And the Oscar goes to . . .

The Oscars are this weekend and, as I’ve seen only one film in the running for Best Picture (”Argo”), I can’t give you the slightest hunch as to who will win the big award. (Insert joke here about just how reliable my gut feelings are.)

If getting to the movie theater with two small children weren’t so hard, I’d like to have seen some of the others — especially “Lincoln” and “Zero Dark Thirty.” I’m sure I’ll see them at some point, even if it’s at home.

If any of you got to see more of the nominees, let’s hear which of them you think deserves the award. Or any of the other awards. Or, take this cue to swap YouTube links, talk baseball (the Braves’ Grapefruit League season is officially under way!) or hoops, or what have you.

“Or what have you” — except evolution. Y’all have beaten that one to death already. If you insist, keep it on another thread.

I’m more looking forward to the host of the show. If I’m not mistaken, set mcFarland is hosting it this year.

Lincoln will probably win.

However, in the movie, the Conn. senators are seen voting against the Emancapation Proclamation.

Current Conn. politicians are bent out of shape over this and have complained to Speilberg.

I guess they are afraid the Conn. NAACP will start some kind of boycott.

Unless they want to consider Gone With The Wind again , I think I will pass.

Yeah, the BRAVES. They say that Freddie Freeman has lost a few pounts. Methinks the clubhouse IS going to be a bit quiet this year. No news yet about who ties their shoe strings with their left hand. instead of their right. The excitement gtows!

Dusty,

Can you explain your fascination with Anna Karenina? I read it years ago, but when I tried to read it again, I could not quite develop an interest in that self-indulgent society with their soap-opera problems. War and Peace is tiring, but at least there is an interesting historical background.

Getalife continues to ignore the fact that Britain’s own government insists their efforts at INSTITUTING austerity have come up short.

Maybe it’s just his lack of comprehension.

Or that he’s thick headed.

Lord only knows.

More like propagandizing the masses…..he seems to play that game well. Say it enough it many will think it’s true…..merely human nature for those that will not ask questions and do the research themselves……

Speaking of one note wonders – I saw a youtube video of you speaking to the county commissioners as a private citizen and you were standing behind a podium. Is there a hole in the floor behind that podium? I could barely see the top of your head over that podium.

If you noticed, Kamchak, (and of course you didn’t – which is par for the course with you) the camera is mounted on the ceiling and points downward at all speakers, making them seem shorter than they are.

But the more important point is why do you make fun of people you feel are height challenged? (Btw, I’m a pretty average 5′10″.)

Well, hi MarkV

You ask about my interest in Anna Karenina ( never spell it right). I picked up
Tolstoy the other day and read it all over again. Then I saw a few shots from the movie and I wondered how closely they followed Tolstoy. In the end of the book, she runs off with her lover. The few scenes I saw in the preview showed her looking sadly at an oncoming train. Ahhh but????? Was that the end? Did she jump on the tracks?

Another thing I enjoy is all the wonderful costumes they show in that era. Movies of historical times in old Russia usually show some lavish clothing.. Just fun to watch. No wish for anything close to that kind of life.

Present day soap operas? Never, ever!! History? Not much. Read a little something about Pericles that was good. And a survivor book on the Holocaust….terrible history! I don’t get interested too often in the historical. . What are you currently reading?

I guess if you like the Oscars, it is a good thing the preening and fawning is before the sequester kicks in, or according to Barry it would have to be cancelled, for lack of first responders. Not sure when it is, but if it is Sunday night they might get trounced in the ratings by Ax Men.

Didn’t Kyle bring this up a month ago?

“JONATHAN KARL: The spending cuts represent only a fraction of total federal spending. With the cuts, the federal government will spend about $15 billion more this year than it spent last year. Their impact won’t be felt right away. The government must give employees 30 days notice before they can force them to take that one unpaid day off. That means you’re really going to see the impact sometime in April.

BILL PLANTE: People here admit that it could take several months for the public to really feel the pain.

MAJOR GARRETT: Those terrible things, should they occur, won’t happen rapidly. The public could say, maybe the president cried wolf.

I have heard that Killing Lincoln was a good movie but I am sure that I would go and see it and be screaming at the screen in the first 15 minutes when someone says the Civil War was being fought to free the slaves which is total BS.
