Audience-participation time! Submit questions for Rick Sund!

Dear readers:

I plan to speak with Hawks general manager Rick Sund tomorrow morning. (He’s a fine fellow, by the way, and a great conversationalist. Not that you asked. But I thought I’d throw that in.) And I kind of know what I want to ask: What’s he going to do this offseason? Keep Bibby? Keep Marvin? Trade for Kobe?

But I’m only one person, and a flawed one at that, and I might miss something. So I’m asking for your help. If you have a question for Mr. Sund, please submit it below. I’m not promising I’ll get around to all of them, but I’ll try to work in a few. So have at it, and please keep them clean.

Thanks in advance.

Are you planning on extending Joe Johnson’s contract this summer?

Are you still comfortable with the size of our frontline, especially considering how they were dominated by a huge front line against Cleveland. How long will we play Horford out of position, when he might bring a more dominant defensive center in a trade? Or would you consider moving him to Power Forward and trading either Josh or Marvin?

Not sure how to phrase this to get a honest answer, but with no head coaching change coming – is there a chance we’ll follow the Cavs lead with Mike Brown and see an offensive or defensive guru brought in to help Coach Woodson.

What is his plans for Josh Childress. Will he try to resign him or trade his rights?

if tashun prince is available will the hawks try to move for him(trade marvin maybe) or try to move up in the draft for a younger point guard( you could trade a.c. law for crittion(former ga tech point guard in memphis) neither player is gettting much playing time and both where first round picks but he might be more of what coach is looking for a scoring point guard.

Assuming we retain Bibby, Johnson and Smith at the 1, 2, and 3 spots, what free agent big men look attractive for addition at the 4 and 5 spots?

Sekou,

My question to our new GM is other than Mike Bibby’s addition, How valuable do you believe the bench play of Flip Murray and Zaza is to our team and will they get an extened stay in Atlanta?

2nd question is after seeing the Hawks get outmanned in the playoffs on the post play and on the boards, Do you see a need in drafting, or trading for a true Center? I truely believe Josh Smith played better than our Captain in the playoffs and he needs some help. I love Horford he just didn’t go hard in the playoffs.

I have a few ideas for the hawks roster.
1. Trade Joe Johnson, Craig claxton, A.C. Law, and Randolph Morris to the Suns for Shaquille O’Neal and a 2nd rounder or 2
2. Sign Allen Iverson
3. Sign Jason kidd (he would come here if we have Shaq)
4. draft ty lawson (he will be around when we draft)
5. resign ZAZA
then your starting five would be.
Kidd
Iverson
Josh smith
Al horford
Shaq
I think this would be a great team, Plus with Shaq you can get veteran free agents on the cheap look at miami in 2006 and the Lakers in 2004. Players want to play with Shaq.

I would like to ask Rick Sund how pleased he was with our offensive production and (if Woodson is retained)could we possibly get an “offensive coordinator” (in the same vein as a Tex Winters) that would create more motion in our half court sets. Contrary to many of the complaints of my peers, I felt our biggest issue wasn’t the size of our front court, but it was the stretches during both the Miami and Cav’s series where we’d go 3-5 minutes with out a field goal. In my estimation that took us out of several of the games because teams make runs. If you can’t score to keep the game close, it doesn’t matter how tall your front court is. We can create several mismatches with our existing roster. However, our offense seems to be stagnant for long periods of time.

I like the offensive coordinator question. John Kuester, you should know, is Cleveland’s OC.

Will Mike Woodson still be the coach? Or is he looking for a replacement. Someone who will try to have an offensive plan.

Mark Bradley

I think I can answer that one. Woodson is going to be the coach unless someone else hires him away.

I think, in addition to the Bibby question–which is, in my mind, first on the table–that I would be interested in knowing the future plans for Acie Law. Will Mr. Sund be willing to either push Woodson to use him or go ahead and push him out the door, before all of his trade value is lost?

What can you tell us about the future of Acie Law? This kid was supposed to be coachable and developed this year, but injuries have hindered his career and he looks like he’s worked his way into Woodson’s doghouse. Does he have a future w/ the Hawks?

Mark Bradley

NBA history is filled with examples of teams where the coach who built and cajoled young players into being a cohesive, competitive group isn’t the right coach to take the next step: Think Doug Collins and then Phil Jackson with the Bulls. Are the Hawks at that point yet? If not, when?

Why do you think Cleveland totally dominated the Hawks?
What can you do to change this?

What, if anything, will be done this summer (trading rights, procure players) with the draft rights for European League player David Andersen (2nd round 2002 draft; PF, 6′- 11″ 245 lbs., 29 years old) , Turkish league player Cenk Akyol (2nd round 2005 draft; SG, 6′ 4″, 200 lbs, 22 years old)
and/or any other(s) hanging out there?

Last one: What exactly is our team philosophy, what do we WANT to be and how will that shape our upcoming draft selections to get us further next year?
Are we (or do we want to be):
An athletic/run opponents out-of-the gym squad?
A half-court, Defensive/lock-down, grind-it-out/gutty style of play squad?
Mix of both or neither?

What are we?!?!?!

Considering injuries, did you feel the Hawks gave it their best effort during the playoffs, and did their performance leave you thinking the Hawks are close to being an elite team, or still a few pieces away?

What is our desired style of play (hint: athletic plays who can run)
Do you desire a PG that can penetrate and play defense?
Are you building for a short run or a long term team (like Portland)?
Are you considering adding an offensive assistant coach?
Are you and Woody on the same page with player development?
Why draft a PG if he will not be developed?
Please consider adding veteran players like Jarvis Hayes who can shoot.

Thanks Mark, good job!

I’m interested in the draft too. I’m curious if Rick feels like we can get someone at the 19th spot that can actually help us in 2009, not three years down the road. I’d love an upperclassman like Maynor over a project like Mullens.

Thanks for the team and helping to create success.

Now, how agressive do you want to be in adding to this team?

How will help Coach Woodson find some heart and soul for this team? How are you planning on building and creating more fire and heart for the Hawks? The playoffs exposed a lot, showed some flashes and revealed some flaws. Tired or not, the team lacked determination and fight.

I would encourage you to go after winners and hustlers in the draft. Find guys that get it… that understand team… the Al Horford’s coming out of college.

Just to give those reading the blog an update, Sund was on 790 the Zone this morning and here’s the highlights:

Mike Woodson will be back. Definitively.

-He has a ranking system of every player in the NBA. I love this part of his philosophy.

-He liked what he saw out of Acie through 2 months. Doesn’t sound like he wants to give up on him but doesn’t think he’s a starter at this point.

-Calls Josh Smith a combo of Ben Wallace and Scottie Pippen.

-Addressed Childress situation: He’s willing to talk to Josh about coming back. Called him another chip or moving piece in the total puzzle.

If the Hawks can resign Bibby for a resonsible price, have you considered moving him to the 2 position, moving JJ to the 3 position, and trading Marvin for a quality PG? Sessions (Bucs PG) is a FA. Westbrook would be a great trade also!

Second question – Josh Smith is a beast, but he is a tweener. He does not shoot well from outside to play the 3 position and he struggles on defense against bigger PF. Have you considered trading Josh Smith for a starting 5 man or trading up to draft Thabeet, resigning Zaza, and moving Horford to the 4 position?

Thanks Mark!

If you cannot come to terms with Bibby, would you take back equal salary in a Sign & Trade, or would you just let him walk and use that money to re-sign players such as: Williams/Anderson/Childress/Pachulia, etc…?

Also, what would be the back-up plan for a starting Point Guard?
