This is just Bubba being Bubba, in a way no other politician today can quite manage. From Politico:
Former President Bill Clinton warned a group of top Democratic donors at a private Saturday meeting not to underestimate the passions that gun control stirs among many Americans.
“Do not patronize the passionate supporters of your opponents by looking down your nose at them,” Clinton said.
“A lot of these people live in a world very different from the world lived in by the people proposing these things,” Clinton said. “I know because I come from this world.”
So far, so good. Sound political advice, and seemingly genuine toward both the donors he’s advising and the people he’s advising them not to patronize. Toward the end of the story, however, we get this:
“A lot of these people … all they’ve got is their hunting and their fishing,” [Clinton] told the Democratic financiers. “Or they’re living in a place where they don’t have much police presence. Or they’ve been listening to this stuff for so long that they believe it all.”
“Don’t have much police presence” — OK, fair enough. That can be said about a number of rural areas. But “all they’ve got is their hunting and their fishing”? That’s not as bad as then-candidate Barack Obama’s bitter-clingers remark (also to Democratic donors) about religious and/or gun-totin’ folk. But it is, in my experience growing up in North Georgia around a lot of people who liked to hunt, an overwrought generalization at best and a bad caricature at worst.
Yet the real kicker here is the part about how they’ve “been listening to this stuff for so long that they believe it all.” Which is, of course, completely different from, say, wealthy coast-dwelling Democrats who have never held a rifle but have heard (on NPR) all about how anything newer than a musket can only be used to murder dozens of people at a time.
Yes, that’s another overwrought generalization. The point is that so many liberals love to be told they’re the only right-thinking people who consider all sides and then come to the only rational conclusion — which happens to be a liberal one, time and again — and no one is better than Clinton at making them believe that’s all true.
Which is, I have to admit, a gift. A rather patronizing gift, but a gift nonetheless.

Hillbilly, I wish you had this one (all 618 pages) just to see if you liked it. He treated Washington as steady and , in some ways, most fortunate. It is almost impossible to see how the Revolution was won for us.
There is also an Afterword to the book. It gives a brief biography of almost every character mentioned. That WAS interesting.
I think YOU and the” Other One” are Major Historians as far as I am concerned. .

td @ 1:03 pm: “My point is that there is not currently any Federal definition of an “Assault Weapon”.”
So what? My point was that “a ban on assault weapons might prevent a similar mass shooting.” Since there used to be a ban on assault weapons, in which the weapon in question was banned, and my point was about a possibility that a ban might prevent a mass shooting, the current existence or nonexistence of the law is completely immaterial.

National unemployment stands at 7.8% today the same rate as when Obama took office. However, if there was the same number of people active in the job market now as there was when Obama took office the unemployment rate today would be much higher. It would probably be around 10%.

You’d think that a total ban on guns has been proposed! Actually, what’s proposed and reasonable is a ban on the trade in assault weapons, a ban on the trade in armor-piecing ammunition suitable for use against policemen and members of the National Guard.
Restrictions on weapons for hunting and personal protection would not be banned, but background checks of buyers of weapons would be required.
Even the yokels Clinton refers to should be able to recognize that the proposals are appropriate and overdue.

MarkV,
What about the Remington 742 Woodsmaster now replaced by the 7400. There over a million of them out there they’re chambered for a variety of center fire calibers including .30-06 Springfield. The .30-06 is a lot more powerful than the .223 or the 5.56×45 round fired in so called AR-15 assault rifles, that the Obama administration want to ban. The 742 or 7400 along with similar rifles from other manufactures aren’t tagged for gun control banning legislation. The 742 is a semi-automatic rifle with a magazine that holds 4 rounds with one in the chamber. A shooter with multiple magazines each loaded to capacity could inflict considerable lethality should a shooter be a deranged individual intent on committing mass murder.

Kyle, you make a lot of sense with your ideas on handling the private sale loophole. That is one LEGAL way that felons and the mentally unstable can come into possession of weapons.
I don’t want to take away people’s weapons, but I think there ought to be a sliding scale of background checks and registration. Right now, you can own a machine gun IF you get a federal license. No license should be necessary (IMHO) for a .22 rifle or a shotgun or even a revolver. But for semi-automatic pistol or an “assault” weapon, there should be more licensing and registration requirements.
I also agree that we need to do a LOT more in enforcing the existing gun laws. A convicted felon discovered with a gun in his/her possession should be an automatic 20-year prison sentence, with NO PAROLE. Commission of a crime involving a gun should add 20 years to the sentence – again, no parole. People who fail to properly secure their guns should also share responsibility (see newest headlines about a mother that allowed her 14-year old to shoot his 15-year old brother. Training in gun safety (NEVER point ANY gun, loaded or unloaded, at another person unless you intend to kill them) would help with those SUPPOSED to be handling guns.
And give murderers the death penalty and ensure it is carried out within 2 years of the crime.

What is your point, for crying out loud? Is this the place to discuss the features of all kinds of guns? I mentioned the AR 15 only because it was the gun found in the school in Newtown. If there is a bill in the Congress to ban certain kinds of guns for private use, there will be professionals, who will write the scope. What we can discuss is whether it is sensible to make guns with the most lethal power available to people other than military of police, so that a deranged person can easily get hold of one and engage in mass killing. We have restriction against ownership of other military equipment.

“They say now that there were actually four handguns inside the school, not just two as we were initially told. Four handguns and apparently only handguns that were taken into the school.
We knew that Adam Lanza, the man said to be the gunman here, also had an ‘assault-style’ AR-15 -style rifle that he had had taken to the school, it was in the car he drove there, his mother’s car, but we have been told by several officials that he had left that in the car.”

Don’t be bringing my 742 into the discussion, now Mark has it on his list of “guns with the most lethal power”. I bought in 1973 and killed a few deer with it, use it every season, some like this one, I never get to pull the trigger, just tote it back and forth to the stand. As far as I know it has never snuck out at night and harmed anyone, I know that I have never pointed it at another human or anything else except a target or a deer. If they come and get it they are going to have trouble. Hard to take down a deer with something that do not have lethal power.

WASHINGTON (CBS DC) – Fewer than four-in-10 Americans (39 percent) rate the US in a positive manner – the most negative feedback the country has produced since 1979.

One problem with the private sale restrictions in Georgia anyway, is that Gov has no idea of who owns most guns. There is no registration in Georgia. I have several that were inherited, now there is a sticky wicket. You inherit grandpa’s old pump shotgun that he purchased in 1930, but you are legally restricted from owning a gun, because of some poor decision you made. There is no record of the guns existence, so what do most people do?
If you sell a gun you bought from a friend, who said he bought it from someone he knew, are you going to not sell it to your brother, when no one knew you had it, to begin with. Like most regulations that are crafted with the sole purpose of just pretending to try to do something, these will be very difficult, if not impossible, to enforce.

JamVet: Here is what I’ve said about using the word “liar”:
“If two people are having an exchange and one accuses the other one of lying, that relates directly to the debate. The accused is of course free to demonstrate why the comment in question was not a lie. While I think it preferable to say the comment was a lie, or to say the person was lying, I am not inclined to treat ‘you’re a liar’ differently.”
And then, when you objected that this was putting the burden of proof on the accused:
“I don’t consider it putting the onus on the accused. If the accuser says nothing more than ‘you’re a liar,’ I don’t expect too many people to be persuaded.”
In other words, I don’t consider “liar” to be any different, from a punitive standpoint, from other labels. It’s a poor argument, and I’m inclined to let the comment stand so that, if the accuser can’t back his claim or the accused can rebut it, everyone knows it was a poor argument. I would prefer that people not use it, but it doesn’t rise to the level of being banned.
