CPAC 2013: Hearing from some of the possible next GOP standard bearers

We’re approaching the midpoint of CPAC 2013, and we’ve heard from about half of the people expected to be contenders in 2016 (at least, those who are on the agenda — and no, Donald Trump isn’t one of the people I have in mind). We can begin to see the ground these potential candidates are beginning to stake out.

The first of these possible candidates was Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida. Rubio covered the waterfront of long-held conservative beliefs, on  both fiscal and social issues. “Our challenge,” he said, “is to create an agenda applying our principles.” The broad outlines of such an agenda from him mostly included conventionally conservative stuff. If there is one theme he wants to own, I’d say it is American exceptionalism.

He cited a different book: “The China Dream,” recently written by a Chinese army colonel. The gist, Rubio said, is that “China’s goals should be to surpass the United States as the world’s preeminent military and economic power,” and that the 21st century should pit China and America in “a race to see who should become the champion country to lead world progress.”

It was in that context that Rubio responded to criticism that the GOP was not promoting any new ideas (as opposed to those new-thinking Democrats who are still pursuing long-time goals such as universal publicly funded health care and gun control) by citing the hope America offers to the rest of the world, such as his parents who immigrated from Cuba.

“We don’t need a new idea,” he said. “There is an idea. It’s called America, and it still works. You want proof that it still works, look around the world today. Who are they copying? Not the former Soviet Union. Not Russia. They’re not even copying China. They’re copying us. They may claim to hate us, but they sure would like to be us.”

***

Immediately following Rubio was Sen. Rand Paul, the Kentuckian and son of former congressman and presidential candidate Ron Paul. He took the stage to Metallica’s “Enter Sandman” and wearing a sports coat, tie and blue jeans. He was dressed like some college professors I had, and he launched into a constitutional semi-lecture that began with a discussion of his now-famous, 13-hour filibuster on the Senate floor about the Obama administration’s drone policies.

“We need to jealously guard all our liberties,” he said, before turning his message to one of those voter groups Republicans know they have to be more successful with.

“The Facebook generation can detect falseness and hypocrisy a mile away. I know, I have kids,” he said. “They are the core, though, of the leave-me-alone coalition. They doubt Social Security will be there for them. They worry about jobs and rent and student loans. They want leaders who won’t feed them a lot of crap or sell them short.

“Ask the Facebook generation whether we should put a kid in jail for the nonviolent crime of drug use, and you’ll hear a resounding ‘no.’ Ask the Facebook generation if they want to bail out too-big-to-fail banks with their tax dollars, and you’ll hear a ‘hell no.’ There is nothing constitutional about bailing out Wall Street. Likewise, there is nothing ‘progressive’ about loans to billionaires to build solar panels.”

As you might have expected, Paul is going to try to pull the GOP in a more libertarian direction. “The GOP of old has grown stale and moss-covered,” he summed it up. His speech didn’t receive as much consistent applause as Rubio’s did, but he had the audience in his hand by the end. Could the same thing happen in the 2016 primary?

***

Friday brought Rep. Paul Ryan to the conference, and the 2012 vice presidential candidate received a very warm welcome. As you might expect, the House Budget Committee chairman focused a lot on budget matters, but he wanted to talk not just about the numbers but the reasons balancing the budget is important.

“A debt crisis would be more than an economic event,” Ryan argued. “It would be a moral failure. By cheapening our currency, government would cheat us of our just rewards.”Even now we are hurting American working families. By living beyond our means, the government is sending us a message. It is saying, if you plan ahead, if you make sacrifices for your kids, if you saved, you’re a sucker. It is brazenly stealing from our children and from young adults, and it has to stop.”

He argued for restoring government to a more appropriate size, one that allows it to do certain things well while leaving other things to the people.

“We need to make room for community, for that vast middle ground between the government and the people,” he said. “They don’t find common ground through grim isolation or government fiat,” but through the connections they make themselves.

***

Later Friday and Saturday, we’ll hear from Rick Santorum (hey, he finished second last year, which was yet another year the GOP nomination went to the “next guy in line”), Bobby Jindal, Jeb Bush and Scott Walker. I’ll post thoughts about their speeches afterward.

In my more centrist mind, Rubio and Jeb Bush are the early favorites.

Ryan and Paul are too far from the reality of mainstream voters. Santorum is old news and hasn’t had a job in years. Christy was not invited, but has shown himself to be too parochial with wanting storm Sandy aid even when it had all sorts of liberal items attached, then went along with NJ Medicaid expansion. His gun control ideas will hurt him, too – doubt he has much of a shot at the nomination. Jindal? Don’t think he is ready for prime time. Walker is not seasoned enough, either.

He evidently has not traveled much, the rest of the world is not copying us. They have taken a few select economic principles and applied them in their own ways. They try to promote a society less grounded in linage than achievements but on issues like health care, guns, CEO pay, taxes, education, social safety nets, retirement benefits and a host of others they are most definitely not “copying us”.

Come folks wake up and smell the coffee, the world is lining up to hedge their assets in US dollars. Since 2008 the dollar is up 15% vs the Euro and flat against the Yen. Wake up.

The problem with your imploding GOP is not the consultants. It is not the evil liberal media that is out to get you. (Though your cult of victimhood is part of it.) It is not that you have to do a better job of getting your message out there. It is not that you are not conservative enough. (Whatever the hell that even means to you wordsmiths anymore.)

Your message stinks on ice. Ask mainstream America.

This past November massacre makes three out of the last four elections where you have gotten bludgeoned. And even the party operatives are now scared as hell that this will be the tea soaked trend going forward.

And there can be no denying that the trend and demographics look absolutely terrible for the Segregation Party – you are white, aging and dying off.

And all of the silly phrases, slogans and bumpers stickers by Rubio and others and all of these empty repackaging attempts, in lieu of substantive changes and moving back to some at least observable distance from the reasoned and reasonable center are not going to change that.

Somebody the other day said it perfectly. You are like fitness trainers at a start up gym, who trying to get new customers, tell them that they are fat, lazy, stupid and useless.

Most of your rabid rabble here have no intention of changing a darn thing or even admitting that they have any significant problems, and to them I say, good for you! Stay the course!

Jefferson,

Churches are full of compassion for the poor. Many church members are poor themselves. But they do everything they can to reach the poor. That is because we are all children of God. Each indivbidual is responsible for their own outreach. It is an individual drive done in love.

Governement cannot replace personal compassion. You may try to turn it over to an impersonal entity but it does not work well. That we have seen as dependency on government replaces individual responsibility.

We must strive for individual responsibility or fail. That is the foundation of our country. Independence!

So I do not like those things which destroy our independence. You probably do not know what I am even talking about. Dependence seems demanded by Democrats.

Right now, we’re spending more money to pay interest on debt than we’ll spend on education, homeland security, transportation and veterans’ benefits combined this year. Surely, there’s something better to spend that money on. And those interest payments are a significant tax on Americans — a debt tax that Washington doesn’t want to talk about. And just wait until interest rates rise, because at some point they will.

And guess what’s going to happen when interest rates go up.

LEMONT, Ill. (AP) — Envisioning cars that can go “coast to coast without using a drop of oil,” President Barack Obama on Friday urged Congress to authorize spending $2 billion over the next decade to expand research into electric cars and biofuels to wean automobiles off gasoline.

Total whackjob. None of it works. Never will. Basic engineering says it’s impossible. What don’t you understand about that? Even dhimmi karter finally caught on.

We are located on top of a sea of oil and what America needs is jobs to extract it and the revenue form exporting it. Why are you liberals so against progress?

The Keystone XL pipeline is a no brainer if you are interested in creating a bunch of jobs. People have to make the pipe, build the pumps, truck the materials to the various work sites, assemble the pipeline, provide power and communication to it, build the terminals and then years upon years of maintenance work, all completely paid for by private industry, with taxes being paid the whole way from all directions, nothing is being exaggerated.

But some total thirteenth century moron worried about spilling some oil on the ground that you extracted it from, seems to be more concerned with brutalizing the US economy so he can blame Republicans for the suckwester.

But be that as it may here are some problems the GOP faces……

2012 GOP Platform: “We reaffirm our support for a Constitutional amendment defining marriage as the union of one man and one woman.”
REALITY: 63% of Americans support either gay marriage or civil unions.

2012 GOP Platform: “We assert the sanctity of human life and affirm that the unborn child has a fundamental individual right to life which cannot be infringed.”
FACT: 70% of Americans don’t think Roe v Wade should be overturned.

2012 GOP Platform: The assurance of religious freedom has never been more needed than it is today, as liberal elites try to drive religious beliefs – and religious believers – out of the public square.”
FACT: In order to promote both good government and religious freedom, the intent of the Founders was to create a 100% secular federal government.

GOP: Both sides of the origins of life should be taught in public school science classes.
FACT: Intelligent Design, a repackaging of Creationism, is in no way scientific theory. See Tammy KItzmiller v. Dover Area School School District, 2004.

GOP: Abstinence-only sex education is effective.
FACT: Abstinence-only sex education is a complete failure. Nine separate studies have shown no difference in teen pregnancy rates between teens that have taken an abstinence-only course and those that have taken comprehensive sex education.

GOP: The earth is only 6,000 years old.
FACT: The earth is millions and millions of years old.

ALSO: Interestingly the huge move in America away from Christianity in the past decade is in large part the fault of the religious right elements that have corrupted the GOP. Young adults look at the intolerance and hatred espoused by conservative Christians and say “Oh that’s Christianity? No thank you.”

Romney is now a trivia question (kinda like the Buffalo Bills and the Super Bowl losses), Bachmann, Palin, Paul, Santorum, (no need for comedy there), and a bunch of others who believe that America wants them in the Oval office with a finger on the button…. Makes many of us wonder just where any GOP’er was during the, you know, the ELECTION??!! It’s a shame that the only “contender” who has a snowball’s chance is Bush…(you know the one you guys aren’t afraid to reference). And he even chastised his own Party for its behavior. But lets not dwell on that… We gotta stay in front of China (fear), we have to cut support for working Americans, but we’re doing it so corporate profits remain substantial, while the very workers (if they haven’t been laid off struggle to survive), and the prospects for that group, those leeches (aka “the 47%), continue to want hand outs from the government. Yeah, vote that Ryan Budget in…..

Hate to say it, but a little prediction is needed here…. I see a GOP loss…forever….

Thousands of women suffer spontaneous abortions(miscarriages) every week.

And yet, your “God of love” supposedly knows even when a sparrow falls to the ground.

So, this God must know of, and approve of, all these natural abortions.

So, are you comparing God to Hitler?

And what in the hell does this have to do with woman made abortions? God is God and God is the only one allowed to take life at anytime. Woman is a human being and is not God. Why do you progressive women think you are equal to God.

“breck, please keep your religion off the blog.”

Right Barry. This from a guy that calls sex education “progressive.”

History time boys – The very first Christian sect were the Ebionites, from Jerusalem. They formed in about the year 80 AD, or about 45 years after Jesus died. They probably had parents or grandparents that were followers of Jesus when he was alive.

The Ebionites believed Jesus was the Messiah. They did not, however, believe in the virgin birth, the resurrection or that Jesus was divine. Within 20 years their beliefs were mainstream Christianity.

So what happened? Well about 100 years later the authors of the New Testament showed up, and apparently they’d just completed a creative writing class. All of a sudden Jesus was endowed with super-hero powers. And that’s why religious scholars such as the Jesus Seminar spend thousands and thousands of hours combing through the New Testament to determine which parts are factual and which are fictional.

So the idea that the New Testament is word-for-word true is complete nonsense. And if that idea is part of your particular faith it’s time to find a new one. Let me suggest Unitarianism.

The key to success in this kind of enterprise is the host’s ability to articulate his positions in a logical and cogent manner. This is because most people will not listen for very long to an analysis-driven program if the analysis itself does not make rational sense.

And this is precisely where the crux of liberals’ problem lies. They are simply not able to explain and defend their views in rational fashion. This is not at all surprising, for how does one justify high taxes, gay marriage, abortion, multiculturalism and such? They are all based on false premises and they all produce disastrous outcomes. Anything more than a superficial examination must reveals them for the frauds and failures that they in truth are. This is why liberalism cannot withstand the analytical vigor of talk radio and why it has failed so abysmally in it.

Now that Bush is gone, Sarah Palin serves as the bogeyman, someone the progs can use to mock and poke fun at, because she believes what they were brought up believing, but renounced later, as they became “enlightened” and “smarter than their parents.

She represents back home, America loving, Mom and Dad, happiness, self sufficiency, old foggies sitting around the corner store, responsibility to family, ability to take care of oneself and their family, God fearing, and moral certain.

By disparaging and ridiculing her, they are trying to convince themselves they made the right decision in abandoning their upbringing. Maybe America has moved on from those traditional values she represents, at least they are trying to convince everyone else that it has.

So I clobbered him for it. Turning to guns, Palin criticized the background-checks bill that passed through a Senate committee this week and Obama’s push for more gun control.

“More background checks?” Palin said. “Dandy idea, Mr. President. Shoulda started with yours.””

“Evidently you did not read Rafe’s second paragraph where he says exactly what he believes and enjoys.“

Dusty,

If you want to correct me, perhaps you should first read what you wrote about for the second time.

This is Rafe’s second paragraph:

“She represents back home, America loving, Mom and Dad, happiness, self sufficiency, old foggies sitting around the corner store, responsibility to family, ability to take care of oneself and their family, God fearing, and moral certain”

He writes about Sarah Palin, not about what he believes, although I have no reason to dispute that he might be enjoying sitting around the corner store, and I am fairly sure he always feels moral certain.”

“Maybe you should tell us which of those values and experiences you find disagreeable.”

And why should I? I criticized Pailin’arrogance, ignorance and self-righteousness, not any of the above.

I am not arrogant, never think I am the smartest person in the room, unlike Barry, I know my limitations, but I do know there are only 50 states and corpsman is pronounced “coreman” not “corpseman”. If he would release his college records we would have a better idea about his intelligence. We know what GWB and John Kerry did in school, and we know John McCain finished at the bottom of his class at Annapolis, and we know of Mitt Romney’s stellar grades and degrees, but do not know squat about the Emperor’s education, wonder why.

He may be far above ignorant, but he is certainly often out of his league in areas like the Fed Budget and economics, and unlike me, he doesn’t realize that many of the people giving him advice are more knowledgeable than he.

His lambasting Paul Ryan, to his face, after inviting Ryan to sit it on the speech was low down, mean, and ignorant. Ryan could school him on the federal budget, but he would be a petulant obnoxious student, so they wouldn’t get far.

When he tells America that the good economy we have enjoyed from the 1980 to 2008 was unjust and unfair and “We ain’t going back”, even though it worked for 80% of us, he is playing self righteous vindicator. But seriously……will members of Congress, either party, try to close loopholes? Of course not. I know it is probably useless, but I am such an eternal optimist. Try to understand that saying highest ever achieved “ is totally meaningless.

The US national debt was $259 billion in 1946. That was about one and half percent of the national debt we havenow! And you know what? That was a more serious debt for the country in 1946 than we have now.

Dusty,

Sorry about your birds. There are, actually, many other here – I just did not want to pour it on. I see a robin almost every day splashing in one of our bird baths, finches seem to have started changing color, I have seen towhees, and one of several woodpeckers seems to be almost permanently on one of bird cakes. The hawks are usually being attacked at this time of the year, here mostly by blue jays, but this year also by mockingbirds.

A deer appeared a few years ago on our front yard, but have not seen one since. Perhaps moved to your neighborhood.

Well, the progs have really enjoyed poking fun at CPAC! When is LPAC, surely they have one, there is an empty phone booth available for rent somewhere. Or should that be PPAC for the Progs, now that Liberal has been abandoned, as unpopular with the masses.

Maybe the WH, pay for access meetings, serve the purpose of PPAC, but only rich Progs and the ruling class get to go to those. Oh the humanity, of having to survive as an under resourced political activist prog and not be allowed in.

Surely there are prog meetings open to the proletarians.

Here is what happens when your country, ignores its debt and goes broke. The Obama voters think well, we will just default on the Chinese and the other T-bill holders and it will not affect me. However, Nancy Pelosi and others have said before that there is this large pot of money being untapped in our 401K accts, that could be taxed, so they will probably go there before defaulting on the debt. What is 10% of your life savings anyway, as opposed to sending 27 million to Moracco to teach them to make pottery or 2.5 million to study why lesbians get fat.

In a radical departure from previous aid packages, euro zone finance ministers want Cyprus savers to forfeit up to 9.9 percent of their deposits in return for a 10 billion euro ($13 billion) bailout to the island, which has been financially crippled by its exposure to neighboring Greece.

The decision, announced on Saturday morning, stunned Cypriots and caused a run on cashpoints, most of which were depleted within hours. Electronic transfers were stopped.

Lil’ Barry you are the 2nd person to mention the 401K today, the best deal going by a long shot. And yet a dismally small number of Americans, somewhere in the 2% range, are taking full advantage of this instrument.

Take they typical Mr. and Mrs. Jones, as in keep-up-with-the-Joneses. They are both 50 years old and have each managed to tuck away about 5K for retirement. That sucks. They should have at least 450K each – 401K + self-directed IRA + Roth IRA – at this stage in their life. Oh sure they have a really nice house full of really nice stuff and two really nice cars and they take really nice vacations. But what you don’t hear is that they’re stupid losers who live paycheck to paycheck and have 150K in credit card debt. It’s good that they like nice stuff though, because in 25 years they’ll be standing in line at the nicest soup kitchen in town. Because they suffer from the dreaded disease known as rampant consumerism.

Whatever “Savior” the GOP and CPAC resurrects they must represent all the American People (elderly, young people, women, minorities, gays & lesbians, Christains, Muslims & Jews, etc.).

Mitt Romney should have rejected the ideas of the homegrown terrorist group(s) known as the “tea party” (klansmen, skinheads, militia’s, birther’s, etc.) and who ever the GOP chooses to run in 2016 they must change their strategy and show compassion for all the American People.

Speech to the American People – Voters
Hello American People – I am a GOP candidate and I want your vote in 2016 for the Office of the President of the USA. Before I get started first, I want to apologize for the hatred, fear and bigotry displayed by the GOP. We are all Americans and I will fight for your rights if I am elected.

Second, I reject the values of the homegrown terrorist group(s) known as the “tea party” (klansmen, skinheads, milita’s, birther’s, etc.). The whole world saw the hatred and bigotry displayed by the “tea party” and heard their call to battle (take back my country).

Third,I promise the American People to never let any group(s) dictate how the American People will be governed in the future. No more contracts with Grover Norquist, Karl Rove, etc.

Fourth, I am putting distance between myself and all special interest groups looking to “buy” my vote. No more pandering to the rich and powerful.

Know that I have confessed and I agree to represent ALL the American People can I have your vote?

change their strategy and show compassion for all the American People.

Compassion used to be reserved for those who needed help and were unable to help themselves. Now, the Dems have redefined it to include those, who just decide they personally are oppressed and are victims.

At some point we have to prioritize, who we are obligated to help, there is never going to be enough money to support all those who volunteer to be supported.

I thought the GOP was losing because they were not inclusive and said mean things about the opposition, so if Robert represents the Dems, they too are guilty of demonizing the opposition. More Democrat hypocrisy from Robert.
