Vick for his services to his organization? Which city wants him to play for them? To be the face of their organization? Because he will become a face of that organization. And you know what? So will PETA protesters and every other animal rights organization out there and others who feel he hasn’t paid his debt. It is my opinion that he does not deserve the right to play in the NFL. But not a single NFL will be calling to ask me that question He was given that opportunity already and has shown that he cannot handle it responsibly. He has a right to work anywhere that will hire him, the NFL, MLB, NBA, PETCO, etc. That’s a given and easy to understand. BTW, I am not a PETA member or anything. I truly belive that if God didn’t want us to eat cows he wouldn’t have made them taste like steaks.

Bradley,
I understand the AJC has to carry this story, but will their ever be a Falcon AJC Page free of Michael Vick? Once he goes to another team as the sports editor you have to consider that, right?

Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy the naivete of the people in this country. Let me hook you folks on to one simple fact; Roger Goddell is not going to make a decision about Vick’s return to the NFL. Roger Goddell has already made a decision about Vick’s return to the NFL and he will allow him back in.
First of all, Mike Vick was not the only player in the NFL involved in dogfighting and Goddell knows it. This is not my opinion but something players in the NFL have stated themselves when this first happened. Jay Feeley former kicker with the Falcons said so on ESPN. Ronde Barber said the same thing to Peter King in an article that appeared in Sports Illustrated. SI also reported in that love feast article on the rehab of the dogs, that all the dogs on Vick’s property DID NOT belong to him and that his boys were doing some caretaking of dogs for other individuals.
In addition, if you go back and ACTUALLY READ some information on this case you would find out that in Tony Taylor’s statement of facts he describes a dogfight that occurred on Vick’s property that was between two dogs that did not belong to Vick, but, instead two other “unnamed individuals”. I seriously doubt if Vick is allowing any average Joe to bring their dogs to fight on his property. And if they were average Joes then why has the government failed to release the names of these individuals or indict them for the EXACT SAME CRIMES Vick admitted to doing.
All of this pie in the sky nonesense that Goddell is spewing out is nothing but political nonspeak. The man is a politician in the mold of his RINO dad. And even Bill Clinton cannot touch his innocent “who me” act. In one breath he talks about waiting until Vicks time is up and yet we found out he has discussed Vick with Tony Dungy. And I’m sorry I don’t believe that the national PRESIDENT of the Humane Society visited Vick in prison at Vick’s request as his NFLPA paid lawyer (Billy Martin) said on yesterday.
The race is on for the NFL to rehabilitate Vick’s image and put him back on the field so he can make them money. Afterall they know that if the people in this country will pay a buck for bottled water or elect a novice to the presidency then you can sell them anything.

Vick Supporter,
Do you work for the computer networking co. or the cooking oil maker? I was just curious. Anyway, you speak of racial hatred but that’s a 2 way street and I think you need to take a deep, long look in the mirror.
It seems that you and a lot of other black supporters seem to want to support Vick so passionately due simply to the fact that he is black. You keep bringing up this nonsense about him being “disrespected”. I am so sick of that over used “disrespected” term. Its the same term that people in the hood use to gun each other down. Someone “disrespected” someone so let’s go shoot them.
You think Vick was, is, and always will be the entire Falcons franchise. I got news for ya buddy. There is a new sheriff in town, his name is Matt Ryan, and he led the falcons from what was predicted to be a 1 win team by Bradley or some other AJC columnist to a playoff team. Forget Vick, he is the past. Get on board with Ryan and the new Falcons. Or will your own racial hatred blind you into not supporting Ryan? It sounds like it will unfortunately.
Personally, I forgive Vick and I think he has paid his debt to society. Let’s wish him well and let him move on with his life. I really do hope he does well. Unfortunately, I think he is a narcissistic man of very poor character. I don’t think it will be long before he manages to self destruct and ruin a 2nd chance all over again. I really think this is why people dislike him. I sense that most people know think that he hasn’t learned his lesson, that he is still just a bad person, and that its just a matter of time before he screws up again. That’s what I think will happen. I just really hope that I’m wrong.

This man has apologized, what more do you want! I just want to wish Mike the best and i’m one of his bigest fan!!I really glad he’s out of jail and I know God has something good instore for him and i know PETA and the rest of those hater can’t keep him down so go find somebody else to bother!! You idiots kill me with your comments. People go out and kill animals for sport and PETA isn’t knocking down their doors. People dont go to Mississippi and Louisiana and protest the cockfights. This is a simple case of a celebrity doing something stupid and overpaying for it while being a made an example for everyone. From the judge to the arresting officers, to the media outlets. People make their careers off of moments like this. People wanting to jump in on history being made. “The downfall of Mr. Vick”. Nobody cares about the other shameless acts of NFL players drunkdriving and killing people in the process. Go protest that. Or beating their wives and drug usage. People send down judgement like they have that power. My friends boss hates Michael Vicks guts because of what he did. But the man goes around killing cats on his property with hammers. See the irony. He did his time, get off his back. What you dipsticks forget is that the NFL is a business!!! Meaning mulah, confetti, green, dollars, cha-ching!!! He was the best, most exciting player in the league, hate it or love it. The year he went down, the Falcons were scheduled for how many Monday Night Football games? Think about that!! Idiot Goodell knows that he has to give that man a chance. Their is too much money at stake. Money talks, and you idiots cursing and throwing tantrums like little kids need to worry about your own lives and families. Haters get your hate on!!! While my main man VICK will return and do his thing just like MJ did in ‘96. Im laughing at you all. I cant wait to buy his jersey and I dare somebody to comment…hahahahahahahahahahaaa…I CAN WAIT!!!

Jamir1, It should be what happened to forgive and forget? Not what happen to forgive and forget.
In your third sentence it should be haters, not hater.
Attached should be attacked
bigest should be biggest and it should be you are one of his biggest fans. Not that you are one of his biggest fan
It should be PETA and the rest of those haters as in plural rather than hater.
But don’t worry, I’m able to decipher through the language of ebonics and actually understand some of this.

Atlanta is stilla highly volitale city, rooted with RACISM.The divide is still Black/White. It was that way long before Michael Vick was drafted and will be that way long after Matt Ryan plays his last game.
this country was built on teh basis of RACISM; the south, especially Atlanta, has been a focal point of the racial divide. The racist will never publically forgive.

Mike Vick…I don’t know about the rest of you guys but on a purely selfish note…I really hope he wont end up on the Saints or Panthers!!That would be ugly..You know I have to say the guy did his time so what is the big friggin deal.PETA?Whatever…I don’t see these people on TV boycotting and protesting Horse racing, dog racing greyhounds or huskies.Be that as it may stuff like this always makes me feel kind of conflicted.1st is you try to to teach your kids to do the right thing..because breaking the law is wrong,,,forget the moral side what about …you can go to jail? That’s nothing to aspire to is it?On the other hand boy…life slaps us in the face daily with the hypocrisy that is the AMERICAN way.The country that champions LIBERTY and FREEDOM for all mankind happens to be the last country to outlaw slavery..while we were going to war in Korea and Vietnam to promote freedom we still had a segregated south. We have vehemently opposed most other countries acquiring nuclear weapons yet WE are the only country to ever actually use one and we did it twice,we espouse the virtues of live a clean life, don’t do drugs etc yet the last 3 presidents we elected admitted to using cocaine and or marijuana!!It goes on and on…Jesus Christ said “He who among you that is without sin,let him cast the first stone”Which incidentally tells me that even in those times people loved judging others and actually took pleasure in other people’s misfortunes. So good luck Mike Vick..wish you the best I just hope we don’t have to see this guy twice a year.

Being a dog owner, I am very protective and loving of my pooch. But I won’t make the MISTAKE of equating the life of a dog to that of a human being. I’m gonna be totally honest here…. When this whole thing went down, I was crushed. No matter what people say, white or black, Vick was Atlanta..Vick was the ENTIRE FRANCHISE. We all cheered him..with him naturally receiving more scrutiny from whites, unfortunately. I have hated the Falcons since then. Not Mr.Blank or the team itself caused this hate, but the fans themselves caused it. I understand fans being upset about his crime, but to bring all of the racial hatred that has plagued this city out in the open and for “certain fans” to say that Vick never did anything positive on the field for this team and say that he’s the worst qb ever really pissed me off. I got to thinking….these people really don’t look at the big picture and just look at completion %s and qb ratings instead of WINS. He has a winning record as a starter and I thought that counted for something…I guess winning only counts for Ryan, lol, not Vick, the man who put atlanta on the map for real. That’s why I hate the falcons…and many people feel the same way as I do. I’m not saying that Vick was the perfect qb, but he played hard for this city and it wasn’t appreciated by “certain fans” here. I do know one thing, Ryan will never win this city over. ATL will always be Vick’s city, and the Falcons will always be Vick’s team, even when he comes here with his new team. The city of Atlanta loves you, Mike Vick, and you’ll receive your 2nd chance. It will be a comeback like never before and Falcons section of the AJC will always be about The Great Mike Vick. Redemption Time is Here.

For all you idiots bringing up the Danny Heatley “DUI”….he was never charged with “DUI”. He was simply driving too fast on Lennox Road and lost control. The man riding with him who died was his best friend. Snyder’s family did not want Heatley to serve time. Here is a quote from our (black) District Attorney:
“This was a traffic-related incident. It was not an intentional incident,” said Howard, adding Heatley and Snyder’s friendship was a factor in the handling of the case.
Killing defenseless dogs is an intentional act, not an accident. There be a difference.

Dude, get with clue…do you really think that the Fulton County School Board, that is controlled by blacks, would spend less in South Fulton than North Fulton. Do your own research. By the way the City of Atlanta and Washington D.C. spend a great deal more per student than North Dakota and Oregon, etc. but the results are not quite the same…sorry, but I’m just keepin’ it real…know what I mean?
