I think Fin is too valuable on third down and in the redzone, but with the addition of Gonzales that could be a possibility. However, we do not have a 5th WR on the roster and did not draft one. Means Aaron Kelly or the practice squad guy will make the team. The other one would have to beat out Finneran, which I just don't see happening. The other FAs are just bodies to catch balls at camp.

So to answer your question, Aaron Kelly should focus on making it as a 5th receiver first and then go after the 4th; he doesn't have to beat out Fin. Fin also doesnt make that much.

Looking at the free agent pickups, I wonder if Clemson's Aaron Kelly might not end up replacing an aging Brian Finneran? He has the height of a possession receiver and he seems to have good hands and decent speed. If he can add a few pounds he might be a younger, cheaper Finneran?

Mighty incisive on your part, Wrecker. I must confess that I missed that connection. (Then again, I'm the biggest misser this side of the Mississippi.)

I was skimming thru the bios of all the newest Falcons and noticed a theme/profile of all these players. I found it interesting, so I decided to read the bios of all the players from last year's draft to see if the theme/profile held, and boy does it ever.

THOMAS DIMITROV LIKES PLAYERS WITH AT LEAST 3 YEARS OF STARTING EXPERIENCE. I guess its easier to grade a player's ability and consistency over 30-40 games than it is 20-25. They know what they're getting is not a one year wonder. (That's why I felt Stafford was the better QB in this draft over Sanchez or Freeman, even just a junior himself, because he started 2 full seasons and most of his freshman year. You know what you see is what you get, and Sanchez is a one year starter who couldn't beat out John David Booty, who is holding a clipboard in the NFL these days, not to mention his own college coach thought he wasn't ready). I guess that's why it wasn't nearly as big a risk to Dimitrov to draft Ryan, because he spent 5 years in college (redshirt, backup, backup/starter, starter, starter). Same for Sam Baker. The guy started 49 games and had three first team all-American seasons (and he wasn't good enough to take at 21?). Peria Jerry, William Moore, the CB's Owens and Middleton, Sidbury and Walker all started at least two seasons plus played/started significant snaps in a third or fourth season. None of these guys was a junior or senior first time starter. Adkins is the exception here, but he played a ton on special teams and was a backup role player, which I think Dimitrov likes to draft for specific roles. But guys from last year like Curtis Lofton and Chevis Jackson, or Kroy Biermann, all these guys were multiyear starters. I think that type of emphasis pays off, because you spend less time in developing basic skills, and more time getting them up to speed on scheme.

I like what I'm seeing.

BrewDawg, I'm sorry I missed your question last night. But I should tell you that I'll be blogging before (and during, and after) Game 5 tomorrow.

And I don't think Jamaal Anderson is the worst Falcons pick ever. Bruce Pickens would be pretty high -- or low, depending on your view -- on that board. As would Aundray Bruce. But if I had to name just one, I'd go with Slim Pickens.
