Dear readers:
I plan to speak with Hawks general manager Rick Sund tomorrow morning. (He’s a fine fellow, by the way, and a great conversationalist. Not that you asked. But I thought I’d throw that in.) And I kind of know what I want to ask: What’s he going to do this offseason? Keep Bibby? Keep Marvin? Trade for Kobe?
But I’m only one person, and a flawed one at that, and I might miss something. So I’m asking for your help. If you have a question for Mr. Sund, please submit it below. I’m not promising I’ll get around to all of them, but I’ll try to work in a few. So have at it, and please keep them clean.
Thanks in advance.

Are you still comfortable with the size of our frontline, especially considering how they were dominated by a huge front line against Cleveland. How long will we play Horford out of position, when he might bring a more dominant defensive center in a trade? Or would you consider moving him to Power Forward and trading either Josh or Marvin?

Not sure how to phrase this to get a honest answer, but with no head coaching change coming – is there a chance we’ll follow the Cavs lead with Mike Brown and see an offensive or defensive guru brought in to help Coach Woodson.

if tashun prince is available will the hawks try to move for him(trade marvin maybe) or try to move up in the draft for a younger point guard( you could trade a.c. law for crittion(former ga tech point guard in memphis) neither player is gettting much playing time and both where first round picks but he might be more of what coach is looking for a scoring point guard.

2nd question is after seeing the Hawks get outmanned in the playoffs on the post play and on the boards, Do you see a need in drafting, or trading for a true Center? I truely believe Josh Smith played better than our Captain in the playoffs and he needs some help. I love Horford he just didn’t go hard in the playoffs.

I have a few ideas for the hawks roster.
1. Trade Joe Johnson, Craig claxton, A.C. Law, and Randolph Morris to the Suns for Shaquille O’Neal and a 2nd rounder or 2
2. Sign Allen Iverson
3. Sign Jason kidd (he would come here if we have Shaq)
4. draft ty lawson (he will be around when we draft)
5. resign ZAZA
then your starting five would be.
Kidd
Iverson
Josh smith
Al horford
Shaq
I think this would be a great team, Plus with Shaq you can get veteran free agents on the cheap look at miami in 2006 and the Lakers in 2004. Players want to play with Shaq.

I would like to ask Rick Sund how pleased he was with our offensive production and (if Woodson is retained)could we possibly get an “offensive coordinator” (in the same vein as a Tex Winters) that would create more motion in our half court sets. Contrary to many of the complaints of my peers, I felt our biggest issue wasn’t the size of our front court, but it was the stretches during both the Miami and Cav’s series where we’d go 3-5 minutes with out a field goal. In my estimation that took us out of several of the games because teams make runs. If you can’t score to keep the game close, it doesn’t matter how tall your front court is. We can create several mismatches with our existing roster. However, our offense seems to be stagnant for long periods of time.

NBA history is filled with examples of teams where the coach who built and cajoled young players into being a cohesive, competitive group isn’t the right coach to take the next step: Think Doug Collins and then Phil Jackson with the Bulls. Are the Hawks at that point yet? If not, when?

Just to give those reading the blog an update, Sund was on 790 the Zone this morning and here’s the highlights:
Mike Woodson will be back. Definitively.
-He has a ranking system of every player in the NBA. I love this part of his philosophy.
-He liked what he saw out of Acie through 2 months. Doesn’t sound like he wants to give up on him but doesn’t think he’s a starter at this point.
-Calls Josh Smith a combo of Ben Wallace and Scottie Pippen.
-Addressed Childress situation: He’s willing to talk to Josh about coming back. Called him another chip or moving piece in the total puzzle.

If the Hawks can resign Bibby for a resonsible price, have you considered moving him to the 2 position, moving JJ to the 3 position, and trading Marvin for a quality PG? Sessions (Bucs PG) is a FA. Westbrook would be a great trade also!
Second question – Josh Smith is a beast, but he is a tweener. He does not shoot well from outside to play the 3 position and he struggles on defense against bigger PF. Have you considered trading Josh Smith for a starting 5 man or trading up to draft Thabeet, resigning Zaza, and moving Horford to the 4 position?
Thanks Mark!

Rick, since Coach Woodson appears to be on board for the duration of his contract, can you tell what needs to be done to make this team competitive on the road? They are a totally different team on the road, they don’t just lose, they get mauled by anybody. How do you get the team that plays at HOME to play like that on the ROAD? I believe the Coach makes a difference on the ROAD, we will have same Coach, so what difference can you make in player acquisitions? Also, after the playoffs the players stated that Cleveland showed them how to prepare for playoff basketball, this is the same thing they said last year from the Boston playoff series…would this be acceptable next year or is it what it is, a convienient excuse?

Ask Sund if his building of the team (particularly this summer) will be predicated on running Woody’s offensive ’system’ (e.g., isos) during the 2009/2010 campaign and beyond, or will he attempt to assemble personnel based upon more use of dribble penetration & kick and pick & roll, pick & pop, and continuously running shooters off a series of picks to clear them for open looks.

Mr. Sund,
Can you talk about your decision to retain Woodson as head coach?
It seems that he doesn’t adapt his coaching style to fit his personnel. His mundane, “Iso Joe” offense is just painful to watch and extremely ineffective. Shouldn’t we be playing a more uptempo style? Shouldn’t we HAVE a style? How about a simple Pick & Roll every now and then?

What type of “team personality” are you trying to create? For instance, the old Detroit Pistons were known as “bad boys” and the Los Angeles Lakers were known as “showtime”. The Hawks, while good and young, do not have a “team personality” nor anyone on the team who leads or defines them. I am an avid Hawks fan. Defining the “team personality” will go a long way in acquiring, developing and evolving the personnel to bring a championship to Atlanta.

Also, let’s get Marcus Camby for 2 years, move Josh Smith to the 3. Joe Johnson has good trade value. He is not worth another big contract. He has no swag. He fits in and a superstar needs to take over in the playoffs. Starting lineup: Camby, Hortford, Smith, Childress and Marbury. The bench would be okay as is… thanks for your consideration.,

Trade Marvin Williams or Josh Smith alone with Acie Law and the rights to Childress to the raptors for Bosh and one of there 3 point shooters. Cut all ties with Claxton and use his money to resign Bibby, ZaZa, Murray. Don’t forget to give Joe his money. If you follow this plan Joe will befresh come playoff time, because he won’t have to carry the Hawks the whole season and he won’t get double team as much. Starting 5 will be Bosh, Horford, Smith or Williams, Johnson and Bibby. ZaZa, Evans, Murray coming of the bench. This will make the Hawks one of the top 4 teams in the league. Hawks will be true contenders for the NBA for the next few yrs.

This team is one of the more entertaining teams we’ve ever had. With Joe Johnson’s all-around scoring ability, Smith’s high-flying dunks, ZaZa’s blue collar style, and Bibby’s markmanship!! HOWEVER, it’s all for nothing unless we get a BIG MAN….a legit BIG MAN. This team would have been no better (in the playoffs) with Childress or a healthy Marvin. Those pieces wouldn’t have mattered a bit. Every team remaining has at least one solid 5-man, and some have 2 or 3…we have none. If what I’m saying is true, and has been true for the last….well….forever, what are we finally gonna do about it????

I believe it is important not to get involve in name recognition. Jason kidd is a leader but to old. Stephon is old too. He is ok at this point in his career. We need a difference maker at the point guard position. How about trading Marvin Williams and Acie Law to move up in the draft and select Johnnie Flynn? Can we have some better assistant coaches to help Mike Woodson? It is important for a coach to be a motivator along with finding a way to tap into a players potential.

It’s time to face the facts Joe Johnson is the teams best player but Josh Smith is the star of the team…….he won’t listen to Woody and most of the team except for Joe and Bibby seem too.
ASG always say they can spend money on this team then start by paying for a better coach. (Woody has taken this team as far as he can)
Remember the Bulls didn’t get to the Championship with Collins they got there with Phil Jackson.

Mr. Sund does the future goals the ASG have for the Hawks franchise align with the coaching philosophy of Mike Woodson. In addition, what does he feel are coach Woodson’s greatest assets in terms of reaching those goals?
I would also ask what he thought coach Woodson weaknesses are too in term of reaching those goals…but I do not think you would get much of a response.

I see a dual line of thinking regarding Bibby. First, when he’s on, he drives the offense tremendously. However, he can’t defend any player that has a quick first step and with no true center…. well, we saw how many uncontested dunks & layups we gave up. Thusly, since I don’t see resigning Bibby (at the $$ he’d command) AND adding a true center, what is the stradegy regarding the 1 & 5 spots as a tandum?

Mr. Sund,
You had a French-born player named Mickeal Gelabale play for you in Seattle two years ago. Did you discover and bring him to the States? Also, have you considered bringing him in as a free agent? He’s a good athlete and could learn well under Joe Johnson (Same size and skill set).

Please get the offensive coordinator question answered. This team is holding itself back and doing harm to Joe Johnson by running so much Iso-Joe offense. We don’t even run pick and rolls with one of the top pick and roll point guards in the game. Something has to change or we will be right back here next complaining about another inconsistent post-season (inconsistent because Iso-Joe offense cannot succeed consistently).

It seems that most top teams in the NBA have a guard with the speed and quickness to drive, dish, and/or pull up for a jumper that the defense have to respect. Bibby is a great leader and a good shooter, but he doesn’t really have these attributes. Will the hawks look at other point guards thru free agency or trades to acquire a guard with this type of quickness to take some of the pressure off of Joe Johnson and to break down the defense to dish to the open guy?

Rick Sund you said you like Acie Law when you arrived in Atlanta. How come he does not get regular minutes in the 2nd unit. I would have to throw Solo in that question as well, why has he not been developed after all these years? I think Solo can be just as good as Varejo and Camby if given minutes.

I’m guessing that Sund watches the team during practice. So if he thinks that Acie looks like Devin Harris or Solo looks like Camby, then he would have likely said something to Woody. Any chance that Acie looks like an oft-injured non-shooter at practice and Solo looks like a tall project in need of more fundamental development?
Said differently, ask Sund, “If during team practices, you saw an infrequently used player looking like he could contribute in game-time situations, but was not being given playing time, how would you handle that situation”?

Sund: My questions are similar to most Hawk Fans. Rumors are already flying about a sign and trade for Marvin and shopping Acie. I thought Marvin did very well before his injury he really improved his jump shot and drove to the basket. He really came through when Joe was down. If we trade him what scorer is out there that can open up the offense and limit JJ double teams. JJ has to play less minutes during regular season. I would like a center, Al does a great job and his youth helps him with some of the slower big guys, but he is getting beat up down there in the post and I think may contribute to more injury and anyone saying what Al did’nt do in the playoffs needs to play the Cav’s on a bad ankle. That kid has heart and a high basketball IQ. I would like an offensive coordinator, that may can get Woody to draw more plays for other players and have a true point guard, Mike can run the floor but he is more of a shooting guard now.
Questions:
Can we realistically improve our offensive through trade and at what cost?
Are we resigning Flip? He was great all season and deserves another chance.
Do you think wihtout injury if Acie is given a fair chance he can be productive or do you think there are some interestings prospects in the draft that may fall to the Hawks?
Josh Smith is a game changer and I think he is maturing do you think someone can work with him to get make him a more productive shooter from inside the 3 point line. If he can be consistant that will cause teams to have to watch him in the post and the outside opening up the offensive. What about SOLO? I think he is better then we think. Can we go to a rotation of more then 7 or 8 to get more production out of our bench in the regular season.
What about ZaZa?

When will Flip Murray get promoted to the starting lineup? He has earned a starting position after saving the Hawks from an embarrasement in the Heat series. Had the Hawks not had the services of Flip Murray in the Heat series, the Hawks would have certainly lost that series. Flip Murray, in my opinion, was the MVP of the Heat series. Zsa Zsa Pachulia was key in the Heat series as well. Zsa Zsa gave the Hawks an incredible lift in that series completely neutralizing Dwayne Wade. Both Zsa Zsa and Flip have earned more minutes for next season.

Why can’t the organization come out and say that we our restricted with the money the team can spend? Please don’t expect much.
Actions speak louder than words. This organization is constantly in spin mode and does a great injustice to the fans of this team.
Don’t tell me how you spent money on J. Smith when it took forever to sign him. It took an offer from another team before he was signed.
Let only the Hawks are never in the hunt for all star players either via trade or free agency. When Stoudamire was on the block by Phoenix this all star break where were the Hawks? No where to be found according to media reports. Except for the fact the Hawks didn’t want to take on his salary. Who needs a young stud center not the Hawks.
The fact you don’t or won’t get a better a coach, because we have one that will coach for peanuts. Not to mention if you got a new coach we would have to pay two salaries. Woodson has taken the team as far as it can go, everyone can see this. The natural progression of these players has led it to a better record each year. The sad fact is with coaching the team could be even better.
It’s frustrating being a Hawk fan knowing the team isn’t doing everything it can to be an elite team. I do appreciate the fact you are answering our questions, I just hope we don’t here team speak when you do answer.
I’d respect you more if you came clean and just said “My hands are tied, I can’t spend the money I want to improve the team. I will try to do the best I can with the limitations ownership puts on me.” This way I know not to expect much and not to get my hopes up. Thanks for the time.

I believe there is one guy who can really help the Hawks. His salary is real high though, but he would impose a series problem for opposing teams to get into the paint. In the Cavs series, the Hawks were unable to block the painted area from being driven through by Mo Williams, DeLante West and King James. Those guys continued to relentlessly drive through the paint and score at will. I realize that Horford was not 100% but even if Horford was available more in the Cavs series I think those three guys would have still gotten inside the paint. I do believe if the Hawks were to go out and sign Shaquille O’Neal, no one will get into the painted area ever again. Signing Shaq would be like building a brick wall as strong as fort knox which would completely block the paint. The only way to get through the paint with Shaq standing there is to drive a bulldozer through. When Shaq guarded the paint in Los Angeles for the Lakers, he was awarded with three world championship rings. Shaq can help the Hawks climb to the top of the mountain and leap over it.

The Hawks are finally watchable after some 20 years, so please have him move Josh Smith’s game in closer to the basket. Watching him miss the whole freaking goal (a pro) in the playoff was painful! I can think of two players who I believe would make an enormous impact to the Hawks. Furthermore, I believe bringing in BOTH of these guys would just about guarantee the Hawks winning the NBA championship next season. Amare Stoudemore and Antonio McDyess are the two gentlemen who I think would make the Hawks an elite team (on the level with Orlando, Boston, Cleveland, and Lakers). We would have also develop our point guards (veteran Mike Bibby and Acie Law) and would need to dramatically improve. Hopefully Bibby can regain his form that he had in Sacramento. With a substantial improvement at the point coupled with bringing in Stoudemire and MyDyess, the sky would be the limit for the Hawks in the future.

A lot of very good questions from everybody, but I get the strange feeling NOTHING good is going to come this organizations way until this
owners mess gets resloved. They can’t fire Woodson now because none of the coaches that this team needs will put themselves in an “unstable” (to say the least) situation. The same can be said for any of the top FA as well. I don’t think Bibby will be re-signed, I don’t think the Hawks will match any decent offer he gets in free agency market(and he will get a couple). The only hope of getting any quality players will have to come thru draft/trade. Any agent worth his salt knows about the instability that this organization is in (thats why they could only hire Sund). It’s no secret they are loosing money.

What I would ask is to what extent management is going to encourage mentorship of the younger players this summer. I mean, Josh Smith has worked on his game with Hakeem Olijawon. Has there been any thought to bringing a James Worthy in to work with Marvin Williams, a Vinny Johnson to work with Mario West, getting Za Za signed soon enough so that he can help get Solo ready for next season, if indeed either player is a piece of Sund’s long term puzzle. Not to mention Acie Law IV. I’d just like to see a lot more mentorship of the younger player. My question is, will it happen?

Mark, thanks for asking about our questions. Excellent way to pile up hit stats and readership.
Does being linked to the Thrashers cause a negative impact on the Hawks?
What can be done about freeing up some capital for getting a consistent big man while still keeping Joe and Marvin? Is Bibby really worth a big contract when his age and limited defensive skills are factored into the equation? I think getting Felton from Charlotte makes sense.
Thanks in advance Mr. Sund.

Great questions! In a nut shell, the question everybody wants to know is? Mr. Sund, what is your overall vision for this team? How do you plan to improve this team? The you start breaking down the nitty gritty. Point guard issue, desperate need for a center, Marvin and Acie questions. Truth is, we all know Sund will not be able to answer most of those questions in details. Al least not ones concerning specific players. Some questons, though, I can answer for fans.
Ron attest said he wans to re-sign with Houston, and Houston said they want him back. So rest that case.
Danny Granger just signed an extension with the Pacers. He ain’t going nowhere.
Shak is too old.
Mark Bradley, some coaches go nine deep. Cleveland went 10 deep versus Hawks in the playoffs. Lakers can go ten deep. Denver can go ten deep. Houston, if not injured can go ten deep. Portland too. Coaches go 9-10 deep when they have an effective bench. In games 3 and 4, second quarter, Hawks had the lead, Woodson threw a few bench players in there. Cleveland went in with a completely different 5 man rotation, and they promptly erased the deficit and took the lead, with LeBron on the pine. And that was all she wrote.

1. If you choose to keep Woodson, would you make him play more of his bench like he said he would on separate occasions throughout the season?
2. How interested would you be if Avery Johnson was interested in coming to the Hawks for the ‘09-’10 season?
3. Looking at the Rockets-Lakers series, the Rockets were undermanned. Same as the Hawks. They took the Lakers 7 games without 2 all-stars (McGrady, MIng) and doing it with a 2nd year PG. Rick Adelman had his team prepared regardless who’s injured or not. Woodson on the other hand was so unprepared that we had to play an injured Marvin and Horford whom would have been out for close to a month if it were the regular season. Will we see changes with his coaching when it comes to developing his players and having them ready to step up when the time is necessary?

Why has Acie Law not been given a chance to develop? Acie needs to play and be allowed to make mistakes (he is not Mike Bibby)he is a different type of player that needs to push, penetrate, finish (like Tony Parker) Why is Joe Johnson minutes played at or near of the NBA? Why can’t Josh Smith as talented as he is, understand what is a good or bad shot at this point is his career? Josh needs to look in the mirror and understand one simple thing, talent alone is not good enough, you must play smart. Why has Marvin not been more involved in the offensive game plan? Why are we not a running team? We have young legs we should run like the Lakers of the 80’s catching the ball out of the net and pushing.
I am so afraid that we will trade Acie Law and he will become everything that we expected and more because he just got a chance to play. Woody needs to trust the bench more and play them.

i say the hawks get ben gordon. he’s better than joe. joe has been fun to watch but it’s time for him to go he’s not as versatile a gordon and can’t hit big shots when we need him to. this would be the best thing to do in the off season. also resign flip to a 2 year deal and get johnny flynn in the draft

I’m not sure how much Knight consulted his coach regarding personnel moves. How much input do you think the coach should have in your decision-making re: draft/trade priorities and re: specific players?
Also: even the Woody supporters among us (I’m one of them) were frustrated to see Acie sit most of the year, only to brought on in desperation during the playoffs. You keep wondering, not how the second round might have gone, but how Acie’s development might have gone. On the other hand, Woody was between a rock & a hard place–needing to develop Acie versus playing Bibby–the one guy who proved he could make the offense go and could score with some consistency. Are you happy with Woody’s efforts this past year to balance those two things? And are your expectations different for the coming year?

The lottery sucks. I feel bad for Sacramento. They should do away with the lottery and just base picks on wins/losses. The lottery is a sham. The Kings should have had the first pick. The NBA ain’t got nothing on the NFL when it comes to the draft. Bottom line the NBA should rethink the lottery. What a bunch of bull!

Mark, another fun session on your blog. I have been moving and flying up and down the eastern seaboard the last few weeks so I haven’t had a chance to comment until now.
I have been following the Hawks since Lou Hudson in the early ’70s. Not important to the conversation but I had to say it. Ask Mr. Sund, “… wholesale changes to the roster is not in the cards considering the age of the team (3rd youngest in the NBA and with 47 wins). Do you think we need to get bigger on the frontline or improve our defensive liabilities in the backcourt (point guard)? Or does he feel that he can do both this off season?

How does the organization make sure that Joe gets some much needed rest this summer. He is a completely different player than he was when he arrived in Atlanta because of the insane amount of minutes he has played.

Would you consider trading Josh Smith? He is a descent player but I think the experiment is over. We need to see more consistency with his play on offense. Can we also shop around Marvin Williams as well? Please sign Flip Murray, Maurice Evans, and Zaza but definitely trade or release Speedy, AC, Mario West, and Randolph Morris. Is that a consideration? Let’s go after Rasheed Wallace and Drew Gooden. Don’t you think we need a few veteran front court players?

I’m an avid Hawks Fan.. I din’t miss a game the entire season and I have a couple of questions; 1) What are you going to do about bringing a true center in someone who can dominate the glass and give you big shot blocking capability? 2) Our point guard situation. I love Mike Bibby but he is overpaid at 15 million a year when you compare him to other point guards in the league..Do you release him via free agency or try to resign him to a lesser contract? If you release him what are your ideas in who you go after? If you release him you have to bring a big time point guard in. I think you need to resign Joe Johnson and maybe trade Marvin Williams if you can get something huge in return like a true center! I really hope you answer my question. I’m tired of being ignored.

OK, folks. Interview with Rick Sund is finished. It lasted more than 90 minutes. (I told you he’s a great conversationalist.)
I’m going to put up a Q&A pretty soon, and some of you — advance warning — will be disappointed in the lack of specifics. But Rick wasn’t going to discuss specific free agents or draft targets — no GM would. But you’ll note that many of your questions were indeed addressed: Is Horford a center? Do the Hawks have an identity? Is Sund happy with Woodson? Do the Hawks need an offensive (or defensive) coordinator? And does this GM believe that it’s possible to win a championship without a superstar?
Give me a couple of hours. And again, thanks for all the submissions. This was kind of a test exercise, and I’m mightily pleased with the results.

no dont do that that is the dumbest move you can ever have. this is obviously not a real hawks fan but one of the bandwagon jumpers. dont listen to bandwagon jumpers, they are the reason joe johnson was traded from the celtics and the deal with the suns who by the way both teams have openly regreted the transactions. no starter should leave just load up the bench obvoiously there are too many bench warmers. let speedy go because even he himself said that he doesnt see himself playing with the hawks. id rather see the team sign another mario west for cheap than pay speedy on the bench and get no production off of him no matter how many injuries the team has. im for keepin JJ and the Starters because the hawks bench has at some points been the lowest scoring benches. say thy moved up 2-3 spots then maybe we have a 50 win team.i agree that solo can go but not before othello and morris. acie is still learning. so keep him.
on the other hand the bench might not even be the problem this offseason yes we need some pieces but on piece we cannot return is having starters play 40 minute games.
