Athens — If you saw the game, be it live from Sanford Stadium or via the high-def glory of ESPN, you’re wondering how in the world Georgia is going to beat Vandy. And here, being the committed contrarian, is where I say: Relax. Georgia is going to be fine.
It’s not going to win the national championship in 2009, but it’s not going to collapse under the cannonade of verbiage emanating from little Lane Kiffin. This is a very good program that will continue to be a very good program. (And, as measures go, spring games offer zilch. Remember how awful Georgia Tech looked 12 months ago? Remember that same Tech winning between these same hedges on Nov. 29, 2008?)
Yes, Matthew Stafford is gone, and no, there’s no more Knowshon Moreno, but Georgia under Mark Richt has suffered other losses — David Greene and David Pollack and Thomas Davis and Brian VanGorder in the span of one offseason — and chugged ever onward. You know all those recruits about whom folks get so excited? They’ll keep the Bulldogs on track.
More important, Georgia learned last season that skill alone guarantees nothing. “It doesn’t matter how talented you are,” said Rennie Curran, the gifted linebacker. “We’ve definitely got talent, but it’s going to be the intangibles, the leadership, the discipline and the technique that makes this a team.”
That didn’t happen in 2008, when a multitude of penalties and three protracted defensive lapses undid the team voted No. 1 in August. Said A.J. Green, the splendiferous receiver: “We’ll be real good if we play as a team, and we’re pushing each other harder.”
Sorry, there are no polls available at the moment. Was such urgency not in evidence a year ago? Green again: “Yeah, just a little bit, probably. We maybe believed the hype. But [not being ranked No. 1] is a better place to start — it gives you something to work for.”
Nothing happened Saturday to make Bulldog Nation stand and shout, “Hurrah!” Big deal. When you’re playing yourself, there really can’t be a winner.
Said Joe Cox, the new No. 1 quarterback: “If the offense goes up and down the field, people would be talking about how bad the defense did. It’s a grind going against each other every day in practice, and this was just the last day of it. We just did it in front of a bunch of people.”
The offense didn’t go up and down the field. There were 18 first downs made and 329 yards gained, and the game’s only touchdown came on the final snap. Cox and Logan Gray, the second-stringer, looked OK. (The early enrollee Aaron Murray looked quite good.) Lots of passes were dropped. And the great Green caught a flea-flicker from Cox on the game’s first play and then nothing else.
Again, it’s April. Were this September, the Bulldogs would have been more assiduous in the attempt to feed their best player. But September is five months off.
Is this team apt to win the SEC East? Not with Tebow and the reigning BCS titlists still sitting there, no. But these Bulldogs will build the bridge to the post-Tebow years, and it will be a sturdy structure. They’ll go 9-3 and position themselves for 2010 and beyond.

Im a die hard DAWG and always will be. I was really impressed with our DE play and I see a strong future in Logan Gray and especially Aaron Murray. This kid is 3 months from a devastating injury and playing H.S. football, and he didnt looked like he was comfortable in the game. I hope his height does not become a problem. Im not a pro, but I played ball for 11 years in Warner Robins. I cant see how every year we have so many problems catching the ball. Between Coaching and these gloves they wear, I cannot believe it. If you have never used them, these gloves aqre so good and stick so well to a ball that its CRAZY to think we have this problem. And I could be way off base, But I wonder is Caleb King scared when he runs the ball. Im not saying it in a silly way, but I have played with guys that were scared to get hit and he reminds me of that. Just my opinion. Im ready for Sept. We have a long hard year ahead. Tougher schedule than last year. I had to correct murrays last name from my post.. Been a long day Go DAWGS

Billy, I agree with you about Caleb. He is certainly a let down and I don’t thing that he will get any better.
However, Carlton Thomas looked real good and he will definitely have a breakthrough year in 2009.

My take after watching the game on TV – book the Ramada Inn Shreveport while there is still time dog fans. 8-4 maybe 9-3 if truly lucky, but most likely 7-6.

I can’t believe some of you are putting so much on a spring football game. The entire team that will be in place in the fall wasn’t even on display. Do you same people watch nfl exhibition games and preseason nba games and make your assements on how a team will do in the up coming year, no! So just chill and wait until we see the dawgs in a real game situation before we start analyaing the team and what their record might be.

What is Wrong With You People?
April 12th, 2009

Seriously, what is wrong with you people? UGA has close to 20-25 players out for the spring because of injury…our best 2 linemen didnt even play (Sturdivant, Owens). Spring games always tend to be vanilla. just calm down people..geez.
Now I must admit that it doesnt take a rocket scientist to see that Logan Gray is clearly better talent wise than Joe Cox. I think Richt has to get Gray more reps now that he is full time at QB. He is a stud and Cox didnt really jump out at me much but he seemed steady. Gray was 9 for 13 and thats not even counting a couple of drops by the receivers. He played about as well as he possibly could. There were a couple of plays where he wanted to tuck and run it but the refs blew it dead on contact. He brings a DJ Shockley-like skill set to the QB position, not Cox. Murray looked good with the few throws he did make but I really dont see how Richt can pencil in Cox over Gray unless Cox has been lights out during the closed practices before the G-Day game.
Im not really sure if Caleb King is ever gonna be the same after breaking his leg during his senior year of high school…he just doesnt have the speed or quicks like he use to…he was suppose to be the next Herschel but something is just off about him right now. he needs a confidence booster fast or else Carlton Thomas is gonna pass right by him on the depth chart

Kirk Herbstreit reports that UGA will not be in contention for anything this year.
Well thanks a lot ESPN Kirk Herbstreit.
That was some miserable football, today.
Everyone knows our Defense is no good, and that we recruited one defensive end to add to a team desperate for 4 DE. Our “Defensive Ends” in the G-Day Game got “sacks” for reaching out and touching the QB on his shoulder pad. Justin Houston had 2 sacks. Clearly, none of those would have been sacks in a real game.
And, everyone knows that we spend all of our scholarships instead on quarterbacks, linebackers, offensive linemen and kickers.
Carlton Thomas, if not for him, this would have been one wasted Spring Practice, for what Kirk Herbstreit of ESPN saw.
Where did they get those guys ESPN calls announcers ? Not one play did they tell us who made what play. Brad Nessler, turn toward the game, get out your Roster and try announcing the game. No one cares one iota about your impressions about UGA you formed before the game began.
Matt Stinchcomb, sir, you got caught up in their banter and failed to name the players who did make a play.
I shut down the volume and turned up WSB-AM 750.
We did a poor job on a beautiful day to get a crowd to Sanford.
We are in a funk.
Don’t give me this injury bunk either. No more graphics of this guy is hurt or that guy.
We threw 1 pass to AJ Green on the first play.
Not one thereafter.
The entire rest of the game, no passes to AJ Green.
Logan Gray looked significantly ahead of the two (2) more freshmen quarterbacks signed.
Why did we need instead of another defensive end, 2 more scholarship quarterbacks ?
Our secondary doesn’t look any good at all. It’s like basketball, where one team loses because the other team played better free throw defense against them.
We have no offense.
And, yet what ?
What everyone knows is no defense, watched pass after pass after pass after pass after pass after pass after pass after pass, dropped.
Then, we finally give the ball to Carlton Thomas at the end of the game where we called timeout after timeout, and he shreds the defense for the lone touchdown of the day.
Miserable.
We are a makeshift football team trying to win 10 games in a 13-game season, every year.
Why not kick the ball off, when your single biggest item to work on is kicking the ball off ? You don’t have to return it; our problem is we kicked the ball out of bounds 10 times and into the end zone once all season long. Blair Walsh needed to work on his kickoffs. And, so now, we have yet another scholarship tied up not at defensive end, but as kickoff specialist.
AJ Green, now, is going to return punts.
Marcus Washington, now, is going to play Defense End.
Logan Gray, now, is no longer going to play Special Teams.
Caleb King, now, continues to show that he is struggling.
Tight Ends, now, show that they continue to be nothing with the majority of the passes dropped to begin the game, to wide open tight ends play after play after play after play.
Then, they caught a few.
When the guys thrown to did catch the ball, they then fumbled it.
We beat a miserable Michigan State team, who beat not one team in the Final AP Top 25 Poll.
Besides them, we Lost to Every Final AP Poll Top 25 team, ourselves.
And, this is what we show.
National TV Audience.
Not being ranked high, is NOT GOOD.
Were it not for being Number 1 to begin last season, our final ranking would not have been in the Final AP Poll Top 25 for the first time since 1996.
Not that we deserved to be ranked at all in the Final AP Poll Top 25 in the 2006-2007 season either.
And, so Mark Bradley announces that nothing is ever learned in any Spring G-Day Game, or anyone else’s Spring Game.
Oh, yes it is.
We learned quite a bit.
We have a miserable defense, who watched as every walk-on receiver was wide open all day long.
Only to drop every pass.
Recruits will bail us out ?
They say we have a Top Recruiting Class under Coach Richt and Rodney Garner, every single solitary year. Top Half a Dozen Recruiting Class in the Nation, they tell us every year. And, then what ? Well, for starters, then they every one are arrested and suspended. And, then, they get on the field and purposely injure our other players who were not arrested.
Zach Mettenberger ? We needed Zach Mettenberger, instead of another Defensive End Recruit, this year too ?
17 Offensive Linemen are on Scholarship at UGA. Did it look like we have a Max Pass Protection Offensive Line ? There were 6 sacks. Did it look like we have a Max Run Offensive Line ? There was nothing done on the ground until the last 2 plays in the game by Carlton Thomas. And, those were both totally individual efforts.
There are 12 Scholarship Linebackers in this program. Now, we have to play Marcus Washington, clearly a top linebacker, at defensive end.
Marcus Washington. We have 2 Senior Linebackers on this team, that’s it. And, Marcus Washington is 1 of the 2. Instead, we have him playing Defensive End, because we tied up all our Scholarships at QB we don’t need 2 more Freshmen Quarterbacks at, at Kick-Off Specialist when we already have Blair Walsh and Drew Butler on Kicking Scholarships, and at linebacker where we have 11 Scholarship Linebackers. Tailback in this program ? If we have one, its little Carlton Thomas. Bookend Defensive Ends recruited here ? A back-up for them ? 4-deep at some positions an no-deep at others.
We are a makeshift football team. Not convinced we can go 10-3.
There are 8 Safeties in this program. We are 4-deep at these positions, and cannot field bookend scholarship defensive ends.
Tailback ? There is a tailback on this team ? We are playing fullbacks as secret weapons as tailback.
Tight End ?
If we didn’t recruit a Tight End who steps on the field against Oklahoma State and catches, instead of dropping the first 3 passes thrown to him as we did today, we don’t have one.
Now, we have to hear all off-season how Blair Walsh is going to fight to keep his kick-off duties being handed to Bogoaty.
Sorry Joe Cox, but that was not impressive.
Caleb King, sir, you are a big disappointment. 7 rushes for 22 yards zero touchdowns and a huge big dropped pass. Uh, can you say ZERO ? Nada. Nothing. As per usual for Caleb King since the day he got on this campus. He is a Our Co-Starting Tailback ?
The only tailback we have would be 3rd string anywhere else. And, we rave about him and he isn’t that fast, nor does he block well. Who are we trying to kid ?
We have 13 Wide Receivers and Tight Ends on Scholarship and we threw 1 pass to AJ Green all game long and all the rest of them dropped every pass thrown to them.
Critical Passes. Receptions that had to be made.
To WIDE OPEN RECEIVERS ALL DAY LONG.
Where are the cover corners ? All I saw was wide open receivers and no pass defense in sight. Only to watch every pass drop or be fumbled, if it was caught.
And, no running game.
Aaron Murry should have been intercepted.
Zach Mettenberger was. He and Murray are not close to Number 2 Logan Gray. Zach not only did not complete a pass, he also threw a miserable interception. We don’t play quarterbacks like that in any game, all season long. The Defense Dominated, because Bryan Evans, at Safety, intercepted that pass ?
Our Quarterbacks stood back there like they have all day long to throw the football. We are not a very good football team.
All we have is a Defensive Tackle position. And, they are all seniors.
This is a young football team, in a transition year.
10-3 ? Never prove it to anyone, including Kirk Herbstreit of ESPN, by what we showed yesterday.
I’m damn disappointed.
Aron White dropped the passes to begin the game, all of them. Then, Caleb King dropped his pass, then Israel Troupe dropped his, then several more receivers dropped theirs. All Wide Open. All on possession plays. Then, one caught a pass, and he fumbled it.
And, we better not spend the entire Summer, now, in Jail being Suspended like the 104 Suspensions Coach Richt has already had to dole out in just his first 8 years here.
Oklahoma State, is salivating. We beat them 35-14 ‘Tween The Hedges the year before last. Since them, we have gotten much worse, and they, much better.
College Football is ruled by Offenses that do something. Uh, we don’t have 1 of those. In fact, we never have had in the entire 9-Year now Coach Richt Era.
When we can pass the ball, we forget tot hand the football to our Tailback. When we can run the football, we don’t hand the football to our Tailback and Lose Every Game to the 3 Top 25 teams in the Final AP Poll who did beat a Top 25 Final AP Poll team.
And, now that we don’t have a Tailback except maybe Carlton Thomas, we cannot catch a pass, nor prevent every receiver all day long from being wide open.
10-3 ? Can’t see it.
Good Team ? Mark Bradley, what does a good team look like to you, sir ? You wouldn’t have a clue. Stick to Kentucky Basketball, it’s all you have any knowledge of.

why on Gods earth would Richt only play eight minute quarters? He had free exposure to the entire nation, could have been a great recruiting tool, etc, etc, etc. I can’t believe Damon didn’t step in and say, “lets milk this for all its worth.” But watching Richt and hearing some of the things he has said in the past I don’t think he ever has or is capable of analyzing any thing before he acts or speaks. Plus, the way they were playing no kickoffs, no punts, no live QB’s they could have played twenty minute quarters without any injuries. It just doesn’t make any sense, all that free press and you don’t take advantage of it!!. Richt was begging everyone to come to the game and watch a team that PLAYS HARD, IS WELL ORGANIZED, DISCIPLINED AND WELL COACHED (i’m sorry I must have been at the wrong stadium) and then he puts time restraints on the quarters that barely lets you get in your seat before it is over!!!!!

I am glad I did not make the trip to Athens CEPH. THE DAWGS have to get some DISCIPLINE, INTENSITY, AMD EXECUTION. It all starts with the POOR COACHING OF THE PLAYERS. They are constantly getting raises. I think it is time for WM to raise on up out of here. I hope the players did a couple of hundred push ups for all the dropped passes. (florida gators discipline their players for mistakes-take notes CMR) It looks like COX will start the season out. He will lose his job like JOE T did. I think GRAY can get the job done. If the coaches would have planned for the future Gray would have been with Stafford and Cox working more as a QB last year. Gray would have beat Cox for the QB job. Murray has the talent but has a lot to learn. I don’t know why the game was so short. Thanks for a quick glimpse coach. I think the coaches knew they did not have the players ready too. That is a familiar story. Mikey Andrews from FSU will show you intensity. I love the Dawgs and everyone can say we need to lighten up. Then I watch the other spring games. WOW!

Yeah BuLLdawg This injury thing is getting rediculous. Do the players stretch? By watching the players sloppy play you can tell why they get hurt. Please hire some assistants that know something about the position they are coaching and give the players confidense like the OL coach does now.

Went to the game yesterday. Have seen MANY of these spring scrimmages over the years going back to the last ’60’s. They ALL suck. They are exactly that; spring scrimmages. Nothing more. The vast majority of players playing yesterday will NEVER set foot on the stadium turf once the fall comes. I mean, doesn’t ESPN have ANYTHING better to program than a silly spirng scrimmage?? Guess times are slow. And I mean ANY spring scrimmage.
No doubt there is no MNC in the play we saw yesterday. And, I think CMR will really have to do a good coaching job this year, or it could be a long one. My prediction prior to the scrimmage was 8-4 or 9-3. My estimate hasn’t changed. 2010 will be the real test for the current coaching regime. Let’s just take the scrimmage for what is: a scrimmage.

My thoughts on the scrimmage…
Gray looked very good and Murray looked like a future star. Cox was OK but he was going against the 1st team defense. But Murray was as well, wasn’t he?
Carlton Thomas will be a scatback, folks. He will not be the starting tailback. But neither will Caleb King. As I said from the time King stepped foot on campus, he is not the RB he was his junior year in high school. I’ve yet to see even glimpses of that. Samuel will be the undisputed TB of Georgia come game 1.
The WRs were embarrassing. How do you drop that many passes? It wouldn’t be a big deal if it wasn’t a major problem in years past.
I might be behind but when did we switch Marcus Washington to DE? Looked good, nevertheless.
Defense is going to be very good and prove last year was an aberration. Our DTs will be the best anywhere which will help the DEs. The key to the defense is not our DEs (’cause I think we’ll be fine) but Bryan Evans at safety.
Tony Wilson, Israel Troupe, Mike Moore….you MUST step up. I think Moore will but the others worry me.
Great day yesterday….any time Georgia plays is a great day.

S.E. Dawg makes a key point: Because it was on ESPN, a lot of folks might have been seeing a G-Day game for the first time. Perhaps they expected more. They shouldn’t have. This one doesn’t count in the standings. (If it did, Georgia would be 1-1.)

We all know there are doubters here, as well as people from other fanbases that are going to run their mouth regardless of what is posted. Everyone knows that the spring game regardless of the out come is for the coaches to get a look at what they have prior to fall practice, A set Offensive line, or starters anywhere for that matter are not even close to have been settled on. Alot of players who will possibly be key contributors to the team on both sides of the ball didn`t even set foot on the field for the G-day game. let people “yawn” or whatever they feel they need to do from watching the spring game. Dawgstyle, you don’t hire a coach because of his moral fibre or religious beliefs. If that is the case hire Billy Graham!!! You hire someone who can win football games and play for championships. Plus how do you know anything about Saban or Urbans beliefs? Maybe they don’t constantly remind you ala Richt. Personally I don’t believe you should have to constantly bring up God in a public forum,( unless you are a preacher) keep it to yourself and talk about football that was what you were hired to do, NOT PREACH! Richt needs to worry more about how he is going to take his football teams to the next level instead of his missionary work.

So We UGA fans are over reacting about the poor play and coaching. We don’t need to worry about a QB or RB for this season. The dropped passes are supposed to be overlooked. The difference here is over the years these spring games at other good football programs are showcasing real good talent. Last years Spring game was better …I know because I was there. If UGA was to play a real football game next Saturday it would be in real trouble. If Florida, Alabama and LSU were to play next week they would be ready. Its the overall program thats the problem with UGA. Ive always thought that the strength and conditioning has lacked here . The other problem at UGA is making offensive and defensive adjustments. The big exception is Stacy Searles. The scrimmage yesterday wasnt a good scrimmage.A lot of folks thought the defense looked good but it wouldnt have if the open receivers would have caught the ball and or not fumbled. Fact is we wont really know how good our defense will be until we dominate a team like South Carolina or Vandy like we are supposed to… But the fact is we are in big trouble if things dont shake out in a hurry! BuLLdawg is absolutely correct in all the things that he pointed out in his post. The passionate dawg fans like him and myself are just getting restless with the waste of talent and opportunity at UGA. To the rest of you kool aid drinkers who tell us to go support another team I say stick it in your ear and you go support a team like South Carolina….

Come on guys! It is a SPRING GAME…AND they were playing without JEFF OWENS, STURDIVANT (and several other o-linemen), BATTLE (and almost all the other D-ends), VANCE, FIGGINS, SAMUELS
NOT to mention the incoming freshman like MARLON BROWN, WASHAUN EALEY, and the two big time TEs and DB (cant remember their names this morning), all of which are likely to contribute right away!!!!!!!!!!!
I think the DAWGS, with their full alotment of players will be MUCH MUCH better than people think
@ OSU = Win
vs SC= Win
vs ARK= Win
vs AzSt= Win
vs LSU= Win (lost too many players from a team georgia killed anyway)
@ TENN= Win (kiffen will have a rough year)
@ Vandy= Win
vs FLA= likely LOSS
vs TENN Tech= Win
vs Auburn= Win (too much change and too many players lost)
vs Kentucky= Win
@ GT= Win (for the first time in a long time UGA will have payback on their mind, Tech lost too many big time D-fensive players, and people will start to figure that offense out again…it died for a reason!
So 11-1…perhaps another slip in there somewhere to fall to 10-2

2009 will be a decisive year in the coaching assesment of one Mark Richt. Injuries notwithstanding, he either shows what he’s got or not. A ten win season like last year won’t do any good, especially when most of those wins were against down and out teams like UT, ASU and Auburn, not to mention Ky and Vandy. The two good coaches he went up against last year, and we all know who they were, whipped his 2.9 million dollar a$$ good fashion—not to mention the Tech disgrace. Right, Willie? If the team fares no better this year, then all this hot air about his being one of the best in the SEC will be just that: HOT AIR. Next season will go a long way towards proving what some people say: that he is 1) Overrated and 2) Overpaid. It won’t do any good to pin the blame on Willie and Bozo anylonger. No offense to any Richt fan out there, I am sure he’s a great guy.

What i’m saying is that fans like you do nothing but be critisize everything. CMR time is coming, he is a good coach with good players, and is willing to change if something isn’t working. He has the loyalty of his players and his coaches, they have been offerd more money to go elsewhere but they have all elected to stay, because he is a good coach not because of religion.

CMR is the right coach for UGA. WM’s defense is just not impressive. If the players are missing tackles and making poor mistakes, discipline them like Florida does to their players. for example- Florida made their defense do push ups for knowshon running all over them. Knowshon did not repeat did he? Lets go dawgs!

I agree with that, but the UF coaches didn’t make them the players do it they decided that. While we were getting arrested and injured UF,GT,UA were focused and it showed this year will be different trust me they learned from last year.

Dawgystyle – it isn’t your Coach that opposing teams dislike. It is the fans that make uga the most hated team in the southeast. Most of that comes from personal experience that people have had when encountering bulldog fans. I know it is the 80 / 20 rule, but that 20% truly gives your school a terrible reputation.

I know everyone is tired of the same ole mishaps every year. It does get frustrating when one or two things are costing the team a NC. If the dawgs go 5-5 next year I will still be a Dawg forever. There is nothing like that G.

I’ve been to multiple G-Day games. They are usually low scoring, boring, sloppy, and dissapointing if you’re looking for a “real game”. However, that being said, UGA has a lot of returning talent for the fall, and the big question mark at the QB spot should be answered by cox or the obviously talented Logan Gray. Gray still has a couple years eligibility left, so I hope he makes a push for the starting job because he’s obviously the most athletic passer on the roster. He was a 4 star coming out of high school like Murray, Mettenberger, and higher rated than Cox. As far as RB, I expect Richard Samuel to return and carry most of the load at RB due to his size and speed with thomas, king, and ealey getting a few touches. It’ll be like when UGA had Brown, Ware, and Lumpkin in the backfield. Skill positions overall should be solid, and yes, there will be many dropped balls this season (as usual).

There are more laughs on UGA blogs than on SNL.

Why was Stafford and Moreno appointed coaches as noted above. Why not give that honor to those players who finished their academic/athletic elgibility? Nice CMR really nice.

Dawgystyle, your reference to nick saban and urban cryer makes it sound like you’ve been on the receiving end of a little dawgystyle action yourself. Just out of prison, area you?
